Eduardo: Hey. I'm recording my diary.
Kate: [Shushing] Uh-huh. [Speaking mandarin] Zhe, zhe.
Eduardo: [Murmuring indistinctly]
Kate: Um... could you-- could you stop? Please? No, no, not you. So sorry. [Speaking mandarin] Zhe. Mm. [Stammers] Look, I will just call you back. [Speaking mandarin] Buh-bye.
Eduardo: You never know what you're going to get.
Kate: I was just talking to Mr. Wu, who is one of the richest, most powerful men in Asia.
Eduardo: And you hung up on him?
Kate: I had to. I'm gonna call him back because you wouldn't stop with me.
Eduardo: Oh. Yeah.
Eduardo: Apologies for that.
Dario: So what did you think?
Blanca: I think you're gonna end up very happy. The club needed some repairs and it's gonna be the hottest place in Salem when you're done.
Dario: It will be if you're there.
Blanca: [Laughs] Flattery will get you everywhere.
Dario: I was hoping you would say that.
Kayla: Thanks, Kelly. Keep me posted, all right? And please tell Theresa that I'll be in in a little while to see her. Thanks.
Steve: Hey, babe.
Kayla: Hi. Hi.
Steve: How's Theresa doing?
Kayla: Well, she's out of danger. She's awake and, you know, she's--she's feeling a little bit better.
Kayla: Yeah, I pulled some strings and I got Kelly Macklin to be her nurse. You know, there are still nurses who are less than sympathetic to overdose cases. Uh, you know, my family, I just...
Steve: Sorry I was late. I was on the phone with john.
Kayla: Did he come up with anything?
Steve: No, no, nothing yet. But he's doing his damnedest. He was worried about not being in court today, but I told him to just keep doing what he's doing. Hey. You remember, no matter what happens today, nobody's giving up on hope.
Kayla: Right. You know-- and I'm optimistic that Justin is gonna be able to get the death penalty off the table.
Steve: I want him to keep her out of prison altogether. Cops aren't exactly popular in there.
Kayla: Tell me about it. The last time she was in prison, she was nearly killed.
Rafe: You should try and eat something. It's gonna be a long day.
Hope: It's really sweet, but I can't. Thank you, though.
Rafe: I do have some good news.
Hope: That's a change.
Rafe: Yeah, well, André came through. And the DA is gonna drop the charges--framing of André, the conspiracy, the fraud. Trask agreed to throw 'em all out.
Hope: That's great.
Hope: So I only have one charge. The one that could get me the death sentence.
Rafe: Well, I think it's potentially because she feels she doesn't have a strong case.
Hope: Or because maybe she's so sure she only needs one charge. It's murder, Rafe.
Rafe: No, don't. Do not despair. Don't give up hope.
Hope: I'm not. I'M... I can't, not for Ciara, not for Shawn, not for--
Rafe: Not for all the people who love you. Okay, listen to me. Listen. Hey. Look at me. Justin is gonna get the death penalty thrown out. And then he's gonna go to work and he's gonna work on reducing your prison sentence.
Hope: Rafe, there's just so much he can do. I killed a man.
Hope: And I confessed to it.
Rafe: Okay, yes, but under wildly extenuating circumstances. And if the judge doesn't see it that way, and if she doesn't rule that way, then Justin is gonna get it thrown out, okay? He's gonna file for an appeal. He is not giving up on you.
Shawn: And neither am I.
Julie: We just have to focus on how good Justin is in court.
Doug: Not gonna matter how good Justin is in court. Damned judge is in the DiMera's pocket.
Julie: Shh! What if Ciara heard you? Darling, she just needs to know we have no doubts that-- that her mother will be set free.
Doug: Yeah, but I have doubts. I mean, she-- she killed that son of a bitch.
Julie: Well, he certainly had it coming.
Doug: Yes, but that is not a defense. Hope is a cop. She will be held to a higher standard.
Julie: Doug, please. Please don't. Ciara just needs to know that we are confident. And I am confident because I really don't believe God would let Stefano DiMera win.
