Ring, damn it. I said, "ring"!

[Cell phone ringing] - Oh.

[Exhales deeply]

Hello? I hope this isn't a bad time, I was just, uh, thinking about you. Now, that's what I call a coincidence.

[Laughing] Are Chase and Aiden meeting us here? They are. They are, honey. We had a lot of fun at the lake with them today, didn't we? I still have sand in my shoes. You know what? I think I do too. Oh, my goodness. Okay, I better call Grandpa and Grandma, let them know we're running a little late today.

[Cell phone ringing]

Oh, sorry, honey. I got to take this. Hello? In poplar bluff. Great. I was hoping the police chief would come through for us about good old Clyde. Tell him I'll call him back ASAP. Thanks.

Daniel: Hey, welcome home. Hey. I saw you crossing in the lobby and... how's your-- how's your mom? Oh, uh, she's fine. You know, it wasn't really a major procedure. I just wanted to be there for her, and I was glad I went. Good. That's good. I'm glad that you stopped by. Uh, do you have a minute? Yeah, I do, but the last time we talked-- I know. Right.

All right.

Please sit down. I was just wondering if I could sort through some things with you and maybe you could help me figure out what I should do. What's, uh-- what's going on? I am worried that Eve Larson is about to go off the rails. Fine. We've had sex, okay? Happy now? Look, I'm sorry. Please don't worry about me. I'm on birth control-- okay, you know what? I've heard enough. Enough, okay?

[Keys jingling]

Come on, Mom. Grandpa and Grandma are waiting for us. Dad, can we have sundaes?

Uh, we'll have to wait and see, buddy. Come on, let's go. You first. What were you thinking about me?

[Chuckles] I was thinking I-- I'm in a real bind. How's that? Well, I'd really like to see you Nicole... but if I do, then that'll hurt Daniel. Yes. I guess so. Unless, of course, we meet privately. That way, no one gets the wrong idea. Daniel doesn't know, so he doesn't get hurt. By privately you mean... I'm at the Salem inn, room 1224. If there was a way that you could get here discreetly, would that work for you? Oh.

[Laughing] JJ. I need something. What? Somebody's happy. What's the letter? Let me guess, you made the dean's list again? Actually, it's from Stanford. They want to know my status for next fall. They're holding a spot for me. Look, I know, okay? I always thought staying here and going to Salem U would be, like, temporary but now... what? I don't want to leave you. California is a long way off, but you know what? Maybe you're not the only one who got lucky today. What? Oh, my God! It's so great. Oh. I-I'm certainly not a psychiatrist, and I know this is gonna sound so out there. Okay. Just--just say it. All right, you know the coat that you let JJ borrow-- the one that he wore the first night that he and Eve were together? Yeah, yeah, I donated it to the charity drive. Yeah, well, she saw it, and she took the coat. - I'm sorry? - Yeah, she kept it. She took it home with her. And I wanted to talk to her to find out what was going on, because why would she do something like that? I have no idea. Well, I do have an idea. I think Eve has some very strong, very unhealthy feelings for my son.

[Grunts angrily]

[Knock at door]

[Grunts] Hey.

[Chuckles] You're early. You said it was time to double down on getting rid of JJ, I figured the sooner, the better. Okay. Let me ask you a question, Cole. Do you like my daughter? Mrs. Larson, she's the best. Deveraux is not even fit to be in the same room with her. Okay, that is an excellent answer. Please sit down. So... our problem is to eradicate JJ, okay? That's get rid of him. You got it?

Okay. Well, I want the solution to our problem to be permanent this time. And I know that it's out there. We just have to find it. The key, Cole, is... we're just gonna have to be open to anything.

You kids go in. We'll be in in a sec, okay? - Aiden, look. - What? That call I got about poplar bluff... - it was none of my business. - No, it wasn't. But I just want to make sure that you understand. It wasn't in any way connected to anything that you said to me about Clyde Weston. - I just want you to know-- - okay. Hey, I'm serious, okay? Your business is your business. My business is my mine, okay? Besides, we are having so much fun. Why do you want to ruin it talking about work?

So you had fun today?

I had so much fun today. How much fun did you have? I'm gonna show you how much fun.

[Door closes]

Ciara: See, told you, Grandma Julie. Uh... so... we meet in your hotel room? To talk. I hope I didn't give the wrong impression. No. No, of course, you're a gentleman. Just give me a few minutes? I'll be here. Okay, Xander, whatever you're up with Serena, your place is where I start digging.

