What? I love you, Maxie. Like there's no tomorrow.
Nathan? Nathan? Nathan!
Lulu: "Detective Nathan West is in critical condition tonight. Fighting for his life, his wife, Maxie, is by his side. According to sources, a few hours ago, Detective West found himself face-to-face with his father, notorious criminal Cesar Faison."
"After assaulting Ms. Jones' guard and rendering him unconscious, Faison shot at a bystander, aurora media coo Peter August. With August temporarily out of commission, Faison took Ms. Jones hostage. Worth noting -- Maxie Jones and Detective West are expecting their first child. West arrived on the scene, gunfire was exchanged, and the detective was critically injured. Faison fled, but because of detective West, Ms. Jones and her unborn child are safe." What's going on? We were talking, and the alarm started blaring. Get his wife out of here, please!
Maxie, please. You need to give us room to work.
Sweetie. Sweetheart. He was fine.
He was fine, and then...
Still in V-fib! Charge to 200. Charging.
Come on, Nathan. Come on, come on, come on.
Lulu: "As he was being wheeled out by paramedics, West gave a thumbs-up to his wife, a silent gesture that he would be okay, this would not be their ending. Please. That's the kind of man Nathan West is. Strong. Positive. Reassuring others in the face of his own pain. Nathan West is the true definition of a hero." [Panting] He's gone. [Sniffles] We need to call it. Time of death, 8:49 p.m.
No. Please. I'm so sorry. No! Nathan's gone. [Sobbing] Well, looks like they're getting him all wired up if you want to take a crack at him. Let's go. But be warned -- from what I've heard, you can't trust a word the bastard says. [Monitor beeping] I, uh... I see you got the girl. Jason's wife. Are you here to thank me? Hey. Lulu. Um, I'm sorry for interrupting. Mind if I have a seat? No, it's okay. I -- I could use a break. Well, hey, I heard about Nathan West. Any word on how he's doing? Well, Dante's with him at the hospital, and he hasn't called me, so I'm hoping... you're hoping that no news is good news. Yeah. Well, I'm here to pick up an order for Jordan because it figures to be a long night. Is there something I can help you with, Stella? My landlord is at it again. No heat! Can you believe it? On a night like tonight. No, that's awful. I don't want your pity. I want you to do something about it! I plan to. Oh, when? Next summer, when it won't even matter anymore? When I have evidence of criminal activity. Oh, you want evidence? Come on over to my apartment and record the temperature. Then find that greedy snake and arrest him! What's so hard about that? We did everything we could for him. [Sobbing] No... the damage was just too extensive. I'm so sorry. [Sobs] Maxie, Maxie, sweetheart, I'm so sorry -- no. Stop! I -- I want to see him. Maxie, are you sure? Mom, he is my husband! Yes, I'm sure! We can go with you. No! Thank you, but no. Take as much time as you need. [Sobbing continues] I don't know how to do this. [Sniffles] How do I say goodbye? To you. "You helped me recognize I have the strength to save myself." Do you remember that from our wedding vows? I'm trying to find the strength right now, Nathan, but I can't. It doesn't work without you. Nothing is gonna work without you. God, those -- [Chuckles] Those stupid handcuffs. Do you remember how annoyed we were to be chained together? I would give anything to go back to that. [Sniffles] To be looking up at the fireworks and realize that, even though I couldn't admit it to myself at the time, I was standing next to the greatest man I will ever know. I love you, Nathan. I'm always gonna love you. We both will.
You probably have to take him away soon, right? There's a procedure we're supposed to follow, but there's no rush. [Sniffles] I'll check on Maxie. I'll do it.