Ciara: Let's hope you're right about that.
Justin: Trask and Fitzpatrick agreed to drop the related charges.
Roman: Yeah, because that vindictive little worm backed down. How the hell did you get him to do that?
Justin: In court, you may want to refer to him as André DiMera.
Roman: [Chuckles] Okay. All right, whatever. So how did you manage to get André DiMera to drop the charges?
Justin: With a cool, logical argument. And the fact that the little vindictive worm knows that if he went after the whole Salem PD, he might be overreaching.
Roman: So you're sure he won't go back on his word?
Justin: Of course not. He's a DiMera. But it's on the record now. It will hurt his case and help ours if he reneges now. I'm just worried about Trask. If she uses this case to turn her temporary DA job into a more permanent one.
Roman: Don't let that happen. Stop her. All right, bottom line, what are hope's chances?
Justin: I'm what you'd call cautiously optimistic.
Roman: How are you gonna handle that confession?
Justin: I am not going to contest that hope shot Stefano. I'm going to contest that it's murder one. In all of this, hope was a victim too. I'll hit that hard.
Hope: You didn't have to come, honey.
Shawn: You're kidding me with that, right?
Hope: You looked exhausted. Just flew halfway around the world.
Shawn: I did exactly what you would do for me if I needed you.
Hope: I never wanted you to know. Or to find out like this. I murdered a man.
Shawn: Well, it wasn't murder. This is Stefano DiMera. All right, he wasn't a man. He was an animal.
Hope: You sound like your father.
Shawn: You know, in my mind, you didn't do anything wrong. How many years has he tortured you and our entire family? After dad died, you were crazy with grief because you thought that Stefano was responsible. I mean... anybody would have done the same thing.
Hope: I'm glad you feel that way.
Shawn: More importantly, so does Justin.
Hope: You spoke to him?
Shawn: We've been emailing. Mom, his is so smart, and he is good in a courtroom. And he's gonna make sure that that judge sees what happened clearly--just the way that I do.
Hope: I don't know what's going to happen today. Thank God you're here.
Kate: What are you doing here?
In an arguably feeble kind of way, I suppose.
Kate: Well, you are a lot of things, but you are certainly not feeble.
Kate: Shouldn't you be out building your big, mysterious empire?
Eduardo: All work and no play? I don't think so. And apparently, you've forgotten how hungry you are, and that we should actually be out eating right now and talking and drinking. Kate: [Laughs] But I have to work to do. I really do.
Eduardo: Yeah, exactly. There's statistical evidence that alcohol increases language proficiency. A couple of bloody Marys and Mr. Wu will think you were born in Beijing.
Kate: Well, I have always looked for ways to improve my proficiency.
Eduardo: Me too.
Roman: Hey. How's mom doing?
Marlena: She is the definition of "stoic." She's up there working on her quilting and believes the entire thing is in god's capable hands.
Roman: Well, if that is the case, I sure wish God was sitting on that bench.
Roman: You getting ready to go down to the courthouse?
Marlena: I am. I've been asked to file a report talking about hope's mental state at the time of the shooting. And I keep stressing that someone who was that traumatized-- especially if they think they're in danger of losing their lives-- might not really have any awareness of their actions. I mean, Stefano was tormenting her. Maybe... I don't know, maybe she just plain snapped.
Roman: Well, you know who knew she was close to the edge: DiMera. And I guarantee you he was deliberately pushing her buttons--I mean, you know how that pig loved to gloat.
Marlena: Maybe he was so busy tormenting her, he didn't realize how close to the edge she really was.
Roman: Yeah, God. I can't believe somebody didn't kill him before. Hell, I came close a couple times myself.
Marlena: Lot of people felt that way. I, myself, shot him.
Roman: Yes, you did. You know, this is the one time I wish he would come back from the dead. I would make that judge spend an hour with him. And there's not a doubt in my mind she would end up giving hope a medal. I'll see you down there.
Adrienne: You sure you're okay to cover the trial?
