[Tense music]

Ben: [Gasps] Oh, my god. It's you. Jordan?

Jordan: [Exhales deeply] In the flesh.

Gwen: [Sighs] Blackmailing sack of--

[Sighs] Suppose I don't have much choice in the matter, though, do I? My god. I'm a bloody drug mule! Chad? How long have you been standing there?

Steve: Here we go. Just a little snack to sustain us. Got some of your favorites here.

Kayla: Mm, lovely. Thank you, thank you.

Steve: Baby, you're working like crazy. It's the least I could do. So listen. How long has it been since we've had any time alone together?

Kayla: I don't remember. But I remember liking it.

Steve: Yeah, me, too. So what do you think we should do with this special time we have? Any ideas?

Kayla: I got a few.

Steve: So do I.

Kayla: You do?

Steve: Yeah. A little bit of this.

Kayla: [Chuckles]

Steve: A little bit of that.

Tripp: Pompous ass.

Steve: Whoa, whoa, whoa, tripp. What are you doing here? I thought you were on duty.

Tripp: I'm supposed to be.

Both: What happened?

Tripp: Dr. Snyder happened.

Snyder: Oh, mrs. Brady. Glad I ran into you. There's something I need to tell you. About jan spears.

[Phone rings]

Shawn: Jan, hey, I've been waiting for you. Where are you?

Jan: I'm sorry. I got held up. I ran into an old friend.

Shawn: But you are still coming, right?

Jan: Yeah. Just have a little business to take care of first. Right, claire?

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."

[Soft orchestration]

Chad: I just got here. Sorry if I startled you.

Gwen: No, it's fine. I'm, um...[Stammers] A bit jumpy these days.

Chad: What are those?

Gwen: They're painkillers that my doctor gave me.

Chad: You're in pain?

Gwen: I can handle it.

Chad: I'm sure you can. I hope it eases up. The pain.

Gwen: Yeah. Well, the physical part will, at least.

Chad: Right.

Gwen: Um... if you're looking for jack, I-I don't know where he is.

Chad: He had to go down to "the spectator," so told him I'd check in on you.

Gwen: You didn't have to do that.

Chad: I offered. How'd the appointment go?

Gwen: Fine.

Chad: Anything I can do?

Gwen: Yeah, you can stop feeling sorry for me and go back home to abigail. I'm sure she's not very happy with you being here with me right now.

Chad: As a matter of fact, abigail's gone.

Jordan: What's the matter, ben? Look like you've seen a ghost. Oh, that's right. You have. And do you wanna know why you keep seeing dead people? It's because you're crazy.

Ben: What do you want, jordan?

Jordan: Oh, I think you know what I want. And you also know that I'm not a ghost. I am your guilty conscience. And what I really want to know is... why are you cheating on your wife?

Claire: What are you doing?

Jan: I didn't want it to come to this. I did really want to be friends. Don't blame me for this. Blame your father.

Claire: My father?

Jan: He told me that he knew your mother was a murderer. That he was only standing by her because he had to. Then, he got me to agree to meet him at his room at the salem inn.

Claire: What?

Jan: But it was all a lie. A setup. He wanted to trick me into confessing.

Claire: Confessing to what?

Jan: To murdering charlie dale.

Belle: What about jan spears?

Snyder: I just ran into her. I gave her a piece of my mind about faking that coma.

Belle: What? What exactly did you tell her?

Snyder: That there was proof that she snuck out of her room weeks before she claimed she woke up.

Belle: Oh, my god, why in god's name would you do that?

Snyder: To pre-empt any idea she might have of a malpractice suit. To let her know that we have footage of her.

Belle: You told her that? Okay, okay, tell me you did not mention my name or shawn'S.

Snyder: Uh, no.

Belle: Oh, thank god.

Snyder: But I did say that I spoke to a female lawyer with a detective husband. I think she figured out that it was you from that.

Belle: Oh, god. Oh, my god. She knows. Jan knows.

[Phone line trilling]

Belle: Damn it, shawn. Pick up.

Snyder: I'm sorry. You didn't tell me not to talk to her.

Belle: I guess we didn't think you'd be that stupid.

Kayla: Tripp, what did dr. Snyder do?

Tripp: Look, you know what? It's not a big deal.

Kayla: You are on duty and now you're home, so you know, it's kind of a big deal.

Tripp: I know, but look. I'm sorry. I know you guys are having a nice afternoon; I'll just--

Kayla: Tripp, tell me what happened.

