Luke: Will you stop the interrogation? You want me to have the operation; I said I'd have it. Let it go!
Tracy: I want you to start actively fighting to live instead of tempting fate. And then I want you to tell me what you're planning so I can decide whether or not I want to take the ride.
Kate: It's not fair, Sonny. It's not fair for you to show up here acting all tender and concerned like your only agenda is to keep me safe.
Sonny: I want to be with you. But things are n stable right now and I have to know I can protect you.
Kate: And all it will cost is everything that matters to me?
Ric: Well, it appears I missed the beginning of a fascinating conversation. Why would little Jake be in danger?
Lucky: This doesn't concern you.
Ric: Well, the sudden rash of stranglings in this town are very much my business, Officer Spencer. Do you have reason to believe that the man who killed Emily would go after your son?
Georgie: Maxie, I can't find my History book. Have you seen -- Maxie? Maxie, Maxie? Maxie! Oh, my G-- Maxie, Maxie, please talk to me -- Maxie, please, please, please talk to me! Maxie, look at me. Maxie, look at me! Breathe, please! Breathe, please, please, please! Maxie, don't you dare do this to me! Please breathe, please!
Georgie: Oh, my God.
Georgie: God, thank you. Please keep breathing. Please, please breathe. Hold on.
Georgie: Hi -- hi, my name is Georgie Jones and I'm with -- I'm with my sister, Maxie. Someone broke into our house and -- and strangled her. Please get here right now! Please hurry!
Lucky: I was warning Jason to stay away from Elizabeth.
Ric: Still beating your head against that brick wall, huh?
Lucky: Yeah, that's something I do on a regular basis, especially now that Anthony Zacchara killed Emily. She wouldn't have been on his radar if she hadn't been Jason's sister.
Ric: Doesn't that make you feel the least little bit responsible on some level? Nah, of course not -- right. Well, your little sister was murdered and you haven't done a thing to help the investigation. Ah, maybe you're immune to it. Just one more innocent casualty, right?
Mac: Lucky? Lucky, we need your help. Someone just tried to kill Maxie. Let's go -- move!
Sonny: I shouldn't have -- I shouldn't have installed the security or assigned the guards with-- without your permission. But I swear to you, I didn't -- I didn't do it, you know, because I was trying to take away your independence. I did it to accomplish two things -- protect you and I didn't want to alarm you.
Kate: Well, that's very considerate. I'm not sure I believe you.
Sonny: Oh, come -- Kate, come on. What -- what do you mean, you're not sure you believe me? Why are you being so impossible?
Kate: I'm trying.
Sonny: You say one thing, then you change the rules.
Kate: What, what, what, what? Example.
Sonny: Uh -- okay. You asked me not to break your heart for your own good, not to shut you out, not to tell you when things are dangerous, and things right now are -- are dangerous, but you don't -- you don't -- you're not hearing me. I -- okay, I -- you know, I love you, right? And I want to keep on loving you. But I can't do that if you're a target because you're involved with me.
Diane: Oh, very funny, Alexis!
Alexis: I knew I'd find you here.
Sonny: You know what? I was in the middle of talking to her.
Alexis: I know, I understand. I'm terribly sorry but I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave my client's property. Otherwise, it will be well within her rights to have you arrested for trespassing.
Luke: Why, you are pretty damn mad at somebody.
Tracy: You! For treating your life with such callous disregard! I am furious at you that you refuse to put me, your children, or anybody else ahead of your infantile insistence on living life on your terms!
Luke: Wife, for God's sake, you're supposed to know me better than anybody. So I had a couple of heart attacks. All right -- three. So what am I supposed to do -- roll up into a ball and not be me?
Tracy: Luke, I get that you are the last of the great 1960s rebels. Live for today, tomorrow be damned. But let me remind you that most of those people that were busy waving their freak flags high never lived to tell the tale, and, Luke, you're the strongest person I know. If you put your mind to surviving, you will survive. But everything I have seen since you had your first heart attack shows me you're quitting. You're letting death take you. It's so cowardly -- who are you?
Mac: Ok. It's ok. You're ok. Here, sit back a little bit. Let me see your neck. Thank God you walked in when you did.
Maxie: I was, um, really scared.
Mac: I know, I know, sweetheart, but it's over now, ok? It's over. I promise you we're going to find whoever did this, and I will personally make him sorry.
