Kayla: Well, your dad sure has been gone a while.
Joey: He's just getting coffee. How much trouble could he get into?
Kayla: You're really gonna ask that question? I just wish we could have left when we said we were going to. I mean, there was no reason that we need to stay the night.
Joey: Yes, there was. Dad was right. You needed to get some rest before we go back to Salem. Especially after everything you've been through. After everything I put you through.
Kayla: Joey. Look, we were just happy to get you out of there relatively unscathed. When I think of what would have happened to you--
Joey: I'm fine. Except for being arrested. I mean, at least I made bail. I don't have to stay here till the hearing.
Kayla: Well, the first order of business is to get you home safe and sound.
Steve: Okay, coffee time.
Steve: Here we have one half-caf, extra hot, non-fat mocha grande.
Kayla: Yes, thank you. Thank you.
Steve: You have no idea what it took me to order that.
Kayla: I appreciate the sacrifice.
Steve: Espresso, straight up for you, young man.
Joey: No thanks. You know how bad that is for you?
Steve: Well, I'm so sorry they were fresh out of green slime smoothies.
Steve: What else did they feed you at that commune?
Joey: I'm just worried about Mom, okay? You know how bad caffeine is for your blood pressure?
Steve: She's the doctor.
Joey: I still can't believe no one told me she was sick.
Kayla: Joey, I'm not sick.
Joey: Yeah, like it's normal to have a subdural hematoma.
Kayla: It's getting better.
Joey: Is that why you needed Dr. Thompson to babysit you?
Kayla: He was just being overly cautious, and he had some friends that he wanted to see here in California so it worked out for both of us. And look, if I thought that I was in any real danger, I would check myself into a hospital. I--I may be stubborn, but I'm not gonna risk my life. I got too much to live for.
Joey: Still, I wouldn't have left if I knew that--
Kayla: Well, maybe you shouldn't have left regardless. But now you can't worry about all this because you have all these court appearances to make.
Steve: Okay, that's it. Uh-uh. You know what's bad for your mom's blood pressure? This kind of bickering, this fighting, okay? So I have an idea. Do you remember our last family road trip?
Joey: Where we got lost in the bush, broadsided by a runaway rhino, and you and Mom didn't talk for three days?
Steve: We always said we wanted a do-over, didn't we?
Joey: Who said that?
Kayla: I don't remember that.
Steve: Come on, listen. We could go do the Grand Canyon or the Painted Desert. You know what? I even heard that the world's biggest turnip is somewhere in Kansas.
Steve: Maybe it was Missouri. I'm not sure.
Joey: Do we have to?
Steve: Yes, yes. Come on, you know you want to. Put the Griswolds to shame. Come on, Johnson family road trip. What do you say?
Joey: That came from the laundry bag. It's dirty.
Kayla: I know. It's--
Joey: Then why are you folding it?
Steve: Because she's your mother. You know, I was hoping to get home before the Summer Olympics, and nobody bother me during table tennis.
Kayla: Since when?
Steve: I'm mellowing out, baby.
Kayla: I'll believe that when I see it.
Steve: It's true. Scout's honor.
Kayla: Well, that would be a reassuring thought, except you were never a scout.
Steve: That's a technicality. You wait and see. I'm gonna be the model husband.
Kayla: We're not married.
Steve: We can rectify that.
Kayla: Don't push your luck.
Joey: We can always stop in Las Vegas on the way home.
Steve: Oh, now that is a great idea. You can be our witness and Elvis can officiate. What could be better?
Joey: I now pronounce you husband and wife. Thank you. Thank you very much.
Kayla: Oh. Joey, is something wrong?
Joey: It's Jade. She said she needs help.
Kayla: What kind of help?
Joey: I don't know. I'm waiting for her to text back.
Kayla: You know, Joey, she has a whole collective of people who can help her there.
Joey: Don't even start.
Kayla: No, no, I just don't want her drawing you back in there.
Steve: Joe, you made a choice to leave there, right?
Joey: Yeah, and now I'm making a choice to go back.
Joey: She's not answering.
Steve: It's been five seconds.
Joey: The people she's with, they're really shady.
