Marlena: Uh, John, hi. It's me. Um... I just wanted you to know that, well, that Eric and Brady are both-- both doing well. I hope you are too. I hope you're all right. I'm sorry I'm not there, and I hope you're finding what you want to find in new Orleans. And you know what, listen to me. Your--your mother-- your mother should feel very lucky to have you back in her life. And she should feel very proud of the man you've become.
Vadim: Well done. Now, clean up this mess and go. I want to have some time alone with your son.
John: She's not going anywhere and neither are you, you son of a bitch.
John: I might not know anything about my past, but I will never unlearn the great skills you taught me so well. I smelled the drug you put in my tea. It never touched my mouth. Was anything you told me the truth?
Maude: All of it was.
John: My real name's John Robicheaux.
John: My father was a marine, died in Korea, you're my mother?
Maude: Yes, yes.
John: You gave me up for adoption, you're more than happy to give me up now?
Maude: Oh, no, I'm so sorry. You know these people better than I do. You know I had no choice.
Vadim: We don't want to kill you, John.
John: What do you want?
Vadim: We just want you to come home.
Rafe: [Sighs] I'm sorry.
Hope: Look, I--
Rafe: You know, I--
Hope: Sorry, I--
Rafe: No, just-- I thought, uh-- oh, my God, no, you were upset, and, um... I think we're just-- you know, we just--we got caught up in that moment.
Ciara: Hey, mom, I--
Ciara: What's going on?
Rafe: Oh, you know what-- what is going on is I just-- I came to check up on your mom and guess what. Guess what, the charges against your mom have been dropped. Huh? Is that cool?
Ciara: Yeah, it's great.
Rafe: That is so cool, right?
Rafe: Yeah. So, anyway, I should go.
Hope: Yeah. Uh, bye.
Rafe: Yeah, okay. Bye. Congratulations.
Hope: Thank you.
Hope: For everything.
Rafe: Yeah, you're welcome. You're welcome. Bye.
Ciara: So, uh... charges were dropped?
Ciara: How'd that happen?
Hope: Complicated, honey.
Ciara: So you and Rafe were, like, celebrating?
Hope: What do you mean?
Ciara: I mean, when I walked in, you guys jumped apart like you were doing something that you didn't want me to see.
Hope: [Laughs] Uh, no. We, uh-- actually weren't doing anything.
Ciara: Okay. Well, you guys were, like, two inches apart. Mom, you can tell me the truth. Are you falling for Rafe?
Hope: [Laughs] What?
Theresa: He just untied your dress. Show him how you feel about that.
Jacob: Oh, that's amazing. Fantastic. Keep on doing just that. This is hot.
Kate: As hot as Antarctica in July. Okay, so we're working on overtime now. Is this the best that you can do?
Jacob: What would you like to see, ms. Roberts?
Kate: [Sighs] Well, first of all, this is supposed to be a high fashion ad, not a high school yearbook. And for the record, the sexual chemistry between the two of you, I'm not buying it at all. At all.
Theresa: Nicole, welcome back.
Hope: I mean, seriously? I mean, Rafe's my partner and a good friend. That's it.
Ciara: You sure about that?
Hope: Oh, my God, seriously, are we having this conversation right now? I-- I can't even think about being in a relationship right now. I'm not ready to fall in love. Actually, I'm not sure that... I ever will be.
Ciara: Well, that's not always something that you can control.
Hope: And how would you know about that?
Ciara: Okay, I've never been in love.
Hope: Good. Good, because I was really afraid that I had missed something maybe.
Ciara: But I remember you talking about coming back from boarding school when you were about my age and you and dad, like, hated each other's guts.
Ciara: And look how that turned out.
Hope: Oh, my God, no, no, no, no, I do not hate Rafe's guts, and I am not falling in love. End of story, okay?
Ciara: Okay, maybe not, but if you could have seen the look on his face when he left, I'm not sure he feels the same way.
What can I get for you?
Rafe: I'd like a beer, whatever you've got.
Eduardo: Put that on my tab. If that's, uh, all right with you.
Rafe: I don't see why the hell not.
Be right back.
Eduardo: You want to-- you want to join me?
Rafe: Well, what the heck.
Eduardo: You look good.
Eduardo: So... yeah. You know, I'm a pretty good listener. You--you might remember that about me. If so, it's probably the only thing you remember. [Chuckles] But, uh... I don't know. You want to-- you want to talk about what's wrong?
John: I'm not going anywhere with you.
