Provided By SuzanneClaire: You have to see the selfie that Everly just posted. No, like, I swear, she thinks she's a reality star, just recording every detail of her completely boring life.
Ciara: Claire, why aren't you dressed yet? Did you forget that we have a funeral to go to today?
Claire: Okay, sorry, but, I mean, why do I have to go? David's your first cousin and my second. We never even met.
Ciara: We're not going for him. We're going for Julie, who's got to be in a lot of hell after losing her son! Not that you'd notice, because you only think about yourself.
Claire: Sorry, excuse me?
Ciara: I swear, Claire, you're, like, the most selfish person I know.
Julie: Well, hope, of course I'd love for you to be here, but, darling, if you're feeling ill, you should rest. Yeah, I'll have your father stop by and look in on you later today. Thank you.
Doug: Did I hear you say that hope is not feeling well?
Julie: Uh... food poisoning. She thinks she has food poisoning.
Maggie: Well, the rest of the family is here for you.
Doug: Honey... if you want some alone time at the church, you know, to say a private good-bye to David, I think we need to head on over now.
Julie: I'm not going. Wouldn't be right.
Maggie: What? Honey, why would you say that?
Julie: I don't deserve to go to my son's funeral.
[Soft dramatic music]
Abe: Still working, I see.
Valerie: Oh, yeah. Chad DiMera's doctor asked if I'd review his EKG, make sure there's no arrhythmia.
Abe: I hope he's okay.
Valerie: Yeah, well, I'll soon find out. And then after Chad's exam, uh, I'll turn in my badge, and... my job here in Salem will officially be over.
Abe: [Sighs] Well, I so wish you'd change your mind. But I'm grateful that we reconnected, even if it was because of my faulty heart. [Laughs]
Abe: It was so great getting to know you again.
Valerie: Yeah. Oh, Abe, it's meant a lot to me too, really. But my son misses me, and I miss him too.
Abe: At least let me escort you to David's funeral today.
Valerie: Oh, that won't be necessary.
Abe: You know, I saw how broken up you were when you got the news. You two were close once, and that means today won't be easy. I'd like to be there for you.
Dario: So the doctor said that Gabi's gonna be okay?
Eduardo: Yeah, she just needs, uh, to rest, basically.
Dario: How much does Gabi know about the war between the families?
Eduardo: Enough to know why she was taken as a hostage. We're looking at a new lay of the land here, and we're all gonna have to learn as we go, but--
Kate: How dare you?
Eduardo: Hey, I didn't expect to see--
Kate: Did you really think that I wouldn't figure it out?
Dario: I'm gonna--I'm gonna let you two have some privacy.
Kate: You pretended that we were working together to figure out our next move against Deimos, and the whole time, you were planning with André to kidnap sonny.
Eduardo: I would have told you, but I knew you wouldn't approve.
Kate: Well, you're damn right about that. Because he's my family. Because he could've been killed.
Eduardo: We were never gonna hurt him, Kate.
Kate: They beat him to a bloody pulp.
Eduardo: The guard who did that was out of line. He'll be punished or dismissed. I'm--I'm really sorry it happened. My daughter's life was on the line, as was Chad's. So we made a move. They're safe now, and so is sonny, so... you know, everybody's okay.
Kate: You couldn't be more wrong.
Abigail: Finally. [Laughs]
Abigail: Oh, I was beginning to think you were never gonna wake up.
Abigail: I'm so sorry. I never should have left.
Chad: No, it's okay. Andre said you had to, uh, go check on Thomas and get some rest.
Abigail: No, I mean when I ran away. Chad, the past couple days, I didn't know-- I didn't know if you were dead or alive, and... it just made me think how empty my life would be if you weren't around. I thought, "my God, this-- this is how he felt." I'm sorry.
Valerie: You're so sweet to want to be there for me, but, um, I'm okay.
Abe: You know, you weren't okay before.
Valerie: Honestly, I-I don't know why I took David's death so hard.
Abe: He was your first love.