Steve: Yeah, no kidding.
Joey: If she needs help, I owe it to her.
Kayla: Joey, come on.
Joey: You guys dropped everything to come and find me. Jade doesn't have anyone.
Joey: You and Dad taught me to do the right thing. I know I've screwed up plenty lately, but I'm gonna help Jade if she's in trouble. I'll meet you at the giant turnip--
Kayla: No, no, no, no. You are not... You're not going to the commune alone.
Joey: You guys can come with me or not, but I'm going either way.
Julie: Careful. Watch out for the--
Jennifer: What is going on?
Julie: JJ. He's helping us move some of our things from the Martin house, just those little odds and ends that make for a civilized life.
Jennifer: Oh, my goodness. If this is little, I would hate to see the big odds and ends.
JJ: All right, uh, where do you want it?
Jennifer: How about Chicago? I'm just kidding.
Julie: Park it in the living room for now, darling.
Jennifer: Be careful.
Julie: Boy, you could use a break, JJ.
Jennifer: This is really, really nice of you to help Doug and Julie move all of this stuff.
JJ: Well, they're helping you by staying here with you so it's the least I could do.
Jennifer: What happened to your chin?
Steve: Joe. Nothing from Jade yet?
Joey: It's so quiet.
Kayla: Are you sure she's even in there still?
Joey: She said she was. These doors are never locked. And why are all the blinds closed?
Steve: I'll go around, check the other entrance.
Kayla: Steve. You know, baby, why don't we just go wait in the car for your dad to come back?
Joey: I think those blinds just moved.
Joey: Somebody's definitely in there. Jade!
Kayla: Joey. Joey, don't.
Dirk: Why the hell are you back here?
Joey: I want to see Jade.
Dirk: She's not here. So why don't you take Mommy and leave?
Kayla: Joey, come on, stop doing that, Joey. Joey, Joey, stop it.
Dirk: I told you to leave.
Kayla: Wait, what? Hey! Hey! Open the door! Open the door.
Dirk: Come here!
Joey: What are you doing, man? What are you doing?
Dirk: You didn't answer my question. Why the hell did you come back here?
Joey: What the hell are you talking about?
Dirk: This is all your damn fault. Your dad, your stupid dad, he brought the cops here.
Joey: No, he didn't.
Dirk: Yeah, and they were looking for you.
Joey: And they found me.
Joey: I could have told the cops that you robbed that store but I didn't. I took all the blame for driving that getaway car even though I had no idea what you were about to do.
Dirk: Oh, oh, so I should just thank you? You should have kept your damn mouth shut. Because you tried to man up and take responsibility, they came back. They tried to haul us all in.
Joey: They didn't have anything on you.
[Banging on door]
Joey: What's going on here?
Dirk: It's none of your business.
Joey: What are you doing?
Dirk: Get over there.
Kayla: Open the door!
Dirk: Get down!
Steve: Hey, hey, hey, what's going on?
Kayla: Oh, thank God you're back.
Steve: Where's Joe?
Kayla: Yeah, he thought he saw some movement here, that somebody was inside, and he was trying to pound on the door. Before I could stop him, some guy reached out and grabbed him and pulled him inside.
Steve: Okay, come here, come here. Whole place is locked up tight.
Kayla: Well, what do you think's going on?
Steve: I don't know. You call the police. I'll try to find a way in.
Jade: Dirk, Dirk, this isn't Joey's fault. Okay? It's not his dad's, either. If you hadn't lost it on the cops, we wouldn't be here right now. Don't make things worse. Please. Please.
Joey: I'm sorry.
Dirk: I didn't tell you to get up.
Joey: I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Dirk: Yeah, sure you are.
Joey: Look. Look, my dad--my dad is right outside, okay? And more--more cops are on the way. Look, you're not gonna get out of here unless you surrender.
Dirk: Yeah, I know that. That's why I called the cops. Told them I want to make a deal.
Joey: Good. That's good. That's good for you.
Dirk: Oh, I'm glad you like that idea, 'cause if I don't get what I want, everybody in this room is gonna die.
Julie: You're wasting your breath, JJ.
Jennifer: Please tell me what happened.
