Alexis: Before I came here to ask you to make this enormous sacrifice; I had to be certain that if the situation were reversed, if it were Kristina who were dying and had to give up her stem cells, I would do it, I would give you my permission.
Sonny: You saying the same thing about inducing labor? That you'd risk Kristina for another child's life? I don't buy that one second. You wouldn't take a 10% risk. You wouldn't sacrifice a hair on your daughter's head to save another child. Don't stand there and lie to my face about what you would do. My daughter's dead. Now, get out of here because I want to grieve for my daughter.
Alexis: Your other daughter will die if she doesn't get the stem cells. This is it. There's no more time. You say you love her? Prove it. Let her live.
Jason: I don't know if -- if you know. You know, if somehow you felt her spirit leave, or that you were dreaming she was born safe. You can't die, Sam. You have to live because she'd want that. She would want her mother --
[Monitor alarm beeps]
Jason: No, no, Sam. No, Sam, don't do this. Sam! Sam needs help. Something's wrong with her.
Sonny: What happened?
Alexis: Sonny --
Sonny: What happened?
Jason: I don't know, her blood pressure's dropping.
Alexis: Sonny, you've got --
Carly: Alexis, just give it a rest right now.
Alexis: If I rest, Kristina dies. You have got to give me permission, Sonny. If you don't, you're going to kill her.
Jason: Sonny isn't killing Kristina, Alexis. She's got a blood disease. She's very sick, but nobody's killing her. Nobody's screaming to take her stem cells without even caring that she was ever alive!
Alexis: You don't think I care about that baby? What happened to Samís baby is horrible! Why do you think Iím doing everything that I can to save the life of my own? Even Sam understood that! As frightened as she was, she agreed to induce labor! You heard her! You were standing right there!
Jason: All I heard was you yelling and her screaming for help because something was wrong with her baby!
Ric: Listen to me, it doesn't matter! It doesn't matter what happened! It doesn't matter who's guilty, all right? We're all guilty here! We've all lied! We've all tried to tear each other apart! What it comes down to is this -- Kristinaís life! She's your daughter, Sonny, and she needs your help! You need to sign those damn papers and let the doctors save her life.
Courtney: Don't open a bottle, Jax. We're leaving.
Jax: Too late.
Courtney: Well, most of it's just going to go to waste.
Jax: It's not going to go to waste. Besides, you should drink up, because you're going to need it.
Courtney: Great. Ok, well, if this thing is so terrible, then why did you ask me to go?
Jax: So it won't be so terrible for me.
Jax: You see, while a bunch of boring, pretentious people try to explain to me why I should, you know, contribute more money to the Opera Guild, I'll just be looking at you.
Courtney: Or you could just skip the function and send a check.
Jax: I haven't told you the best part -- live music. It's a full orchestra. We can waltz until dawn.
Courtney: Waltz? That's funny.
Jax: Don't tell me you've never waltzed.
Courtney: Ahem. I've been dancing.
Jax: It's not the same. It isn't the same thing as waltzing.
Courtney: Well, what, it's easy, right? It's, what, like a box step or something? What, it's like --
Courtney: One, two, three, or something like that? What?
Jax: This is going to take a little work.
Courtney: What, are you saying I can't dance? That's nice.
Jax: Come here.
Courtney: That's lovely.
Jax: When it is done correctly --
Jax: It is just like flying. Ready?
Jax: Hold on tight.
Jax: Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Courtney: All right.
Jax: Ready? Spin.
Courtney: Ok. Hey. You're pretty good.
Brook Lynn: Hey, Elizabeth?
Brook Lynn: Hi.
Brook Lynn: How's Kristina doing?
Elizabeth: Um --
Brook Lynn: Or, actually, is it ok if I just go visit her?
Elizabeth: Oh, you know what; she's not going so well, so they're limiting visitors to only family. I'm sorry.
Brook Lynn: Oh, it's ok because I'm her sister.
Elizabeth: No one told you?
Brook Lynn: No one told me what?
Elizabeth: Your dad is not Kristinaís father.
Sonny: No, back off, Ric. You need to take Alexis. I need time to think.
