Nikolas: I haven't had any blackouts or seizures in weeks. This drug, it's working. I mean, it's giving me some semblance of normal life.
Emily: It's not that simple.
Nikolas: But I -- I need you. Don't you understand? I need you. I mean, I am doing all of this -- all of this -- so we can be together.
Emily: Nikolas. You're seeing me less because you know this is wrong.
Claudia: [Laughs] You actually believe that she accidentally got pregnant with a baby that she wanted and you didn't? Oh, for a brain surgeon, you're not very bright.
Robin: I don't see how my pregnancy is any of your business.
Claudia: I was just making conversation. Patrick here is the one who brought up the baby you tricked him into having.
Jason: I'm sorry I've taken so much from you.
Monica: No, no. You are not to blame.
Jason: Yes, I am.
Carly: You could have saved Michael or Kate, and you chose Kate?
Alexis: Carly, I don't blame you for being upset--
Carly: Is that what happened?
Sonny: I saw a rifle, Carly, and I reacted.
Carly: You put our son in the line of fire to save Kate.
Robin: So, you couldn't find someone else to get drunk with?
Claudia: Guess I'm just irresistible.
Patrick: Hey, you know what? I was defending your honor. See, here's the thing. I was an ass to Robin. She started talking about babies, and we broke up, and I basically jumped on the first gurney that I could find with the first woman that I could find, and -- I told her in not so many ways I didn't want to be a father. She's basically just doing what I wanted her to do so...
Claudia: You are good, honey.
Patrick: Leave her alone.
Claudia: I'm just trying to help you out, okay?
Robin: I don't think he needs your help.
Claudia: Relax. I can see where you would be threatened.
Robin: Okay, I don't even know why you're talking to this woman.
Patrick: She wanted to thank me for saving Michael's life.
Harper: We're still piecing together exactly what happened.
Carly: Yeah, well, you better get to work, and you better find proof that Sonny left his 12-year-old boy alone and unprotected, and that's why he was shot.
Kate: Carly, it happened very quickly--
Carly: You shut your mouth because you took my kid to that warehouse.
Kate: I wanted to help Michael.
Carly: You wanted to help yourself to Sonny, so you took my kid somewhere you knew was dangerous.
Sonny: Don't yell at her. I'm the one to blame.
Carly: You bet you're the one to blame. You are the most selfish man I've ever met. You only think about yourself or your trophy of the moment.
Carly: You decided you're in love with Kate, so anything and everything goes out the window, including your kid?
Sonny: I was wrong! What do you want me to say? I love my kids.
Carly: You saw the rifle. And Michael and Kate were standing there, and who did you instinctively protect? Kate! Michael didn't even cross your mind.
Sonny: I would do anything for Michael.
Carly: Except love and protect him. You swore to me, you swore to me that you were gonna protect him and keep them safe. And when his life was on the line, you didn't give a damn. Michael was disposable.
Kate: Carly, don't say that.
Carly: Shut your mouth! You don't care about Michael. You only care about who you're sleeping with at any given moment. You don't deserve to be a parent, and you are not Michael's father any more.
Jason: I put Michael in the line of fire, starting with the first lie I told about being his father. I thought that I was saving him from the Quartermaines, but I was risking his life, so I'm the reason that he was at that warehouse.
Monica: No, Jason, listen. Any kind of mistakes that you made with Michael were just out of ignorance. It wasn't because you were malicious or you wanted to hurt him.
Jason: What difference does that make to Michael right now?
Monica: You love Michael, and he knows that. And you want the very, very best for him, and he knows that, as well. And I forgive you. I forgive you. I just pray you forgive yourself. Please.
[Cell phone rings]
Jason: Sorry. Yeah.
Elizabeth: Jason, it's me. Carly needs you right away.
Jason: Okay, thanks.
Nadine: I mean, Nikolas was my patient. End of story. I shouldn't let myself get carried away.
Leyla: Yeah, what were you thinking? I mean, what could you possibly see in a handsome, rich, bona fide prince?
Nadine: What I thought was that I could save him. But he doesn't want to be saved. He wants to keep doing things his own completely self-destructive way.