Steve: Hey, buddy. When she uses that voice, you're not getting out of here until you tell her.

Tripp: Okay, well-- I intubated my first patient today--well, at least I tried to. And when I had trouble establishing the airway, he told me to step aside and then he sent me home and told me not to come back until I can do it properly.

Steve: So what? He wants you to practice intubation on us?

Kayla: You know--you know-- you know, first of all, you are not expected to know how to intubate a patient on your first try or even the second try. It is dr. Snyder's job to teach you. I'll talk to him first thing in the morning.

Tripp: No, no, please, kayla. Don't, okay? He already thinks I'm only in this program because you're my stepmom.

Kayla: He knows that's not true.

Tripp: I know. Look, I really appreciate you wanting to help, but the last thing I need is you running to my rescue.

Steve: Hey. Isn't dr. Snyder the one who has the terrible bedside manner? The one you're always complaining about?

Kayla: Yeah, it is.

Steve: So why don't you just fire the jerk?

[Knocking at door]

Belle: Why didn't you answer the phone?

Shawn: What are you doing here? Jan is on her way!

Belle: No, she's not. She knows that we're onto her.

Shawn: No, I just got off the phone with her. She said on her way.

Belle: What?

Shawn: She said that she was on her way, but that she had something to do first.

Claire: That doesn't make any sense. Why would my parents try to trick you into admitting you killed charlie? Jan, you were in a coma when it happened. Everybody knows that it couldn't have been you.

Jan: I may have woken up earlier than I let on.

Claire: How much earlier?

Jan: A couple weeks.

Claire: What? Why would you not want people to know?

Jan: Because having everyone think I was comatose was great cover. I could find out people's secrets, and use them to get what I wanted.

Claire: And what was it that you wanted?

Jan: Your father, of course.

[Chuckles] Having everyone think I was in vegetative state, I decided to sneak out of the hospital to go see him. Oh, claire, it was so romantic. It was valentine's day.

Belle: [Chuckles] Okay.

[Gasps] Oh, it's the coat from the window at saxton'S. Oh, I love it.

Shawn: Happy valentine's day.

Jan: Isn't it just like your mother to reduce valentine's day to crass materialism?

Claire: My father was the one who bought her that coat.

Jan: [Chuckles] Well... how long do you think she'd been nagging him before that? Anyway, I decided to keep an eye on this place. And when I came back, I couldn't believe what I saw. Charlie was attacking you.

Claire: Help! Help me!

Jan: I was just about to go in and pull him off you...

Belle: Claire?

Jan: But then your mother showed up.

Belle: You stay away from my daughter!

Claire: You were here that night?

Jan: Isn't that what I just said?

Claire: But when I came to visit you in the hospital and I told you what had happened, you--you acted like you had no idea.

Jan: What was I supposed to say, claire? That I had been faking my coma for the last couple months? But I meant what I said. About charlie deserving what he got.

Claire: I hate you.

Belle: You get the hell out of this house. And if you come near my daughter again, I swear to god, I will kill you.

Jan: When I heard belle threatening him, that's when I got the idea.

Claire: What kind of idea?

Jan: To punish charlie for hurting you. And to get rid of your bitch mother at the same time. I've got moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Gwen: Abigail's gone.

Chad: She went to boston to spend some time with her mother. She, um, had to sort some things out.

Gwen: I see. It must be hard on you. And the children.

Chad: The kids are resilient. And it'll help that they can video chat every day.

Gwen: I miss them.

Chad: They ask about you.

Gwen: Thanks for telling me that; that means a lot. Thank you. So, um... you said that abigail went to boston to sort some things out?

Chad: Yeah. She was feeling... she was feeling guilty about--about the baby.

Gwen: Oh. Chad, when I said that abigail pushed me--

Chad: Yeah. You were lying. Jack told me you admitted it.

Gwen: I'm sorry. I know that that doesn't even mean anything after all the crap that I pulled. Who cares if I'm sorry, right? But I am, and I-- I'm going to tell abigail. I will phone her myself and I will tell her the truth and I will tell anyone else that she wants me to tell. I'm sorry that I'm the reason that she left.

Chad: Don't be. She didn't leave here because of you.

Ben: Cheating on my wife? What the hell are you talking about?

Jordan: Oh, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Making out with claire?

Ben: I didn't make out with claire. It didn't mean anything.

Jordan: Ah. Well, if it didn't mean anything, why is your guilty conscience standing in front of you? You see, that's how this works.

