Episode #12170 ~ Sami worries Justin has sealed her fate; JJ goes home; Abigail turns to Cameron for comfort.
Provided By Suzanne
Marge: Someone deposited a hundred thousand dollars into my son's bank account. But it wasn't my husband, I swear!
Justin: That's what you'd like to believe, Mrs. Bernardi. But the fact is, everything your husband made legitimately has been accounted for. If Joseph Bernardi wasn't accepting money, large sums of money, from an outside source, where did that hundred thousand dollars come from?
Kayla: Oh, hi, Chad. How are you doing?
Chad: I--hi, I'm fine. Thanks for asking.
Kayla: Oh, good. And, uh, you and my niece? Everything's going all right?
Chad: Abigail and I, we're doing great.
Kayla: I'm so glad. And I hope that, um...
Chad: What? You hope what?
Kayla: Well, I hope that you continue doing well. And, um, that you're feeling okay.
Chad: I'm feeling fine.
Chad: Oh, my God. Cameron told you, didn't he? He told you about my condition? That son of a bitch.
Abigail: Hey, mom. How did things go with JJ after I left?
Jennifer: Not so well.
Abigail: I'm so sorry, mom. I don't understand why he's acting like this. Is he upstairs?
Jennifer: No, he's gone.
Abigail: Gone? Where? Did he go to meet with uncle Justin?
Jennifer: No, Abigail. Your brother's left home, and I'm afraid it might be for good.
JJ: [Sighs] I'm glad I gave you this to hold onto. I just--I didn't think I'd need it so soon.
Bev: Are you really not going home again? Won't your mom, like, freak out on you?
JJ: I'm 18. I'm an adult.
Hope: True, you are. Hey, guys. So when are you gonna start acting like one?
Marge: My--my throat's really dry. Can I have some water, please?
Judge Sims: Bailiff, can you get the witness some water, please?
Sami: This could be it. Check out the jury.
EJ: Well, they clearly want to know where the money came from.
Sami: They have to realize that Bernardi was a dirty cop.
Justin: Are you ready to answer the question, Mrs. Bernardi?
Marge: Yes, I-I think. But...
Justin: Let me repeat the question. Do you have any idea where your husband, detective Joseph Bernardi, could have gotten his hands on a hundred thousand dollars?
Jennifer: I just kept telling him that there needed to be new ground rules, because he kept lying to me over and over again, and I couldn't trust him anymore.
Abigail: So he just left?
Jennifer: Yeah, because he said he couldn't live by my rules anymore.
Abigail: Mom, what is he thinking? Where's he gonna stay?
Jennifer: Honey, I don't know. But I'm sure he'll come back here once he just cools off. And once he starts thinking rationally, he's gonna see...
Abigail: Rationally? Mom, JJ hasn't been thinking rationally for a long time now. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been dealing drugs. I mean, God, mom, what happens if he gets into something worse while he's away?
Jennifer: He's still facing misdemeanor charges. I hope that he has enough sense not to risk getting in trouble again.
Abigail: Because he's been so sensible so far?
Jennifer: Honey, I am being tough this time.
Jennifer: Yeah. I have called in backup to set him straight.
JJ: What's up?
Hope: Your mom called. She, uh, told me about the fight you two had.
JJ: Right, and I bet she wanted you to drag me back home.
Hope: Uh, no, actually she didn't. Hey, you're 18 now. Nobody can force you to do anything you don't wanna do, right?
JJ: Then what?
Hope: Well, I was hoping that I could get you to understand how incredibly hurtful this is to your mom. She doesn't deserve this. JJ, she loves you so much. She's always been there for you. She's always supported you. Always. Hey. What? No comment?
JJ: It's not about hurting my mom, it's just... I need some space, you know?
Hope: Okay, fine. Hey, as I said, nobody can force you to do anything you don't want to do, right?
JJ: I just need a little time to cool off.
Hope: Okay. And where do you plan on, uh, "cooling off," as you call it?
JJ: Actually, [Stammers] I was thinking that maybe I can crash at your place with you and Ciara. Just for a couple of days. What do you think?
