Roman: You have a right to remain silent.
Kayla: Roman, please!
Joey: Mom, what's going on?
Roman: Shut up, both of you! Or you're out of here. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Joey: He posted bail!
Kayla: They revoked it. They're holding him in jail until the trial.
Joey: You can't do this!
Steve: Joe, it's okay.
Joey: No, it's not okay! Uncle roman, you don't understand--
Steve: Son. Son! It's for the best.
Roman: You have a right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be provided for you.
Joey: No! [Sighs]
[Cell phone beeps]
Jade: Edge of the square, huh? Pretty dope.
Henry: Oh, must be nice to have a niece with a nightclub.
Jade: Hey, you got your phone?
Theo: Yeah, right here.
Jade: Did you get the text?
Jade: Oh. Kind of weird.
Theo: I'll see you guys later.
Henry: Oh. Later.
[Cell phone beeps]
Claire: Do you think we have enough?
Ciara: Uh, not nearly. Put some over there, and then put some more in the corner.
Hope: Don't you think we should leave a little room for, you know, people?
Ciara: Hey, Claire, I forgot to send you the playlist.
Claire: Oh, no, you didn't. Actually, you sent it to me twice.
Ciara: Did you check the sound system?
Claire: Ciara, everything's cool, okay?
Ciara: [Sighs] Why do I feel like I'm forgetting something, something important?
Claire: Um, I think you're forgetting to breathe. I'll be right back.
Hope: Hey. Hey. You okay?
Ciara: [Sighs] Why do you ask that? I'm fine. It's my birthday. I'm having a huge party, so I'm totally psyched--
Hope: Yes, okay. I can see that. I just don't know if it's because of the party.
Marlena: Oh, I can't stand this. We're sitting around here looking at a map when they could be doing God knows what to John.
Steve: Hey, hang in there. We're closing in on them. We've narrowed it down to three locations. We just have to be sure we have the right one before we make our move. Marlena.
Steve: I promise I'm gonna get him back for you.
Marlena: In what condition?
Rafe: I just got off the phone with the state cop managing surveillance, and I think we can rule out two of three locations, which means John will be... here.
John: Paul. Can you hear me? Paul. Hey, kid. It's dad. Hey, kid. Can you hear me? Easy, easy.
Paul: Oh! What the hell?
John: Easy. Easy. Easy. Easy. Easy.
Paul: What's going on?
Paul: Where the hell are we?
John: That's what I'm trying to figure out. How did you get here?
Paul: I don't know.
Paul: I don't know. [Breathing heavily]
Paul: I was--I was walking home. Suddenly, these guys were behind me. They--they put a bag over my head, and they--they cuffed me. They dragged me to a van or something.
John: How long were you in the van before it stopped?
Paul: I-I don't know.
John: How long?
Paul: They must have drugged me.
Paul: Why are you here? What the hell is going on? Your father came after you... for your blood? That's crazy.
John: He is crazy. I'd like to blame it on the Topits disease or the blood disorder, but it's-- it's deeper-seated than that.
Paul: But wait a minute. You--you said he died in the Korean war.
John: That's what I thought. Tough guy. Survived his wounds, made his way to china, put himself back together, studied with a master, and took a new identity.
Paul: All this time, you've been looking for your father.
John: This whole time, I've been looking for something deep inside him, just--I don't know, just a... just a hint of the man that he used to be.
Paul: I'm sorry, Dad.
John: [Sniffles] Let's move on. We've got to figure out why he brought you here.
Paul: More blood?
John: Well, whatever it is, it's not good. We've got to get you out--now.
Paul: He seems to have this place locked up pretty tight.
John: We're not gonna do it from this position. So let's work on these pipes. It seems weakest up by the flange on top. Stand up. Get up. Come on. Get up. You can do it.
John: Take your chains all the way to the top. Run them up. That's it. Back and forth. Work that link. Work the link. That's it. Come on, kid. You can do it.
Ciara: I am not obsessing over chase. You are. I just want to have a party with my friends, and you keep looking at me like I'm crazy.
Hope: No. Not crazy. Upset.
Ciara: I'm not upset about him. Yeah, that happened, and I can't change it. But I'm not gonna let it mean that I can't ever be happy again or that I can't have any fun. That's why I didn't want a bunch of adults coming.
