Courtney: I mean, did Emily -- did she say how the miscarriage happened?

Nikolas: No, no, just that it had. We need to get back. Hi, this is Nikolas Cassadine. There's been an emergency at home and I need to check out in a half an hour. All right, thank you. What's wrong?

Courtney: Nikolas, I can't do it. I can't go back.

Elizabeth: Why aren't you saying anything? What happened? The baby's ok, right?

Jax: Elizabeth, I'm sorry --

Elizabeth: Ok, you're really scaring me. Will one of you please just tell me what's going on?

Lucky: The baby's gone.

Sonny: I know I can't let Carly run around, you know, causing accidents where people get hurt or end up dead, but then again, I don't know how to take that next step to locking her up.

Emily: Ok, I called Nikolas and I told him about the miscarriage. I'm sure he'll tell Courtney.

Sonny: You ok?

Emily: It's not about me tonight.

Sonny: You got something to say to me?

Emily: You sure you want to hear it?

Sonny: Well, I'm asking.

Emily: All right. Carly caused the accident that led to Elizabeth losing the baby.

Sonny: She didn't mean to do it.

Emily: But she did, Sonny. She's out of control, yours or hers. You have to know that now. You no longer have a choice. You've got to have Carly committed.

Carly: Sonny? Oh, God. Anybody? Oh, God. Ah!

Elizabeth: Jax, I'm sorry.

Jax: Yeah, me, too.

Elizabeth: I shouldn't have gone home. I should've stayed in the hospital. I'm sure that's what caused all of this.

Jax: No, Elizabeth, Elizabeth? This is not your fault.

Lucky: Listen to him. He's telling the truth.

Dr. Meadows: Elizabeth, I am so sorry. And if it helps at all, no effort was spared in treating you.

Elizabeth: I know. I know.

Dr. Meadows: I have to take you for a D&C now.

Lucky: Already? Elizabeth just lost her baby. Can you give her some time?

Dr. Meadows: I know, but the procedure has to be performed as quickly as possible --

Elizabeth: That's ok, let's just --

Dr. Meadows: To reduce blood loss.

Elizabeth: Just get it over with, ok?

Dr. Meadows: All right.

Lucky: All right, I'll be right here for you when you get back.

Courtney: I know what it feels like to lose a child, ok, and right now Elizabeth is just one big raw nerve and she's probably questioning every choice she has ever made, and the last person she needs to deal with right now is me. I'm sure that Jax and Elizabeth would appreciate me keeping my distance more than anything. Maybe it's the only way I can honor the baby.

Nikolas: All right. I mean, from your point of view, that makes sense. And I really don't want to leave you here alone, but --

Courtney: No, no, no --

Nikolas: I have to go back.

Courtney: Hey, hey, it's not necessary to explain, really. I mean, your place is with Elizabeth and Lucky and Emily. You have to go.

Javier: Get the job done, and get it right.

Carly: Get out of here! Get out of here! Go! Go back to -- go back to hell! You're not going to get my children! No! Go! Get out! Get out of here! You'll never get my --

Max: Carly, Carly, what's going on?

Carly: Max, the terrace, the terrace! Hurry!

Max: Carly, I don't know what you think you saw, but there's no one out here.

Sonny: I feel terrible for Elizabeth. Losing a baby before it's even born is the worst thing that can happen. But locking Carly up is not going to bring the baby back. Carly's gotten so much better after the accident. She's calming down, all right? She knows she can't act out like that again. She's going to stay put.

Reese: Are you sure you can trust her with that? Even with the best of intentions, she's not exactly in control.

Emily: I agree with Reese.

Sonny: I -- I realize how difficult this is for you. Your best friends just lost a baby they built their entire future around and you got people screaming to God trying to find the answers, and you know the truth and you're not saying anything. Unless you've decided to change your mind on that?

Emily: I won't tell anyone that Carly caused the accident. But you need to understand, if Carly’s behavior hurts anyone else I love or even someone I don't, all bets are off, ok? I'll have Carly committed if you won’t.

Sonny: Fair enough. I mean, you know what, it was Durant. He's the one who forced her into that street. I am making progress with her.

[Phone rings]

Sonny: Hello?

Max: Hey, you need to get home, and fast. Carly's flipping out. It's really bad.

