(This still needs extensive editing)

Carly: Hi. Is, uh, joss home? No. She's at oscar's meadow. Yeah? 'Cause, I, uh -- I have a surprise for her. I can see that. And I'm sure you have an excellent explanation. So start talking. We need someone super high-profile. Giselle? She's in bali doing a shoot. What about scarlett? She's in production. I know. Uh, that senator. The one from the midwest -- no politics. Okay... so maybe a new face. An exclusive on someone that crimson discovers. You know what? That's a risk. It's a risk I don't think we can afford to take. Stop. There's only one obvious choice for the cover of crimson. Ava jerome. Can I join you? Yeah. What if I had said "no"? I'd ignore it. I come bearing good news. Ryan's dead. Close. He's in a coma. Hey. Hey. What did the neurologist say? That the coma was an "unintended consequence" of the surgery. Well, if he doesn't wake up, at least he did something decent on the way out. He'll wake up. You sound confident about that. Well, if history has taught me anything, it's that my brother is hard to kill.

[ Monitor beeping ] Doc finn. Please, please tell me you got good news about my wife.

Thank you. I know people say it all the time, but I think it might be true -- the universe does have a way of working things out. And this one took a while, ava, but the worst is over. Oh, I'm not so sure about that. Come on. Something really good came out of something really rotten. And ryan is sitting in a hospital bed right now. He's in a coma. He's down a kidney. And when he wakes up, he's going to pentonville. And that is a fate worse than death. I just can't get him out of my head, though. Forget that guy. It's like he's -- he's -- he's taunting me. Ava, the worst thing you can do to a guy like ryan chamberlain is to forget him. So forget him. Let him wither into oblivion. That guy thought he was so smart, always eight steps ahead of everybody. He was wrong. And he lost, and we won. And moving on without looking back? That's the best way to prove it. I just checked with the surgical team, and everything's going well. Stella: Oh, thank god. And how is she handling the antibiotics? I'm monitoring that closely, and everything there's great, too. This is all good news, okay?

[ Sighs ] Wh-what's that? Um, jordan requested a dnr. W-why? I mean, I know what they're for, but...I thought this surgery was routine. It is. As scary as it sounds, a dnr is routine. When you undergo anesthesia like this, as a matter of practice, the hospital gives you the option. Yeah. Most of the time, everything is fine. Stella: But there's always an off-chance, and -- and jordan just wanted to be safe. It's not an order to not save her, uncle curtis. Curtis, we're all here to pull her through. It's just saying if she happened to end up in a vegetative state, which she won't, not to leave her there. Which we wouldn'T. Hey. Thanks for telling me the truth.

[ Quietly ] Are you disappointed? No.

[ Quietly ] I mean, I'm not sure that it's something that I would have chosen, but I see why you did, and you saved someone's life. I have a hard time seeing fault in that. Thank you. I love you. I love you, too. So tell me -- how do you feel?

[ Clears throat ] To be completely honest? Mm-hmm. I feel fine. Really? Yeah. I thought I might feel some guilt, maybe even a lot. But the truth is, my brother never would have given up a kidney voluntarily. No. Jordan's alive. And she'll be with us for a long time. And like you say -- that's something that's hard to find fault with. For me. But I'm not as close to it as you are. I didn't bow down to the tyranny of ryan. To the illusion that I could save him somehow. And it's an illusion that -- that really stems from our childhood. Yeah, because you're the kid who got away. It's survivor's guilt, kevin. Yes, and I finally, finally realized that I had no control in the situation. I had no power over who got hurt and who didn'T. And this experience has finally,

finally let me... acknowledge that -- that I simply had no control. I had no more control than he had. I had no choice in the matter, and the only choice that I have is as an adult. And as an adult, I choose to stop enabling my brother. 'Cause in the end, that's all I was really doing. Yeah. This is probably the last thing that joss wants to do right now. Mm. Pretty much. She'd only do it because I'm asking her. But I think it'll be great, you know, to get out there and catch a wave. It's fun. It'll connect her to nature. It'll be good for her. I just don't want to push her, you know? Oh, believe me, I-I know that she needs time to herself, you know, to cry and -- and just process everything. But she also needs to live in the moment, you know? She needs to know that, uh, no matter what happens, that life is still beautiful. And I think this will really help her. Surfing. Yes, surfing. If you say so. Oh, please. "Oh, please" what?

