Stefano: Don't fight it, John. You cannot escape. You're mind belongs to me now. You are my pawn. You have no identity, John. No past. It's gone. All gone. [Laughs] [Breathing heavily]
John: [Mumbling] Johnny Black. 1985. [Breathes heavily] Oh, no. Oh, no. Honorable to die, sir.
Marlena: Honey, I'm home.
John: Take my own life, sir.
Marlena: John, are you th--
Marlena: Oh, my--John! No!
Marlena: Paul. How good to see you.
Paul: It's good to see you too.
Marlena: Now John tells me you're on a promo tour with mad world?
Paul: Yeah, I'm pushing the Narita product line.
Marlena: Oh, and how'd that go?
Paul: Well some of it was okay. Some of it was-- [Scoffs] It was the worst. [Laughs]
Ben: You sure that's all you want?
Abigail: Mm-hmm, yeah. The doctor said a lot of little meals will help with queasiness.
Ben: Ah, well you weren't queasy when we were, uh--
Abigail: No, I'm just being careful.
Ben: 'Cause if you weren't in the mood--
Abigail: Ben, I was in the mood.
Ben: Okay. I'm just saying, I'd understand if you weren't after what I told you.
Abigail: I get it, okay? I mean, you should have told me when you first put the app on my phone, but I know that you just did it because you wanted me to be safe.
Ben: I promise you I'm gonna be the best husband in the world and the best dad. There's nothing I wouldn't do for you and our kid.
Abigail: I know that.
Ben: [Inhales] Oh, so my dad told me that the pictures of the house that he bought for us.
Ben: They're up on the real estate page of the Salem spectator website. Do you mind if I check my e-mail?
Abigail: No, go ahead.
Abigail: I wanna see 'em too, actually.
Abigail: Ben, what's wrong?
Ben: It's just a headline. Stefano's DiMera's in the hospital. He had a heart attack.
Aiden: Don't you dare die. Not until the job I'm doing for you is finished and I get my money.
Stefano: Mr. Jennings. Your so-called debts are the last thing on my mind. You are on your own.
Aiden: No, no, no. I'm not on my own, see? Hope Brady said yes, you're getting what you want. So when I'm walking down that aisle, I better be debt free. So just keep that thing beeping until you settle up.
Hope: You want to go chasing after Bo?
Steve: Bo is the best friend I ever had, and no one, not even you, can convince me that he turned his back on his family--
Hope: Steve, I felt exactly the same way you do for a long time. I had to accept that I was wrong. And you need to do the same thing.
Steve: I don't know how to do that.
Hope: Well I have something that might help you.
Aiden: Do you hear me? We had a deal. [Sighs]
Chase: Hey, Dad.
Aiden: Hey, guys. What are you doing here?
Chase: We're here for our check-ups.
Ciara: To play sports.
Chase: Remember, dad?
Ciara: I saw you come out of Stefano DiMera's room. Does mom know you were in there? 'Cause Stefano-- he's a really bad man.
Hope: There's something I want to show you.
Kayla: You don't have to prove anything to him, all right?
Hope: I know. I want to. Would you please get the letter?
Steve: What is that?
Hope: A letter John brought to me almost-- almost two years ago. It's from Bo. I think even you will have to agree the hand-writing as his and it's the last time I heard from him. Got so upset, I tore it up.
Steve: Looks like you went to a lot of trouble to tape it back together because you couldn't throw it away? I think we both know why.
Abigail: [Sighs] Stefano DiMera is diabetic. It makes his chances for heart attack higher.
Ben: Did Chad tell you that?
Abigail: No, I work in a hospital, Ben.
Ben: You look upset and I know it's not about that old man 'cause you always tell me how much you can't stand the guy. All right, look, we said we're starting over and I told you I trust you and I am never going to do anything behind your back again. You promised me you'd stay away from Chad.
Abigail: I know. I meant it.
Ben: Good. I'm gonna head to class. You gonna be home later?
Abigail: Yeah. I'll be here. I'm just working from home today.
Ben: Okay, good. Then I will see you later.
Aiden: Well I'm a lawyer. I know who all the bad guys are in town. See, uh, Mr. DiMera's son, he is my client, so I had to talk to him about the case.
Ciara: So you have to talk to bad guys a lot?
Aiden: Sometimes, they're even my clients, but the law says it's still my job to help them the best way I can, so--
Ciara: That must be hard.
Aiden: It is, but, you know, it's the right thing to do.
