Doctor, you're getting a fever.
Kayla: I can't get sick.
You already are.
I'm getting you a cubicle.
Kayla: Steve, did you find Joey?
Steve: No, not yet, but I did talk to jade's mother.
Kayla: Well, did she know anything?
Steve: Yeah, her daughter is a pain, and she's in big trouble, but no clue as to where she is.
Kayla: Well, how many days has she been missing, and did-- did--did they even know it?
Steve: We didn't get into that.
Kayla: Maybe they're actually responsible.
Steve: Sweetness, are you okay?
Kayla: Yeah, I'm just--it's just been a long night.
Steve: You don't sound good.
Kayla: I'm just tired. Listen, don't worry about me. Let's just concentrate on finding Joey, please.
Steve: I'm on it. Don't worry.
Jade: I hope you're okay with this. I mean, it's--it's not exactly a beach, but--
Joey: Hey, we're far away from Salem. That's all that matters.
Joey: So your aunt runs a youth hostel?
Jade: My dad calls it a commune.
Simone: Jade? Look at you.
Jade: Aunt Simone, oh, my God.
Simone: Welcome to nirvana. Oh, beautiful. Hello.
Summer: Okay, this one is supposed to be good for your immune system, but it doesn't taste nasty. I put a little bit of honey in there.
Maggie: Thank you. It's not gonna make me forget that something is bothering you.
Summer: I'm just nervous about moving in here.
Summer: Well, Victor doesn't like me.
Maggie: [Scoffs] Victor doesn't like most people. Don't worry about him.
Summer: Most people he can avoid. I'm here.
Maggie: He knows how important it is to me that you're here. He'll leave you alone.
Summer: Well, I guess that's all I can ask for.
Maggie: It'll get better. I mean, is that really all?
Summer: Yes, yes, and now, we should get started on your exercises.
Maggie: I'm glad you're here, summer. It'll get easier, and this is a chance for us to really get to know each other. That means a lot to me.
Summer: Me too.
Maggie: Okay. [Sighs]
Chad: Oh, we are so happy to be here. Aren't we, Thomas? There's mommy. Can you smile for mommy? Say, "hi." Hi. We couldn't wait to be here. We're not the only ones. Your mom's coming. Isn't that right?
Abigail: What? My mother? You... why--why--why would you do that? Why would you bring my mom here?
Chad: I just thought-- I thought that you'd want--
Abigail: It's bad enough that you brought my son here.
Chad: Okay, but she wants to spend time with--
Abigail: No, I don't want. I don't want anyone to see me like this.
Deimos: Wow, you're here rather early. To what do I owe this pleasure?
Nicole: The contract to run basic black.
Deimos: You're taking my generous offer?
Nicole: Your terms were acceptable.
Deimos: [Chuckles] Is that how your attorneys put it?
Nicole: Mm-hmm. They read through it thoroughly, and when you sign that, your generous offer will be locked in.
Deimos: You think I won't? Get in here.
So what do you say we celebrate?
Nicole: It's a little early in the day to drink, even for me.
Deimos: I was having my morning coffee. Join me. Here you go. To a long and prosperous relationship.
Nicole: Hmm. You really have been redecorating.
Deimos: Yeah, I guess you could say that.
Nicole: You play?
Deimos: Yes, I do. I studied when I was a kid, but then got distracted, for obvious reasons, but I did get to play when I was in prison.
Nicole: They had a piano in prison?
Deimos: Yeah, yeah, they had a little beat-up spinet in the chapel, and I promised myself when I got out, I was gonna have a baby grand all my own.
Nicole: Look at that. Now you do. Hmm.
[Playing piano] Okay, impress me.
Deimos: [Playing piano]
[Debussy's "Clair de Lune"]
[Soft piano music]
Fynn: This is it. Look at this sample of the iv residue. Compare it with the one from the toddler, Arianna. Check the strands.
It's the same virus.