[ Chuckles ] You're only resistant because you never wanted to learn to surf. What are you talking about? I am a florida girl. Probably the worst argument, because the best surfer in the world comes from florida. No, that's not what I mean, okay? Wh-- you're making it sound like I'm someone who doesn't like the beach. That -- it couldn't be further from the truth. I love the water. I love the sand. I love the waves. I love everything about it. I just have no desire to surf because my body is my board. You did not just say that. Yep, I just said that. Why can't you just admit it?

[ Scoffs ] What? Huh? Admit what? That you didn't want to be bad at something. That's why you never tried. Okay, I'm not gonna confirm or deny that the reason why I never learned to surf was because I didn't want to look like an idiot falling off the board. Okay. I am, however, very happy that josslyn learned to surf before she even knew what she was doing. I love that. Isn't that the greatest? I mean, our little girl, she can't even remember a time when she didn't surf. Thanks to you. Hey.

[ Sighs ] You okay?

[ Voice breaking ] I'm so scared for her. She's so young. And this is so huge, jax, you know? She's gonna be okay, right? She's gonna be okay? Yes. Yes, yes. With the two of us to hold her up, she will be more than okay.

[ Sighs ]

Ok I'll admit. I didn't keep my place as clean as I would like 'cuz I'm way too busy. Who's got the time to chase around down dirt, dust and hair? So now, I use heavy duty swiffer sweeper and dusters. For hard-to-reach places, duster makes it easy to clean. It captures dust in one swipe. Ha! Gotcha! And sweeper heavy duty cloths lock away twice as much dirt and dust. It gets stuff deep in the grooves other tools can miss. Y'know what? My place... is a lot cleaner now. Stop cleaning. Start swiffering.

They say we're too grown for fun we say playful's never done

don't fight the feeling just let it flow

stack it up, rack it up, let it go

I got a secret the world should know

let's stay playful, oreo finding the right drop for dry eyes... can be overwhelming. For relief that lasts... you want soothe xp from bausch + lomb. Soothe xp helps restore the eyes' lipid layer... ...seal in moisture... ...and protect against further irritation. Soothe xp. The right choice for dry eyes. Here you go. Thanks. So, what do you think? Should we just wait here or track her down or just... ooh. I-I don't want it to seem like... oh, but you just -- you don't want her, you know, to be gone too long, you know? I mean, I -- that's -- i struggle with that all the time. Yeah, and what side do you usually lean towards? You know what you should do? You should take her, um, surfboard and put it in her room. That's what you should do. And then let josslyn find it. Just let her feel however she wants to feel about it? Well, yeah, but then on saturday, you call her and say, "hey, let's go surfing." Perfect. Yep. Sounds like a plan. Great.

[ Cellphone chimes ] Wow! Whoa. That was quick. The revised budget for crimson is in. What? Oh, yeah. Remember when I told you I wanted to find something to keep me busy while I'm in town? Uh-huh. Yeah, that's it. So, that something is crimson? Yes. I, uh -- I bought half of aurora media, the, uh, print division. Oh. Well, that's awesome. Really? Mm-hmm! Because you sound a little thrown. No. I think it's great. I do. I think it's a perfect fit, a-and it'll be great to have you in the metro court offices. It will. But...? Does drew know much about you? It sounds like you're implying that I'm hard to work with. No, I -- I wasn't saying that. I -- no. Right. Well, I guess you do have a point, because I do like things to go my -- my way. True. Actually, a bit of a control freak when it comes to my businesses, yes. Very true, yeah. But you know what? Drew and I have an agreement that, even though, uh, crimson will stay under the umbrella of aurora, the two divisions will be completely separate, so he doesn't get a say in what I do, and I don't get a say in what he does. What? Neighbors, not collaborators. Yes, exactly. Mm, alright. Well, in that case, I only have one thing to say -- congratulations! Thank you!

