[Knock at door]
Hope: Come in.
Aiden: Hey, you got a sec?
Hope: Hey, uh, no, not really.
Hope: However, I definitely could, uh, use a few minutes away from this case.
Aiden: Well, then I have the perfect distraction for you.
Aiden: Oh, yes.
Hope: Oh, no.
Aiden: Yes, yes. Come with me. Come on.
Hope: Thank you.
JJ: Russ, did you happen to see Paige Larson today?
Russ: She didn't show for her shift.
JJ: Okay. All right, thank you.
[Cell phone beeping]
John: Hey, doc. It's been a while.
Brady: What the--
Theresa: Morning, sunshine.
Jennifer: Okay, we got to...
Daniel: Okay. No.
Jennifer: Put ice on this.
Daniel: I don't know what you're doing, but I'm fine.
Jennifer: No, no, no, you're not f--ooh, sorry. And it's my fault, because if I would've just put my bag up high in a closet instead of on the floor where you could trip over it, this wouldn't have happened.
Daniel: No. I should've brought a light before I went wandering in a basement. Where was I--the kitchen? I'm lightheaded here.
Jennifer: Well, don't worry, 'cause I'm gonna take care of it, and it's gonna be all better.
Daniel: Really? I'm healing right now.
Jennifer: Oh, good.
Daniel: Oh, and they're very sweet kisses too.
Jennifer: Do you know that sometimes I think that I'm the luckiest woman on the earth.
Daniel: Well, are you?
Jennifer: Yes, I am.
Jennifer: [Gasps] I'm sorry. But after yesterday, I felt bad. I mean, here Nicole and Eric had this wonderful news about being engaged, and Nicole just seemed so upset.
Daniel: Okay, you know, I really don't want to talk about Nicole anymore. Let's just... let's just focus on us.
Daniel: Just us.
Jennifer: And ice.
Daniel: And ice.
Jennifer: Ice on your lip.
Jennifer: I'll kiss around the ice.
Daniel: I like that.
Daniel: You could be a nurse.
Daniel: Either you tell Eric what you've done, or I will.
Eric: How long have you been awake?
Nicole: A while.
Eric: You okay?
Nicole: No. Actually, I'm not.
Eric: What is it?
Nicole: There's something I should've done... something that I need to do, something I should've done last night.
John: Glad I ran into you. You know, I've been in Europe working on basic black's fall line.
Marlena: I know.
John: And you knew I'd be back.
Marlena: Yes. I'm--I'm not sure if there's anything for us to talk about. The divorce is... proceeding as planned.
John: Yeah, yeah, so I understand. [Sniffs]
Marlena: Have you seen Brady since you've been back?
Marlena: He wasn't very receptive, was he? You know, you really can't be surprised by this. Has it occurred to you to face the fact that there's really nothing here for you anymore... nothing left for you at all?
Brady: [Grunts] Oh.
Theresa: I hope I didn't wake you.
Brady: No, no, you didn't. I should probably hop in the shower.
Theresa: Mm, I could hop in with you.
Brady: That probably wouldn't be a great idea.
Theresa: Well, then why don't we grab a mimosa before work? It'll be like old times. Besides, I think you could use the vitamin "C."
Brady: Hmm... listen, about last night... we need to get something straight.
Jennifer: No, no, back to ice.
Daniel: Back to us.
Jennifer: Yes, ice.
Daniel: No, us.
Jennifer: Ice. And I want to talk to you about something, and I don't want you to get mad at me.
Daniel: Mad at you? About what?
Jennifer: Well, I know... that you avoided telling me why Nicole was so upset yesterday, and you were upset yourself. And it--when I asked you, for some reason, you weren't happy about Nicole and Eric getting engaged. You said that you weren't, and knowing Nicole, I just feel like it's something bigger, Daniel.
Daniel: Honey, it's nothing you have to worry about.
Jennifer: Well, Nicole's my friend, and you are the man that I love, and I am hoping against hope...
