Eric: Ha. That smile.
Roman: People said it would, uh, light up a room, but I would argue that it lit up an entire town for a lotta years.
Eric: Amen to that. You okay, Dad?
Roman: Yeah, yeah. You know, Ma said that, uh, she never wanted a sad, depressing funeral. She, uh, she asked me for an upbeat wake--not just a celebration of her life, but her friends and family as well, and we're gonna do our very best to abide by those rules. Oh. Oh, I am so glad to see you. Oh, sweetie.
Claire: Hey, are you sure that this dress is appropriate? It just doesn't feel right.
Ciara: Grandma Caroline said she didn't want us wearing black today.
Claire: No, I know. It just feels so bright and cheery, you know? And I don't.
Ciara: Yeah, well, today isn't about you, Claire.
Claire: I know. I know that.
Claire: Hey, today must be extra-hard on you... not only losing your grandmother but finding out that Ben was arrested and that he tried to kill you.
Ciara: Yeah. That's really hard to believe.
Claire: I know, but I want you to know that whatever you need, I'm here for you, okay? Really.
Hope: Hey, Ted, it's me again. Where are you? I-I-I just-- I'm starting to get a little concerned, because it's not like you not to call me back. Call me.
Grand...Grandpa. Look out for Caroline for us, okay?
Sami: So how are you feeling?
Will: Alive. Which...after last night is no small accomplishment. I think the treatment is working.
Sami: Well, that's good to hear.
Sami: Where's your handsome husband this morning?
Will: You know, I don't know. He was gone when I woke up. But, uh, he, uh, left me a note saying he had some errands to run.
Sami: So you haven't talked to anyone else in the family yet today?
Will: No. Why?
Sami: Well, I have, um, I have some sad news. Somehow I feel like... maybe you already know.
[Knock on door]
Victor: Well, if it isn't the heroic doctor herself. Taking a little victory lap for saving Will's life? Or you looking for a big donation?
Kayla: No. Um, Victor, that's not why I'm here.
Victor: Well, then, to what do I owe the interruption?
Kayla: You don't know, do you?
Victor: Know what?
Kayla: Um... my mother passed away last night.
Male announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the "Days of Our Lives."
Victor: Caroline's gone. How did she pass?
Kayla: Peacefully in her sleep. I think her heart just gave out. I... I'm really sorry to be the one to tell you this. Um, listen, um... we're gonna have a wake today at the pub for her, and I know that you... you might be hesitant to come, given our family history. But I want you to know that you're welcome. And I think it's... I think that's what my mother would want.
Victor: Thank you for the invitation but, uh, I won't be coming.
Kayla: You understand that there...there won't be a funeral. This wake is your only chance to say good-bye.
Victor: I'll say good-bye in my own way. Please give Roman and Kimberly my condolences.
Kayla: I will. If you change your mind, you're welcome.
Victor: I won't. Is there something else?
Kayla: Is there anybody here? Maggie or Brady or somebody?
Victor: They're at an AA meeting. Why?
Kayla: I just... I don't think you should be alone.
Victor: Thank you for your concern, but I'll be fine.
Kayla: I know how much my mother meant to you. I just hope you know how much you meant to her.
Shawn: Hey, you.
Claire: Dad! Oh, my god, it's so good to see you.
Shawn: Good to see you.
Claire: Oh, I'm so glad you're here. Wish Mom could be here.
Shawn: I know, me, too. But you know she had that trial she had to focus on, so she couldn't make it. Hey, sis.
Shawn: How you doing?
Ciara: I'm okay. Just...I wish I had visited grandma one more time in California, but I kept putting it off and off and off, and now it's too late.
Hope: Oh, baby, she always knew how much you loved her. I promise you.
Claire: Dad, I made a really good post about Grandma Caroline. Wanna go see it?
Shawn: Yeah, absolutely.
Hope: Hey, you okay?
Ciara: Mm-hmm. I'm just a little sad.
Hope: Yeah, me too. Me too. I called you last night. We didn't...talk about Ben's arrest.
Ciara: Yeah. And I don't wanna talk about it today, either.
Hope: Okay. I got it. I understand. I'm here for you. You know that. Always. Love you, baby.
Ciara: I love you.
Hope: Our family's everything--everything.
