Episode #12665 ~ Aiden makes a mysterious phone call & reveals an ulterior motive; Rafe questions Chad about his involvement with the murder victim.
Provided By Suzanne
Oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God. Are you all right? Oh, my God, I was so scared.
Steve: Hello, sweetness.
Kayla: Oh, baby, are you all right? I--I was so afraid. I got--the school called me.
Kayla: Oh, geez.
Steve: New rule, no public displays of affection.
Kayla: Don't give me tips on parenting.
Kayla: Are you all right? Let me look at you. What happened? Why--why aren't you at school? And what are you doing here?
Steve: I brought your boy back.
Aiden: Every day I've fallen more and more in love with you. Hope, I never want that to end.
Hope, will you marry me?
Aiden: Hold out your left hand, and I'll slip it on your finger.
Hope: I don't know what to say.
Aiden: Well, how about "yes"?
Hope: I just, I--[Giggles]
Hope: I had no idea.
Aiden: Come on, my heart is on my sleeve. You must have seen this coming. What--
Hope: No, I-I didn't. I just--I really, um--
Hope: I just--I really wasn't expecting this.
Ben: So here is your no fat pomegranate/green tea swirl with hot fudge and rainbow sprinkles on top.
Abigail: Thank you very much.
Abigail: God, I feel like that took forever.
Ben: Yeah, two whole minutes.
Abigail: Hey, cravings are impatient.
[Cell phone rings]
Ben: Ugh, my phone's been blowing up all day.
Abigail: I turned mine off.
Ben: It's so weird that I saw Serena the night she was killed. She and Chad were having a high old time. Emphasis on "high." Sure seemed like they were getting along like a house on fire.
Abigail: I-I don't want this.
Ben: But still, I just can't help wondering, I mean, if it wasn't Chad who killed her--
Abigail: Ben, we've been over this, okay? I just know that Chad couldn't have killed anyone.
Ben: Yeah, not sober. Don't you remember what my dad said? Abigail, Chad was drunk. And he was a mean drunk. So how do you know he didn't just lose control? You know? Revert to DiMera mode?
Abigail: I just do.
Ben: Well, I don't. I wonder if the dude even has an alibi.
Rafe: So it wasn't a date.
Chad: I've already told you, no. I-I-I barely knew her.
Rafe: She just happened to sit next to you. Nothing planned. But you pretty much spent the whole evening together, didn't you?
Chad: You already know all of this.
Rafe: And you were drinking the whole night, weren't you? Told the bartender to leave the bottle?
Chad: Yes, and you know that too.
Rafe: You and Serena, you pretty much just bumped into each other, and spent the night drinking scotch, neat. And that's all that happened between the two of you?
Or... was there something more?
Kayla: You know, Mr. Lyness, I'm not saying this is anyone's fault. I--ugh--at least... no one at the school's fault. I'll be in touch later this week, and we can talk about him coming back. You have a good night too. Thank you. That doesn't mean that I don't think this is a "no fault" situation. You and I are going to talk.
Steve: I'm sure we will.
Kayla: [Sighs] Now that the school is taken care of--
Joey: It's time to deal with me, right?
Kayla: You know, I-I-I just have a couple of questions. You know, like, why on earth would you leave school without telling anybody where you were going? And why would you drop in on your pretty much absentee father's doorstep in new York city? Do you know that you scared the hell out of me--
Kayla: Or maybe you don't even care about that.
Steve: Kayla, I think that maybe I should be the one to field these questions. Joe, why don't you go get yourself something to drink, huh?
Joey: Do I have your permission?
Steve: Kayla, Kayla. I know we need to talk, but could we go someplace a little more private?
Chad: I know what you're trying to do. Trying to rile me up so I say something to incriminate myself. But guess what, there's just not that much to say. After drinking admittedly way too much, ms. Mason and I parted ways. I don't know where she went.
Rafe: Well, we sure as hell know where she ended up.
Chad: But after she left, I went for a walk in the square. I needed to clear my head... to sober up.
Rafe: Mm-hmm. So last time that you saw Serena was when she left the club?
Chad: Yeah, I told you. I didn't see her again after that.
Rafe: Right. So... how'd you get the busted lip? Hope, you look like I just sprung something on you, l-- I wasn't trying to catch you off-guard. I want you to know that I, uh--
Hope: I know that.
Aiden: Okay, but you're... you're so surprised, you almost look scared.
