James: Whoa. Thank you, Lucy. Yeah, bye. All righty, I've cleared my schedule for the week.
John: Sounds good. How's Eric?
Marlena: His EKG showed improvement.
John: Means the antibiotics are doing their job. That's good.
Marlena: Yeah. At least for the moment. John?
Marlena: How long do you think it will be before the police press charges?
John: Well, sweetheart, I'm surprised they haven't done that already. Who knows, maybe roman pulled some strings.
Marlena: I'm actually pretty concerned about Eric. I know him so well, you know? He will be harder on himself than any judge or jury can be. And if he doesn't want to get well, he just won't.
[Quiet knock at door]
Jennifer: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to wake you up.
Eric: Wasn't sleeping. I was praying.
Jennifer: I can come back.
Eric: No, please. Stay.
Jennifer: How are you feeling?
Eric: How am I feeling? Thank you for asking. If anyone deserved to die in that accident, it was me.
Jennifer: Eric, I--my car was in that accident, too, and I slid on ice, and I lost control.
Eric: That was something you couldn't help. I made a choice to drink and drive. Something I'm gonna have to live with for the rest of my life.
Theresa: Hi. Listen, Maggie, I just-- I just wanted to say, again, how sorry I am about Daniel.
Maggie: Thank you.
Theresa: You know, if anything ever happened to Tate, I--I just wouldn't be able to-- I'm just so heartbroken for you and... oh, Victor.
Victor: What the hell are you doing here?
Parker: My dad fixed Fluffy. Why couldn't anybody fix my dad?
Brady: [Groaning] Ugh! [Grunts]
Fynn: Tomorrow we're gonna get you up and out of bed.
Brady: Oh, my God. Are you serious?
Fynn: Well, the longer you stay in bed, the greater the risk of blood clots and infection.
Let's try some more.
Brady: All right, all right. No, I can't--that's--I can't.
Fynn: Okay, can you come back in two hours?
Fynn: [Clears throat]
Brady: So what are you gonna have me do next week? A mile run?
Fynn: I'm gonna push you to your fullest potential. If you think I'm asking too much of you...
Brady: No. No, you're not. I--I want to make the most of this. I owe this to Daniel. He was like a brother to me, you know?
Fynn: Not just you, mate.
Brady: Do another one.
Brady: Go ahead.
Maggie: Victor, Theresa came by to pay her respects.
Victor: I'd have a lot more respect for her if I didn't have to look at her.
Victor: She tries to make this all about her. Never mind that it's all her fault.
Victor: You heard me. Brady quit his job at Titan because you pressured him. He was afraid he'd lose his child... just like you got rid of Melanie.
Theresa: No, that's not true.
Maggie: Victor, what does this have to do with anything?
Victor: Brady quit his job at Titan, but that wasn't enough for you. I understand you got him a gift. A nameplate for his desk at Titan. What's the matter? He wasn't making enough money for you?
Theresa: No. No, I just--I wanted to--
Victor: You were determined to have him undermine me, but that's not what Brady wanted to do, so he left the gift behind, and then he was afraid you'd think him ungrateful, so he turned the car around.
Theresa: Oh, God.
Victor: That's right. That's when he got hit. If it wasn't for you, Brady wouldn't be in the hospital recovering from a heart transplant. And Daniel wouldn't be dead.
Victor: And don't come back!
Maggie: Victor, please! Does it make you feel better? It doesn't make me feel any better. And we all know that... it's not gonna change a thing.
Jennifer: If you ever need to talk, I'm here, okay?
Eric: Thank you. I appreciate that.
Roman: How are you doing, Jennifer?
Jennifer: Um... I'm good. Thank you.
Roman: Good. Well, be sure and take care of yourself, okay?
Jennifer: I will.
Roman: Well, that was nice of her to come by.
Eric: Those flowers she brought... just take them to the pediatric ward to somebody who deserves some cheering up.
Roman: Seems to me, you need some cheering up.
Eric: I'm not having a pity party for myself. I want to atone for what's been done. I'm sorry you're the one who has to deal with charging me. Don't feel bad for one second.