Fynn: Synthetically manufactured, by the looks of it. Purposely infused into Paul Narita with the intention of infecting as many people as possible.
Job well done.
Fynn: Let's get this to the CDC, top priority.
Sure, but it could take hours to get to the head of their queue.
Fynn: Not if I have anything to say about it. We don't have hours. We have patients that might not live out the day if we don't get answers fast.
Chad: I'm sorry. [Stammering] I just--I thought that you would want to spend time with your family.
Abigail: Not here.
Chad: It's fine here.
Abigail: Chad, it's an institution. I'm being... I'm institutionalized. Do you have any idea what that feels like for my mother? My mother, who's watched her mom in an institution for most of her life?
Chad: She--she couldn't wait to come.
Abigail: Right, yeah. I can see that.
Chad: Look, I just--I just wanted to get here early so I could spend some time with you alone.
[Soft guitar music]
Abigail: Why? Maybe we should just... maybe we should just get used to this.
Chad: No, no, this isn't your life, Abby. This isn't your fate.
Abigail: Chad, it's hereditary, okay?
Chad: You went through something--
Abigail: It starts in your 20s.
Chad: You went through something terrible. It takes time to get over that, and you're gonna get better. [Stammering] You're gonna get better.
Abigail: Or not. Chad, I'm not getting better.
Abigail: I'm not. If anything, I'm getting worse.
Chad: No, listen.
Chad: Hey, it's okay.
Chad: It's okay. Abby, look at me.
Chad: Look at me. Your life is with us. That hasn't changed. Come here.
Chad: Come here.
Abigail: Hey, Thomas.
Chad: It's okay. It's okay.
Hal: I don't know why the private eye is looking for me. I haven't done anything wrong.
Steve: Well, nobody said that, Mr. Michaels.
Hal: It's Hal.
Steve: Okay, Hal. This isn't about you. It's about your daughter, jade.
Hal: [Sighs] All right, what the hell has that girl done now?
Steve: I think she ran away with my son, Joe.
Jade: So then dad says I have to go to Florida and work in uncle Ned's dry-cleaning store, so I could pay them off in, like, three years.
Simone: Hal is such a hard-ass.
Jade: I know, right?
Simone: And Ned's even worse. My brothers are tools. I swear, they must've found me on a doorstep.
Simone: What's your deal?
Joey: My deal?
Simone: Mm-hmm. Jade is fleeing from a very repressive view of life: Punishment and reparations. What are you running from, hmm? Or is she just too hot to let go?
Joey: Uh, all of the above?
Simone: Oh, indeed.
Joey: No, I--I just need a fresh start.
Simone: I can see that. You are carrying a very heavy burden.
More than a few demons chasing you. Don't worry. She didn't say anything to me. She didn't have to. I can feel it, Joey.
Joey: No, I'm not--I'm not-- there's nothing--
Simone: Stop. I don't care where you've been or what you did. You want a fresh start, and you'll get it, right here. This is a space of non-judgment and freedom. You're safe, Joey. Whatever it is, you can let it go.
Chad: Shh, it's okay.
[Thomas crying] Hey, it's okay. Here, baby, why don't you try helping?
Abigail: Okay, um...
Chad: It's okay.
Abigail: Thomas, it's okay. Hey, it's your mama, Thomas.
Chad: It's okay, just--
Abigail: No, he doesn't want that. He always spits it out.
Chad: It helps him now.
[Thomas crying] It works. Shh.
Abigail: Thomas, it's okay. Hey...
Chad: Okay, you have to give it to him.
Abigail: I don't--here, just--you do it.
Chad: Baby, it's--he's just-- he's--shh. He's just--he's cutting a tooth or something, all right? It's fine; it's not you.
Abigail: Just stop, please. Just stop, please, Chad.
Abigail: It's me, okay? It is; it's me. I know it's me. He can't stand me.
Chad: No, it's not--
Abigail, do you need a minute?