Lucky: Maxie, what can you tell us about this guy?
Maxie: I didn't even see anything.
Mac: Ok, listen, listen, sweetheart. Just start at the beginning, ok?
Maxie: Ahem -- um
Mac: Just tell me exactly what happened.
Maxie: I was in a hurry to change -- and he must have already been here, because I went to go up the stairs, and all of a sudden I had a cord around my neck.
Mac: And you didn't hear anything?
Maxie: Just his breathing.
Mac: Ok, all right. Georgie, what about you?
Georgie: I was on autopilot. I was running through the door looking for something, and all of a sudden, I saw Maxie on the ground, and somebody running past me.
Mac: Then you saw him?
Georgie: Just for a split second.
Lucky: Can you identify him?
Ric: Why would someone want to kill Maxie? Unless, of course, she witnessed something incriminating during the night of the ball? Well, you got to give it to him -- Nikolas knows how to throw one hell of a party. Of course, your sister is dead, but it doesn't seem to trouble you much at all.
Jason: I want -- I want my attorney.
Ric: Yeah, yeah, I know. Don't worry -- the formidable Ms. Miller will be along, I'm sure, eventually. But in the meantime -- near-death experiences make you think, don't they? Well, that is, if you're capable. I know that my perspective on a few things has certainly changed since that night. Hmm. Sonny's blood literally flows through my veins now. My brother -- my long-detested brother -- saved my life. And my father was the catalyst. I don't know -- or maybe it was Kate. Either way, he asked. First time in his life he actually showed that he cared. Huh -- not that I'm looking for any kind of warm, fuzzy family reunion anytime soon, but -- the one thing that hasn't changed for me, Jason, is the absolute contempt that I hold you in with the way you trashed Elizabethís life. You played on her infatuation with you, and you -- you took advantage of her vulnerability during the breakup of her marriage, not because you were serious but because you wanted to satisfy your own selfish needs. You are a shallow, heartless bastard and I think Lucky is absolutely right to want you away from Elizabeth and her kids. Because the fact of the matter is, Jason, wherever you go, death and destruction always follow.
Skye: You know, I'm going to stop you right there and save us both some time. You see, Lorenzoís estate is still tied up in probate and if your offer concerned buying his waterfront property, I'm afraid I'm really not at liberty to sell.
Trevor: I understand -- red tape can drive you nuts. That's why it pays to have friends in Albany and Washington who can help out.
Johnny: I wanted to discuss this matter with Skye personally.
Trevor: Oh --
Johnny: I thought you understood that.
Trevor: I'm sorry, John. It's not nice to keep a lady waiting and when I didn't hear from you, I thought you weren't coming.
Johnny: Yeah, something unexpected came up. I had to handle it personally.
Kate: Sonny wasn't trespassing, per se. I -- let him in.
Diane: Oh -- oh, you let him in? Well, maybe you need to take a moment, confer with your client and clarify her position since the shoe is now so obviously on the other foot -- well, so to speak. Maybe it's time for me to get a keep-away order served on Kate.
Alexis: Ah, do whatever you want, but I do have an enforceable order that your client seems to be disregarding, so I'm going to have to take it to the next level and get a restraining order and that way, if he comes over again, he'll be in really big trouble.
Diane: Well, I wouldn't say that that's a shoo-in. Kate has created a hazard to Sonny's health and well-being.
Alexis: Oh, that's absurd.
Diane: By refusing to implement proper security measures, she has made this property a dangerous nuisance.
Alexis: Did you just make that up?
Diane: Does it sound like I made it up?
Alexis: Yes, that's not a law.
Diane: Well, it would to you.
Alexis: It's stupid. He's trespassing.
Sonny: Okay, you know what? I'm out of here.
Kate: Sonny, that's not necessary, you don't --
Sonny: No, itís. It's okay.
Diane: It is so unfortunate that you felt compelled to involve this woman in a minor dispute that could so easily have been handled between you and Sonny. It's going to make things incredibly difficult, not to mention very expensive. Oh, well. Guess we'll just have to wait for the other shoe to drop.
Alexis: Her threats -- empty. You don't have to give in to any of those. I just want you to know that I can win this if you want me to. And that way, you can get Sonny to stop controlling your life for good.