Vadim: You're hardly the first who's tried to leave, but when your classmates got the occasional itch, you were always the one who persuaded them to reconsider.
John: Get up!
John: Both of you, get up.
John: I know you heard me, but I don't think you're listening, so I'm gonna communicate with you in the only language you understand.
Maude: Oh! [Cries]
John: Don't you move. I don't know if you're really my mother...
Maude: I am.
John: And I don't care!
John: You may have given me birth, but you also just-- just gave me away.
Maude: No. I--
John: My whole adult life, I've had this ache, I've had this--this--this emptiness, this longing just to know who I am and where I came from.
Maude: Look, John.
John: No, you hear me out. You owe me that! And now I know. Now, I know... that I never needed you at all.
Maude: No! [Crying] Oh, please. Oh, John. Oh!
John: You weren't worth worrying about for a second. So I won't spend another minute thinking about you.
Maude: Oh, John. Oh, please.
John: Don't--don't--don't start that crying. Maybe my father was a good man. I sure hope so, because I want to hold on to that, but that is all.
Maude: Please, there is so much more I could tell you. If you're taking your father's things, don't you want to know more about him?
John: I don't want to hear another word out of your mouth. And don't come after me, 'cause I don't ever want to see that face again.
Maude: [Crying] Oh, John. Oh! [Crying] sweetheart, I know everything
Hope: Let's sit down for a second. Sweetheart, I know everything seems a bit uncertain right now, but whatever you imagine is going on in Rafe's head, honey, I just told him that I'm not going back to the force. We won't be partners anymore.
Hope: Because I realized that I was so wrapped up in trying to get justice for your dad that my obsession was unhealthy. I was putting the people I love so much in danger. And, honey, you were right when you begged and pleaded with me to let it go.
Ciara: I was?
Hope: Mm-hmm. I have never been more sure what's most important in my life. My first priority has to be you and chase.
Ciara: Has to be?
Hope: Is. Hey, let's change the subject. Why don't I order pizza, and tonight, the three of us can hang out, talk. What do you think? Chase's favorite pizza's pepperoni, right?
Ciara: Yeah, I guess.
Hope: Well, we don't have to order pizza. I could cook. I--
Ciara: No! No.
Hope: [Laughs] I don't blame you. What's wrong?
Ciara: Nothing. I just feel like we're about to get grilled.
Ciara: Did you check my grades online? Did you see that I got a "d" in precalc?
Hope: "D"? You got a "d" in precalc?
Ciara: Mom, mom, if quitting your job means that your mission in life is to be a helicopter mom, then I am totally not on board.
Hope: Hold on a second. I'm not gonna be that bad, I promise you, unless, of course, you gave your mother a reason to be.
Ciara: And what if I do? Kidding. Just kidding.
Hope: Ciara. Baby, you only have one parent. I grew up without my mom, and I don't want the same thing for you.
Ciara: I couldn't stand it if that happened to me.
Hope: I could take up a hobby, I suppose. What do you think?
Ciara: How about cooking?
Hope: Cooking? Seriously? Oy. Um... [Laughs]
Ciara: Yeah, I could--
Hope: I could give it a try.
Ciara: I could download some recipes for you.
Hope: Maybe we could do it together?
Ciara: Yeah, I'd like that.
Hope: I would love that, my beautiful girl. I love you.
Ciara: I love you too.
Eduardo: Of course, if you don't want to talk about it, that's okay too.
Eduardo: Oh, yeah. But I noticed that you haven't told me to go to hell.
Rafe: Well, that's 'cause you're obviously not going anywhere. Even though I wish you would. I've decided you're not worth the fight. Gabi seems okay with having you be part of her and Ari's life, and I've got bigger battles to fight.
Eduardo: Yeah, the ones you don't want to talk about. I feel you.
Eduardo: Sometimes words-- what the hell, they just get in the way. Sometimes it's better just to sit with somebody and have a drink.
Rafe: You realize you still haven't told me anything about yourself. I mean, for instance, like what you've done for the past 20-plus years, ever since you ran out on our family.
Kate: [Clears throat]
Theresa: I think we should capitalize on Kate's high school yearbook idea.
Kate: No, no. That wasn't an idea.
Theresa: Oh, hear me out. It's nostalgic, it's fun, and it appeals to our target demo.
Kate: If our target demo was 60.
Theresa: You wear basic black designs, do you not? And you have more disposable income than anyone else in this room. Right? I rest my case.