JJ: First, I want to know what's going on with you. How are these meetings? Are they working? You are going, aren't you?
Julie: She's going regularly. Doug and I make sure of that. Not that your mother needs any pushing.
Jennifer: I want to be there. It's good. They're good for me.
JJ: No relapses?
Jennifer: No. I am fighting with everything inside me for you and Abigail. So tell me, how did this happen?
JJ: Basically, I opened a door into Rory's fist.
Jennifer: Wait, Rory? He hit you? I-I didn't even think you were friends anymore. I thought he was out of your life.
JJ: Well, if he wasn't then, he is now. 'Cause I was trying to help him out and I just ended up screwing him over. Some friend.
Dirk: Get down.
Joey: Come on, man.
Jade: Dirk! No!
Dirk: Just shut up! Just shut up, okay? Everybody shut up! Ugh!
Jade: [Whimpers] I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have asked you to come.
Joey: I'm glad you did. I'm glad you did. What did Dirk do?
Jade: [Sobbing] He killed a store clerk.
Joey: Oh, my God.
Jade: It happened a while ago, but when the cops came and they questioned him, he freaked out, and Dirk pulled out his gun, and it went off, and it hit the cop. I'm just--it's an accident but now I'm just scared that Dirk knows he's got nothing to lose.
Joey: Shh, shh. It's okay. It's okay. It's okay.
Dirk: Aw, are you two guys having a little moment there? Sorry. I got to interrupt. Hey, calm down, Jade. You wouldn't want somebody to get shot, now would you?
Simone: Dirk, take a breath and think about what you are doing.
Dirk: Oh, you know what? That's a great idea. Why didn't I think of that before? But my buddy pal here has got the best timing ever. He's my ticket out of here, I think.
Simone: Dirk! No!
Dirk: All right. Oh, hey, one-eye. I got a gun in your kid's back, and just so you know, I killed a guy, and I also shot a cop so I got no problem putting a bullet in your kid if I don't get what I want.
Kayla: Don't hurt him. Don't hurt him, please.
Steve: Whatever you want.
Kayla: Whatever you want.
Dirk: You guys can't help me. I don't know where the hell the cops are.
Steve: I don't either.
Dirk: All right, look. I got a whole bunch of hostages in here including a wounded officer. If I don't have a negotiator here in ten minutes, I'm gonna start picking them off one by one.
Steve: Shh, just wait one second. I got a better idea, man. Now listen, once the cops get here, you're trapped. Don't you know that? You heard of the ISA? I'm former ISA. I can make one phone call and deliver whatever it is you want.
Dirk: [Laughs] Yeah, right.
Steve: Yeah, right, I can. You want to negotiate with someone, I'm your best bet. In fact, I'm probably your only way out of here alive.
Dirk: If you're my best bet, then I'm screwed. You're the whole reason I'm here. I'll take my chances with the cops.
Steve: Nah, look, I have a vested interest in how this thing turns out. The cops don't care.
Dirk: You know what, if you care about your son, you back up. You back up or you'll never see Joey alive again, you hear?
Steve: Wait, wait!
Kayla: Wait. Wait, no! Joey!
Steve: Baby, baby. Don't do that. Don't do that. Don't do that. Shh, shh, shh. We're gonna figure this out. Don't do that. Shh, shh, shh.
Dirk: You better pray Mommy and Daddy do what I said, otherwise little Joey is gonna be the first one to die.
Jade: I really didn't think you'd come after the way we left things. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
Joey: You said you were in trouble. Of course I came. I told you I love you. I meant it.
Jade: I love you too.
Joey: We're gonna be okay. Hey. We're smarter than Dirk is, and we have the best backup in the world.
Kayla: Oh. Oh, the dispatch said that the police are stuck at a pile up on the freeway.
Steve: I'm not waiting for them to get here.
Kayla: No, please, don't. Kayla: Oh, my God, we have to do something.
Steve: No, this is not gonna work.
Kayla: No, come on with it. Do something.
Steve: I know, and I'm gonna do something. Shh, shh. You need to calm down.
Kayla: No, I'm not gonna calm down.
Steve: Listen to me, listen.
