John: What happened with the armored van? And the driver? Ok, keep me posted. You know, Natalie, I really thought you were too smart to get involved with something like this, but obviously I was wrong.

Natalie: Something like what, John? You want to ask me something; ask me straight out.

John: You want it straight? I think you and the two idiots were planning on hitting that van, robbing $1 million worth of art, and selling it on the black market. There it is straight.

Antonio: You wanted me killed in Puerto Rico. You did it in front of my mother. I have other witnesses that saw you take a shot at me in Angel Square. You put an innocent woman in the hospital. She dies, you go down for Murder One.

Officer: Yeah, no problem. Consider it done.

Antonio: You tried to kill me twice. Now, who wants me dead and why?

Daniel: Detective!

Antonio: Who's your boss, huh?

Man: Ah!

Daniel: Detective Vega!

Antonio: Are you working for El Tiburon, damn it?

Daniel: Detective Vega!

Antonio: Are you working for el Tiburon? Tell me!

Daniel: That's enough, Detective Vega!

Tico: I'll take care of you. I promise. You have to get through this, Angelina. How did this happen?

Sonia: I think you know how this happened. You caused it.

Mr. Emerson: Mrs. Buchanan, you aren't denying that you're seeing a psychiatrist?

Kelly: No, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Mr. Emerson: And I certainly hope you won't deny that your mother is in a mental institution --

Kelly: No, but --

Mr. Emerson: And has been for most of her adult life?

Evangeline: Objection. Relevance?

Judge: Mr. Emerson, you are way out of line. Please limit your questions to the matter under dispute.

Mr. Emerson: What is your psychiatrist's name, Mrs. Buchanan?

Kelly: Um -- Marie --

Mr. Emerson: Her name is Dr. Marie?

Evangeline: Your honor, we will be glad to stipulate that Dr. Marie Quintana has seen Mrs. Buchanan, although that was supposed to be protected by privacy laws.

Judge: Agreed. Mr. Emerson, you are this close to a night in jail while I decide how much your fine will be for contempt.

Mr. Emerson: My apologies, your honor. Mrs. Buchanan, we've established that you take tranquilizers to calm your nerves, have we not?

Kelly: Well, I have a prescription, but I --

Mr. Emerson: Isn't it true that you spend your days in a drugged state, unable to care for a child? What if your child needs you? What if little Ace falls or chokes or --

Evangeline: Objection. Calls for supposition.

Judge: Sustained. Mr. Emerson, stick to the facts. Last warning.

Mr. Emerson: Mrs. Buchanan, would you hire a mentally incapacitated drug user to take care of your son?

Kelly: No, of course not! But my God --

Evangeline: Your honor, this is outrageous!

Mr. Emerson: Withdrawn. No further questions.

Antonio: Officer? Take this piece of scum and lock him in a cell. I'll deal with him later.

Daniel: You'll "deal with him"? Look, I'm warning you, detective, either you pull yourself together or that piece of scum could bring charges against this department and could ruin this whole case!

Antonio: He tried to kill me twice. There's an innocent woman who's fighting for her life in a hospital right now!

Daniel: Look, we have enough of a case against him for attempted murder. You don't have to go running off halfcocked!

Antonio: I could've broken him!

Daniel: I don't care!

Antonio: I could've found out who El Tiburon is!

Daniel: I don't care! It's my job to protect our case!

Antonio: He's a killer working for El Tiburon! What the hell's the matter with you?

Daniel: That's my question for you. Do you want to get kicked off this force again?

Antonio: Then do it. Go ahead. You think that's going to stop me? I'm going to find El Tiburon before he hurts anyone else in my family again.

Tico: How could you think me capable of hurting Angelina?

Sonia: Whoever did this was gunning for Antonio.

Tico: You think I sent someone to shoot Antonio?

Sonia: Did you?

Tico: I had nothing to do with it. Look, I'll admit Antonio is problematic, but he's family.

Sonia: What do you think actually happened to that $100 million? Do you think Antonio’s lying and the guys that were after him didn't run off with it; he'd actually already had it stashed somewhere?

Tico: Anything is possible. I mean, how could we have known about the palm print business? I mean, using Antonio, of all people.