Jennifer: That history is not repeating itself. So please tell me that she is not asking you to do something that you don't want to do.
Eric: So what do you need to do?
Nicole: [Inhales deeply] Swollen finger or no... I am never taking this ring off again.
JJ: I can't believe she's ignoring me. Well, maybe I can.
[Cell phone beeping]
Hope: Look, even though we finally have some great items for the silent auction, we still need to book a venue, stat.
Aiden: Yes, and I have an idea.
Hope: You do?
Hope: I've already called every restaurant and club in town and haven't had any luck.
Aiden: What about the Salem inn where it's always been?
Hope: The sal--but Mr. Howell and the north Midwest domino association--
Aiden: Yeah, they booked it. I know, but don't worry about that.
Hope: Don't worry about that?
Aiden: No, don't worry about that, 'cause I got a new plan. And it's gonna get us exactly what we want.
Theresa: I don't understand. I mean, I thought we had a good time last night, because you said--
Brady: I know. I know what I said--we did. It's just I, you know...
Theresa: I mean, you do remember last night?
Brady: Of course I remember last night. I just wasn't thinking that clearly last night.
Theresa: You're trying to tell me that last night was a mistake? Because I thought we worked through all that.
[Cell phone ringing]
Brady: [Groans] [Sighs] Um, Theresa, I got to take this. Sorry.
Theresa: It's fine. I'll give you a minute.
Brady: Thank you. [Sighs] Hello?
John: Hey, kid. I'm glad you answered.
Brady: What do you want?
John: I want to apologize. Look, son... when I suggested that you and I work together to bring down Kristen, the last thing that I wanted was to upset you more than I already did.
Brady: Yeah, well, it's too late for that. See you.
[Cell phone clatters]
Brady: [Groans] Sorry. Sorry about that.
Brady: How about we get dressed... and we go get those mimosas?
Daniel: Uh, Nicole isn't making me do anything I don't want to do.
Jennifer: Then what's going on?
Daniel: Jenn, I promised Parker a video chat this morning, and I know that you have a lot to do before lunch with Abe and Maxine.
Jennifer: I do. I don't mean to nag you.
Daniel: You didn't. You don't. I will talk to you later. I promise you.
Jennifer: Okay. Okay. I'll leave you this ice.
Jennifer: I really am sorry.
Daniel: Sorry about what?
Jennifer: That in spite of everything, Nicole makes you unhappy.
Daniel: I didn't say that.
Jennifer: You didn't have to... because I know Nicole. And I know sometimes it can get more complicated than you ever imagine.
Daniel: "Nicole, are you okay? How did Eric take the news?"
Nicole: This ring... being with you last night... I would call my dream come true. But...
Nicole: It's even better. [Chuckles]
Eric: Okay, I'd love to spend all day with you.
Nicole: Well, you know, there's always the night.
Nicole: All right, go. Get up. [Chuckles]
[Cell phone vibrates]
Nicole: [Scoffs] I have got to find a way out of this.
Aiden: Well, I did a little bit of research after our last meeting.
Hope: You did? And?
Aiden: And via a few favors, a friend of a friend helped me set up a fake email account.
Hope: Okay, no, no, no. I don't think I like where this is going.
Aiden: No, no, no, no.
Aiden: Let me--let me finish, okay? Mr. Howell is set to receive an exclusive invitation to Sault St. Marie for a tutorial with Mr. Woody Mitchell.
Hope: Woody Mitchell? Who's woody Mitchell?
Aiden: Woody Mitchell happens to be the most famous domino player in the U.S. Of A. Now, unfortunately, this exclusive invite coincides with the weekend of our gala. Mr. Howell will have to change the date of the regional tournament. The inn will be ours.
Hope: Hmm. This is totally unethical and underhanded. We're not doing this.
Aiden: Okay, look, I knew this was gonna be your reaction...
Hope: Oh, no, don't tell me. La la la la la la!
Aiden: I went ahead and did it without you...
Jennifer: Hi, honey.