Kate: Okay, fine. Let's give it a--let's give it a whirl.
Nicole: Don't be nice on my account.
Kate: I wouldn't dream of it.
Theresa: Paul, stand behind Gabi.
Nicole: Now, pretend you just pitched a no-hitter. [Laughs] Okay, a little less fierce. Perfect. Yes.
[Camera shutter clicking]
Nicole: Great, Gabi. Okay, Gabi, turn away from Paul. Look over your shoulder at him. Paul, turn your face slightly, great, yes, so we can see the clean lines of the design. Love it. Okay, Paul, just put your hand now on the nape of her neck. Like, gently, though. Just a little bit up. Wait, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Up, nice, okay. Go. Perfect.
Jacob: My, you've got an amazing eye for detail.
Nicole: Oh, yeah, I've been on both sides of the camera. Try not to look too gorgeous. I know it's a tall order, but we want people to see the clothes too. [Laughs]
Kate: Okay, good. Let's take five.
Theresa: Nicole, I'm really glad that you're here. If you're sure you're ready.
Nicole: I'm not. Actually, I feel like I should be in bed eating rocky road for the rest of my life, but, um... I'm a survivor and I know that this is what Daniel would want.
Gabi: How long have you been here?
JJ: Long enough to see how talented you are.
Gabi: Oh, it does not take talent to--
JJ: You really have no idea how gorgeous you are, do you?
Gabi: [Laughs nervously] No.
Eduardo: I tend to not talk about the past too much, because I'm ashamed.
Rafe: Oh. You know, they say a man who... doesn't face his mistakes is doomed to repeat them again.
Eduardo: If I could do anything to change that, I would, but I've got no choice at this point except to focus on the here and now. Try to be grateful for what matters to me, Gabi and Ari and you.
Rafe: Sounds like a man who's hiding something.
Eduardo: Yeah, I've done some things that I don't feel comfortable talking about. You probably know about that. I'm sure you've got some... secrets here and there, something that you need to keep buried.
Hope: Rafe, wait.
Hope: You can still walk away.
Rafe: No. I'm not walking out of here. I want to be here, okay? Come on.
Hope: Where are you taking the body?
Rafe: Somewhere where no one will ever find him. Yeah. I do.
Rafe: They'll never find him down here. They're bringing this building down.
Hope: [Grunts] I only regret that I dragged you into this mess.
Rafe: I don't regret it. Not at all. This was my choice. I'm here for you. I want to be tied to you, no matter what it takes.
Hope: Hey. Wow, that was really fast.
Ciara: Yeah, it's never fast when you want it to be. Chase texted. He said that his coach is making him run extra laps.
Ciara: So he'll be home in about an hour.
Hope: All right, we'll put some aside for him for later. I have to admit, though, this is a little nice to have some girl time.
Ciara: Yeah, it is.
Hope: Yeah. So aside from-- here you go, sweetheart.
Ciara: Thank you.
Hope: Aside from that "d" we won't talk about right now...
Hope: Tell me what's happening in school.
Ciara: Well, chase is having kind of a hard time since his dad died.
Hope: Yeah. I'm sure he has.
Ciara: Yeah, he thinks that he needs to prove himself that he's a nice guy. You know, nothing like Aiden.
Hope: I'm so sorry that he feels that way.
Ciara: Yeah. Oh, hey, mom.
Ciara: I was wondering...
Ciara: Could I invite some friends over tomorrow night?
Hope: You mean like have a party here?
Ciara: Mnh-mnh. More like a-- more like a kickback.
Hope: A kickback?
Ciara: Yeah. You know, like, hang out, chill, relax.
Hope: Oh, all right, because, um, that word has a different connotation in my line of work. Whoops, sorry. Former line of work.
Ciara: Yeah, I know. So?
Hope: Sure, why not?
Hope: How many kids do you plan on having?
Ciara: Oh, just--just a few.
Hope: I probably should have waited to order pizza for tomorrow, shouldn't I?
Ciara: Actually, you don't need to worry about feeding us.
Hope: Of course I do.
Ciara: Actually, I was kind of hoping that you'd go out for a couple of hours. You know, do something nice for yourself, maybe watch a movie.
Hope: Do something nice for myself. You trying to get rid of me?
Ciara: Yeah, kind of.
Hope: [Laughs] I shouldn't be worried, should I?
Ciara: Of course not. Don't you trust me?
Hope: Most of the time.
Hope: I'm just being honest too. I was your age once. A long time ago.
Marlena: Oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh!