Chase: I heard kids talking at school today about those two ladies that got murdered. Are you working on that case? You know, I really can't talk about--
Ciara: Wait, you said Mr. DiMera's son is your client? That would be Chad and he's my friend Theo's uncle. He'd never murder anybody.
Hope: I know what you're thinking about. Why I pieced this letter back together and kept it, but you are totally wrong. I'd thrown it away, Steve. And then I realized, "you know what? This decision just doesn't affect me." It affects his children and you. And his mom and his whole family. And if this were his last communication, then they had a right to read it... as do you. Here.
Steve: [Sighs] "Dear fancy face, I know you must be pretty upset with me right now. Please try to understand I have no choice. I have to see this to the end. [Mumbles] It's gonna take me-- I love you and the kids more than anything in this world and I promise I'll do everything in my power to come back to you as soon as possible. Love you always, Bo."
Kayla: See what to the end? You want to know what's so important that he'd leave his family? He doesn't even bother to tell his own wife.
Steve: I'm so sorry.
Hope: Steve, I'm sorry, but you have to accept that he chose whatever he was working on over us. It's right there in black and white.
Steve: This letter isn't anything like the ones Victor got. This really does sound like Bo. I owe you both a huge apology.
Kayla: What do I have to do with it?
Steve: I read the letter. See hope's face. Makes it crystal clear what I put you through.
Kayla: Well hope and I are trying to give up our weakness for guys with a wild streak. Never turns out the way you think it will.
Steve: I shoulda been there. I shoulda been here to talk him out of this mission, whatever the hell it is.
Abigail: You couldn't have talked him out of it. He was frustrated, Steve. He was frustrated with his life. Frustrated with his job. I don't know, maybe... maybe he was bored with me.
Kayla: No, come on.
Hope: Could be.
Steve: I can't believe that it had anything to do with you. Look at me. You are the love of his life. I know that.
Steve: That's what you used to say about me.
Steve: I still do. I really am sorry.
Kayla: Uh, that was weird.
Hope: Yeah. He did seem sorry, but you were married to him. Do you think he'll give up the idea of trying to find Bo?
Kayla: [Sniffs] Not for a minute. [Sighs]
Paul: [Sighs] So you remember what happened when will and Sonny and derrick and I went out together?
Marlena: Oh, yeah. Those drunks with their gay slurs-- how could I ever forget that?
Paul: Yeah. Well people called me names when I was pitching. You know, if I gave up a home run or something, it'd just roll off my back, but, I mean, I wasn't ready for the kind of hatred that I felt that night.
Marlena: How could you be? I'm so sorry that happened.
Paul: No. It get's better, I know, but, I don't know-- it just makes me wonder why I put myself in that kind of spotlight?
Marlena: You did it for the kids. So they could start to feel good about themselves, about who they are?
Paul: Yeah, I tried telling myself that, but it was a hard sell. [Chuckles] I don't know. I just wish I had a friend talk me down.
Marlena: I know who you can call 24/7. Your father.
John: So the agency thinks this contact might really have a lead? Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Well, that sounds like a start. Yeah, yeah, I definitely want his number. Do you have it?
Aiden: I can tell you're really worried about Chad, but I'm gonna do everything I can to prove he's exactly the man you think he is.
Ciara: Great, but I still think you should stay away from Mr. DiMera.
Kayla: It was you?
Aiden: Ah, hey, ladies.
Kayla: One of my nurses said that somebody was in Stefano's room drilling him. I never thought it would be you.
Ciara: He's Chad's lawyer.
Kayla: Stefano isn't allowed any visitors.
Aiden: Yeah, well I thought it'd be a comfort to him to let him know that I'm doing everything I can to help his son, which is my job.
Kayla: Well my job is to make sure that my patient doesn't have another coronary, so please stay out of his room, all right? Come on, you guys. Let's get you cleared for soccer, okay? Here you go.
Aiden: All right.
Hope: I think you're in trouble.
Aiden: I think you're right.
Abigail: No. No, there is no way I am letting you do this.
Steve: Hey, Joe.
Steve: You're looking a little down, son. What's up?
Joey: First day at the new school.
Steve: Mm. Well it's not so new, is it? Some of your old buddies might be still there.
Joey: I don't know if you could call them buddies anymore.
Steve: Yeah. Listen, I know it's hard for you coming back here. It's hard for me too.
Steve: Yeah. So, you know, if you need to talk. I'm here. I'd like to help you any way I can.
Joey: Are you serious?