Paige: Uh, hi, Mrs. Deveraux. Sorry to drop by without calling.
Jennifer: Oh, no, that's fine. If you're looking for JJ, he's not home.
Paige: Oh, thanks.
Jennifer: Paige... are you okay? Is everything all right between you and JJ?
Daniel: JJ. Your mom--she already left.
JJ: Oh, no, actually, I came to talk to you.
Daniel: Oh, okay. Well, yeah, come on in.
JJ: What happened to your--
Daniel: Ah, I just--I fell. It's no big deal... no big deal at all. Here, please, just have a seat.
JJ: I'll try not to take too much of your time.
Daniel: Take as much as you need. What's up?
JJ: Um, well, uh... I think that last night, I-I-I kind of screwed up with a girl. I mean, a-a friend. I mean-- I came to get some advice.
Daniel: What, are you talking about Paige?
JJ: Um, we went out, and I wound up in not the best mood. And, um, I didn't want to get into it, and I think that she took it personally.
Daniel: Well, did you try explaining it to her?
JJ: She's totally ignoring my texts.
Daniel: Okay, you know that apologizing on a text--it's...
Daniel: Lame, yeah. You need to go see her face-to-face. Sort it out that way.
JJ: No, man. You're right, I know. But I have to find her, so I can talk to her.
Daniel: Yeah, well, I, uh-- I know what you mean.
Nicole: I can't tell Eric the truth. I got to find a way out of this. (Vo) welcome to the world of
Eric: Your office said you were gonna be here. Is this a bad time?
Marlena: No, no. I finished up the meeting already. And what can I do for you?
Eric: I just wanted to know if you talked to Sami. I mean, how is Allie doing?
Marlena: What Allie saw will stay with her the rest of her life. And Sami is being very good about getting therapy for her.
Eric: I'm sure she is.
Marlena: Thank you so much for calling me.
Eric: Of course.
Marlena: [Laughs] Was there something else you wanted to talk to me about?
Eric: How do you know that?
Marlena: Because... [Laughs] I'm your mother. I know--I know everything.
Eric: You always know. I know.
Marlena: What is it?
Eric: Sit down. I didn't have a chance to tell you, for obvious reasons, and I didn't want you to hear it from anybody else. I asked Nicole to marry me. So look for your invitation soon. We're not gonna wait any longer than we have to to be man and wife.
Theresa: To starting the day off right.
Brady: Mm. Cheers. I can't stay long, though. I got to swing by the house before I go to the office.
Theresa: Come on, you're the boss. So, if you decided that you wanted another drink... or another kiss, I'm pretty sure you could.
Brady: It's a tough call.
Brady: I'll take both. [Whispering indistinctly]
JJ: I know that I need to sit down and have a real conversation with Paige, but--
Daniel: All right, but?
JJ: [Sighs] Besides the problem of her not speaking to me, I'm--I'm not sure how I'm going to explain what happened last night.
Daniel: Uh-huh. What exactly did happen?
[Cell phone vibrates]
JJ: Paige and I were on a date at club TBD, and she was outside on a phone call with her mom, and I ran into Theresa.
Daniel: Hmm, and let me guess. She got under your skin in a way that only Theresa can, yeah?
JJ: I let it go. I walked out, and when Paige was done, she--she saw me, and she knew that something was bothering me.
Daniel: Right, and you didn't want to talk about Theresa.
JJ: Paige already knows about Theresa... I mean, kind of.
Daniel: "Kind of"? Just not the details?
JJ: I-I broke the law, and-- and Paige probably hasn't even broken curfew. She's on the--she's on the honor roll, and she's going to Stanford. I don't think--
Daniel: What, you don't think what--she would understand? Did you even give her that chance, man?
JJ: Well, she got upset, and she walked out. I don't blame her.
Daniel: Oh, okay, okay. What exactly did Theresa say?
JJ: [Sighs] She asked me if the girl that I was with knew what kind of guy I was, what kind of guy I really am.
Daniel: What kind of guy do you think you are, JJ?
