Aiden: Is something wrong? Do you want to stop? I'm sorry, hope. I... I pushed you into it. It was too soon.
[Both speaking Japanese]
Daniel: Uh, if I'm interrupting...
Paul: You're not. Dr. Jonas, this is my agent, Satoru Aoki.
Daniel: Very nice to meet you. I'll be operating on your star client today. Should be a routine repair.
Satoru: My client is anything but a routine case. That's why we came to you for the surgery, Dr. Jonas.
Daniel: You haven't had anything to eat today, right?
Paul: No. I'm starving.
Maxine: Too bad. Here's his chart.
Daniel: Thank you. We'll get started, uh, pretty soon.
Paul: Once you fix the shoulder, maybe I can do what I always dreamed of doing.
Satoru: Perfecting your cutter?
Paul: Playing the violin. [Chuckles]
Jordan: It is so good to see you around here again.
Abigail: It is nice to have my job back, especially one I liked.
Jordan: Mm. You never told me how you got reinstated. I mean, did Sami Brady do something to fix this for you before she left?
Abigail: No. Uh, no, the person that got my job back for me was Chad.
Ben: I didn't see you come in.
Chad: I know whatever you were thinking about wasn't the job. Coffee never puts that kind of smile on a guy's face.
Daphne: Paige, wait up!
Paige: You better hurry, Daphne. We're already late for bio.
Daphne: That's what I wanted to tell you. I just got an email. Lab's canceled.
Paige: You sure?
Daphne: Uh, yeah, the email's from the lab instructor.
Paige: Oh. Okay, I better text JJ. He was going to meet Daniel and then go straight to the lab.
Daphne: Oh, you know his schedule? Sounds like you two are okay.
Paige: I won't lie. It was pretty bad for a while. I didn't know if things would ever work out. But they did. I'm so happy.
JJ: It has to be over between Paige and me?
[Cell phone ringing]
Eve: JJ, listen to me. We slept together last night. How could you even consider a future with my daughter?
Aiden: I'm, uh... I'm sorry. I-I thought we were... both ready for this, and, obviously, I-I was wrong, so...
Hope: No. You're not wrong.
Aiden: Now, hope, I, uh, haven't been in the dating scene for a while, but when you're alone in a room with a woman and you're kissing her and she does this...
Aiden: It's not a good sign.
Hope: I want to be here with you.
Aiden: But that's not the whole story, is it?
Eve: Oh. How are you gonna date Paige, get serious with her, with this big secret that's over your head the whole time, huh? How are we gonna carry that one off, JJ? And what am I supposed to do-- say, "hey, you kids, you guys have a really good time," when I've seen you naked?
JJ: We can fix it so that we don't have to see each other that much.
Eve: Oh, really? Well... what if you decide to, um, ask Paige to marry you, say? Now, how you gonna fix it so that you don't see me then, huh?
JJ: That's years from now!
Eve: It doesn't matter, JJ! What, you think you're going to be living some kind of sweet love story here? I'm telling you right now, a secret like that never dies. Do you really want to live the rest of your life afraid that-- look at me-- that she's gonna find out about us? Because I'm telling you right now, if she finds out, it'll be over for you and her, and it'll be over for her and me. You really want to do that to the woman that you say that you love so much? My budget used to be a real downer.
Satoru: Paul makes light of this, but very few of your patients have a 96-mile-per-hour fastball.
Daniel: Yeah, well, I take care of all of my patients, and I take them very seriously.
Satoru: Hey, just as long as he's ready for spring training.
Daniel: He will be ready when I say he's ready. Uh, we'll, uh--we'll rehab that shoulder while he's here for a while, and then I will talk to the team's doctor about what comes next. Any questions?
Paul: Let's do it.
Daniel: Well, someone from the P.T. Department will come in to go over what comes next.
Paul: Think that person from the P.T. Department will be that gorgeous woman I'll be working with?
Maxine: Sorry, player. I don't have that information. Open your mouth.
Jordan: How did Chad get you your job back?
Abigail: Well, uh, the thing is... would you excuse me for a minute, Jordan? I-I have to say something to Dr. Jonas. Hi.
Daniel: Hey. I heard through the grapevine that you might be coming back. Glad to see it's true.
Abigail: Yeah, me too.
Daniel: Same, uh--same job?
Abigail: Uh, I'm running my mom's office while she's taking care of grandma.
Daniel: Yeah, have you, um-- have you talked to your mom yet?
Abigail: Yeah. Yeah, she told me that the two of your couldn't work things out. And I just wanted to say I'm really sorry.
Daniel: Yeah, me, uh--me too.