Hope: Well, that "bunch of adults" is your family.
Ciara: Yeah, and I love them. But not tonight. Tonight I just want kids. My friends won't be peering in on me to see if I'm okay or not. And all they have to do is look at you and see that you don't think I am.
Hope: Ciara... okay. I get it. And this is your night, honey. We do it your way. I promise.
Ciara: I just want to have a party.
Joey: Hey. It's me. It's Joey.
Roman: Yeah, Joey. What's going on?
Joey: Hey, do you have a second? I need to talk to you about something.
Roman: Sure, where are you?
Joey: No, it's okay. I'm gonna come to the station. Thanks, uncle roman. Mom.
Kayla: What's wrong?
Kayla: I don't think that's true. Who were you just talking to? Real cheese people,
Steve: So it is that abandoned medical clinic.
Marlena: I'm so glad you remembered that.
Rafe: Well, it's not abandoned. Evidently, they've been using gas, electricity. They've got cameras all around the perimeter.
Steve: So the cops on the scene, they know to stay put, right?
Rafe: Yeah, yeah, I told them to fall back.
Marlena: All right, so as long as we know where he is, what are we waiting for?
Rafe: Well, hold on a second. You're not going anywhere. You're not a cop.
Marlena: Neither is Steve.
Steve: No, but I have years of experience with operations like this.
Marlena: You think I don't? I've lived with this insanity for over half my life. If John is in trouble, I am not staying behind.
Rafe: Well, I am not gonna let you risk your life. I mean, God only knows what's waiting for us in there. Okay? Just... what, do you want to stand here and argue, or do you want to let us go?
Steve: I'm sorry, Marlena. He's right. We got to get changed and gear up.
Rafe: You know, you haven't violated the terms of your bail yet. It's not too late to pull out. Not till you cross that state line.
Steve: I'm not letting you go in there alone.
Rafe: I'll get backup.
Steve: John's my friend. He's my partner. I'm gonna see this through to the end.
Eduardo: Where's Ari?
Gabi: Oh, she's, um-- she's fine. She's sleeping. Uh, Rafe left a guard outside, so we're all safe.
Eduardo: Thank God she's all right.
Gabi: Um... I meant it when I thanked you for saving her and Rafe.
Eduardo: I just did what I had to do.
Gabi: To atone? Rafe told me that you used to kill people for a living.
Ciara: I don't know. I think it might be too retro.
Claire: Ciara, would you chill? It's a playlist, okay? It's a great playlist, and everybody is gonna be totally cool with the playlist.
Ciara: I'm getting on your nerves, aren't I?
Claire: Sorry. It's just, it's a birthday party, okay? Party, as in fun. You have nothing to worry about.
Ciara: Who's that?
Claire: That is Travis, one of my mom's bartenders. He's here to make sure things don't get out of control. First, my mom locks up all the liquor, then gets Travis to chaperone or whatever. She has such faith in me.
Hope: Well, it seems my work here is done. And since I think, probably, it's gonna be a pretty late evening, I, um-- I'd like to give you your present now. Honey, um, your dad and I... always knew, the moment you were born, how special you were. And I hope this will be a daily reminder of that.
Ciara: Oh, my God. Mom. Oh, my God. Thank you. Thank you.
Hope: Your dad-- his '67 mustang. He--he loved this car. And it just didn't seem right to leave it in storage when there's a beautiful 18-year-old girl who deserves to drive it. He'd want you to have it.
Ciara: Oh, my God, mom. Thank you so much.
Hope: I love you, baby. More than you'll ever, ever know.
Jade: I am going home to change.
Henry: W-wait. What--what about Ciara's birthday present?
Jade: Oh, I think I have something in mind. See you later.
Henry: Okay, later. [Clears throat] How about you? You, uh--you want to go shopping with me?
Theo: Um, there's just something I have to do first.
Henry: Okay, see you at the party.
Theo: See you.
[Cell phone beeps]
Joey: I wasn't talking to anybody. I was just checking my messages.
Kayla: Right. Joey, I know that you are dealing with a lot.
Joey: With being a murderer.