JJ: I never really paid for what I did. And if it wasn't for you, I'd be in prison right now. And I had to blackmail Theresa so she would stop blackmailing me. How did I make such a mess of things?
Daniel: Okay, if you were anything like Theresa, you wouldn't be feeling guilty about this right now. You wouldn't be trying to put yourself back together or care whether you hurt somebody else. You are a good guy. So don't let Theresa or anyone else convince you otherwise. And another thing--I'll tell you what, in a lot of ways, I think you paid for what you did. But listen, JJ, we've all done things we're not proud of. You just got to own up to it... and she'll respect you. Paige will respect you if that's the kind of girl you want in the long haul.
JJ: You're right. Okay.
JJ: Thank you.
Daniel: Yeah, I got something right?
Daniel: All right, good luck.
JJ: All right, I'll let you know how it goes, man.
Daniel: Let me know.
JJ: All right, thank you.
Daniel: Wow. All right. Nicole.
[Cell phone vibrates]
Daniel: Yes. All right. "I will be right there."
Aiden: Look, I know you think it's unethical to go after Howell, but he went after our venue first. And this guy is lying in wait, hoping that Germaine is gonna drop the ball, and she did. Okay, now it's up to us to get that ballroom back... for the good of the kids.
Hope: Yes, for the good of the kids of St. Luke's so they can learn important things, Aiden... like the ten commandments, family values, good citizenship. No, I would not feel terrific about committing fraud--
Aiden: Oh, hope I wouldn't call it fraud.
Hope: Really? And what would you call it, counselor, huh-- lying, cheating? Uh, how about noncriminal deceit? How about that? We're setting up a man-- no, I'm sorry. Correction on my part. You're setting up a man, making promises on behalf of a person you're impersonating.
Aiden: Look, we're talking about canceling a gambling event for the sake of our children's future, okay? Call me an ogre.
[Cell phone ringing]
Aiden: Oh, look here. An email from Howell.
Hope: What's it say?
Aiden: Well, it says that... "I know what you're up to, and it's not gonna work, loser."
Aiden: Oh, he's such a jerk.
Hope: Oh, yeah?
Hope: What makes him a jerk... that he figured out what you were up to?
Aiden: Yeah, that's why he's a jerk. That's exactly why he's a jerk, and I'm not gonna let him get away with that.
Hope: [Laughs] Come on, it's funny. It's funny. Laugh. Ha ha. [Laughs]
Brady: Listen, I'm glad I stayed.
Theresa: Me too.
Brady: But now...
Theresa: No, don't say it.
Brady: I-I got to go.
Theresa: All right, well, do you think you could let yourself off work before 9:00? Maybe I could see you tonight?
Brady: I have a lot on my plate. But I think I can call you.
Theresa: [Chuckles] Great.
Brady: Okay. Have a good day, okay?
Theresa: Yeah, you too.
Brady: See you.
Paige: I really like JJ, but on our date last night, something really upset him. I-I'm pretty sure it wasn't me, since we barely talked. I-I tried to get him to tell me what was wrong.
Jennifer: Right, but he wouldn't say anything.
Paige: So I just walked out.
Jennifer: Yeah. I so appreciate you being honest with me. And I probably need to be very honest with you. JJ has had a really hard couple of years. You know, he lost his dad, and he had to move back to Salem. So he's trying to figure it out, you know, who he is, what-- what matters to him, what's right, what's wrong, who he is, who he can trust.
Paige: Yeah, I understand.
Jennifer: I'm glad you do. And, honey, if you do understand, please, just give him the time that he needs to open up. And if that's not something that you can do right now, that's okay too. Maybe you can just focus on some other friends.
Paige: Got it. Uh, thanks for the tea.
Jennifer: Oh, you're welcome. Listen, honey, I-I hope that you know this... is not about you.
Paige: Thanks again.
JJ: Hey, Paige. What are you doing here?
Paige: I came to see you.
JJ: Do you have a few minutes to, uh, take a walk with me?