Kayla: I'm not gonna calm down.
Steve: Well, listen. Can I just tell you something? Once the cops get here, that kid is gonna feel the walls closing in. He's already shot a man. Now nothing will stop him from doing it again. I don't want to scare you, but that's--that's the reality.
Kayla: Yeah, well, the police are gonna get here and they're gonna bring their negotiator who's trained in this sort of hostage thing.
Steve: Okay, well, I'm trained in the same thing. Okay? And I don't have the power to arrest him. I'm an outsider just like he is.
Steve: So, we're gonna go in there and don't argue with me. I can talk this kid down.
Kayla: You can't.
Steve: I can. Now I need you to go back to the car. Wait for the police to get here.
Kayla: No, no, I am not doing that. What if somebody needs some kind of medical attention or what if somebody's hurt in there?
Steve: You've got to go back.
Kayla: No, don't you argue with me this time. Look, be careful, all right? I couldn't stand it if anything happened to Joey or you.
Steve: Look at me. You're gonna be fine, sweetness. Keep the faith.
Kayla: I'm trying. [Sighs]
Simone: He is losing a lot of blood. Dirk! If he dies, it will be so much worse.
Dirk: Shut up. Hey!
Steve: Whoa, whoa. It's cool, man. It's cool.
Dirk: No, it's not.
Dirk: What do you want?
Steve: Okay, easy. I want to save your life and everyone else's.
Dirk: You mean your son's.
Steve: No, I mean everyone's. Why didn't you run, son?
Dirk: Don't you call me son.
Steve: Nobody's stopping you right now.
Dirk: What, you think I'm stupid? My mug shot's plastered everywhere. The second those cops will see me, they're gonna shoot me.
Steve: What do you think they're gonna do when they get here? They're gunning for you.
Dirk: Yeah, so I'm screwed either way, right?
Steve: No, that's not right. Just tell me, what do you want out of this? I can help you.
Dirk: Why would you do that?
Steve: Because I want everyone here to get out of here alive.
Dirk: Yeah, except for me, right?
Steve: No, even you. Now listen. First thing you need to do is back your finger off that trigger, man, before you have an accident. Now you tell me what it is you need, and trust that I can make that happen.
Kayla: Oh, thank God.
Hayes: Dr. Brady? You said your son is in there?
Kayla: My son and his father.
Dirk: Um, you know what, I'd love a mansion on the beach and a lifetime supply of weed. And women, yeah, yeah. But if I have to pick one, I guess I'll go with the weed. You see, it doesn't matter what I asked for.
Steve: Whoa, whoa.
Dirk: Yeah, you're some kind of miracle worker? You can make all this go away?
Steve: Hey, hey. Shh.
Joey: He's done it before.
Dirk: Oh, yeah? What did little Joey do? Huh? Jaywalk? Steal a pack of gum?
Steve: Hey, hey.
Dirk: I'm on the rap for murder.
Steve: Hey, hey, I can fix this. I can fix this.
Dirk: I want immunity. Yeah, go over there. Everything I've done and everything I might do, and I want it in writing from a judge.
Steve: Okay, you got it. Okay. But in order to get something, you need to give something up. You need to let the rest of these people go.
Dirk: Why? So you can throw me under the bus and take back everything you just promised?
Steve: No, no, no. You only need one hostage. Now let the officer go get some treatment. It'll earn goodwill and then you can use me as your collateral. Okay?
Hayes: Does your husband have a death wish? He voluntarily walked into a hostage situation?
Kayla: He is an ex-ISA agent. He was trained to do these things.
Hayes: He has no authority to--
Kayla: At least he was here.
Hayes: If he gets someone else killed--
Kayla: You should be grateful that he's helping.
Hayes: He's just another distraction. Give me his phone number.
Kayla: It's dead.
Hayes: Well, then, we'll just have to move on to plan B.
Dirk: Oh? Cops finally dragged their lazy butts out here.
Steve: That'll be them.
Dirk: How'd they get my number?
Steve: Probably from your rap sheet. Ignore it.
Dirk: No, shut up. Hello?
Hayes: Dirk Dillard?