Valerie: Yeah, but that was years ago. And it's not like I'm still carrying a torch for him or anything.
Abe: Well, I would hope that our relationship is proof of that.
Valerie: Indeed. Hey, listen, um, any chance Theo will be at the services today? I wanted to say good-bye to him.
Abe: Oh, he'll be sad to see you go.
Valerie: I never would have expected that.
Abe: I knew he'd come around.
Valerie: You were right-- about a lot of things. Abe, you're such a great man. I hope you find someone who appreciates that.
Abe: I thought I had.
[Soft dramatic music]
Valerie: Hey, kiddo. Eli, it's mom. Um... I left you a text, um, about my flight. And I was wondering if, uh, you might have some time when I get there for dinner or something. Yeah, let me know. Okay.
Claire: Hey, Ciara, that was really harsh. Why are you being so mean?
Ciara: Grandma Julie's son just died. How do you not understand why we need to be there for her?
Claire: Okay, would you chill? I'm totally going. I was just venting because I think it's really weird that we've never even met the guy.
Ciara: Funerals aren't about who died, Claire. It's about being there for the people that are left behind.
Claire: Hey, do not lecture me!
Ciara: I'm not lecturing you.
Claire: You might be my aunt, but that doesn't mean--
Theo: Hey! Hey, hey, hey, hey! To your corners.
Claire: No, she started it!
Ciara: She started it!
Abigail: Can you ever forgive me?
Chad: I already have. The truth is, I'm-- I think I'm the one that needs some forgiveness.
Valerie: Chad DiMera? Hi, I'm dr. Valerie grant.
Chad: Uh, yeah. Yes, hi. Um, my nephew Theo actually has told me all about you. Said you've been a real bright spot in his and Abe's life.
Valerie: Oh, that's very kind. I've enjoyed spending time with them too.
Chad: But look, um, actually, sorry, I was in--
Abigail: I'm Chad's wife, Abigail.
Valerie: Oh, very nice to meet you.
Abigail: Yeah, you too.
Valerie: Well, I'm gonna need to examine your husband. You can stay if you'd like to.
Abigail: No, I'll just-- I'll wait outside. I'll be right back.
Chad: Wait, Abby, Abby. We're gonna-- we'll finish this conversation.
Valerie: You ready? Okay.
Kate: I knew I was right to keep you at arm's length. I just wish I hadn't started opening my heart to you again.
Eduardo: Kate... I'm really, really sorry. I knew that I'd have to pay for this. I didn't do it lightly. Please bear in mind, you'd have done the same thing in my shoes. You know better than anyone, some problems don't have simple solutions. I didn't mean to disrespect you. It doesn't change how I feel about you. It doesn't change my belief that the two of us are destined to be together.
Before we hit the beach, I've gotta hit the loo. blood between the families is only gonna get worse?
JJ: Definitely. But the next time this kind of fighting goes on, I'm gonna make it my mission not to let them skate.
Lani: At least no one died or was seriously injured. Speaking of which, how's Gabi?
JJ: I hear she's fine.
Lani: You haven't been to see her?
JJ: No reason to.
Lani: Does she know that without you, she and Chad wouldn't have made it?
JJ: Without both of us, you mean? You and me, we make a pretty good team.
Lani: We made a good team. Past tense.
JJ: So you're still going back to Miami?
Lani: I was only on loan for this case, remember?
JJ: I heard commissioner Brady was gonna offer you a permanent post.
Lani: Word travels fast.
JJ: So he did offer it? What'd you say?
Lani: That I appreciated being considered, but I made a life for myself in Miami, and-- wait a minute. How did you hear about it?
JJ: I'm the one who suggested you.
Ciara: I happen to think it's rude, not to mention unforgivable, to show up late to a funeral, especially when it's your family.
Claire: No, no, what's rude is you acting like I don't even care about grandma Julie.
Ciara: I never said that.
Claire: Yes, you said that I only thought about myself.
Ciara: Because you do!
Claire: Hey, do not let her speak to me like this!
Theo: I'm not. She just did.
