Chad: I still can't believe you're gone. Really gone. How many times have you done this? Hm?
Chad: Disappeared... been presumed dead. You would come roaring back, terrorizing everyone. Epic fights. EJ... tony... forgive me... now if I feel a little bit cheated.
Stefano: You took your shots. [Chuckles] I'm here. Stay whatever you want to, huh? Go ahead. I will listen.
Jennifer: I really do have to wait for that surprise in person? All right. I will then. I love you too, my sweet Abigail. Okay. Give that baby a kiss for me. All right. Night-night.
[Knocks on door]
Steve: Wow. Don't you ever go home?
Roman: Not tonight. Been a hell of a day. Started off by arresting André for the murder of Stefano DiMera.
Steve: No way.
Roman: And it ends with your arrest for the murder of Ava Vitali. So yeah... my dance card is way too full. Steve. You want to tell me what really happened at the hospital?
Steve: I told you. I smothered Ava with a pillow.
Roman: Why is there blood on that pillow that doesn't match you or Ava?
Joey: No. No! No!
Eric: You're working late.
Jennifer: Yeah, just... heading off another disaster.
Eric: Is that what it was?
Jennifer: Yes, definitely.
Eric: You know, I wouldn't bother you, Jenn.
Eric: I mean, if you're afraid that I'd just show up at your house, then...
Jennifer: Wait, Eric, what? Why would you think that?
Eric: Then what disaster?
Jennifer: My pr screw-up. Remember? I told you about it. Seth burns, I apologized to him, and then he made all this noise about accepting my apology, but we both know Seth burns. And if I mess up one more time, I'm gonna be out on my behind.
Jennifer: What? You're okay with that? That sounds okay to you?
Eric: No, no, Jenn, that's not what I meant.
Jennifer: What are you talking about? What?
Eric: I'm talking about us.
Eric: When we kissed.
Joey: Don't call me that! Stay away from me!
Kayla: Son, are you okay?
Kayla: Of course it is. What-- what did you think? Oh, sweetie... you need to get some sleep.
Joey: I-I can't.
Kayla: No, you are exhausted. Come on, why don't you get in bed, and it might surprise you?
Joey: I can't let dad do this. He can't go to jail for murder.
Steve: All I know is what happened, roman. I confronted Ava. We got into it. She threatened Kayla again, and I went off. I start to smother her with a pillow. And then Joe comes in.
Roman: Wait a minute. Hold on right there. Joey was there?
Steve: He came in after. And...you know what? That must have been where the blood came from. He had some kind of cut or something on his hand. It was probably his blood.
Roman: Joey witnessed the crime? Joey put his hand on the pillow--
Steve: No, no, no, no. He came in at the end. He must have taken the pillow away from me. I-I don't really remember. Come on, roman. I'm confessing here. I mean, you--you don't need a witness.
Roman: But what if he was there?
Steve: You really want to make my son, your nephew, be the nail in my coffin? Why? You already got me. Please. Leave Joe out of it.
Chad: You are the scariest son of a bitch I've ever met.
Chad: My brothers were a close second. This family... is weird... creepy... exciting. It's an amazing thing to fall into. And lucky for you, my adopted father was a train wreck. Otherwise, I would have ran so far, so fast.
Stefano: You did.
Chad: At first. Yeah. And if it hadn't been for EJ's kids... especially Johnny... I might have never come around. I miss them. And Lexie. She was the best of us, all of us, me included.
Stefano: You are a good boy.
Chad: Yeah. Pissed you off, though, didn't it? Hm?
Chad: "Be a man. Be a DiMera." Like that was something to be proud of. You know, I never bought that. But I...I always did want to make you proud. It's a terrible feeling-- to look at your father and... feel like a pale substitute for what he really wants. For a son that he really wants. You know, that son that will take over the empire. Right? Nothing?
Stefano: I promised to listen.
Chad: I guess I know-- that's how I know you're really dead. You never listen. I mean, maybe in the end. André and Harold said that you had changed. You know, like, you'd given up. Did you? What happened to you? I-I need to know.
Chad: Because I don't... 'cause I don't know who to be... or how to be, and it's like there's a part of me that can't go on living my life unless I know.