Abigail: I always thought you were a great guy, Daniel. I still do.
Daniel: You still do?
Daniel: All right, well, thank you. You know I'll always have special feelings for you and JJ. I hope that I can still be a friend to both of you.
Abigail: I hope so too, and I'm sure JJ feels the same.
Daniel: Yeah, I saw him just a little bit ago, and there's something he needed to sort out.
Abigail: Is he okay?
Daniel: Yeah, I think so. I think so. He said he felt better after we, um--after we talked.
JJ: You're lying to Paige about last night just like I am, but I'm the one that has to lose everything?
Eve: JJ... I'm not making this all your fault. I'm really not. I know what I did. And I know I have to live with that, and that is... I don't know how I'm going to find a way to do it, but I know that I've got to. Paige is my daughter. She needs her mother.
JJ: Well, she was on her own when I met her, and she was doing just fine.
Eve: Well, I'm sure she acted like she was just fine around you, but I happen to know that she was lonely and depressed, and she was miserable, and she missed me terribly. And she was thrilled that I was back. And I can tell you right now, if anything were to happen that--our relationship would've been disrupted... she'll be devastated.
JJ: But if she lost me, on the other hand, it would just be a big "who cares," right?
Eve: Look... I can't stop being her mom, but, uh, you can stop being her boyfriend.
JJ: All right, you don't get to decide that.
Eve: You cheated on her!
JJ: With you!
Eve: Well, then that makes it even worse! No couple can survive that, JJ! You listen to me. It's time that we start thinking about what's best for Paige right now. You have to think about that. And you lying to her is not what is best.
JJ: Then I won't.
JJ: I'll tell her the truth.
Paige: JJ didn't text me back. I guess he's busy.
Daphne: What was wrong with you guys, anyway?
Paige: Uh, JJ had something on his mind-- something big, and he didn't want to tell me about it.
Daphne: Something about you?
Paige: [Sighs] That's what I thought. So then I started getting upset.
Daphne: But you guys figured everything out, huh?
Paige: Now there's nothing we can't tell each other.
Abigail: Chad took EJ's seat on the hospital board, and the first thing he did was make sure I got my job back.
Jordan: Well, good for him.
Abigail: Yeah, yeah, he... he really stood up for me.
Jordan: Does Ben know that?
Abigail: He does, yeah. And he gets it, now... well, at least that's what he says.
Jordan: Mm. You don't believe him?
Abigail: He and Chad--you know, they have their issues. But I think he's glad I'm here, especially now since he's in such a good mood. You heard about the new apartment, right?
Jordan: So he's going ahead with that?
Abigail: Yeah, well, he can afford it now, you know, that--
Jordan: That Clyde's paying tuition, I know.
Abigail: Yeah. If you're worried that Ben and Clyde are going to get closer--
Jordan: No, I'm not. I-I told you that last night. Well, hey, I am supposed to be consulting with a patient before he goes into shoulder surgery.
Abigail: Paul Narita?
Abigail: Yeah, I'm supposed to see him too.
Jordan: Well, then I guess we better get going, right?
Ben: For someone who said he didn't intend on being part of the day-to-day here, you sure have been hanging out here a lot.
Chad: That was before sonny decided to open a second club. He's got his hands full with the new place.
Ben: Oh, so I won't be seeing him as much?
Chad: You could. I'm thinking we should move you over there once the new place is ready to open.
Ben: But the new place is over on the south side. I just signed the lease on an apartment that's, like, walking distance from here.
Chad: I know.
Hope: It might surprise you. Um... [Chuckles] I'm a little scared... nervous a little... a lot, um... yeah, I am--I am a lot scared.
Aiden: I didn't think anything scared you.
Hope: It's weird. I-- because I can disarm a wild-eyed junkie with a box cutter, but this--I don't quite know how to handle myself. Maybe it's more accurate to say I... I've forgotten.
Hope: Aiden, I haven't been with anyone but my husband... in a very long time. And he's been gone for over, you know, two years.
Aiden: Well, you know what we can do? We can spend the rest of the afternoon in this room. We can just... play cards, order room service, watch cable.
Aiden: Or we can check out right now. It's--it's... it's okay.
Hope: Thank you, thank you, thank you for saying that. That's not what I want... not at all. I understand what's happening between us. I want it to happen. I filed for divorce, as you know, for, well, you know, a lot of reasons... [Sighs] But also because of how I feel about you. But...
Aiden: You're still scared.
Aiden: That makes sense.
Hope: Really? It does?
Aiden: It must... because I feel the same way.
Paul: I just decided that I don't need surgery.
