Episode #12150 ~ Sami and Kate learn the truth behind Stefano's actions; Jennifer, JJ, and Abigail briefly come together over Jack's memory.
Provided By Suzanne
Daniel: [Sighs] Hey. Hey, buddy. Hey. Aww. You know what? You are such a smart man. Can I have a hug? Thank you, baby.
Abigail: It was nice, wasn't it, mom? What the governor said about dad?
JJ: He knew all about how brave he was that day.
Jennifer: Yeah, but I didn't need anyone to tell me, because I saw him.
Abigail: Mom, are you okay? Was this a mistake? Do you wish that you wouldn't have come?
Jennifer: No. Not at all. This private ceremony was really lovely. It just makes me--makes me think about that night. And, you know, I was really wondering how I was going to get through the next day, or how I was gonna get through the next week, and here we are--all of us--a year later, and we're together.
JJ: I'm just glad people remember him.
Jennifer: I know. But I'm really lucky, because I get to see your dad in your eyes every day. And I get to see him in your beautiful smile.
Rafe: You new here?
Jordan: I am, actually. My name is--
[Knocking at door]
EJ: You're going to give me a moment alone with Mr. Hernandez. Now.
Jordan: Mr. Hernandez?
Rafe: It's fine.
Jordan: Well, outside.
Rafe: So if you're thinking I've got amnesia, I don't. In fact, I remember everything about you.
EJ: Actually, uh, I came here to bury the hatchet, and not in your head. I was hoping that there's a chance you and I may be able to work together.
Sami: [Crying] What do you want?
Kate: We need to talk... about Stefano.
Sami: It's a funny thing, Kate. I really, um, don't want to talk to you about Stefano, or anything else, actually.
Kate: Don't be stupid. We both know that Stefano is the reason that you're here, the reason that you might spend the rest of your life behind bars.
Eric: Well, thank you very much. I was actually on my way to do that, but you're always one step ahead of me.
Nicole: I know you think that this is none of my business, but just how long is Kristen going to be here?
Eric: It should only be a few more days to interview prospective students.
Nicole: Just a few days, huh? You know, a few days is like 100 years when you have to stand shoulder to shoulder to that... word that I am not allowed to say on church property.
Eric: You know, he also cares about what's in your heart.
Nicole: Not swearing is as good as you're gonna get when you cheerfully tell me someone who I can't stand, and who has a merit badge in terrorizing people just because they rub her the wrong way--and I am one of those people--is gonna share my office.
Eric: Nicole, actually, this is my office, and I think you're being a bit egocentric. You know what? Honestly, I don't even think she's gonna notice you're here.
Nicole: Because I'm "the help"?
Eric: Because, for one thing, she's totally focused about helping those kids. And besides, today, she seems to
a bit distracted.
Kristen: Hi, Brady.
Brady: Hey, what are you-- what are you doing? What are you doing here?
Maggie: Oh, parker and Joanne are building a fort in the backyard.
Daniel: Do you think he's okay?
Daniel: Yeah, I don't know...
Maggie: Yeah, yeah.
Daniel: Maybe I'm just imagining it, but I had the feeling that he was worried before.
Maggie: About his dad?
Daniel: Well, actually, I think he misses Jennifer.
Maggie: Like you don't? Like you don't think you should be there for her, getting her through this day?
Daniel: I sent a text.
Maggie: Oh, a text. How personal. Don't you think that this day calls for just a little bit more than a text?
Daniel: No. I do not.
JJ: Um, who was-- who was that from, mom?
Nicole: I don't have to worry about Kristen because she's preoccupied? She gets preoccupied when she's ready to--to torture and kidnap someone.
Eric: Nicole, what are you--
Nicole: Let's see, hmm. I think she's done that to someone before. Who could that have been, hmm? Yes, your mother.
Eric: Do you really want me to start judging people by what they've done in the past?
Nicole: No, I want you to face the fact that your scholarship program is funded and administered by a sociopath. And if you don't wake up and see Kristen for who she really is, she could destroy both of us.
