Episode #13961 ~ Xander proposes to Sarah. Chad helps Abigail deal with a family tragedy. Gabi makes a pitch to Philip. Jake questions whether Gwen is telling the truth.

Provided By Suzanne

Gabi: All right, xander, we need to get to work. All right, we need to get this deal going asap.

[Tense music]

Philip?

Philip: You sound surprised.

Gabi: A little.

Philip: Why? This is my office.

Gabi: [Laughs] Yeah, uh, it's just that xander, uh...

Philip: Gabi, sorry to break it to you. I'm sure there's a lot of things that you probably thought that are no longer true. I hate when that happens, don't you?

Gabi: Right. So-- so where is xander?

Philip: I don't know. The unemployment line?

[Warm music]

Sarah: Wake up, you snug-a-bed.

Xander: What are you doing here?

Sarah: Well, I don't love that. You wake up to a woman in your bed, and you say, "what are you doing here?" It's not very romantic, I must say.

Xander: A very gorgeous woman.

Sarah: Ah.

Xander: And I must say my day's getting off to a much better start than I expected.

Sarah: I hope so. I'm so sorry that I couldn't spend valentine's day with you.

Xander: Vice versa.

Sarah: So I was kinda hoping that I could make it up to you somehow.

What'd you have in mind?

[Somber music]

Jack: Weather looks good. At least we won't have to worry about rain.

Doug: Jennifer, honey, did you get any breakfast? You have to eat, you know.

Julie: He's right, and I've made your favorite banana pancakes with extra peanut butter.

Abigail: Thank you. I just felt like I needed to see the kids before I go, and, you know.

Chad: I get it. I understand.

Abigail: Thanks for taking care of them. I just wasn't really in a very good place.

Chad: Please stop thanking me, okay? I love being with them, and--and they understand. You wanna know what thomas told charlotte this morning? He said, "mommy loves us. She just doesn't like us to see her sad."

Ah, I'm afraid I'm losing it in front of them. I don't wanna--

Chad: You lost somebody that you love. You need to take care of yourself, okay? Let me take care of everything else.

Abigail: Boy, she really did a number on this family, didn't she?

Chad: Who, gwen?

Abigail: From the moment she got here, she's been lying to me, she's been lying to everybody, and now, she's lying about killing my grandmother.

[Foreboding music]

Gwen: Laura horton's body was discovered in the salem inn room of ms. Gwen rizczech. Ms. Rizczech later told police the death was accidental. Questions remain whether or not dr. Horton was met with foul play.

[Sighs heavily]

Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "days of our lives."

[Soft orchestration]

Julie: What's the matter, sweetheart? I thought you liked pancakes with bananas and peanut butter.

Jennifer: I used to, but I had a bad experience with them once. Now I can't even look at them.

Julie: Bad experience.

Jennifer: I'd rather not talk about it.

Julie: Of course, I can fix you something else.

Jennifer: Oh, that's really sweet of you, julie, but I-- I don't have an appetite.

Julie: Oh, okay. Darling, would you like these pancakes?

Doug: Oh, honey, I don't-- I'm not really hungry right now. I'm sorry you went to all that trouble.

Julie: Oh, it's, it's okay. It gave me something to do. Jack, like a pancake?

Jack: No, thank you. Thank you, julie, no.

Julie: I don't know what was the matter with me. I should have known nobody would feel like eating. Jack, dear, what are you thinking about?

Jack: It was-- it was right here. Right here. Laura told me what she did. Turning gwen's mother away, stopping the checks, and she died not doing anything about the child, my child, and I just let her have it. Oh, I was on fire. I was brutal, I--I went for the jugular.

Julie: Jack, under the circumstances, your anger was justifiable.

Jack: Maybe, maybe. But it drove her to gwen's room. Drove her to confess, try to atone, whatever, and we all know how that ended. It was laura, and I kicked her when she was down, and now she's dead, and now...

Julie: Stop. Just stop that, jack. I won't hear this. It was not your fault. It wasn't laura's fault. No, like every horrible thing that's happened in the last year to this family, and there have been so many I've lost count of them, it was gwen's fault.

Jennifer: Auntie julie.

Doug: Honey, maybe we better talk about this another time.

Julie: Well, what better time to talk about it than right now? We are burying laura today, and gwen is carrying on as though she is the victim because she didn't get the childhood she thought she deserved. Well, who does? I'm sorry. I don't care how much she pretends to be wounded. I will not--I will not cater to a sociopath's feelings.