Daniel: That's pretty disturbing. So what-- all right, what exactly happened? I talked to Eve. I confronted her, and, of course, she denied it. But when I asked her about her feelings for JJ, she lost it. She went completely ballistic, Daniel. Not a good sign. Right, so that makes me worry. It makes me worry how-- how stable she really is. And, you know, when she was really young, she was put into some rough situations with men. Yeah, my mom filled me in on her issues. Right. So what if her past is what's driving her to do this-- I mean, this sickness, you know? I don't know. Possibly, but-- and what if there's nothing we can do? - What if this gets worse? - And it could. But there is a solution. If you, JJ, and Eve sit down with Paige... and tell her the truth. Gosh, this is so great. Oh, this is just plain awesome. I know. I know. I mean, okay, I didn't get into Stanford, but... San Jose state is kind of cool, right? Of course, and it's only, like, 30 minutes from Stanford. Well, what do you think I applied? Paige, we're gonna be together in California-- going to the beach in the morning and skiing in the afternoon. Yes, and maybe a little bit of studying in between. Oh, yeah, yeah, that stuff.

[Chuckles] Oh, JJ, I don't think I've ever been this happy. No, me neither. And, Paige... what? Let's not wait. - What do you mean? - Till the end of summer. Why don't we go as soon as possible? - To California? - Yeah. Where else? I mean, we can leave, like, next week. - Next week? - Okay. Okay. That might be a little too rushed, but how about, like, a week after next, two weeks from today? That's still kind of rushed. Oh, not really. I mean, what do we have to do? We could pack light. It's not like we need warm clothes out there, right? True. Just shorts and sunblock. Hmm, maybe a couple of bathing suits and cool sunglasses.

[Giggles] And all we have to do is look at rentals online. We can easily find a place before we even get there. Yeah, right. What? Well, I love the idea of us moving in together. It's just, leaving everything behind so suddenly... yeah, but it's not really sudden because we're gonna be going to California anyway when the semester starts. So why not get settled in sooner? Just think about how great it will be to be on our own, just the two of us, with no interference from anyone or anything. Then we can focus on each other... just us, for the first time. Will you at least think about it?

Yes! Great! And maybe you can, like, let me know by tonight? Tonight? Can I have a couple of days? Yes, yeah, of course, I just, I didn't mean to pressure you. Oh. I love you so much. Wow. It's-- us. We're gonna be together, Paige. All the time. All right. Cole, let's review where we are, okay? What we need and what we really, really, really want. Deveraux out of the picture. And nothing that we do-- neither one of us can be linked to anything that happens, all right? Not now, not ever. Right. Okay. Well, do you have any thoughts? Anything in JJ's past come to mind? Anything that you might consider maybe one of JJ's weaknesses? Sounds like you want me to plant drugs on him.

you never heard that?

[Hope laughs]

Oh, yay.

There she is.

Hope: Oh, my gosh, I have missed you. I missed you so much. I love you. It's so good to see you.

Aiden, good to see you.

Good to see you, Doug. I loved hearing you sing to Chase.

I love that song.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, you know, it's a good old song from when I was his age. And strangely, I don't think it went over too well. Oh, little princess. Oh, you are just turning into such a beautiful young lady. Wow. I know. Everybody says so. Well, I can't decide which of the two of you has grown taller since I saw you last. Chase, Ciara, Chase, Ciara, it's obviously Chase. Yeah, well, yeah, from what I hear, you have a quite the voice, Doug. Well, on our last cruise, the cruise director had him come up and sing with the big band. Oh, gasp, I wonder how they knew that Daddy could sing, Julie? Well, someone, I say someone...

Must've put in a word. Such a beautiful cruise, like old times.

The best of old times.

Yep, yep. Yeah, I hear you're really into cruises.

Yes, we are. We love them. We love them. It's so serene, sailing on the ocean. And don't forget the excitement of seeing all those wonderful exotic places. But the best thing is just being together, the two of us in our little cabin, no telephones, no emails, no distractions, just the two of us together. Right, sweetheart? Yep. Why did I know you were gonna say that? Okay. I know you don't want to hear it. I get that, but it is the best choice you have. No, it's too late for that. We can't tell Paige the truth, because it will destroy her. - You don't know that. - Yes. She's 18 years old. And when you are 18, a betrayal like that is absolute. I mean, the boy that you love cheats on you with your own mother? All right, all right. And we can't talk JJ into breaking up with her again to protect her from the truth, because he tried that. And Paige is smart, and she's twice as determined, so she will do whatever it takes to find out the truth. - Exactly. - So, really... there is no point to this conversation because there doesn't even seem to be a solution to it. Jenn? Do you trust me? Yes, of course. Then hear me out. I can't guarantee it'll work, but... I think I have an idea. Do you see any other towns that we can check out? JJ, you said you were gonna give me a couple of days, remember, to decide if I can do this as soon as you want us to? I mean, what's the point of finding a place to live when we don't even know when we'll be moving? That's true, but I trust that you'll make the right decision. The one you want me to make, you mean. The one that's best for both of us, Paige. Hey, look at me. Getting out Salem is what we both need-- a new start as soon as possible away from everyone, I mean, I know that you love her, but you also know that the best thing for us and for our future together is to put some distance between us and your mom. You said this, not me. It's cool. I never heard you say a word. You got total deniability. I know how stuff like this works.

