[Knock at door]
Kayla: Hi. Am I interrupting?
Abigail: No, just wrapping up some work.
Kayla: Hello, baby.
Kayla: Well, I know you got here early this morning. So did you take a break at all?
Abigail: I'm just tying up loose ends for the charity.
Kayla: That's it?
Abigail: Why do you ask?
Kayla: Well, I'm just, you know, wondering if maybe, you know, immersing yourself in all this work is just a good excuse for getting away from your mom and JJ and... eve.
Zoe: It's cute.
Chad: Eh. Letters are a little uneven.
Zoe: What? It's perfect.
Zoe: Is that Arianna, as in will and Sonny's daughter?
Chad: Yeah, they're having a little birthday party here tomorrow.
Zoe: Well, I'm impressed.
Zoe: Oh, just that a high-powered executive like yourself still finds time for the small things... you know, the things that count.
Chad: So has, um... has will turned in his article on Clyde Weston yet?
Zoe: He promised it to me tomorrow. So I'm totally free all night.
Victor: I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to say good-bye to Melanie.
Daniel: Oh, it's okay. Her departure was pretty, uh-- pretty sudden.
Victor: But you're gonna miss her.
Daniel: Well, I already do. Yeah.
Victor: Well, as does your mother. That's why I thought it was time to reveal my plan to... well, at least take the edge off the collective blues. Dinner, my house tonight? Nothing formal or anything. It's a--Maggie promised Xander that he'd--
Daniel: Okay, Victor, you can stop talking right now. And count me out.
Nicole: What are you doing?
Xander: I need to know something. So your turning me down... again... is it really because of Victor? Or is this all about Daniel? Because if it's him, then... you and I are going to have a very serious problem.
Nicole: Daniel is not an appropriate topic of conversation for us, Xander.
Xander: I don't agree.
Nicole: Fine. Then turn around and go, because we're done here.
Eric: What is this?
Serena: Where... Eric, how di-- I-I don't--I don't understand.
Eric: Answer the question, Serena.
Abigail: You're right, aunt Kayla. I have been upset about a lot of things... especially what my mom did to get JJ and Paige back together after what happened with eve. I mean, encouraging JJ to lie to Paige? That just doesn't seem like my mom at all... or at least my idea of her.
Kayla: Whatever your mom did, she did for JJ. She would do the same for you. You know that.
Abigail: Yeah. I do, I do. And... you know, it took me a while to realize how judgmental I was being... me of all people. But I think I'm learning that no matter how good your intentions are... you're going to make mistakes. It's inevitable, right? Whether it's work or family or falling in love with the wrong person.
Daniel: I'd be willing to bet Brady isn't in the mood for a cheer-up dinner either.
Victor: And that's why you don't want to come? This can't be about Brady.
Daniel: [Sighs] Uh, no, it isn't.
Victor: Well, is it me? Did I do something to upset you?
Daniel: No, Victor. I would eat with you and mom anytime.
Victor: Except tonight?
Daniel: Dinner is for Xander.
Daniel: Isn't that what you said?
Daniel: Yeah, forget it.
Victor: You have a problem with Xander?
Nicole: Xander... what the hell?
Xander: You're not done with Daniel at all, are you?
Serena: Yeah... I'm sorry if I seem rattled. I just... [Sighs] Well, I didn't expect to leave and then come back and find that you had gone through my things.
Eric: I didn't go through your things. Xander sent this by messenger. I signed for it.
Serena: So the messenger-- he, um--he just handed you that picture. It wasn't in an envelope?
Eric: [Chuckles] How is that relevant?
Serena: I'm just wondering. I assume that my name was on it, yet you decided to open it.
Eric: Yes, your name was on it, and I signed for it. But I accidently spilled my coffee on it, and I didn't want the contents to be ruined.
Serena: How considerate.
Eric: I never imagined I'd find this inside.
Serena: Well, I didn't imagine that you would open something that was intended for me.
