Provided By Suzanne
Julie: Do you think that Eli will be just overwhelmed? I mean, meeting all of the family all at once like this?
Doug: I think he'll be able to handle it very well, my dear.
Hope: Yes, of course he will. I think so too, and you know what, he's gonna be so grateful that you've gone to all this trouble for him.
Julie: Uh-oh. Oh...
Jennifer: What's wrong?
Julie: Well, I made my double chocolate cake. You know, I just assumed that he would like it like you do. But wha--what-- what if he's allergic to chocolate? Or what if he wants to lead a gluten-free life?
Hope: Oh, Julie. [Giggles]
Eli: What if he tells you double chocolate cake is his favorite?
Valerie: Marlena, I know that I hurt a lot of people... not only Eli, but David's family too. But at the time, I truly thought I was doing the right thing.
Marlena: I'm sure that Eli will come to understand all this. But it's so new to him right now. Just give him some time.
Valerie: I'm afraid it's too late. Eli will never get to know his father now and...I just don't know if he'll ever forgive me.
Gabi: Thank you for watching her.
Lucas: Oh, are you kidding me? It's the highlight of my day.
Gabi: I may call you again next week, if that's okay?
Lucas: Yeah, it's fine. You have plans or something? You going outta town?
Gabi: No, I just...I don't know, I don't feel comfortable leaving her at the Kiriakises' with everything that's happening with the families. I may just tell sonny to come over here so he can play with her.
Arianna: Where's Chad?
Gabi: [Small laugh]
[Lounge music plays]
Abigail: So...what do you think?
Chad: Yeah. Thank you.
Chad: But now you're gonna have to edit all my speeches.
Abigail: [Laughs] I would be happy to. But, uh, you know, make it your own. Feel free to go off-script.
Chad: So if I said I wanted to go into like this...proud father, shameless bragging type of thing where I talk about my son being a future baseball star, that is...okay?
Abigail: I think they'd love it. But keep in mind I did almost flunk P.E., So I wouldn't get too pumped about Thomas's athletic abilities.
Chad: I wasn't that...that good at sports either. Well, at least not--not baseball.
Do you know what? You can't help me. Can't help me.
Gabi: Come on, just one try, one last time--trust me. It'll be worth it. It'll change your life.
[Laughing] Hey, where'd you go just now? Jeez.
Chad: Um...I just--I was just thinking about how I-I... I wasn't really a jock. You know, I told you, I did dabble in some sports.
Oh! I forgot.
Chad: Yeah. Well, uh, I'm gonna take another look at this so I don't screw it up.
Abigail: Screw it--come on, no, you're gonna--you're gonna be brilliant.
Chad: Correction--"we" are gonna be brilliant. And I'm--I'm just--I'm so glad the DiMera foundation has the good fortune to be able to give back to the community in--in such a special way. You know, not only do athletics promote an active lifestyle, they...they foster friendships and...and teamwork. You--you're able to create memories that last you a lifetime.
Gabi: Afraid? Come on, try me.
Chad: All right, hotshot. Let's see what ya got. And, uh... [Laughs] Um... it's those life lessons that I was able to learn in team sports that I still rely on today-- commitment, uh... self-discipline... and loyalty.
Claire: All right, here comes the hook...
Claire: And the key change.
Theo: Hey, I thought you had class.
Claire: All right, well, you know, you missed the hook.
Ciara: Professor Lawson got sick, so he canceled.
Claire: Sick? Yeah, right. Probably a hangover.
Claire: What? I mean, word on campus is he's a total alky.
Theo: Okay, well, gossip's wrong.
Claire: [Laughs] It's not gossip if it's true.
Ciara: Hey, Claire, um... remember that talk we were gonna have?
Claire: Oh, right, um... sorry, it's just that Theo, uh, and I are kinda in the middle of something right now, so it might have to wait.
Theo: Oh, no, you guys go ahead.
Claire: What? No, we were listening to music.
Theo: Well, I have that bio quiz this morning, so I should get going anyways. Bye.
Claire: Bye. Okay, this really couldn't wait?
Ciara: No. I have to get something off my chest.
Claire: Okay, look, I'm sorry--if this is about me losing your charger, I'm sorry, and I'll buy you another one as soon as possible.
Ciara: It's not about that.