Hope: No, it's nothing like that. Aiden, I love everything that you did to make tonight special. And it was, it--
Aiden: It was? That's past tense, right there--
Hope: No, no, no. It still is. It's just that I sincerely, truly, didn't see this coming. I didn't, at all. Marriage is--it's a huge step. And, for me, the, um... proposal, the ring, just... seemed to come out of left field.
Aiden: I guess I'm better at hiding my emotions than I thought. [Laughs softly] Look, I-I have to say, I-I--you know it's-- we've been through so much, I... I just assumed that you were ready to take our relationship to the next level. But that isn't necessarily the case. Is it?
Abigail: Why does he need an alibi? There's no proof that he did anything at all that night.
Ben: Well, that's not what my dad said, but--
Abigail: I mean, after he and Serena left the bar.
Ben: Well, he's a DiMera. They don't always show their true colors in public.
Abigail: Ben, can you stop, please? I know that you don't like the guy, and I get why. I really do. But can you stop using this poor girl's death as an excuse to trash him, please?
Chad: Oh, you--you--this?
Rafe: Yeah, that. That's what I was asking about, when I asked about your busted lip, Chad. What else could I have meant?
Chad: Right, sure, yeah. No, last night I, um... I busted my lip last night. You know, I already told you that I got really drunk. And, you know, I woke up with this. I don't really remember how it happened. I probably just, you know, I bumped into something.
Rafe: Huh. Well, it must have hurt... a lot. So you don't remember?
Chad: Ah, look, you know, I was just--I was so drunk that I don't... I don't really remember, you know?
Rafe: [Clears throat] Right. So I'm gonna ask you again. Chad, do you have any history with Serena mason?
Chad: Um, and again, I'm gonna tell you "no". Last night was the first time we've ever talked. End of story.
Rafe: Yeah. Certainly wasn't the end of her story, wasn't it? [Scoffs] But you have to admit, for the first time that you ever met, you talked a lot.
Chad: Yeah, and drank a lot. Look, you know, the-- the both of us, we kind of had a stressful day.
Rafe: So she was in a bad mood?
Chad: Yeah, you could say that.
Rafe: And you were too. So I guess what I'm asking, Chad, is did any of that spill over in the long conversation that the two of you had? Was there any tension? Or ill-will? You'd remember that, wouldn't you?
Steve: Ah, nice digs. Oh... "dr. Kayla Brady," huh?
Kayla: Yeah, that name means a lot to me, "Brady".
Steve: I know. And "Johnson" doesn't, right?
Kayla: Sure it does. It's my children's name. But, uh, I really can't imagine that's what you want to talk to me about in private here.
Steve: Well, uh... I thought you wanted to chew me out, so, um... I figured you'd want to raise your voice.
Kayla: You are the same as always.
Steve: You're looking mighty fine yourself, sweetness.
Kayla: Would you mind telling me just how it happened that Joey ended up unannounced on your doorstep in new York city? That's not exactly walking distance from his school.
Steve: Yeah, well... [Sighs] Yeah, that was my fault.
Kayla: I kinda guessed that.
Steve: You see, Joe and I have been, um... we've been in touch, for a while now.
Kayla: He never mentioned that.
Steve: Well, you know, I think there's a pretty good reason why.
The humble potato. As we lawyers say-- [Laughs softly]
Hope: Aiden, I'm sorry.
Hope: I don't want to hurt your feelings.
Aiden: No, no, no. Listen, you didn't. You did not hurt my feelings. Okay, I made a mistake. I can see that you were really nonplussed by the ring...
Hope: No, no, I--
Aiden: The question, and...
Hope: I was just surprised.
Hope: That's all.
Aiden: It's because I rushed things, so... without the pressure of a proposal in the air, I'd love to make my case.
Hope: [Laughs softly]
Aiden: Hope, simply put, you are amazing. I've never known another woman like you. Someone who seems to... to know and understand who I really am. Look, when I came to Salem, I was a real, real jerk, and--
Hope: Well, I wasn't exactly the welcoming committee.
Aiden: Well, no, no, like me, you...you had your guard up. We're both very protective of our kids. But maybe somehow, through it all, you grounded me. Look, I was basically living to take care of my son. And then you--you... you made me see that life is really worth living. [Laughs softly] And, hope, I... I really want to share the rest of my life with you.
Hope: And the feeling is mutual.
Hope: Aid... when I divorced Bo, I, uh... I felt defeated. That I'd failed. I love you. And I do want to be with you, but I need to be sure. Not just for me, but for Ciara, that this is the right thing for her as well... and for you and chase.
Hope: So, um... for now--
Hope: Will you take a "maybe"?
Aiden: I will take a "maybe." I will take a "maybe." And I-I promise--
Aiden: I will not pressure you for an answer.
