Kristen: Oh...shoot.

Brady: What? You know, you've never looked at your watch and said, "Brady, we got plenty of time to kill."

Kristen: Guess what. You're right.

Brady: What?

Kristen: Oh, I just got to check on EJ and see what's happened with that continuance, you know?

Brady: Well, there's real life just smacking you in the face.

Kristen: Yeah, I know.

Brady: I wish there was something I could do for Sami, though, other than sit here and worry about it.

Kristen: Mm. Well, at least she knows that she has you and Eric in her corner.

Brady: Yeah.

Kristen: [Gasps] And speaking of corners, is Eric in ours?

Brady: Is Eric in our corner? What do you mean?

Kristen: What do you mean "what do you mean"? You were gonna tell Eric that we're engaged, remember? I've been waiting to hear what he had to say. Uh-oh.

Brady: Um...

Kristen: What happened?

Eric: God, why am I thinking about that dream now? What's going on?

[Knock at door]

Matt: Eric, is something wrong?

Eric: Yes, yes, yes, there is.

Sami: [Chuckles] Mm, that's my Sydney. She's never gonna be an artist. [Laughing] Okay, okay. [Exhales sharply] No tears. [Sighs] I can't cry right now. This is from EJ. [Sighs]

[Door opens]

Justin: [Sighs] EJ, I've been looking for you.

EJ: Shouldn't you be preparing our argument?

Justin: Listen to me. If you want me to fight this continuance, you better tell me what the hell you've done and tell me now.

Stefano: Salute, huh?

Cecily: Salute.

Stefano: Anyway, to tell you the truth--

[Cell phone rings]

Stefano: Ugh! Wait a minute. This--my telephone here... it drives me crazy. Yes? Well, well... that's interesting.

Theresa: [Sighs] So are we gonna party or what?

JJ: I can meet you after my class tomorrow. It's last day of summer school.

Theresa: Where are you, JJ?

Abigail: You want to tell me why you're here instead of at work?

Maxine: That's all I know. Jennifer found out someone was at the police station, and she took off out of here like a bat out of--

Daniel: Okay.

Maxine: I got to go.

[Pager ringing]

Maxine: Poor woman can't seem to catch a break.

Daniel: [Sighs]

Nicole: Maxine was talking about JJ, wasn't she? What'd he do now?

Jennifer: I feel like I don't even know you anymore. But the sad thing is, maybe I finally do.

JJ: Maybe.

Jennifer: You know, I wanted to believe you--every story, every excuse--but I think I'm just gonna have to face the truth that my son is a criminal and a liar. But you know what? It is. It is the end of the line for you.

JJ: Mom.

Jennifer: And you know what? You be quiet, 'cause you're gonna listen to me. I am so tired of listening to you. I don't believe one thing that comes out of your mouth, because everything that you have said to me since you came back here, every single word has been a lie.

Matt: Eric, what's wrong?

Eric: I wish I knew.

Matt: Tell me what happened.

Eric: I don't know. I was just looking at this hotel bill, and it triggered something about that trip, and... I don't remember most of it, but it's starting to come back stronger than ever. I mean, I was sick, and... maybe I was delirious.

Matt: But?

Eric: I'm consciously remembering now. I mean, it's just... [Sighs] I don't know. It's sort of out of the blue-- about that dream that I told you about with that woman.

Matt: Are you saying they're connected?

Kristen: So how bad was it when you told Eric we were engaged? I mean, I have to see him later this afternoon. So is it gonna be super awkward?

Brady: No, it won't be awkward. It wasn't great. It wasn't as bad as Nicole's reaction, I'll tell you that.

Kristen: Like that's hard to do.

Brady: It was what it was. I mean, the two of us are-- we're trying to establish our brotherly relationship, you know, and I don't want to screw it up again, like I did before.

Kristen: I don't want you to screw it up either.

Brady: Yeah, so that's why I kind of asked him for something.

Kristen: What?

Brady: I asked him if he would marry us. What do you think?

Kristen: Oh, no way in hell.

Daniel: Does "none of your business" mean anything?

Nicole: I am trying to be your friend, Daniel. That kid has caused you a boatload of trouble. And you want to know what ticks me off more, is every time he screws up, you end up paying.

Daniel: The one who ends up paying is Jennifer.