Jennifer: [Laughs softly] Right. We kissed. [Laughing]
Eric: You don't remember.
Jennifer: Eric, if you were drinking, maybe--maybe you got confused, and maybe you thought that--
Eric: No, Jenn, I'm not confused. I remember kissing you. I know why you don't.
Kayla: I wish your father hadn't acted so quickly. You know, not about the murder, God help me, but just confessing.
Joey: It was wrong.
Kayla: I know that murder is wrong. I mean, there's never an excuse for it. I'm just saying that we could have helped him. Belle already said that she would represent him, and she would--she would really build a strong defense. I know it.
Joey: But he has no defense.
Kayla: Are you kidding me? Ava was a threat to our entire family. That's got to count. Lookit, listen. Listen. We have got to be strong, and we--we have to keep our hopes up, and... what happened to your hand?
Joey: I cut it.
Kayla: I can see that. How did you do that?
Joey: On a broken bottle.
Joey: I was at a party, mom.
Kayla: Well, it doesn't need stitches but I--but, you know, it really needs to be cleaned and bandaged and--
Joey: I-I had a bandage. It fell off.
Kayla: Joey. Your dad is tough. You know that, right?
Joey: It's not right.
Kayla: He has been in worse scrapes than this.
Joey: It's not fair.
Kayla: And hopefully we're gonna get the jury to understand that, and, you know, he--he was provoked. He felt that his family was in danger, and... Joey.
Joey: He can't do it. It's not right.
Kayla: Tell me what this is.
Joey: I-I-I promised. I promised dad.
Kayla: That you wouldn't tell me that something's wrong?
Joey: Anybody! But I can't! I can't let dad go to jail!
Kayla: Joey, we're gonna do everything we can to stop it. Come on, now.
Joey: Mom, Dad didn't kill Ava. I did.
Stefano: Did you ever feel that I loved you, Chad?
Chad: Right now.
Stefano: Ah, then it was worth the journey, wasn't it?
Chad: Journey from where?
Stefano: Do you think that I got away with everything? I mean, I thought it was a game, you understand? Now I am paying, and I will pay for all eternity in ways that I would never, never wish on you, my son.
Chad: I'm sorry.
Stefano: Don't be sorry. Learn. Learn one last thing from your father. Be the man that you want to be. There is nothing stopping you now.
Eric: Listen, Jenn, I showed up to your house. I was really blasted and I let you have it.
Jennifer: You let me have it?
Eric: Yeah. And we said some really harsh things to one another--
Jennifer: And then we kissed?
Eric: There's something else. It's very important.
Jennifer: And that was?
Eric: You finally admitted that you had a problem with your painkillers. Don't you remember? Listen, I promise, I am really past help, but you are not. You can still get help, and you said that you would.
Jennifer: Well, I don't remember any of this, and I think that you are very confused.
Eric: Jennifer, I am not confused. It sounds... like you had a blackout. I've done my research and it can happen with pills too.
Jennifer: That cannot be, Eric.
Eric: I promise you, nothing terrible happened.
Jennifer: I cannot believe this right now.
Eric: I know. I know it's scary.
Jennifer: This is amazing. You sound so sure that this is what happened.
Eric: Because I am. It's you, Jenn, because I know from my own blackouts. Jennifer, I have thought about it. That's what brought me here because I think we need to go to a meeting together. Okay? Listen. I know, okay, it's too late. Right now it's--it's too late. So...tomorrow. Tomorrow morning.
Jennifer: Yep. Okay.
Eric: What--what? Just...okay?
Jennifer: Yes. I am fine.
Eric: Are you sure?
Jennifer: Yes, I'm sure.
Eric: Because if you--if you want I-I mean, I, you know, I could stay here.
Jennifer: I don't need you to stay here. I have so much work that I need to get done. I am fine.
Eric: Okay. Fine. All right, then, um... all right, I'll see you tomorrow?
Eric: You know the first meeting is here tomorrow at the hospital, so I'll--
Jennifer: Okay. Okay.