[Chuckles] Right. Now, if we go down this road, if it's even feasible, we have to make sure that our hands are absolutely spotless, okay?

Ms. Larson?

Mm-hmm. Doing a number on JJ like this, it's no biggie. Trust me, I got it. We have to make sure that we don't, you know-- aren't seen together. So, from this point on, we're gonna use phones to communicate, and I'm gonna pick up a couple of those disposable phones so they can't be traced back to us. Got it? Um... I think you may be overthinking this a little. Cole, there is no such thing as overthinking anything when it comes to being careful, all right? So the time, the place, all of it will be decided later. Got it? Whatever. Okay. Get you out of here. Just a minute. All right, it's clear. Go. Go, go, go. Just make sure that you're not seen. Go.

[Sighing] Oh, my God. How dumb do you think I am, lady? I can do this in my sleep. Yo, dog. Meet me in the park. You know what I want. I'm in a rush. Piece of cake. Listen, I'm really glad you called. I wasn't sure you would after our talk the other day, so... Nicole, I've got to say something. Just to be clear-- this whole you-and-me thing, it's tricky. We'll survive. But I need to know where you stand. So be honest, okay? If what's going on between us is, uh, temporary, if you feel you have a real future with Daniel, then, please, just know that I'm here to help in any way I can.

Hey, let me tell you. If it weren't for these two right here, hope and I probably never would've met. And I'm the first to admit that it-- we weren't exactly a match made in heaven. I was a little too feisty for him, I think.

Aiden: Well, a little feisty, maybe, maybe so. But because of our kids... I don't know. Something magical happened. So here is to Ciara... Chase, and a little bit of magic.

Oh, yeah.

All right.

Doug: I'd go for that.

I know. They're always doing that. Oh, it's terrible, isn't it? Listen, would everybody like seconds at this table? - Yes. - How about you, darling? - No, I'm good. Thanks. - Okay. - Everybody get seconds... - okay. Except Doug. Darling, help me, uh, make the order. Okay? Okay.

[Giggles] He's so funny. - I've got to say this. - What? You and Aiden-- it's so Namaste... so relaxed, so natural. Yeah, it is, mostly. "Mostly"? What do you mean "mostly"? No, it's just the differences in our jobs. I mean, he's on one side. I'm on the other side. Aiden got pretty wound up about a case we're both working on.

[Gasps] You want to arrest somebody, and he wants to defend them?

[Chuckles] More or less, yes. Oh. Well, darling, just remember, when things do get a little bit out of balance, what you have to do is search...

[Inhales deeply] For your inner harmony. My Zen master taught me that. I'll see what I can do.

[Laughs] But, mostly, it is pretty wonderful. Look how happy Ciara is. I'm looking at how happy hope is. - I love you. - I love you.

[Both chuckle] Yeah, we really can't avoid thinking about my mom, can we? Even talking about leaving, she's part of it. And I know that things only got worse between her and us when she found out that we'd... been together. But it's probably like that for all mothers, though, you know-- the day they found out their little girl is all grown up. Yeah. Yeah, that's probably it. And I think maybe it's harder for her, too, because she doesn't have anyone in her life right now. I mean, except for that stupid loser she hooked up with a while ago. - Yeah. - Okay. You know what? Let's just stop talking about her. We're having too much fun. Yeah, that's a good idea. Hey. You guys are smiling way too much to be worried about finals? - Um... - what's up? JJ got into san Jose state. Yeah? You're leaving good old Salem u? Yeah, we're moving to California. Paige will be at Stanford. I'll be at san Jose. California, cool. You know what? Um, hang on a sec. I got to go talk to rob about our lab report. Okay. No risk-- that's the key. Just got to get JJ away from Paige, and none of it can be linked back to me.