Eric: I didn't expect a hearty congratulations... but aren't you gonna say anything?
Marlena: I know you have feelings for Nicole. After what happened at the cabin, I-- I guess I'm not surprised that you would want to rush into marriage.
Eric: We're not rushing. Nicole and I fell in love a lifetime ago.
Marlena: It was a lifetime ago.
Eric: And when you think you're gonna die in each other's arms, it kind of reminds you that life doesn't give you any time to waste.
Marlena: You don't have to convince me that you have feelings for Nicole. But what I'd like us to talk about--
Eric: I'm not gonna listen to you to running her down, mom. I don't exactly expect you to welcome her with open arms, but you are going to have to learn to accept it.
Marlena: I'm not talking about her. I'm talking about you.
Eric: What about me?
Marlena: A year ago, you told me that you had found your vocation... that your love for the church was the greatest love you'd ever known. And now I feel a little bit like you might be abandoning it.
Eric: You act like this is Nicole's fault. I didn't turn my back on the church.
Marlena: I know you didn't. I'm so sorry about that. And, honey, all I want is your happiness.
Eric: I understand that.
Marlena: I'd like you to take time to be certain... certain that your calling to the consecrated life really is over... before you make a lifelong commitment to Nicole.
Nicole: Hey. Thanks for coming so fast. Oh. Wow. What happened to your lip?
Daniel: Uh, I'm fine. I'm fine.
Nicole: You don't look fine. Poor baby.
Daniel: Okay, Nicole...
Nicole: No, seriously, what happened? Did you fall? Did you run into something?
Daniel: Yeah, I-I fell. So you wanted to show me something?
Nicole: Uh, yeah, yeah. This. Can you believe Brady got back with that little enabler?
Daniel: Uh, no, I can't, but I have been texting you all morning--
Nicole: She won't give up until she has bled Brady dry.
Daniel: All right, I really don't want to talk about Brady right now.
Nicole: Well, this can't wait. I mean, if he goes back to using-- Daniel, do you even care?
Daniel: No, I do care about Brady and Eric and you. Nicole... how did Eric take the news when you told him last night? You haven't told him, have you? The best part of coming together is how delicious it can be.
JJ: Do you remember when I told you about that girl I got involved with that was really bad news?
Paige: The one who set up Dr. Jonas?
JJ: That's the one. See, last night when you were on the phone, um, while I was getting us drinks, I ran into her.
Paige: That's why you needed to get out of there in such a hurry. [Sighs] Why didn't you just tell me?
JJ: It's just--I don't know. A-after seeing her, it made me think of all the awful stuff that I've done since I've been back in Salem. And I don't know. It made me just-- it made me think that maybe I wasn't good enough for you.
Paige: Maybe you should let me be the one to decide that.
Brady: [Sighs] [Sighs]
Brady: Oh. What do you want?
John: I didn't like the way we left things, kid.
Brady: No, you didn't.
John: No, I didn't, so I just... I wanted to look you right in the eye, and I wanted--
Brady: Dad, dad! Come on! I don't know how to make this any clearer. I don't want to talk to you. I don't want to see you. I don't want you to say you're sorry anymore. What?
John: You've been drinking.
John: Damn, kid! Come on, it's not even 10:00 A.M.
Hope: We still don't have a venue. And since approaching Mr. Howell will be harder than ever now, well, I just think we should focus all of our energies on finding another place.
Aiden: Another place? But what about tradition, superstition?
Hope: What else can we do?
Aiden: Well, there's always something else we can do.
Hope: You're stubborn.
Hope: Okay. Look, just promise me something, okay? If you decide to, uh, storm the ballroom or stage a revolution or some crazy thing like that, just run it by me first, okay?
Aiden: [Chuckles] Maybe.
Aiden: All right, well, I better get back to work, and I'll let you do the same.
Hope: Thanks for the distraction. It was nice.
Hope: Oh, hey.
Jennifer: Time for a caffeine break.