Alexis: Sonny, there isn't time.
Sonny: I need time to think about what Iím going to do here. Do you understand that Sam could die? Do you have any sympathy about that?
Alexis: She doesn't have any time.
Sonny: I know what she doesn't have! I know all your arguments!
Carly: Ok, Ric --
Sonny: But I need time to think!
Carly: It's time to do something.
Ric: All right, let's go.
Alexis: She's getting weaker --
Ric: No, no, no, listen, we're going to stand over here.
Ric: We're going to stand over here and we're going to wait and we're going to trust Sonny to make the right decision.
Sonny: You know what has to be done, right?
Sonny: You know how they get the stem cells, right? They just cut the umbilical cord. They don't have to take anything from the baby.
Jason: Yeah, I know. Yeah, I know.
Sonny: All right. All right. Here comes the doctor.
Steven: Sam is stabilized. We're moving her to a bed in the I.C.U.
Sonny: How long is she going to be unconscious?
Steven: There's no way that we can predict that. She almost died so she could be awake in two hours, but it could be two days.
Alexis: Sonny, that's too much time to wait to ask her. You have to authorize the procedure now.
Sonny: I want you to use my daughter's stem cells for Kristina.
Alexis: Thank you for saving her life.
Courtney: Ok, you're making me dizzy.
Jax: That's the general idea.
Courtney: Hmm. I doubt they'll be doing any of that at the Opera Gala.
Jax: You know, on second thought, maybe we should send a check and just stay here.
Courtney: Yeah? No, uh-uh, not a chance. Now that I know how to waltz, I want to do it in a full ballroom with a live orchestra. You're right, it does kind of feel like flying.
Jax: You know, that reminds me of something. I have to get something before we get on the plane. I'll be right back.
Courtney: What? What's so important you have to go?
Jax: No, no, you'll see when I get back! Practice your steps, ok?
Courtney: Carly, hey.
Carly: Hey. Where are you?
Courtney: I'm -- Iím at Jaxís. We're about to fly to Manhattan for some opera party thing. What's going on? You don't sound good.
Carly: I think you should come to the hospital. I'm on the 10th floor.
Courtney: What happened?
Carly: Michael, Morgan, Sonny, Jason -- everyone's ok. It's just that I need to talk to you.
Jason: The doctor said that you came close to dying. I know how that feels. Everything starts to fade. The voices start to echo, and even the pain seems like it's coming from a long way off. I think your soul is deciding what to do. You know, sometimes there's no question your body can't go on for whatever reason and you die. But sometimes you get a choice to leave or to stay. Sam, I'm asking you to stay.
[Tap on door]
Elizabeth: Jason? I'm really sorry to bother you.
Jason: No, it's ok. It's ok. What do you need?
Elizabeth: Sonny is with Kristina, and since Sam is unconscious, I was told to ask you.
Jason: Ok. About what?
Elizabeth: The arrangements for the baby's burial.
Alexis: Hello, my big girl. They found a way to make you feel all better. They're going to give you something that makes you feel all well and you're going to be able to go out and run and play. Mommy had to do things that were very difficult, where other people got hurt, and I wish I didn't have to do that, but I did what I had to do to take care of you. You're my best girl, and I always will take care of you.
Sonny: How long till we know if this is going to work?
Steven: Kristina's starting a conditioning regimen to remove the damaged marrow, and the stem cells will be infused tomorrow through an intravenous procedure, and hopefully by next week we'll see a rise in her red and white blood cell count, which indicates that the stem cells have taken hold and are restoring her marrow.
Sonny: Anything else you need?
Steven: We'll get started right away.
Ric: You did the right thing.
Sonny: "Right" is a matter of opinion, Ric. Sam thought it was right when she refused to induce labor, and Alexis thought it was right when she screamed at her, until, you know, she suddenly changed her mind. There's not a lot that's right or wrong in this world. There's what you do, what you don't do.
Ric: Well, what you did was save Kristinaís life.
Sonny: We won't know that for a while.
Alexis: Are the papers signed?