[ Laughs ]

[ Sighs ] Are you out of your cartullo-loving mind? That is honestly the only explanation. Okay, I knew this was gonna be a hard sell. Uh, how about a no sell? Never. Full stop. Uh, never say never. Right, nina? Sasha's living proof of that. I'm also living proof that ava jerome is a complete psychopath. Ooh, good. I like this. Let's get it all out. Ava is horrible. Tell us why. Right now? I mean, there's no time like the present. Okay, um, so, this woman comes out of nowhere, chats me up, makes it really clear that kiki and griffin aren't serious. "It's completely casual," she says. "Friends with benefits," she says. "Kiki's not even that into him," she says. So, of course, I flirt with the guy. Yeah, I mean, griffin's hot. Yeah? He is. And that offends kiki, as it should. Considering they're not only dating -- they're exclusive. So, she kicks me out, and I get it. Turns out that ava is a complete whackjob who set me up. No fun, but I'm prepared to get on with my life. I start by ordering some room service at the metro court. Next thing I know, I wind up drugged, without my clothes, in bed next to griffin. Well, that sounds like magazine-cover material to me. The only reason I did not press charges is because it was kiki's mom, and kiki and griffin wanted to handle it on their own. Drugs -- ooh. Manipulation. All-around heinousness -- check. Okay, nina. It's your turn. Let 'er rip. So, now is the time, is it? For me to pick myself up, dust myself off, start the next chapter of my life. Yep. A million yeps. How? I'm a huge joke. I slept with my daughter's murderer. Come on. It's not that easy to move on from something like that. Ava, you want to know who the poster boy is for second chances? You're looking at him. And what do you think I have to thank for that? A brain tumor?

[ Chuckles ] I'm sorry. No, no, no. No, not at all. It's not what I thought you were gonna say, but... come on. In -- in -- in this culture that we live in, the news cycle is, what, like three days? If it's really big news, a week, and then people just love to move on to the next wave of hysteria. And ryan chamberlain has had his 15 minutes. They're done. But I'm afraid that mine have just started. Okay, sure. Look, there are always gonna be people in this world who look at people like you and me sideways, but you can have a great life, ava. I'm telling you -- a great life. And that is the best revenge. Sounds like you've had a real breakthrough. I think that's fantastic. But I still have a lot of work to do. You're right. And I will. I think it'll be a lot easier once they move ryan to pentonville. You do? I'm not gonna visit him. I'm gonna cut off all contact with him. I am truly, finally going to let him go. I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that, because I know that that's not gonna be easy, kevin. Whatever the horrible circumstances that led ryan to this -- and they were horrible -- he chose it. He embraced it. And these are the consequences of his actions. But at least his life won't be a total loss. He saved jordan. That counts for something. Jordan just wanted to cover every possible eventuality. But like elizabeth said, the chances are better than excellent that a dnr will not be needed. But just in case, these are jordan's wishes. She told me I needed to make that clear. But I'm telling you -- this is not something you need to worry about. I just don't get it, auntie. I mean, this is a straightforward surgery. It seems way unnecessary. It feels endless, right? Yeah. I mean, first the car accident. Mom wakes up from that, and we think she's in the clear, but, no, the bottom falls out again with her kidneys. And now it feels like -- it feels like we've almost made it, and, all of a sudden, there's something new. But, uncle, I have come far enough in my medical career to know that when they say this is standard procedure, it really is. Now, I also know that there are no guarantees, but the odds -- they -- they are hugely in mom's favor, and that is not something we could have said before. We can now, and you know what?

[ Sighs ] What? If a minute of worry was taken away by signing that dnr, by talking with aunt stella, that's a good thing. Actually, that is what we want. We want any worries taken off of mom's mind so that she can focus on fighting and staying strong. T.J., Not that I had any doubts... you're gonna make one hell of a doctor. I mean, I don't like to assume, but... smiles are good, right? Surgery was a success. Jordan's being moved to recovery right now.

[ Sighs ]

[ Laughs ] Oh, gosh.