Steve: Of course I am.
Joey: Does that mean you're, like, actually gonna stick around for mom and me this time?
Hope: So, did you get some answers from Stefano?
Aiden: No. No, no, no. He fell asleep while I was talking to him.
Aiden: So how's working going for you?
Hope: Oh, my gosh. It is so fantabulous.
Hope: So amazing having Rafe back. We have a pretty heavy workload though.
Aiden: Two murders in one week, I'd say so. Any new developments?
Hope: Nice try.
Aiden: Why, what do you mean "nice try"? That is no different than you trying to pump me for information about Stef--
Hope: Excuse me, that's not-- okay, no, you know what? I was just kind of concerned for him, that's all.
Aiden: Concerned, really?
Aiden: Why, because you're so fond of the guy? [Chuckles] No, but I will tell you one thing. It's very weird to see him so weak and frail.
Hope: Why would it be weird? You've never laid eyes on him before, have you?
Chad: I don't know what you think you're doing, but you need to leave.
Abigail: Don't do that. I texted you when I heard about your dad and you didn't respond, so I had to come here to see you and-- [Sighs] Even though I just promised Ben I would stay away from you.
Chad: You know, Ben had the right idea.
Abigail: Well I'm glad that I'm here. Someone had to stop you from ruining your life.
Chad: Excuse me?
Abigail: What are you doing? You're taking off? You're running from the cops?
Chad: What else can I do? I was so drunk, I don't remember what happened with Serena and I was in the same condition when Paige was killed.
Abigail: Chad, there has to be someone who saw you when those murders happened. I mean, Aiden, he can hire an investigator to find a witness.
Chad: He did! The guy isn't coming up with anything. Okay, now I know you don't want to believe I could kill anyone. Believe me, neither do I, but that doesn't change the fact that Serena and I got into an argument and people saw her slap me in the face right before she was murdered! Or that Paige saw me following her out of the club that night! Or that a petal from a rare flower in my father's garden was found right next to Paige's body. Add all that up, plus the fact that I don't have an alibi, Abby. It doesn't matter whether you or I believe I could kill anyone because I look like the guy who it. [Sighs] I'm all out of options, Abby.
Abigail: Maybe you're not.
Paul: I mean, I thought about calling John too.
Marlena: And what stopped you?
Paul: I've dumped enough problems on him already and he hardly knows me.
Marlena: He feels like he's known you for years.
Marlena: What? This is a man who lives for the opening of baseball season. He's always talking about, you know, fabulous games you pitched and your era?
Paul: No, I mean-- well that Paul Narita's history. All I talk to him about now is-- dealing with prejudice and losing endorsement deals. [Laughs]
Marlena: Sounds like you're learning to live a whole new life. Different kind of life. John knows a lot about that.
Paul: Does he?
Marlena: He had to face a lot of adversity in his life.
Paul: When he was my age?
Marlena: No. Younger.
Paul: Well he must have had his parents to help him with that?
Marlena: John didn't have the luxury of knowing his birth mother and father.
Paul: He never told me that.
Marlena: You should talk to him. Please. Would do you a lot of good and I promise you it would do him good as well.
John: Got your name from the ISA. Did you get my text? It's a digital image of an old newspaper article about a kid that drowned by the name of Forrest Alamain. Yeah, great, great, look-- the reason I'm calling is 'cause I'm trying to track down the cop that investigated that case. Can you help me out? That's what I wanted to hear. No, no, no, no, no-- you just keep right on digging. You find everything you can find out.
Aiden: Ah, no, I'd never met Stefano DiMera in my life, I just, um-- got a pretty vivid picture of him from Chad and didn't square up with that old man I saw in the hospital bed, so--
Hope: Well don't underestimate him. He has more lives than the proverbial cat.
Kayla: Oh, hey.
Hope: There they are.
Kayla: The only thing these two little rascals have is serious sweet tooth. Here you go. It needs to be taken care of pronto.
Hope: Hey, sweetheart.
Aiden: Thank you so much.
Kayla: Uh-huh. I'll talk to you guys later.
Aiden: All righty. All right, so this "sweet-toof." What's the best way to remedy that, hmm? Maybe some ice cream?
Ciara: That would help.
Ciara: But what we really want to know is your secret, right chase?
Aiden: The s-- oh, well, we'll talk about that a little later on, all right?
Steve: Yeah. Well, sounds like you don't have a whole lot of faith in me.
Joey: I mean, I give you credit for wanting to try again. But I think it's a little late for the whole father-son bit.