Ric: Yeah. Dr. Webber said they could start the stem-cell infusion as early as tomorrow.
Alexis: Thank God. Thank you, Sonny.
Sonny: You're welcome. Now I want to see my daughter.
Alexis: The doctors have put Kristina on a conditioning regimen that compromises her immune system.
Sonny: I'm not dangerous to her, Alexis.
Alexis: That's not what I meant.
Sonny: You know what, I don't care what you did, why you did it, how you helped Kristina. It doesn't matter anymore. The only thing I care about is that's my child in there, my flesh and blood. Her little sister's dead, never got a chance to open her eyes or take a breath in this world. I never got a chance to be her father. But I damn well am going to be Kristinaís father. So all I need you to do is stay out of my way.
Alexis: I'm not going to do anything. I'm not going to fight you, not tonight. I'm just asking that you be careful with her because your grief could confuse her.
Sonny: I -- I'll be careful.
Ric: Come here.
Alexis: He blames me. They all blame me. They all think I wanted that poor baby to die. I just wanted Kristina to live.
Brook Lynn: Sonny Corinthos is Kristinaís father?
Ned: Sonny Corinthos is technically her father.
Brook Lynn: No.
Brook Lynn: You lied. You lied to me. I'm sorry, I don't understand. Why? Why did you lie? So you could come out looking like some -- some hero to some ex-girlfriend and start all over again with a new baby? Is that why?
Ned: What are you talk-- "start all over"?
Brook Lynn: I know.
Brook Lynn: I'm too much trouble. I always have been. That's why you let Mom take me back to Bensonhurst before I was born.
Ned: No. No, no, no, no, moving back to Brooklyn was your mother's choice. I tried to make her stay. I tried. You know it.
Brook Lynn: You didn't try hard enough! How many times did you come into the city, and you didn't even call me?
Ned: Sweetheart, you weren't even there most of the time.
Brook Lynn: You didn't even call me.
Ned: You weren't even there. You were out of the country, you were on tour, you were gone. I tried to set up a regular schedule --
Brook Lynn: No, you know what -- you know what? I don't mean anything to you, and I never will.
Ned: That's not true. You have to believe me --
Brook Lynn: It's true.
Ned: I always wanted to spend more time with you. You know that.
Brook Lynn: That's a lie.
Ned: I can't go back. We can't go back.
Brook Lynn: No, stop. Just stop.
Ned: Brook --
Brook Lynn: Stop. Look, it's too late. It's too late to be my daddy. And it's a job you never wanted anyway, so just stay out of my life now.
Ned: Brook --
Brook Lynn: No, I said stop it.
Carly: Hey. I'm so sorry. Thank you for coming. I'm sorry to pull you away from your evening.
Courtney: What happened?
Carly: Sam's baby was stillborn.
Carly: Yeah, the placenta pulled away from the uterine wall and the baby didn't get enough oxygen.
Courtney: Oh, my -- I don't --
Courtney: Oh, my God.
Carly: Sam almost died. She's in I.C.U. right now.
Courtney: Does Jason know?
Carly: He was there. Sam was in the hospital chapel when it happened, and then they took her and they rushed her to the O.R. They did a C-section, and Jason and I were in the hall together and we just kept waiting to hear the baby cry.
Courtney: Jason's with Sam?
Courtney: Oh, God.
Carly: She doesn't have anyone else, you know. And Sonny's focusing on Kristina right now. They couldn't find a donor, so they are taking stem cells from the baby's umbilical cord, and the doctors are hoping that that'll be a cure. And I just -- I thought you should know, and I wanted to tell you.
Courtney: God. I mean, I -- I was at Jasonís penthouse, you know, the morning of Morganís birthday party. I saw this -- this night-light in the shape of a globe that Jason bought for the baby. Oh, Carly, I mean, I was happy for him, you know? I mean, I knew that little girl was going to fill up his whole life. Well, I mean, do you need anything? A ride home?
Carly: No, I'm going to stay.
Courtney: Ok. I'd stay, too, if I thought that I could help, but --
Courtney: Sonny doesn't need me here, and I don't think Jason does either anymore.