Ben: Okay. Maybe I am a little guilty about it, but it was claire who kissed me.

Jordan: Oh, right. Right after you told her all about your pain and anguish, right? Just like you told ciara all about your pain and anguish. I mean, you really use your suffering like some men use cologne. I mean-- I mean, it sounds like a real panty-dropper.

Ben: Just stop.

Jordan: Hey, I mean, don't shoot the messenger, okay? I am just your conscience, okay? I am saying what you think deep down inside. Just like the whole, "oh, divorce papers! Oh, no! It can't be!" I mean, come on. What did you think ciara was doing when she went with theo to south africa? Going for a photo safari? That her going 8,500 miles to get away from you her version of couple's therapy?

Ben: She doesn't remember! She doesn't remember what we had!

Jordan: Oh, well, unfortunately for you, she does remember that you're a serial killer!

Ben: And she forgave me. Because she loved me.

Jordan: Oh, right. Oh, my god, brother. Why do I bother talking to you? This is just like on your wedding night and I told you that your wedded bliss was going to end in a disaster. She was gonna figure out who you were--a killer-- and she was gonna go running in the other direction exactly like she did.

Ben: That's not what happened.

Jordan: Well, actually, it is!

Ben: It was eve and it was vincent.

Jordan: Oh, my god, here come the excuses! "It was eve! It was vincent!" You know it wasn't you who strangled eve's beautiful, young daughter. No. It wasn't you who shot vincent's fiancée like a dog. No, it was them. It was their fault. The sun was in your eyes.

Ben: Please stop.

Jordan: You know, does it surprise you that your past came back to haunt you? I mean, I really think that you asking her to marry you was the most selfish thing in the history of selfish.

Ben: Yes.

Jordan: Well, she lived in hell because of you. And now, when she asks you for a divorce, you go and find comfort in the one person who set her on fire a couple times!

[Sighs] I mean, really, that is a match made in heaven. Or hell.

Claire: So what did you do, jan?

Jan: I hung around to see what would happen next. Your dad came home and your mom told him what had happened. They realized that you had left the house, so your father went to go find you, leaving his clueless wife there all alone.

[Soft dramatic music]

I realized that was my chance. As soon as she left the room, I snuck in here and grabbed her coat.

Claire: So you figured you'd set her up.

Jan: Make sure charlie never hurt anyone ever again. So I went straight to his place. Of course, I didn't have a gun, then. I thought I'd stab him in his bed while he slept, but then I saw the gun sitting there. It was too perfect, like it had been left just for me. I didn't find out till weeks later that charlie had taken it away from allie earlier that night.

Charlie: Mrs. Brady?

Jan: Someday.

Charlie: You. Uh-- I thought you were supposed to be in a coma.

Jan: Supposed to be. But I'm not.

Charlie: What are you doing here?

Jan: I saw what you did to my friend, claire. Threatening her, backing her up against a wall. What were you gonna do if her mother hadn't come in when she did?

Charlie: Uh--I--nothing. She--she was t-threatening me.

Jan: I don't care what she did. That's no way to treat a lady. This is for claire, for allie, and for me. For everyone who's ever been a victim of men like you. You're not gonna get away with what you did.

Charlie: Don't shoot.

[Dramatic music]

Jan: He went down like a sack of potatoes. This is the sound of an asthma attack...

Kayla: I can't just fire dr. Snyder.

Steve: Why not? You're chief of staff.

Kayla: Because there are procedures that need to be followed. There's documentation of incidents that you have to--

Tripp: And treating med students like crap is just par for the course.

Kayla: Yeah, especially people who do, like dr. Snyder. If he's called on it, he is going to just claim that he's doing what's best for the student, he's toughing him up, making him a better doctor.

Steve: Yeah, when what he's really doing is robbing them of their confidence.

Kayla: Well, I really hope that that doesn't happen to tripp.

Steve: I'm glad he has you there, baby.

Kayla: Even so, the constant berating of dr. Snyder to him and the other medical students? It's damaging, to say the least. What these young people need is encouragement, not some guy who is taking delight out of humiliating them.

Steve: I'm sorry you have to deal with that.

Kayla: I'm sorry that the students have to deal with it. I am trying to change the climate down there, but tripp is right. Just because I don't like the guy or I think he's an arrogant ass doesn't mean that I can just snap my fingers and make him disappear.