Ciara: So Theo has to defend you now?
Claire: Okay, well, he is my boyfriend.
Ciara: Right. Well, I'm done here. If you guys decide to go, I'll see you at the pub.
Claire: Oh, my God. I'm starting to think living with Ciara wasn't such a good idea.
Theo: Friends are supposed get along, Claire. What happened?
Claire: Whatever happened, it's Ciara's problem, not mine. Just remind me to get a picture of us after I change, okay?
Doug: Honey, of course you deserve to be at your son's funeral. He's your son!
Julie: What kind of a mother doesn't see her child from one year's end to the next?
Maggie: It wasn't your fault, Julie. David never put down stakes long enough for anyone to visit. And every time you thought he was settled, he'd write and say he was moving.
Julie: Well, maybe he moved because he didn't want me to visit.
Julie: I wouldn't blame him for that. I gave him up!
Doug: For God sakes, you were a teenager.
Maggie: And the baby's father had died.
Julie: It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. I wasn't there those first few years, and that's the time when the baby needs the mother more than anybody else in the whole world. And when I finally did get him back, the bond was lost, lost forever.
Maggie: I don't believe that, Julie. Daniel and I didn't have any idea that we were mother and son. But when we found out, it was as if the connection had always been there. And I know that was the same way for you and David.
Doug: You listen to Maggie, sweetheart. She knows what you've been through.
Maggie: And what you're going through today-- losing a child. It's as if a piece of your heart has been torn out, and all you want is for one more minute to make up for all the ones that you've missed.
Julie: Maggie, it was different for you and Daniel. Different for me and David. I felt that David resented the fact I gave him up for adoption.
Doug: You and David had many happy years together. Don't discount that.
Julie: Yeah, but it was never the same after he left Salem. I made you the center of my life. I always thought, "I'll have plenty of time. We'll work things out." Every time I reached out to him, our personalities clashed. You remember. And I told myself, "well, we'll mellow with age, and then we'll reconnect." Now he's gone. How can I grieve in front of my family and my friends? Everybody knows that I let my son down in the worst possible way.
Valerie: Well, you'll be happy to know your husband's heart is strong as ever.
Abigail: That's great.
Valerie: You get some rest now, okay?
Abigail: What do you think? You want to sleep?
Chad: No, not yet. Andre said that you were here all night.
Abigail: Yeah. Yeah, I was. I wasn't gonna leave you.
Chad: And you're the one that found us. I heard you literally breathed life back into me.
Abigail: Chad, I would do anything for you. I mean, it was scary. I'm not gonna lie. Seeing you just laying there, still and not breathing, was-- it was awful.
Chad: Yeah. You know, we, um-- we had to do everything we could to stay warm. So when you came in and you found us--
Abigail: No, Chad, it-- I'm actually really glad that you guys had each other. If you'd didn't, then-- I don't even want to think about at. I just-- I just want to move on.
Chad: Yeah, but I don't think I can move on, um, without telling you that...
Abigail: Chad, no, no, come on. It's o--
Chad: I kissed her. When we were in there. [Exhales deeply]
Julie: Oh, honey.
Ciara: Maggie said that you're not sure about going to the funeral.
Julie: I don't know, honey. I just don't--I-- I don't think I was a very good mother to my son.
Ciara: But just because you're a mom doesn't mean that you're always gonna be there for them. I mean, I was lucky. When my mom wasn't there, I had you. And you've always been there for me and my family. I mean, when my mom was gone and I was lost, you listened to me, and you gave me advice. The same way you did for my mom when she was growing up. You're always the one that we can count on.
Julie: Oh, honey.
Julie: Hi, sweetie.
Claire: I am so sorry, grandma.
Julie: Thank you.
Ciara: Grandma's not sure she wants to go to the funeral. She thinks she wasn't there enough for David.
Claire: No, I mean, it's not like you ever forgot about him. You were always talking about him. And every year, you would put his ornament on the Christmas tree.
Julie: Well... I should've insisted he come home for Christmas.
Ciara: Well, he knew he was welcome.