Ciara: Yeah. Yeah, if you can't count on family... who can you count on?
Roman: Your grandma always said you can never have enough friends or chowder.
Eric: Well, she made a lot of both.
Carrie: That she did.
Carrie: Dad, when is Aunt Kim arriving?
Roman: Well, unfortunately, Kim had a little surgery last week and the doctor didn't okay her to fly, so Theresa's staying back there with her.
Carrie: Oh. I hope she's gonna be okay.
Roman: Yeah, sounds like she's gonna be just fine. In fact, we'll video chat with her later on.
Marlena: Ohh... it is so good to see you.
John: Can I have a little of that?
Carrie: John. Oh, my goodness.
John: Oh, sweetheart.
Marlena: We're so glad you're home.
Carrie: Oh, it's so good to be home. Even under these circumstances.
Will: So... the timing of it, if... if Great-Grandma passed before my heart stopped beating--
Sami: They don't know for sure but, um... I think so.
Will: That means I-- I really went into the light. I really saw her. She--she-- she was there. She told me--she told me to fight for my life.
Sami: She sent you home. It was her last gift to the family. She gave you back to us.
Sonny: Oh, good, you're awake!
Will: Wh--what is all this?
Sonny: Well, I thought we could do a little post, you know, wedding celebration celebrating us and our future.
Will: That is so sweet of you.
Sonny: Yeah, here, check out the cake.
Will: Wow, that... that is great. Thank you.
Sonny: What's wrong? Did you get bad news?
Will: Um... my mom was just here and she told me that Great-Grandma Caroline passed away last night.
Sonny: Oh, will, I'm so sorry.
Will: My family is throwing a Irish wake at the pub today.
Sonny: She was such a kind and generous person.
Sonny: Oh, my God.
Will: What? What is it?
Sonny: My Uncle Vic. He loved your great-grandmother so much. It's gonna break his heart.
Hope: Feels so strange for all of us to be here without Caroline. You know, I keep expecting her to come out of the kitchen with a big platter of food, of course yelling at all of us for not eating enough.
Abe: [Chuckles] Well, she will live on through this...sacred place. And through her family.
Roman: And like I told you at the hospital, she never stopped thinking of you as her daughter.
Hope: I never stopped thinking of her as a mom.
[Soft pop music in background]
Carrie: It's so nice to be together... even under these circumstances.
Sami: Yeah. So, um, where's Rex?
Eric: Last-minute hospital emergency.
Sami: [Sighs] Well, normally I'd give him a hard time about that, but he did just save Will's life, so I suppose I'll let it slide.
Carrie: So Will's going to make a full recovery?
Sami: Yeah. Yeah. That's the story.
Eric: Yeah, it's a true miracle.
Hope: No Victor?
Kayla: No, um...I had to break the news to him. He didn't know.
Hope: Oh. He didn't want to be here?
Kayla: He said he wanted to say good-bye in his own way.
Hope: I better check on him.
Kayla: Yeah. Hi.
Marlena: I'm so...I'm so sorry.
Kayla: Thank you. Really, thank you.
John: She's the greatest.
Kayla: Well, she really-- she really loved both of you.
John: So have you, uh, heard from Steve?
Kayla: Yeah. Yeah, he called me last night.
John: Yeah. I'm sorry he couldn't be here.
Roman: All right, can I get your attention up here, please.
[Utensil clatters on bar]
Roman: Listen, I am not gonna ask you to stay quiet long. I promise that, all right? Ma would not stand for it. But I do wanna thank you all for coming out today. And I know that it would do ma's heart good to see the many people that she loved all gathered together in a place that she loved. So grab a seat. Grab a drink. 'Cause we are gonna celebrate the life of the one and only Caroline Brady.
Marlena: Aw, absolutely. Let's do it.
Victor: Shouldn't you be at the wake?
Hope: I was. Kayla said that you wanted to grieve on your own. I can respect that. If that's what you really want.
Victor: Why wouldn't it be?
Hope: Because I know you. It isn't easy for you to reach out to the people you love. Even when you need us most. So I'm here for you. If you want me to be. I'm just here. For you.
Roman: This is how this is gonna work, okay? We got this photo. We're gonna pass it around. When you get the photo, you share a story of Ma. Abe, you mind going first?
