Episode #13998 ~ Allie tries to protect Tripp. as Rafe eliminates one murder suspect, a new one arises. Sami admits to Lucas her marriage is in trouble. John has a tense encounter with Jan.
Provided By SuzanneSami: Not now, Susan, please.
Lucas: It's not Susan. It's Lucas. Come on, open up. Susan let me in.
Lucas: Did you lock yourself in this room?
Sami: Yes. I just don't want to get stuck having a heart-to-heart with that woman. She just goes on and on and... what are you doing here?
Lucas: I just came to congratulate you on your release, although they didn't have a "I'm happy that they didn't use your false confession to convict you" card. If they had that at the store...
Sami: Okay, stop, all right? Don't make fun of me. It was a nightmare. I mean, seriously. Oh, my god. I just-- I swear I am never going to confess to a murder that I didn't commit again.
Lucas: How many people have said that?
Sami: Don't laugh at me.
Lucas: It's fine, you know, back to your old self up to your neck in trouble sitting in jail. That was great. It was classic Sami.
Sami: Well, classic Sami takes it out of me more than it used to. Yeah, thank you. Thank you for being there for me, for everything, for looking out for Allie. Boy, that kid has been through the ringer.
Lucas: Yeah, but she's tough. Just like her mama.
Kayla: Allie, hi.
Allie: Hi, sorry to just drop by like this. I was hoping I could talk to Tripp.
Kayla: Oh, well, he's not here, but he'll be back soon. He's moving back in with us. He and Steve went to go pack up his things. Well, you're welcome to wait for him if you want.
Allie: Sure. Yeah, if that would be all right.
Kayla: Sure, of course. I would love the company. In fact, I just made some tea. Would you like some?
Allie: Yeah, if it's not too much trouble.
Kayla: Nope. I'll get you a cup.
Allie: [Sighs] You went to Charlie's place the night he was killed? Tripp, what did you do?
Kayla: Allie, is everything all right?
Tripp: Look, I really appreciate you and Kayla letting me move back in.
Steve: You know, I never wanted you to move out in the first place, so I'm just glad you're coming back home.
Tripp: Yeah, me too, you know, even though I don't really have much choice since Mom's giving up the apartment.
Steve: Yeah, I've got to say, I didn't see that coming.
Tripp: I mean, she can't afford it anymore. She's cutting all her ties with Vitali family business.
Steve: Yeah, you know, it's her cutting ties with the Vitali money that really took me aback.
Tripp: Dad, come on.
Tripp: Look, I get it, all right? I know your history with her. I know the things she's done, but she's been through--she's been through so much, all right? This business with Charlie has really changed her.
Steve: Well, like I said, I'm sorry. I know you're worried about her.
Tripp: I am. I am, and, you know, and this investigation just keeps dragging on until we just-- it's been really hard to just move forward, leave all that behind.
Steve: Well, now that Rafe doesn't have to deal with a Sami show, maybe he'll be able to focus on who really killed your brother.
Ava: Why do you look at me like that?
Rafe: Hmm. No, it's just... since you've been staying here I've gotten to know you pretty well. You know, we talk about a lot of stuff, and you told me about yourself about yourself and about your life, about Charlie. But now...
Ava: Now what?
Rafe: Just got the feeling there's something you're not telling me. I know it must have been awful for you to have found Charlie the way you did. But I just think there's another reason that you have stayed silent for so long.
You need to tell me the rest.
Ava: I'm afraid that... that Tripp did it.
Marlena: I'm not sure we should have let John go in there. You know how she pushes his buttons? Jan's just trouble for him.
Belle: I know, but there's no stopping him. You know how he gets when he's dead set on something.
Jan: You. What are you doing here?
John: We have some unfinished business.
Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "Days of Our Lives."
Jan: I asked you what you're doing here.
John: I came to apologize.
Jan: Let go of me or I'm gonna scream.
John: Please hear me out. I'm not here to hurt you. I just want to talk.
Jan: Well, make it short. I'm still recovering.