Claire: Right, and I never even met him, so I was kind of counting on you to tell me some stories about him at the funeral.
Ciara: Well, why don't we go to the church? That way, everyone can have a chance to hear about him.
Julie: My girls. All right. All right.
Valerie: We fought so hard to be together. You'd think, after everything we went through, all the times we swore our love would last and we'd prevail against everything, we'd make sure we'd find a way to make sure that it did. But we didn't. David, I'm so sorry. I should have told you and Eli the truth.
Dario: Things get any better with Kate?
Eduardo: Actually, I don't think they did.
Dario: Sorry to hear that. I know you were hoping for a second chance.
Eduardo: Yeah, it's not over. It's gonna be a steep climb with her, but... she is so worth it.
Dario: I guess some women get under your skin.
Eduardo: Yeah, they do. Bottom line is, your sister's okay... and thanks in large part to you.
Dario: Yeah, I was-- I was relieved that Abigail and I found her and Chad, but... if I had known that I would have found them in each other's arms, I would've tried to at least spare Abigail.
Eduardo: So you're... very concerned about Abigail. It's not the first time. Something going on between the two of you?
Dario: She's my friend.
Eduardo: Is that all?
Dario: And she's married.
Eduardo: Yeah, she is. So I'll ask you again.
Dario: I don't want to see my friends get hurt. That's it.
Chad: And the--the thing about the kiss--
Abigail: I don't really need--
Chad: Stop. Please, listen to me. Stop. I was--I was--I was cold, and I was--I was terrified, and I wasn't thinking straight, and I did not think I was gonna make it out of there alive. And I just...
Abigail: Chad, I have something to admit to you too.
Abigail: When Dario and I came in there and I found you and Gabi in each other's arms, I thought... maybe something more had happened.
Chad: More? Than kiss--no. Than kissing? No, nothing.
Abigail: The doctor said that the hypothermia messes with your brain and it makes you do things that, you know, you wouldn't normally do, so... I know that you're committed to me and to Thomas, so... I'm good. We're good. I'm gonna go check on Thomas.
Abigail: Okay, I'll be right back.
Lani: You wanted me to stay?
JJ: I did. We've been working really well together, and... I figured it would be nice for you to be near family.
Lani: I'll think about it. That's not a yes.
JJ: Fair enough. Oof, I better get running. With my mom out of town on assignment and Abigail at the hospital with Chad, I'm the family rep.
Lani: I bet my Dad'll be there. I'd like to come and show my support. You mind if I tag along?
JJ: Not at all.
Valerie: Hey. When did you get here?
Abe: Oh, just now. You were having a private moment. I can step away.
Valerie: No, no, it's okay. I'm finished.
[Soft dramatic music]
Julie: Oh, Valerie. Thank you. Thank you for being here. It would've meant the world to David. He loved you so.
Valerie: I loved him too.
Julie: If the two of you had just stayed together, how different things might've been.
Abe: Julie. I'm so sorry for your loss.
Julie: Oh, Abe.
Abigail: "In loving memory." You did this so that you could move on with Gabi, didn't you, Chad? God, I'm so stupid. I don't know what I was thinking. Why did I ever let you think that I was dead? I just... how could I ever expect you to-- to actually still love me after I was gone? I-- [Groans angrily]
Dario: Hey, hey, hey, hey.
[Somber classical music playing]
Julie: I may not have been much of a mother. I wasn't a mother at all in the beginning. Whether you felt it or not then, I did love you, David. I've always loved you, David. I pray, somehow, in your heart, you knew that.
Thank you. Thank you for making me come, for pushing me. Thank Maggie and the girls. I'm glad I came.
Doug: We knew you would be, honey.
Ciara: Thanks for helping to get Julie to come.
Claire: Well, why wouldn't I, you know? I care about my family just like you do.
Ciara: I know. And what I said earlier about you only thinking about yourself, that was mean. I'm sorry.
Claire: Well, I wasn't exactly nice, so I'm sorry too.