Sonia: Yeah. And who could have it? I mean, it certainly isn't Carlotta Vega.

Tico: Well, my guess is that it's now in the hands of El Tiburon.

Sonia: Yeah, whoever that is.

Evangeline: Sidebar, your honor.

Dorian: Kevin deserves to rot in hell for what he's doing to Kelly.

David: I know.

Dorian: How many women's lives does he have to ruin? What are you looking for?

David: The magic bullet, but it's late.

Dorian: David, did you find something that'll help Kelly?

David: I sure thought so, but I'm beginning to think that I was taken for a ride.

Evangeline: I ask that you censure Mr. Emerson for his behavior here this morning.

Mr. Emerson: On what grounds?

Evangeline: Bullying my client, manipulating her testimony, not to mention ignoring most of your warnings.

Mr. Emerson: You're just not used to losing.

Judge: Mr. Emerson, I despise courtroom theatrics. I suggest you save them for your next jury trial. You are scoring zero points with me. Back to your corners. Ms. Williamson, your witness.

Evangeline: Thank you, your honor. Mrs. Buchanan -- um, your honor, I have no further questions for this witness at present, but I reserve the right to recall her.

Judge: You may step down.

Judge: Next witness?

Evangeline: Your honor, I would like to call Duke Buchanan to the stand.

Mr. Emerson: There aren't going to be any surprises, are there?

Bailiff: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?

Duke: I do.

Evangeline Kevin Buchanan is your father. Is that correct?

Duke: Yes, ma'am.

Evangeline: Would you say he's been a good father? Would you say that Kevin has been a good father to you?

Duke: Well, my parents have been divorced since I was really young.

Evangeline: I understand that. But I'm asking about your relationship with your father.

Duke: He's my dad.

Evangeline: When you were growing up, did you live with your father?

Duke: No, ma'am, with my mother.

Evangeline: Well, did you see him often? On weekends or school vacations?

Duke: No, my mom and I moved to Texas when I was a baby.

Evangeline: Well, he could've flown out to see you or had you flown in to see him. Did anything like that ever happen?

Duke: Not often.

Evangeline: Well, then you must have been happy when your father married Kelly Buchanan and moved to Texas.

Mr. Emerson: Objection.

Evangeline: I'll rephrase. When Mr. Buchanan and my client moved to Texas, they lived within 50 miles of you, isn't that correct?

Duke: Yes, ma'am.

Evangeline: So did you see your father more often then?

Duke: Well, I mean, around that time, he was getting involved in politics, so he really didn't have a lot of time for too much else.

Evangeline: Didn't he invite you to social gatherings, holiday celebrations, his speeches, things like that?

Duke: Not really, but my mother --

Evangeline: What about Mrs. Buchanan? Did the two of you develop any kind of relationship?

Duke: I guess I was probably the typical teenager at first, but she was so great, what could I do? She really was terrific. She went to my football games and school plays, and even parent-teacher night, stuff like that. It was fine with my mom.

Evangeline: But like your father, wasn't Mrs. Buchanan very involved in politics, charity work, things like that?

Duke: Oh, yeah. She did a lot of stuff with children's organizations. She was famous for the stuff she did.

Evangeline: And yet somehow, Mrs. Buchanan found time to spend with her stepson, and your father didn’t.

Mr. Emerson: Your honor --

Judge: I get your point, Ms. Williamson. Move on.

Evangeline: Is it safe to say that you like Mrs. Buchanan?

Duke: Oh, yeah. She was really there for me, you know, in times when you can't really talk to your mother, so you just need somebody. I was always grateful to her for that.

Woman: Excuse me. Is this Kevin Buchanan’s custody hearing?

Jessica: Yes.

Dorian: All right, what is going on?

David: The bullet has entered the chamber.

Evangeline: Did you know that she always wanted to have children of her own?

Duke: Everybody did. She talked about it all the time. She's crazy about children.

Evangeline: Do you think that Kelly Buchanan would make a good mother?

Mr. Emerson: Your honor, what young Mr. Buchanan thinks is not relevant.

Evangeline: I'll rephrase. Have you had the opportunity to see Kelly with Ace?