Chad: No, it's--we're fine.
Chad: We're fine.
Abigail: I'm sorry. Chad, I'm sorry.
Chad: Abby, what? No. Shh, shh.
Chad: It's okay. It's okay.
Chad: That's better. That's better.
Jennifer: Chad, I'm so sorry I'm late. I was trying to see JJ at the hospital and--
Chad: Wait, what? JJ's in the--
Jennifer: What's wrong?
Chad: JJ's in the hospital?
Jennifer: Yeah, yeah, he's really sick. He has a virus, and it's highly contagious, and Kayla and Fynn said they've never seen anything like it.
Chad: Okay, well, I'm--I'm-- I'm they'll get a handle on it.
Jennifer: Yeah, I hope so. I was just trying to see him, and they won't let anyone in or out. But I'm grateful I get to spend some time with Abigail. Where is she? How come they haven't brought her over here?
Chad: She was just here. She--she decided she needed a minute.
Jennifer: Well, how did she seem?
Chad: Not good. No, she thinks she's getting worse.
Jennifer: And what do you think?
Hal: That girl is bad news.
Steve: "That girl"?
Hal: I bet your son was a good kid, wasn't he? Never got into any trouble before he met her?
Steve: Well, I wouldn't go that far, but yeah, he is a good kid.
Hal: I'm sorry your son got mixed up with jade. Yeah, I know how that sounds, but you see, me and my wife? We did everything we could for that girl. She's determined to throw her life away with both hands. We don't know how to stop her.
Steve: I get that. Do you have any idea why she would take off right now?
Hal: Yeah. We laid down the law with her. We came up with a plan, how she could pay back the damage she did on prom night.
Steve: So she split.
Hal: It involved responsibility and work, so yeah. She's gone.
Steve: Well, have you been looking for her at all?
Hal: [Scoffs] What's the point? Minute we call the cops, she's gonna show up again, acting like nothing happened. That's her M.O.
Steve: Okay. Do you have any idea where she might go when she takes off? Any special place?
Hal: Not a clue.
Steve: So you just wait? Hope she shows up?
Hal: Actually, we just enjoy the peace and quiet in the meantime.
Steve: All right. Hal, would you do me a favor and contact me if and when you hear from your daughter?
Hal: [Sighs] Don't hold your breath.
Kayla: I can't believe I have this.
Fynn: Why? It's obviously airborne and highly contagious. We're all going to get it before it's over.
Kayla: I have--I have to get to the triage, I--
Fynn: No, you don't. Someone walking will do that. Just--come on. You're only going to make people sicker.
Kayla: No, but I have to get to my job; I have to--
Fynn: Your job today is to let someone else take care of you.
Chad: I mean, she's-- she's embarrassed. I mean, she's more than embarrassed, she--
Jennifer: She feels ashamed?
Jennifer: That's how my mom felt.
Chad: That's what she keeps saying, but I--I--I told her that's--that's not true. She's not your mother, all right? She's been through a--a lot of terrible things, and--and obviously, everyone has a breaking point. She--she feels like she's letting everyone down.
Jennifer: Yeah, but that is so not true.
Chad: Well, she doesn't believe that, Jennifer.
Robinson: Hello, Chad, ms. Horton.
Chad: Doctor, how's it going?
Jennifer: How is Abigail doing?
Chad: Look, Thomas started to cry, and then she just crumbled.
Jennifer: Did she talk about Ben and what he did? Did she say anything about my mother?
Robinson: I don't discuss the details of my sessions. I hope you understand.
Chad: Okay, well, she thinks that she's getting worse, so we need to try something different here.
Robinson: We can change course if and when that's necessary, but this is a very hard thing, Chad. It's not a straight line up. I assure you, she is getting help.
Chad: Okay, then what do we do? We--there has to be something.
Robinson: Well, we can remove some of the pressure.