Claire: Okay, then what did I do now?
Ciara: It's nothing you did. It's me. And you're not gonna like this.
Hope: Okay, it's your turn. Tell us something about you.
Jennifer: Besides the fact that double chocolate cake is your favorite.
Eli: I'm an FBI agent.
Hope: Well, I guess it runs in the family--I'm a detective.
Julie: And so is her boyfriend. And, as a matter of fact, didn't he used to work for the FBI?
Eli: No kidding.
Hope: Yeah. Rafe Hernandez. You'll meet him.
Eli: Listen, I can't wait to meet everyone. Thanks again, Mrs. Williams, for putting this together.
Julie: Mrs. Williams--no. Please call me grandma.
Jennifer: Or he could call you Julie like we do.
Eli: That works. Besides, you're too young to be called grandma, anyway.
Doug: Good call there! [Laughter] Mega brownie points.
Eli: All right, look, let's get back to you guys. I'm still a little confused on how everyone's related. [Laughs] Okay, so...you are Julie's sister... and her daughter?
Hope: [Giggling] I am; I'm her half-sister and step-daughter. My dad married my mom Addie, who was also Julie's mom.
Jennifer: Mm-hmm. And it gets more complicated than that.
Hope: Of course. [Laughter] So...have we scared you off yet?
Eli: I doubt that's gonna happen. Although...I could use a cheat sheet for this family tree.
Hope: Ah, good--we all could.
Doug: Good idea. How 'bout cake?
[Knock on door]
JJ: Hey. Um, if you--you're looking for Lani...
Abe: No, I'm not. We texted. I know she took the afternoon off.
JJ: Right. So...
Abe: I'm looking for you, actually. Bad time?
JJ: No. Uh...I was about to take a break. Sit down. Please. Is there a problem?
Abe: Yeah. [Exhales] There is. You and my daughter.
Ciara: People say that you can pick your friends...but you can't pick your family. And I feel lucky that you and I were both. I just...I hate that things haven't been great between us lately.
Claire: Yeah, I know. Me, too.
Ciara: And maybe...it's because I've been keeping a secret... and I owe it to you to tell you the truth.
Claire: Uh... okay. What is it?
Ciara: Claire... I know that you and Theo are a couple, and I would never do anything to mess that up. But...
Ciara: I still have feelings for Theo.
Gabi: Honey, listen, I know that you love spending time with Chad, but...he has his own family, okay? I'm sure we're gonna see him very soon. Right?
Lucas: Somebody's got a crush?
Lucas: Too young to be interested in older guys. I had no idea that Chad and Ari were so close.
Gabi: Yeah, um, we...we did stay with him during the siege, so she got attached to him... then.
Lucas: I like Chad. He was always good to will. He's a stand-up guy. Although we all had our doubts when Abigail told us she was marrying a DiMera at first, but...I guess so far, so good, right?
Lucas: And I know he loves this one--he adores you.
Lucas: He does!
Gabi: Yeah, he does. Ah, listen, you know what? We have to go. We have to go because we are gonna be late for preschool. So let's go get your backpack and your jacket--
Lucas: I can help.
Lucas: Yeah, I can get things going for ya. You have everything? You need that? Oh...[Murmuring]. Come on. Come on. Come on, let's go.
Chad: Yeah, I, uh, I will, Grigor. Thank you.
Abigail: What was that about?
Chad: Ah, it's just, um... business.
Abigail: It was about those stolen artifacts, wasn't it?
Chad: We were just ironing out a few financials.
Abigail: Chad, you know what I think about that. I mean, if Deimos finds out that you're involved--
Chad: You know what, let's not talk about that. Let's talk about...let's talk about that killer speech you just wrote for me.
Abigail: I didn't write it. I just edited it.
Chad: Whatever you did, it was amazing. And you should ask your--your boss for a new raise.
Abigail: [Giggles] Well, you said you wanted to clear up the DiMera image, so... that's exactly what we're doing. Anybody who heard that press conference would never doubt that you were sincere. It was really awesome.
Chad: Well, I had a good coach.
Abigail: All right, I gotta go talk to these guys, but I'll be right back.
Gabi: All right, let's see. Feet shoulder-width apart. Open up. Relax. Yep. [Laughs]
Chad: So you were--you were really "the hammer" Hernandez?