Theo: Now you guys are talking like friends.
Theo: Hey. Dad's gonna be really happy you're here. He's really upset.
Lani: Because of David?
Theo: No, because of Valerie. She's leaving today to go back to her life in D.C.
Lani: Too bad she can't have a life here.
JJ: She can. All she has to do is say yes.
Maggie: Your being here means so much to Julie.
Valerie: What David and I shared was lifetimes ago, but I definitely wanted to be here to pay my respects.
Maggie: A lifetime ago or not, you were a very important person to him. I remember.
Valerie: And, um, I was-- I was really sorry to hear about your son.
Maggie: Daniel was a good man. And I was very lucky to have him to be a part of my life even for a little while. And Abe tells me that-- that you have a son.
Valerie: I do.
Maggie: I'd love to see a picture.
Valerie: I don't, um-- I don't carry photos on my phone.
Valerie: There's Theo. I wanted to be sure to say good-bye to him before I left. Excuse me.
Maggie: Sure. Such a lovely woman. It's too bad she has to leave Salem.
Abe: Yes. Yes, it is.
[Soft dramatic music]
Abigail: I thought that I was okay, and then I saw the statue and just--
Dario: Yeah, yeah, yeah. It wasn't the statue. When you saw Chad and Gabi wrapped up in each other's arms, that, um-- that had to hurt.
Abigail: I mean, Chad, he said it was the hypothermia.
Dario: Did you believe him?
Abigail: Yeah. Until he told me that he kissed Gabi. You're not surprised.
Dario: No, I'm not.
Abigail: Is it because you know something? Dario, you've got to tell me.
Dario: When I was in the hospital room with Chad, I heard him call out Gabi's name in his sleep.
Abigail: It's funny. 'Cause I heard Gabi call out Chad's.
Dario: You think your marriage is in trouble?
Abigail: But if it is, it's my fault.
Abigail: Yeah. Dario, I disappeared. I left. I made my husband grieve for me for months. I mean, that man never would have done that if he thought there was the slightest chance that I would come back. But, I mean, he moved on. What--but-- I can't just expect him to drop all of this with Gabi like it was nothing. [Sighs] Oh, God. I don't know. I just-- maybe it's too late for me and Chad. [Sighs] What do I do? God. Dario, what do I do? I mean, do I just let him go? (Vo) if you have type 2 diabetes,
[Echoing] My... yeah, yeah for once in my life
Abigail: You remember. I can see it in your eyes. That was the happiest that I had been in... forever. And Thomas had just been born. We thought that we were finally free of Ben. Just free to be together.
I feel fine because you're mine
Abigail: Chad, we can get back everything that we lost.
We're in the light dancing in the light
Abigail: Come on.
Abigail: Come on.
Holding you tight
tripping in the light
my world is gonna shine
because you're mine
lucky, oh, am I
because you're mine
Dario: What do you want to do?
Abigail: Well, I don't want to just let him go, but... I mean, if he really wants to be with Gabi, then I--
Dario: Yeah, but you don't know if that's the case.
Abigail: But, I mean, if it is, isn't it the right thing for me to do to set him free?
Dario: You still love him, don't you?
Abigail: I can't even imagine my life without him. But if he's pretending with me and he really wants to be with Gabi, Dario, what am I supposed to do?
Dario: I can't imagine anyone wanting to leave someone like you. And if he doesn't love you, then, well, he doesn't deserve you.
Abigail: You're sweet to say that.
Dario: I mean it. And as much as I...don't want to see my sister hurt, I have a strong feeling he's gonna forget about her.
Abigail: You really think so?
Dario: Yeah. Maybe not now, but... at some point, he will.
Abigail: That's exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks so much for being such a good friend.
[Soft dramatic music]
Maggie: Please, everyone, take your seats. The service is about to begin.
Valerie: Yes, I will-- I will check in with dr. Brodman to see how you're doing. It was very nice being your doctor too. Yes, I will. Good-bye, now.
Valerie: Eli. What are you doing here?
Eli: I came to bury my father.