Roman: Hey, let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Eric: I want justice to be done for what I did. I'm not gonna slight Daniel's memory by hiding behind presumption of innocence. I deserve to pay for taking a life.
Roman: You listen to me, okay? Listen to me closely. What you need to do right now is focus on getting better. Do you get that? You understand that? We'll talk about this another day. And know this: When it comes time to deal with this, I will do everything possible--
Eric: No, dad, I don't want any favors. No, dad! I don't want your favors because I don't deserve them.
John: Hey, look, I've-- I have something for Eric that father Francis gave me. I know that he's fighting some demons right now. I thought it might comfort him to know he's got someone powerful in one of his corners.
Marlena: Thank you. You know... when you offered to give Brady your heart, that was such an incredible act of love. It made me realize that I-- I just don't want to be without you. I don't want to live without you.
John: I'm right with you on that one. Let's go see our boys.
Eduardo: Oh. Hey. Sorry, I didn't-- I've come at a bad time.
John: Got some news?
John: Now, doc, this isn't gonna take very long. You want to go ahead, and I'll meet you there soon? It's okay.
Marlena: All right. I love you.
John: Love you.
Eduardo: Heard about your son's accident. I was very sorry to hear about that.
John: Thank you. We're hopeful both young men will make a full recovery.
Eduardo: I'm sure you're eager to get to the hospital, so I won't take up much of your time.
John: How was your trip?
Eduardo: It was productive. I was able to neutralize the threat for the time being, at least.
Eduardo: Yeah, I think so. And I have some information that you've been looking for for a very long time. I know who your mother is.
Eve: Oh, Theresa! Oh, my gosh, I heard about your fabulous fashion show, and I'm so sorry I missed it! I was out of town, but I just-- what's wrong?
Victor: I'm sorry, Maggie. Last thing I want to do is cause you more pain.
Maggie: I know.
Victor: I'm going to the hospital to see Brady. Do you want to come?
Maggie: [Sighs] Well, I would, but... I'm waiting for Nicole. We need to-- we need to start making... funeral arrangements for Daniel.
Victor: Why don't you let me do that for you?
Maggie: Thank you, no. This may be the last thing I get to do for my son. And I need to spend some time with Melanie. You understand, right?
Nicole: You know what, Parker? Your dad was really good at fixing people who were sick. Did you know that he gave his heart to help someone else? So that means he's still with us in the lives of people he helped, and especially with you. Can I have a hug? I could really use one. Oh, my goodness. You are the best hugger in the whole world.
[Knocking at door]
Nicole: Uh-oh. What kind of casserole do you think it is now?
Nicole: [Laughs] Oh, Melanie, hi.
Roman: Hey... Eric just fell asleep.
Marlena: I'm glad you're here. I want to talk to you.
Marlena: When Eric gets out of the hospital, what will the charges against him be?
Roman: [Sighs] I assume that he'll be charged with vehicular manslaughter. I wish there was something I could do, but the law's the law, and I have to uphold it.
Justin: So do I.
Justin: My heart goes out to you and to everyone involved in this tragedy, but given the circumstances, we have to avoid any appearance of special treatment.
Roman: Hey, nobody is asking for special treatment here, least of all Eric.
Justin: Good, then you've made him understand that he will be facing jail time.
Marlena: Justin, do you understand that he is months away from recovering from this infection? I mean, he isn't even out of the woods yet.
Justin: I--I understand that.
Marlena: And because of his past service to this community, I would hope that would mitigate his sentence.
Justin: Well, given Daniel's past service to the community, Eric should be prepared for the maximum penalty.
Marlena: Justin, there were a number of cars involved in the accident, and I know--I know that Eric made a mistake, but isn't it possible that somebody else was to blame?
Roman: Doc, Eric failed to yield. He was at fault. He is culpable, and he will have to answer for Daniel's death.
Chloe: Well, Parker was just showing me his new train set, his pogo stick, and all his awesome, cool toys. Pretty sure that Daniel must have bought out FAO Schwarz.