Gabi: Yes, for the hundredth time, yes.
Chad: You were like a little league legend!
Gabi: Focus, please.
Chad: I'm just saying, if eight-year-old me knew that-- that "the hammer" Hernandez was like this... beautiful... [Murmurs]
Gabi: Okay, come on.
Chad: What were you gonna say?
Gabi: No, you gotta practice! Come on, go, go!
All right... let's see what ya got. Let 'er rip.
[Soft music continues]
[Dramatic musical sting]
Claire: I knew it! No, I knew you wanted Theo back!
Ciara: I don't--I don't want Theo back, I swear.
Claire: Okay, then why would you tell me that you're still into him?
Ciara: I was just trying to be honest. [Exhales]
Claire: Well, are you gonna tell Theo? Are you?!
Ciara: No. I don't know. It--it'd be weird, right?
Ciara: Ah! God! Now it's weird between us. I shouldn't have said anything. I'm sorry. It's just--it's hard living here with you two, you know?
Claire: Okay, well, or you could move out.
Ciara: No! No. I love this place. I just... I wish that you'd be a little bit more sensitive when I'm around.
Claire: Are you kidding me? Seriously, what do you want us to do, sit on opposite ends of the couch? No! He's my boyfriend.
Ciara: Yeah, but you don't have to flaunt it.
Claire: In my own house? You know, fine. Whatever. I'll...try and tone it down a notch.
Ciara: Thank you.
You're not still mad at me, are you?
Claire: I don't know. I guess not. Can't really help how you feel. Look, you just--you really need to find somebody else, okay?
Ciara: What do you think I've been doing going on all those stupid on-line dates?
Claire: Well, I know, but you have to stick with it, 'cause you're not gonna find your happily-ever-after on your first couple of dates. That only happens in movies. Maybe you just need to update your profile or something and add some new pictures.
Claire: I'll even help. 'Cause there's no way... somebody as smart and gorgeous as you should be single, okay? It's gonna be fine.
Ciara: Thanks, Claire. And I meant what I said. I would never do anything to come in between you and Theo.
Claire: [Chuckling] You better not!
Eli: So these are my great- great-grandparents?
Julie: Tom and Alice Horton. Married over 50 years. And theirs was a love...like no other. He was a beloved doctor... and the moral compass to this family. And gram... had the kindest, warmest heart. She was a bit of a spitfire. I'll let you guess which one I take after.
Eli: [Laughs] I have an idea.
Julie: They've been gone a long time now, but their spirits... their spirits are still very much a part of Salem.
I especially feel their presence today...because I know how proud and happy they would be to welcome their great-great grandson into the family. What are you thinking, dear?
Eli: It's just that-- [Small laugh] I don't know, I was just really nervous about today. I mean, I didn't know what to expect, but...everyone's so nice. I feel a real connection to all of you.
Julie: Oh, great. I'm so glad to hear you say that!
Gabi: That was it! Yeah, that was it, that was perfect. Okay, now show me your signs.
Chad: I, um, I-I don't know. I gotta figure out some with the catcher.
Gabi: All right, okay, show me the down and inside.
Chad: It's just...to the side.
Gabi: Yeah. Just do it.
Chad: Oh, do it.
Gabi: Yes. Just do it.
[Gentle music continues]
[Whomp] Perfecto! Perfecto!
Chad: No, no, shucks, it wasn't perfect.
Gabi: Sure, it was.
Abigail: Guess who just worked her magic with that reporter from "the spectator"? And now they're gonna do a front-page feature on the benefit in tomorrow's paper. Chad?
Chad: Hmm? Yeah? Yeah, that's great.
Abigail: What're ya thinking about?
JJ: Look, um... Lani and I, we--we enjoy working together and--and we like each other a lot--
Abe: Look, JJ... don't bother denying it. I know the two of you are involved. Lani told me you were.
JJ: Oh. Well, I wasn't going to deny it. I-I just...
Abe: You were just wondering how much I knew.
JJ: I guess I was.
Abe: Well, as I said... I know the two of you have been dating. And...I told her what I'm going to tell you. I don't approve.
JJ: I see. And that's because...
Abe: I like you, JJ. Just not for my daughter.
JJ: Would you mind... explaining that?
Abe: To put it bluntly... I think she needs... someone more mature.