Joey: I did it. I killed Ava. I was really drunk at a party, and I don't know what happened. I got so mad and I kept thinking of what she did to you and me, and then I went to the hospital and I saw her--
Kayla: No, no, no, just stop it! Just stop it! Just stop it! Just stop it! Do you hear me? You're upset!
Joey: And I--
Kayla: No, no, it's not true!
Joey: I did it!
Joey: I killed her!
Kayla: No! Listen to me. Listen to me. You never say this again. Do you hear me? Promise me that--listen. Promise me, do you understand?
Joey: It was my fault!
Kayla: No, promise me.
Joey: I can't let dad go to jail.
Kayla: No, listen, your dad was right. Listen. You're my baby boy and you're-- you're just not gonna go to jail. You're not. Lookit. Stop. Okay, look at me. Look at me. Your dad's already done it. It's done. Just let him do it. He has a plan, and we're--and we're just gonna let that play out. Okay? Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on. Listen, you promised your dad, and you need to promise me. Promise me that you will never say anything about this again. Do you hear me? It's not gonna leave this room. Do you understand me? Do you understand me? Oh, my God. Oh, Jesus. Oh, God.
Abigail: Hey, sleepyhead. Oh, hey. It's okay.
Chad: It's morning?
Abigail: Yeah, it's morning. Why didn't you come to bed last night?
Chad: I...I... I came down to... to have a drink and then I was gonna come back up. My father came to visit me last night.
Chad: Yeah, I fell asleep. It was probably a dream.
Abigail: But it didn't feel like a dream, did it?
Chad: That would be crazy.
Abigail: No. It's not crazy to me. My dad used to visit me all the time, especially the first year after he died, I... it was so sudden, and he... we had a lot of stuff that we still needed to say to each other. So I don't think it's crazy at all.
Chad: You are as scary great as Stefano was last night.
Abigail: [Laughs softly] So it was a good visit?
Chad: Yeah. It was. I feel free. Completely.
Abigail: Wow. Wow. Good. So what do you want to do now?
Chad: Go to Disneyland?
Abigail: [Laughs] Disneyland, huh?
Chad: Yeah. How about we plan an immediate wedding?
John: And Ava's dead? They're sure?
John: What? It's a legitimate question around here.
Belle: I'm afraid it's true. What?
Marlena: Well, honey, Ava has caused a lot of people a lot of pain--
John: Your mother is too kind to say it, but I'm not. Ava will not be missed. She's been pushing Steve to the edge, especially lately.
Belle: So you think there's mitigation?
John: Oh, I know there is. I'll go down to the station, see if there's something I can do to help them out, okay?
Belle: Tell Steve I'm right behind you.
John: Yeah, I will.
Marlena: And--and please call me.
John: You got it.
Belle: I need to talk to you.
Belle: So Steve's case is gonna be keeping me pretty busy for the next few weeks, so I called the judge this morning in Eric's case.
Marlena: I see. Have they set a sentencing date?
Belle: Not yet. I did talk to the clerk for a while, trying to get the lay of the land, and... I just think you need to be prepared.
Marlena: So you... you think he might have to go to prison?
Belle: He will have to go, and it could be for a long sentence.
Marlena: How... how long?
Belle: Eric could be in prison for the next...14 years.
Kayla: Uh, roman.
Roman: You were expecting someone else.
Kayla: I--no. I just--I...no. Come in. How's Steve?
Roman: Well, he was fine when I saw him last night. How are you holding up?
Kayla: I'm just a wreck. I can't believe this is happening. Well, so...can you tell me anything about the case?
Roman: Well, on the surface it seems pretty open and shut.
Kayla: What do you mean "on the surface"?
Roman: Why don't you tell me, Kay?
Kayla: [Scoffs] I don't understand.
Roman: Is there anything else about last night I should know?
Kayla: Um... I just--you know, I-I-- just what Steve told me. And...he wouldn't have any reason to lie to me, and... I mean, quite frankly I think that the world is a better place without Ava Vitali in it.
Roman: Well, all right, then. Anything you need?
Kayla: Maybe just go see mom for me.
Roman: Okay, I can do that.
Kayla: Don't tell her about any of this, all right?