Hope: Oh, my gosh. You're the best cousin in the world. Thank you, sweetheart. I already knew that, though.
Jennifer: Hey, how's it going?
Hope: Um, well, not really going.
Jennifer: Yeah, Abigail told me that you had to talk to her about nick's death.
Jennifer: I am so sorry that you even have to take this case, because roman must understand that nick was our cousin--
Hope: I've already let him down once. I'm determined to find out who did this to him.
Jennifer: I know that, and you will.
Hope: Are you okay?
Hope: Are you okay?
Jennifer: Yes, I'm fine. I came here to check on you. You don't need to be bothered with anything else.
Hope: It wouldn't be a bother, not in the least. Spill it... now.
Jennifer: Okay. It's Nicole.
Eric: No, I don't understand. I don't understand why God never allowed me to be publicly exonerated. The reality is I probably never will be.
Marlena: We don't know that. We don't know they won't find some way--
Eric: Mom, I can't keep dwelling on it. I don't know why things--they turned out the way they did. But I think in some way, it was God's will that brought me back to Nicole.
Nicole: You're right. I... I haven't told Eric the truth yet.
Eric: I understand why this is so hard... and that you're scared, Nicole. But this can't go on. You have to tell him now-- yesterday. You promised me.
Nicole: I know. I did. I tried. I really did. It's just that one thing led to another and-- Daniel, we... we made love. And Eric said he wanted to wait until we're married, but now...
Daniel: And now you have made this so much worse.
Nicole: Not if we stay together.
Daniel: That will be Eric's decision to make. I mean, maybe he'll understand why you did what you did, but in order for that to happen, he needs to know the whole story.
Nicole: How could he understand? Why should he have to? Daniel, why are you trying to ruin things for us?
Daniel: Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. No, we've been through this. This is not my fault.
Nicole: I know. I know. It's just if you could--
Daniel: Just let it go? Turn a blind eye? How can you ask me to do that?
Nicole: 'Cause... it won't do any good. Please, Daniel, if you... if you've ever loved or cared about me, please... please, you can't... you can't punish me this way.
You did it!
Brady: Look, Dad, read my lips, okay? What I'm doing at 10:00 A.M. Or any other time during the day is my business.
John: I'm so sorry, son. I'm not judging.
Brady: Yeah, you are judging. You are judging me, okay? Just like I'm judging you as a not-so-great dad. Do me a favor. Next time you feel the inclination to check up on me, you want to see how I'm doing, show me that you care, show me that you love me by staying at home and the hell away from me. Great to see you. [Sniffs]
[Cell phone ringing]
Paige: JJ, aren't you gonna say anything?
JJ: I guess it should be your choice who you hang out with.
Paige: Good. Because I like hanging out with you, but I want you to feel like you can talk to me about whatever... the stuff that matters, 'cause otherwise, it's just, well, superficial.
JJ: There's nothing I hate more than superficial.
Paige: That makes two of us.
Hope: What about Nicole?
Jennifer: She has done something to upset Daniel.
Jennifer: I don't know. I wish I did.
Hope: Have you talked to Daniel about it?
Jennifer: He just keeps pushing me away and tells me he'll fill me in later.
Hope: I'm sure he will.
Jennifer: Yeah. And you know that I trust Daniel.
Hope: Yeah, of course, but you don't trust Nicole. I mean, who would?
Jennifer: But she's my friend.
Hope: She is?
Jennifer: Yes. But I also know how she operates, and when Daniel and I were apart, the two of them got really close.
Hope: Yeah, trying to clear Eric's name, right?
Jennifer: Yes, and I know that Daniel wants to see the best in Nicole, and I admire him for that--I do.
Jennifer: But I also know that he would do anything to help her. So I just have this sick feeling that she's gonna ask him to do something that I know he's going to regret.
Daniel: Nicole, you know... I care about you very much. And that's why I think it is so important for you to tell Eric the truth.
Nicole: And if I won't?
Daniel: Well, you know the answer to that. If you won't do it... I will.