Nicole: Actually, you can blame that on me.
Chloe: Oh. Well, I'm not sure how I'm gonna fit in my apartment one little boy and all his toys.
Nicole: We'll figure it out.
Melanie: Yeah, no, whatever you need help with, just let us know, okay?
Chloe: Thank you. But let's not worry about packing right now. I know you need to get over to Maggie's.
Nicole: I know, we-- we were supposed to see the caterer this week to taste desserts for our reception, and now we're picking out funeral music. [Sobbing]
Eve: Oh, God, I...
Eve: I can't believe I didn't hear about this. Wow, Daniel always seemed like a guy who would be around forever.
Theresa: Yeah, he did. I just--I feel really bad that I gave him a hard time, you know? I mean, Brady would be dead right now if it wasn't for Daniel's heart.
Eve: I know this has probably been a rough couple of days, but everything's gonna be okay, right?
Theresa: I don't know. I mean, Victor--he was nice to me for the first time today, and then he told me that this is all my fault.
Theresa: Yeah. Well, Brady was on his way back to the fashion show because I had given him this gift, and he wouldn't have been on the road if I hadn't, so...
Eve: Oh, come on, come on. Don't be ridiculous here. I mean, you're not gonna let that old kook get to you, are you?
Theresa: Just, what if he uses it to get between Brady and me? You know? And Brady finally told me that he loves me.
Eve: Well, that's wonderful. Okay, look. He had to choose between you and Victor--who did he choose? He chose you, sweetie, because he loves you.
Theresa: Yeah, well, you never thought so before.
Eve: Well, it only matters what Brady thinks, and besides, I mean, Victor Kiriakis is no match for you. In fact, I think he should just hang it up and let the next generation take over.
Theresa: [Laughs] Well, speaking of, how are things going with Justin?
Eve: Well, I don't think they are, really. He's nowhere close to being over his ex, and I don't think he ever will be.
Justin: Adrienne. Hi, it's me. Sonny asked me to talk to you about some legal documents that he needs for the club, and I was wondering if you got the results from your second mammogram. I hope everything is okay. Please call me when you have a moment. Thanks.
Eduardo: This is her name and her phone number.
John: You sure it's legit?
Eduardo: I'm as sure as I can be.
John: How'd you get it?
Eduardo: I bargained for it. These people who put that price on your head... what they most want you to do is stop investigating Winterthorne. I told them you don't care about their covert training facility.
John: That's a fact.
Eduardo: You just want to find your parents. I said, if they could facilitate that, maybe come up with some contact information, you'd stop asking questions.
John: And they just believed you?
Eduardo: Well, they shared the info. I mean, given that I turned my back on their organization, I'm not sure how much they trust me. I certainly don't trust them, but I do think that I bought us both some time. Hopefully, enough time for you to figure out what it is you really need to know.
Justin: Hey. You okay?
Eve: Yeah, I'm just... just read that article about that awful accident on new year's eve. It's just unbelievably sad.
Justin: Terrible. Can I get you anything stronger to drink?
Eve: No, but... I'd actually love not to be alone right now.
John: What did you mean by you have just bought time for both of us?
Eduardo: Well, I don't think we should kid ourselves. They wanted me to kill you. Instead, I'm your new best bud. They probably just offered up this woman's name to appease you, make you think they'd backed off.
John: Well, then, I guess we'll just both have to watch our backs.
John: I'm not convinced this is real. I've been led down this garden path too many times before.
Eduardo: Well, I'm confident, somehow, that it is. But, you know, you can call it or choose not to call it. It's up to you.
Eduardo: And, with that, I'm gonna let you get to the hospital. I hope your son gets well real soon.
John: Thanks. Hey, and... thanks again for everything.
Eduardo: Yeah. Glad I could help.
Maggie: Your dad was so proud of you, my darling. Of the wonderful young woman that you had become.
Melanie: [Sniffles] You know, the last time he talked to me, he said he was gonna come visit me with Nicole and Parker. I missed them so much.
Maggie: I know. I know that. I shouldn't have moved away, Grandma. I should've never left.