John: I just--I just wanted to try to explain where my-- where my head was at that night when you--you told me that Izzy was dead, that you had killed her. I just--I don't know. I just--I just lost it.
Jan: Yeah, I know. I was there.
John: I took matters into my own hands.
Jan: You didn't take matters in your own hands. It was my neck.
John: I know. I know, and I am truly sorry about that.
Jan: I think you really are.
John: I am.
Jan: Well, one could say that I--I sort of, you know, provoked you.
John: Well, thanks for saying that anyway.
Jan: You're welcome. The fact that I can admit that I might have gone over the top, it-- it doesn't let you off the hook. So if Belle insists on pressing charges against me, then I'm going to do the same to you, and then we're both going to prison.
Belle: As dad's lawyer, I don't think that he should be talking to Jan.
Marlena: Yeah, well, as someone who saw him try to kill her, I would tend to agree.
Belle: But I don't think dad is going to try to hurt her. I don't think you have to worry about that.
Marlena: But I do. This aneurysm has cost him all self-control, and we know that Jan has a way of getting under people's skin.
Belle: Yes, tell me about it. Jan can make Mahatma Gandhi want to strangle her, but I don't think dad's going to hurt her. I mean, he's back to his old self, right? He hasn't had any incidents in a while.
John: What if I got out of my car, went up to Charlie's apartment, and just blew that little bastard away?
Belle: Has he?
Ava: And just as I got there I saw Tripp leaving.
Rafe: And when you went in, Charlie had already been shot?
Rafe: Have you talked to Tripp about this?
Ava: I tried, but we got interrupted.
Rafe: Interrupted or he was evasive?
Ava: No, we really got interrupted. Nicole came over, Tripp left, and then she saw how upset i was, and I ended up telling her. She actually said I should tell you.
Rafe: [Scoffs] She's the only one in Salem who thinks you should talk to the cops.
Ava: Rafe, this isn't easy for me. I was raised not to trust the cops. I mean, let alone be a rat and turn my son over to one.
Rafe: Well, you wouldn't have had to if he had come to us.
Ava: You know, I have finally got my son back after all these years, and it is the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I'm terrified that I'm going to lose him again.
Steve: Okay, so is this everything?
Steve: Isn't the next step getting it into the car?
Tripp: Before we go back, there's somebody I need to talk to you about.
Steve: Okay. What?
Tripp: It's about the night Charlie died.
Lucas: Since when do you hide a big bag of chips in your room?
Sami: Oh, well, it's been a long time, but since I found out that Susan wasn't going anywhere, and I didn't want to just run into her all willy nilly in the kitchen.
Lucas: Oh, well, we can get something else to eat, like, something real. We can go to the pub, grab some chowder or something.
Sami: No, I don't want to see anyone, talk to anyone.
Lucas: Oh, then I'll leave.
Sami: Oh, no, not you. I meant anyone else. You know, you're you, Lucas. You don't count.
Lucas: Oh, thanks. Thanks, I guess.
Sami: I didn't mean it that way.
Lucas: All right.
Sami: It's just I don't want to talk to anyone I have to explain what happened. You were there with me the whole time. You already know everything.
Lucas: Well, thank god for Rafe, you know. Thank god he cleared you. It's amazing how well you get along with all your exes. It's really great. I saw the way you looked at him. I mean, you get along with me too, you know.
Sami: Yeah, sometimes I get along with you better than when I was married to you.
Lucas: Oh, zing, zow, whoo.
Sami: But I really appreciate you being there for me, seriously, so...so I got you these potato chips.
Lucas: Mm, I'm not falling for that. No, no, I'm big enough. Thank you. It is great, you know, that you were there for Allie, and, of course, I was going to be there for her. I mean, you were protecting her, so... and I--I'm glad I came by here, because I wanted to have a chance to say goodbye to you.
Sami: Are you going somewhere?
Lucas: No, but you probably are. I'm sure you want to get back to EJ. What? What is it?
Sami: I don't know. I don't know what I want to do.