Marlena: Oh, I didn't expect you home so soon! Gotta send those guys home, I guess.
John: Yeah, how's Eric?
Marlena: Didn't-- didn't you get my message?
John: No, no.
Marlena: Oh. Well, um, wow. He--he and Brady are both doing well.
John: All right.
Marlena: Yeah, Eric's white cell count is--is down and, um, his heart function is improved.
John: Oh, that's great. That's great.
Marlena: Yeah, I know. How was your--John, John, John. John, you're trembling.
John: No, no, no, no.
Marlena: You are. Put that down. Come sit with me. Come on.
Marlena: Tell me what happened.
John: I met my mother. We, uh--we had some tea, and she seemed like a sweet, old lady that was so sad she had to give me up for adoption.
Marlena: She seemed like?
John: She was working for them, doc, and she tried to drug me.
Marlena: Oh, no. Honey, are you sure it was your mother? I mean, maybe Eduardo lied.
John: When I pretended to be unconscious, another man walked in the room. He referred to me as her son. There's no reason for them to lie when they thought I couldn't hear.
Marlena: Well, maybe they were--
John: Doc, when I looked at her... there was something in her eyes. My gut tells me it's all true.
Marlena: Oh, honey, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry your mother did that to you.
John: Well, she said she didn't have a choice, but, uh, we all have a choice, don't we?
Marlena: What do you think they want?
John: Kidnap me, turn me into a killer again. You know, when I walked into that room, I was-- I was hoping for the best, but I was... expecting the worst, but, God, I'm so lucky that they trained me as well as they did or I wouldn't be here right now.
Marlena: What are we going to do? They've come after us--
John: Let them come. Now, I know I'm ready.
Theresa: Yeah, I couldn't be happier with these shots.
Nicole: We have to capitalize on the momentum we got from the launch, and I think this is gonna do it for us.
Kate: I agree.
Paul: Hey, sorry to interrupt.
Gabi: It's okay.
Paul: I was wondering if I could ask you guys a favor. Jacob asked me out for a drink, and I don't want to turn him down because I have to work with the guy, so... well, he's a little, uh... enthusiastic.
Gabi: Did you want us to come with you?
Paul: Well, at least nearby, in case I have to make a hasty exit. I mean, if you guys don't have any other plans.
JJ: No. No, no.
Gabi: No, yeah, we don't. We'd love to hang out. Right?
JJ: Yeah, cool.
Rafe: You at least answer one question for me?
Eduardo: I'll do my best.
Rafe: Did you leave because-- 'cause of us kids? Did we drive you crazy? Or was it because you didn't love mama anymore? Or both?
Eduardo: Oh, Rafe, neither. It-- all this time, you-- you thought I--
Rafe: Yeah, of course I thought.
Eduardo: Oh, no, man. I-I loved Adriana more than she probably even knew. I loved her. I loved you and your brother and sisters. I swear to God I did.
Rafe: Well, what was it? Well, what the hell was--why would you do that to us then? Why--I just-- [Sighs] I need one reason from you, okay? That's it, I just need one. One thing that I can believe. If you ever want to have a relationship with me, I need that.
John: I took my name off a plaque on the wall. I called myself John black. What do you think, somewhere deep down inside, I always knew my name was John? John. John Robicheaux. I need to know who changed my identity.
Marlena: And what do you think you'll gain from that?
John: I'm not the only one this has happened to. This has been going on my whole life, and it needs to stop. I need to be the one to stop it.
Marlena: Well, that's an admirable goal and what if they find out about it?
John: I'm already on their hit list. I might as well see this through to the end.
Kate: So I'll call the magazine and I'll let them know how it went.
Theresa: What are you going to say?
Kate: So I'll call the magazine and I'll let them know how it went.
Theresa: What are you going to say?
Kate: That the spread should be on the cover.
Theresa: Nicole, thanks again for everything. How are you doing?
Nicole: Okay. I went to visit Brady before I came here.
Theresa: Yeah, I know. I saw the two of you together, but it looked like you were kind of having a moment. I-I didn't really want to interrupt.
Nicole: It's just really intense seeing him, knowing... he has Daniel's heart inside his chest.
Theresa: Well, it's intense for Brady too. I mean, Daniel was a great friend to him and, uh... I think he just feels so guilty.
Nicole: Oh, I don't-- I don't want him to feel guilty. I don't know what I would do if I lost Brady too.
Theresa: [Laughs nervously] You two dated before, right?