Maggie: Oh, honey. Oh, listen. You did what you thought was right. Your father respected you, and so do I. Now... no regrets, okay? And no guilt.
Maggie: Let's just focus-- focus on those sweet memories and the love that you shared for him, for your dad. Please, will you do that for me?
Melanie: Yeah, of course.
Melanie: Of course, of course, of course I can do that.
Nicole: Sorry to interrupt.
Maggie: Oh, it's okay.
Melanie: No, you're fine.
Maggie: It's okay. Yeah, sit down.
Nicole: I-- I just talked to the funeral director, and, you know, I told him I didn't care what color satin was on the inside of Daniel's...coffin. Oh, my God, are we really having this conversation right now?
Maggie: Okay, you know what? Ugh... I can call and get the funeral director to decide, okay? [Sighs] Okay. Maybe we can just start with the reception.
Nicole: Yeah, I want it small; I just want family and close friends.
Maggie: Daniel touched so many lives. I understand how you feel, Nicole. But we don't want to let people not have the opportunity to...
Nicole: To make you feel better about counting how many people came to pay tribute?
Melanie: Nicole, I don't think she meant it like that.
Nicole: I know. I'm sorry, Maggie. It's just, I just can't grasp the idea of standing there next to Daniel's coffin, trying not to cry while a thousand people parade by trying to figure out how to make us feel better. "I'm so sorry," and, "only the good die young," and, "oh, you know what? At least Daniel saved Brady in the end." I can't--I can't-- I can't do it! I can't just stand here trying to figure out if we should have shrimp cocktail or crab cakes afterwards. I can't--I can't do it. I don't want to be planning a funeral reception right now! I can't do it! I'm sorry. [Sobbing] I know this is hard. I know this is hard for you, and I'm not trying to make it any harder, but I cannot do this right now. I'm sorry, I just can't.
Maggie: [Sobs] Ohh. [Sobbing] It's so hard for everyone.
Eduardo: Hi, don't mean to interrupt, but just wanted to let you know that I'm back in town.
Eve: Well, that's really great, because I have a million and one questions about the music program.
Justin: Well, actually, I've got to get to work, so you can talk right now.
Justin: Any chance that you're free later for dinner?
Eve: I think I am.
Justin: Terrific. I'll call you.
Eduardo: Dinner? That's a bit of a step up from having coffee. Things getting serious between you and the D.A.?
Eve: You know, Eddie, if we're gonna be working together, I'd really prefer to keep our personal lives out of it, okay?
Eduardo: You're right. Of course. Let's talk business.
Nicole: [Stammers, crying] I'm sorry. I'm having a really hard time keeping it together here.
Fynn: Of course you are. You don't have to say anything. I just thought maybe you'd need some company.
Nicole: [Cries] You want to know what would really help?
Fynn: What's that?
Nicole: Talk to me about Daniel. I want to hear about the life he lived before I met him... so I don't have to think about his death. [Sobs] Even if it's just for a little while. Oh, God. [Sobbing]
Eve: On Christmas Eve, I was actually able to sing a carol. Can you believe that? I never thought I was gonna be able to do that again.
Eduardo: I wish I'd have heard it. I've always loved listening to you sing.
Eve: Please. I was never a Streisand.
Eduardo: Yeah, well I wouldn't have wanted you to have been a Streisand.
Eve: Anyway, I'm very happy, and I'm very excited to be able to help kids learn music. You know, Paige and I were just so different, but music was one thing that actually connected us, you know? And wait till I tell you about my new protégé.
Eduardo: Protégé? Do tell.
Eve: Yes, I will. Okay, her name is Claire Brady. She's still in high school, but oh, my gosh, Eddie, she has this, just, raw talent. It's unbelievable. And her family, I don't think are really encouraging her, but I think she can actually be something, and I want to be the one to help her make her dreams come true.
Eduardo: Well, may that come to pass.
Eduardo: It's nice to see you looking forward to something again.
Eve: Well, it is nice to have something to look forward to.