Nicole: Exactly. And all you want to do is back her up, and he does everything he can to keep it from happening. So what did he do now, hmm? Armed robbery, I'm sure.

Daniel: Okay, I don't know that JJ did anything.

Nicole: Then who else do you think Maxine was talking about?

Daniel: I have no idea. I can't just rush over there--

Nicole: And you can't just do nothing.

Daniel: And if I'm wrong...

Theresa: So who are you-- truant officer?

Abigail: Looks like you need one.

Theresa: [Scoffs] Look, not that it's any of your business, but it's not like I'm chained to your mommy's desk. I do get breaks, you know.

Abigail: Which translates to you did sneak out and don't want me to rat you out.

Lori: Oh, my God! I was here. I saw the whole thing.

Abigail: What whole thing?

Lori: You don't know? Your brother got arrested for dealing drugs.

Abigail: No. No! Oh, my God, JJ.

JJ: You're wrong. The stuff that I told you was not a lie.

Jennifer: Oh. Oh, so it's not your fault? You got roped into helping Rory deal drugs the same way you got roped into helping your roommate, right?

JJ: Mom, I didn't--

Jennifer: You didn't what? You didn't deal drugs? So now your headmaster is a liar? No, you were lying then, and you are lying right now. And I am telling you right now, this lying is gonna stop. And I don't know how, but it's going to stop. You've been dealing drugs since you came back home, haven't you? You--you did steal Cameron's prescription pad, and I believed you. You lied to me, and I believed you, and that is never gonna happen again. Do you understand me?

JJ: Mom, not here.

Jennifer: What? What? Not here? Are you kidding me? Are you worried because I'm yelling at you? You should be worried because you're gonna go to jail! And you're probably gonna have a criminal record. Did you have drugs in our house? Did you? Oh, dear God.

Kristen: I mean, honestly, what were you thinking asking Eric to marry us?

Brady: What are you talking about? Why not? Why not? We've been talking about how we want it to be different this time around, and I mean, let's--

Kristen: Okay, let's exchange vows while we're skydiving, okay? But not this, no.

Brady: Excuse me. I'm sorry. Did I hit a nerve or something?

Kristen: No, just call him, please.

Brady: Can we talk about this?

Kristen: There's nothing to talk about.

Brady: There's plenty to talk about--let me tell you. We can talk about the fact that we should do it seriously this time. Go through pre-cana, do it right, be in a church, take serious vows, show everyone how much we mean to one another. That--that sounds good to me.

Kristen: Brady, Brady... it's not gonna happen.

Eric: No... I don't think they're connected.

Matt: But you're upset by both the trip and the dream?

Eric: I know. You know, it's like both things are grabbing ahold of my mind, and it's getting stronger, not weaker.

Matt: Huh.

Eric: It's just making me crazy, and I can't figure out why.

Matt: I think I may be able to help you.

EJ: Anything that I have or have not done is none of your business.

Justin: My business is to defend Sami. So just tell me. Did you plant the money in Timmy Bernardi's bank account?

EJ: Do you really want to know the answer to that question, Justin? Samantha is innocent, and the deck is stacked against her. This trial represents our best opportunity.

Justin: All right, I'll fight the continuance. But like I said, this could come back to bite us big-time.

Sami: "My darling Samantha..."

EJ: "I started to tell you all of this in person, but sometimes it's better to express what one's feeling in writing. I've put the kids to bed. But I'm finding it hard to sleep without you next to me. When that happens, I usually end up coming downstairs and looking at you in that portrait of us, and then I miss you even more. The fact that we have finally found each other after all of these years is amazing. And I was so happy when it seemed that all that was gone, lost time was finally over. But now that you're not with me, it's just so incredibly wrong." "I want you to know--know--that I will do anything and everything it takes to be certain you don't suffer for having done absolutely nothing wrong. I will get you back to your children. I swear I will."

Sami: Oh, EJ. Guard! Um, guard! Excuse me! Do you, by chance, have another pencil? Thank you.

Daniel: It was JJ.

Nicole: Quelle surprise.

Daniel: He was caught selling drugs.

Nicole: That's what he had in his hand the other day. I knew it.

Daniel: The last time this happened, I went to see her-- I just... I just made it seem worse. It was worse. I'm not gonna--I'm not gonna go.