Hope: Thank you.
Aiden: [Clears throat] I think I will pressure you--
Aiden: For one last dance.
Hope: You do love to dance, don't you?
Aiden: Oh, I love to dance... only with you.
Hope: Oh, Mr. Jennings.
With every touch with every move my love is yours alone I'll always be here holding you near
Rafe: I keep asking you these pretty straightforward questions, and yet they seem to kinda stump you.
Chad: I keep telling you I was drunk.
Rafe: Okay... so the long pauses, it's not that you're trying to cook up something. It's just trying to remember.
Rafe: Oh. So when did the blackouts start? 'Cause you say you don't remember busting your lip, yet you do remember parting ways with Serena. So shouldn't you be able to remember what happened earlier in the night?
Chad: It was hazy. We were both wasted. I remember her leaving. I think I lost my cool. I-I maybe came on too strong.
Rafe: How so?
Chad: I kissed her. And she kissed me back. Then she realized that we were both drunk, and she didn't want to do anything that she would regret.
Rafe: So then she got up and left? You remember that?
Rafe: Yeah. So how'd that make you feel? That make you angry?
Chad: No... disappointed, of course. But I saw her point. So we called it a night, and that was the last I ever saw of her. Excuse me.
Rafe: Right. So you're positive about that?
Ben: Look. I'm really sorry. I did not mean to trash Chad. And I sure as hell didn't mean to disrespect that poor woman who was murdered.
Abigail: I-I get you wanting to trash Chad. After everything he put you through, all that stuff about getting you arrested, and the fact that he and I have history? Ben, that--that's what it is... history. You and our baby, that is my future. Marrying you and raising this kid... let's focus on that, okay?
Ben: You're right.
Abigail: Can you do that for me? Can we just let all this go?
Ben: I will try. I swear I will. But, Chad, he is drawn to you like a moth to a flame, Abigail.
Ben: And if him being around you could ever put you in any type of danger, then I'm gonna have to do something about it.
Abigail: You get so carried away. Ben, there is no threat, okay? There's no danger. Let's just focus on the two of us.
Ben: No. I'm focusing on the three of us.
Abigail: Yeah, that's what I mean... three of us.
Kayla: Well, it's been a long time since I've heard one of your explanations. They were always so creative.
Steve: Can we just skip the sarcasm and talk about our son?
Steve: Okay... thanks to social media, Joe and I have been texting, emailing, and, uh, well, it was pretty mundane stuff at first. A little awkward.
Kayla: Maybe because he hasn't seen you in such a long time.
Steve: But then it starting getting more personal.
Steve: Yeah. It turns out, uh, he wasn't too keen on leaving Salem, and being dumped in that boarding school in Ohio. So I tried to sympathize with him. Tried to see things from his point of view.
Kayla: So, you...you backed him up? And you invited him to drop out of school, and fly to new York on his own--
Steve: No. I didn't do that, Kayla. I wouldn't do that to him or to you. I had no idea he was even thinking of coming to new York, he just showed up. And when I realized he had dropped out of school-- Joey: He brought me home.
Kayla: Well, your father did the right thing. I just wish that somebody could have maybe let me know what was going on.
Steve: I'm sorry, Kayla. I really thought that, uh, we'd get here before you heard from the school.
Kayla: Well, to be fair, it was close.
Steve: But the truth is, I had another reason for bringing him back. Personal one.
Kayla: And what would that be?
Steve: It's pretty simple. I'm thinking about staying in Salem...permanently.
no no, no, no
Hope: [Sighs] That was wonderful. The whole night... has been really wonderful.
Aiden: Well, you know, it doesn't have to end.
Hope: I think that it's best I sleep in my own bed tonight. I have a lot to think about.
Aiden: Right, right. Well, I want you... to take this with you.
Hope: So I can have it appraised?
Aiden: No, no, no, no. Because it doesn't do me any good if it's not on your finger. Maybe I want you to hang on to it so you'll remember what I said tonight.
Hope: I'll always remember what you said to me tonight. But okay. I'll take good care of it.
[Cell phone beeps]
Hope: I've gotta swing by the station.
Aiden: I'll walk you over.
Hope: No, no, it's fine.
Aiden: Are you sure?
Hope: Yes, totally fine.
Aiden: Okay, okay.
Hope: Thank you... for everything. And I'm sorry that I disappointed you tonight.
Aiden: No, baby, you didn't. You couldn't.
Hope: Good night.
Aiden: Okay, good night. [Laughs softly] Bye-bye.