Sweetheart, it's time to go. [Sobs] I don't think I can leave him. I can help you. [Sniffles] I'm so sorry, Nathan. And thank you. For everything. I'll never forget. I can do that. Of course. [Sighs, sniffles] I'm not gonna make this a whole big thing 'cause I know you'd just tell me to shut up. But the one thing I will say is... best partner... damn it, you're the best friend I've ever had. And don't worry about Maxie and that baby, okay? I got them. All right, brother? You got my word. I got them. [Exhales sharply] This is -- I can't believe this has happened. It's so surreal. I know. It's my baby brother. I'm so sorry, Nina. If I could make it so it never happened, I would. Can you do me a favor? Anything. Can you check on Charlotte, please? Right now? Uh-huh. Yeah. I just -- I need her to know that I'm not gonna be there to tuck her in tonight, but -- but I'll be there when she wakes up in the morning. Can you tell her that, please? I just need good news. I need good news. I need to hear that maybe she's having a tea party with her dolls, and she's getting them to brush their teeth. I just -- I need you to do that, please. She's always been a stickler for oral hygiene. [Chuckles] Can you tell her that I love her? I will. Okay. [Breathes shakily] [Sobbing] Thank you for loving my brother. You lit up his world. You loved him like he deserved to be loved. [Breathing heavily] [Exhales sharply]
Dante, what's the update? Uh, detective West passed away at 8:49 this evening. Have they taken the body to the morgue yet? Um, any minute now. One of my detectives was just killed in the line of duty. [Sighs] Thank you. So, what were you working on? An article about what happened to Nathan tonight. Oh, well, let's hope it has a happy ending, huh? It will. It has to.
[Cell phone rings]
Oh, it's Dante. Hey, what's going on? Uh, you need to get over to the hospital. Why? Is Nathan awake? Uh, you just -- you need to get over to the hospital, okay? What happened? He's not back in surgery, is he? Lulu, please. Just tell me what's going on, Dante. Tell me! Please! He didn't make it. What? No. It happened really fast. Oh, my God. I know. How's Maxie? No, never mind. Never mind, I'm on my way. Oh, God, he didn't make it? [Sighs] Okay, look, you're in no position to drive, okay? I'll take you. Come on. Come on. Did you tell your wife that Nathan is dead thanks to her? Come on. Liesl, Nathan and Maxie are our best friends. Lulu didn't want this. And yet she made it happen. Because she's a vain, shallow excuse for a human being who had no idea what she was toying with. But you did, and you should have stopped her. How was I gonna do that? Was I gonna stop Nathan, too? 'Cause he wanted to take that risk. Don't you dare blame Nathan. He was naive. His courage led him to make a foolish choice, but it was Lulu who put this in motion. Out of sheer ambition. After being a reporter for, what, all of five minutes? Okay, just -- just stop. Okay? Everybody's grieving right now. Funny. I don't hear you arguing with me. It amuses you, doesn't it? Playing games with people's lives? Are you sure you want to stick with this replacement? Why don't you go back to the man you love? Screw you. I'm not gonna let him mess with my head. It's okay, it's okay. You're not gonna mess with my head. Where's the flash drive? Sorry? The flash drive. Dr. Maddox, in some procedure that I have yet to be able to understand, put my old memories onto a flash drive, gave it to Anna Devane. It disappeared. What'd you do with it? I didn't even know it existed. -He's lying. -I know he's lying. Why would I be lying? What would be the point? It's -- don't. Just forget the flash drive for a minute. What was your plan, huh? What was your end game? Why keep Jason alive? You found out that your mind-control techniques didn't work on him. Why keep him around? [Sighs] Well, I wanted to kill him. I-I didn't keep him alive. He's way too dangerous to have running around. You know that. Then who? Your son, who apparently Drew knows? That's correct. Okay. Where do we find him? You help me out of here, and I'll tell you where you find him.
Me out, and I'll tell you who Henrik is. He'll answer all your questions. All right, stop. Let me be clear. I'll go the rest of my life never knowing a damn thing before I help you. You are gonna spend whatever remaining days you have in prison. In that short remaining time, you're gonna spend it in a cage. Well, let me make something absolutely clear, young man. You still need Henrik. And I hope you enjoy hell. [Scoffs] We'll find your son on our own.