Roman: Oh, no. No, no, no. I wouldn't do that. [Sighs] Call me. Get some rest.
Kayla: I'll do that.
Kayla: Bye. Joey? Joey, where are you?
Chad: So we have the caterer. We have the florist and the music.
Abigail: Yes. Mm-hmm. We have our best man, Rafe, and Gabi, the maid of honor.
Chad: Yes, that is settled. Look, it's not gonna be a big extravaganza, but if that is what you want, then that is what you will get.
Abigail: We don't need an extravaganza. This is exactly the wedding that I want, and that house has seen enough extravaganza in its days. Time to reclaim it and make it our own, right?
Abigail: Oh, hi!
Abigail: Are you just getting home just now?
Jennifer: Yes, I just had so much work that I had to catch up on and--
[Cell phone beeps]
Jennifer: Tell me! What is this big surprise?
Abigail: Well, we have finally picked a time and a date for the wedding.
Jennifer: Oh, that's great! I have St. Luke's schedule right here, so we can just--
Abigail: No, actually, we don't need it... because Chad and I have decided that we are going to get married at the DiMera mansion. [Chuckles]
Jennifer: The mansion?
Jennifer: Oh, when?
Abigail: Next Friday. [Laughs]
John: This alleged murder...
Steve: I confessed, John. Nothing "alleged" about it.
John: You need any investigation, just say the word.
Steve: I appreciate that.
Steve: Hey, belle, thanks for coming.
Steve: So where do we start?
Belle: Actually, you should hold on and wait until we're alone. Is the interrogation room free?
It's all yours for now.
John: Hey, roman, is this as bad as he says it is?
Roman: He was in the hospital room. He confessed. Sounds open and shut.
John: Hm. But at trial?
Roman: Doesn't sound to me like Steve wants a trial, and I'm sure that Justin will be more than happy to oblige.
Marlena: Oh, hey. Hello, what a surprise. Are you here to see a doctor or to see me?
Eric: Uh...neither. Actually, I'm--
Eric: I'm sorry. Someone I was waiting for.
Marlena: Is that your friend?
Eric: Uh, no, it's belle. It's about the sentencing. She has a date.
Marlena: Yeah. She mentioned that. Have--have the two of you had a chance to talk about it or discuss it?
Marlena: I'm sorry that I wasn't there. It must seem like a lifetime.
Eric: I'm--I'm sorry, huh?
Marlena: 14 years. Isn't that why you're upset?
Eric: Um, no, it's my friend. I'm worried. We were supposed to meet here this morning for an AA meeting, and...she didn't show.
Marlena: Okay, well, there-- there's another one in a few hours, I think.
Eric: Yeah, well, we said we were gonna meet here this morning.
Marlena: Eric? You can go on your own.
Eric: I know, but that would not help. Mom, listen to me. If I... if I tell you something in confidence like my doctor, would you promise me that it won't go any further?
Marlena: Of course I promise that.
Eric: This friend... I'm really worried about her. You know, and once I go to prison, I don't think there's gonna be anyone around who will understand what's going on.
Marlena: Okay, is she a drinker?
Eric: No, but it is a big problem.
Marlena: Eric... tell me who it is.
Eric: It's Jennifer Horton.
Marlena: Jennifer Horton has a substance problem? I've never even seen her take a drink.
Eric: No, it's not--it's not booze. It's the painkillers she's been taking since the accident.
Marlena: Are you sure?
Eric: I saw her high. Mom...we had a big confrontation the other night... and she finally admitted that she had a--she had a problem. You know I really got to make this right.
Marlena: Wait a minute, what?
Eric: I caused the accident, mom. I'm the reason that she was injured and why she's taking the painkillers in the first place.
Marlena: No, no, no, no, no. Listen to me. If Jennifer's having a problem after the accident, that is not your fault. And whatever she chooses to do with her life about her medication, that's up to her.
Eric: No, no, no, she can't even make that decision because she's in denial.
Marlena: Okay, well, then maybe her children will notice something's wrong, or--or Lucas.