Jennifer: Julie, just stop. That's enough. For crying out loud, you're talking about jack's daughter.

[Dramatic music]

Chad: You think gwen killed your grandmother, you mean, accidentally?

Abigail: No, I don't mean accidentally. You were there when I told her it wasn't my dad, that it was someone else who turned her mother away, who wrote the checks. She went crazy.

Chad: She was upset.

Abigail: She was upset? She said if she ever found out who did it, she would, and I quote, "kill them". Well, she did find out, and that person is dead, and guess what? They died in her room without any eyewitnesses. Oh, come on, chad, you and i know better than anyone what that woman is capable of.

Chad: I'm not saying that you're wrong. I'm not saying she didn't do it. I'm just saying that there's not any proof.

Abigail: Oh, well, there will be, because I'm taking a page from gwen's book. I'm not gonna let her get away with this. I'm going to make her pay.

Chad: Abby--

Abigail: But first, I'm going to go bury my grandmother. Why! I'm so--

Chad: Stop. I'll go with you. Okay? Let me do this with you.

Sarah: [Yawns]

Xander: Oh, that is just very flattering.

Sarah: I'm so sorry. I feel so sorry. Oh, my gosh. Let me just say that last night was not my dream valentine's day. Instead of being here with you, I was in the or assisting on a triple by-pass.

Xander: At least it was heart-related.

Sarah: Mm-hmm. And endless. [Sighs] When it was all done, I was so tired, I couldn't even go home. I just slept in the on-call room. Let me rephrase that. I laid on a bed in the on-call room. I did not sleep. I did doze off for a minute, but then I had this dream that I was doing surgery and I had a catcher's mitt on my right hand.

Xander: That's awful.

Sarah: Yeah. And the worst part was just thinking about you being here alone, on this nice, comfy double bed with pillows that aren't made of cement. And that's why I yawned.

Xander: You're sleep- deprived.

Sarah: Mm-hmm.

Xander: Did the patient make it?

Sarah: Yeah. Thank you for asking. He did; he's gonna be fine.

Xander: Then it was all worth it, right?

Sarah: Yeah. And actually, no, I wasn't just thinking about the bed. I didn't want you to be here alone after...

Xander: After quitting titan?

Sarah: Yeah, and your family in a way.

Xander: No. You know the kiriakises. Blow-ups just blow over.

Sarah: Mm, 30-40 years. To do that. Do you regret what you did?

Gabi: What happened? Xander said you were the one on the way out.

Philip: Well, as you can see, the news of my demise was greatly exaggerated.

Gabi: And xander is--

Philip: Out on his ear, persona non grata, on the dole.

Gabi: You seem really torn up about all of this.

Philip: I never really was convinced that xander was executive material. It's great seeing you. Don't trip on the way out.

Gabi: I know you probably haven't had time to look at xander's files, but he was very interested in my proposal for the company. He wanted to sign a deal with me.

Philip: That may be true, but whatever agreement you had with xander isn't worth the paper it's printed on. Does scrubbing grease feel like a workout?

Gabi: Xander and I didn't actually sign the deal yet, which is why I'm here. I left a proposal with xander.

Philip: Oh. You want it back?

Gabi: No. No, no, no, no, no. I would love for you to read it. I can--I can wait.

Philip: No need. If xander thought it was a good deal, that's all I need to know.

Gabi: Wait!

Xander: Regrets? I don't know, I--I do hate the thought that philip thinks he won, can just picture him, sitting on that desk, smirking, thinking he's got the world by the spreadsheet.

Sarah: Well, from where I sit, you have the world by the... spreadsheet.

Xander: Couldn't agree more, which is why, even though it was rash, I don't regret my decision. I'm just excited to see what's next.

Sarah: Me too. So before I got called into surgery, I got you your favorite cake. It maybe stale, but, hey, cake for breakfast?

Xander: As tempting as that is, there's something else I'd like to do first.

Gwen: In addition to her professional accomplishments, dr. Horton was a devoted mother.

[Sighs] Well, jennifer, you've decided not to include the part about how your dearest mother destroyed the young girl's life. Decided that her existence was an inconvenience. So, no, I'm not sorry for your loss. If you ask me, abigail was lucky to even have a grandmother to lose in the first place.

[Solemn music]

Abigail: You don't have to go; I know how you felt about her.