Abe: Not at all. Well, uh... I grew up in this town. And I don't remember a minute when Caroline Brady wasn't in my life. And when I became partners with her son, she made me a member of the family... an honorary Brady.
Abe: I didn't realize how important that was until Theo and I lost Lexi. Caroline became my lifeline to the outside world. At least once a week, she would show up on my doorstep with this huge vat of her famous clam chowder.
Abe: And then sometimes she would realize that I needed something more and... she'd just sit and talk. Or she'd just sit. I will love her always for her kindness and her generosity.
John: [Chuckles] I had the great fortune of being able to call Caroline my mother for a few years. Talk about winning the lottery. What a hell of a gift. For no fiercer, more loving woman ever walked the planet. And I also remember when I found out that I was not a part of this amazing family. One of my biggest fears was that I was gonna lose the connection with this woman. And I think she sensed that, because one day we were in the fish market, and she pulls over this lobster crate, and she climbs up on top of it so, you know, we could be eye-to-eye, and she grabbed me by the shoulders and she looked me dead in the eye. She went, "I want you to listen to me. Once I let you into my heart, [Voice breaks] I will never let you go.
Marlena: As all of you here know... Caroline was a woman of tremendous faith. She let that faith guide her in everything that she did, from-- from the way she raised her children to the way she helped Shawn keep the doors open of this amazing place that helped so many people, especially people in need. She was also pretty feisty.
Marlena: From time to time, she would grab a few girlfriends, and she would head to an establishment that was known for having handsome men that would dance in very small outfits.
Marlena: She was a pistol. [Sighs] You'll be missed. You'll be missed.
Victor: Why are you here with me and not with Shawn and Ciara?
Hope: Because I think, um... right now Caroline and Bo want me to be here with you. What's in the box?
Victor: Just some trinkets that I've held on to.
Hope: Can I take a look? [Small laugh] Thank you. A letter from Caroline.
Victor: From long ago. Telling me that one of her children was... not fathered by Shawn Brady, but by me. Changed my life forever.
Hope: Bo's, too.
Ciara: Grandma gave me this rosary when I was a little girl. She said that it got her through the toughest times in her life and that it would do the same for me. And she was right. Holding this rosary whenever I pray, it, uh... it always makes me feel better. It's like Grandma's right there giving me a hug, you know?
Claire: Grandma Caroline was was the best at giving advice. And even when I was doing something that she didn't really approve of at all, she always made sure that she was helping me become a better person rather than judging me. She made me wanna be a better person, too. I wish that Grandma Caroline was still here to guide me. But I will never forget the things that she taught me and the way she made me feel loved.
Shawn: When I was a little kid, traveling all over the world with my parents, and wherever we would end up-- Hong Kong, London, Paris--I would always receive these postcards. It was like magic. "Greetings from Salem." That's what they would say. And then Grandma would write a little note telling me about all the crazy things that are happening here.
Shawn: And she would always end it with "you always have a home here." Those postcards, they reminded me that--that I have a place full of people who love me and that she would always be here for me.
Eric: My, uh, wonderful, feisty, big-hearted grandmother was not just an optimist about the world but...she saw the best. The best in everyone. When I was a kid, right here, I remember her talking to a total stranger who sat alone at the end of this bar... who then became a friend. She always made everyone feel important, connected. You know, all of us who've been affected, changed by her for the better... her legacy lives on.
Carrie: As the oldest granddaughter, I can speak for the others when I say that Grandma was a true role model for us. By example, she taught us how to be strong, independent women and how to value hard work, be compassionate and very kind. And though we can't all live up to those ideals at all times--
Sami: Oh, why are you lookin' over here?
Carrie: Yes, we all have bad days where we fall short--myself included. But we had a lot to live up to and we'll never stop trying.
Sami: Well, Ciara, Claire, if you girls ever find yourselves in some trouble, be sure to ask anyone in the room for good old Aunt Sami's story. Right, Dad? Mom, John?
Marlena: I'm not saying anything.
Roman: Uh, me neither. Me neither.
John: Carry on, carry on.
Sami: I guess I just wanna say this family has been through its up and downs, but Grandma Caroline was there for all of us--for me-- through all of it. [Sniffles] She was there with a bowl of chowder... and often a very stern talking-to. But it was filled with love, not judgment. She was wise and warm, a woman of deep, deep faith but filled with love and humor. A lot of humor, and... and she was tough as nails. And I like to believe that maybe I inherited a little of that from her. I'm gonna miss you so much, grandma. And I really believe that she brought will back to us. And I will be grateful to her forever for that.