JJ: You mean older.
Abe: I mean more mature. JJ, you are a good guy. And you're headed in the right direction, and that... that pleases me a lot... since I care about you and your family. But I care... deeply...for my daughter. Which is why I'm hoping that the two of you will respect my opinion on this.
JJ: I do... respect your opinion, Abe. But if you want me to say that I'll back off from Lani... well, I won't do that. Because I know that I can be great for your daughter. I think I already am.
[Abe sighs] Hey...I'm going to prove it to you. Just...give me some time.
Valerie: I see you're getting to know the Hortons.
Julie: We have a lot to catch up on.
Eli: Yeah. Julie... grandma was cool enough to throw me a little party so I can meet the family.
Valerie: A party. How lovely.
Eli: It's invite only.
Valerie: Eli, if you and I--
Eli: Well, we should probably get back, right?
Valerie: Eli, I want to work things out. I'm staying here in Salem.
Abigail: You seem kinda distracted lately.
Chad: I'm not. You know, not--not--not really. Just, uh...all the, uh, all the talk about Salem high, you know, I took a little trip down memory lane.
Abigail: Hmm. Well, it couldn't have been a good trip. I don't wanna bring up the past, but there's everything that happened with me and then... with grace. It's--it's a lot. I don't know how you made it through high school, Chad.
Chad: Just...keep on going. That's all you can do. And...hope you get a--you just get a second chance to turn things around. And I did. I have a healthy son... and a beautiful and extremely talented wife.
Chad: Who... I forgot to give credit to in my speech.
Chad: No, I was gonna tell them that you're the new, uh, PR chief--I'm so sorry.
Abigail: Oh, it's no biggie. You're gonna have so many opportunities.
Chad: I know, but I just-- look, he's still here. I'll just run over...
Abigail: Stop. It's okay. Hey--[Gasps]
Chad: No. No. I... [Laughs] Oh, my God. I have to run home and I have to change my damn suit.
Abigail: No, shh, easy. It's okay. Just relax. I... brought you another suit.
Chad: You did what? You brou--
Abigail: Yeah. In case you, like...split your pants.
Abigail: Because, I mean, I've done it at the gym. It's not easy doing cross-fit with a hoodie tied around your waist, but, um... it's okay.
Chad: I don't--you're a lifesaver. I--[Stammers]
Abigail: I just want this to be perfect. You're gonna be great. Come on!
Chad: Yeah, well, perfection. Great.
Abigail: It's okay. Um...it's in Dario's office [Laughing] If you wanna...
Chad: All right, fine.
Abigail: Wanna go get it.
Chad: Okay, I'll go get it.
Abigail: Okay. I wanna help you but... [Laughs] Okay...
Claire: [Softly] Oh, my God.
Marlena: Claire. Wow. Honey...what's wrong?
Claire: Everything. Everything is wrong. I could just--ugh!
Marlena: Okay. Okay. Tell me.
Claire: You wanna know what's wrong? I will tell you exactly what's wrong--Ciara Brady!
Marlena: All righty. What's happening?
Claire: Okay, so she comes into the apartment this morning, totally interrupting me and Theo, like she always does, and she's like, "Claire, we need to talk." So she basically kicks Theo out of the apartment... and then she says this. She says that she is still into him. Like--what?
Marlena: Okay, okay, slow down, slow down.
Claire: No, no, no, it gets better, I swear. She actually has the nerve to tell me that I need to be more sensitive when she's around because she's jealous or something. I mean, in what universe is that even fair?
Marlena: You know what? I don't care for the tone you're taking with this. I don't think your mother would either.
Claire: I'm--I'm sorry. I just feel very insulted and angry.
Marlena: Listen to me. Look at me. I don't think she was...I don't think she was insulting you. I think she was telling you how she felt. And I imagine that must have been pretty difficult for her.
Claire: Yeah, it just felt like she was putting me on notice or something because she wants him back.
Marlena: Mmm. Did she tell you that?
Claire: Well, no.
Marlena: Well, then maybe you are borrowing trouble that doesn't exist.
Claire: Yeah. Ciara and Theo, they've been friends forever, and it's just very hard to compete with that.
Marlena: Oh, honey, you don't have to compete with that. No, not at all. Look... you are your own person... and your job is to be the best person you can possibly be and-- and also to have an honest relationship with Theo. Okay?