Surfboard is literally on top of her bed so she can't miss it. Oh, great. Um, I wanted to ask you. Is josslyn aware that your plans to stay in town are official? No, I haven't told her yet. I was -- I was gonna tell her this weekend when we're together. She's gonna be really happy, you know? I mean, I was very happy that you're staying, you know? Okay, is there something else you want to s-- it's just -- it's one thing for you and sonny to be in the same town for an extended period of time... oh, right. ...While your daughter is grieving her boyfriend. It's another for you to stay here permanently because you do know that you and sonny are gonna be spending a lot of time together. You're gonna be seeing each other. Yeah, I can't wait. I'm hoping that this spirit of mutual cooperation continues. Okay? That's all. That's all I'm going to say. There is -- my plea for peace is over. There it is, okay? Okay. While I don't believe that sonny deserves any of the good things that are in his life -- okay, that's not helping -- no, no, no, I'm just sa-- it's not me to take that away from him, okay? So if you want us to coexist, we will coexist. Thank you. Um, when joss finds her surfboard, will you have her call me? I will. Okay. Okay. Thanks. I'm not doing this. Uh [Chuckles] Come on. It'll be cathartic, I promise. Really? 'Cause ava's not going on the cover of crimson. Nina, just humor me.

[ Sighs ] This is a waste of time, but I'll humor you. Okay, I got married very, very young -- I wasn't even 20 -- to silas clay, your father, and my mother hired ava to seduce silas. They ended up having an affair, and, later on, when I had a psychotic break and I gave ava a drug to induce her labor, and then I stole her baby. It's something, you know, I'm not really proud of, but...

[ Clears throat ] Anyway, in all fairness, I learned. I learned that you have to hit rock bottom in order to rebuild yourself.

[ Sighs ] Do you regret what you did? To ava? I regret my actions, but it's not like feeling bad for her. Come on, maxie. Ava is a grasping, poisonous bitch. Why on earth should we put her on the cover of crimson? Because she's a grasping, poisonous bitch, and that's what sells. When was the last time you saw avery? Not recently enough. Doesn't need to be that way. You make that sound pretty easy. I-I don't know if it's easy. Look, I don't know if it's easy or not, but I know that you are capable of anything. What's going on with that gallery of yours? What about it? Well, you got any plans for the next exhibit? The doors have been locked for weeks. No? That's a no? That's a definite no. Okay. Have you heard from any artists? A few. Okay, great. You need to call them back. You need to get the next young whippersnapper visionary up on your walls. Well, to be honest, you know, I've also heard from a few collectors, too. Yeah? I am not surprised, not at all. You know who the go-to is for good art? Ava jerome. You have a reputation to uphold. You need to uphold it. Why are you doing this? Why do you care? I think you know why.

[ Sighs ] Ryan chamberlain has taken enough from you. Don't let him take anything else.

[ Smooches ] I know you said that you were gonna let this go, put it behind you, and I believe you. It's just that I can still see this sort of flicker of conflict when you look at ryan. You know, it's kind of like a lingering "what if"... I'm working on it. I know, and you'll defeat it. I know you will. Maybe this can help. I know that what happened to ryan was unconscionable. It was tragic. But it's happened to a lot of other children, too. And those kids didn't grow up to be serial killers. I know. Yeah. Look around you. There's a lot of people who have suffered trauma, yet they go on with their life, and they have full lives, productive lives. You know, maybe even raise a family of their own.

[ Inhales deeply ] It happens. I think it happens a lot. I think the abuse maybe can explain why somebody becomes twisted. It doesn't excuse it. Not for anybody. Not for ryan.

[ Monitor beeping ] Jordan, you did great. So now let's make sure we get your pain under control. Molly sends her love to everyone. Oh. And we send it right back. Doc? Yeah? Wh-wh-when can I see her? Nurse webber's just making sure that jordan's comfortable. The second she comes out, you go right in. Yeah.

[ Sighs ] Come on. -Please do your hands. -Oh, my gosh. -Okay. -Thank you.

[ Monitor beeping ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Sighs ] Welcome back, baby.

[ Chuckles ]

Guys. New people are not going to subscribe to one cover with ava jerome's face on it. Whether or not it increases subscriptions -- which, if we do this right, it just might...

[ Cellphone chimes ] ...It will definitely push up our ad revenues. I mean, we could charge double for the ad space.