Steve: No, man. It's never too late. At least I hope not. And your sister's all grown up, you're not. So if you need to tell someone Salem High sucks, you can talk to me. Huh? I can speak to your mom. If you want to be reinstated in that boarding school?
Joey: That's not what I want.
Steve: Okay. Well Salem high it is, then.
Joey: Looks like it. I don't think the family's exactly gonna throw a party. [Scoffs]
Steve: Why do you say that?
Joey: Well for one thing, aunt hope was trying to act really nice to me and I got in her face. Told her she's not family anymore because she divorced uncle Bo. I don't even know why I said that.
Steve: Well, maybe because you're 16 years old. Bo is the one who left, so your aunt hope, you know, she waited. She waited a long, long time. And that Aiden Jennings dude came along and offered her something-- chance at a new life and she decided that's what she wanted.
Joey: I don't get it. Why would uncle Bo just split?
Steve: The ISA has all kinds of ways to make you want to come back in.
Joey: He's part of the ISA? Just like you were?
Steve: Yeah. And I know your mom thinks I went to work for them because I was bored with my life with her and you kids, but that's just not true. There were other reasons.
Joey: Like what?
Steve: I can't get into that. So I'll tell you what. Next time you see your aunt hope, try apologizing to her.
Steve: She's a forgiving person and she loves you.
Joey: What about you? Think mom's ever gonna forgive you?
Kayla: 3%. Who let that happen?
Kayla: Uh... wow. Hmm.
[Knock on door]
Kayla: Uh, come in. Hi!
Joey: Hi. Um, I have to buy a bunch of supplies for Chem lab. Can I have some money?
Kayla: Uh, they make you buy your own supplies?
Joey: Budget cuts.
Kayla: Oh, well, yeah. I hear that. Well tell me how was school?
Joey: It was okay. [Laughs] How come you put that picture out again?
Kayla: Uh, well-- I was looking for my phone charger in my desk. It was in the back. I don't know why-- here, is that enough?
Joey: God, dad's hair. It's like a mullet.
Kayla: Oh, he never had a mullet. My hair on the other hand-- I don't know what I was thinking.
Joey: Dad's tux, it's like-- looks like one of the-- what was that group you guys used to make us listen to? The temptations. [Laughs]
Kayla: Uh, yeah. I guess his tux does kind of look like that.
Joey: I ran into him today.
Kayla: Your dad? What did he have to say?
Joey: We talked about stuff.
Kayla: Mind if I ask what kind of stuff?
Joey: I mean, you're gonna find out anyway. [Sighs] I acted like a jerk to aunt hope.
Kayla: Oh, she told me that you were pretty upset.
Joey: So you already know. Yeah, but dad and I already talked about it. I'm gonna tell her I'm sorry.
Kayla: Did he help you understand why you said what you said?
Joey: I thought she dumped uncle Bo for that other guy, but dad told me it was uncle Bo's fault. That he left her just like dad left you and me. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but it seems like dad's starting not to act like such a--
Joey: I mean, at least when it comes to his family.
Chase: So, what's the big secret?
Ciara: I think I know.
Hope: I mean, it's just an idea. Could be wrong.
Aiden: Hmm. Well, maybe, we should act it out?
Ciara: Is this going to be embarrassing?
Aiden: Oh, come on now. You survived seeing your mom and me dancing at the St. Luke's gala, right? You even recorded it on your phone. Did I happen to mention he's the, uh, budding martin Scorsese over here. Sure is. So I think it makes sense for you to record this for posterity too.
Ciara: What's posterity?
Hope: It has to do with wanting to keep a record of times you want to remember.
Chase: Go for it.
Both: Hmm, hmm.
Ciara: $5 says this is gonna end with them kissing.
Chase: I'm not betting with you again. Like, I always lose.
Hope: You ready?
Aiden: I've been ready for this for a long time.
Ciara: You better be recording this.
Chase: Five, four, three, two--
Aiden: Hope Williams Brady, will you marry me?
Hope: I would love to marry you.
Ciara: Told you.
Chase: Who cares? They're getting married!
Aiden: Yes, we're getting married. Come here. Ah.
Hope: Of course, you want to see the ring. [Laughs]
Paul: I have to go. I have a meeting with mad world.
Marlena: I am so glad I ran into you.
Paul: Yeah, me too.
Marlena: You know, you really helped me put stuff into perspective.
Marlena: Any time, 24/7.