Eduardo: I can't wait to hear Claire sing.
Eve: Eddie, thank you for giving me something to invest in again, for making me feel useful.
Fynn: Daniel was the most talented surgeon I ever worked with. During his residency, he used to practice suturing on chickens.
Fynn: Not live ones.
Fynn: He was already the best of the bunch of us, but he worked ten times as hard. He was always pushing me to be better. A better doctor, better person in general.
Nicole: He made me a better person too.
Fynn: You know, I knew Daniel better than most people, and I never saw him as head-over-heels as he was with you. He truly loved you.
Nicole: [Sobs] Thank you. Thank you, Fynn.
[Knock at door]
Victor: Look, Thompson tells me you're making very good progress.
Brady: Dr. Thompson is kicking my ass.
Victor: Well, I think it's time now we look forward to your discharge. I would like you to move back into the mansion. Now, before you say anything... you're going to need extensive rehabilitation. Lots of room for all the equipment. I'll see to it that you get the very best. So please...come home.
Brady: Wow, you said "please." I don't know, grandfather. It's not my home anymore.
Victor: Don't you think it's time we buried the hatchet? You're my grandson, and I love you more-- I'll do anything to help you get your life back.
Brady: As long as it's a life without Theresa, right?
Jennifer: Theresa? Are you okay?
Theresa: Yeah, of course I'm okay. Why wouldn't I be? Brady's gonna be fine, and I'm the lucky one. You know what? Daniel was your friend. Everybody loved him.
Jennifer: Not everyone.
Theresa: Yeah. Everyone but me and a select few others, but... now he's gone, and... it turns out it's my fault.
Kate: Well, hello.
Eve: Hi, Kate. Well, I am going to get going.
Eduardo: All right. You okay?
Eve: This is about as good as it gets these days. Have a good day.
Eduardo: See you soon, yeah?
Eve: You too.
Kate: So how did that trip go to wherever you went?
Eduardo: Oh, ringing in the new year in Paris... got to be good, right?
Kate: I don't know. I've never had the pleasure.
Eduardo: Really? Well, we'll have to take care of that next year. I'm really sorry that I missed the basic black launch. I heard it was an epic success.
Kate: Who told you that?
Eduardo: Everyone. Maybe if I take you out to dinner, you can tell me all about it.
Eduardo: You're gonna make me work for this, aren't you?
Nicole: Hey, Chloe. Parker, hi. What's going on?
Chloe: I told him that he's coming back to Chicago with me, and he just threw a fit.
Nicole: He did?
Chloe: Yeah, I mean, he says he wants to stay here in Salem with you.
Jennifer: What do you mean, Theresa?
Theresa: Agh... just what I said. [Sniffles] I'm the reason that-- that Daniel's dead.
Jennifer: You're not.
Theresa: No, it turns out... look, Brady and Daniel, they were on their way to our house to celebrate the launch of our fashion line, and I'd given Brady a present, and he left it behind, and so he turned around to get it, and if he hadn't, then he and Daniel wouldn't have been on the road, so I put them at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Jennifer: No, honey, you didn't. I was in that accident too. I was involved. Do you blame me?
Jennifer: Then you need to be kind to yourself. And I know that we're not friends, but I want you to hear me--really hear me. If you are lucky enough to find someone that you love so very much, do not waste the time that you have together. Do you hear me?
Victor: This is about your recovery.
Brady: No, it's not. It's about you getting me away from Theresa. Are you even thinking about my son in any of this?
Victor: Of course I am. We both know damn well he'd be better off without--
Brady: Stop, stop! You're not even giv-- you're not even giving her a chance. You never have. Why can't you just give her a chance, Granddad?
Victor: She's the one that gave you the gift that made you turn that car back the night of the accident. Her attempt to undermine me is the reason Daniel is dead. And you almost died.
Brady: I know you're grieving. I'm grieving. So I'll excuse any twisted logic that you're trying to use to make Daniel's death Theresa's fault. It wasn't. The road was slick, it was dark, and it was late. If you really need to point the finger, we all know who the person is that's to blame.