Justin: Your honor, can you instruct the witness again to answer my question?
Marge: You're trying to make it look like Joe was a dirty cop, and he wasn't. You know it. I know it. Everybody who's ever known him knows it! He was a hero! And those two over there have done nothing...
Justin: Your honor.
Judge Sims: Mrs. Bernardi.
Marge: He's a DiMera! He's a DiMera, and his father's the biggest crook in town, and has been for years!
Marge: It's true! Everyone in this room knows that it's true!
Judge Sims: Mrs. Bernardi. You will refrain from making outbursts in my court and answer Mr. Kiriakis's question. Or I will have no choice but to have you remanded to custody.
Justin: Mrs. Bernardi. Do you know where the money in your son's bank account came from?
Marge: You can't do this.
Justin: [Forcefully] I repeat, do you know where the money--
Marge: No, I don't know where the money came from! But it wasn't my husband's! He did not put it there. He was a cop, and he was clean. And I didn't just have a hundred thousand dollars lying around.
Justin: Well, then how do you account for it?
Marge: Someone else must have put the money there. But it wasn't Joe. It was not Joe.
Justin: Who else had access to your account besides you, your husband, and your son.
Marge: [Whispering] No one.
Justin: No one?
Marge: No one! But he is a DiMera! And they can get away with whatever they want! Somehow they got access to that account.
Justin: Mrs. Bernardi, I know you'd like to believe that.
Marge: I do believe it, because it is the only explanation that makes any sense! The doctor hoysyselin it.
Kayla: Chad, you need to calm down and listen to me.
Cha no, you need to listen to me. Cameron had no right discussing my illness with you, okay? It's a breach of doctor-patient confidentiality, and I may just have that bastard sued.
Kayla: You are completely overreacting. I was on duty the day that he got your ct scan results. I consulted on your case. I am his chief of staff. We do that every day, all day.
Chad: Okay, okay. But there is no reason for you or Cameron to consult about me anymore, okay? I have a new doctor now.
Kayla: Yes, I know. And I know that you're not telling Cameron what the name of the new doctor is.
Chad: Because it's none of his business.
Kayla: Why wouldn't you want the doctor who diagnosed you to consult with your specialist?
Chad: Because Cameron is all up in my business, and I don't want him asking too many questions.
Kayla: He is concerned about you, and so am I.
Chad: Okay, well, there's no reason for you to be concerned about me anymore, all right? I am fine. And, yes, I have a brain tumor. But I also have the best doctor DiMera money can buy right now. I don't want anyone else to know about this.
Kayla: Not even Abigail?
Chad: Especially not Abigail.
Abigail: Okay, mom...what if this tough-love thing backfires? What if something really bad happens to JJ, and we never even see him again?
Jennifer: What are you--don't say that, Abigail!
Abigail: But, mom, it's possible! I lost my father. I don't wanna lose my brother too.
JJ: You won't even know that I'm there. And I know that Bo's out of town, so I could really help you out at the house, you know? And I don't--I don't eat a lot. Okay, yeah. [Laughs] That was a lie. But I'll try not to clean out your refrigerator, I promise.
JJ: And I would love to spend some more time with you and Ciara. She's just so unbelievably cute. What? You don't like the idea?
Hope: Oh, I...I would love to help you out.
JJ: All right.
Hope: But you need to go home. Oh, and before you get on the horn to all of the other Hortons and Johnsons in town and tell all of them that, oh, you'd like to get to know them better, and that you'll help out around the house, and that-- whatever else yolson gonna come up with, let me assure you, they'll react exactly as I have.
JJ: Mm, you mean my mom got a hold of them...
Hope: JJ, listen up. The charges against you are very serious. Do you not understand that? And as a cop, I have seen up close where that path can lead, and it's not warm and fuzzy. So stop being a jerk before you end up behind bars for the rest of your life. Okay? Okay? Hey, we're family. But I'm also a cop. And I'll be watching you. Actually, the entire force will be watching you.
Rory: Dude, I'm sorry, that was brutal.
[Cell phone rings]
JJ: I'm not coming home, Abigail.
Abigail: JJ, I need to talk to you in person.