Eric: Okay, wait, why are you putting me on the defensive? This is you and Xander in bed. Explain... now.
Chad: Well, um, I should get back to work.
Zoe: Uh, Chad, wait. Um... I've been wanting to check out some theater in Chicago. I was thinking about getting some tickets tonight. Would you be interested?
Chad: Uh... you know what? I'm just--I'm tied up right now.
Zoe: Ah... it's too bad. Maybe next time.
Chad: Um, will you let me know as soon as will turns in his article?
Zoe: Yeah, definitely.
Zoe: I'll see you soon.
Kate: Oh, hi, Zoe.
Zoe: Kate. Good to see you.
Zoe: Take care, Chad.
Chad: Yeah, see you.
Kate: Well, I bet she's not used to that... being blown off.
Chad: Well, I have no idea what you mean, Kate.
Kate: Oh, come on. I saw the expression on your face when you were talking to her. You wouldn't give the poor woman the time of day.
Chad: Mm. I was being polite.
Kate: Did she ask you out?
Chad: You just can't help yourself, can you?
Kate: Oh, come on. Of course she did. It's obvious that she's interested in you.
Kate: What surprises me, though, is that she didn't pique your interest. She's so beautiful. She's smart. She's charming.
Chad: She works for me.
Kate: Oh, never stopped a DiMera before.
Kate: [Chuckles] So one can only deduce that you told Zoe to take a hike because you can't stop thinking about someone else?
Chad: [Chuckles] Mm.
Kayla: Well, it's not exactly a rare occurrence-- falling for the wrong person. In fact, I don't think I hardly know anyone that it hasn't happened to at some point in their life.
Abigail: Yeah, I guess it is pretty common.
Kayla: But I do know, from my own experience and from observing other people, that what may seem like a mistake initially ends up being completely the opposite. And a guy who seems like he's wrong for a million reasons-- somehow or other, it all adds up that he's right. [Scoffs]
Abigail: I know my dad and Steve--they weren't the men that my mom's parents or your parents would've wanted you to fall in love with.
Kayla: No, they were not.
Abigail: Okay, but didn't that bother you? I mean, didn't that make you doubt your love, knowing that your family disapproved?
Kayla: Well, I mean, I wished that it was otherwise, but it didn't make me love Steve less. I knew that he was the one for me and that he was someone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I guess I didn't really care what other people thought.
Abigail: God, I wish I could be more like you-- just not caring what people think.
Kayla: But, I mean, your mom approves of Ben, right?
Abigail: Yeah, yeah, she does.
Kayla: Okay, then why all the concern?
Abigail: Just... sometimes I have my own doubts, uh... you know, more about myself than about Ben.
Victor: I don't understand. How can you have a problem with Xander?
Daniel: How will do you know him, Victor?
Victor: Uh, not too well. Haven't seen him in years until recently. But he's family.
Daniel: Mm-hmm. And you helped him turn his life around.
Victor: Yeah, you might say that, but that was years ago. What are you getting at?
Daniel: It's just that Xander changed pretty dramatically since Brady and I hung out with him on that Greek island. He was a seriously messed-up kid. And now he's an upstanding citizen, a successful entrepreneur. He ran a charity for a while. That's quite a story, Victor.
Victor: Your point?
Daniel: My point is... I'm not buying it.
Nicole: Let me get this straight. You come to my office, where I work, and you plant a big old kiss on me where anyone can see. And the reason you think I'm upset is Daniel?
Xander: There's nobody here. You didn't seem to mind my attention back at the hotel room.
Nicole: Okay, again, to be clear, your argument is you feel entitled, and I'm supposed to be a good sport? Xander, what part of my personality or body language says that I enjoy being pushed around?
Xander: You're right. I'm so sorry I was being rude. And, of course, you're totally right about this dinner. I mean, I was... crazy for even bringing it up. My uncle's head would have exploded if I had shown up with you, and if Daniel's there with his kid, I mean, well... I don't like scenes.