Abigail: Wha-- that's a joke, right?
Paul: You know, the funny thing is, when you ladies walked in, a miracle happened. My shoulder feels great.
Maxine: Time to go to the surgical suite.
Paul: I'll see you tomorrow?
Paul: I'll sign that donation form now.
Abigail: Sure. Great. Thank you so much.
Paul: When you smile like that, I'd do anything you ask.
Satoru: [Speaking Japanese]
Paul: [Speaking Japanese]
Abigail: Wow. Does he hit on every woman that enters that room?
Jordan: Uh, pretty much.
Abigail: What do you think they were saying to each other?
Jordan: Probably just trying to find out if we're single.
Abigail: [Laughs] Right.
Ben: I don't mind picking up some extra shifts at the new place, but I like working here.
Chad: You're getting in on the ground floor of a new place. That means lots of opportunity, overtime, more money.
Ben: Okay, so I'll either be commuting or working.
Chad: There's pros and cons with every new job.
Ben: Yeah, but the cons are for me. The pros are for you.
Chad: How do you see that?
Ben: Because you know I'll never have any time to spend with Abigail.
Daphne: Do you remember that day you were at my house, and we heard JJ practicing his guitar out in the garage?
Paige: Oh, right, yeah.
Daphne: All of a sudden, you got this... look on your face. You fell in love with him that day, didn't you? Without even knowing him.
Paige: I should have made you tell me more about him.
Daphne: I didn't know anything about him. He went to boarding school.
Paige: You knew he was cute. I remember you saying that.
Daphne: All a person has to do is look at him once to know he's cute.
Paige: He's way more than that. My mom's always telling me that I'm an old soul, but, uh... I think that's what JJ is too.
Daphne: Okay, so... now that you and JJ have figured things out... does that mean your mom's gonna lighten up about him?
Eve: You think about this, JJ. You go to Paige and you tell her that we slept together... it will crush her.
JJ: Maybe at first, but if I'm honest--
Eve: What do you think--you have some magic way of taking away the pain here? Listen, I know my daughter. I know what she'll do. She'll be devastated. She'll turn on me, that's for sure. But I can tell you, it's not going to be good for you either, because she's had a daddy that's been in her life and then out of her life the next day. And she has a hard time trusting men to begin with. But you tell her what we did... she will never trust you another day of your life, and then she will spend the rest of her life knowing that the two people that love her most... betrayed her. JJ, come on, how can you even think about doing something like that to Paige?
Hope: I can't imagine you being scared in this situation.
Aiden: You say it's been a long time for you. I... I completely shut down after my wife died. I mean, everything... became about chase, my career. That's what kept me going on, you know. The idea of starting with some new woman-- no, it seemed impossible. The idea of telling someone... about how my wife died... using the word "suicide"... trying to explain what happened that night... and what the days and nights were like afterwards, no... but then you came along... and everything... everything seemed possible again.
Hope: Wow. Hey... it feels like we've lived a whole year this afternoon, doesn't it?
Aiden: Yeah. Yeah. You know, we, um... have a lot of afternoons ahead of us... and nights. Maybe we shared enough for one day, hmm? Maybe we shouldn't push it. But maybe you already knew that. That's why you pulled away. [Sighs] Okay...
Daniel: How are you feeling?
Paul: Like a million bucks.
Daniel: All right, well, the anesthesiologist is going to put you to sleep now. So I want you to count backwards from ten.
Paul: [Counting in Japanese]
Daniel: Here we go. Scalpel.
Paige: My mom got some really bad news yesterday. She's so upset, and she needs me now. But we're closer than we've been. I can talk to her.
Paige: So maybe she will ease up on JJ. Well, she said she'd try anyway. Mom had her heart set on starting up her singing career again, but her surgeon told her that the problem with her vocal cords isn't operable, so she won't be able to sing anymore. That's why she was in such bad shape last night.
[Cell phone ringing]
Paige: Oh, maybe that's JJ.
Daphne: Oh, no, it's me. [Clears throat] God, my frat-boy lab partner didn't go to a single lecture last week, and now he wants all my notes ASAP. That guy should've majored in beer pong. He'd be on the dean's list.
Paige: [Laughs] I'll talk to you later.
Eric: Excuse me. Are you Paige Larson?
Eric: I know your mother. I recognize you from the pictures she showed me at your apartment.
Paige: Oh... I see. Uh, when were you there?
JJ: [Sighs] Okay. I won't tell her.
Eve: I really hope you mean that.
JJ: I mean it, all right?