Luke: Wife, it's me. Me -- I'm the guy who never quits if it matters, and if you think that my own life doesn't fit that category, you don't know me as well as I thought you did.
Tracy: Maybe I don't, because lately, you are an enigma.
Luke: I don't believe in that lovely little fantasy of angels and afterlife and in the sky with the bearded old man. I believe that this world is all we get, and I'm okay with that. I have no complaints. I love my life. For the first time in a long, long time, I'm not anxious to give that up. And I'm not anxious to set you free on an unsuspecting world as the merry widow.
Tracy: So, you have beaten odds that would've flattened other men and you've done it with strength and will and courage. I need you to harness those and focus on survival. And I want you to do it for me, because you make my life worth living, and I don't know what I'd do without you.
Luke: I'm happy to oblige.
Luke: The only thing I won't do is stop living my life my way.
Tracy: That was record time -- congratulations! You made it back to square one in record time -- why do I bother? Why do I bother? Why do I bother?
Lucky: Anything you can remember about this guy can be helpful.
Mac: Yeah, even if it doesn't seem important.
Georgie: I've told you everything.
Mac: All right, look -- try a general description.
Georgie: I don't know -- he was medium, medium height, medium build. Brownish hair, I think, but -- black. He was definitely wearing black.
Mac: Okay, good, good. That's a start.
Georgie: I think he sent me a text message.
Mac: What do you mean?
Georgie: Well, I got a message earlier today and it said "Seen your sis?" I didn't think anything of it when I got it, but maybe it was -- it was a warning that someone was coming after Maxie.
["Carol of the Bells" plays]
Johnny: I assume Trevor told you that I've recently taken over my father's business enterprises.
Skye: Congratulations. How nice for you.
Trevor: We'll see. John's eager and that's good, but he's inexperienced. Fortunately, he's got me to teach him the ropes -- right, Johnny?
Johnny: I'm interested in acquiring Lorenzo Alcazar's waterfront holdings.
Skye: So I understand.
Trevor: It is a complex negotiation, but I'd be happy to show you how to simplify it.
Skye: You know what? It doesn't matter. Even if I could, I'm not really ready to sell any of Lorenzoís assets at this time.
Johnny: You haven't really had enough time to make an informed decision. I hope you go home and reconsider.
Det. Harper: This is the statement you gave on the night of Emily's death. I'd like to go over it.
Jason: I got nothing to add to that.
Det. Harper: I'm hoping you'll think of something that possibly escaped your attention on the night in question, being understandably in shock and all.
Jason: Is Diane on her way?
Det. Harper: Probably, but I'd like to take a stab at this anyway. It's starting to appear less likely that Anthony Zacchara killed your sister, which means whoever murdered Emily and possibly Leticia Juarez is still at large. Now, you're obviously a trained observer -- you were first on both scenes. Did you see anything to indicate another suspect, any signature you might have recognized that might point the finger at someone we haven't considered?
Diane: Unless you are planning on arresting my client, I have come to take him home.
Det. Harper: Just asking a few questions.
Diane: Oh, yeah? Well -- well, you'll pardon my skepticism, but this department has a well-established history of harassing Mr. Morgan any time you can't solve a case.
Det. Harper: Mr. Morgan's rights have not been violated. But Emily had rights, too, and if her brother knows anything that can help us catch her killer, he needs to speak up.
Cassius: Hey, hey, hey, hey. It's okay, it's cool.
Cassius: Nurse Johnson pulled E.R. duty. She has no idea you're late.
Kate: Oh --
Kate: Oh, thank God. She's -- she's a stickler for punctuality.
Cassius: She's a stickler for everything.
Kate: Is she as hard on you as she is on me?
Cassius: Please -- she's harder, like for some reason she expects something of me. I just don't know what it is yet.
Kate: Hmm, maybe you represent a do-over.
Cassius: Hmm -- pardon?
Kate: From what I understand, Epiphany -- Nurse Johnson -- has somewhat of a volatile relationship with her son, something about unmet expectations?
Cassius: Oh, on her part or his?
Kate: Um -- both, I think. I think he -- he wanted her to accept him at face value and she wanted him to be a doctor.
Cassius: Hmm. That's interesting because, well, what does he do?
Kate: Some sort of computer whiz. He used to work for my boyf-- a friend.