Jennifer: Yeah. I'm a reporter; that's my job.
Adrienne: Jennifer, it's gonna be hard watching hope go through all this.
Jennifer: But look, seeing the way "the spectator" has handled this story so far, I am going to personally make sure that the whole story gets told.
Adrienne: Okay. But if you have a change of heart, don't even think twice about calling in another reporter.
Jennifer: Thank you. I really should get going, actually.
Adrienne: Yeah, actually, I'll see you there. I've gotta make some calls about the wedding.
Jennifer: Oh, right! Some wedding day, huh?
Adrienne: [Laughs] No... it's--it's okay, really.
Jennifer: No, it's not okay. I mean, this is the day where all the attention should be on you, and now...
Adrienne: No, you know what? I-I'm good with not having all the attention, really. And so is Lucas.
Jennifer: Really? On your wedding day?
Adrienne: Yes. I mean, I'm sure people will pay enough attention to us, but they're gonna be preoccupied and worried about hope. And, you know, for Lucas and me, it's not about the wedding. I mean, even though, of course, we wanna have our family and friends there to celebrate with us, but.. for us, it's about the life we're gonna have together.
Jennifer: Have I told you how lucky my brother is?
Adrienne: I'm the lucky one.
Jennifer: No. He's luckier. Just don't ever tell him I told you that.
Adrienne: [Laughs] Won't breathe a word.
Jennifer: But I mean it. I don't think that he has ever been with a woman that is so loving and so kind. And you really care about his happiness more than your own.
Adrienne: I care about my happiness, believe me. I'm not as selfless as you think.
Jennifer: Oh, good. I'm really glad to hear that, actually. Just make sure that my brother treats you right.
Jennifer: Your brother treats me very well. He makes me feel like... I hung the moon.
Jennifer: Didn't you?
Adrienne: Oh, hmm!
Adrienne: Actually, Lucas is perfect for me. In every way.
Jennifer: I'm so happy for the two of you. Really.
Adrienne: Jennifer, that means so much to me.
Jennifer: I love you.
Adrienne: Made me all teary!
Adrienne: I'm just gonna run. I gotta make a couple calls.
Jennifer: Yes, you have things to do.
Adrienne: Thank you.
[Phone line trills]
Adrienne: Lucas, hi, it's me. Listen, I'm on my way to the courthouse and I'm gonna have to turn off my cell phone. Could you please double check on the flowers for me? Okay, babe? [Sighs] You know, it's so weird. I can't believe I'm thinking about flowers when hope could be facing the death penalty. See you later.
Justin: That's Salem for you. It never rains, but it pours.
Adrienne: Hey. How are you doing?
Adrienne: Even after all those years married, I still can't tell when you're nervous.
Justin: Well, part of the job is always look like you know you're going to win.
Adrienne: Is it an act? Does hope have a chance?
Justin: I think she has a good chance.
Adrienne: Well, I know she has a great lawyer. The best.
Justin: Thank you.
Adrienne: Listen, I want you to know something. Even after everything that's happened, you know, our disagreements lately, I want you to know how very proud I am of you. And how grateful that you're doing this for hope.
Justin: Well, if I was nervous, I'm not now. Thank you for that vote of confidence.
Adrienne: Well, it's getting to be about that time, I think.
Justin: Would you... like to walk to the courthouse?
Adrienne: Yes. I'd love to. [Laughs]
Shawn: So belle and I agreed that it would be best that I stay here for the time being to make sure that Claire and Ciara are okay.
Hope: Honey, Shawn-Douglas, I love you. I don't want you putting your life on hold for me. After I'm sentenced--
Rafe: Hold on a second. Just...why don't we just get through today?
Blanca: Okay, so, you know how you ordered this coffee for me, and you got it exactly the way I like it?
Dario: Yeah, I remember how you ordered it. You'll find I'm... I'm a very attentive person.
Blanca: Hmm. Well, that could be very sweet... or kind of creepy.
Dario: Oh, no, no, no. It's sweet. There's nothing creepy about me. Do you want to see my insect collection?