Hayes: I'm Detective Hayes. What's going on in there?
Dirk: Look, your guy's bleeding out on the floor so let's cut the chit chat, all right? I want a limo and a plane to Mexico, and I want 100 grand.
Hayes: We can negotiate, Dirk. Can I call you Dirk?
Hayes: We can negotiate, but I'm gonna need a show of good faith.
Dirk: What does that mean?
Hayes: We're gonna need you to release some hostages.
Dirk: No! No, I--give me what I want first, okay? You got a half an hour.
Steve: He can't get you any of that in a half hour. But I can.
Dirk: Oh, yeah? The ISA is just gonna let me live it up in Mexico because you tell them to?
Steve: Yeah, they will. And I've got skin in this game, Dirk. I'm desperate for you to get what you want so I can get what I want: all these people out of here alive.
Steve: Put it on speaker again.
Dirk: No, I told you, don't call me that.
Hayes: We can get you everything you asked for. We can; I'm just gonna need a little more time.
Dirk: How much more time, huh?
Hayes: I got to tell you, my hands are tied here until we get a show of good faith from you. We need you to release a hostage.
Dirk: Are you deaf or stupid? I told you no.
Jade: My God, I don't know why I wanted to stay here. I should have listened to you.
Joey: It's gonna be okay.
Rory: It's about time you showed up, man. What am I doing here? Why'd you text me?
JJ: Okay, you didn't give me a chance yesterday to explain what happened.
Rory: No, no, I know everything that I need to.
JJ: What's going on? What's going on with you? What's wrong?
Rory: You think your jaw is bad? I'm a dead man, dude, and it is all on you. g about?
Rory: You don't think I'm gonna get nailed for being a narc? You put a target on my back, dude.
JJ: It wasn't supposed to go down that way.
Rory: You swore I would have immunity, that my name would be kept out of it if I gave up the top dogs.
JJ: I meant every word, Rory.
Rory: Then why am I still facing charges right alongside Snowball and Maverick?
JJ: I didn't have the authority to make you a deal. I thought I did, but the commissioner shot me down. Rory, I'm sorry.
Rory: So you got caught up in being a big cop, and I go down for it? Thanks for messing up my life, bro.
JJ: Okay, I may have made a mistake, but I didn't mess up your life. You messed up your life. You could have gotten clean when I--
Rory: Shut up. I don't need lectures from you.
JJ: I'm trying to help you, Rory.
Rory: You want to get yourself killed too? Stay away from me, man.
Rory: Dude, I can protect you. I can find a way to protect you.
Rory: Dude, don't you get it? I don't want your protection. It won't do any good, anyway. Some people just can't be helped, man.
Jennifer: [Panting] [Screams] [Screams] Where is it? Where? Hi. I need help. I need help.
Julie: You know, dear, I brewed you some tea. I thought it might help you relax.
Jennifer: My daughter's in a psychiatric ward. My son got beat up by a drug dealer, and he also risks his life every day being a police man, so unless there's something stronger in that, I don't want any.
Jennifer: I'm not gonna fall off the wagon, Julie.
Julie: Well, nobody plans to.
Jennifer: How--how did this become my life, Julie? I was a successful reporter. I was married to the man of my dreams who I loved more than anything in this world. I'm the mom of two amazing kids.
Julie: Yes, and you're still the mom of two amazing kids, and you can do and be anything you want with your life.
Jennifer: No, I can't. Not until I know JJ and Abigail are safe. I don't know how Grandma and Grandpa did this. I'm serious. They had five kids. And they never lost hope. Even when Uncle Tommy was in Korea and even your mom...
Julie: Tragedy. It's all around us all the time. All I have to do is open the newspaper or when you open your tablet. Yeah, how did Grandma and Grandpa deal with all of that? I think the way wise people have always dealt with difficult times. They relied on family, and this family stepped up. That's something we Hortons are best at.
Jennifer: I am so grateful that you are here. Really. Boxes, suitcases, steamer trunks, I'll take it all. I mean it.
Julie: Oh, darling.
Steve: Hey, hey.
Dirk: No, no, get over here. Come on.
Steve: All right, all right.
Dirk: Come on!