Sami: I think I just want to stay here in Salem a little while longer.
Lucas: Spend some more time with Allie and Henry? That'd be nice. I mean, Allie does kind of feel guilty that she took you away from EJ, all stuff she's going through.
Sami: No, no, I can't put this on Allie or Henry. It's me.
Lucas: What's going on with you? I mean, why don't you want to go back to Italy?
Sami: I guess I just don't think I have anything to go back for.
Rafe: Just because you're telling me the truth that does not mean that you are handing Tripp over to the cops.
Ava: Oh, sure as hell feels like it. Rafe, I was raised not to tell the cops anything, let alone implicate my own son in a murder case.
Rafe: Did you know, okay, it wasn't until Sami finally started telling me the truth that I was able to clear her and Allie? All right, and just because you saw Tripp coming out of the building, that does not mean that he shot Charlie.
Ava: Yeah, but it--
Rafe: But what?
Ava: No, it's just... it's the timing. You know, how do you get away from the timing? I--I saw him leaving the building, and then I went right in. And I saw Charlie, and he was still alive.
Rafe: All right, but hey, let's not jump to conclusions, all right? We're going to take this one step at a time. And listen, he is innocent until proven guilty.
Rafe: All right.
Rafe: Now, obviously, i have to question him. You know that, but I promise you I will do everything that I can to help him as I'm sure will Steve.
Rafe: Where is Tripp now?
Ava: He's moving back into Kayla and Steve's. He should be there now.
Rafe: Okay. All right, let's go.
Allie: Sorry, Nicole just texted me letting me know Henry's asleep.
Kayla: Tripp said that he's teething. Boy, I remember what that's like.
Allie: My god. Did Tripp tell you though that he is amazing? I mean, Henry loves him. He really has a way with him.
Kayla: I'm just so happy that you two have worked things out after everything that you've been through.
Allie: You mean what I put him through.
Allie: And you and uncle Steve and Caleb. I really wanted to say that I'm sorry for dragging you into that whole mess.
Kayla: You did not drag me into anything. I understood what you were going through, and I just wanted the truth to come out, and it did, and Tripp was cleared. Now all we have to do is get on with our lives.
Tripp: I should have told you this right away, but I just-- I just couldn't.
Steve: Okay, just tell me now whatever it is.
Tripp: That night, I went to go see Charlie.
Steve: The night he was shot?
Steve: God, I hope you're not telling me that you're the one who killed him.
John: Jan. I didn't apologize to you just so you wouldn't press charges.
Jan: Good. Like I said, if your darling Isabella decides to press charges against me, I'm going to do the same to you.
John: I can't promise that's not going to happen.
Jan: Well, then this conversation's over.
John: Yeah. I guess it is.
Belle: Mom, did something happen? Did Dad have another episode?
Marlena: Give it a second. Hold on.
John: Well, she's still going to press charges against me unless you promise that you won't press charges against her.
Belle: Yeah. Well, that's not surprising, but I came ready to make a deal with her.
Marlena: Wait a minute. How can you guarantee that she will hold up her side of the bargain?
Belle: What choice do I have? I'm not going to let dad go to jail.
John: And I'm not going to let Jan Spears go free.
Sami: Just forget I said anything.
Lucas: Well, no, that's not going to happen, so...
Sami: You know what? I'm hungry. Let's go to the pub, get a burger.
Lucas: Well, we're not going anywhere until you tell me what's going on with you.
Sami: I was just feeling sorry for myself. It's no big deal.
Lucas: Okay, that's good that you admitted that. How about you talk, I'll play therapist, and I'll listen. Come on. Come on. It's me.
Sami: Okay, you know how I don't like to give up on anything.
Lucas: I don't know that. Really? That's amazing. Interesting. Go ahead.
Sami: Right. Well, I set my mind to something, and I see it through. I keep going until I make it happen. But this thing with EJ... helping him get healthy, helping him be EJ again, it's been the most important thing I have done in my entire life, except...
Lucas: Except what?