Nicole: Parker's in town?
Xander: Yes, he is. I can't imagine Brady would be too happy about you being there either. But you're right. The whole thing has fiasco written all over it.
Nicole: My point exactly. I don't know what was so hard to understand.
Xander: If we're going to be realistic... my family does get in the way... a lot.
Nicole: Are you saying we should end this?
Xander: No. I didn't say that.
Serena: [Sighs] It's nothing, Eric... absolutely nothing.
Eric: You were in bed... in bed. You're saying it means nothing, Serena?
Serena: It means nothing now. I mean, that was so many years ag-- I can't even--years, Eric.
Eric: You had an affair.
Serena: Please, I would not exactly call it that. It was while-- wait. You think... Eric, this was after you left to go to the states to become a priest. I never cheated on you. You need to get that out of your head.
Eric: That's not it.
Serena: Then what?
Eric: It's because you were involved with Xander and you never said a word, not even a single word... not back then, not later, not ever. Why, Serena? Why would you keep this from me?
Kayla: I don't understand, Abigail. Why would you have doubts about yourself?
Abigail: I just wonder if I'm capable of that kind of loyalty it takes to stay with someone and make it last.
Kayla: Why wouldn't you be?
Abigail: I don't know. Something in my nature, I guess. I mean, it's like what I said about mom before, that she wasn't acting like herself. I mean, it's the same with me sometimes.
Kayla: You don't feel like yourself?
Abigail: Right. Like, I think, "who is this person? This can't be me. I'm--I'm better than this. I'm stronger than this." But it's like something just... I don't know. It's like something just takes over, and I just-- I-I lose control. I-I... I don't know what it is. I don't know.
Kayla: Sweetie, sweetie...
Abigail: Thank you, I'm sorry, Kayla. I don't mean to just be laying this all on you.
Kayla: Are you kidding me? I love that you can feel like you can talk to me.
Kayla: You are young and beautiful and strong... and smart. And I think that you put too much pressure on yourself. So why don't you do this? Why don't you just try to enjoy what's going on right now, today? And Ben makes you happy, and that's all that matters, right?
Abigail: Yeah, right.
Kayla: Look, I know that he wasn't truthful with you in the beginning about his past. And I know that there are a lot of people who have questions about his father. But, you know, as far as I can see, he is a great guy... who is crazy about you. So maybe you just need to be grateful and thankful for what you have right now. And let your heart tell you what's right. Okay? Baby, I got to run.
Abigail: Thank you. And I love you so much.
Kayla: Oh, forget it. I love you. You are a doll, baby. All right, we'll talk later.
Kayla: All right?
[Knock at door]
Abigail: Oh, hey.
I'm here for a delivery pickup?
Abigail: Yes. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
Um, that one too?
Abigail: Um, no. Uh, I am gonna deliver this one myself. I have a, um--a message to give to the recipient. Oh, but you can take these.
All right, we'll get these right out.
Chad: I'm not sure how many times you need to be told this, Kate, but my personal life is none of your concern.
Kate: Of course it is.
Kate: I still like you, Chad, despite everything that's happened. I just want what's best for you, professionally and personally. Nice touch, by the way.
Chad: Yeah, thanks. Sonny's my partner. Will's my friend. Figured I'd help out a little bit.
Kate: Mm. Did you help out with the invitation list as well? I imagine Abigail is coming. I mean, she is the godmother after all.
Kate: I mean, if that makes a difference to you.
Chad: A difference?
Kate: Well, there must be a million reasons why the two of you should keep your distance from each other, maybe even more than that.
[Both laugh sarcastically]
Kate: But, of course, you don't need me to remind you of that.
Kate: Do you?
Victor: That's a pretty harsh assessment, isn't it, Daniel?
Daniel: It's a harsh assessment to think Xander's still a thug? Hey, look, Victor, I'm sorry. He's your nephew. I understand that. But I talked to somebody who knew him well when he was in Africa.