JJ: Fine, but only you can come. No mom.
Judge Sims: Mrs. Bernardi. I need you to stop speculating and answer the questions that are asked of you. Mr. Kiriakis.
Justin: Nothing further, your honor.
Judge Sims: Ms. Trask?
Melinda: I have no further questions for this witness, your honor.
Judge Sims: You may step down, Mrs. Bernardi.
Marge: You have to believe me, please!
Judge Sims: Mrs. Bernardi.
Marge: Joe was a good man, and he was a clean cop!
Judge Sims: Bailiff, remove the witness immediately.
Marge: He's been set up! How can you do this to us! [Sobbing] He's dead. My husband's dead!
Judge Sims: Bailiff, move!
Marge: And you wanna make it worse for me and my little boy for the rest of our lives? She killed his father!
Judge Sims: Bailiff!
Marge: She killed his father!
Judge Sims: I can grant a 15-minute recess.
Justin: The defense would like to proceed if the court will allow.
Judge Sims: Call the prosecution's next witness, ms. Trask.
Melinda: The state calls Adrienne Kiriakis.
EJ: Did you know about this?
Justin: Well, I knew that she would be called, but I didn't think it would happen today. But Trask is nervous now that the money thing is out there.
Sami: God, I hated seeing her like that.
EJ: She had to find out that her husband was dirty sooner or later, and it's a lot better for us that it happened on the stand. Samantha, we have nothing to regret or feel guilty about. Nothing.
Melinda: Please state your name for the court.
Adrienne: Adrienne Kiriakis.
Melinda: And you are married to the defendant's attorney?
Melinda: You are the person who provided the video of ms. Brady attacking detective Bernardi prior to his death, isn't that right?
Adrienne: Yes, I felt--
Melinda: You were also the person who provided police with the tip to look into the bank account of the deceased's son, timothy Bernardi, were you not?
Adrienne: Yes, I--
Melinda: Can you tell the court, Mrs. Kiriakis, how you came to know that there was over $100,000 in Joe Bernardi's son's bank account?
EJ: What can you do?
Justin: Nothing yet.
Adrienne: I ran into Marge and her son Timmy as they were coming out of the bank. And Timmy dropped his passbook, and I bent down to help him pick it up, and I noticed the balance on the receipt.
Melinda: Ah. What an extraordinary coincidence, yes?
Justin: Objection, your honor.
Judge Sims: Sustained.
Melinda: So did you know that Mrs. Bernardi and her son were coming from the bank when you ran into them?
Melinda: So it was a coincidence.
Melinda: Hmm. And coincidentally Timmy just dropped his bank passbook at your feet, and you just happened to see the balance?
Adrienne: I believe that's what I just said, ms. Trask.
Melinda: You see nothing unusual about this?
Adrienne: I don't understand where you're going with this.
Melinda: Well, I'll explain it then. You see, Mrs. Kiriakis, it seems to me that a series of amazing coincidences befell you, the defense attorney's wife.
Justin: Objection. Leading the witness.
Judge Sims: Sustained. I think you've gone far enough, ms. Trask.
Melinda: No further questions, your honor.
Chad: All right, look. Abigail and I just got back together. I don't wanna ruin what we have by talking about depressing things, okay? I don't want her pity.
Kayla: You know, I understand that. But you wouldn't get that with Abigail. She is a kind and caring person, and she would help you through this.
Chad: Still, she's been through a lot. Losing her dad, now this stuff with her brother. This is the last thing she needs right now.
Kayla: It's reality. Life throws up some curves. And you know what? Keeping secrets, especially something as serious as this, it's really no way to start a relationship.
Chad: Okay. Well, I'm in treatment. And I'm gonna beat this damn thing. And then, when it's over, I'll have spared Abigail from ever having to worry about me.
Chad: Now, now, look, I-I care about her. A lot. I would never hurt her. So please trust me on this. And don't say anything to her, okay? Not a word.
Abigail: [Sighs] Can we talk alone?
Rory: Sure. [Grunts] We'll go get some smoothies or something. Do you want one?
Abigail: No, I'm good, thanks.
Bev: You are so not cool.