Nicole: Eons ago. Why?
Theresa: Did he tell you that he's been dreaming about you?
Jacob: And she kept saying, "my face is in the shadow." And I couldn't just say, "that's an artistic decision so no one has to look at it."
Jacob: Hey, thanks for being so great to work with.
Paul: Yeah, back at ya.
Gabi: Hey, did you still want us to stick around?
Paul: No, I'm cool. Go ahead.
Gabi: Okay. Oh, JJ and I are gonna head out. We have someplace to be, so... have a good night.
Eduardo: Wait, I was younger, I was lost, you know? A sick sense of machismo. I equated being macho with being a man.
Rafe: So leaving us was macho?
Eduardo: No, it was the biggest mistake of my life.
Rafe: So you did it to eve and Paige too. It's not helping me.
Eduardo: Rafe, Rafe, Rafe.
Rafe: Okay, it's not--
Eduardo: Let--let me-- did--did I ever--
Eduardo: Did she talk to you? Ever? Did your mom talk to you about what it was like when we met? How we met?
Rafe: Well, she-- she said you guys met at a gallery exhibit, Diego Rivera.
Eduardo: Diego and-- and Frida Kahlo. We were both enthralled with that love story. It was a great love story.
Rafe: It was more like a tragedy.
Eduardo: Well, it was--the two are not mutually exclusive. I think it was Shakespeare that pointed that out. When I saw your mother, I-- she was the light. She had a fourth grade education, but she was brilliant. She had a hunger. She was driven to learn. She instilled that in her children.
Rafe: Yeah, she did. Yeah, I'd really rather you let me pay for these.
Eduardo: You know, please, no, I mean, you know, it's the least I can do. Just--just this once. I mean, I'm sure this won't be the last time we have a beer together.
Rafe: One day at a time, okay?
Hope: When Shawn was your age, I was--I was happy to see him grow up and become independent and become a man. But you're my baby girl, honey.
Hope: I hate the idea you don't need me anymore.
Ciara: Who said I don't need you anymore? Sometimes I wish I could climb into your bed when I have a nightmare.
Hope: Oh, you can still do that.
Ciara: But sometimes I do need my space. Like the other night when I was hanging out with Claire, you texted me, like, 30 times.
Hope: Ciara Alice, you had just been kidnapped. You can't blame me for being overprotective. The world's a very ugly place.
Ciara: That's true, but it's also a very beautiful place.
Hope: Yes, it is. Living with chronic migraine
JJ: So why did you tell Paul and Jacob that we had someplace to be?
Gabi: Well, I didn't want to bore you with all that model talk.
JJ: No, no, you weren't boring me.
Gabi: Don't lie. Don't lie. I--to be honest, I was bored too.
Gabi: Yeah. Yeah, I just-- we were talking, and I was just looking at you and I just was thinking about doing this.
Paul: Well, I should get-- get home, get some beauty sleep.
Jacob: Well, you don't have to worry about that. Paul, listen, I know you're used to living in the spotlight, but this is a whole new ball game.
Paul: Yeah, I've noticed.
Jacob: The fashion world never sleeps, you know. You need to get out there, meet the players. I'm on my way to a party that would blow your mind.
Paul: [Laughs] Yeah, well, that's pretty hard to do.
Jacob: Well, this will do that. If you hate it, you can just leave.
Paul: Fine. Let's go.
Jacob: All right.
Nicole: What kind of dreams is Brady having about me?
Theresa: No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up. I'm sure this is all very... hard for you to talk about.
Nicole: You know what? People are afraid to talk to me about Daniel because they think I'll get upset, but I-I would die if I didn't talk about him. It's the only memories I have left. That and... the comfort in knowing that there's a part of Daniel that's still alive... in Brady.
Rafe: It didn't mean anything.
John: Thanks for meeting me.
Eduardo: Did the lead pan out?
John: My father's military medals.
Eduardo: Well, that's great.
John: My mother tried to kill me tonight.
Eduardo: I'm sorry to hear that. I wouldn't have encouraged you to go if I had known that could happen.
John: Now I know where I stand. Do you know this man?
Eduardo: That's Vadim Constantine. He's a bad son of a bitch.
John: Yeah, I told him so.
Eduardo: Then good for you. Very few people walk away from an encounter with that man in one piece.
John: Yeah, I got that impression.
Eduardo: Mm-hmm. But you understand if you've humiliated the master teacher, he will come after you with all he's got.
John: Well, that's exactly what I'm counting on.