Dario: Something bothering you?
Blanca: Well, I just... just wonder if this isn't going too fast.
Dario: No. What's bothering you?
Blanca: Well, it was-- it was very nice that you stood up to Guillermo, but like I said, after being with a guy like that, I really need to take my time. You know, he seemed like a nice guy at the beginning too.
Dario: Look, I get it. And we can take things slow. That's--that's fine. I'm not looking to settle down. I mean, I'm still trying to figure out what it means to be in this new business with my dad.
Blanca: New business? There's something else besides TBD?
Eduardo: My plan for the renovated club is that it'll be a front for this new venture. Be a delicate process. I can't think of a better person to handle it than you.
Dario: He's just thinking about expanding the club. My dad thinks big.
Eduardo: Yes, I do. And I knew that with Dario on board, the sky would be the limit.
Julie: Ciara, why don't you and your grandfather go in and get a seat? I just need to talk to Jennifer, just for a minute.
Jennifer: Okay. Hang in there, okay?
Julie: Look, I know you've been researching everything. Is there any way that hope can avoid this death penalty?
Jennifer: Well, Julie, she confessed, so it shows that she has remorse, and she wants to pay for what she did.
Julie: So the judge can reduce her sentence?
Jennifer: Yes, she has the power to do that. The only problem is, the judge also has financial ties to the DiMera family.
Julie: Well, she should have recused herself.
Jennifer: Right, but... she hasn't done that. But we know Justin. We know that he is going to work every single angle that he has.
Adrienne: That's right. I hate that hope is going through this, but she could not have a better lawyer. Justin will watch out for her, believe me. I'm gonna go inside.
Julie: Wow. For a lady that's marrying somebody else this afternoon, she's really bullish on her ex-husband.
Jennifer: Well, I hope she's right. I mean, hope's future is in Justin's hands.
Rafe: You ready to go?
Hope: [Laughs weakly] I don't have much of a choice, do I?
Rafe: I'm so sorry.
Hope: For what?
Hope: No. For doing any and every thing you possibly could to help me?
Rafe: No, no, I saw... I didn't do anything to stop you, that's what I didn't do.
Hope: That's not true. You did everything you could. But I wouldn't listen. Stop worrying. I took matters into my own hands. Stefano pushed me into a corner.
Rafe: You were suffering.
Hope: I should have known better... don't you see? Stefano won. Even if I don't get the death penalty, he won.
Detective Brady? It's time.
Trask: How does it feel to be back on this side of the courtroom?
Justin: Fine. After all, the last time you and I were in this position, my client went free.
Trask: Not this time, counselor.
Adrienne: You are gonna pulverize that woman. And if you don't, I will. Literally.
Justin: I wish you weren't so passive.
Adrienne: You get 'em, counselor. Get 'em.
Jennifer: I am so glad that you and Justin worked things out.
Adrienne: I am too. He sure doesn't need any distractions, certainly not today. Look at him, calm as a cucumber.
Jennifer: Yeah. He's a machine.
Adrienne: Well, nobody knows what he feels like when he loses, when he doesn't save the day. Nobody but me knows that he's harder on himself than anyone.
Dario: Hey, you guys.
Eduardo: Hey, Blanca.
Dario: Want to join us?
Kate: Uh... you know, I don't think so. We'll find a table of our own. We don't wanna disturb you.
[Cell phone ringing]
Kate: Uh, from Wu. I have to take it. Excuse me.
Eduardo: Yeah. Actually, I think it'd be nice if we did join you. If there's no objection.
Blanca: Listen, I don't know if I should, you know, hang out with you and your new... whatever she is.
Dario: Hey, Blanca, he's trying to be friendly...
Eduardo: No, that's cool. She's just being protective of your mother. I respect that. But Blanca, if I may... the reason that Adriana and I didn't work out is simple.
Eduardo: Yeah. I wasn't the man she thought I was. She was in love with the man she married, but that man didn't really exist. It's kind of a shame, actually, because that guy is a better man than I'll ever be. Truth be told.