Nikolas: When I first moved to Port Charles, I -- I didn't have any friends. I was the outsider, the dreaded Cassadine. Lucky was the one with all the friends, and they were loyal to him.

Courtney: Yeah, so -- so what flipped?

Nikolas: What flipped? I don't know, really. In retrospect, it seems like I all of a sudden just -- I was accepted and blessed with the three best friends that anyone could ever have.

Courtney: Yeah, the Four Musketeers, right? Yeah, I have been on the outside and looked in on your little clique plenty of times, you know, busing tables at Kelly’s. Seeing the four of you, it's like you're in your own little world, like you complete each other and you don't need anybody else.

Nikolas: It wasn't always harmonious like that. I mean, there were times where one of us was, you know, out of touch with the other one, but when it counted, we had each other's backs, and it counts now.

Courtney: Which is why you need to go. Piece of advice -- protect your heart.

Nikolas: What do you mean, protect my heart? From my friends, from my brother?

Courtney: It's just Lucky wasn't exactly thrilled with the way Emily got hurt, and they probably know that we've spent the last few days together.

Nikolas: Yeah.

Courtney: They might not want you around right now.

Nikolas: I know that. That's a chance that I'm going to have to take though, because if the situations were reversed, I'd want them with me.

Courtney: Including Emily?

Nikolas: Does that bother you?

Courtney: No. I mean, I envy the connection that you two have. You became friends before you were lovers. Maybe that's what it takes to survive the pain that couples inflict on each other. I never really got that until now.

Nikolas: What are you saying, exactly?

Courtney: I want to support you through this, and the others, too, if they'll let me. I do. I mean, I need to start facing my life however -- however it ends up, and I can't do that from here.

Nikolas: Ok. Ok. Then we'd better start packing. Wait, wait, come here. Thank you so much.

Emily: Is Elizabeth having the D&C?

Lucky: Yeah, she just left a few minutes ago.

Emily: Is it ok if I hang out? I want to be here when Elizabeth gets back.

Lucky: Yeah, it's what we both expect. You don't have to ask.

[Emily sighs]

Emily: How's she holding up?

Lucky: Like you would imagine. Elizabeth is devastated. I mean, after everything that happened with the pregnancy -- the confusion, the pressure, the fighting -- we made it this far. Everything about hope and the future, and now this.

Emily: Doesn't seem fair, does it?

Lucky: Yeah. The worst part is that Elizabeth is looking for ways to make the miscarriage her fault, like she did something wrong.

Emily: I think that's a normal reaction, you know, at least initially, but we all know that that isn't true, and it's up to us to make Elizabeth realize that it was an accident and that it's nothing that anyone did.

Jax: Yeah, except the guy who was driving the car.

[Knock on door]

Reese: There's a rumor that you're checking out.

Ric: Yeah.

Reese: Need a ride?

Ric: Yeah, you know what, not a moment too soon. I was just about to call a cab.

Reese: I'm sure you're pretty anxious about picking up your life where you left off.

Ric: Look, Reese, I want to help Sonny as much as I can through this whole war with Ruiz, you know? It means a lot that he's finally able to accept help from me. We got a shot at being real brothers here. It's something I've wanted for a long time. At the same time, my wife's not waiting for me at home.

Reese: I take it you haven't heard from Alexis?

Ric: Nope, not since the three of us argued.

Reese: No, that wasn't an argument. That was Alexis saying anything she could to drive a wedge between me, you, and Sonny.

Ric: Yeah.

Reese: And excuse me for being blunt here, but at times your wife acts like a selfish only child.

Ric: Yeah, at times. But she's very observant and she's anything but dumb, and that lie that she told Sonny about the two of us having an affair wasn't really.

Reese: We are not having an affair.

Ric: I think you're deliberately missing the point, Reese. We did sleep together. Ok, and Alexis may not be coupled with the fact that she's literally terrified for my life. I mean, the man she's about to have a child with is stepping between bullets and mob bosses. I mean, she has every right in the world to go off.

Reese: Congratulations. You managed to make me empathize with Alexis -- almost. Why don't you try harder to get her back?

Ric: You know, Alexis and I love each other. It's -- it's just the married part that we have a little bit of a problem with. It's just not right to stay together for the sake of a child, but how do I walk away from the family that I've always wanted?

Max: Hey, thanks for coming so fast.