Leyla: Oh, dear, you did get carried away, didn't you?
Nadine: Okay, so he invites me out to see his horse and meet his son, Spencer.
Leyla: He introduced you to his son? That's a big step.
Nadine: Yeah, and we were having a great time, and it seemed like, for all our differences in background and social standing, that we actually had things in common. And then, out of the blue, he just pulls away and asks me to leave, so that's it. Done. No, no more beating my head against the wall.
Leyla: Right, if you say so.
Nadine: No, I'm serious. If Nikolas needs help and wants it, then he'll ask for it. Otherwise, he is on his own.
Leyla: You know what I'm hearing? You speeding head-first into the same disaster that nearly wrecked me.
Nikolas: I know that I've been seeing you less and less lately. I don't understand it. I even asked Dr. Devlin about it. He didn't have an answer for me. I don't understand why.
Emily: I think you understand --
Emily: More than you think you do.
Nikolas: Why are you fighting me on this? I love you. I want to share my life with you. Is that so bad?
Emily: No, because you're lying to everyone that you love. Because you're lying to yourself. And why? What, you're gonna die because you're afraid to live without me?
Nikolas: I remember every detail of the night you died. I woke up. You were lying on the ballroom floor, completely still. I thought you were asleep or passed out, and I tried to wake you up. I tried to will your eyes open. But they never did. They never opened. And then the police came. They tried to take you away from me, Emily. But I wouldn't let them. Because I refused to believe that you were really gone.
Emily: But I am.
Emily: I died that night. And none of this -- me, sitting here, this conversation, none of this is real.
Nikolas: It's more real than my life would be without you altogether. Don't you understand? None of this -- I don't have anything if you're not in my life to share it with. God, I can't -- I can't do this anymore. I can't take it any more. If I'm a coward because I want you in my life, I don't care. I love you and I want you in my life.
Emily: I love you so much.
Nikolas: Then you -- then you understand why I can't let you go.
Emily: Nikolas, you have to. You have to for your own sake, for Spencerís. You have to let me go so that you can live.
Nikolas: [Inaudible] Look at me. I am, I'm alive. I am alive because you're with me right now. I don't care what lies I've told or what I've done to have this moment with you right now. As long as we're together, that's all I care about.
Leyla: When Patrick went back to Robin, I felt hurt and used and angry.
Nadine: Yeah, I'm not in that deep.
Leyla: You sure about that? I mean, you're hoping that when Nikolas finally comes to grips with the fact that Emilyís dead, he'll realize how much he cares about you.
Nadine: Sounds pretty pathetic when you put it that way.
Leyla: I am an expert on pathetic. I mean, there I was, pining away over Patrick, and the truth is he never promised me a thing, and I never told him what I had invested.
Nadine: Do you think it would have made a difference if you had?
Leyla: Maybe. Maybe he would have taken it all a bit more seriously or maybe not. The window of opportunity has passed, so I guess I'll never know.
Nadine: I'm sorry.
Leyla: Don't pity me. Learn from me. Look, you can either go to Nikolas and tell him exactly how you feel or walk away. But don't lie to yourself that your heart's not on the line.
Patrick: Miss Zacchara was worried that her brother would be blamed for the shooting of Michael and that Sonny would turn around and kill him.
Claudia: My brother's innocent, and I just sincerely want to thank you again for working your magic in the O.R. No harm, no foul.
Patrick: It's a lovely world you live in where children are targeted right along with their parents.
Claudia: I would never target a child. Neither would my brother. This is obviously a third party who wanted to take out Sonny and didn't care who got caught in the middle.
Patrick: Yet another reason to leave fathers out of the equation.
Claudia: You've really got him dancing on a string, girl.
Robin: Okay, it's time to go. You know, you're right about one thing. Patrick did save Michael.
Patrick: For all the good it did. Michael's in a permanent coma,
Claudia: Oh, my God, I'm sorry. I didn't know that.
Robin: You know, what's crazy to me is that there's a 12-year-old boy lying in a hospital bed incapacitated for the rest of his life, and all you can think about is whether or not your brother gets blamed for it. Here. Come on.