Kayla: Shh! Keep your voice down. Listen, you-- you just have to trust your dad, that he's gonna see you through this.
Joey: That won't change what I did, will it?
Kayla: No. Here, let's sit down. It doesn't define you, Joey. She was a crazy person who used you to destroy your own family, and then she thought it was funny. She pushed, and she pushed until finally something in you just--just snapped.
Joey: And then I killed a person. I took a human life--
Kayla: Under enormous pressure. You weren't in the right state of mind.
Joey: No, it doesn't matter, especially if dad pays the price for what I did.
Kayla: Joey. Joey, where are you going? Joey! (Music plays)
Jade: Hey, guys. Are we the first?
Ciara: The first of many.
Henry: This is for you.
Ciara: Thanks. I'll open it later.
Jade: Okay, this is for you too, but you have to open it now.
Ciara: Oh, God. Thanks, jade.
Jade: You're welcome.
Ciara: But, uh, we're being watched, so I think I'm just gonna stick with soda tonight.
Jade: Hmm. Okay. But if you change your mind, I'll put it over there. And did you invite Joey? He isn't answering my texts.
Joey: Hey. Thanks for seeing me.
Roman: Not a problem. What's up?
Joey: Um, is there somewhere we can go talk in private?
Kayla: Joey! Joey, don't.
Roman: Don't what, Kayla?
Kayla: Listen, you need to trust your father.
Joey: I do trust him, but I also love him-- too much to see him do this. Now, we need to talk alone.
Kayla: Look, roman, this is none of your business, okay?
Roman: Joey doesn't seem to feel that way.
Kayla: Look, I'm warning you, roman.
Roman: I'm warning you. I'm warning you. Kayla, you're my sister, I love you, but I love my nephew too. And if he wants to talk to me alone, then I have an obligation to listen to him, whatever it's about.
Joey: Mom, go, okay? This is between me and uncle roman.
Kayla: No, I am not going anywhere.
Roman: Kayla, all right, listen to me. Right now, this is a chat. Small chat. One-on-one. Nephew, uncle. But if you don't go, I will have to make this official. And I don't think you want that. Not yet, anyway. Those are your options.
Okay. Suppose you start at the beginning.
Eduardo: I'm sure whatever Rafe told you... was a shock. If it's something you can't deal with, you... don't want me in your life... Arianna's life... I'll understand that.
Gabi: I'm here. I'm still here, aren't I?
Eduardo: What I did today can never make up for what I did before-- for abandoning my family. But, Gabi, there were circumstances beyond my control. I was so messed up. I was so... lost. I was completely lost for so long. And I owe you whatever I can do to try to make up for it. I missed you guys. I missed being with my family. I want you back, even though I know I don't deserve you.
Yo Ling: So this is the young man I've heard so much about. It's nice to meet you, Paul. I'm your grandfather.
John: What the hell were you thinking, bringing him here? You got me. Isn't that enough? Come on. Just let him go.
Yo Ling: I intend to. After all this time, look at us here. All together in one place. It's a family moment worth celebrating.
Quilted northern works so well people can forget
Eduardo: You are so compassionate. This hasn't been the best day of my life. Your instinct is to reach out to me, to... try to take care of me.
Gabi: You're my father.
Eduardo: It's dangerous to be close to me. You would be wise, Gabi-- you'd be wise to think twice before risking it.
Gabi: I have-- I have a horrible history too. And I am in no position to judge anyone. You saved my daughter and my brother. They are my world. And they're still here because of you. And that... that counts for a lot.
Ciara: Hey, what are you guys up to?
Claire: It's a secret until later.
Henry: Yeah, we, uh--we have to wait until everyone's here. Like, where's chase?
Ciara: He's not here, and he's not gonna be here. When will you guys stop asking me about him?
Henry: Oh, okay. I--
Claire: Sorry, sorry. I should have told you. Um, we don't talk about chase anymore.
Henry: Is there a reason for that, or--
Ciara: Just drop it, okay? Hey, there's Theo. Hey.
Ciara: I was worried you weren't gonna make it.
Theo: Oh, come on, you know me better than that. I brought you a gift.
Ciara: Oh, my God. You didn't have to.
Theo: Open it up.