Sonny: Yeah.

Max: Carly's going from calm to crazy, then back again.

Sonny: You said she saw something outside?

Max: Yeah, I'll let her tell you.

Sonny: All right.

Carly: Oh. Oh, God, Sonny. I've been so scared.

Sonny: Hey, there's no reason to be scared. Listen, I got the guards double-checking everything. You're going to be all right.

Carly: She's after the children.

Sonny: Who?

Carly: Faith. She's come back to finish what she started.

Ric: So Carly just ran out into traffic?

Reese: Evidently, Durant scared her. So Sonny brings Carly home, she doesn't remember any of it.

Ric: Jeez.

Reese: We're all waiting for news about Elizabeth’s condition and, well, we finally come here and that's when we found out that Elizabeth lost the baby. And I'm worried, Ric. I'm so worried about Sonny because while he's immersed in dealing with Carly’s breakdown, Javier Ruiz is waiting in the wings for revenge.

Ric: Yeah.

Reese: And Sonny is just feeling partly responsible now for the death of an unborn child. And you know what? You can stop me anytime I'm being insensitive. Elizabeth's miscarriage. I'm sure that has some resonance for you.

Ric: No, no, it's ok, it's all right. I mean, the truth is that Elizabeth and I would probably be together if she hadn't lost our baby, but -- but I don't know, it shook us to the core and, for whatever reason, we weren't able to share our grief, or at least I wasn’t. Instead, I took Carly, I plotted to take -- take her child. When I allow myself to think about it, I -- I can't believe my brother actually can get past it.

Reese: Oh. So that's why you've been so noncommittal about Sonny not putting Carly in a mental hospital. You feel so guilty about what you did in the past that you just didn't want to tell Sonny how to deal with Carly.

Ric: You know what, if Carly is running out into traffic and she's causing accidents, she does need to be committed, but I can't be the one to tell Sonny that.

Reese: Neither can I. He just needs time, Ric, to come to this realization on his own.

Ric: Yeah, well, Javier Ruiz isn't going to allow him that luxury. He's here for a reason. And if Sonny's too preoccupied with Carly to watch his own back, then it's up to you and me to watch it for him.

Man: Done.

Javier: Any problems?

Man: Not one.

Javier: Good. Let's get out of here.

Jax: Sorry. Didn't mean to leave like that.

Lucky: You're entitled.

Emily: No need to apologize.

Lucky: Hey, are you all right? I mean, are you in any pain?

Elizabeth: Just empty.

Jax: Hey, is there anything at all I can do?

Elizabeth: Money won't fix this, Jax. I'm sorry.

Jax: No, no, it's -- it's ok. Really, it's fine.  Dr. Meadows.

Dr. Meadows: The procedure was normal.

Elizabeth: Was it the car accident or did I leave the hospital too soon?

Lucky: Elizabeth, stop.

Elizabeth: I need to know.

Dr. Meadows: There's no way to give you a definitive answer. It could be either of those or both, or another reason entirely. I know this is difficult, but I strongly advise you not to dwell on the whys. It'll just add to your heartache.

Sonny: Drink some tea. It'll make you feel better.

Carly: No, I don't -- I don't need any tea. I need you to go out there and find Faith and make sure she doesn't kidnap our children again.

Sonny: Faith Rosco’s dead, Carly. You didn't see her on the terrace.

Carly: Sonny, Sonny, I saw her.

Sonny: You don't remember?

Carly: I don't remember what?

Sonny: That we -- she was shot in the courthouse and we were both in E.R. when she died?

Carly: Yeah, well, you know, life would be a lot easier and great and nice if dead people actually stayed that way, but unfortunately it doesn't always happen. Look at Charlotte or Reese or whatever it is you want to call her.

Sonny: Well, that's different because you didn't watch Charlotte take her last breath. I was in the same cubicle as Faith, and I'm telling you I watched her die! You didn't see Faith tonight. Our kids are safe. We're all safe. I promise you.

Carly: Ok. I believe you.

Sonny: Now, will you humor me, drink some tea?

Max: Sonny.

Sonny: Be right back, ok? Did you find anything?

Max: Footprints. Carly was right. Someone was here.

Elizabeth: Hey.

Ric: Oh. Sorry, I -- I didn't mean to wake you.