Kristen: I ran out of tissues. I know, it sounds ridiculous, but one of those, you know, little girls we were interviewing for the scholarship, she's newly orphaned. It pushed all my buttons. Couldn't stop crying. I'm better now.
Kristen: What are you doing here?
Brady: I'm getting a prescription for Caroline.
Kristen: You're so sweet.
Brady: Why are you lying to me?
Kristen: What do you mean?
Brady: I know that look in your eye. You're doing that thing again.
Kristen: What look are you talking about?
Brady: You're not telling the truth.
Kristen: There's a little girl, and it--she made me cry.
Brady: I'm sure she did, Kristen. Why are you lying to me?
Kristen: Okay, I'm lying to you... and you deserve to know the truth.
Kristen: Thank you.
Brady: Now you got your latte with your 1/4 inch of foam, and now we're ready to talk about-- uh, what was it? Oh, yeah, the truth.
Kristen: And I know that, in the past, that hasn't been my best event.
Brady: Well, let's just pick up where we left off, okay? We were at the drugstore, and you admitted to me that you were lying. And then we started talking about coffee, but we never really talked about what you were lying about.
Kristen: Okay, I wasn't exactly lying, per se. The little girl thing was true. But if I had been lying, it's only because you're lying to me.
Brady: Wow, that's not an evasion at all.
Kristen: Well, I am talking to the past master of evasion.
Brady: I thought we were talking about you lying to me.
Kristen: Okay. If it makes you feel any better, I know you're lying to yourself, because you're acting like today is a day like any other, right? When we both know that, today of all days, you're only thinking of one thing. Brady, that's Madison. I'm worried about you.
Maggie: You were texting Jennifer because you thought she needed your help today, but a text? I think that's a cop-out, Daniel, and you know it.
Daniel: You know what I do know? It's none of your business.
Maggie: Oh. Oh, well, I disagree. See, I think God's plan was that I found out that I was your mother, and that I would have carte blanche to interfere in your life to keep you from screwing it up. And he and I think that anything you do is my business.
Daniel: Well, you know what I think? I think you're trying to be disarming, but it's not really working.
Maggie: Oh, really?
Maggie: Well, the double whammy is that God also made me Jennifer's aunt and JJ's great-aunt, because all of you need to have something pointed out to you that's so obvious. The three of you are miserable, and you're all gonna stay miserable until you and Jennifer find out a way to help JJ. Look, this is hard, and it's not always easy to love someone, but it is always worth it to hang in there. There's gotta be a way to make this work.
Jennifer: Did you happen to see where Adrienne and Sonny went? 'Cause I want them to give you a ride home. I need to get over to the hospital.
Abigail: Wait, can I talk to you for a second, mom?
Jennifer: Yes, honey, of course.
JJ: Uh, I'll find Sonny.
Jennifer: What's going on, baby?
Abigail: I met with my lawyer, and he talked to the special prosecutor, and they said there's a small chance that I'll have to testify.
Abigail: I had to tell you that, mom, but I really think it's only a small possibility. I can't add anything to what they can get from Sonny or Chad.
Jennifer: Okay. Well, listen, the most important thing is, is that you're not facing criminal charges. And listen, if you have to testify, you just tell the truth. And--and that's all you can do. All right? And you just hope that uncle Justin can find a way to set Sami free.
Sami: I don't know, Kate. Stefano is sort of a big teddy bear at this point. With him, I'm probably just going to get life imprisonment. When you were railroading me, you were going for that needle in my arm.
Kate: Hasn't your mother, the shrink, ever talked to you about letting go, Sami?
Sami: Will you please just go away?
Kate: No. I'm going to help you.
Rafe: You want us to work together? You're a criminal. And I'm a cop. It seems rather unlikely.
EJ: You know full well that I'm talking about Samantha, who is being punished unfairly for saving your life. And I know that you feel that you owe it to her and to the children, so let's not pretend otherwise.