Ciara: Theo! Oh, my God. Thank you.
Kayla: Damn it, Steve. Where are you? Come on!
Hope: Hey. Are you okay? Oh, my God. Stupid question. Of course you're not okay.
Kayla: No, I'm not okay.
Hope: Hey. You want to talk?
Kayla: I guess I might as well. I mean, you're back on the force, right? You're gonna hear about it.
Hope: Hear about what?
Kayla: About Joey.
Hope: What about Joey?
Kayla: Part of me is still afraid to tell you because maybe I'm wrong, but... I trust you. Steve didn't kill Ava. Joey did. [Sobs]
Hope: Oh, my God. Kay. What?
Kayla: Um... Steve has been protecting him, and we were--we were trying to build a case for self-defense with mitigating circumstances, but... oh, whatever. I mean, hope, she was a crazy person.
Hope: I know. I know.
Kayla: I mean, and we have evidence--we have evidence to prove that she was crazy and she was trying to kill me. And--and--and--and belle took those to Justin, and he said it-- it doesn't make a difference. And--and then I think--I mean, I don't know, but I think that Joey found out about it somehow, and he knows that there's a good chance that Steve will serve time, and-- and so he... [Sniffles] He went to go see roman, and--I don't know-- I think--I think he's telling him everything right now. [Sighs]
Kayla: Roman said that he's gonna talk to Joey as his nephew, but if Joey tells him the truth, roman's gonna have to do something, isn't he?
Hope: God, what's happening to our families?
Kayla: What do you mean?
Hope: Well, you're definitely gonna hear it too, so, um... chase was arrested.
Kayla: For what?
Hope: Raping Ciara. You know all too well what she's going through. Oh, Kay, she's--she's trying to be so strong. Every time I try to talk to her, she pushes me away. She's crumbling inside. I know she is.
Kayla: My God, hope. You brought that boy into your home, and... well, at least Ciara has you to lean on.
Hope: After Bo died, part of me died too. I lost my judgment, Kay, my sense of who I am, what I stood for. And I didn't protect my daughter. [Crying]
Henry: Okay, everybody. Listen up. You're in for something great. Claire?
Happy birthday, Ciara. I love you so much. I hope you like the song.
[Dramatic piano ballad]
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh ooh-ooh-ooh, hoo-hoo ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh ooh-ooh-ooh walked the longest road under moonlit homes missing you tonight stars are dead and gone what I've loved, I've lost dear, I pray for sympathy but this time this time this time, I'll try well, my angels will find that I've been lost too long and in my heart I tried to feel their only love but I run through fires of mine through this life my heart's been breaking but I know I've got an angel hoo-hoo-hoo ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh ooh-ooh-ooh, hoo-hoo ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh ooh-ooh-ooh but this time this time this time, I'll try well, my angels will find that I've been lost too long and in my heart I tried to feel their only love but I run through fires of mine through this life my heart's been breaking but I know I've got an angel
Theo: Ciara. Are you all right?
Ciara: Oh, Theo. Hey.
Theo: Why'd you run out like that?
Ciara: Just needed to get some fresh air.
Theo: In the middle of Claire's song?
Ciara: Theo, I keep telling people I don't want to talk. Um, you're right. Uh, we should get back to the party. Time to kick this party into high gear. Whoo!
John: If you even have a vestige of a soul, you're gonna let him go. Do what's right. Let him go. He's a young man. He's got his whole life ahead of him.
Yo Ling: You make my point for me. He's young. He'll live a long time. But you, you've served the cause. You've done what you can. And now your blood will afford us the time that we need to finish some vital tasks, tasks that only I can accomplish. But Paul, Paul will still be here when I'm finally gone. And he'll be the young, vibrant future of everything that I've built.
Paul: What does that mean?
Yo Ling: You'll follow in your father's footsteps. You'll work with me. And we'll start by clearing your mind of the putrid trash that western culture has put there.
John: Call it what it is! You're gonna brainwash him!
Yo Ling: You brainwashed him with your avaricious consumer way of life. Do you know how much garbage there is in all your heads? In your houses, in your soils? 120 million tons. 120 million.
Paul: If we're such a mess, then what do you want with us?