Steve: I get it. I mean, you've been having trouble with this guy for years. If you could've fired him, I'm sure you would have by now.

Kayla: Yeah, you're damn right I would've.

Shawn: Hold on. Wait, wait. How do you know that jan's not coming?

Belle: Because I just came from the hospital, I was talking to that dr. Snyder guy and he told her that we saw the surveillance footage.

Shawn: Damn it.

Belle: I know, so she knows that--that we're onto her and she must know that we were setting her up by asking her to come here.

Shawn: Wait a minute. Jan said that she ran into an old friend. Jan doesn't have any friends.

Belle: No, just...

Claire: So that's how charlie died?

Jan: Actually, he wasn't dead, yet.

Claire: What do you mean?

Jan: I thought he was. I mean, there was so much blood and he wasn't moving. But I couldn't check, because i had to get back to the hospital before anyone realized I was gone. And that's when I heard a noise outside the apartment.

[Soft dramatic music]

Later, when I heard john say that he was there, realized it must've been him.

Claire: That's when my grandfather--he saw you from behind. He saw the red coat and he thought that you were my mom.

Jan: Yeah. That was a stroke of good luck. And that damned apartment turned into grand central station. Soon as john left, someone else showed up.

[Pounding on door]

Tripp: Charlie, open the damned door now!

[Pounding on door]

Charlie: Tripp... tripp. [Gasps] Help me.

[Labored breathing]

Jan: Ah. Look who isn't dead. I thought about putting another bullet in him to finish him off. But then I decided... you don't deserve to be put out of your misery. Then I left him there to die.

Jordan: Granted, claire's never actually killed anyone, unlike you, but it wasn't for lack of trying.

Ben: You're one to talk, jordan.

Jordan: Well, you know, i guess it does run in the family. Is this also where you leap to her defense? "It wasn't her fault. She's mentally ill."

[Scoffs] Tell me again that you don't have feelings for her.

Ben: I don'T.

Jordan: Hmm. Okay. Here, then just give ciara the divorce she wants. Then you don't have to feel guilty. Just sign on the dotted line.

Jan: I was about to go. But then I remembered there was one more thing I had to do.

[Suspenseful music]

Claire: So you really did kill charlie? And you set my mom up to take the fall.

Jan: I thought of everything. I came back here, put the coat exactly where I had found it so that no one would ever know it was gone. Your mom must've heard me. She came in a second later. But she never saw me. So I tucked myself back into my hospital bed and I just waited for them to arrest her. Instead, they arrested that cow, sami, and then they went on to look at 16 other suspects, so I had to wake up, steer those idiot cops in the right direction.

Claire: You said that my dad tried to trick you into confessing. Well, now, you've confessed to me. So what are you gonna do?

Jan: You'll see.

Chad: Abby isn't a person who excuses herself. She--she doesn't let herself off the hook.

Gwen: She wasn't on the hook. She didn't push me.

Chad: Yeah, well, she knows that. She doesn't need you to exonerate her. She's--she's upset with herself. She's upset about how she felt about the baby. Our baby, she'S... upset about how she felt about the baby from the moment she found out you were pregnant. She's upset that she tried to encouraged you to terminate the pregnancy.

Gwen: Yeah, well, she was terribly upset at the time.

Chad: We all were. What are you thinking?

Gwen: Just remembering how it felt. Knowing that I had this life growing inside of me...

[Sighs] It gave me a tremendous amount of hope, actually, 'cause I-- I felt like I could somehow redeem myself by being a good mother to my child. Our child. And as fraught as it was, and for the very short time that I was pregnant... I don't think I've ever been happier. What?

Chad: Nothing.

Gwen: No, it's not nothing. I know you still hate me.

Chad: I have a lot of regrets. I regret my part in all of it. But I am very sorry that you lost the baby.

Tripp: Look, I'm sorry. I obviously interrupted. All right? So I'm just gonna go to my room and spend a few very exciting hours with my intubation kit.

Kayla: Well, you know what? I'm gonna work on this later today with you. I promise you, we are gonna make you a pro in no time.

Tripp: Thank you. Both of you.

Claire: [Breathing heavily]

Jan: What is it? What's wrong?

Claire: Please, water! Water! I can't breathe!

Jan: This better not be a trick.

Claire: Please, please!

[Breathing heavily]

Ben: No. I won't ever give up on ciara.

Jordan: [Sighs] Boring.