Rafe: You're right. Can't stand that Samantha's in jail because of me, because she saved my life. But I was unconscious when she fired that gun, so there's really not a lot I can do.
EJ: Well, that's not true. Now, I know you don't know what happened in that room, but you did know Joseph Bernardi. If we can work out who he really was and what he was really doing in that room, then we have a good shot at freeing Samantha, and you know that that is true.
Nicole: Hey, what are you doing here?
Daniel: Uh, I work here?
Nicole: Why aren't you with Jennifer? You know, there's the memorial at the park today.
Daniel: Yeah, well, that's for family.
Nicole: Okay, you should be there for her after, you know, to--to help pull herself together.
Daniel: Okay, since when did you get all concerned about Jennifer?
Nicole: Well, something happened at the book club. Very weird, but good.
Daniel: Okay, that's weird, good, I guess. But today is really the day I need to keep my distance.
Nicole: Got it.
Nicole: Because that punk son of hers is still screwing everything up for you guys, right?
Jennifer: Hey there. I just wanted to tell you that you conducted yourself in a way today that would have made your father very proud of you.
JJ: Thank you for saying that.
Jennifer: No, you don't have to thank me, because it's true. I'm really proud of you. So I'll see you, okay? Love you. Bye, honey.
Abigail: Bye, mom.
JJ: Do you, uh-- do you think she's gonna be all right?
Abigail: Yeah. She's tougher than she looks.
JJ: Thank you.
JJ: Uh, today was rough, abs. And I-I realize that it was nothing compared to when it really happened. And I saw you talking to mom, and I-I know that you helped her through it.
Abigail: It pretty much felt like she was getting me through it.
JJ: I should have been here. I should've.
Abigail: JJ, I think it was actually nice for mom to feel like you were sort of protected from it, to be honest.
JJ: That's a--that's a good way to put that I was scared to come back. You know, I-I don't know what you have going on, but if I can do anything...
Abigail: It's just good that you're here.
JJ: You almost sounded like you meant that.
Abigail: I did mean that, stupid. Now let's go find aunt Adrienne and Sonny and get the hell out of here.
JJ: Absolutely, yeah.
Abigail: Come on.
Brady: I guess I could have done without having a memorial service on the very day I was supposed to marry Madison, yeah.
Kristen: You loved her.
Brady: I did love her. And I hate memorial services, and I hate this day, and I hate--I hate thinking about losing her, and I hate talking about it.
Kristen: Okay. Well, you told me how you feel, and now you want to move on, right?
Brady: Do you know why men watch sports? They watch sports so they don't have to talk about their feelings.
Kristen: [Laughs] Brady. Do you know what the best thing is about, um, getting back together with you?
Kristen: Is that now I just get to enjoy how much I actually like you.
Brady: Don't use this against me later, okay? I'm glad I told you how I felt. I never want to do it again. All right?
Brady: Come here. I gotta go.
Brady: See you tonight. Hey, listen, new rule. New rule. No lies, no evasions. Right? All right.
Kristen: No, not right. [Sighs]
Sami: Is this the part where you bring me a nice, big, shiny, red apple?
Kate: Okay, um... like, I so need you right now not to be you, all right? Which means don't write me off, don't fly off the handle when I say that--
Sami: What? What? Say what, Kate?
Kate: When I say that we need to find out what Stefano really did, what he's doing now. We cannot take him at face value.
Sami: What are you talking about?
Kate: What if we're wrong about him?
Kate: Just-- just hear me out. Okay. He swore to me on the DiMera name that he did not send Bernardi to kill Rafe.
Sami: Oh, he did? Well, I'm so glad you're telling me, because Stefano is totally George Washington. He never tells a lie.
Kate: Can we focus? Can we just focus here? He didn't have to invoke that whole DiMera honor, the honor of the name crap. He didn't have to do that. All right? But he believes it. You might think it's bull. I know that I think it is. But he doesn't. So he wouldn't say that and then lie. I think he was telling the truth.