Kayla: You're thinking about coming back to Salem? No, the--this is--this isn't your home. Not anymore.
Steve: I can't agree with you on that.
Kayla: No, you need to go back to new York. I mean, my God, it's the most exciting city in the world, and that's what you wanted. Isn't it? Excitement? A life filled with excitement and no ties.
Steve: I want my family.
Kayla: For how long this time? I mean, just because you're feeling a little nostalgic, I don't think that you should be using Joey to try to recapture the past.
Steve: "The past"? Kayla, I'm thinking about the present and I'm looking to the future. My family is right here in Salem.
Kayla: You do not get to talk to me about family. You made your decision about family in Africa, when you completely unilaterally made the decision to join the ISA. And I had no choice but to learn to live with that decision, and learn to live without you. And so did our children.
Steve: I'm not with the ISA anymore. Kayla, I... I just want to start over.
Kayla: You're just done with that? Because our son shows up at your front door? You just wanna... you just wanna waltz back into our lives?
Steve: Look, I-I-I don't expect you to--
Kayla: Don't say another word, okay? Don't say another word. Just go. Just go and I will handle this, just like I always do.
Steve: Okay. I'll go for now. This isn't over, Kayla. I'm not gonna just go away. You hear me?
Chad: I am positive that when Serena left that club, it was the last time that I saw her.
Rafe: That you remember. Yeah, okay. Well, if you happen to remember anything else, you know where to find me. Just feel free to give me a call. I'm back at work.
Stefano: Isn't that how you got into this mess in the first place?
Chad: Should have known you'd be lurking in the shadows, listening.
Stefano: [Laughs] It is my house.
Chad: Well, it's about to be all yours. But before I go, I hope you really don't think I had anything to do with that woman's death.
Stefano: Well, to, uh, paraphrase officer Hernandez, hmm, are you sure about that? appetite back.
Abigail: Oh, thanks a lot.
Abigail: I'm sorry I wasted the first one.
Abigail: Hmm. Oh, my God. I can't stop thinking about how big I'm gonna be when I walk down the aisle.
Ben: You look great. Terrific.
Abigail: Well, thank you, but I'm not talking about now, I'm thinking about at Christmas time.
Ben: Christmas time?
Abigail: Yes, yeah. I was thinking about it, and I think that Christmas is just... it's just the perfect time for a wedding.
Ben: Yeah, but, that's like four months away, Abigail.
Abigail: Well, I know, but... it's just such a magical time of year. You know, and my... my Horton family is so crazy about Christmas time. But think about it. All our friends and family will already be here, and there's mass with the Bradys, you know? And then there's the hanging of the ornaments on the Christmas tree.
Ben: Oh, yeah, I know, but... um, I just--
Abigail: Listen, Ben, four months is actually considered a pretty short engagement.
Ben: I just think it's too long to wait. Hey, I...I think we should get married in the next couple weeks.
Abigail: Ben, you're the one who said you wanted me to have this big dream wedding. Why are you rushing this all of the sudden?
Steve: Aw, look at that. Mrs. H and dr. H still at the center of it all. That's nice. It is good to be home. I know just who I need to see next.
Stefano: So... where did go after you left that young lady?
Chad: Well, point of fact, she left me, then I went for a walk to clear my head.
Stefano: And then?
Chad: I checked into the Salem inn.
Stefano: At the crack of dawn.
Chad: If you already know all this, why are you even asking me?
Stefano: Because you see, I-- I need to know where you were after you left the bar and before you checked into the inn. And that's the part that you don't remember, right?
Kayla: What's the matter? That used to be your favorite.
Joey: I changed, okay?
Kayla: Yeah, I know. You used to talk. You know, Joey, I'm not just mad at you. I'm worried. I mean, do you want to tell me why you left school, and-- you know what? You're a minor, you...you-- going off like that's dangerous.
Joey: I got there all right, didn't I?
Kayla: I wouldn't cop an attitude with me, mister. You know--
Joey: Do you see why I didn't tell you I was talking to dad? 'Cause you think everything I do is wrong.
Kayla: No, I just think that you're making some mistakes. Look, I get it, that you want to know your own dad, it's just--
Joey: Look... you don't need to explain things to me, okay? Yeah, at first I thought he did want to be my dad. But it's just like you said, he's only using me as an excuse to come back here.
Steve: Well, now, you are the best dressed cop I have ever seen.
Hope: Steve? What are you doing here?
Steve: Come on, sweet thing. Aren't you gonna give me a squeeze? Come on. Oh...okay.
Hope: Long time.
Steve: Uh, yeah.