Rory: [Laughing] Whatever.
Abigail: JJ, please come home.
JJ: Wow. No warm up?
Abigail: Moving out is--is a mistake. This is crazy.
JJ: No, mom is crazy.
Abigail: Hey, don't talk like that. Mom is an amazing person. And she always will be. JJ, she loves you so much. Sure, she's angry, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't care about you. I was just with her. I'm telling you, I saw the look on her face. She's worried sick about you.
JJ: Well, maybe mom should have thought about that before she started playing prison guard.
Abigail: JJ, I need to tell you something, and I want you to hear me. When you were in London, I messed up pretty big. I...did some awful things that I am not proud of. But mom forgave me. And so did dad. Because I took responsibility, and we worked through it together. And you have to do the same thing. You can't just run away from your mistakes. Mom's being tough on you right now, because she feels like she has to. But I am telling you, JJ, that this is breaking her heart. And it's breaking mine too. So, please, just come home, and we can work on being a family. If not for mom, will you do it for me?
EJ: Thank you for your cooperation, Mrs. Kiriakis. I'll be cross-examining you myself today, due to the personal nature of your relationship with the defense attorney.
Adrienne: I understand.
EJ: Now you have previously stated that you provided the defense with the video showing ms. Brady attacking detective Bernardi?
EJ: And at the time that you presented this video to the state, had ms. Brady been charged with first degree murder?
Adrienne: The charges had already been dropped.
EJ: So it is when you presented this evidence to the prosecution that ms. Brady was charged for a second time?
Melinda: Objection. The prosecution stipulates--
EJ: The prosecution has made every attempt to portray the witness as colluding with the defense, when, in fact, we would not be here in this courtroom today, were it not for Mrs. Kiriakis. Is that not correct?
Judge Sims: You've both made your point regarding the witness. Anything more?
EJ: No more questions, your honor.
Judge Sims: You're dismissed. Your next witness, ms. Trask.
Melinda: The state calls Edward Craig.
EJ: Your honor, we have no record of this witness.
Melinda: Your honor, Edward Craig is with the FBI. And the defense opened themselves up to this questioning by accusing detective Bernardi of corruption and wrongdoing within the police department.
Judge Sims: I'll allow it.
Sami: [Whispering] What does that mean? What is going on?
Justin: I think we've been set up.
Abigail: JJ, I know that you are really upset. And I know that you're feeling betrayed, but--but hanging out with your loser friends isn't the answer.
JJ: At least my friends want me around. Mom, doesn't.
Abigail: God, JJ. What happened to you? When did you turn into this selfish, cold-hearted person?
JJ: That's it.
Abigail: N-no, no! It's not it. You're gonna listen to me, JJ, and you're gonna listen well. You got expelled from school for dealing drugs, and then you lied about it. And you came home, and you got arrested for doing the exact same thing. So you tell me, how did you think this would go? You thought that mom would just say, "welcome home, JJ. Can I make you a sandwich?"
JJ: I thought that she would try to understand me, ab--
Abigail: She did try, JJ! She tried for months and months and months. She tried with every cell of her being! But you did nothing but disrespect her! You lied to her face, JJ, over and over and over again. You made her life miserable! And instead of saying you were sorry and correcting your behavior, you just continued to do more dumb, destructive things!
JJ: You know what was dumb? Me agreeing to talk to you. [Grunts]
Abigail: You know what was even more dumb, JJ? Me thinking that I could actually get through to you! So go ahead, JJ. Run along! You go play with your juvenile friends who love you so much more than we do. I am officially giving up.
Abigail: You know what? I get it now, JJ. Let me tell you something. I loved dad a lot. Just as much as I love you! But dad...he was always making excuses for taking off, for abandoning his family. And now, JJ...you are doing the exact same thing. You are your father's son. You are just like him!
Hope: Shawn-Douglas turned out fine, and so will JJ.
Jennifer: Yeah. Do you think that I'm handling this whole thing right?
Hope: I do. I do.
Jennifer: 'Cause Abigail, you know, she thinks this whole, um...she's worried this tough-love thing is gonna backfire and...I mean, I'm just worried 'cause I haven't heard from him. So I'm thinking, you know, maybe I should just call him or... I don't know.