[Soft, emotional music]
Kayla: I've been elected to read a message from Frankie and Max. Of course, they sent it together, so I had to give them grief for that.
Kayla: "Caroline saved us. We were each alone in the world, and we were given the gift of a lifetime when she and Shawn adopted us. They not only gave us a place to live, but the greatest family anyone could ever ask for. We will never stop being thankful for the love she gave us." Frankie and Max.
Roman: Well, okay. All right. Guess it's my turn, huh? You know what? I been sitting there listening to everybody talk about what a great person Ma was and, uh, you know, how kind, loving, giving, caring--all of that. And she was all of that. But, uh, as the oldest son, think it's my responsibility to tell you that Ma was not a saint...
Roman: And she would not wanna be canonized as such. She was strong, she was scrappy, she was stubborn, tough. And she did not suffer fools gladly. Even if one of those fools was her own son.
Roman: Um... listen, you all know that Ma and Pop cherished this place. Oh, my God, they loved this place--they loved this place so much and in so many ways... but in particular, one way. 'Cause it brought people together. No matter the age, race, gender, religion, rich, poor-- you were accepted and respected. This was a safe place. When the world out there got to be too tough or way beyond insane, this is where we wanted to be. This is where we felt good. Together. You know, my parents were married 60 years...
Kayla: [Laughs] That's crazy.
Roman: When Pops passed away. And even though Ma and Pop aren't here anymore, the family they created, the love they shared--it's still here. Oh, my God, it is still here. It is everywhere. You can feel it. You can feel it in every bowl of chowder.
Roman: Every floorboard. Every scratch on the bar. And that iconic sign out in front. And let me ask you this: Could there be a better legacy? I don't think so. [Inhales] I love you, Mom.
Victor: I built my entire fortune on the hope that I could win Caroline from Shawn Brady. I didn't account for the life that she had created with Shawn. Took me a long time to accept that. Took me even longer to accept the fact that she'd be better off with him. At least I came away with a... a lasting symbol of our love.
Victor: I miss my son more today than I ever have.
Kayla: Uh...oof. Sami, I have news for you. There were a lot of willful kids in this family way before you came along.
Kayla: But our mom treated us equally. She's tough. She'd kick our butts if we didn't behave. She supported our strengths and she encouraged us to work on our weaknesses. [Small laugh] She was my best friend. And I always knew that she would do anything for me... like try to take the murder rap for me so that I didn't have to go to prison. I love you, Mom. I love your sacrifices. And I love how you loved.
Will: I wish Ari had more time with Grandma Caroline. She probably won't remember her very much when she gets older.
Sonny: Why don't you write a profile on Caroline for "The Spectator"?
Sonny: Yeah. It could be your first piece back.
Will: Hand me my laptop.
Sonny: You're gonna start now?
Will: I already have. Thanks. Oh...gosh. Here we go. [Laughs] Caroline Brady.
Will: A legacy of love.
Hope: Would you like me to stay here with you?
Victor: You've done your good deed, and I appreciate it. You best get back to your family.
Hope: Shawn, Ciara, and Claire are your family too, Victor. We love you. Love you very much.
Victor: Thank you.
Maggie, I love you very much. But Caroline, you are, and always will be, the love of my life.
Kayla: I'd like to propose a toast. With a beer because, you know, that's what my mother would prefer. [Laughs] This old Irish poem was one of her favorites. "Those we love don't go away; they walk beside us every day; unseen and unheard, but always near; still loved and still missed and very dear." My heart is so full today because I know that my mom and my pop are finally reunited in heaven. To Ma.
All: To aM!
John: To Ma!
Roman: To Ma! To Ma!
Shawn: Fate weaves the thread of life with pain... but also with happiness. I mean, darling, that's what we've got to remember, the good times, the happy times, you know, the... the times that nourish your soul and make your love grow stronger.
[Caroline laughs] There it is, that smile.
Shawn: That smile, I just... I love to look at it. You know what it is [Laughs] I like remembering most of all?
Shawn: The first time I met you. The very first time I ever saw you.