Cassius: That's a shame. Yeah, I figured you would get attached, though, so --
Kate: Are you flirting with me?
Cassius: What -- me? Well, maybe just -- just a little bit, just a little bit.
Kate: It wouldn't be because I used to work for "Couture," you know, editor in chief thing?
Cassius: "Couture"? What is -- what -- what, the fashion rag?
Cassius: What does that have to do with me?
Kate: Well, you're -- you're handsome.
Cassius: I'm blushing. Um -- I'm not a model. I'm -- I'm a singer.
Kate: You any good?
Cassius: You better believe it. You see, I have some expectations of my own to live up to, so -- we'll talk.
Jerry: Have you given any more thought to my warning?
Sonny: How you doing, Luke?
Luke: Well, you know -- did you see my wife out there?
Sonny: No, no.
Luke: We're in this big argument about what constitutes my fight for life.
Sonny: Is that -- is that what this is?
Luke: That's what they tell me.
Luke: Oh, you know, I've lived my life my own way for so long, lived by my own rules since I was, like, 8 years old, man. And now, I'm supposed to change. I'm supposed to turn into some other guy, some buttoned-down old geezer who's cautious and afraid. I -- I don't want this operation if that's what's going to happen. Whole damn thing's crazy anyway. I'm supposed to die from a gunshot wound or getting cracked over the head with a blunt object, not -- not my damn heart giving out. I never saw this coming, pal. And my wife wants me to fight with everything I got. She doesn't want to lose me. It's just not -- not that simple for me.
Sonny: Are you saying you want to refuse the bypass?
Luke: I don't want to die -- want to live. But I want to "live." I won't be one of those pathetic old bastards who is only alive because he's too terrified of death to die. I won't be that.
Sonny: I've almost died many times, always from something external, like you said. A bullet, a knife -- whatever. But the truth is an operating table is an operating table. It's a crap shoot. You can survive the surgery, and then the anesthesia will kill you.
Luke: You kidding me? The food here will kill you.
Sonny: But the battle's just the same, just like Tracy said. She's right. It's clear. You know, you -- you fight to live, or you choose to die.
Luke: Sometimes life can be death. If these doctors have their way, I have to change who I am to survive.
Sonny: Yeah, but you can change your lifestyle. That doesn't necessarily mean it's going to change your core, you know?
Luke: Oh, it changes enough, and you know it.
Luke: I just -- I won't be some old, decrepit -- some guy who just hangs on while my wife hovers around me watching my every breath. That's not fair to Tracy. She didn't sign on for that. I'd rather be a memory.
Tracy: Sonny --
Sonny: Hey. How you doing?
Tracy: Can I have a moment with my husband?
Sonny: Yeah. I get where you're coming from. But you know, whatever it takes, I want you around.
Tracy: Sometimes it's the only way to hear the truth.
Jerry: I tried to warn you at that hellish ball. You will live longer if you choose a life that doesn't include Sonny. I mean, you must be seeing the signs. A mob war is about to break out between the Zacchara and Corinthos clans. It's about to break out anytime soon. And since Carly and the children are being guarded around the clock, Sonny's most obvious vulnerability is you.
Kate: What has inspired this concern?
Jerry: When you see someone about to walk in front of an oncoming train, you try and give them a warning. Unless, of course, they ignore it. But at least I did my part.
Sonny: What are you doing talking to him?
Kate: What? Nothing.
Sonny: "Nothing"? That -- it seemed like more than nothing to me.
Kate: You know, I was late, and -- and now, I'm wasting time, and I -- I need to go.
Diane: These repeated interrogations do not bode well. I think the police want to pin both Leticiaís and Emily's murders on you.
Jason: Harper says they're looking for something to tie the crimes together.
Diane: You were first on the scene in both cases.
Jason: I mean, there's a pattern here, Diane. I just can't -- I just can't see it yet.
Det. Harper: We just got word from the commissioner. Maxie Jones was nearly strangled to death with a phone cord. Now, the M.O. was virtually identical to that of Leticia, except that Maxie's sister, Georgie, walked in before Maxie died. Now, I'm asking you again in the presence of your attorney. Do you have any idea what Leticia, Emily, Carly, and Maxie have in common?