Robinson: It seems that when Abigail sees her family, she feels ashamed, inadequate. That's an extra layer on top of the trauma she's here to deal with.
Chad: Okay, I've told-- I mean, there's--there's nothing to be ashamed of.
Robinson: Well, that can only intensify the feelings. "What's wrong with me that I feel so ashamed?" That can be a vicious cycle.
Chad: So it's a no-win?
Robinson: Well, maybe the right thing to do right now is to remove that pressure.
Jennifer: What? You want us to just stay away?
Chad: [Stammering] I'm sorry. You want--I'm not gonna leave my wife here and stop seeing her. That'd be her worst nightmare.
Robinson: No, no, no. I'm not asking you to abandon Abigail, but she needs time where she doesn't have to worry about how her family is handling her illness. Can you give her that time?
Marlena: Oh, Fynn, Fynn, I just saw Paul. I'm looking for an update from-- from Kayla. Where is she?
Fynn: She's in bed.
Marlena: No. When did that happen?
Fynn: About an hour ago.
Marlena: Oh, my gosh. Have you been able to analyze the iv bag that John's father gave to Paul?
Fynn: We found a synthetic virus, the same one Paul and everyone else here is infected with.
Marlena: So you were right. Yo ling is behind this.
Fynn: It appears that way, yes.
Marlena: How long will it take the CDC to analyze your results?
Fynn: That is the question. Fortunately, their chemist should be here any minute.
Marlena: Okay. In the meantime, what can I do? How can I help?
Fynn: You're still healthy?
Marlena: So far.
Fynn: Then you can keep the patients calm and in bed. That's all we got, Marlena. We're grasping at straws here.
Joey: This place is wild. Your aunt Simone is a trip.
Jade: Yeah, she was always my hero. My dad hated her, so you know she has to be awesome.
Simone: Okay, I found some extra sleeping bags and a spot in the atrium for you to crash.
Jade: The atrium?
Simone: Mm-hmm. Solid glass, 180-degree view of the desert sky at night. It will change your worldview.
Joey: So--so it's all right if we just stay here?
Simone: Of course. Joe, as long as you guys pull your weight and contribute, you're welcome to stay as long as you like.
Chad: Okay, well, just-- we'll give her--we'll give her more time.
Robinson: Great. Let me go and see if she'd like to come back now.
Jennifer: I don't think that this was the best place for Abigail. I really don't.
Chad: Okay, well, do you think she's wrong?
Jennifer: But even with my mom, we--we could still... you don't isolate someone from their family.
Chad: Look, I don't think that's what they want, all right? I think that they're--they're just trying to say she needs some breathing room. It's hard to be normal when people are staring at you, looking for any sign--
Jennifer: Right, I understand that, but then you have to understand that this is--this is my baby.
Chad: Yeah, I want her home, too, Jennifer, and so does our son.
Jennifer: Oh, gosh, look at him. [Crying] You sweet baby. He's wide awake, now, huh?
Chad: Yeah, I have no idea how. He's been up half the night.
Jennifer: So have you. Listen, why don't you let me take him with me when I leave, and then you can get a good night's sleep.
Chad: No, no, Thomas needs to be with me right now, no.
Jennifer: Please, Chad.
Robinson: Abigail has asked me to say her good-byes. She needs rest right now.
Chad: Okay, um, will you-- when can we come back and see her?
Robinson: Let's just see how things are going.
Steve: Hey, Claire. Have you seen Joe or jade yet today?
Claire: Nope, nothing's changed since I saw you before.
Steve: Well, actually, it has. I talked to jade's parents. They don't know where the kids are, and jade hasn't been home in a while.
Claire: Okay, well, they're probably busy or something.
Steve: Or in trouble. That's what her parents think. Apparently, that's what jade does.
Claire: Well, I wouldn't know.
Steve: Well, that's why I'm telling you. This is important, Claire. Joe could be in danger, so everything else--what happened in court, who's gonna be mad at who--that's all just noise.