Eve: Okay! But you know what? You were ready to just run out of here and shoot your mouth off without thinking about the consequences, JJ! You know, maybe you don't love my daughter as much as you say that you do, or maybe you're just not ready for that kind of love, hmm? We made a horrible mistake. And now because of what we did, you have to accept that it's over for you and Paige... over.
JJ: And that's what you wanted. I-I don't believe it. You did this on purpose. You did it to break up Paige and me. I'm only in my 60's.
Paige: Uh, you were at our apartment yesterday?
Eric: I'm sorry. I didn't introduce myself. Eric Brady. Your mother--she hired me to shoot her publicity photos.
Paige: Oh, I-I didn't know that.
Eric: Yeah, she was very excited about restarting her singing career.
Paige: She can't do it now.
Eric: I know. I saw her this morning. She told me what the doctor said. I was there just a few hours before she got the news, and she seemed really excited, and I'm sorry.
Paige: Thanks. It hit her really hard.
Eric: But I can tell you the one thing that matters to your mother more than singing is you. I get the sense, the way eve talked about you, that there's nothing that she wouldn't do for you.
Eve: You think that I took you to bed... just to break up you and Paige? Are you serious?
JJ: I am dead serious.
Eve: JJ... come on, you saw me last night. I was a wreck. The new life that I was trying to build for myself had just blown up!
JJ: Yeah, I know that's what you told me.
Eve: Oh, my God. So you think that I was just faking all that so I could get you into my bed? Really? Okay, well, how did I know that you were going to be coming over to the apartment just at that exact time, huh? How did I know that you were gonna be in the same mood that I was in? What, was I having you followed or something? Or--oh, oh, maybe I was just that much of a mastermind, huh? 'Cause let me tell you something, little man. If the cards hadn't fallen the way that they had, there's no way that either one of us would've come near the other one! You got that?
JJ: Yep! I got it, all right? All right? Enough.
Eve: JJ, please... stop fighting me on this.
Abigail: I'm sorry I keep bringing up your stepfather.
Jordan: You didn't. You were talking about Ben.
Abigail: The two of you are so different. Ben tells me a lot about what his childhood was like, but it doesn't seem like you want to... which is fine. It's your business, not mine. Uh, and I'll try not to talk about what Ben tells me.
Abigail: I don't want to lose you as a friend, Jordan.
Jordan: [Sighs] You won't. And just so you know, I have never seen Ben this happy or this serious about anyone before. I just really don't want to see him get hurt.
Abigail: Are you afraid that I'm going to hurt him? Because I would never--
Jordan: No, I know that. I wasn't talking about you.
Abigail: Ben's worried about you too.
Abigail: He thinks that you might be getting too close to Chad.
Chad: I offer you a great opportunity, and you turn that into me trying to come between you and Abigail. I mean, how'd you work that out?
Ben: Maybe if you told me why you want me at the new place.
Chad: I just think it's a better fit for you. It's nothing personal, Ben.
Ben: Okay, just like you throwing around your family name to get Abigail her job back. It's nothing personal, though, right?
Chad: Okay, I know you're trying to zing me. But you happen to be right. That one was as personal as it gets.
Daniel: No wonder he was in so much pain. That bone spur didn't show up in the MRI.
Maxine: Well, he's good to go now. Good job.
Daniel: Thank you. All right, let's get him closed up.
Paige: Uh... [Chuckles] What did my mom say about me?
Eric: Not a whole lot. She just made it very clear how important you are to her, how much she loves you.
Paige: I love her too.
Eric: Listen, the reason why I bothered you--I just wanted to see if you could do me a favor.
Paige: Oh, sure. And you didn't bother me. Please...
Eric: Oh, thank you. Well, before she talked to the surgeon she said she'd like to see the photos from the publicity shoot, and I just don't know how she would feel about that now.
Eric: So I was wondering, maybe you could take home the proofs? You know, you go home. You kind of judge the situation, and you determine whether or not she would like them or not.
Paige: I could do that. But I think she'd like to see you.
Eric: Are you sure?
Paige: She doesn't have many friends in town, and it sounds like you two got along really well.
Eric: Really? Hmm. You'd know better than anyone.
Paige: I should. I'm the person she spends all her time with. And I really think...
Paige: That it'd be good for her to spend time with her contemporaries, you know... people her own age.
JJ: I know what you want me to say to Paige. I just don't know how to say it.
Eve: It'll come to you.
[Cell phone ringing]
JJ: Well, I've been getting texts. Maybe it's her. Her class got canceled, and she wants to see me. You got any ideas about how I'm supposed to do this?
Eve: You'll think of something. You just put your mind to it.