Nicole: Daniel, do you really think... Jennifer doesn't want you there? I would want you there. And I think I speak for all womankind.

Daniel: That's good to know.

Nicole: You need to be with her.

[Footsteps approaching]

Abigail: Daniel, is my mom here?

Daniel: Uh, honey, I--

Abigail: You know, don't you, about JJ? My mom knows?

Daniel: Yeah, she's--she's at the police station.

Abigail: Can you take me there? I don't think I should drive right now.

Daniel: Absolutely, sure. No. Yeah, come on, let's go.

Jennifer: Listen to me right now. That night that I had my book club and you showed up at the house out of nowhere and you were so worried about everyone that you made everyone take a taxi ride home, it wasn't because they had too much wine, was it? Was it?

JJ: Mom--

Jennifer: You put drugs in those doughnuts, didn't you?

JJ: Mom--

Jennifer: I cannot even believe that my son... that my baby would do something like that! Do you think that's funny? Do you think that's funny to do that to your family and your friends-- to violate people who love you?

JJ: Okay, mom, it... it wasn't on purpose. It was a mistake. It was a mistake.

Theresa: [Groans] I gave JJ money to buy pot. The cops have his phone now. If they connect the dots... [Sighs] And if I'm incriminated... okay, no. No, that's not gonna happen. I have to find out what's going on.

JJ: I know that it was horrible. But, mom, it was a mistake. I-I had to get rid of--

Jennifer: The drugs? You had to get rid of the drugs that you had in my home?

JJ: I was going to give the laced doughnuts to my friends.

Jennifer: Oh, so it was an act of charity, JJ?

JJ: Mom, I'm--I'm sorry. I'm really sorry.

Jennifer: No, you're not really sorry. You're sorry that you got caught... because that didn't stop you last time either, did it? Remember the--the other time that you were really, really sorry? You didn't stop lying then or dealing drugs then either, did you? How does that feel? How does that feel to just--to just make your mother look like such a fool? "Oh, no, mom, those shoes-- those are Rory's new shoes. They're not mine. And you know what? I want to go to the library, mom. I want to study." My God, JJ, you played me for a complete fool. I was a complete fool.

Brady: I don't understand this--this reaction of yours. I mean, is this a religious thing or something?

Kristen: No. But speaking of that, do you really think Eric's gonna let me get married in his church?

Brady: Don't worry about him, okay? Don't worry about him. I'll take care of him and St. Luke's. This could be fun.

Kristen: Fun?

Brady: Yeah. Come on, imagine you and I in a room talking openly about marriage. Heck, we might get to know each other in ways we haven't yet. It's not like we have any secrets from Eric.

Kristen: I'm not gonna do it.

Matt: I think the reason you're so upset about the dream is really simple. You're under a lot of stress. You were already overworked when you took on the school and the scholarship. And then there's your sister. I know how upsetting it must be to watch what's going on.

Eric: Yeah. It's not easy, yes. She's telling the truth about everything.

Matt: Well, then we have to count on our faith in God and the legal system.

Eric: I am. I-I really am. You know, it's just weird being a twin. I've always been able to handle things much better when it's been about me than my sister. And we're being compounded by the fact that so much has happened to my sister.

Matt: Are you saying she brought this on herself?

Eric: Actually, no. For the first time, I think she's an innocent victim who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Matt: With a gun.

Eric: Yeah. There's that.

Sami: Um, so you argued against the continuance, right?

Justin: Yes. It didn't take long. I stated our case. My sense is that we'll get an answer soon.

Sami: How was Trask?

Justin: Actually, she seemed a little nervous.

Sami: But that's good, don't you think? I mean, she seems like the type that doesn't get unnerved easily.

Justin: Yeah, well, I'd feel better if I wasn't so nervous myself.

Stefano: Hello, Elvis. [Clears throat] Well... I hear things are looking up for your fiancée.

Jennifer: It is like you are just driven to self-destruct. You get yourself kicked out of boarding school, and you lie about it. And I know that you set out to destroy Daniel's mp3 player, parker's train set, Daniel's car, and you lied about all of it. But do you want to know what really, really gets me? It's that you threw your father's memory in my face! Everything that your father and I have worked for, for what we wanted in our family, you just-- I can't even say the word for what you did to his memory! What happened to you?