Claire: Okay, I already told you everything--
Steve: I know. I know what you did. You covered for a friend, and I get that, but if there's anything else, maybe something you remembered after we talked? Please.
Claire: Okay, well, Joey and jade said something about going to los Angeles.
Steve: You think they went to la?
Claire: Look, I don't--I don't know, but uncle Steve, please, you cannot tell them that I told you, okay?
Steve: Don't you worry. I won't tell. I won't tell. Come here.
You've been a big help, baby. Thank you.
Joey: How--how can we contribute?
Simone: You contribute to the well-being of the family, helping to keep a roof over our head and food on our table.
Jade: Well, how do we do that? I mean, is this a farm?
Simone: No, we're in the middle of the desert. I mean, we have a little garden, but that only gets us so far.
Joey: So what do we do?
Simone: Whatever it takes. Do you not know how rigged the game is, Joe? How a tiny number of people are holding all the strings, everything that righteously belongs to the 99%? We are outcasts here. We're the people they couldn't be bothered with.
Joey: Uh, okay.
Simone: We do whatever it takes to survive, and we don't apologize. You understand?
Jade: I do.
Simone: Then I'll let you explain.
Joey: So what exactly is going on here?
Chad: Oh, where's that bunny? I must have forgot it in the car.
Jennifer: You know, you can call Abigail. They didn't say that was out of bounds.
Chad: Well, I think that we should probably let her decide that.
[Thomas softly crying]
Jennifer: Yeah, you're right.
Chad: Look, I just--I shouldn't have pushed so damn hard. I mean, she was fine until I tried to force Thomas on her, and then--and then--and then Thomas started to cry, and then the whole--
Jennifer: Yeah, I know, but babies--they--they-- they sense tension. They know when something's wrong. Has he been fussier?
Chad: Yeah, I--I thought he was teething, but he's obviously just sensing all of our bad energy.
Jennifer: Chad, please, let me take him for the night. I--I have everything for a baby. I have everything he could possibly need; I mean...
Jennifer: You could spend one night with your Grandma, right?
Chad: It's--no, Thomas is gonna stay here with me.
Jennifer: You'd like that.
Jennifer: Chad, you need a break.
Chad: No, we're fine.
Jennifer: Why not--
Chad: Look, I'm not gonna change my mind, so let it go.
Jennifer: But why, Chad?
Chad: Because I'll be damned if I'm gonna let my son go home with somebody in your situation.
Jennifer: My "situation"?
Chad: Your habit.
Jennifer: My... you think I'm a drug addict?
Deimos: [Playing piano]
[Debussy's "Claire de Lune"]
[Soft piano music]
Nicole: That was beautiful. Why didn't you finish? Do I really remind you that much of her?
Deimos: Doesn't really matter, does it? That was the past. I live in the here and now.
Nicole: I just hate to think that I disturb you.
Deimos: [Chuckles] Nicole, I get the feeling that you live to disturb people.
Nicole: Maybe, once upon a time.
Deimos: Fair warning, I will keep an eye on you, always.
Nicole: You don't trust me?
Deimos: I just handed you a multimillion-dollar fashion house to run. Is that not trust?
Nicole: Or maybe you just want to keep an eye on me, like you said.
Deimos: So you think there's something wrong with me wanting to be cautious with my investment?
I just think it's more interesting to take a chance.
Victor: No, I--I'll get back to you with the account information. Good.
Kate: Hello. It's a beautiful day, isn't it? Though every day you still draw breath must be a win-win situation, right?
Victor: Any day I don't run into you, it sure as hell is.
Kate: Oh, you must have heard the wonderful news.
Victor: That you whored yourself out to my brother Deimos?
Kate: Try again.
Victor: That you whored yourself out to my brother Deimos for a lot of money?
Kate: I'm running your old company, vic. I'm in charge at Titan now. Oh, you're not gonna congratulate me? Not even a "well played, Kate"?