Yo Ling: I told you what I want. I want your strength, your longevity, your commitment.
John: Please. I'm begging you, father. Don't do this to him. Take me. You've--you've got me. Take me. Turn me. I'll do whatever you want. I'll go willingly. Just don't do this to my son.
Rafe: Dario? Oh, my-- man, what the hell are you doing here?
Rafe: Yeah. Yeah, you could say that again. Well, listen, I got to go, though, man, 'cause I'm on a case. I can't stick around. So where are you staying?
Dario: I got a room at the inn.
Rafe: Listen, man, don't waste your money. Why don't you just, uh... stay with me, okay? I'm probably not gonna be home tonight, so... make yourself at home. All right?
Dario: Thanks. And what about papi? How's he doing?
Rafe: He's, uh... okay, there's probably something I got to tell you, because... he's okay, but he's in the hospital. He was shot.
Rafe: Yeah. Look, it's a long story. Gabi's there now if you want to go see him.
Dario: Great, I'll just... head on over. Gosh, it'll be great to see the old man again.
Rafe: Yeah. He's probably unconscious.
Kayla: You know that I will help you with Ciara.
Hope: And you know I'll do anything for Joey, anything.
[Cell phone beeps]
Kayla: It's roman.
Hope: Oh, Kay.
Kayla: Oh, God.
Hope: Good luck.
Kayla: I love you.
Hope: I love you too.
[Cell phone rings]
Hope: Theo? What's up?
Theo: I think you need to come to the club.
Gabi: Dario? What--what are you doing here? Oh, my gosh.
Dario: I'm here to see you... and meet my niece.
Gabi: Wh-when did you get back? [Stammering] How did you know I was here?
Dario: I bumped into Rafe. He told me you were here...
Dario: And that the old man was shot.
Gabi: Yeah, yeah. He's gonna be, um-- he's gonna be okay.
Dario: That's good to hear. Nice he didn't croak before I had the chance to say hi after all these years.
Gabi: Dario, don't be like that, okay? Did Rafe tell you what happened, why he was shot?
Dario: Didn't have the time.
Gabi: Well, uh, it's kind of a long story. And I don't think you're gonna like a lot of it.
Yo Ling: Your love for your son touches me, John. I know you don't believe me, but my love for you is also deep and profound.
John: You're right. I don't believe you.
Yo Ling: All our fates were decided long before we gathered here. Like the flow of the mighty Ganges, the Mekong, the Indus, the will of the universe is powerful and never-ending. We just play it out.
Gentlemen, it's time.
John: What-- whoa, what's time? Father. Father, come on, we can-- we can negotiate. We can compromise here. Father, I'm begging you, stop.
I just can't leave it alone Chug! Chug! I just can't leave it alone
Ciara: This is my declaration of independence.
[Cheers and applause]
Ciara: I'm 18, and no one can hurt me. No one can touch me. And I'm freaking tough as nails. That's right!
[Cheers and applause]
All: Drink! Drink! Drink! Drink! Drink! Drink! Drink! Drink! Drink!
[Cheers and applause]
Kayla: What's going on?
Steve: Next time I see you, I'll have John with me.
Marlena: Thank you so much.
Steve: You're welcome.
Marlena: Oh, Steve.
Marlena: Forgot your phone.
Steve: Ooh, gonna need that. I had it on silent so we could work.
Marlena: Yeah. Is something wrong?
Steve: Uh, no. Just a personal problem. I got to take care of it. Don't worry. I'm still on for tonight. See you.
Is that you?
Dario: In the flesh, pops.
Eduardo: Look at you. You turned into a man.
Dario: And you're a little older than I remember. A lot older, actually. You know, I heard a little bit about what you were up to all those years while you were gone. And I got to say, if they're true, it's too bad that bullet that put you in here didn't kill you.
John: Don't do this. Stop them now. Don't do this. Get your hands off him! [Grunting] You can't get away with this, you son of a bitch!
Yo Ling: There's no point.
John: No. Be strong! Be strong, son.
Paul: Get your damn hands off me! [Yells]
John: Don't do this to my son.
Yo Ling: There's no point in struggling, John.
John: Take me. Take me, not my son! Old man, take me, not my son!