Carly: Oh, God, I hate -- I hate how we've all been torn apart. I hate what's happened to us. You know, we all used to be so close. But I guess that all we can do is pray and hope that we don't lose each other completely and that a little bit of the love survives.
Courtney: I'm praying for the same thing.
Jason: Am -- am I supposed to sign something?
Elizabeth: Well, it's to release the body. I can call the mortuary and take care of that if it'd be easier for you.
Jason: Doesn't -- that's who -- you know what, Sonny and Sam are the parents, so they should be the ones who decide this. Can you just give me just a couple hours? I'll figure out what to do by then.
Elizabeth: Yeah. Yeah, of course, yeah.
Jason: Thank you.
Jason: When Sam wakes up, I don't how I'm going to tell her that the baby's gone.
Jax: Another 10 minutes, your present and I would've left without you. What's the matter?
Courtney: Carly called me from the hospital. Come sit with me.
Jax: It's not Kristina, is it?
Courtney: No. No.
Jax: I know that she was weak --
Courtney: No, Kristinaís fine. Actually, she has a chance to get better. They're going to do -- ahem -- a procedure that involves stem cells instead of a bone-marrow transplant.
Courtney: Jax, the stem cells are from Samís baby.
Jax: The baby's dead?
Alexis: Sonny's visiting Kristina.
Carly: I'm not surprised.
Alexis: I'm very glad the two of you are on speaking terms. If you want to go in there --
Carly: I am not going to run interference between you and Sonny.
Alexis: I know you hate me. I know everyone thinks that Iím despicable; I'm the vulture that demanded stem cells from a baby the minute it died. It's awful. I admit it. I could never have conceived that I would have to do anything like that. But I can tell you I think you would've done the same thing, too.
Carly: Yeah, I think you're right, I would. And I don't like you, Alexis, I don't, but it's not because of what you did tonight. You had no choice. Your child was fighting for her life, but she's going to be ok. She's going to live now because of Sonny's decision, and I'm happy for you. Really, I am -- so much that Iíve been sitting here and Iíve been praying to God that we can all come up with a way to do what's best for our children. And so Iím going to give you this. Sonny is a good father. He is a good father, and he would never do anything to hurt Kristina. So my advice to you is learn how to share. It's the best gift you're ever going to be able to give your kid.
Sonny: Remember the day I told you when we were looking at the babies through the window? All the babies were there in pink blankets, blue blankets, their little caps on? You know, I was thinking about my own baby that day, but, you know, I did not realize that I had another little girl standing right next to me. Something sad happened today. But you know what the good part about it is? The -- the thing that makes everything better is that you're going to be ok. You are going to be ok.
[Knock on door]
Sonny: I'll be right back, ok? Ok?
Sonny: How's Sam?
Jason: She hasn't woken up yet.
Jason: Uh, the hospital wants to know what to do with the baby's body.
Sonny: Well, you're going to have to -- we're going to have to wait for Sam, right?
Jason: You know, she shouldn't have to worry about decisions about the memorial.
Sonny: Well, I don't want to decide -- I -- I mean, you know, I don't want to think about my daughter, you know, being buried, you know, in the ground. Right?
Jax: You know, from the minute I found out that Sam was pregnant, I started thinking, "That baby is mine." You know, I wanted to be the best dad, show her the world. But even after I found out that she wasn't going to be my daughter, that baby still had a special place in my heart.
Courtney: I know. Ahem. She's the reason that we got together. Yeah, when you found out that Sonny was the baby's real father, you asked me to go to Monte Carlo. I only agreed to go because, well, in some way, you had lost a child, and I understood how that felt. I wanted to help distract you somehow.
Jax: Yeah, that's where it all began. You know, they say that a person's life can be measured by what good they leave behind. That baby saved Kristina. And in a way, she saved me, too, by turning my life around, leading me to you.
Sonny: They're going to do a procedure on Kristina tomorrow, and then in a week they'll know if it worked.
Jason: Ok, do you want to wait --
Jason: To do the memorial then?