Sami: Except maybe he's been through too much. Kristen kidnapping him, holding him captive, all those drugs fed him, and then the fire. I don't know if he can ever be EJ again.
Kayla: You know, if you need to get to Henry, I can certainly tell Tripp to get ahold of you.
Allie: No. No. It's okay. I'll wait.
Kayla: Is everything okay? You seem tense. I mean, if you want to talk about something.
[Knock at door]
Kayla: Oh, who could that be? One second.
Rafe: Hi, Kayla.
Kayla: Hello, Rafe.
Rafe: I'm sorry to bother you.
Ava: Is Tripp here?
Kayla: No. He's not. He and Steve went to your place to get his things, but he'll be back soon.
Allie: Why do you need to talk to him, and why are you here?
Rafe: It's police business.
Kayla: Well, I guess you should come in then.
Rafe: Okay. Thank you.
Steve: Hey, Allie.
Tripp: Hey. Hey, Mom.
Allie: Police business.
Ava: Honey, I'm sorry. I just--I had to tell Rafe what happened the night Charlie died. I just--I had to tell him the truth.
Tripp: Right. Okay. Look, it's all going to be all right, all right? I know you only did this to protect me.
Ava: What are you talking about? Discover the replenishing power
Tripp: I know that when Charlie made those threats against me you thought you had to stop him to protect me. Look, she knew how dangerous Charlie was. You have to understand how far he pushed her.
Ava: Wait, I didn't do anything to Charlie.
Tripp: But I don't understand. You said you told Rafe the truth.
Ava: I didn't kill Charlie. I told him that I saw you leaving the building.
Sami: I never say I can't do something, you know, but when Johnny moved out and then--well, then Sydney went off to school, it was just the two of us, just EJ and me. And things changed. I shouldn't be telling you this. Oh, my god. What am I doing?
Lucas: Well, you've got to tell somebody about it, don't you, I mean, someone who's 100% on your side?
Sami: Are you? About this?
Lucas: Yeah. I am. I--I am here for you. I am on your side.
Sami: Okay. Look, it's just been really hard for EJ. You have to understand, I mean, the amount of pain that he has been in, right?
Lucas: I know.
Sami: And he doesn't like to admit it, right? He's very proud, so he tries to pretend like he's not in pain, and then sometimes he can't help it. He needs--he needs my help when he has no other choice, and he hates that too, and now he's just mad all the time. He's mad at the pain, and he was mad that he was helpless, and he was just mad at the world. And I understand that, right? I mean, I can understand all of that in my mind, but-- but sometimes in my heart it feels like he's mad at me, and I know he's not. I know it's not that. It's just--it's just hard, you know, and I kept telling myself it would get better, right? Like, once the pain goes away, everything will be fine. But that's not what happened. It's not just the pain. It's like--it's like there's something that got, like, twisted up inside of him, and--and now he just pushes me away.
Lucas: Well, I can be objective and tell you that that sounds like hell.
Sami: Yeah. It really was. I mean, it's just been hell for EJ, and all I could do is just sit there and watch it.
Lucas: You weren't watching it; you were living it. You were there by his side the whole time. Let's face it, EJ wasn't exactly a giving person before this happened.
Sami: Lucas, that's not true.
Lucas: It is true, Sam You've done everything you can for that man. Listen, if somebody is drowning and they try to take you down with them and you push away, that is not giving up. It's called survival.
Belle: I don't have a choice. I'm not going to let dad go to prison.
John: No, damn it all. Izzy, if that woman goes free, she's a danger to you and Claire. Now, here's what you're gonna do. You're going to call Shawn. He's going to arrest her. Let the chips fall where they may, and if I get arrested, so be it.
Belle: Well, with all due respect, it's not your decision to make. I am going to make a deal with her, and there's just really nothing you can do to change my mind.
John: I'll go down to the station, I'll file my own charges against her.
Belle: She didn't do anything to you, Dad.
John: I'll lie.
Marlena: Stop it, you two, right now. We will not do this here. We'll go to the pub, and we'll do it there.