Elizabeth: That's ok. I wasn't really sleeping. How long have you been here?

Ric: Just now. Lucky said I could -- I could check on you.

Elizabeth: I'm glad you did.

Ric: Yeah, I don't know if you mean that. I sure don't deserve it. Look, I don't -- I don't want to keep you from getting the rest that you obviously need. I just -- I just wanted to tell you how profoundly sorry I am. That this should happen to you again is just unspeakable. Anyway, please, if there's anything that you or Lucky need, you just -- you just let me know, ok?

Elizabeth: Ric? I'm a mess right now. I'm in pain, I'm angry, empty. I never wanted to feel this way again. But it means the world to me that you cared then and that you care now.

Ric: You're one of the best, Elizabeth. I've always known that, no matter what.  She's awake.

Lucky: Thank you.

Ric: Yeah. Lucky? Um, listen, do me a favor. Be everything to Elizabeth that I couldn’t. Love and support her through the pain, but most of all give her the time that she needs to heal. Might take longer and be harder than you think.

Lucky: I'll remember.  Hey, I was about to go in, unless you want a private minute alone with her.

Jax: No, that's ok. Why would Elizabeth want to talk to the person who caused this? Why would she ever want to speak to me again?

Lucky: I'm so sorry.

Elizabeth: I just don't understand. Things were finally on track. Everybody was on the same page. Why do things like this have to happen?

Lucky: I don't know.

Elizabeth: I really loved this baby. I didn't even know if it was a boy or a girl.

Lucky: You know what I think? I think you do.

Elizabeth: Yeah. In my heart, it was a girl.

Emily: Listen to me, Jax. You swerved your car to avoid hitting a pedestrian. It was an accident. You have to stop blaming yourself for Elizabeth’s miscarriage.

Jax: The only person that's more responsible is the person that jumped out in front of my car. I'm going to find them. And when I do, I'm going to make it my daily mission to make them pay for killing my child.

Emily: There's no point, Jax.

Jax: I'm sorry, no point?

Emily: Whoever it was couldn't have meant any harm.

Jax: Then why didn't they stick around to face the consequences?

Emily: Who knows, maybe they were afraid or they were too out of it to realize that they'd caused any damage. What's done is done. How would punishing this person help or change what's happened?

Jax: It's cold comfort, you're right, but I'll take it.

[Emily sighs]

Elizabeth: I don't know what to do next. We can't have a funeral or a memorial service.

Lucky: Why not?

Elizabeth: Because they don't do that for miscarriages.

Lucky: Who's "they"? We can do whatever we want. If you want to have a ceremony of some kind and that makes you feel better, I say let's plan it. But for now, you need to rest.

Emily: Hey. Someone's here to see you.

Elizabeth: Em, I'm not in the mood for visitors.

Nikolas: I'm sorry. What can I do?

Elizabeth: You're here. It's already done.

Max: There were signs of distress along the property line. Someone was walking the perimeter, looking for a way in.

Sonny: Javier Ruiz or somebody who works for him. I've been expecting this. Did you see any --?

Max: No.

Sonny: Anywhere they broke in?

Max: No. You know, I don't like this. You doubled up the guards. How could anyone have gotten on the property?

Sonny: Well, that's what we got to find out. Keep looking.

Max: Ok.

Carly: Sonny? Max found Faith, didn't he?

Sonny: Not Faith. She's dead, Carly. There's guards. I doubled up the guards. You probably saw somebody walking on the terrace.

Carly: Oh. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, no, I'm sorry I got so confused. No, you're -- you're right. Faith is dead and gone. My family's safe.

Elizabeth: I can't believe this has happened again. I prayed this baby would be born. But as much as it hurts right now, I know it'd be so much worse if I didn't have all of you. You guys are everything to me. There was a time when I didn't think the four of us would ever be in the same room together, but here we are. We always come together when it really matters. I love you guys. And I know I can get through anything as long as you're here.

Emily: No one's going anywhere.

Lucky: You can count on that.

Nikolas: Yeah. You all are my family, no matter what.

Elizabeth: Thanks, guys.

Ric: Well, thanks for carting me home.

Reese: Yeah, I'm wondering if that was such a good idea. You just got out of the hospital. Should you be alone?

Ric: Well, I really don't have much of a choice. You know, the funny thing is that of all the people that I'm supposed to be bound to -- my wife, my brother -- the one person who actually shows up is you.