Marlena: And... think about his needs.
Claire: His needs. Yeah.
Claire: Right. Yeah. Yeah! No, I can totally do that. [Exhales] Thank you. Thank you so much, grandma. That was the best advice ever!
Jennifer: Was that Valerie you were talking to?
Julie: Yes, it was.
Eli: How's that for timing?
Jennifer: Well, I had lunch with her not too long ago, and, I mean, before all of this came out. She was being a little bit vague, but I could tell that something was tearing her up inside. And I don't wanna be presumptuous and I don't wanna come between you and your mom in this personal matter, but I really felt like she was just wanting to protect you.
Julie: Protect him? The only person Valerie was trying to protect was herself.
Doug: Cool it , my dear.
Julie: No! Well, she never... she never gave David a chance at all. David would never, ever have turned his back on Eli.
Jennifer: Julie, I'm not...
Julie: No. No.
Jennifer: Trying to justify what she did at all. I just--
Julie: David-- if he had known about Eli's existence, he would have turned his life around. He would have started doing things that would have made his own life better.
Eli: I'm sorry, you guys... I hope my presence isn't gonna make things uncomfortable for everyone.
Jennifer: Of course, not at all.
Lucas: No, no, you know... you know, I kinda get what you're going through. My story isn't that much different from yours. You know, I was a surprise and my mom kept me a secret from my dad too.
Eli: How's your relationship now?
Lucas: Well, she butts in a little too much, but other than that, you know, she's my mom. I'm sure she had a good reason to do what she did, so I chose to forgive her.
Julie: But you...had a chance to know...your father. Eli will never have a chance to know David.
Hope: Not necessarily.
Chad: Sorry, I didn't think--
Gabi: I'm so sorry. You know, I'm gonna go.
Gabi: Are you all--are you okay?
Hope: We're all here for Eli, right? So let's help him get to know his dad... by sharing some family stories. What do you say? Yes?
Hope: Julie? Dad?
Julie: All right. Eli...grandson, you ready to walk down memory lane with us?
Eli: Yeah. Let's do it.
Julie: Oh, yes, at times David could be very, very stubborn. I suppose he got that from me.
Doug: Oh, honey. [Laughing] Come on.
Julie: Anyway... anyway, after the automobile accident, it was the grant family that found your father and took him in. And, of course, that's where he met Valerie. And they started to date. They even became engaged. But it was a time... it was a time when interracial couples...had a risky experience. It was even taboo. They had to deal with a lot of animosity. Not just from strangers either, but from friends, their own families. But to David, love was love... which is the way it should be.
Hope: Exactly, because, uh, love has no color. Your parents, your mom and dad, shared a beautiful love. Just like Gran and grandpa, huh? And you and daddy.
Jennifer: Oh, I so wish that you could have known gram and grandpa. They were...quite a couple.
Eli: Julie was telling me all about them.
Jennifer: Did you tell him about gram's donuts?
[Overlapping chatter, laughter]
Eli: These things are legendary, huh?
Jennifer: Oh, yeah.
Hope: Yes, they are.
Ciara: No Horton gathering's complete without them.
Lucas: So you might wanna take two.
Julie: Or three!
Hope: Oh, my gosh, do you-- wait, everyone, do you remember-- do you remember the time that Gran helped roman escape from prison with "those special" donuts?
Julie: Oh, yes!
Hope: Well, my brother-in-law, he was in prison for a crime he didn't commit. I'll just take these home.
Jennifer: Yes, so gram, she knew that he was innocent, and she was gonna do everything she could...
Jennifer: To get him out.
Julie: And your great-great grandfather wasn't just passionate about medicine. He loved literature. He loved poetry. In fact, he was a poet himself.
Hope: Oh! "Norm de plume"!
Jennifer: Do you remember that?
Hope: You saw those photos?
Eli: Norm de plume?
Julie: Yes! Well, you see, he had written these things, and he wanted to read them at poetry readings, but he didn't want anybody to know it was actually dr. Thomas Horton. So he invented this--I don't know--alter ego and named him norm de plume.
Hope: Someone's gotta have a photo somewhere of that.
Julie: Remember the getup, the black beret, the dark glasses like in the beat, you know, one of the beat poets?