Duke: Yes, ma'am. She absolutely loves that little boy. I mean, anybody could see that he is the most important thing to her in the world.

Mr. Emerson: Your honor --

Evangeline: Nothing further. Thank you, Mr. Buchanan.

Mr. Emerson: Has your father given you any financial support over the years?

Duke: Always, sir. He still does.

Mr. Emerson: Is he happily, willingly paying for your college education?

Duke: Yes, sir.

Mr. Emerson: And asked you to move here to attend a college near him?

Duke: Yes, sir.

Mr. Emerson: No further questions.

Judge: Mr. Buchanan, you may step down. Next witness?

Evangeline: Your honor, I would like to call Paige Nelson to the stand.

Mr. Emerson: Who is that woman?

Kevin: I have no idea.

Bailiff: Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?

Paige: I do.

Evangeline: Could you please state your name for the court?

Paige: I'm Paige Nelson.

Evangeline: Ms. Nelson, what do you do for a living?

Paige: I'm an escort.

Evangeline: You keep men company for money?

Paige: Exactly.

Evangeline: What was the nature of your relationship with Kevin Buchanan?

Paige: Kevin frequently used my services while his wife was pregnant with their son.

Tico: Abre tus ojos. Estamos aqui, Angelina.

Sonia: She'll pull through this. She's a strong woman.

Antonio: How's she doing?

Sonia: She's still unconscious.

Tico: You don't belong here.

Antonio: She took a bullet that was meant for me. She saved my life.

Tico: Yeah, that's right, and now she could die for it.

Antonio: I'm sorry about what happened. You need to know that.

Sonia: I'll just feel a lot better when she can talk to us herself.

Antonio: Yes, me, too. That way I can thank her for what she did and find out why she did it.

Tico: What are you talking about? It was an accident.

Antonio: No. No, she pushed me out of the way and took that bullet for me. She put my life in front of her own. And I think you both know why.

Natalie: You know, John, for the last time, I really don't know anything about any paintings, ok? The car broke down. We had to stop. Paul was just about to fix it when your goon squad showed up and -- I didn't know it was against the law to break down in your own car.

[Car starts]

John: Hmm. Either I have the magic touch or, once again, you're lying.

Natalie: Wow, you fixed it. I mean, the engine must've cooled down since I tried last. Probably flooded it, I'm sure.

[John sighs]

John: This is what you were trying to tell me the other night. Why didn't you?

Natalie: Nothing to tell.

John: Nothing to tell? You said you knew about a crime.

Natalie: That was -- I saw a busboy stick his hand in the till, and the manager took care of it already. It's cool.

John: Natalie, why do you keep doing this? You know, Cramer keeps getting you into it, and I'm not always going to be there to get you out of it.

Natalie: Ok, no one asked you to. Could you please just leave Paul and me alone, ok -- alone?

John: I'm a cop. Paul's a rat and a thief. As much as I'd like to, he's making it kind of hard for me to stay away. And you --

Natalie: No crime was committed here, John!

John: Hey, look, no matter how hard you want to push away the people that really care about you, I don't feel like quitting just yet, no matter how hard you drive me to want to stay away. Look, whether you like it or not, you ain't no tough guy, and deep down you got nothing but good in you.

Natalie: Where did that get me?

John: Where is this getting you?

Sonia: I have no idea why Angelina would put herself in danger for you.

Tico: I do. Angelina's always been the kind of woman whose natural instinct is to put someone else's life before that of her own.

Antonio: Before this happened, Angelina was at the diner talking to my mother. I have no idea what was said, and it was intense, but whatever it was, they wanted no one to hear it.

Tico: Really? Well, if you're that curious, why don't you go ask your mother?

Antonio: I'm asking you. Did Angelina ever mention my mother over the years?

Tico: Antonio, you're beginning to sound like a broken record. For the last time, I did not know of Tia Carlotta until just before I came to Llanview.

Sonia: We never discussed Manny's side of the family. You know that.

Antonio: All right. Let me know when she wakes up.

Sonia: He's got a lot of questions.

Tico: Well, as long as he doesn't get any answers. I need to go speak to her doctor.