Marlena: Lucas will certainly know the symptoms of--
Eric: Yeah, maybe, but he's not even in town. And I'd bet anything that her kids are--I bet they're clueless, because she's been trying to keep this under wraps.
Marlena: Okay. If it's as serious as you think it is, she won't be able to do that very long.
Eric: Exactly. Which is why I need someone-- I need someone like you... who knows what's going on... to keep an eye on things. Would you--mom, would you do that for me? Please--
Eric: Please, please.
Marlena: I would do anything for you.
Eric: Oh, God, you're the--
Marlena: But, honey--
Eric: Mom, thank you so much.
Marlena: I'm concerned about you.
Eric: Okay--yeah-- okay, listen. I have--I'm sorry, but I have to go. I have to check on Jennifer. I'll call you later, okay?
Marlena: Yep, yes, but--
Eric: Thank you, all right.
Marlena: Oh, honey.
Eric: You're the best.
Chad: Um, are you all right with that?
Jennifer: Oh, I guess I should ask you guys the same thing. I mean, kids, really, what is the rush? You have all the time in the world.
Abigail: Why should we wait, mom? We know that we want to get married and we are totally committed.
Chad: Yeah, and if--Jennifer, if she wanted a big wedding, I assure that's what I would give her. I mean, it's whatever she wants.
Abigail: This is the wedding that I want. But I could use your help... if you're willing.
Jennifer: Uh, yeah, just give me a list and I am on it.
Abigail: Do you think maybe you could do it with a smile on your face?
Jennifer: Yes, of course. Honey, of course, my goodness. If you're happy than I'm so happy.
Abigail: Okay, thank you.
Chad: Okay... well, I-I have to go meet the minister.
Chad: You'll got to the florist.
Abigail: Florist, yeah, okay.
Chad: Okay, bye.
Chad: Thank you.
Abigail: Mm-hmm. Okay, well, um... you know, really, mom, I think if we just split this list in half, it's gonna be a breeze.
Abigail: And you can totally get it done. I'll email you everything.
Jennifer: Great, okay.
Abigail: And...thanks. I'm having a wedding!
Jennifer: Yes! I love you, sweetie.
Abigail: I love you too, mom. Thank you.
Belle: Commander Brady, if you could get the paperwork ready, I'm gonna push along the arraignment and bail hearing.
Belle: Mm-hmm, pending trial.
Roman: There's a confession on record.
Belle: Mm-hmm, without counsel present, so you can forget that. We'll be pleading not guilty. This was self-defense.
Roman: Against a sick woman, pumped full of drugs, in a hospital bed? Belle, explain to me how that is self-defense.
Belle: I will. In court. So please have my client ready for arraignment and release. He's not going to prison for this.
[Pounding on door]
[Pounding on door]
Eric: Hey, the meeting?
Jennifer: I'm so sorry.
Eric: Listen, it's okay. There's another meeting in half an hour, I'll drive--
Jennifer: No, I can't make it, I can't make it.
Eric: Jenn, it's not far--
Jennifer: You don't understand--Abigail just told me that she and Chad are--are getting married next Friday, and I have a million things to do, and you're just gonna have to go without me. Please.
Abigail: Yeah, that's good. You take those two, and mom and I will split the rest.
Abigail: I think that's perfect.
Chad: I'm happy she's on board.
Abigail: I know. She seems like she's handling it pretty well.
Chad: Yeah, I saw a huge vein pop in her neck, but after that she was...
Abigail: [Laughs] Stop, she just wants me to be happy.
Chad: I'm on that.
Chad: Mm. What?
Abigail: You just... I don't know, you're just-- you--you really are free.
Chad: Yeah. Yeah, I am. Is that working for you?
Abigail: Definitely. Yes. [Laughs softly] Okay, I'm gonna run the rest of these errands while Thomas is still sleeping. We still have the babysitter for a few more hours, but I will be back... will you--you'll be okay, right?
Chad: Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna-- I'm gonna just clean up-- clean up around here.
Chad: Thanks for... coming by last night. It's good to be free.
JJ: Harold let me in. Where's Abigail?
Chad: You just missed her.
JJ: We need to talk to her.
Chad: About what?
JJ: It's Ben Weston. He escaped.