[ Sighs ] Sorry. Is there something wrong? Yeah, yeah, yeah, it was just michael. He wanted to meet. Go! Go! What? Yeah. Uh, we're in the middle of something pretty major. Well, I mean, maxie and i can take care of this. Go have fun. Tell michael hi. Are you sure? Yes, I'm positive. Okay, well, let me know if there's anything I can do on my end. Yes, I will. Go, go, go. Listen. I didn't want to say this in front of sasha, because I don't want her to see this part of me, but I hate ava jerome more than god hates sin. There's no way I'm lowering myself by exploiting kiki's death. Whoa. No one wants that. How can we avoid it? Ava was estranged from kiki when she died. We keep the focus on ava. We let her tell as little or as much about kiki as she wants. We protect kiki, we'll be protecting ava. No, we won'T. Yes, we will. You know that she's gonna play the sad, grieving mother, and we all know that's not true. We all know that ava made kiki's life miserable. I'm not doing it. Maxie, I would rather bankrupt this magazine than put ava jerome's face on the cover. Then you're letting her win. Hey, carly. Hey. How are you feeling? Good. Great, actually. Just what I like to hear. Yeah. The baby's moving around a ton, so I think I have a future athlete on my hands. Hopefully he or she is letting you rest at night. For the most part, yes. So, are you ready for today? The msafp, right? Very good. It's part of multiple marker screening and afp plus. Think of it as a glorified blood test. Wow. Are you having reservations? I just wonder if it's necessary. Okay. I-is it better to go through it and to go through the anxiety that comes along with it? Or trust the cvs test, you know, that there are no complications? I don't know. I just feel like today's medicine, we're screening for things just because we can. Yeah, it's a real balancing act, isn't it? Yeah. What's necessary and what's going overboard. With your history, I'm in favor of checking all the boxes. Okay.

[ Chuckles ] Better safe than sorry. Let's do it. Hey. Hey. Oh, I, uh, hope I didn't pull you away from anything important. Oh, just work, but nina gave me her blessing. I literally say the name "michael," and she's like, "go, fly like the wind!" Oh, yeah? Well, you are welcome, then.

[ Chuckles ] So, what's up? The text was kind of cryptic. N-no, no, it wasn'T. "Meet me at charlie's if you can. Oh, and how do you feel about small planes?" Well? I'm fine with them. Even an eight-seater? Yep. Okay. Then why don't you take one with me to martha's vineyard?

[ Monitor beeping ]

[ Sighs ] Have I told you lately how proud I am of you and how wonderfully you've handled all this? Aunt stella... no, I am serious. You've had to be the grown-up and the doctor, when you're the son and just as scared as the rest of us. You always think I'm perfect. And? I don't lie.

[ Chuckles ] You know, knowing you and mom and curtis -- knowing you guys all believe in me... it gives me the confidence to keep going. So thank you. And having you -- this -- this strong, kick-ass woman...

[ Laughs ] ...It matters. I-it matters. I love you so much. I love you, too. I love you. I'm so proud of you. You've been spending too much time in this hospital. I go where you are. Did everything -- everything went perfectly. Perfectly. I don't even know if it's possible, but I already feel better.

[ Chuckles ] You made it. And this nightmare is finally over. I've never been so happy to wake up from one.

Ava will think that we're celebrating her as some sort of hero. So? Let's be real. Ava's always gonna consider herself the heroine of her own story. But our readers aren't stupid, nina. They're gonna see her for who she really is. A shallow, despicable, vain human being? Yes. A woman who has caused you so much misery, and now you get to make money off of her? You win. You get to use ava by playing her fatal weakness.

[ Gasps ] Her vanity. Her vanity. Her vanity. Good morning, ladies. Any, uh, progress on the september issue? I can't talk right now. I need to track down ava jerome. W-- no? Oh, my god. I completely freaked you out. Michael... no, look, we just started doing whatever it is we're doing, and I-I go and ask you to -- to -- to go away with me? No, that's -- I'm so -- you know what? Just completely forget -- michael. I'm looking at you like this because -- because you're completely horrified. I know. No, because martha's vineyard is my absolute favorite place on earth. Really? I was just surprised, that's all. Oh. Okay.