["In Excelsis Deo" plays]
Johnny: So you're not ready to sell Alcazar's properties? That's not what I wanted to hear, but I'll accept it for now. But if Sonny Corinthos magically ends up in control of those piers, there's going to be trouble. I'd hate to see you caught in the middle.
Skye: Was that a threat?
Johnny: Consider our offer on the table.
Trevor: John is not always prudent. But you have my word, you're in no danger.
Skye: Why, because you can control Johnny as well as you controlled Anthony? This meeting's over.
Ric: Skye, wait.
Skye: You know, I'm in a hurry.
Ric: What was that all about?
Trevor: Huh. Ric, it doesn't concern you.
Ric: Skye seemed a little distressed. That concerns me.
Trevor: So get over it. And her. I'm sure that she will. Is there anything else?
Ric: Yeah, I've been thinking about your suggestion -- about targeting Anthony Zacchara for Emily's murder? I think you're covering for somebody, and my money's on Johnny. What do you think?
Trevor: I don't think we want to have this conversation.
Ric: Yeah, I knew you wouldn't admit to it, but let me give you a warning, Dad. I won't let you or Johnny Zacchara add Skye's name to that list. You take that seriously.
Luke: Hey. When did you get here?
Lucky: A few minutes ago. Working a case, so I can't stay. I just wanted to talk to you.
Luke: Well, if you're working up to list all the reasons why I should stay on the planet and fight for my life, save your breath.
Lucky: Dad, that bypass will save your life.
Luke: Yeah, that's what they say. I don't expect you to understand, son. You're young and you're strong, and your body has never betrayed you.
Lucky: Sure it has. I'm a recovering drug addict, remember?
Luke: Well, that's not the same.
Lucky: Well, it is if you think about it. I mean, my body -- it was dependent on something that other people could resist, so -- it came with a sense of failure and shame.
Luke: I never thought of it like that.
Lucky: Well, see? Then I know you better than you think.
Luke: Okay, Sonny boy. Give your old man some sage advice.
Lucky: Huh, I -- well, I can only speak about what I've learned. When you speak about your own disappointment and your own limitations by pushing your body to more extremes, you made a conscious decision to -- to throw away your own life.
Johnny: This is getting old. You're going to try this once too often and get your head blown off.
Jason: I wouldn't have to keep coming back if you told me what you know about the murders.
Johnny: I didn't know anything the first hundred times you asked. Still donít.
Jason: Look, I don't know if you're covering for somebody. But if you are, it needs to stop, because the killer struck again.
Johnny: Is somebody dead?
Jason: She would be if her sister hadn't come home.
Johnny: Anybody I know?
Jason: Maxie Jones.
["Deck the Halls" plays]
Alexis: It's good that we came to a truce. You don't kiss me, I won't slap you. Now, the only way that I'll agree to have dinner with you is if you don't pay for me.
Jerry: Oh, well, I insist, darling.
Alexis: Either we split the check, or I'm leaving right now.
Jerry: Oh, no, no, no, no. A gentleman never lets a lady pay.
Alexis: Did you miss the entire women's movement?
Jerry: Yes, thank God I did. It was a total waste of time.
Alexis: Of course you would say that, because you're a Neanderthal.
Jerry: Oh -- I just simply like my women with a little residual dependence.
Alexis: Then perhaps you should be having dinner with one of them.
Jerry: If I agree to your ridiculous check splitting, will you stay?
Alexis: Maybe. As long as you don't think for a minute that this will end up with a nightcap in your room.
Jerry: Oh, I'm just fascinated with your thinking that far ahead. All this is, is a simple invitation to dinner to thank you for your assistance with helping the poor, overserved Leyla.
Alexis: Who you had no problem taking advantage of. Probably because she was so young that she didn't understand the results or the effects of alcohol. But you know what? It's really not my concern. You can pick up all the inebriated children that you want. It's none of my business.
Jerry: You are a terrible liar. You know that. You care a great deal more than you're comfortable with. I love it.
[Knock on door]
Sonny: Here, let me help you with that. I -- I got a confession to make.
Kate: Hmm. Well, I hear it's good for the soul.
Sonny: Uh -- I've been -- I've been -- I'm sorry. I've been waiting out in the car for you to pull up.
Kate: Hmm. That's a clear and flagrant violation of Alexis' court order.