[Cell phone ringing]

[Clears throat] That's weird. That was sent a long time ago. Why am I getting it-- "just landing. Meet me at the hospital--urgent"?

[Sighs] What the hell? "Landing? Hospital? "Where were you? Are you okay?"

[Sighs] Oh, Theresa! Really? Mm!

[Sighs] Okay. The thing is, Eve knows that I know what went on with JJ, but she's not at all sure what I'm gonna do about it. You didn't make her any promises? Hell, no. She just hopes that I won't say anything. So, if I went to her... and told her to get help, get into therapy...

Yeah. Daniel, I begged her to do that. She's not-- well, and since it was your idea, she just threw it up in your face. So, if I give her the ultimatum--to get help... or I go public. You think? Ah, it could work. It's a long shot. But what other alternative do you have? Oh, my goodness. No, you're right. You're right. Right? Oh, I knew coming to you would be the right thing to do.

Thank you. Let's just not celebrate till we--yeah--know what happens. Yeah. And, really, win or lose, you gave me something to hang on to, so... all right, well, since you walked in that door, we've been talking about me and my family. So I want to know about you. How are things going with you and Nicole? Nicole and I? Uh... in flux. - Is that a good thing? - Maybe. Maybe. You know, we just-- we go--we go back and forth, and I think I'm finally coming to an understanding about how she-- how she really feels about me. Yeah.

[Chuckles] You're awfully protective of Daniel, and I'm just kind of surprised. You two don't know each other that well, do you? Nicole, everything I've been able to achieve in my life I owe it to the Kiriakis family. Look, I got off to a very, very bad start when I was young. My uncle Victor literally saved my life. Maybe this is a good time to clue you in on my relationship with good old uncle vic.

[Chuckles] A long time ago... for a couple of heartbeats, we were married.

[Chuckles] - Wait. What? - Yeah. God's honest. But to be clear, he hates my guts. And maybe that matters, maybe not. I-- look, I-I was--I was just throwing that out there because, you know, keeping our friendship between us, it-- it's even more important. Everything will stay strictly private. So, I guess if that's an issue, I'll leave now.

Wait, what? Oh, my God, I wish I got to see you guys more. I miss you so much. All right, I'll see you in between cruises. Oh, sooner than that. - You promise? - I promise you. Yes. Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. On us, let us. And don't try any of your lawyerly arguments against me, because you will lose. Oh. But, Doug, I never lose.

[Laughs] Aiden... I am thrilled to see hope so happy. - Thrilled. - Thank you. - And if it ever gets tense... - yeah. Sing her a song. It's always worked for me. Okay, well, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you. Thanks again. Okay. Well, bye, Julie. - Bye. - Good to see you. And see you soon, I hope. - Don't forget to call. - Nope. - I love you. - I will call. - I swear. - More than you did last time. Make sure you come back. I'll make sure. I'll make sure. - Bye. - You say bye to grandpa. Okay. Oh.

Both: Mmm. What was that for? Oh, I just couldn't help it. I was just overcome with ananda-- utter bliss. I saw you talking with Aiden. - Yeah. - Thank God. You got over your worries about him. Well, I think he truly loves my little girl, and they both just exude, uh... good spiritual vibrations. Are you trying to sound like me? You're terrible at it.

[Laughs] But you're wonderful at this. You know, you're gonna love California. They don't call it the land of sun and fun for nothing.

[Chuckles] Right. Oh, hey, I just remembered. I, um... I missed my Physics class yesterday. If JJ's got his notes in his bag, maybe I can borrow them-- oh, no, actually, he missed yesterday too. Um, he overslept. Uh, JJ and I have to bounce anyway. We're gonna catch a movie. Yeah, well, enjoy.

Paige: Thanks.

[Sighs] A nice, long movie... perfect. I'll have to play it by ear with Eve, but we'll see how it goes. Yeah, then maybe one day she'll realize how important it is to-- I'll just, uh-- I'll text you, okay? Okay. Hey, Daniel, have you seen Theresa? Uh, no. Well, you know what? I got the weirdest text from her, saying that she was on a plane getting ready to land and wanted me to meet her at the hospital. Something must be wrong. No. Theresa is fine. Well, how would you know if you haven't seen her? Because she's with Melanie. Oh, given everything you just said...

[Sighs] Maybe you should go.

[Sighs] But on the other hand... I don't want you to.

Hope: Have fun, stay together.