John: Well, that sounds like a plan, but I'm not going to change my mind.
Belle: Yeah, you've made that very clear. Well, you two go ahead. I guess I have to call Shawn and get the process started. I'll meet you there.
John: After Shawn arrests her, have him shoot me off a copy of her mug shot. Thank you.
Jan: You've got to be kidding, liver and onions or fish sticks? No cocktail menu?
Jan: Hey. Not now, Belle, about to order my dinner.
Belle: Yeah. Well, that's going to have to wait. Because see, you and I, we're going to have a little chat.
Jan: I had a feeling I'd be seeing you. Did you really think an "I'm so sorry I strangled you" would be your daddy's get out of jail free card?
Belle: So he strangled you. He only did what anyone who's ever met you has wanted to do.
Jan: Hey, don't you think you should be a little nicer to the girl who could put your father in the big house?
Belle: That's exactly why I'm here. I can't let my father go to prison.
Jan: No? That's not really up to you, though, is it?
Belle: Which is why I've come to accept your deal, the one you wanted. You don't press charges against my father, and I won't press charges against you.
John: You do see that I'm right about this?
Marlena: I see that you think you're doing what's best for Belle.
John: And Claire. Doc, this woman is dangerous. If we let her think she's getting away with this, this deal is just going to empower her. Next thing you know, she'll think she can get away with murder.
Marlena: Have you thought to look at this from Belle's point of view? I mean, first of all, it is her decision to make.
John: No, it's not.
Marlena: Ohh. And secondly, darling, if you go to prison, Belle's not going to blame Jan. She's going to blame herself.
John: No, she won't, because it won't be her fault.
Marlena: Oh, I--this is so painful. I can't believe this. I don't know who is more stubborn.
John: Oh, that's easy, duck. I am.
Ava: I saw you leaving the apartment building, so when I went in and then I saw that Charlie had been shot, I--I thought that maybe you had done it.
Tripp: Well--well, I did go back there, because I thought Charlie was getting worse, which I didn't even think was possible, but, I mean, after all the horrible things he did, he topped himself. He was threatening to take Henry away from Allie, and I wasn't gonna let that happen.
Ava: Oh, honey.
Tripp: No, and then I--I got there, and I just-- I was banging on the door. I was calling his name, but he didn't answer, and I just thought he was ignoring me or just wasn't home. But I didn't shoot him, Mom. I didn't.
Ava: Oh, thank god. Oh, thank god. So, uh, yeah, just a silly mistake.
Rafe: Here we go again.
Tripp: I tried to tell you a few times when I found it wasn't Allie's mom who did it. And I remembered Gabi accusing you of killing Charlie, and I remember that she said that you were sneaking out the back door that night.
Rafe: Did either of you ever consider telling me this?
Tripp: Okay, yes, I should have, but my mom didn't do this.
Ava: Yeah, neither did Tripp.
Ava: You believe us, don't you?
Rafe: Listen, as I said before, when I went through all of this with Allie and Sami, what I believe is irrelevant. You know, all I can say, which again, I said to Allie and Sami, is that you have held up this case considerably.
Steve: Rafe, they only held back what they knew, because--
Rafe: Held back? Held back? Okay, they did a little more than hold back, all right? They lied.
Steve: Okay, they lied. But you can understand why.
Rafe: I can understand why they lied. I can understand why Sami lied, why Allie lied. Now, can you understand that if any of them had told the truth about a murder that we could have narrowed down the time of death, that we could have interviewed them to find out exactly what they have seen, that maybe we could have found out who shot Charlie, and better yet, found the killer who is still out there on the loose.
John: Doc, I really want you to back me up on this.
Marlena: Really? Because she won't listen to me any more than you do.
John: Don't you see? I can't shake the thought that I might have killed Charlie Dale, and if I did, I might end up in prison anyway.
Jan: So you're caving. That must hurt. I know how much you want to see me locked up.
Belle: Well, you don't always get what you want.