Eli: Sounds like you guys had some pretty interesting times.
Julie: Ah, sure! But it wasn't always polka dots and moonbeams, darling. Remember way, way back when tom had to tell his daughter Marie the man she was dating was actually her brother?
Eli: Wait--her what?
Julie: Yes. Yes. Well, she fell in love with a man named mark. At least, everybody thought his name was mark.
Jennifer: And so...I'm not proud of a lot of things I did when I was younger.
Hope: Like running away.
Jennifer: Mm! One of my finer moments. But I am so grateful that gram and grandpa took me in. They raised me, pretty much.
Julie: You were a little hellion, Jennifer rose!
Jennifer: Was I? Well, you know...how are you gonna be when you find out your mom is locked in a sanitarium and she leaves you on a bus when you're three years old?
Lucas: That'll do it.
Doug: So, Eli, are you still glad that you came to Salem?
Claire: Hey, baby.
Claire: How was your bio quiz?
Theo: It was really hard. I think I missed questions-- hey. I think I missed questions 5 and 16, but that still gives me 85%, and I'm gonna be in the top quarter of my class, so...
Claire: Wow. Sounds good to me.
Claire: Is Ciara here?
Theo: Uh, no, it's just us. So, uh, what did she want to talk to you about?
Claire: Oh, nothing, just stupid, boring girl stuff, whatever. Um...I did have an interesting conversation with my grandma Marlena, though.
Theo: Oh, about what?
Claire: About us.
Theo: Oh. Why?
Claire: I mean, I was just telling her how good things were going between us. I mean, you think things are going good, don't you?
Theo: Yeah, yeah, of course.
Claire: Cool, cool. I mean, I just wanted to make sure, 'cause...I know that I can be...a little bit self-involved sometimes. And my grandma said that if I want this relationship to work, then I should not forget your needs.
Theo: [Laughs] Uh...what needs?
Claire: Well, I think you know what I mean. I mean, you're a guy. And guys have needs. I think that it's time we take our relationship to the next level.
Theo: Uh...so what does-- what does that mean, exactly?
I think...that it's time that we sleep together.
Valerie: [Crying softly]
Abe: Suppose I don't have to ask how things are going.
Valerie: It's obvious, isn't it?
Abe: Wanna talk?
Valerie: Oh, Abe, I just... you know, I'm really glad Eli is getting to know his family. It's just that he and I used to be so close.
Abe: And you liked having him all to yourself.
Valerie: I just don't like feeling like this. I don't like feeling jealous. That's not who I am.
Abe: Of course not. Look...you are a wonderful woman. And a wonderful mother. And you were only doing what you thought was best for Eli.
Valerie: Not according to Julie.
Abe: Well, Julie wasn't there.
Valerie: Abe, I don't know what I'd do without you.
Abe: Hey... I'm not going anywhere. [Chuckles]
Julie: And this is JJ, and this is Jennifer's son. Did you two meet at the memorial?
JJ: Oh, not formally but, uh, good to meet you.
Eli: You too.
Julie: Salem pd. Told ya--law enforcement runs in this family.
JJ: Speak of the devil. Commissioner Raines. I'll be right back.
Doug: You know, Eli, tell me, how is it coming? I mean, it's a lot to process, right?
Eli: You can say that.
Doug: Ha. Well, you're gonna be fine. And your grandmother and I both look forward to helping you climb into the Horton family tree. I mean that.
Eli: Thank you.
Jennifer: Oh, my goodness.
Eli: Excuse me. If I can have everyone's attention. I just wanted to thank you guys for putting this together for me... especially this lady. You really made me feel like a part of this family. And I look forward to getting to know you guys even better.
Hope: The feeling is mutual.
Jennifer: And if there is one thing we Hortons do know is the importance of family.
Jennifer: Welcome to the family! Get rid of that chair!
Jennifer: We're so glad you're here!
Ciara: Welcome to the family.
Gabi: Are you...okay? Are you sure?
Chad: Painfully humiliated.
Gabi: Here, let me, uh--here.
Chad: Oh, thank you, I got--
Gabi: Gimme that here.
Gabi: I'm so sorry. This is--
Chad: Oh, I stubbed my toe.
Gabi: Oh, my gosh, are you okay? Oh!