Carly: I owe you an apology, Alexis. You were right when you tried to hide Kristina from Sonny. I called you paranoid. I called you overprotective, but you were trying to be a good mother. Not like me. I failed my kid.
Alexis: You didn't fail him, Carly,
Carly: Oh, yeah, I did. Sonny's poison, and I knew it, I ignored it, and now Michael's paying for it.
Sonny: I never wanted Michael to get hurt, Carly. You know that.
Carly: Yeah, because you made some kind of bargain with the Zaccharas, and then you went to Michael and you said, "Guess what, son? I made peace with my enemies, so now we're all gonna be safe." And he said, "That's great, dad." Why? Because he trusted you. Because he's a sweet, innocent boy who believed in you and who believed that you were gonna protect him.
Sonny: I wanted to show Michael that he can live without violence for the first time ever, pretty much, right?
Carly: Yeah, and you thought you could just snap your fingers, and that danger would leave. You risked your son's life on wishful thinking, Sonny.
Sonny: How many times do I have to say it? I was wrong.
Carly: Oh, you don't give a damn about your kids, Sonny, except when you want to pull them out as a little badges --
Alexis: Carly --
Carly: And use them to pretend that you're some kind of a good father.
Sonny: Okay, you know what? You can hate me all you want, but don't you ever tell me that I don't love my kids.
Carly: If you loved Michael, you would have saved him.
Alexis: This needs to stop. You have a little boy in there that needs you both.
Carly: Yeah. That's my little boy in there. He's not Sonny's son. Don't you come near Michael again.
Nikolas: Don't go. Don't go.
Emily: Look, you have decisions to make.
Nikolas: I've -- I've already chosen. I want to be with you, no matter what the cost.
Emily: Nikolas, I'm only in your mind. You're going to see me less and less. Until one day, I'm gone forever.
Emily: Because the better part of you, Nikolas, the part of you that knows what's right wants me to.
Nikolas: I don't know how to live without you.
Emily: Yes, you do. Yes, you do.
Nikolas: Don't do this! Emily, I need you.
Nadine: Emily's going to have to wait. You and I need to get a few things straight.
Diane: Judging by your appearance, I assume Sonny isn't home.
Max: Mr. C's at the hospital visiting Michael.
Diane: I'll wait.
Max: He'll probably be a while.
Diane: I'm sure he will be. However, you look like you could use some company. And I just happen to be available.
Max: You're very observant, Diane.
Diane: Yeah, that's why they pay me the big bucks.
Max: Please, have a seat.
Diane: Thank you.
Diane: It's terrible what's happened to Michael.
Max: You know, I wanted to go to the warehouse with Mr. C. But he told me not to come. Mr. C and his family need round-the-clock protection. I knew that, and I stayed behind.
Diane: That's exactly what Sonny told you to do.
Max: I should have shadowed him. What kind of a bodyguard am I?
Diane: You have always been a superb employee.
Max: And it takes one mistake, and I made it.
Diane: You're being a little too hard on yourself, Max.
Max: Look, I've been guarding Michael most of his life. You know, driving him around, watching over him, making sure he's safe whether he's in the park or he's at home or he's at a friend's house. And when it really mattered, I wasn't there.
Diane: Max. You are a sweet and wonderful man, but you're an idiot.
Patrick: The only reason why you were at Jakeís is because I was dumb enough to go get drunk and talk to...Miss--
Robin: Actually, to be accurate, you drunk-dialed me. And I didn't know until I got to Jakeís that you were drunk enough to talk to Claudia.
Patrick: I wasn't hitting on her. I didn't do anything. She--
Robin: I know. It's fine.
Patrick: Because she's intolerant, she's ignorant--
Robin: Okay. Can we focus here? I'm talking about you.
Patrick: In that case, my favorite subject. Go ahead. Hit me.
Robin: Well, um, I'm worried about you. I think maybe you're blaming yourself for Michael being in a coma.
Patrick: The damage was too great to Michael. There's no -- no surgery would have saved him.
Robin: That's right. There isn't, but you are a perfectionist, and you've been known to hold yourself to impossible standards.