Sonia: Sleep, Angelina. I can't have you say anything.

Evangeline: Ms. Nelson, could you describe for the court the work you did for Mr. Buchanan?

Paige: He paid for my favors. He was one of my regulars.

Kevin: That's -- your honor, that's -- I don't even know this woman!

Judge: Mr. Emerson, please control your client!

Dorian: David, that looks like my bracelet.

David: Huh. It does look like your bracelet.

Evangeline: He paid you to sleep with him?

Paige: Well, after a couple months, I couldn't take his money anymore. I was falling for him.

Kevin: Oh, this is ridiculous! Come on!

Judge: Mr. Buchanan, I am warning you.

Paige: That's when it turned into an affair. It was a real relationship. He was in love with me.

Evangeline: Kevin told you he was in love with you?

Paige: Kevin told me that he was going to leave his wife for me. But then she announced her pregnancy on TV. He was so upset. He felt that we had to break it off.

Evangeline: But Kevin didn't leave his wife.

Paige: No.

Kevin: Todd Manning is behind this, I'm telling you.

Paige: He was just using me, you know, getting my services for free. But when I found out that he was sleeping with another woman besides his wife, that's when I realized what a fool I had been.

Evangeline: Nothing further. Your witness.

Mr. Emerson: How did Mr. Buchanan pay you?

Paige: My business is cash only, if you know what I mean.

Mr. Emerson: I see. And where did the two of you normally meet for your transactions?

Paige: His office. One time in his limo, out of town. We met last November in Harrisburg, the eighth, at the Omni.

Kevin: I was there for a meeting with Johnson, but I swear I was alone.

Mr. Emerson: Damn it.

Kelly: How much longer is this going to take?

Evangeline: Stay strong. Things look good, but it's not a done deal yet.

Mr. Emerson: Nothing further, your honor.

Judge: Thank you, Ms. Nelson. You may step down. Are there any further witnesses?

Evangeline: Yes, your honor. I would like to recall Kelly Cramer Buchanan to the stand.

Judge: Fine. We'll take a five-minute recess first.

[Judge pounds gavel]

Dorian: That must have been terrible for poor Kelly to hear.

David: Don't worry, we'll tell her the truth later.

Dorian: Oh!

David: She'll bounce back quick.

Dorian: I knew it! You are the most amazing man.

David: Shh.

Evangeline: David, we need to talk now. Kelly, where you going?

Kelly: Just -- I need to freshen up.

Evangeline: Stay strong, ok? Just think about Ace. You'll be fine.

[Phone rings]

John: Hey.

Evangeline: Hey. How you doing?

John: It's been a tough day. How about you?

Evangeline: Well, it's been a very weird legal experience, but I think I have an excellent shot of winning this case if Kelly can keep it together.

Evangeline's voice: Just think of your baby -- just think of your baby --

Mr. Emerson's voice: Mrs. Buchanan, would you want a mentally incapacitated drug user taking care of your son?

Evangeline's voice: Think of your baby -- your baby -- your baby --

Kelly: I can do this. I can do this. I'll just -- just think of my son.

[Knock on door]

Evangeline: Kelly? Are you in there? The judge is waiting.

Blair: Hey. Hey, hey, hey. Good luck.

Kelly: Thanks. Are you going to stay?

Blair: Of course I am. We Cramers have to stick together, right? It's going to be ok.

Kelly: Thanks.

[Judge pounds gavel]

Judge: Ms. Williamson, your witness.

Evangeline: Yes, your honor.

Kelly: Ok.

Judge: Mrs. Buchanan, may I remind you you are under oath.

Kelly: Could I have a glass of water?

Evangeline: According to your stepson, you are active in several children's charities. Can you elaborate for the court?

Kelly: Yes, I -- I'm on the board of Children's Hospital and the Mercy Hospice, Camp Leap Forward, and Porter Academy for Special Education. I was involved with a lot of outreach programs in Texas, and I've continued that work since I moved to Llanview about a year ago.

Evangeline: So it's safe to say that not only do you love children but you are uniquely qualified to care for them.

Mr. Emerson: Objection.

Judge: I'll allow it. You may answer the question.