Bev: Here you go. Hot chocolate.
JJ: I thought you guys got smoothies.
Rory: Naw, too cold, man. What, you didn't notice?
Bev: Yeah, temperature dropped, like, 20 degrees. Looks like it's gonna rain too.
Melinda: Please state your name and occupation for the court, Mr. Craig.
Edward: Edward Craig. I'm a computer forensics expert for the federal bureau of investigation and head up that division.
Melinda: And your team was brought in to research the $100,000 deposit into timothy Bernardi's bank account, is that correct?
Melinda: Specifically, you were brought in to determine if there was computer fraud involved.
Edward: That's right.
Melinda: And what did you determine, Mr. Craig, after your investigation?
Edward: Our initial tests came back clean. Everything seemed to be above board. But we kept digging.
Melinda: Oh, why were you so persistent?
Edward: Because the people who had access to the account, had no idea how the money got there. And eventually, we found discrepancies in the bank's computer system.
Melinda: What kind of discrepancies?
Edward: It had been hacked. Prior to august 22nd.
Melinda: Of this year?
Edward: Yes, of this year. Prior to that date, the account had $23.47 in it.
Melinda: Once again, this is timothy Bernardi's bank account?
Melinda: Well--but I don't understand. Our records show regular transactions. Regular transactions-- deposits of large sums of money--on several occasions. The largest deposit coming the day before detective Bernardi was murdered.
Edward: Those deposits never happened.
Melinda: I'm sorry?
Edward: They never happened. The $100,000 was a lump-sum deposit on august 22nd.
Melinda: Well, that's very curious. Because detective Bernardi was killed on June 11th.
Jennifer: No. I'm not calling him. He has to know that I'm not gonna back down, that he has to follow my rules.
Hope: That's right. I agree with you.
Jennifer: It's just so hard, 'cause it's...times like this I miss Jack the most.
Hope: I know. It's very tough being a single parent and having to make all... the decisions on your own. But you have an incredible support group and so many people that love you. You know I love you.
Jennifer: [Laughs, sniffles]
Hope: And Maggie and Daniel and Abigail and--
Jennifer: It's so hard. I can't even...lean on Daniel right now, for so many reasons.
[Door opens] JJ.
[Light, running footfall]
Hope: Hey, uh, I gotta get going, okay? JJ, it's good to see you, honey.
Jennifer: I'm really glad you came back. Maybe we can sit down and talk this whole thing out.
JJ: I didn't come to talk. I came to get my jacket.
Chad: [Sighs] [Sighs]
Abigail: Chad, I-I'm sorry, I should have called first.
Chad: No, no. It--you're fine. Just unpacking some boxes. Come in.
Abigail: Wow, your place looks great.
Chad: You're upset?
Abigail: My brother.
Chad: Okay, um, they--they denied his bail?
Abigail: No, no. He's out. But he is making all kinds of stupid decisions and... Chad. He is tearing my family apart.
Chad: All right.
JJ: Oh, my God, mom. There's no drugs in there. Mom!
Jennifer: JJ, I think you know why your word isn't enough, okay?
JJ: Can I have my jacket? Or do you want me to freeze to death while I'm living on the street? [Sighs]
Jennifer: J--wait, JJ. I owe you an apology.
Melinda: So given the date of the deposit, it would have been impossible for detective Bernardi to put that money in his son's account. Since he was dead. Interestingly enough, the defendant was charged on July 22nd. And the deposit was made after that date.
Melinda: I have the date right, don't I?
Melinda: And were you able to determine the source of the funds?
Edward: My team traced it to an offshore account in the Cayman islands.
Melinda: The Caymans?
Melinda: In your experience, Mr. Craig, who generally has the ability to pull off such a complicated business transaction?
Edward: In my experience, the people who have the means to hire the very best hackers in the world.
Melinda: "The means."
Edward: Unlimited means.
Jennifer: I should have brought you home. After your father died. But, JJ, I honestly thought that it made sense not to disrupt your life. That was a really bad call on my part. You needed to be with me and Abigail. And then, once I got you home, I needed to pay more attention to you to--to see how you were doing.