Patrick: Oh, I wasn't drinking -- I wasn't drinking because of Michael. I left the hospital and went to Jakeís because I couldn't stop thinking about Michael's father in this situation.
Sonny: What are you doing?
Policeman: Forensics is done. Place is no longer a crime scene.
[Indistinct police radio chatter]
Kate: I was afraid I'd find you here.
Jason: Any change?
Carly: No. Sonny was here. And he brought Kate. I left them alone so they could have some time with Michael. Then when I came back, Alexis was here with a detective, and they were asking him questions about the shooting.
Jason: Go on.
Carly: I don't know if you want to hear this, Jason. I don't want your heart to break anymore than it's breaking. And it's my fault.
Jason: Just tell me -- tell me what happened.
Carly: Sonny saw the rifle. He knew the shot was coming. And he pushed Kate out of the way. He let Michael stand there. Michael was unprotected. This is the man I chose to be Michael's father.
Nadine: Is Emily here?
Nadine: I don't believe you.
Nikolas: What are you doing?
Nadine: Did I hit her?
Nikolas: She's not here.
Nadine: Exactly. Emily died the night of the black and white ball, and she's gone. Forever, and there's nothing you can do to change that.
Nikolas: Listen, we've been through this. You know my situation.
Nadine: I know that you've turned a fantasy into your entire world. You're throwing your life away, because you can't face the fact that the woman you love doesn't exist except in your mind. That's the dumbest reason to die that I have ever heard of. So, if you won't save yourself by getting rid of Emily, I will gladly do it for you. Tell me when I hit her.
Diane: You work for Sonny, just like I do. We can offer our opinions, but we are in no way responsible for his choices. It was his decision to take Michael to that warehouse, his decision to go without guards.
Max: I knew he was wrong.
Diane: And I'm sure you tried to convince him of that, and you failed, right?
Max: I should have followed them.
Diane: Blaming yourself is not going to ease your grief or help you to make sense out of something that is senseless.
Max: You know, I keep thinking about Michael, lying in that bed and not moving. Just a few days ago, he was helping me buy a mountain bike off the internet, you know, showing me how to bid on it. We were talking about all the times we used to bike ride in the park when he was little. I would go real slow so he could keep up with me, and I --
Diane: I understand. I truly, truly do.
Max: I should have done something to stop it, and I hate that I didnít. And no matter what you say, I think you feel the same way.
Diane: What do I have to blame myself about, huh? I mean for every time that I -- that I kept Sonny from being arrested? Every time that I accepted a big fat paycheck just to keep him on the streets, so that he could have access to his children? So that he could put Michael in harm's way? Why should I care? I mean, I have a big closet full of beautiful shoes. There's no blood on these hands.
Max: Shh, it's not your fault.
Diane: Oh, shut up.
Carly: Michael had already been paying for my choices, Jason. I mean, if it hadn't been this, it was just going to be something else.
Jason: You have been the best mother you can be.
Carly: Oh, all my life has been a train wreck. Whenever something good happens, I find a way to screw it up. That's how I got involved with Sonny in the beginning.
Jason: Don't -- don't do this to yourself, right now.
Carly: Oh, come on, I have to do this. I got to take a long look in the mirror and see that this is my fault. I -- I self-destructed, and I cheated on you by crawling into bed with Sonny. That's where it all began.
Jason: Michael was in the warehouse with Sonny, not you. You're the one who wanted to go get him. I stopped you from --
Carly: I brought Sonny into Michael's life, and I made him his father. I set my son on the path that led him to this hospital bed. Jason, this is all on me. It's all on me.
Patrick: You've always said that Sonny was a loving, conscientious father. So, why isn't he involved in Michael's treatment?
Robin: Well, he was there during the surgery.
Patrick: Yeah, and he basically got shoved out of the ICU. He hasn't been back since.
Robin: I don't know, maybe Carly figured that Michael was shot because of what Sonny does for a living.
Patrick: Oh, Carly -- Sonny is a mobster, okay? And as far as I know he always has been, and Carly knew that when she --
Robin: Yes, she did. I am not defending her. Obviously, Carly and I are not friends. I'm just trying to see this from a mother's point of view.