Kelly: I had kind of a rotten childhood, so, yeah, I care very deeply for children.

Evangeline: Is it true you had trouble conceiving?

Kelly: Yes. I saw so many fertility specialists. I have a condition known as thrombophilia, and it makes it dangerous for me to get pregnant.

Evangeline: Having a baby was very important to you?

Mr. Emerson: Objection. Leading the witness.

Evangeline: Was having a baby something that was important to you?

Kelly: Yes, so much. I -- I knew I would be a good mother. I knew that I would be able to give a child a safe and happy and loving home, and I just never thought it would happen. I looked into adoption, and then I got pregnant. It was the happiest time in my life.

Tico: Jessica. Hey.

Jessica: Hey, what are you doing here?

Tico: Filing papers on some property I bought.

Jessica: Oh, how's Angelina?

Tico: Oh, she's doing much better, thanks. Thanks for asking. Are you at the Buchanan hearing?

Jessica: Yeah, I am.

Tico: Yeah, I know Dorian was very worried about it. I hope everything's going well.

Jessica: Thank you.

Evangeline: Mrs. Buchanan, are you currently under psychiatric care?

Kelly: Yes, I am. With the trial and with the divorce, I've been under a lot of stress, and I needed some guidance. I didn't want Ace to be affected by what I was going through.

Evangeline: So you want to be as healthy as possible for your baby?

Kelly: Absolutely.

Evangeline: Can you tell me about the pills Mr. Emerson referred to?

Kelly: I have a prescription for diazepam.

Evangeline: Mm-hmm.

Kelly: It's a mild tranquilizer, and I take it sometimes to help me relax so I can go to sleep, but I only take it when my Aunt Dorian or the nanny can look after Ace.

Evangeline: Can you explain how you went through four bottles in the last two months?

Kelly: Well, one bottle I spilled. David Vickers, my aunt's fiancé, was there, and we threw those pills away.

David: That statement is true, your honor.

Mr. Emerson: Your honor, this man is out of order.

Judge: I don't need you to tell me my business, Mr. Emerson. Thank you. Sit down.

David: My pleasure.

Evangeline: That leaves three refills.

Kelly: I lost a bottle and I finished a bottle, and I'm partly through my current one.

Evangeline: Are you working?

Kelly: Well, other than my charity work and the work on my various boards, no, no. I want to care for my son. He is my top priority. I do not want my son to be raised by a bunch of nannies. Really, everything in my life now pretty much revolves around him.

Evangeline: Nothing further. Your honor, I rest my case.

Judge: Mr. Emerson?

Mr. Emerson: No questions.

Judge: All right, then. You may step down, Mrs. Buchanan. We'll take a brief recess while I review the testimony, and I'll have a ruling for you shortly.

[Judge pounds gavel]

Blair: Good job, Kelly.

Kelly: I'm ok.

Blair: Good job, good job.

Kelly: Thank you.

Blair: Way to go.

Jessica: Haven't you heard from Antonio at all?

Tico: Well, the last time I saw him was at the hospital, but that was hours ago. I mean, I thought he would've been here by now to be with you.

Jessica: Yeah, I would've -- I would've thought so, too.

Antonio's voice: This new guy, El Tiburon? He must feel pretty lucky having you taking out Padilla for him.

Sonia: You think I did this to help El Tiburon? I've been in this too long to throw in the towel now.

Man's voice: They walked away with $100 million of Santi money.

Sonia's voice: Antonio Vega was the key to everything. Sleep, Angelina. I can't have you say anything.

Antonio: Sonia is el Tiburon.

Sonia: Ok, Tico, let's see what you've got.

Natalie: Can I go home now?

John: Natalie, you have any idea how much those paintings are worth? Plotting to steal them is conspiracy to commit grand theft. That's jail time, even if you were just the decoy.

Natalie: I didn't do anything wrong.

John: Look, I know you didn't plan the robbery, so why don't you just come clean and tell me who did.

Natalie: Are you asking m to rat out my brother and my boyfriend?  You don't know anything more about this than I do. You're just trying to scare me. So if you don't have any charges to press against me, I'd really like to go home.

John: You could've been killed. Did you ever think about that?