Steve: All right.
Steve: Okay, okay.
Dirk: You--you move away from her.
Jade: Why are you doing this?
Dirk: This place is all that I had, and ever since you've shown up it's all gone to hell.
Steve: No, no, no. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy. Let me just talk to you. Let me just talk to you. Come on, now. Now think about this. You don't want to do that. Cops hear shots, they come in here guns ablazing. You got a death wish? Do you want to die? Huh? Now listen. This thing got out of control, man. I know that. You know that. But you got to convince them.
Steve: Okay? I'll tell you how. Let that cop go. Let him get treatment, man. If he dies, you're not gonna be able to make any more demands, okay? You can still get out in front of this thing.
Simone: He's right, Dirk. You're not a bad kid. These are your friends. They don't want to see you hurt. You don't want to hurt them.
Dirk: No. No--
Simone: I gave you a place to crash when your parents kicked you out and I have never asked you for anything. Please stop.
Steve: Dirk, you're a smart guy. If you weren't, you wouldn't have run, okay? I know that.
Dirk: I bet you wish I would have run now.
Steve: No, I don't. Just listen to me. The odds aren't in your favor here. You don't need me to tell you that. But you can still control how this thing ends.
Steve: Yeah. I can see you're scared.
Dirk: No. No, I'm not scared.
Steve: Okay, okay. Okay. But I know how you feel. I felt like that myself. I grew up in an orphanage. I was on the streets just like you. I ended up in the Merchant Marines.
Dirk: Spare me your stupid story.
Steve: I had two eyes back then. Then I got into a fight with my best friend over a girl. And it's because of that dude that I'm standing here right now. I can't tell you how many times I panicked. I was on the verge of doing something stupid. He saved me from myself. All I needed was for somebody to be on my side. And you can make the right choice here. And you can undo a whole lot of bad choices. I'm living proof of that.
Hayes: Go around the side of the house. Get in position. Wait for my instructions. Go!
Kayla: What are you doing? What are you doing? You're not sending them in there to storm the place, are you?
Hayes: I'm doing what's necessary to resolve the situation safely.
Kayla: No, no, no, I am begging you. Let Steve have a chance. Come on.
Hayes: Steve has already made a complicated situation impossible. If he wanted to play hero, he should have done it on somebody else's watch. Don't move!
Gibson: It's me.
Hayes: Gibson. Come on, go.
Kayla: Bring him over, bring him over. Let me help.
Hayes: Come on, come on.
Kayla: Oh, God. The ambulance is on its way, all right? Hang in there. Hang in there.
Simone: Oh, there they are. Where's Joey? Wait.
Hayes: Get behind the car. Get behind the car.
Kayla: Where's Joey?
Simone: What? Oh, my God. I tried to get Dirk to release them. He would not listen to me.
Kayla: How dare you? How dare you? You taught these kids to just turn their back on the rules. To forget about society. Do whatever they want, take whatever they want, to hell with everybody else. I swear to you, if my son and his father do not walk out of there alive, you will wish that you'd never met me. ay, good. You made the right choice. But what about Joe and Jade? Why do you need them?
Dirk: 'Cause I want to make sure you do what you said.
Dirk: No, no, no, no. No.
Dirk: You call your people, and you make this go away.
Steve: I will.
Dirk: Hey, hey!
Hayes: Shots fired. Eyes on me. Eyes on me.
I got him!
Jade: Oh, my God.
Steve: It's okay. I'm here.
Kayla: Joey, Joey, Joey. Give us some space. A little space here. It's okay. Look at me, look at me. You're gonna be all right. You're all right. We need to put pressure on this wound. Get me something. Get me something. Oh. Oh, it's okay. You're gonna be okay.
Joey: This is all my fault.
Kayla: No, no, no, no.
Joey: I don't want to die.
Steve: I got it, I got it.
Kayla: You're not gonna die.
Steve: You are not gonna die.
Kayla: You are the strongest kid we know. Come on, Joey. Keep fighting. Where's the ambulance?
Jade: I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
Steve: Daddy's here. Mama's here.
Kayla: Hang on. Come on. Help is coming. Come on, hang on.