Chad: How I felt about her isn't nearly as important as how I feel about you. Let me go with you to the funeral. And then when it's over, I'll walk away, but let me go with you.

Jake: Hey, abigail, I'm really sorry about your grandmother.

Kate: I am, too.

I wasn't expecting condolences from you, kate.

Kate: Abigail, I know we have a terrible history. I regret that. But the truth is, I know that you loved her, and I am very, very sorry for your loss. The--the obituary that your mother wrote was very moving to me. I saw how much she loved her mother and vice versa. That's a beautiful thing.

Abigail: I will tell her. Well, I was just on my way out but, um... are you coming?

Chad: Are you sure?

Abigail: Yeah. My plaque psoriasis...

Jennifer: [Sighs] Sweetheart. I don't blame you. My mother... ah, you had every right to be angry with her. And I'm the one who walked out, I'm the one who left you alone.

Jack: I shouldn't have lost control.

Jennifer: Okay. Can we just-- can we just let it go, please?

Jack: I love you.

Julie: I'm sorry. I am so sorry. Over and over again, I always make things worse.

Doug: Julie didn't get any sleep at all last night.

Jennifer: None of us here are at our best.

[Laughter] Let's just forget about it, okay? But can you all maybe just do me a little favor?

Jack: Anything, anything. You name it.

Jennifer: Can we just not, like, focus on who's to blame for what or...

[Sobbing] Or argue with each other? Can we just... try to be... calm and talk-- talk calmly and just remember how lucky we are...

Julie: We are.

Jennifer: To have each other.

Julie: We are lucky, honey.

Doug: Oh, and jennifer, I'd like to tell you, that piece that you wrote about your mother was so beautiful.

Julie: Yes, yes, it was perfect.

Doug: Yes, and even made me laugh. It reminded me of how fierce laura could get when you were stupid enough to play backgammon with her.

Jack: Especially if there was money involved.

Doug: Oh, yes, yes. I can still hear, uh, "how about it, doug? Five bucks to make it interesting?"

[Laughter]

Julie: I'll always remember your mother at her best. That beautiful lady, the wise doctor who helped so many people. And gave so much love to this family.

Jake: Well, I should get to work. Do you wanna come with?

Sarah: What?

Jake: [Scoffs] You know, you still haven't given me an answer on whether you're gonna come work with me at dimera.

Kate: Because I haven't decided yet.

Jake: You--I figured as such, but here's the thing. Gabi is taking her business to xander. That makes titan even more competitive. I could use your help now more than ever.

Kate: Oh.

Jake: What?

Kate: Actually, do you know there's breaking news at titan?

Jake: What is it?

Kate: Apparently, xander's resigned.

Jake: Wow, so who's gonna be ceo?

Kate: My son, philip.

Jake: Huh. I wonder what means for gabi, since, you know, uh, xander is the one who offered her the deal.

Kate: Yeah. Um, honestly, I don't know.

Jake: All right. Well, we need to get going. I need to get to the office myself or I will be out as ceo. So what do you say? Do you want to carpool?

Kate: Oh, my god. Okay, I need a little more time, just a little more time.

Jake: Little more time?

Kate: Mm-hmm.

Jake: All right. You got it. I'll see you later then. Have a good day.

Kate: Bye.

Jake: Ciao.

Kate: Ciao, baby.

Jake: Ciao, baby.

Kate: [Sighs heavily] Philip, what are you not telling mother?

Sarah: I think I know what you're getting at, and I think that's a great idea. I do, but, what about cake first?

Xander: Actually, first, I want to talk about the future.

Sarah: Okay. Uh, did you decide what you wanna do?

Xander: Career-wise?

Sarah: Mm-hmm.

Xander: I haven't got a clue. But I'll come up with something.

Sarah: You always do.

Xander: I've got a lot of big decisions to make...

Sarah: Mm-hmm.

Xander: But I've already made one.

Sarah: Hm?

Xander: And I'm sure it's the right one.

[Warm music]

Sarah, will you marry me?

Jennifer: Oh, sweetheart, it's okay. Your father's here, and doug and julie have been wonderful. She went to see thomas and charlotte, but she's gonna meet us at the service. I will. I love you. Oh, and I-I-I have to remember to tell you, um, later today, I'm going to go to boston to your uncle mike's, and he and I are going to sort out your grandma's estate, okay? I'll call you from there later tonight. Okay. Bye, jj.