EJ: I want you to dredge up every case you two worked on, every conversation you ever--
Rafe: You don't think that I haven't done that already?
Rafe: I'll tell you something "and," I haven't thought about anything else since I've been in here. "And" nothing, okay? If I had, I would've taken it to the authorities.
EJ: Actually, I didn't expect you to come up with anything.
Rafe: Okay. Then why the hell are you here?
EJ: What if you were able to, uh, reflect back on what happened, and then maybe you were able to recall that Bernardi would stop at a bank or a safety deposit box on occasion when you were on duty together.
Rafe: All right. And if I was able to do something like that?
EJ: Well, then I would be able to ensure that hope found something.
EJ: See, Rafe, this could be the beginning of a rather beautiful friendship.
EJ: One more thing that you may wish to consider is that someone who would slice the throat of a comatose man is not decent, Rafe.
Rafe: Really? I always thought you and your dad were down with stuff like that.
EJ: We are many things, but what we are not are hypocrites. You're not going to see us getting commendations or medals. We're not going to get a hero's burial. The mayor's eulogy of Bernardi make him sound like a bloody saint. And Caroline and Roman? They get to open the newspapers and see that their daughter is a cop killer. And I cannot begin to tell you what the children are saying to Johnny and Allie. Tell me we should not do whatever it takes to resolve this.
Rafe: I can see that you're desperate to help Sami, desperate enough to ask for my help. Which is why I, as an officer of the court, am going to pretend that you, also an officer of the court, did not just attempt to solicit my help in planting false evidence.
EJ: She is innocent.
Rafe: I know, but that does not mean this is--
EJ: The only crime that she committed was saving your sorry life.
Kate: Don't talk, okay?
Kate: Just think. I want you to think about what Stefano's done to me. He married me to humiliate me. He dumped me to humiliate me. And still, he thinks he owns me. So I am not telling you that I believe him so you will think he's a swell guy, okay? He didn't need to--to bring out the DiMera oath. And everything he does, he does for a purpose. So I think the man is playing a game, a game that he doesn't want us to know the rules to. So if you say that you don't want to listen to me 'cause you don't want to hear what I have to say, then you are acting like the stupid chump he already thinks you are.
Sami: [Scoffs] Kate, you don't care if I live or die...
Kate: Oh, come on.
Sami: And I know it.
Kate: Sami, come on. Really? You're will and Allie's mother, unfortunately. But also, I didn't think that I could loathe Stefano even more than I already do.
Sami: And I thought you two could really make a go of it.
Kate: Something's missing here, Sami, and we need to figure out what it is.
[Knocking at door]
Eric: Listen, mom, I, uh-- I-I know you're upset. Mom, don't hang up... on me.
Maggie: I can come back.
Eric: No need. The conversation was over. Guess there's a first time for everything. My mother's never hung up on me before.
Maggie: Well, your mom's under an incredible amount of stress. I'm sure she's very worried about Sami.
Eric: Yes. Yes, she is. But it was a pleasure to be the one to confirm to her that I'm going to be working with Kristen.
Maggie: I can imagine.
Eric: Yeah. If you don't want to get her started on me working with her, don't even bring up Kristen and Brady.
Jennifer: Oh, I'm so-- sorry.
EJ: You son of a bitch.
Rafe: I get that you want to help Sami.
EJ: You had no problem lying to keep me from my child.
Rafe: Yeah, well, this is a really bad plan.
EJ: She saved your life, and your conscience prevents you from lifting a finger to help her.
Rafe: Damn it, EJ, if the cops--who, by the way, aren't nearly as stupid as you think they are--figure out that you're planting evidence, it is gonna be nearly impossible to clear Sami. It's gonna look like you knew that she was guilty all along.
EJ: Not if you corroborate the evidence.
Rafe: Yeah, and by the way, also stupid to be yelling your plan in a hospital, where people can hear you.