[Phone ringing] Oh, let me guess. Is that your new girlfriend? She probably wants you to come over and finish what you started earlier. Bow-chika-wow-wow. Go ahead, answer it. Jaycee tried gain flings for the first time the other day.

[Phone ringing]

Jordan: Go ahead. Just pretend I'm not here.

[Tense music]

Claire: [Breathing heavily]

Gwen: I believe you.

[Sighs] Chad, I know that... having this baby would've... caused so many problems for you and abigail, but that is not why I wanted to move forward with the pregnancy.

Chad: I know.

Gwen: [Inhales deeply] It's just like I've said before many times, I felt that... being a good mother to this child would've... been my chance to redeem myself. At least in my eyes, anyway. No longer concern myself with how others regard me. Anyway, I feel like it would've been the one thing I'd be good at. Being a mother. I haven't really had much family, as you know, up until a few months ago. And this baby... would've been my family. She would've needed me. And I would have loved her. She may not have been conceived in love, but I... I would've loved her. God, I wanted her.

Chad: I know.

[Soft dramatic music]

Gwen: Really feels good knowing that I'm not mourning her alone.

Chad: She was my child, too.

Gwen: [Sighs] Thank you for saying that.

Shawn: Just what?

Belle: Why would jan bother to call you and say that she was with a friend?

Shawn: Why does jan do anything that she does?

Belle: To tell you something. You're right, jan doesn't have any friends, but there is one person that she thinks is her friend.

Shawn: Oh, my god. It's claire.

[Dramatic music]

Ben: I'm not signing these damn papers, and there's not a thing that you can say or do that's gonna make me change my mind. So just go away.

Jordan: You are just putting off the inevitable. Well, fine. I'll go. Don't forget to check your voicemail.

Ben: 11 minutes.

Claire: Jan, my parents could come home any minute. Put the gun away. Just let me go.

Ben: Oh, my god, claire.

Kayla: I mean, what is wrong with that man? I mean, on tripp's first, I mean very first attempt at intubating a patient, he makes him feel like a failure and sends him home.

Steve: Well, that can't be an easy thing to do.

Kayla: You're darn right it's not easy. I mean, even the most experienced anesthesiologists have trouble with it sometimes because it just depends on the patient and the size of their airway. But for him to castigate tripp for not succeeding on his first try? Ugh! It just makes me furious. I wanna get in the car right now, I wanna drive over to the hospital, and I would intubate him myself with a firehose.

Steve: Yeah, I'd like to see that.

Kayla: [Sighs] I mean, how dare he treat a medical student like that. How dare he treat anybody like that.

Steve: Well, you said that maybe he thinks he's trying to toughen them up.

Kayla: Yeah, I don't really know what that son of a bitch thinks. I just meant that that would probably be his excuse for his abusive behavior.

[Sighs] I mean, isn't that what bullies do? They claim that the people who are respectful and supportive, that they're just coddlers and enablers?

Steve: Right. I know what you're saying.

Kayla: He definitely is no god's gift to medicine, I'll tell you that.

Steve: Baby, baby. Come on. Why you getting so worked up--

Kayla: Because it's escalating! Don't you see that? The insults and the bullying. I used to just excuse his behavior as snyder being curmudgeonly snyder. But I can't do that anymore because it's becoming a toxic environment. And I just feel like something-- something really bad is going to happen because of him.

Gwen: Well, it was very nice of you to come over, but you don't need to stay. Dr. Snyder says I'll be fine.

Chad: Yeah, if you're sure.

Gwen: I am.

Chad: Okay. You can call me if you need anything.

Gwen: I will.

[Soft dramatic music]

Snyder: There you go.

Gwen: What's this?

Snyder: It's your assignment. So I need you to just take it to that address right there and give it to whoever opens the door.

Gwen: And what is it that I am delivering?

Snyder: [Scoffs] Uh, well, that is on a need-to-know basis, and you don't need to know.

[Phone ringing] Dr. Snyder.

Gwen: Yes, hello. This is gwen rizczech. You've got me involved in some sort of a drug operation? What on earth?

Snyder: I told you not to open the package. Just--[Groans] Do as you're told.

Gwen: I am not going to break the law for you.

Snyder: You do exactly what I tell you to do. Or I will make it public knowledge that you lost that baby before you took that little header down the stairs. And you did everything you could to keep it quiet.

Belle: She's not answering.

Shawn: Come on, let's go.

Belle: Okay.

[Dramatic music]

Ben: Claire, what the hell did she do to you?