Julie: How is jj doing?

Jennifer: He's okay, I think. I have to think that.

Jack: Sweetheart, it's really-- it's time-- it's time to get going.

Jennifer: Okay. Yes. Right. Let's go. Time to say goodbye.

Jake: Reliving your latest triumph?

Gwen: Oh my!

[Sighs] Jake, you scared me.

Jake: Hmm, I can imagine. I mean, I could be any number of dozens of people who wanna pop out from behind you with a knife, garrote, blunt instrument.

Gwen: That's not funny.

Jake: Yeah. You just lost your sense of humor. May I? So, gwenny, going to the funeral?

Gwen: Of course not.

Jake: Really? I figured you'd wanna gloat.

Gwen: What?

Jake: Wow. That's a new low for you, offing the granny. That's--

Gwen: It was an accident.

Jake: Right. I mean, I now know that abigail spent months in a mental institution because you were the one who was drugging her. And I thought that was as low as you could go. But, boy, was I wrong. You should see her now. You have destroyed her. Chad practically had to pick her up off the ground. You really, really hurt her this time.

Gwen: Why are you talking to me like this?

Jake: How should I talk to somebody who's done terrible things to good, nice people, gwen? I'm sorry, I--I forgot that you're entitled to ruin people's lives because bad things happened to you.

Gwen: I was in hell when she got everything.

Jake: Oh, please, gwenny. Both you and I know you coulda been born a damn princess and you'd still be trash because that's what you are.

Gabi: You don't understand. I--I need this.

Philip: Why?

Gabi: Just so you know, I'm going into business with titan. Xander thought my gabi chic proposal would be a great fit for the company.

Jake: Congrats. Good for you.

Gabi: Thank you. Oh, one more thing. We're gonna run you into the ground. Okay, have a good day. Because I have a million ideas and I need to get my brand out to the public. And this is gonna be as good for titan as it is for me. And just because xander drew up this--this deal doesn't make it a bad deal. I know that you hate him, but you're a kiriakis. Come on, you still-- don't you want to stick it to dimera enterprises?

Philip: I always enjoy that.

Gabi: Yeah. So come on, don't we have a deal?

Kate: Philip, I just heard the good news. What do we have here?

Xander: It's a ring, a diamond ring, an engagement ring. I get why you're not saying anything. I really messed up last time, but I want you to know that everything I did, I--I thought I was doing what was best for you. And I've learned my lesson, sarah, I will never again hurt you the way I hurt you last year. And right now, it just seems the one thing I can do to make my life make sense is ask you to marry me so I can spend the rest of my life trying to make you happy. So what do you say?

[Dramatic music]

Sarah: Um... let's have cake.

[Gentle harp music]

Jack: It was a beautiful ceremony. You ready to go?

Jennifer: People say that the--that the cemetery and the--and the--the funeral, it's supposed make it all real, but it doesn't--doesn't feel real that I'll never see my mom's face again, I'll never hear her voice.

Jack: I know. I know. I know. I know. I know.

Jennifer: [Crying]

Jack: I know. You know, uh, I tell you what. We'll--we'll, um... I'll--I'll take you home. I'm gonna take you home. We don't need to go. I'll just call doug. Everyone there is gonna understand, all right? Come on.

Jennifer: No. No, it's okay. I wanna go. I wanna be with people who knew my mama. People who loved her.

Jack: Yeah, I think it's- that's a really good idea.

Jennifer: Yeah.

Jack: Let's--so let's go.

Jennifer: Okay.

Jack: Okay.

Jennifer: Okay.

Jack: All right. Okay.

Jennifer: I'll be good. I'll be back. Okay.

Abigail: You okay?

Jennifer: Yeah. We're gonna go to julie's place. Are you--are you gonna come?

Abigail: In a bit. I just wanna stay, and I wanna say goodbye.

Jennifer: Okay. Okay.

Jack: I love you, sweetheart. Chad. Let's--

Jennifer: Okay.

[Melancholy music]

Chad: I'll go.

Abigail: Um, fine. I think I would really like it if you stay.

Chad: Okay.

Kate: So are you two going into business with each other?

Philip: Maybe. Do you have a problem with that?

Gabi: Of course she does. Of course she has a problem with that. This is--this is where she tells you not to trust me, that I'm just an opportunist using you for my own ends.