Julie: Oh, Shawn-Douglas, it's so good you're here. Thank you, thank you.
Shawn: Yeah, like I told mom, there's nowhere else I would be.
Doug: You saw her? How is she doing?
Shawn: Well, you know mom. How you doing, kid? Yeah, I know. Yeah, me too.
Justin: Okay. Take a seat. Don't look at them. Sit down. I got it. Everyone's here and everyone loves you, but you need to focus. Can you do that for me?
All rise. Second judicial circuit court, criminal division, is now in session, the honorable Karen Fitzpatrick presiding.
We all need a hug in the morning
Blanca: Well, I'm sorry. I wasn't being very fair.
Eduardo: No, that's okay. You were just being protective of Adriana. I think that's admirable.
[Cell phone rings]
Blanca: Sorry. It's from the hospital. I need to get this, sorry.
Dario: Thank you for trying to smooth things over with Blanca.
Eduardo: Oh, sure. I meant what I said. I like that she's loyal to someone who was kind to her. So, the two of you-- is it serious?
Dario: I don't know. I don't think either one of us knows. Her old boyfriend was a real jerk. He messed with her head. She wants to take things slow. What about you and Kate?
Eduardo: We're becoming friends.
Dario: You don't look at her like that.
Eduardo: What can I say? I never met anyone like her. You know, she's... she's stunning, obviously, but she's so smart, so cool...fierce. Extremely competent under pressure. She's... she's ice and fire, you know?
Dario: Okay. [Laughs] Wow. Okay, so... let me ask you a question. How do you think she's going to react when she finds out what we're really doing at the club? I mean, that could be a problem right? She's a DiMera lover.
Eduardo: She's not gonna find out what we're really doing. 'Cause and I are gonna keep that strictly between ourselves.
Blanca: [Clears throat] Excuse me, I need to leave. They called me in to work.
Eduardo: Good to see you again, Blanca.
Blanca: Right. Dario: What are you-- wait a minute!
Kate: What did I miss?
Dario: Hey, hey, hey! Do you want to tell me what's going on?
Blanca: Sure. I'm gonna tell you what's going on. If your father is keeping a secret from Kate about your new business, I can only imagine you're keeping something from me too.
Judge: [Bangs gavel] In the matter of the state versus hope Williams Brady on the charge of murder in the first degree, the defendant has confessed to the murder of Stefano DiMera. Is that correct?
Hope: Yes, your honor.
Judge: The defendant has signed a confession and waived the right to trial. Therefore, we proceed immediately to the sentencing phase of the trial. I had requested a pre-sentencing report from the probation department. It examines the defendant's record. Mr. Kiriakis, ms. Trask, have you both received copies of this report in a timely manner?
Justin: Yes, your honor.
Trask: Yes, your honor.
Judge: Based on the defendant's record and the heinous nature of the crime, the court agrees with the prosecution that the defendant is eligible for the death penalty. I will not, however, rule on the punishment until hearing from both the prosecution and the defense. District attorney Trask?
Trask: Thank you, your honor. To most of Salem, this woman is a fine, upstanding citizen. A member of a well respected family, a decorated police detective of the Salem police department. However, she has another, darker side to her as well. A side that allowed her to abuse and break the very law she had sworn to uphold. Hope Williams Brady committed premeditated murder and she had every intention of getting away with it. But she didn't get away with it. And today is her call to judgment. Can a toothpaste do everything well?
Kate: Are you gonna tell me what happened before? I left and then came back, and everyone had disappeared.
Eduardo: I don't know what happened. I'm gonna let Dario sort it out.
Kate: Yep. I always stay out of my kids' business. Best not to interfere.
Eduardo: [Laughs] You said that with a straight face.
Kate: Wait--it's true! I mean, maybe there was a time when I felt differently, but I learned my lesson. That's why I've decided I'm not gonna trap Adrienne, drop in the wild to keep her from marrying Lucas.
Eduardo: Such restraint.