Patrick: So, a mother makes all the decisions for her kids, and when she's not happy with the father, he basically becomes disposable.
Robin: No, it's a little bit different with Carly and Sonny.
Patrick: Because Sonny is not Michael's biological father?
Robin: No, I mean, Sonny and Michael are just as close as any biological father and son could be.
Patrick: Sonny becoming Michael's father was a conscious choice, okay? Carly knew that. Carly knew that Sonny's business was a dangerous business.
Robin: She also probably hoped that Sonny would do everything he could to protect his children.
Patrick: Well, I'm sure -- look, Carly cares about Michael. That's obvious. And she's going to sit by his side for as long as it takes. And I am sure Sonny would do the same way. But what gives her the right to take a father away from his son?
Sonny: The investigation is over. They got what they could get, which was basically nothing.
Kate: So the police can't identify the shooter?
Sonny: It's not going to matter, because even with the police id, it's not going to make Michael any better.
Kate: Well, I'm sure that you want to know who did this.
Sonny: Why? Why do I want to know? So I can find them and kill them? The one thing I didn't do that I should have done to save my son's life was shield him, protect him. But, of course, I didn't do that.
Kate: Sonny, I respect that Carly is Michael's mother. But, she's grieving right now. I can't even imagine how devastating this must be. And she's hurt, and she's angry, and she needs a place to put all of those feelings. And I -- I can see how she could put them on you.
Sonny: She was right about all of it.
Kate: No, she wasnít.
Sonny: Why didn't I -- why didn't I look to see where Michael was? I call myself a father. I don't know the meaning of the word.
Kate: Sonny, don't do this. Don't go there. Don't put all of this on yourself.
Sonny: Who else is there to blame?
Kate: Sonny, I was there. I saw what happened, and you did absolutely nothing wrong.
Coleman: Why so sad, pretty girl?
Claudia: Never mind.
Coleman: Okay. I can take a hint. How about one on me?
Claudia: No, I got someplace that I -- I gotta go.
Elizabeth: Go on, baby. Home, sweet home. Cameron, look at what's on that table? It's your book. I told you you didn't leave it at day care. Do you think you can put it back together for me? Hey, you want to know something?
Elizabeth: Come here. I am the luckiest mommy in the whole wide world. Do you know why?
Elizabeth: Because I have two perfect boys. And I will love you and take care of you and protect you forever and ever and ever. And even when you grow up, and you get real big, and you get married and have a family, I am always going to be there for you. How does that sound?
Elizabeth: Are you sure? Give me some love. I thank God every day that I'm your mommy.
Jason: You, me, and Sonny, we're all to blame. We put Michael in that warehouse.
Carly: He's my baby. It's on me to protect him.
Jason: I'm just trying to hold on to something Monica told me. She said my decisions -- I didn't really know what I was doing in the beginning with Michael, you know.
Carly: Jason, that works for you, but not for me,
Jason: What are you talking about? You did the best you could for him.
Carly: I took this kid wherever I wanted to go. I did what was good for me. And then I justified it by telling myself that it was good for him.
Jason: Carly, you couldn't know how this was going to turn out.
Carly: And if I would have been honest with myself, I would have admitted that Sonny wasn't a good father. He never would have been.
Jason: He made a mistake.
Carly: You would have never made that mistake in a million years. Sonny does what's good for Sonny. Whatever makes Sonny happy, whether it be the girlfriend at the time, the power, everyday violence -- it's always there. And I knew it, Jason, I knew it. But then I fell in love with him. So, I knew, and I ignored it, and I pushed it away. Made up stories that Sonny was such a great man. I'm such a great liar. I even convinced myself. And look where it got me? My son's in a coma.
Jason: Hey. Come on. You could not know the future, Carly.
Carly: I would give anything, Jason. I would give my life if Michael was just okay and up and walking around. I just want him better so bad.
Jason: There's something I need to do. You going to be okay?
Carly: I'm going to be fine. There's nothing else anybody could do to me. The worst has already happened.
Nikolas: This is crazy.
Nadine: No crazier than you've been acting. By the way, have I bonked her yet?
Nikolas: She's not in the room.