EJ: You're such a smug, sanctimonious-- you know, I blame myself, because I should have known that asking you for any help would be a complete waste of my time.
Kate: Okay. So the thing that makes Stefano so dangerous is not only that he plans meticulously, but that if something happens that he didn't plan, he can just pivot on a dime.
Sami: Well, he certainly didn't plan for me to be in that bathroom with a gun in my hand.
Kate: Exactly, and he took that ball and he ran with it. Which is why I want to go back. I want you to-- I want you to tell me everything that happened.
Sami: Kate, I have been over and over this.
Kate: Oh, how boring. Well, have a nice life in prison, then.
Sami: Okay, whatever. All right.
Kate: Okay. Um, the cot--the cot can be Rafe's bed. You're Bernardi. Stand where he stood. I'll be you. I mean, this is, like, a similar distance between Rafe's bed and the bathroom door, right?
Sami: So we're just gonna play charades now?
Kate: You know, why don't you do what I say, and then you can eat your chipped beef in peace, okay?
Sami: [Clears throat] Okay.
Kate: So... now, when you shot him, you didn't--you didn't know it was Bernardi, right?
Sami: No, no. He had his back to me. I couldn't see his face. All I saw was the razor that he had in his hand, and... I had a gun in my hand. I fired.
Kate: Are you sure it was a razor?
Sami: Yes, I'm sure it was a razor. I was hypnotized.
Kate: But why?
Sami: So that I would remember.
Kate: [Sighs] But why a razor? It just seems kind of messy, doesn't it?
Sami: Maybe it was his homage to Sweeney Todd.
Kate: Oh, r-- can we just focus on what we're doing, okay? Get the pillow. The pillow can be Rafe. Where--where was his head?
Sami: His head was, like, here, right? And here's his body.
Kate: Right. And that's-- is that exactly the position that Bernardi was standing in?
Sami: Yeah, I mean, if I was gonna slit his throat, this is where I'd be.
Kate: No, that's not what I asked you. I asked you if that is exactly the position Bernardi was in.
Sami: Um... well, no, I mean, I guess he was more like here.
Sami: And another thing. He didn't just have the razor in this hand. In the other hand, he had the sheet.
Sami: I don't know, Kate. I didn't ask him.
Kate: Was the sheet up by Rafe's neck? I mean, do you think he was pulling it away to get to his throat?
Sami: I don't think so. I mean, he was hot. And that why I went to the bathroom, to get him a cool washcloth. I think that the sheet was more like in the center of his chest.
Kate: And he pulled it down?
Sami: And he was standing here.
Kate: You know, just-- I mean, that doesn't make sense if he was gonna slit his throat.
Sami: He didn't because I shot him. But if I hadn't been there, if I hadn't shot him... he had the razor here. The arc would have been like...
Both: Oh, my God.
JJ: Who are you texting?
Abigail: Daniel. I wanted to let him know about today.
JJ: What? What?
Abigail: JJ, I haven't given up on him and mom.
JJ: I can't believe you're talking about him, today of all days, Abigail.
Abigail: Okay, look, JJ. Mom needs him. So you need to just get over yourself and think about what's best for her.
Daniel: Look, I really don't want to talk about JJ. It's--it's complicated.
Nicole: I thought you liked complicated.
Nicole: All right, I'm sorry. Look, it's not complicated. It's simple. You know, that little twerp is ruining your life. And if I, of all people, think that you and Jennifer should be together, don't you think that's worth a fight?
Daniel: Um, no. No.
Nicole: Fine. Fine, then I will.
Daniel: No, you've already threatened to talk to Jennifer about him.
Nicole: Well, now I'm moving to talk to him directly, and when I see that little punk, I'm gonna put him in his place.
Daniel: Okay. I-I'm just gonna, um-- a little shot in the dark here, but I am thinking that you weren't in a great mood before we started talking about JJ. Is it something at work?
Nicole: Someone... who should be run over by a truck twice.
Daniel: Another wild guess. Um, Kristen.