Victor: Eric? Come on, Daniel. You know he's gonna be biased.
Daniel: No, not Eric. Someone else--a woman. She said she knew him very well and had a very interesting perspective on him.
Victor: Well, that's not like you, Daniel. Take someone else's opinion as gospel?
Daniel: No, no. This isn't just about someone else's opinion, Victor. It's also what I've seen Xander do with Nicole.
Xander: As long as things stay private... we should be fine. And I won't be pushy anymore... unless you want me to be.
Nicole: As long as we understand each other.
Xander: I think we do... perfectly. And I have to get going. Dinner at my uncle's.
Xander: Oh, by the way, how was your chat with Serena?
Serena: I wasn't... I never thought--
Eric: You never thought to tell me about Xander? Not even after he came to Salem? Seriously, Serena, come on. Don't you think I should know about that?
Serena: Honestly, no. [Sighs] Eric, please don't be mad.
Eric: I'm not. I'm not. I'm just confused. I mean, you've been up front with me about your old boyfriends... from the very beginning. But you leave this one out. Ever since he came to town, don't you think I should know something about that?
Serena: Okay, fine. You want to know the real reason...
Eric: Yes, I do.
Serena: That I never said anything? Because it was awful. It was a huge mistake on my part. I started seeing him, and--and I found out that he wasn't good. He wasn't a good person. And, uh... [Sighs] I told you that I didn't like him. And I was ashamed. I was ashamed that I could ever be with a person like Xander, even though it was a meaningless fling. It made me feel dirty. And I didn't--I didn't want you to think less of me. And I didn't want to be reminded of my mistake. Is that really such a crime? What?
Eric: It still doesn't make sense to me. Why? I mean, why would he send this to you now?
Abigail: I just saw Harold on his way out. He said I might find you out here.
Chad: Yeah, I gave Harold and the rest of the staff the night off. It gets suffocating to be waited on 24-7.
Abigail: Uh, I'm--I'm here about the--the charity. I have a memo for you to look over. Um... it's a request to the board for enhancement funds from the contingency account.
Chad: You felt compelled to hand-deliver it to me?
Abigail: Uh, yes. I ran the numbers. I figured out the need. So I thought if you had any questions about it--
Chad: I don't have any questions. The money's yours. I'll square it with the board. Anything else?
Abigail: Well, I-I mean, don't you need to hear--
Chad: No, I don't need to hear anything. You want the money, you'll get it, end of story.
Victor: We've been through this already, Daniel. Yes, Xander was interested in Nicole, but when he found out you were together, he backed off completely. You're the one that told me that.
Daniel: Right, right. He said he made a big mistake, and he felt awful. Except... he didn't mean one word of it.
Victor: Oh, and whatever you do, stay the hell away from Nicole walker. She's nothing but trouble.
Daniel: Hey, look, I'm not giving Nicole a free pass, but Xander has been lying to my face about this from the get-go. Now, if he wants her, he needs to be man enough to tell me so. But he keeps telling me he likes me and he respects me. It's just an act, Victor. And I have had it with him.
Victor: Well, I'm sorry to hear about all this. I won't put you in an awkward position again... meaning with Xander. Take care, Daniel.
Xander: Probably not too high on Serena's friendly good-byes list, huh?
Nicole: Did Serena tell you she came by?
Xander: How else would I know?
Nicole: [Chuckles awkwardly] Yeah, well, I'm sure Serena's had warmer encounters, but she seemed happy to, you know, get out of here. I guess Salem won't be the same without her, will it?
[Cell phone ringing]
Xander: And I do have to get going.
Nicole: Yeah, I have to get back to work too...