Kate: Well, actually, i wasn't thinking anything like that. I mean, certainly philip is more than capable of making his own decisions. He doesn't need his mother butting in. But you know, if you think it's a--a good idea, I would go for it.

Gabi: Oh, I get it. I know what's going on here. You want me to be in business with philip so I won't take my proposal back to jake.

Kate: Now, why would that matter to me?

Gabi: Because you don't want us working together because you're scared deep down that he still wants me.

Gwen: I will never understand how abigail, who got everything handed to her on a silver bloody platter, has every man she ever met feeling sorry for her.

Jake: You're over here feeling so sorry for yourself that really, sympathy from anybody else would be overkill at this point.

Gwen: I don't feel sorry for myself. I take care of myself.

Jake: Uh-huh, just like you take care of anybody else who gets in your way.

Gwen: You know, why don't you just leave? Better yet, why don't you and chad just go home and arm wrestle over who can--who can dry abigail's tears because, oh, boo-hoo, she's such a poor little thing, she's in so much pain? Well, so am I. Jake, they're dragging my name through mud. And this--this woman--this- this woman who destroyed my life just comes barging into my hotel room. She's hysterical, and she has a go at me, and I try to protect myself, and no one will listen to me. No one would believe my side of the story. Now, I've got the police against me, and the hortons' own-- they put me on the front of the bloody cover, saying that this is--this is foul play, but it was an accident, damn it. It was.

[Cool synth music]

Jake: You're scared. I think it's hitting you that this time, you really, really stepped in it. And this time, you might actually have to pay for something you've done.

Woman: I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Abigail: I just wanted to thank you for being here. It was a really hard day, and I just--I don't know if I would have gotten through it if it weren't for you.

Chad: I know I don't always act like it, but... you and our children mean everything to me.

Abigail: Go be with them. Tell them I'm okay.

Chad: Are you?

Abigail: I have to be for their sake.

Chad: I love you.

[Tender music]

Gwen: I'm not scared. I didn't do anything wrong.

Jake: Really?

Gwen: Really. And I don't need to defend myself to you, because I don't owe you anything, certainly not an explanation.

[Tense music]

Kate: Gabi, if jake wanted anything to do with you, he would have simply made the deal, but he turned you down.

Gabi: Well, he knew there'd be hell to pay when you found out.

Philp: Wow, what an elevated, rational business discussion we're having. She made an interesting offer. I need to look over your proposal to see what's best for the company.

Gabi: Fine, but don't take too long. I'm a very hot property.

[Intriguing music]

Xander: Cake? I asked you to marry me and you want cake?

Sarah: Yes, I want you to get me some cake.

Xander: Is this your gentle way of shooting me down?

Sarah: It's my gentle way of asking you to get me some cake.

Xander: I'm on my knees, unemployed, apparently unengaged. I'm not really in a cake kind of place right now.

Sarah: Can you just open the damn box?

Xander: Well, this is really weird.

[Quirky music]

[Tender music]

Sarah: Well, will you? We are the thrivers.

Xander: Okay. I'll have some cake.

Sarah: You jerk.

Xander: Of course I'll marry you. Don't you remember? I was just on my knees trying to get you to marry me.

Sarah: I know, but I just wanted you to know that it was mutual, that I want this as much as you do.

Xander: Don't think I've ever been this happy.

Sarah: Me neither.

[Squeals]

[Tender music]

Kate: So... do you have any champagne? We could toast this deposition.

Philip: Was she right?

Kate: About what?

Philip: Do you want me to make the deal with gabi to keep her from taking it back to jake because you're scared of them working together again?

Kate: Oh, scared?

Philip: Scared that she'll get him back.

Jake: Hey, sorry. I got tied up, I'm heading to the office now.

[Hangs up]

[Gentle intrigue music]

Jennifer: So, uh, mike said he'd pick me up at the airport.

Jack: That'll be a comfort.

Jennifer: Yeah, yeah, it will be. We have a lot to do, you know. You know, go through my mother's estate, handle all her belongings.

Julie: I thought we should make a toast to your mother. Oh.

Doug: To laura.

Jack: To laura.

Jennifer: To laura.

Abigail: Boy, am I gonna miss you. You always took such good care of me, you know, and I guess I probably should have told you that more when you were here. This will have to do. Thank you. Thank you so much for everything that you've done, you know, not just for me, but for our entire family. You were taken from us way too soon. But I promise you, gwen is not going to get away with what she did to you.

[Tense music]