JJ: That's what happened to me. Go on, go on over to him. Let him make you feel better. He's the only one you really care about. I can stay in jail. That's fine by me. I just want you to get out of my damn face!

EJ: I don't know what it is you think you know about Samantha's case, but I can assure you it's none of your business.

Stefano: Mm-hmm. Maybe. But, um, you know, even though there are a lot of people who think that I am retired, I mean, I get a lot of phone calls with information.

EJ: Do you?

Stefano: Mm.

EJ: Special at the early-bird dinner?

Stefano: [Chuckles] That's a good one. But you know what? The really good thing is that all the money was found in that dead police officer's son's little bank, you know? Now, any detective who was honest would never leave that kind of money in a child's bank, would he? Maybe, just maybe, that is Samantha's ticket to freedom.

EJ: No, Samantha's ticket to freedom, father, is that she's telling the truth.

Stefano: [Chuckles] Well, that's a little naive, now, don't you think? Okay, well, anyway, that's beside the point. The thing is this-- one other thing that bothers me is your demeanor. I don't want to hurt your feelings by this or anything. I hope you don't mind my saying it. But I watched you when you walked in the door. And I don't know. You walked like you had--were-- I don't know. Like a little... weak little puppy.

EJ: I just learned not to jump the gun.

Stefano: Oh, boy. If you had only learned that before you stabbed your father in the back.

Sami: Justin, what are you talking about? Why are you nervous?

Justin: Wrong word. [Chuckles] No, I just, uh-- I just hope that if this new evidence about the money in Timmy's account doesn't pan out that it doesn't end up hurting our case.

Sami: How could it hurt our case? The money proves that Bernardi was a dirty cop.

Justin: Sami, I shouldn't have said anything. Really, you need to stay focused. Forget I said it.

[Cell phone ringing]

Justin: Oh. Here's the judge. I got to go. Really, just forget I said anything, anything at all. Okay, bye.

Sami: [Scoffs] Yeah, sure. No problem, Justin. Nothing to be nervous about now. Obviously, you think that EJ planted that evidence. [Sighs]

Brady: You know, I knew this was gonna be a hard sell, but I had no idea you were gonna freak out the way you did.

Kristen: I didn't freak out.

Brady: Oh, you're right. It was a calm, considered response that you had.

Kristen: [Sighs] Okay, maybe I freaked out a little bit.

Brady: Yeah.

Kristen: You're right. We should be able to talk about everything and anything.

Brady: Yeah.

Kristen: So I'm gonna go talk to Eric about it, but, you know, just don't expect me to make any promises.

Brady: That sounds reasonable. All right.

Kristen: Okay.

Brady: By the way, the reason I want to do this is because I love you. I just love you.

Kristen: I just love you too.

Brady: Mm.

Jennifer: Oh, okay. Why don't you just add to the list "you're a coward"?

JJ: What?

Jennifer: You screw up seven ways from Sunday, and you want to blame everyone else. You don't even have the guts to say, "I did these things." No, all you say is, "my mom has a boyfriend. My dad died. I'm not to blame. I didn't do any of this."

JJ: Mom--

Jennifer: You know what? I will always love you... always. But I do not like you right now. And you know what? I'm getting you a lawyer, because as much as you want me out of your face, I don't think you want to go to jail. Why don't you ask Nick?

Okay, Mr. Deveraux, I'm gonna need your full attention.

Jennifer: Excuse me. His lawyer is not here yet.

It's just some paperwork, okay?

Jennifer: Yeah.

Lee: You're getting to be more and more like your father every day, but I don't think that even he was this stupid!

Abigail: Mom, should--should I call uncle Justin?

Jennifer: No. He's working on Sami's trial, but hope is sending someone down. I don't know what I'm gonna do. Your brother is in so much trouble, and I am so...

Abigail: Angry. Yes, mom, you should be.

Jennifer: I am so afraid he's gonna mouth off to one of these cops.

Abigail: No, he won't, mom. I'll--I'll talk to him. Like he'll listen to anyone.

Daniel: Can I, uh-- what can I do? Times almost up for sears biggest

Daniel: Hey, you'll get through this, you know. We'll get him out of here.

Jennifer: Daniel, you were so right about everything. I was so wrong.

Abigail: JJ, you listen to me. You better not give these cops any attitude.

Daniel: That's not what's important. You, uh, want me to call Justin?