[Cell phone ringing]
Jordan: Ben doesn't have anything to worry about. I can take care of myself. Are you worried too?
Abigail: About you and Chad? You're not as naive as I was when I was with him, and maybe he's changed.
Jordan: Well, I don't know the guy he was then. All I know is that he's been really nice to me. And, hey, if he got you your job back, then maybe he's trying to make up for what he did to you, you know.
Jordan: I got to go.
Ben: So you're after Abigail again? You admit it.
Chad: It's personal because of the way it ended between Abigail and me. Now, I'm sure she told you about that. See, I-I owe her. I also think she got a raw deal from Sami, no matter what happened between her and EJ. That is why I went to bat for her with the hospital board. I mean, would you rather her still be out of a job?
Chad: Then why are you harping on this? Because it's your sister that I'm interested in, not Abigail. And just so you know, I think the interest is mutual, which means, of the four of us, you are the only one who has a problem with how things are working out. Maybe you need to get over that.
Ben: [Exhales deeply]
Hope: Do you need your other hand to hold the glass?
Aiden: I'm trying to impress you with my backhand.
Hope: You've already impressed me.
Aiden: Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, here is to... making love and drinking champagne in the middle of the day.
Hope: Hear, hear. I feel so happy right now.
Aiden: Let me tell you this. I don't think I can even remember being this happy.
Eric: You know, after what you told me this morning, I didn't know whether to bring them by or not.
Eve: Oh, I'll be fine. My gosh, looking at these, I just remember how excited I was the day that you shot-- you remember? I was like, ah!
Eve: But, you know, life's like that, isn't it? I mean, we get our hopes up, and then-- I don't know--things just don't turn out the way that you wanted them to.
Eric: That's often been my experience.
Eve: Yeah. And then I guess it's up to us to figure out how to deal with the fallout.
Paige: I just want to forget about the past few weeks, because... [Voice breaking] The only thing that matters is that I love you.
JJ: I love you too, Paige.
Chad: Do you deliver to university hospital? Yeah, but I-I don't-- no, I don't want you to call her and tell her she's got a delivery coming. Yeah, I want it to be a surprise. Great. Jordan Ridgeway. Want me to spell that?
Daniel: Are you, uh--you in any pain?
Paul: No. The pain meds they gave me in the recovery room took care of that.
Daniel: Well, the meds will keep you kind of out of it for a little while, but Maxine's here. She can take care of you. And if you need me, she will, uh--she will page me.
Paul: Thank you for everything, doctor.
Daniel: You bet.
Jordan: All right, we will begin your treatment as soon as Dr. Jonas gives the okay. It'll probably be a couple of days, but I'll check in with you until then.
Paul: Well, then whatever he just did to my shoulder was worth it.
Satoru: What I want to know is if the surgery did what it was supposed to do.
Daniel: You mean, when can he pitch? We won't know for weeks.
Satoru: One of the reasons we decided to come here for this surgery was because it would be easier to keep this quiet. The longer his recovery period drags out, the harder it's going to be to maintain secrecy.
Daniel: Paul's surgery was a little more complicated than I expected--
Satoru: My client is a free agent. There are millions of dollars at stake here.
Daniel: I'm not Paul's pitching coach. I'm not his agent either. And I really don't give a damn about your 10%. All I care about is getting my patient completely healed.
Hope: Time flies while you're having fun.
Aiden: Ah, then we have kids to pick up? And to show you how gallant I am, I'll let you shower first.
Hope: How very kind of you... although I may need someone to wash my back.
Aiden: Start the water, and I will be right there.
Hope: I'm glad we didn't wait any longer.
Aiden: Me too. [Sighs]
Eric: I really admire the way you're handling that.
Eve: Well, life doesn't give you much choice than just to get on with it, you know.
Eric: True, and I'm going to get going so you can do that.
Eve: Okay, I just wish, you know, I hadn't gotten my hopes up so much. Actually, I wish none of it had happened.
Eric: Hey you know what? I forgot to tell you.
Eric: I met, uh, Paige today.
Eve: You did?
Eric: Yeah, you were right about her. She's a lovely girl.
Eve: Well, I'm glad you think that. You know, she's probably the best thing that ever happened to me, that's for sure. Did you guys talk about me?
Eric: She's upset about what happened to you. She's really looking out for you.
Eve: Well, Paige and I-- we look out for each other.
Paige: So you talked to Daniel? How'd it go?
JJ: We're fine. Yeah, it was good.
Paige: Something's wrong. I can tell.
JJ: Well, I promised that I wasn't going to lie to you, um, anymore. There is something wrong.
Paige: Okay. What is it?