Serena: I'm as thrown about this as you are. Look, Xander knows exactly how I feel about him. And he's made it clear that he feels the same way about me. I mean, I don't know. Maybe--maybe he's jealous of you. Or--or he's--he's trying to, uh, start something with us, you know, get us fighting. I told you, he is not a good person. In fact, I hate him, and I am just counting the hours until he leaves again and there's an ocean between us. Okay? Okay? Please, can we just-- can we get past this? There are so many positive things that we can--we can focus on. Can't we just--can't we just let this go?
Eric: No, Serena... because you're lying to me.
I don't want to live with
Kayla: Your oncologist was called away, but he wanted me to give you this. All good news, I'm happy to report. You are still cancer-free.
Kate: [Exhales deeply] That is great news. Thank you so much.
Kayla: Mm-hmm. Uh, I hear you're at, um, mad world again?
Kate: Yes, I am. As a matter of fact, I am due back there right now, so...
Kayla: I also heard that, uh, Lucas isn't working there anymore. Did you fire your own son?
Kate: No. Victor did that.
Kayla: Why would he do that?
Kate: You know, Kayla, that's just a question that you're going to have to ask Victor.
Kayla: Well, I could, but you're standing right here, so I'm asking you.
Kate: All right, then. Victor fired him because Lucas is sleeping with Adrienne.
Abigail: Well, I guess I will just leave this in the study, then, for you to read, if you decide to. Chad, what's wrong with you? What--what's going on?
Chad: [Scoffs] What could be wrong? Look at my life. Look at where I live. Look at the perks. I am drinking a 36-year-old single-malt scotch in a cut-crystal glass in the middle of the afternoon that servants fought over who would fetch it for me. And don't even get me started on the cars, because I don't even know how many. A jet-- I can snap my fingers, Abigail, and go anywhere in the world that I want. And I can be given anything that I want. So you tell me-- what more could a guy want out of life?
Parker: Daddy, will you play with me?
Daniel: Ooh, that sounds like fun, buddy, but can you just give me, like, two minutes, Parker?
Daniel: [Sighs] No, she'll just cat-and-mouse me or put me off... unless she can't. All right, Parker, just give me a few minutes, buddy, and I will be right with you. Yeah.
Daniel: Oh, this could work. This could work.
Xander: Uncle Vic, hi. Henderson let me in. I came as soon as I got your text.
Victor: What do you want, a medal?
Xander: Is this about the dinner tonight?
Victor: Dinner's off. It's canceled.
Xander: Okay, another time.
Victor: How about never? How's that work for you?
Xander: Uncle Victor, what's wrong?
Victor: A lot. Nephew, I am very, very disappointed in you.
Serena: Lying? Eric, no.
Eric: Then tell me how this makes any sense. You say you hated Xander after Africa.
Serena: While I was still in Africa. And I told you that it was a huge mistake, which I figured out very, very quickly. But it was still too late.
Eric: That's the whole story?
Serena: Yes! Yes. Xander means nothing to me. In fact, I hope I never see him again.
Eric: Then why would you consider working with him on an article when he came to Salem? Doesn't that put the guy that you can't stand in your orbit?
Serena: Look, I was never crazy about working for him. You know that.
Eric: But you considered it. That's what you said, and after today's conversation, this just does not add up.
Serena: All right, well, I can--I can see how that looks like a contradiction. The only reason I was considering working for Xander was because I was going to stay in Salem to be with you.
Eric: Wait a minute. You would work with somebody that you slept with that you can't stand, that you hate... just for me?
Serena: Everything I do is for you, Eric... everything. I mean, that is the truth... absolute rock-bottom truth. Eric...
Eric: I'm not buying it.
Serena: All right, what is that you're not--
Eric: I'm not buying any of it!
Make fit happen!
Kayla: Wow. Adrienne and Lucas--I... I'm speechless.
Kate: Yep. Well, I guess you're probably the last one to know, because discretion wasn't exactly their long suit. Of all the women in Salem that Lucas could pick to sleep with, he picks Adrienne? Even you would have been a better choice.
Kayla: I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.