Jennifer: No. There's a lawyer on the way. I am so sorry.

Daniel: No, it's okay. I mean, it may not feel like it, but maybe... maybe it had to happen. I mean, maybe now he'll let you help him. Maybe now you can get through to him.

Jennifer: Yeah, now that I am not a blind idiot.

Daniel: Now that you know the truth. Lies--they throw you. You're so honest, you can't process them. But you are so good with the truth.

Jennifer: Do you really think I can get him back?

Daniel: I know you can.

[Pager rings]

Jennifer: Oh. I'm sorry. You probably have an emergency. Someone needs you.

Daniel: Ah, it's surgery. Um, I could get a sub--

Jennifer: Okay, no, you go. No, you go. I mean, I know that I have you with me... even if you're not right here.

Daniel: I am.

EJ: Yes, I thought you were being very jovial in your defeat.

Stefano: Do I look like a defeated man to you? [Chuckles] I mean, I have the money I need. And I certainly don't have to worry about problems day to day because you took care of it for me.

EJ: Oh, happy to oblige.

Stefano: Yes, which gave me a new perspective.

EJ: What new perspective?

Stefano: Well, it seems that some of your critics feel that this situation that you've been going through with Samantha, right, has turned you into not the man that you always have been, see? But I said to them, "look... my son certainly is intelligent enough to deal with anything that comes his way, no matter what happens with Samantha one way or the other.

EJ: Oh, my fiancée's gonna be fine, father. She can beat these ridiculous charges. And then the real criminal will be brought to justice.

Stefano: Hmm. What a wonderful thought. I really, really wish that I could help you, but alas, my hands are tied.

EJ: I wish they were tied... behind your back on a gallows.

Theresa: Uh, so have you seen Jennifer around?

Maxine: She had to leave.

Theresa: Personal emergency?

Maxine: Don't know. Didn't ask.

Theresa: Okay.

Maxine: Oh, hey, I was just gonna page you. That surgery got postponed.

Daniel: Ugh, damn it.

Maxine: You went to the station house? I'm glad you went. I know you two are not together, but I'm glad you went.

Daniel: Uh, she's my friend. I just needed to make sure she's okay.

Maxine: Yeah. She's your friend. You just keep telling yourself that, okay?

Theresa: Hi. Um, I heard about JJ. So, uh, I was just wondering if there was anything I could do to help.

Daniel: You know, that's very, uh--that's very nice of you, but there's really not much anybody can do right now.

Theresa: So I guess my name didn't come up. Let's hope it stays like that.

Brady: You don't look like you're enjoying that coffee too much.

Nicole: It's not the coffee that sucks.

Brady: Would you like to talk about it?

Nicole: It's none of my business. Maybe I shouldn't.

Brady: That's not your standard operating procedure, Nicole. By the way, can I tell Kristen not to expect any more stealth attacks?

Nicole: [Scoffs]

Brady: Hmm?

Nicole: It wasn't an attack. It was a tête-à-tête. I was just chewing the fat with that catastrophic mistake you're about to marry.

Eric: I'm just tired of all this gnawing at me.

Matt: Our fallback position is still the same-- pray for guidance and maybe all will be revealed.

[Knock at door]

Kristen: Hi. Am I interrupting? Is this a bad time?

Matt: Oh, no, I was just about to leave.

Eric: Thanks again, father matt.

Matt: All right.

Eric: Please, come in. I have the actual last two applications right here. It's gonna be a tough call to make.

Kristen: Yep. Well, I think I know of a way to make it a whole lot easier.

Theresa: Hey, I heard your surgery got postponed. Maybe I could buy you a cup of coffee?

Daniel: Uh, no, no.

Theresa: You know, I'm a really good listener. I'm sure I could help you forget about the whole thing.

Daniel: Okay, did you hear where I said "no"? I thought I was pretty clear before.

Theresa: Oh. Oh, God. I just--I meant as friends. Seriously, I didn't mean anything else by it, I promise. Dr. Jonas, I really just want to help. I mean, there's got to be something I could do.

Daniel: [Exhales sharply]

Abigail: Don't be stupid, JJ. This isn't about Daniel. This is about you. This is about you selling drugs and getting caught doing it.

JJ: I don't expect you to understand anything. It's like you don't know me at all.