JJ: What are you getting at, mom?
Jennifer: I just wanna own up to my mistakes, because there were a lot of them. And I'm just asking you to own up to yours.
JJ: [Scoffs] So--so nothing's different. You're still being impossible.
Chad: Look, um, I'm so sorry this stuff with your mom and your brother is so hard. I wish there was something I could do to help you.
Abigail: You are. You are helping. Just by...being here for me.
Abigail: I don't know what I would do without you, Chad DiMera.
Chad: Well, you don't have to worry about that. Because I would never leave you.
Jennifer: [Sighs] Here. [Sighs] [Sighs] What happened, JJ, to my sweet little boy? Did time apart really change you that much? 'Cause, you know, we used to be so close. We had this crazy bond, remember? And I think it was because you were my miracle baby. You know the doctors said you were never gonna make it. And I didn't believe them, because I knew...that this little baby inside me was so strong, and that he was gonna survive, and he was gonna grow up to be someone very, very special.
Jennifer: And I was right. I didn't give up on you then, and I am not gonna give up on you now. [Voice breaks] Because I am your mother. And I love you unconditionally, and that is never gonna change. And because I'm your mother, I'm not gonna let you destroy your life. So maybe you think I'm being unreasonable or maybe you think I'm being mean, but I'm trying to help you, JJ. Please, I am begging you, don't walk out that door. Please just stay here with me, and let's rebuild that bond that we had, okay? Let me help you get your life back on track, please.
Justin: Objection, your honor.
Judge Sims: Sustained. Ms. Trask?
Melinda: Nothing further, your honor.
Judge Sims: Mr. Kiriakis?
Justin: Uh, the defense has no questions at this time. But we do reserve the right to call this witness back to testify.
Judge Sims: Witness is dismissed for now. [Clears throat] Seems like a good time to recess for lunch. One hour. [Bangs gavel]
Bailiff: All rise.
Justin: [Clears throat] I need a minute to think about this.
Sami: It's over, isn't it? EJ, it's...it's over. I'm--I'm going to go to prison. For the rest of my life. And the kids, they're--they're gonna...
EJ: Samantha, no, we just-- we cannot give up hope, okay? I--listen. I promise you.
Sami: EJ. No more promises. I know that you've done everything that you can for me.
EJ: And it backfired. I'm so sorry.
Sami: I know. I know you are. And I understand why you did what you did.
Guard: I need to take you back to your cell now, ms. Brady.
EJ: Is it as bad as we think?
Justin: Oh, yeah. We are royally screwed. I put Marge Bernardi through hell on the witness stand. And now the jury believes the whole thing was a setup. They hate me. They hate you. But much worse...they hate Sami.
EJ: Look, Justin. We haven't even presented our case yet.
Justin: [Hits briefcase] My case? EJ, I have character witnesses. And en Melinda gets them all to admit how many times Sami has lied to them, they'll do more harm than good. We have no evidence. We have no proof. All we have is some--something that looks like a complete frame-up executed by you to keep your fiancée out of prison! The only thing that's gonna save Sami is a miracle.
JJ: I'm not interested in your fixing me, just-- I don't need your help. I just want you to leave me the hell alone.
[Door opens, shuts]
Kayla: Hey, Sami.
Sami: Hey, aunt Kayla! Hi.
Kayla: I, um--I brought you a good luck charm from your grandmother.
Sami: Oh! That is so sweet of her. Tell her thank you for me.
Kayla: I'll do that.
Sami: I'm glad it's a closed trial. I would hate for grand.... for all of you, to have to sit through this.
Kayla: Was today really bad?
Sami: I can't pretend anymore. I'm going to prison for the rest of my life.
Melinda: It's a slam dunk.
No way out for Sami Brady.
Melinda: Mr. DiMera.
EJ: A word in private, ms. Trask.
Melinda: What can I do for you, counselor?
EJ: Well, I'm here to talk about what I can do for you.
EJ: I know how much you want to put my father and myself behind bars so...I'm here to give you the opportunity to do just that.