What are you doing here? Faison tried to kill me tonight. I wanted to know what happened to him. Nothing, but that's gonna change. You seem upset. I am! Is it your brother? My brother's dead! My brother's dead! And that son of a bitch killed him. Is that his room? Do I have the right room? Nina, I am -- is that his room? Is that his room? Tell me. Is that his room? It's his room. Sorry, ma'am, you can't come in.
No, no, no. You cannot come in here. No! No! You can't go in there! You killed my brother! No! Shh. No! No! [Sobbing] Murderer! Shh, shh, shh. Come in. Can you all -- all gather around? [Sighs] As you all know, detective West suffered a gunshot wound tonight. I just heard from detective Falconeri that he didn't make it. It's always rough when we lose one of our own. I'm sure you'll join me in offering our deepest sympathies to Nathan's family. Where's Nathan? Hey. Come here. Oh, my God. I don't believe this. It's not real. I know, I know, I know. [Sobbing] Thank you for bringing her. No problem. Is Jordan here? Not yet, no. How are you? Are you okay? I don't know. They just -- they just wheeled his body away. Oh, God! Oh, God. Oh, God, how did this happen? How is he gone? How? You need to eat, take a shower. Hopefully get some rest. Wait. Maxie. The baby? No! Don't move. I think I just felt the baby. I did. [Sniffles] [Sniffles] Should I go in there? I think you should, uh, give her some space, okay? I wouldn't know what to say. Honestly, what do you say in a situation like this? Nothing. There's nothing you can say. I just tried to put myself in her position, and I -- I can't. It's like my mind just shuts down. The thought of losing you... I can't even handle the thought, and Maxie is actually living it. Oh, I just feel so terrible for her and for you. Hey. Nathan was your friend, too, okay? He was your partner, Dante. He was basically your brother. What can I do? You're here. You're here. That's enough. [Sniffles] Hey. How you doing? I -- I, uh... I just stopped downstairs to see the bo-- to... to see Nathan. How's -- how's Maxie? She's about as beat up as you might expect. I need to offer my condolences. Okay. In a second, all right? How are you doing? It happened on my watch. Okay, look, you are not responsible. He's such a good man. He's such a good cop, Curtis. And he's about to have a baby. It's not fair. No. It's not fair. No, baby, it's not. Time to get you home. Hey, what do you say we, uh, grab a coffee, okay? Get some air, take a walk. Yeah?
Okay. Thank you. I wish there was more I could do for you. How's Charlotte? She's fine. You were right -- she was brushing her dolls' teeth when I called. Of course. I told her you loved her, we'll see her in the morning. I used to tell j that. I used to... go out with my friends or with a boy or something, and I'd say, "I'm not gonna be here when you close your eyes, but I'm gonna be here when you open them." He's never gonna open his eyes. [Sobbing] Come here. It's all right. I'm not going anywhere. Did Faison give you any information? No. He tried to cut a deal. He said he'd tell us how to find his son if we helped him escape. I'm sure you laughed in his face. Something like that. Man, that guy's a piece of work. Come on. Are you okay?
You sure? No, I'm just thinking about Maxie right now and how lonely she must feel. I mean, a couple hours ago, her life was... everything was fine. Yes, it was fine. And just like that, it's not. Her -- her life went from light to dark, and everything's different now.
You look positively cadaverous. Be careful, now. They might wheel you off to the morgue before you're good and ready. You would love that, wouldn't you? Can you blame me? So... how are you feeling? Hmm? Like I was shot. How about that? You have to admit, Jason Morgan does good work. He couldn't have found a better spot if I had picked it myself. Enough. Now, you tell me what you know about that flash drive containing drew's memories. Oh, I don't owe you any explanations. I don't owe you anything. Our days together are over...dad.
Nathan: That's the sweetest thing I've ever seen. Morning. Morning. Feels right, doesn't it? Mm-hmm. It's perfect. I don't know -- the prospect of fatherhood is kind of turning me into mush, though. Not on the outside. You know, we could go back to our place. You could spend the night there. Let me draw you a bath, honey.