Natalie: Ok, yeah, I could have been killed in some theoretical heist that I was theoretically involved in.

John: The gun wasn't theoretical, Natalie. What, are you trying to change this clown? You think you can save Cramer?

Natalie: No. That's your M.O., not mine.

John: Look, I know what you're doing, all right? It's the code -- don't rat on people you love. And you love Cramer, right? And Cramer loves you. But does he follow the same code?

Natalie: What does that mean?

John: He's done it before. How long do you think it will take Paul to tell those cops you were involved in this right up to your neck?

 [Doorbell rings]

Sonia: Antonio.

Antonio: I saw you at the construction site. You were talking about the $100 million, then you mentioned my name. John finds you at my apartment snooping around. Shut up! No more lies. You said you know nothing about the Santi organization -- no family secrets, nothing about anything -- but ever since you came into my life, I've nearly died three times.

Sonia: I don't know what I'm supposed to say. I --

Antonio: The truth. I want the truth, and I'm not leaving until I get it.

Jessica: Antonio's not answering his phone.

Tico: Hmm. Maybe he got caught up in something.

Jessica: Hey, from what I saw, you were great up there.

Duke: It was pretty rough.

Jessica: It's almost over.

Duke: Hey, I asked Adriana to go to that charity thing with me?

Tico: Mm-hmm?

Duke: She turned me down flat.

Tico: She did? I'm sorry to hear about that.

[Phone rings]

Tico: Oh, excuse me. Hello?

Officer: Yeah, this is Braxton. It's done. You got what you paid for.

Tico: I have some business to take care of. I hope everything works out for the best.

Kelly: Well, I'm glad Blair could stay through my testimony.

Dorian: She had to go pick up Starr, but she was very confident that you're going to win.

Kelly: Where's Ace?

Dorian: He's with the nanny. She's bringing him over here now.

David: Yeah, to celebrate your victory.

Evangeline: Hey, Kelly, we have to sit down now, ok?

Kelly: Ok.

Dorian: Thank you. Thank you so much for Paige Nelson.

David: Ah.

Dorian: Oh. She really turned the tide in Kelly’s favor.

David: Now, that was worth a measly, old bracelet, don't you think?

Dorian: Hmm. My bracelet for her testimony? No problem. But that better be all you gave her.

Bailiff: All rise.

[Judge pounds gavel]

Judge: Be seated. .

Natalie: Where are Paul and Rex?

John: Paul and Rex are going to spend the night in a holding cell.

Natalie: Based on what? What charges?

John: D.A.'s got a lot to choose from.

Natalie: And what about me?

John: You can go. Hey. I meant what I said in the car earlier. Think about it.

[Phone rings]

John: Yeah, McBain. Slow down. Tell me exactly how he escaped.

Man: Thank you for getting me out of that dump of a jail.

Tico: Shut up.

Man: What?

Tico: How could you let Angelina get in the way of that bullet?

Angelina: Antonio. Oy. Dios mio. Antonio. Is Antonio all right?

Antonio: Now, we could do this here or you could come down to the station, but either way, you're going to talk.

Sonia: Antonio, the men I was talking to were suppliers for Caliente.

Antonio: You were at a construction site in the middle of the night.

Sonia: Well, you know how it is with contractors. They're not always completely legal. The money we were talking about was for renovations --

Antonio: I know what I heard, Sonia. You mentioned my name.

Sonia: Well, because having a cop in my pocket just shows I mean business. Besides, I always talk about you. You know how I feel about you. How can you have such good feelings about me and such bad feelings at the same time?

Antonio: I'm serious.

Sonia: So am I.

Judge: In the matter of custody of the minor child Asa Buchanan II, I have reached a decision. This is not a simple case. But in essence, it boils down to one simple, overriding question -- shall the child live with Kevin Buchanan or shall the child live with Kelly Buchanan?

>> Stay tuned for scenes from the next "One Life to Live."

>> On the next "One Life to Live" --

Judge: Which parent can provide the most loving environment for this young child?

Antonio: Either you're really, really close to El Tiburon or you are El Tiburon. Which is it?

Tico: He keeps getting in the way. Next time, he's not going to be that lucky.