Nadine: Why would that be?
Nikolas: Because she told me that I needed to move on for Spencer. Okay, there you go.
Nadine: Ha, that's great. Glad you guys have worked everything out.
Nikolas: I -- I'm sorry if this hurts you in some way. I really am.
Nadine: Okay, fine, you know what? Yeah, yeah, you want me to admit it. Yeah, it hurts me. But it also hurts Spencer. The three of us were playing with his train set, and she shows up, and boom -- you sent me and Spencer away. Everything in the real world, including your own child is being eclipsed by a dead woman. So, forget love -- you left that in the dust a long time ago. This is flat-out obsession.
Nikolas: Emily -- Emily was everything to me. If you don't understand that, I am sorry. It's not my problem.
Nadine: Okay, well, you know, I guess, I seem to have got the message, so give Emily my regards, aah! Ow.
Nikolas: You all right? What did you do?
Nadine: I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine. I'm fine.
Nikolas: No, you can't even -- you can't even stand on it.
Nadine: It'll be fine in just a minute.
Nikolas: Just come over here and sit on the couch. Put your foot up. You're not going to limp all the way back to the mainland. You can just stay here for the night. You'll be fine.
Alexis: Sonny. Sonny, I need to speak with you. I'm sorry to interrupt.
Max: I like Couture.
Alexis: Aah! Oh, my God.
Alexis: Oh, my God!
Kate: The shooting happened so fast. There wasn't time for you to think.
Sonny: So I acted on instinct. I protected you, am I right or not?
Kate: Yeah. Michael wasn't standing next to you, Sonny. I was.
Sonny: But you don't know -- you don't remember. You told the police you didn't remember.
Kate: The police said that he was hit by a ricochet, right? The rifle was aimed at you. If you had gone after him, you would have brought that bullet towards him.
Sonny: A -- a father is supposed to think of his children first, Kate.
Kate: Well, Sonny, you do. You are a very good father. Look, this -- Sonny, this was an accident, nothing more.
Sonny: All these years, I've been telling myself there's nothing more important than family. I am not selfish like Mike. I am not brutal like Deke. Now, my son has been shot, and I hurt him a lot worse than they ever hurt me.
Kate: Okay, you know what? Let's just go home.
Sonny: No, I don't want to go home. I don't want to go home. I don't want to go. I just want to -- I just want to be alone.
Kate: I'm not going to leave, Sonny. I don't think that you should be --
Sonny: Listen to me -- no, no, I am sorry about that. I did not mean to do that. I know you're trying to help, and I love you for that. But the thing is, it's like, every time that I look at you, it reminds me of what I didn't do for my son. Please leave.
Elizabeth: Come in. I was just starring at the phone, trying to figure out when would be the best time to call you.
Jason: Well, we really haven't talked since...
Elizabeth: Jason, I am so sorry. I've been watching you since Michael was brought into the ER. And it's like somebody's -- is cutting your heart out right in front of me, and I can't even do anything to help you.
Jason: It's okay. You called and told me that Carly needed help.
Elizabeth: She was screaming at Sonny, screaming with such rage and grief. And all I could think of was I wouldn't want to live if something like this had happened to Cameron or Jake. I don't think I could keep going. I would lose my mind.
Jason: And I could never ask you to put yourself or your children where Carly and Michael are right now. I could never do to you what I've done to them. You know I love you. I just don't see how we can do this.
Claudia: Michael, I am so sorry. I never meant for this to happen to you. When the shooter saw you in the warehouse, he should have put his gun away. He should have -- he should have left. He should never have taken a chance. It never occurred to me that you would be there with your father. And it should have because I've been there, myself. I know what it's like to grow up in a world full of violence with a bunch of adults who don't give a damn. I never wanted to do that to another person. But I have. I'm so sorry, Michael. This was my motherís. You hold on to it for me, okay?
Carly: You get the hell away from my son.
>> On the next "General Hospital" --
Elizabeth: You're choosing that life over me and the boys.
Sonny: I have failed my son.
Robin: Michael needs you.
Claudia: I'm really sorry.
Carly: Michael's fighting for his life because of people like you. Get out.