Victor: Well, I do hope that you're playing with Deimos. That will surely end up well for you.
Kate: Mm. I'm a survivor.
Victor: You're running in traffic with scissors.
Kate: Spend time with Maggie. Enjoy your golden years. This is a younger man's game now.
Victor: Enjoy your time at the top. We both know it won't last very long.
Steve: Hey. So it turns out Joe and jade might've taken off for la.
Kayla: You're kidding.
Steve: No, I'm not kidding. I have a few lines out. If I get a good lead, I might be heading out tonight.
Kayla: Please, please do that.
Steve: Is there any chance I can get you to come with me?
Kayla: I can't.
Steve: You know, if it's both of us, he might listen.
Kayla: No, we're still in quarantine.
Steve: Why do you sound so hoarse?
Kayla: I've just been talking a lot.
Steve: Sweetness, please tell me you're not getting sick.
Kayla: No, let's just stop talking about me and go bring our son home.
Steve: Are you sure you're okay?
Kayla: I am. I got to go.
Steve: I'll be in touch.
Yeah, Hal, it's Steve Johnson. Listen, I got a tip that Joe and jade are on their way to la. Now, do you have any--any family or connections there you think they might try to contact? If you do, please give me a call.
Joey: I get that your aunt Simone's talking in some kind of code, but--but what?
Jade: I don't know. I'm not positive, but I think this is, like, a separate country with its own set of rules.
Joey: What, like survival of the fittest? We got to fight each other for lunch?
Jade: [Laughing] No, but, you know, this is family. We look out for each other and anything else we have to do out here, we do it. To steal food or money--
Joey: You're okay with that? She's okay with that?
Jade: I guess. I mean, in the republic of Simone, anything goes. [Chuckling]
Summer: Good, stay buried. Hi.
Victor: Finally. Maggie was expecting you last night.
Summer: I was delayed, but--
Victor: Don't disappoint her.
Summer: I got here first thing this morning. Maggie has already finished her exercises, and now she's resting, and I'm gonna get her lunch when she wakes up. Can I make you a sandwich?
Victor: Good God, a boxed lunch.
Summer: Or a big meal. I will cook whatever there is.
Victor: I'm not hungry.
Summer: Victor, I'm here, and I am going to help my mother and you, if you'll let me. Give me a chance. Let me know if you change your mind about lunch.
Kate: Hello. Oh.
Kate: Am I interrupting something?
Deimos: No, no, not at all. Nicole was just leaving. We have her contract, though. Yeah, all signed.
Nicole: I look forward to working with you.
Nicole: I will have a status report for every division of basic black for you within the week.
Deimos: I like your spirit.
Nicole: Mm-hmm, bye.
Kate: Is this what you want?
Deimos: I think she's gonna do a good job.
Deimos: Yes, send over a messenger right away. I have a contract that needs to be filed.
Chad: I'm sorry to be so blunt.
Jennifer: I don't know where you got this idea.
Chad: Really? Horton town square. You were stumbling around, slurring your speech. I asked you if I could take you to the hospital. You said no, so Lucas came in and said that he would take care of it.
Jennifer: Yeah, he did.
Chad: Did he?
Chad: You're getting help?
Jennifer: Yes, I have been going to some meetings.
Chad: Okay, well, I'm glad you're getting help.
Jennifer: So I--I still can't take my grandson for one night?
Chad: No, absolutely not. Not right now. I couldn't live with myself if-- if something happened to him. You understand how that feels.
Jennifer: I do.
Jennifer: But you'll see. I'm fine, and I am going to get better.
Chad: I know you will, and I'm pulling for you.
Jennifer: Good-bye, my sweet baby.
Abigail: [Sighs] [Crying] [Sighs]
Chad: Don't worry, little man. Mama's gonna come back to us soon. I bet you she's thinking about you right now.
Chad: Aw, what's--I know. I miss her too.
Chad: It's just me.