Abigail: You're right, JJ. I don't know you at all... but I really want my brother back.

Lee: First time, huh?

Jennifer: Excuse me.

Lee: I'm Rory's mother. I've been getting calls to come down since he was 13 years old. [Sighs] But I could tell it's your first time.

Jennifer: Uh, no--

Lee: You know, I guess 16, 17 times is the charm. I just told him I'm done with it. I'm done with him. I'm kicking him out as soon as it's humanly possible.

Jennifer: What?

Lee: And if you were smart, you'd do the right thing--save yourself a whole lot of grief, 'cause it may be the first time, but it sure as hell won't be the last. You can see in his eyes he's not gonna change.

Jennifer: No, no--

Lee: I see your old man hightailed it out of here. Washed his hands of it, right?

Jennifer: What?

Lee: His dad--he was here for, what, two minutes?

Jennifer: No. That--that was not JJ's father. JJ's father is dead. That--

Lee: Oh. Good rebound. Be careful, okay? That's a fine-looking man you've got there. This one-- he sent two guys I really liked packing. Id didn't matter we got along. You see, what they all don't want is domestic problems.

Jennifer: You know what? I really don't want to have this conversation right now, please.

Lee: You know, all I'm saying is save yourself the pain. He's good-looking. Your girl is real nice. Cut your losses and concentrate on the things that count, 'cause take it from me... that kid of yours ain't worth it.

Nicole: Brady, I care about you. And after what that woman did to you the first time around, I just--I can't stand to see you get hurt again.

Brady: Yeah, but that's-- that's definitely in the "none of your business" column.

Nicole: Hey, wait a minute. I'M... I'm serious when I say she's a mistake. And I will never accept that you two belong together. And I don't think Eric will either.

Kristen: Well, I happen to think that both final candidates deserve to be in the final slot.

Eric: What do you propose?

Kristen: I'm gonna give you more money, so they can both attend.

Eric: Wow.

Kristen: Yeah, I started thinking about that last kid that got so far, only to be rejected, you know. That kind of disappointment can really twist you up. I mean, twist one up.

Eric: Yeah. Well, I'm gonna make two great phone calls because of you. So I guess our business is done.

Kristen: Uh, no, not quite.

Daniel: There isn't anything you can do, Theresa. I appreciate your concern. I'm sure Jennifer is handling things. She's a very strong, resilient woman. Um... excuse me.

Theresa: [Scoffs] Well, that's your last chance, mister. You just blew the best thing you could ever have. [Sighing] Oh, well... God knows I've got other things to worry about. [Sighs] Even if JJ doesn't implicate me, I'm sure as hell never gonna see that money again. God, how am I gonna replace those funds?

[Keys clacking]

Theresa: Very interesting.

JJ: You and mom are just alike, you know that? You think things are so great, but they're not. We can never be what we were before dad died. I'll never be that same kid again, so stop trying to turn me into something that I'm not.

You ready? It's time to go.

JJ: Where?

To your cell.

Jennifer: I don't know how you can say that you're gonna give up on your son. I will never give up on my son.

Lee: Fine. Keep wringing your hands and gnashing your teeth, but it's not gonna change anything. He's going down, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Abigail: They're taking him away. What's going to happen to him, mom? To us?

Brady: You know, I think you're wrong about Eric, actually. As a matter of fact, Nicole, he may wind up... marrying Kristen and me.

Eric: There's something else that we need to talk about?

Kristen: Yes. This pre-cana thing.

Eric: Brady told you about that.

Kristen: Yeah. And I would really like it if you would tell him that you thought it over and that the answer's no.

Sami: Hey. Hey. Justin was here, and he said he got a text from the judge, so he's, um, gonna go find out if the judge has ruled on the continuance.

EJ: Good.

Sami: Is everything okay?

EJ: I ran into my father. It wasn't very pleasant.

Sami: Well, it never is.

EJ: Yeah.

Sami: EJ, I'm sorry. Your dad must be getting a thrill out of it, knowing that I'm in hell because he put me here.

EJ: Not for long. Let me tell you something-- he is going to pay for what he did.

Justin: Okay. Continuance was denied.

EJ: [Exhales]

Justin: The jury's been ordered back in. The prosecution has to start their case.

Sami: Good. When?

Justin: Today. Your trial starts today.