Kate: What? I meant that as a compliment.
Kayla: You know, oddly, I believe you. What I don't get is why Adrienne would cheat on Justin. That's...
Kate: Well, it's cause and effect. Justin was sleeping with someone, too, other than Adrienne. Right. Anyway, thanks for the results.
Kayla: Sure. Oh, man.
Abigail: You're obviously upset. What happened with your sister-- you're--you're still grieving, I'm sure. Chad, maybe being alone in this big house is a bad idea.
Chad: I don't have to be alone. Zoe's made it perfectly clear that she's available tonight.
Abigail: [Chuckles] Like I said, this is the memo, and I will leave it for you in the study.
Chad: Why don't you stay... get what you really came for?
Abigail: I came for the money.
Chad: Abigail... why are you here?
Abigail: I don't know what you mean.
Chad: Yes, you do. I'm talking about us. I'm talking about what's gonna happen.
Chad: You know why you're here. We both know.
[Mouse pad clicks]
Nicole: [Sighs] I went through these links 100 times. Well... the back door to the dark web worked when I was probing Dr. Chyka's profiles. I mean, maybe it'll give me something on Xander, something that I haven't already found. There has to be. There has to be. I mean, no one can completely hide their past.
Victor: You remember a phone conversation that we had recently... which I gave you some simple, easy-to-follow instructions?
Xander: Uncle, I, uh--
Victor: It seems, Xander, that you've decided to go off on your own and ignore what I told you. Remember that?
Xander: I honestly have no idea what this is about.
Victor: It's about Nicole walker, you idiot. Could I not have been clearer?
Xander: Uncle, I...
Victor: "Stay away from her." Is that ambiguous? Does it require illustrations, flash cards maybe? I told you she was trouble. I said she's nothing but trouble. Can those orders be perceived in some different way?
Xander: Uncle, I think maybe you have a false impression of me. I take your orders very seriously.
Victor: Except in this case.
Xander: Yes, but if you'd allow me to explain--
Victor: Oh, shut up. You can lie to anyone else. I don't give a damn. But you will not lie to me!
Daniel: And "enter." Oh, that should do it. Whoa, Parker, Parker! Hey, whoa, whoa. Oh, my goodness. Let me see this thing. Whoa, looks like the trunk broke. Let me see that thing.
Parker: I didn't break it.
Daniel: Oh, right, it just sort of happened, huh? I can fix it... I think.
Serena: Please try and understand, Eric.
Eric: S-Serena, I've known you for a very long time. Since the day we met... and argued in Africa, I know that you would not take any assignment that you didn't believe in.
Eric: There's something you're not saying. There's something that you don't want to say. And now we're supposed to go away somewhere together? How are we supposed to do that, Serena? How?
Victor: You upset Daniel. And you upset me. You knew what I expected of you, and you chose to defy me. Well, here's the thing-- I made you, Alexandros. And I can break you. I can do it right now.
Nicole: "Alexandros Kiriakis, aka Xander cook." Hmm. Why are both names mentioned? Oh, my god. He served time... for murder.
Parker: Fix it. Fix it.
Daniel: All right, I'm working on it. Hold on here. Hold on. We'll get it fixed. Not a problem. Except I have to--
Daniel: Whoa, what in the world is that?
Serena: Eric, please listen to me.
Eric: You listen to me. You say you love me.
Serena: I do.
Eric: Then you tell me what's going on... or we're not going anywhere together.
Abigail: I don't know what you're talking about.
Chad: I'm talking about the fact that it is gonna happen.
Chad: Yes. Yes. That is why you are here.
Chad: You want to know the crazy thing? Is we want each other even more than we did before. All of the mistakes that we have made and everything that we have done to hurt each other, it has only made us want each other even more. When I look into your eyes, I see something that no one else sees or understands. And that is exactly why it is going to be even better when it does happen.
Abigail: No, no, no.
Chad: Yes, yes. Yes. You know it's true.