[ Chuckles ] Uh, 'cause I'm -- I'm -- I'm meeting a venture capitalist. Um, we're going in on a kelp farm together. Of course you are. And he asked me to his place for a few days, and I thought it'd be fun if we, you know -- we could go together. The business part will only take up so much of my time, and we can do whatever we want with the -- with the rest. That sounds incredible. Yeah? So -- so -- so you're in? I'm 100% in, yes!

[ Both chuckle ] I'm so excited. Yeah, me, too.

[ Monitor beeping ] How's the patient? Next stop -- pentonville. Great. Home sweet home. So, jordan's awake, surgery went really well, and I swear she already looks better.

[ Exhales deeply ] We pulled it off. Yeah, we did. Well, technically ryan did. With the stroke of a pen. Do you have any idea what a rock star you are?

[ Chuckles ] I felt your love and support the whole time. Thank you. All three of you. Now, no getting sappy. This is time for celebration! -[ Chuckles ] -Real talk. Oh, speaking of celebrating, guess what comes out next month? What? That documentary on snowy owl migration. Ohh! A documentary on snowy owl migration? And, what, that's in movie theaters? I mean, not in all of them, but a -- a select few. A select few who want to lose a ton of money.

[ Laughter ] Stop. T.J. And I have been looking forward to this. Oh, well, I'm glad you made it, 'cause there's no way I'm going with you, T., To that snooze fest. T.J., Let's go to the store. Okay, uh, why? Well, you know I love this hospital, but the food leaves a lot to be desired, and I want to make something tasty for your first meal post-surgery. Oh, you don't have to do that. No, no, let auntie do that, okay? 'Cause a brother hungry.

[ Chuckles ] You ready? Mm-hmm. Okay, but I'm driving. Last time you missed that light on washington. No, it's not running a light if it's yellow. Now you're color blind? Oh, boy, shush. Come on.

[ Door closes ] I can't imagine missing any of this.

[ Sighs ] And thank god you'll never, ever have to.

So, I haven't had the chance to suck up to you yet. Ah, why would you do that? You're my new boss. Okay, just regular human interaction will be just fine. Suit yourself.

[ Chuckling ] Okay. Uh, what did nina say before she left? Something about ava jerome? Oh, that wasn't about ava. That was about nina and how much she loves this magazine and will do anything to make sure it's successful. Well, I like to hear that. And if this works out -- I think it will -- you'll get your revenue from crimson, and ava jerome's gonna get exactly what she deserves. Gerard, hello. This is ava jerome calling. Um, as I recall, you were looking for a matisse, and I believe that I have a lead on a private collector who might be willing to sell, so please do call me if you're still interested. I've been looking for you. Oh, nina. What -- what do you want? I want to offer you the cover of crimson. I don't think you understand how amazing this is gonna be. First of all, we have to ride the carousel in oak bluffs. A carousel? It's non-negotiable. Okay, then. Crabbing at the great pond, the edgartown lighthouse, the aquinnah cliffs. Aquinnah, uh... a buddy of mine told me to check out the beaches there.

[ Laughs ] What? Well, you know why, right? Uh, n-no. It's bathing suit optional. Oh. Well, then we are definitely going.

[ Chuckles ] So, when are we leaving? Uh, as soon to now as possible. I need to pack! Yeah, well, apparently not a bathing suit, though.

[ Chuckles ] If it's optional for me, it's optional for you, too, you know? Alright, then. Hard part's over. Now we just wait. Oh, are you kidding?

[ Both laugh ] I regretted the words as soon as I uttered them.

[ Sighs ] I know these tests can cause a lot of anxiety. Just try to relax. Mm, I'll do my best.

[ Chuckles ] In the meantime, can you ask the lab to put a rush on my results? I'll do my best. Have a great day, carly. You, too.

[ Sighs ] Alright, kiddo. Let's go.

[ Elevator bell dings ] Can I get you anything? No, I'm good.

[ Sighs ] You okay? Oh, I am way better than okay. It all worked. You know? Mm. I honestly... I didn't know if we'd ever get here. I hoped. God knows I prayed. But I just didn't know. It's remarkable. I mean, unbelievable, really -- that ryan changed his mind and gave me his kidney. The lord works in mysterious ways. You're telling me.

[ Elevator bell dings ]