Jan: Your father's okay with this? I mean, he said flat out he wouldn't go along with it.
Belle: Well, it's not his decision. I'm the only one who can press charges against you, and nobody can make me do that if I don't want to.
Jan: What's this?
Belle: I drew it up this morning. I know you don't trust me any more than I trust you.
Jan: You got that right.
Belle: So this will make it official. This is a legal agreement saying that I won't press charges against you and you won't press charges against my father. Sign it.
Sami: I know what you think of EJ. I know what everyone in this town thinks about EJ.
Lucas: And we're all wrong, really?
Sami: Look, I know how tired it sounds, okay? But you don't know him the way that I do. Nobody understands him the way that I do. And I know that he is ruthless, okay, that he's driven and ambitious. But when it was just the two of us, all of that would just go away. I knew how much he loved me. I can feel it inside.
Lucas: You said "loved." I mean, it's past tense, so...
Sami: Everything that EJ has been through, the pain... I don't know. He doesn't look at me with love anymore. He doesn't touch me anymore, and I don't know if that's ever going to change. I don't know, maybe I just have to... maybe I just have to come to terms with the fact that I'm never going to be loved again.
Lucas: Stop, that's ridiculous. You are a wonderful woman. He's so lucky to have you, you know? Just always remember that.
Kayla: Are you sure you don't want to stay? I could make you something to eat.
Allie: Thank you, but I really have to get home to Henry.
Tripp: I'll walk you out.
Kayla: All right good seeing you.
Kayla: Did you know that Tripp was there that night?
Steve: He just told me tonight. I told him he had to go to the police. Instead, the police came to him.
Allie: I really appreciate you going to Charlie's to protect Henry.
Tripp: I wasn't gonna let Charlie do that to you on top of everything else.
Allie: Thank you. You okay?
Tripp: It just--it just hit me, you know, that from when my mom said Charlie must have been in there dying when I was knocking on his door means i just must have missed the person who really killed him.
Marlena: I am not listening to this. The only real memory you have is of hearing the gunshot, and that was from a distance. You were in your car. You did not kill Charlie.
John: Yeah, then who did?
Jan: No, no, it just galls me to let your father get away with attempted murder.
Belle: Fine. Just remember that this time you won't be going to a mental institution with art therapy. This time you'll be going to prison with laundry duty. Also, don't forget that the people who witnessed my father strangle you also witnessed you in my wedding dress telling him that you had killed me. So I'm pretty sure with that narrative he's going to have a lot easier time getting off than you.
Jan: You are always so smug.
Belle: Okay, fine. I'll call Shawn.
Jan: All right. All right, I'll sign it.
Belle: Thank you. I will send you a copy, and then you can shove it. I mean, you can put it in your safe deposit box.
Jan: Hey, Miss Perfect, didn't you notice?
Belle: Notice what?
Jan: Your coat, it's missing a button.
Belle: When did that happen?
Ava: Rafe, I'm so sorry.
Rafe: Yeah, so you have repeatedly said.
Ava: I know, I just--i thought it was unfair.
Rafe: I know what you thought, okay, I know. Have you thought about why it's illegal to lie to the police? Because it's dangerous. Have you thought about how much you have helped the person who killed your son?
Ava: No. You know what? I didn't think about that. I didn't, because the only thing I was thinking about was the son that I had left.
Rafe: Mm, yeah.
Ava: You know what? I'm just--I'm going to go to a motel. You've been so good to me. I'm sorry.
Rafe: Just--no, just stop. Just stop, okay? You don't-- you don't have to go anywhere. Just stop-just stop saying you're sorry.
Ava: Aren't you hungry? Listen, let me just make you something to eat.
Rafe: I'm not hungry, okay? Just go to bed.
Ava: What are you going to do? You gonna...you gonna stay up working?
Ava: On the case?
Rafe: Yeah, on the case. Yeah. And I think I'm going to stick with hard evidence, you know, give up on witnesses, because they lie.
Lucas: What are we doing?
Sami: I don't know.