Reese: Well, you're a great guy, and I make no apologies for caring about you.

Ric: I appreciate that.

Carly: I feel so silly that I thought Faith was alive.

Sonny: Well, I'm glad that you finally realize that.

Carly: I'm so sorry that I put you through that.

Sonny: It's what I'm here for.

Carly: I -- thank you so much for taking me down to the guesthouse. It meant so much to me to see the boys sleeping. It just amazes me how you always know the exact thing that soothes my soul.

Sonny: Can I -- can I tell you a secret? I'm a magician.

Carly: Well, yeah. Well, with me you are.

Sonny: I could understand why you're scared. You know, Faith Rosco’s an evil bitch who stole our sons, a murdering psycho who planted herself in our lives and would not go away. So you probably have a little bit of residual fear there and, you know, fear sometimes plays tricks on you. Right? But I just want you to know -- this is very important -- Faith Rosco can never hurt you or our sons ever again.

Carly: I trust you with my life, Sonny. I love you so much. You know how important family is to me. And no matter what happens to us as a couple, I know that I can sleep easy because you'll never separate me from my kids.

Courtney: Excuse me.

Nurse: Hi.

Courtney: Hi, I'm Courtney Matthews. Is Dr. Meadows available?

Nurse: Do you have an appointment?

Courtney: Look, the surrogate to my baby, Elizabeth Webber -- she had a miscarriage and I just -- I don't want to bother her fiancé. I just really need to know what happened.

Jax: I'll tell you.

Lucky: I'm perfectly capable of carrying the blankets back.

Nikolas: I know. I just thought you might need to vent a little bit.

Lucky: No, now's not the time.

Nikolas: Well, I know, I'm sorry. I know you're feeling the loss, too. You were invested in that baby.

Lucky: I hated the idea -- Elizabeth being pregnant with anybody else's baby but mine. But it started to make sense. You know, it penetrated my thick head that that baby was a part of the woman that I love. That was enough for me to love it. I wanted the chance to be this baby's father. But now she's gone.

Elizabeth: This has been one of the worst nights of my life. I'm just going to try to focus on my blessings. I have Lucky's love, you and Nikolas to support me. And I have a beautiful, healthy baby boy waiting for me at home.

Emily: We're all very fortunate to have each other.

Elizabeth: Yeah. Yeah, we are. What about Jax? Who's going to help him through this?

Jax: Elizabeth and I had just signed the joint custody agreement, and I -- I gave her a baby rattle to mark the occasion. She really liked it. It was a happy moment. Anyway, I ran into Elizabeth again after my meeting and she -- she just told me that Lucky has planned a surprise wedding for them in the park, but they couldn't finish it because he got called away. So I offered to take her out for a sundae. And we talked about the child and its future, talked about my father. I offered her a ride home. She didn't want to listen to classical music, so she changed the station she wanted to listen to rock 'n' roll. And we were laughing, you know, we were having a good time, and I looked away for a split second. That's all it took. You know, I never really understood before when you told me about your miscarriage, wishing that you could take back that one fateful second so you could -- you know, you could make it a different choice. What if I -- what if I made a different choice? I mean, maybe -- maybe my baby would still be alive.

Courtney: Hey, come here.

Carly: Stay away from my children. Stay away from my children.

[Rapping on window]

Sonny: Your brother came into my town, into my house, and now he's in a coma for his trouble. Manny underestimated me. And I'm just going to warn you not to make the same miscalculation. Because if you don't walk away, I will send you home in a body bag.

Javier: What would you do in my shoes, if it was your brother who'd been set up and shot? We both know the answer. You would avenge him. So prepare yourself.

Ric: Well, I got to get my rest and you need to get back to Sonny.

Reese: Ok, I'll call you tomorrow, see how you're doing.

Ric: Ok. Night.

Reese: Night.

Ric: Thanks.

Reese: Ric!

>> On the next "General Hospital" --

Mac: I got a warrant to search your room.

Dillon: What, what are you looking for?

Jason: Were we always this intense?

Sam: Is it too much?

John: A gas leak in your apartment?

Ric: Does it mention anywhere in there about how Javier Ruiz wants me dead?

Sonny: Track down Ric and Reese. Javier will be dealt with tonight.