Kate: Yeah. I am lousy with restraint. So you ready for two more?
Eduardo: I'm always ready for more. Especially with you, kid.
Dario: What makes you think I'm keeping something from you?
Blanca: [Scoffs] Listening to your dad say Kate can't find out what you guys are up to.
Dario: Just 'cause my dad's keeping something from Kate doesn't mean I'm keeping something from you.
Blanca: Oh, so I'm not being fair? Am I overreacting?
Dario: I didn't say that.
Blanca: No, it's okay. You know what, maybe I am. But I don't care. You see, I heard you guys talking about a secret, and I don't think you were planning a surprise party. And after Guillermo, you know, I'm so tired of secrets. If you and your dad are involved in something shady, I don't want any part of it, okay? I don't wanna be down that road again.
Dario: Fine. Then let me tell you the truth.
Justin: Objection. Counsel is testifying.
Judge: We're in the sentencing phase, Mr. Kiriakis. Overruled.
Roman: Damn it.
Shawn: She's out for blood.
Judge: Continue, Ms. Trask.
Trask: I would like to revisit the day in question when detective Brady showed up uninvited to the home of Stefano DiMera. She entered the house and confronted him. Not only did she confront him, she shot him not once, not twice, but repeatedly as you will see in the autopsy report before you. The defendant then proceeded to cover up the murder, hide the body, and frame another person for the crime.
Justin: Objection. My client is being charged with one count. All these other claims are wholly unsubstantiated. Can Ms. Trask please stay on point?
Judge: Strike those last remarks from the record. Counselor, watch yourself.
Trask: I understand that the defense will bring up detective Brady's standing in the community, her charitable work with the Horton foundation, indeed all the wonderful things she has done in the past. But that is all moot now. Regardless of the kind of person Stefano DiMera was perceived to be, he was still a human being. His life mattered. A life that detective Brady took an oath to protect. And yet, she didn't consider any of that. She showed up at that day and murdered him in cold blood, which is why the people have no choice other than to urge the court to render the only decision that keeps this whole proceeding from being a complete and utter mockery. Death by lethal injection.
Kate: So, I'm gonna ask you a question. Did you plan this?
Eduardo: Did I--oh, yes. I mean, I think that's clear. Given that I went to where you live and I asked you out to lunch. I planned going out to lunch. In fact, lunch rarely takes me by surprise.
Kate: Okay, that's not what I meant. Did you plan us bumping into Dario and the girlfriend?
Eduardo: Why would I do that?
Kate: I don't know. Maybe you want me to get to know Dario better.
Eduardo: Well, all right. I shameless took advantage of the situation. I thought it would be a good idea. You already know Gabi and Rafe really well. I thought you should get to know Dario a little better too, maybe.
Eduardo: Isn't that what you do when you're serious about someone? You introduce them into your family.
Kate: Are you serious?
Eduardo: I'm serious.
Dario: My father is keeping something from Kate, but it's nothing shady. We're looking to expand the club, and in order to do that, we're using one of Kate's competitors.
Blanca: That's it?
Dario: That's it. Me, I think eventually Kate's will find out, and that is between her and my dad. It has nothing to do with us.
Blanca: Right. Well, I'm sorry-- I'm sorry, I just... you know, after Guillermo, I'm very... you know.
Dario: Yeah, I get it. You're on your guard. But I'm not Guillermo. For one thing, I'm not an idiot and only an idiot would do something to make you walk away.
Judge: Mr. Kiriakis.
Justin: Thank you, your honor. Your honor, ms. Trask is, as always, quite eloquent. And while it is a fact that my client has confessed to shooting Stefano DiMera, our job here today is to determine if my client committed first degree murder. To that end, I want to help the court understand why the shooting was not a choice, not a pre-meditated act. That in fact, my client was in such a state that there was, actually, an absence of thought. No decision was made. That moment was the culmination of years and years of torture and abuse. I want to help the court understand that the real victim here isn't Stefano DiMera. The real victim is hope Brady.