[Chuckles] Uh... thank you so much for doing this today. Baby, you don't have to thank me. - I really enjoyed it. - Yeah, me too. - Yeah? - A lot. - Did you? - Yes. Come here. So... I saw that you and Julie really had your heads together there. You don't miss a trick, do you? No, I don't. Anything I should know? I was just, you know, explaining that sometimes it's very difficult for us because of our work. But, actually, you know what? It was really-- it was really nice to be able to talk about it, which gave me another brilliant idea. Another brilliant idea. Okay. It is possible that one of us can make a change, you know. Make things an awful lot easier. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Wait a minute. Are you serious? You would quit your job? What? No. Why would you think that? What do you mean why would I think-- you just brought up making a change. I said "one of us." Yeah, I see what you mean. Talking about me, dropping a client. Oh. - Oh. - Aiden, come on. - What? - Don't get upset. I just thought maybe we could talk through it. Well, I thought we did. I thought we agreed not to deal with this today. I know, but I don't like to avoid things. It almost never works. Daniel, I don't think I need to remind you that your daughter and Theresa hate each other. So why would they be traveling together? Well, it is a very long, long story...

[Phone vibrates]

Hold on. Sorry. Just a sec. Oh, Melanie says she just landed. I got nothing here. Oh, Theresa is such a flake. My gosh. "Where are"-- Eve. Hey. Jennifer. How are things going for you today?

[Sighs] Okay. If I'm Deveraux... where do I hide my stash? Bedroom. - Oh, wait. - What? - The movie's already sold out. - Really? Well, I knew it was a hot ticket, but still... mm. Hold on. - You know what? - What? We just got handed a load of free time. Want to celebrate? Yes, Mr. San Jose state. At my place? If my mom is there, we could tell her. Great. Let's go.

[Sighs] I'd say you made the case for discretion even better than I did. And I assume you're being honest. I was too. Nicole, I can't hurt the people I care about. It's a rule I live by. It's a rule I'll die by. So, if somehow you and Daniel do manage to work things out... I know. You'll be happy for both of us. Well, yeah... and no.

No, you're right--avoidance is not my first choice, but in this instance, why deal with it at all? If it involved a different case, maybe, but this involves a certain person. Who is my client. Isn't this where you tell me it doesn't matter because Clyde Weston is up to no good? - You said it. I didn't. - Oh-- damn it, hope. I'm not going to do this with you. I'm not going to drop a client because you have a hunch, not a case. Because it's so important for you to represent a criminal? You know what? Forget it. Chase, come on, buddy, we got to go. Hold on a second. Don't go. You know, I'm so sorry that such a terrific day had to end like this, okay? Sorrier than you know. Hey, dad, Ciara and I want to check out the new bikes-- no, look, I'm sorry. We don't have time. We're already late, okay? Let's go. - Bye, Ciara. - Bye, Chase. Bye. - Bye, Aiden. - Yeah. Mom, what happened? What happened? Your mother put her foot in her mouth. That's what happened. Okay, Melanie is heading into customs, then home. You can't use your cell in customs, so she'll be in touch. The same is probably true for Theresa. Well-- you will want to wait here for when she arrives. Why would she want me to meet her at the hospital, Daniel? - Do you know think she's sick? - No, she's not sick. Okay, listen, I need to call my mom, and then I need to meet Melanie at my apartment. So everything else is just going to have to wait.

Eve: Why can't you tell me what's going on here? Because, frankly, I really don't know. - Really? - Really. So you just wait here, sit tight. Theresa will be here soon, and everybody is fine.

[Stomps foot, groans]

[Sighs] I know that waiting can be really frustrating, but-- as if you care. Really? Okay, you know what? I'm sorry. That was-- that was a reflex. I'm not in the mood to fight with you today, Jennifer. Neither am I, Eve. Actually, as a matter of fact, I've been thinking about some of the things that you said, that I need to take a good look at myself and why I'm so angry, you know, take a step back.

[Scoffs] You probably thought you'd never hear me say that, right? But you made a good point. I need to stop fighting this Paige and JJ thing and just let them work it out, you know. Let... whatever happens happen.

JJ: You can call me Mr. Sunshine.

[Giggles] Stop it, come on, or your mom will think - we're both crazy. - Oh, let her. She'll be laughing too once we tell her. I'd like to think to myself as an honest person. Now, up until now, you and I, we've-- we've just been friends, and as a friend, I care about you, especially knowing that things haven't really been going your way recently. I want to help fix that if I can. Of course, uh, maybe no one can. Well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. But sometimes... one door closes, but another one opens. Could be. Uh-huh. I truly hope you meant what you said earlier about keeping this private... just between us. You know I did. I could tell you... how I feel about you, Nicole. But right now... I'd rather show you.