Sonny: No, no, I don't -- can you tell the hospital, and can you do me a favor? Can you call Father Coates and tell him --
Jason: Yeah, yeah.
Sonny: To do the memorial?
Jason: I'll tell him.
Sonny: What am I doing? I'm asking -- you know, you lost a baby, too. I'm sorry. I mean, you should -- I shouldn't have to -- you took care of Sam --
Jason: No, no, Sonny, I want to do this.
Sonny: If that baby knew anybody else's voice but Samís, it was yours. For the little time that baby was alive, you gave her a home. You were like a father to her. And I fought you, and I'm sorry. But I'm thanking you now.
Jason: She -- she had a good life. She was wanted and loved, and now, maybe because of her, Kristina will live.
Carly: Hey. Is everything ok? Are you guys going to be able to do the transplant for Kristina?
Steven: Well, the initial procedure was successful. We took the stem cells and they've been tested and prepped, and we're going to do the infusion tomorrow.
Carly: Is it going to work?
Steven: Well --
Carly: I don't want you to give me a professional, detached answer. I just need you to tell me what you think.
Steven: I'm hopeful. This sort of stem-cell procedure has been effective in a lot of cases like Kristinaís. There are so many people who love her, and that counts for a lot more than you realize.
Carly: It sounds so simple -- love a child. Should be simple, right? Ugh. But we just make it so complicated. We get so concerned with what happened and who lied to who and who hurt who, and --
Carly: It's like me. I resented Sam so much for being pregnant with Sonny's child, his daughter. I resented that little girl because I wanted a little girl of my own. You ever wish you were just a better person?
Steven: Frequently, yeah.
Carly: We're not alive all that long, right? We should try and help each other out some more. And that's what you do every day.
Steven: Carly? You're so tired. Why don't you go home?
Carly: Because of Sonny. You know, he's still my husband, and I love him in this really weird, complicated, unbreakable way.
Carly: He's probably not going to need me, but I just -- I want to be here in case he does.
Steven: You're very generous. Maybe -- maybe you're a better person than you think.
Ric: You praying?
Alexis: I meant to. Actually, I'm just by myself, staring at the candles, trying to process everything. I believe I've already mentioned to you that I've never been very religious.
Ric: Yeah, one more thing that we have in common.
Alexis: I never believed much in miracles because I could always explain them away.
Alexis: But what are the odds, really, that Sonny could separate from Carly long enough to conceive a baby that was to be born right when Kristina was in need of her stem cells? That has to be providence, right? Proof of some heavenly design. That seems like a miracle. I mean, that happened to me. But my question is, then why is God so stingy?
Alexis: If she could save Kristina, why couldn't she save Sam? Certainly, Samís baby was just as prayed for as Kristina, and certainly loved just as much. So why did my baby get to live?
Ric: All I know is that I witnessed something profound today. Sonny gave his permission for the procedure. He was -- he was grief-stricken, he was angry, but somehow you got through to him. The stem cells may cure Kristina, but her mother saved her life. I think that's a miracle.
Jason: I spoke to Father Coates. They're going to have a memorial for the baby. They're going to pray for her and tell us that she's in heaven. She is, Sam. I know she is. I know she's ok. I just can't stop thinking about how she looked. You know, like she was sleeping, until I held her.
Sonny: For a long time, we hardly saw each other. Now, Iím -- I'm here every day. You're going to get tired of me. That's probably one thing you don't understand. You know, there's a lot of things I don't understand like why everybody who loves you wants something different. How am I supposed to forgive the people who say to me that I can't be part of your life? You're too little to know what life means to be alive. It's not just breathing in and out. It's what -- it's what you're going to see when, when you grow up, what you're going to learn. How everybody who's -- who's part of your life loves you very much. Just like -- There's a little sister -- you had a little sister that I loved just as much as I love you.
>> On the next "General Hospital" --
Jason: Do something to help her.
Sonny: What's that?
Ric: It is a restraining order.
Sonny: I've already lost one daughter. I'm not going to lose Kristina.
Lois: Is Courtney right? Do you want Carly back?
John: There's something Iíd like to show you.