Sonny: You going to tell on me?
Kate: You shouldn't be here.
Sonny: You going to call your lawyer?
Kate: Well, I should. That's how civilized people handle disagreements.
Sonny: Can you just admit one thing, please? Can you just admit that you miss me as much as I miss you?
Sonny: You're -- you're -- you know, you're real good at the back-and-forth stuff. But me, you know, my heart is on the line here. I -- I -- I really want to be with you, but I'm not going to climb over two rabid lawyers to do it.
Kate: Mm-hmm. You want. You don't want.
Sonny: What -- what do you mean, I want, I don't want?
Kate: Well, no, when do my -- when do my interests come up? When -- when do my needs matter?
Sonny: What --
Kate: Never, Sonny. That's why I had to insert a lawyer -- to protect my interests.
Sonny: But you're not a plaintiff, and I'm not a defendant.
Kate: Oh, well, that can be arranged.
Sonny: Okay, you see? This -- this is more than just guards and property lines and how much you hate my business. This is start-- this is starting to feel like the grown-up version of you leaving me on the street corner all night to wait for you. There you go. Anytime we start getting close, and I start thinking, you know, we could have a future, you run away, like you're doing now.
Kate: That's true, Sonny. You scare me to death.
Mac: Here, sit down. Look, I'm going to let Detective Harper question you, okay? He's more objective. But I'm right here.
Det. Harper: With all due respect, Commissioner, it might be better if you wait outside. Maxie might inadvertently edit herself to avoid upsetting you.
Maxie: It's okay. I'll be fine.
Mac: Okay. All right. I'll be outside.
Det. Harper: You ready?
Maxie: I really don't know what I could tell you. I mean, I -- I didn't even see his face.
Det. Harper: Well, maybe nothing, but we'll see. What time did you get home?
Maxie: Probably 2:00.
Det. Harper: Did you lock the door behind you?
Maxie: Um -- no. Um -- I just threw my purse down on the couch and headed for the stairs. He must have already been inside. I couldn't catch my breath. This darkness came over me, and -- I'm sorry -- um -- I'm sorry. I -- I can help you. I didn't -- I didn't see his face.
["Joy to the World" plays]
Mike: You know, honey, you've been through quite an ordeal. Why don't you take the night off?
Georgie: No, no. I don't want to be at home watching the forensics team go through our house again, or watching Detective Harper interrogate Maxie about --
Mike: All right, all right, as long as you're sure. You know, sometimes it helps to keep busy. But if it gets to be too much, just say "ouch," okay?
Georgie: Where have you been?
Coop: Running errands, why?
Georgie: You haven't been at the station?
Coop: No, not since this morning. What's going on?
Georgie: Someone broke into our house and tried to strangle Maxie.
Jason: The attack on Maxie mirrors the attacks on Leticia, Emily, and Carly.
Johnny: Is Maxie all right?
Jason: I just know that she's alive. And so far, you're the only person who had a look at the attacker.
Johnny: I already told you and the cops, when I came through the entranceway at Wyndemere, Carly was already on the ground, the guy was running away. I saw him from behind. He was wearing all black. That's all I know.
Jason: Tall, short? Bald, thin? Heavyset? Something here?
Johnny: About my height, medium build, brownish hair.
Lucky: Sorry, am I interrupting mob business?
Johnny: What are you doing walking in my house?
Lucky: I'm taking you in for questioning.
Lucky: About the assault on Maxie Jones.
Luke: Lucky was in. He had an interesting insight.
Tracy: Tell me.
Luke: He suggests that I'm angry with my body for giving out on me. That -- that's the root of wanting to push it to its limits. I --
Tracy: Well, that definitely sounds like you. But you can collect all the insight you want. If you don't put them to practical use, they're not going to do you a twit of good, so what's it going to be? Are you going to have the surgery, or has all this been a painful, prolonged preamble to you backing out?
Monica: Luke, we need to prep you for surgery.
Monica: Your vitals are dangerously unstable, and your EKG is erratic, and we cannot wait any longer. We need to have you do the bypass tonight.
>> On the next "General Hospital" --
Maxie: I remember something.
Georgie: How did you know about the text message?
Lulu: My dad needs an operation tonight.
Monica: We're running out of time.
Luke: I'll be back.
Epiphany: We're losing the patient!