[Knocking on door]
Who could that be? I'm sorry to interrupt, but I found these after you all left. What is it? Nathan's belongings. I thought Maxie would want them. Thank you. Of course. What are you doing? There's plenty of time to go through this. No. I -- I want to go through them now. Do you have any idea how exhausting it was? Year after year, seeking your approval. Constantly being rebuffed. Then a light bulb went off. Why, oh, why was I trying to be like you? I am my own man. You're a boy. Scared and weak, worthless. Now tell me about the flash drive. [Chuckles] Yes! That is so you. Slapping me down with one hand while asking for something with the other. Speaking of... how come you're not hurt? [Scoffs] I aim to kill. Bulletproof vest. You're a coward. Always been a coward. Well, you always taught me how to plan ahead, dad. [Scoffs] Yeah. You couldn't even manage to kill Jason Morgan. That's how pathetic you are. Why would I kill the perfect assassin when I could turn him loose... on you? You're the one that shot Jason in the back. All I had to do was keep him contained until I was ready to see you die. Then I could just get out of the way, let him take his revenge. Your "perfect assassin" didn't take me out. I guess I should be disappointed, right? But, you know, I'm actually grateful. Because now I get to watch as you bask in the harsh reality of what you've done. If you mean you and the damage I brought down... I don't mean me! Nathan is dead, dad. You killed the wrong son. [Sighs] [Sniffles] He was always on time. Unlike you. Unlike me. Which you would think would have driven him crazy, but... you know what he always used to say? What? "You're worth waiting for." J didn't like you. Yeah, I know. No, he didn't like you at all. He kept on reminding me that you broke my heart. That's my deepest regret. It was just the most amazing thing -- I told him that I was gonna be with you, it didn't matter what he had to say. You know what he did? He gave his blessing. Because he'd rather see me happy than be right. I had a lot of respect for your brother. He was the only thing good in that horrible, horrible family of mine. That penthouse in new York was hell. [Sighs] It was like a hall of statues. Nothing was real. Everything was fake, except J. J was real. J was warm, and j was love. Oh, my God, everybody about me physically hurts right now. [Sobbing] No. Listen, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. Is Nathan really gone? Thanks to you. I didn't get to know him. But, don't you see, that's the best part. You're so old and frail, you didn't even recognize your own son before you pulled the trigger. Get out. And miss this? Get out. No, dad. No. I've waited a long time. All those years, you felt so superior. You wanted to treat me like dirt, kick me around. All the while, I was playing you. How does it feel? To be outmaneuvered by the son you despised? I'll tell you how I feel -- amazing. See, I've got the ultimate leverage now over Jason Morgan and Drew Cain because I have the memories on that flash drive. And, even better, I'm working for Sam and Drew, and they have no idea. So, thank you. Thank you, dad. Really. From the bottom of my heart, you set me up beautifully. Oh, well, I'm gloating, aren't I? It's so unbecoming. You know what they say -- living well is the best revenge. And I am. I'm living great. Get out. I'm sitting high in the catbird seat, spending all your money. Listen. There's something wrong -- and that should be enough, right?
[Monitors beeping rapidly]
But I tell you, it isn't. It can't be. Because, for me, the real revenge is knowing that you killed the son you loved and wanted while the son you rejected and hated is alive and well. I win, dad. You lose. [Chuckles] At your own twisted game.
Let's get out of here. Let's go home. Let's get Charlotte and cherish what we got. How's that sound? I love you. I love you. Merry Christmas, Mom. Merry Christmas to you, too, son. Thank you. What's the matter? Not feeling so hot now?
[Monitors beeping rapidly]
Oh! Call the nurse. Call the nurse.
Oh, Dad. You taught me better than that. Do you want to get married? Get a house with a fence we can tell all our friends we're getting married do you want to have children? We can drive them to school make up all kinds of rules when we have children take this with you. I want you to show it off to everyone in the squad room. Okay. Right there. I love you. I love you. [Chuckles] I love you, I love you, I love you. We love you more. Impossible. And I look up at the world spinning round and round but I look up at the world it feels so lonesome now