John: Hey, you're back, you're back. How'd your trip go?
Marlena: I told you he'd want to know about that.
Paul: Yeah, but I've got this meeting.
John: Oh, that's okay.
Paul: Can I call you later?
John: Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure.
John: Look forward to it.
John: Something bothering him?
Marlena: Oh, I think he'll tell you about it when he calls you. I know he feels very lucky to have a father like you in his corner.
John: And I'm very lucky to have a woman like you in mine.
Marlena: [Giggles] What was that for? Not that I mind?
John: I had a good morning. Are you having some luck?
John: I did. I think that, uh, maybe I'm finally on the right path to finding my parents.
Chad: What are you thinking?
Abigail: That the big problem is your memory. If you could remember what happened to you during those blackouts, than you could defend yourself, right?
Chad: I'd have a shot, yeah.
Abigail: Ever heard of hypnotherapy? Sometimes when you're hypnotized, things come back to you. You remember things. Maybe dr. Evans could help you.
Chad: I'm not dragging her through this mess or you either.
[Machine whirring, beeping]
Aiden: Ah, mm.
Ciara: So when is this happening? Have you picked a date?
Hope: Well actually, we were thinking maybe-- very possibly we'd do it during the Salem bicentennial celebration.
Chase: When's that?
Hope: November 9th.
Ciara: Of this year?
Aiden: Yes, that's right. This year.
Ciara: Then we have lots to do. Have you looked at dresses? And shoes? And who'd coming to the wedding?
Hope: Don't worry. Oh, my gosh, you are like a little Julie. We will get it all done, I promise.
Ciara: Starting right now. I saw the most perfect dress that would look awesome on me. Let's go, come on.
Aiden: All right, all right.
Hope: Oh, my gosh.
Chase: Sometimes, I just do not get her.
Aiden: Yeah, well you better figure her out 'cause she's gonna be your stepsister. [Chuckles]
Chase: That is totally cool.
[Cell phone vibrates]
Kayla: You know, um, I haven't said this to your dad, but I'm starting to think that maybe his coming back-- maybe it means something.
Joey: Like what?
Kayla: Well your father always had this need to be a daredevil, but he always liked coming home, too. Don't tell him what I'm about to say, okay? But maybe if I had spent less time getting mad at him or getting my feelings hurt and more time trying to accept that his is just how he is. I mean, it doesn't mean he doesn't love us, right? I mean-- I think he does. Why else would he keep coming back?
Joey: Maybe because even when you had big hair, dad was hot for you.
Kayla: Argh! [Giggles] Muah. I love you.
Steve: Hey, John.
John: Hmm, hey--
Steve: Marlena, I'm sorry, I don't mean to interrupt.
Marlena: Oh, you're not. In fact, my apologies, I have to handle something. Excuse me.
John: All right, be careful.
Steve: [Sighs] Sorry, man, I really need to talk to you about something.
John: No, sit down. Sit down.
Steve: Hope showed me the letter you brought back to her from Bo.
Steve: I read it. It definitely sounds like him. It's his handwriting. But I still can't wrap my head around the idea that he'd abandon his family. I just can't.
John: Yeah, well, it surprised me, too, but he was working undercover.
Steve: Doing what?
John: I don't know.
Steve: John, did Bo put that letter in your hands.
John: No. After I met with him, the letter was delivered to the hotel room a couple hours later.
Steve: When you saw him, did you ask you take a letter?
John: He never said a word about it. Now, look... after the last time we met, I started doing a little digging.
Steve: What'd you find?
John: Not a damn thing. And by that, I mean it's as if Bo never worked for the agency.
Steve: Are you kidding me? What do you make of that?
John: I'm not sure. I'll tell you what I hope didn't happen-- that the mission went south and the ISA is just covering it up.
Abigail: Chad, come on. I mean, you have to at least think about it.
Chad: No, I don't. If I see a shrink, it's gonna look like I'm gearing up for an insanity defense.
Abigail: How do you know that?
Chad: Because my lawyer already suggested it.
Abigail: So seeing a therapist might make you look guilty, but running away won't? Chad... look at me. You are not thinking this through. This is your life we're talking about here. Please. Try to find out if Marlena will see you. I mean, there could be a chance that you could find out what happened during these blackouts. You have to at least try. I'm pretty sure that Marlena will do this without anyone knowing about it. Please, Chad.
Ben: Abigail? Abigail? She's marrying you. She's carrying your baby. You can trust her. You have to trust her.