Hope: What are you doing here?
Steve: Well, my boy, Joe... Joey, he, uh, took off from that boarding school he was at.
Hope: I had no idea.
Steve: No, Kayla didn't either. He showed up at my door in new York. I brought him back to Kayla. Can you imagine, him doing a thing like that? I mean, why can't these kids be more like we were? Reliable, obedient--
Hope: Yeah, those are definitely the words I've always used to describe you, Steve, when you were younger.
Steve: What about you, huh? Taking off on the back of Bo's bike, huh? How's he doing?
Hope: I don't know.
Hope: He went undercover for the ISA. I haven't seen him in three years.
Steve: But if--
Hope: But what? But what, Steve?
Steve: That's just not like him.
Hope: Really? Well, people change. Don't they, Steve? That's exactly what he did. He deserted me.
Joey: You heard him. He's here 'cause his family is here.
Kayla: You know, Joey, I'm not gonna trash your father. But I just--I-I think that he means what he says when he says it. I'm just not so sure that he can follow through with it.
Joey: Come on, how could you possibly not be sure?
Kayla: You know, I think that you and Stephanie--you guys know your father's M.O., And I think that he--he loves you the best he can. It's just that, sometimes...it's not as much as you want.
Steve: How long has Bo been gone? How's Ciara?
Hope: He's been gone a long time, and Ciara is doing wonderfully.
Steve: You really don't want to talk about it.
Hope: No. I don't want to talk about it. So what about you? Headed back to new York?
Steve: I'm not really sure what I'm doing yet. I, uh--I'm not with the ISA anymore.
Steve: Yeah, and I've been hanging out with Joe, trying to get to know him a little bit. [Sighs] Kayla...didn't exactly welcome me back with open arms.
Hope: Shocker. Do you think she should have?
Steve: Well, no. But it, uh, really made me realize how much work I'm gonna have to do to make things right with my family again.
Hope: Right. Well, when you're put in the position to have to make it on your own, 'cause your husband's deserted you and you're left having to raise the children on your own, you find that the happy memories are the most painful. So you don't get sentimental about the good old days, Steve.
[Cell phone chirps]
Hope: I'm working on a case. Gotta go.
Steve: Well, um, it was really good to see you--
Hope: Yeah, it was really good to see you too, Steve. We'll talk later... if you decide to stick around this time.
Chad: So I just got the third degree from Rafe. I really don't need it from you.
Stefano: You are under suspicion of murder, and your alibi is, "I don't remember."
Chad: Well, it's the truth.
Stefano: You went to clear your head and it took all night. All right? Now who would possibly believe that?
Chad: I-I don't--I don't care whether you believe me or not. Yeah, I may be a DiMera, but, unlike you, I am not a killer. And I resent the hell out of the fact that you're even implying that I am. here?
Steve: I, um... I went to see hope. She told me about Bo. And it made it painfully clear what I did to you. I'm here to say I'm sorry. And I know I should've called you about Joe. But the truth is, I wanted to come back here and see you again. I missed you. I missed you so much.
Kayla: You know, hold it right there. You can't just swoop back into my life like nothing has happened.
Steve: I know.
Kayla: You left me and your son in Africa. And I can never, never forgive you for that.
Steve: I understand.
Kayla: No, I don't think you do. I don't think that you could possibly understand what that was like. Otherwise you would know that "sorry"-- [Scoffs] "Sorry"? Just not gonna cut it. You wanna make our past your present and your future? Isn't gonna happen. Because what we shared is over. And you're just gonna have to learn to live with that.
Dr. Brady. Yeah, I'll be right there. Show yourself out.
Aiden: Look, I'm tell you, I am good for the money. I just--I need a little more time. Just another month or so. Because I'm coming into a sweet windfall, that's why. Look, it will not be long, I promise you. I'm gonna be able to pay you back...and then some.
Ben: If it seems like I'm in a rush to get married, it's because I am. 'Cause I love you. Come here. I know I need to slow down. It's just--this is gonna be your big day. So if you want a Christmas wedding, that's exactly what you're gonna get.
Hope: Rafe... you got something for me?
Rafe: Yeah, I found this over there.
Hope: Club TBD.
Rafe: It's one of their cocktail napkins.
Hope: Looks like blood.
Rafe: Yeah, but Serena was strangled.
Hope: So obviously it's not hers.
Rafe: Nope. Having CSI run a blood analysis ASAP. Thank you. So maybe our killer got sloppy.
Hope: Or we just got very lucky.
Hope: Good to have you back.
Chad: [Sighs] Why can't I remember?