Jennifer: Kristen, wait a minute. What is going on?
Kristen: I don't know.
Jennifer: Do you really think that you're pregnant?
Kristen: I can't be pregnant.
Jennifer: I mean, listen, I know that it's a shock, but why are you upset? You and Brady have always wanted to have a baby. Oh, my gosh. Brady isn't the father, is he?
Sami: I think I'm gonna be sick. That is so disgusting.
Kate: So Stefano. I wish I could take a razor to him.
Sami: We have to tell someone.
Kate: Really? What are we gonna tell them? Who's gonna believe us?
Sami: You're right. I'm sure that's what Stefano wanted, and I have a hard time believing it. So it doesn't change anything.
Kate: Sorry about that. I just needed to know why he was so insistent that I think he was telling the truth. [Scoffs] Oh, my God.
Kate: He probably-- he probably knew I wasn't gonna give up. He wanted me to know what he was trying to do.
Sami: Probably. Listen, Kate, I really need for you to go. I wasn't, um, in a very good place when you got here, and... well, this hasn't helped.
Kate: I am sorry, you know? I hope you can beat this. My God, that would have been a waste.
Rafe: No, seriously, did you think that being in a coma made me stupid?
EJ: I think that my opinion of your intelligence or, um, lack thereof, is irrelevant. I think that your tremendous ego is so bruised that you're willing to punish Samantha by having her spend the rest of her life in prison. Well, I hope you rot in this bed for just as long.
Rafe: All right, all right.
Maggie: Well... [Clears throat] I know you're a priest, but you're still a man. Because only a man would think that interacting with both Kristen and Nicole in such close quarters would really work out all that well.
Eric: Oh, ye of little faith.
Maggie: Oh, ye of great na´vetÚ.
Eric: No, Maggie, come on.
Eric: Since Nicole started working here, she has--she's-- she's changed so much. And Kristen, I mean, she's so interested in the scholarship fund, and the way she talks to those kids--I don't know, there's just a certain side of her that's almost maternal.
Kristen: Okay, so, when Brady and I were apart, I had a very brief affair with a man who was in a committed relationship. It was only this one time. And I thought Brady and I were over for good, Jenn.
Jennifer: Okay. Well, I mean, I--maybe Brady would understand that.
Kristen: No, because I told him that we were okay because I was faithful to him the entire time. And it got to be such a huge deal that I gave him my word. Do you get it now? If he found out that I was lying to him yet again, it really would be completely over for good.
Daniel: Vroom! Uh-oh.
Parker: [Screams playfully]
Daniel: I'm sorry, what are you saying?
Parker: [Laughs] Nothing!
Daniel: Nothing? I can't hear you.
Brady: Figured it out. I think that kid's upside down.
Daniel: Yes, well, it's very important in the development of the "kerflatzensheffen" that boys get held upside down...
Brady: The "kerflatzensheffen"?
Daniel: Yes, at least one time a day.
Brady: I will remember that, if Kristen and I ever...
Brady: A guy can dream, right?
Kristen: If I am pregnant, then--it's crazy. It--it's not Brady's.
Jennifer: All right, Kristen. It is--it's definitely the other man's?
Jennifer: Listen, you--you've always wanted to be a mother, and I know that you would never end this pregnancy. So maybe Brady would understand.
Kristen: Oh, my God, Jennifer. No, he would definitely not understand this. It t u
JJ: Rory, you and I need to talk about getting back into business.
Rory: Really? Wait, but I thought that you said that we had to lie low for a while.
JJ: Well, not anymore. The cops have lost interest, so there's no reason why we can't start dealing again.
[Knock at door]
Rafe: Oh. Hey, do me a favor, will you? Take that pitcher and throw it across the room for me?
Jordan: Excuse me?
Rafe: I'm sorry. I don't mean to take my frustrations out on you. You the new nurse?
[Knock at door]
Kate: I figured it out.
Rafe: Figured what out?
Kate: You can go.
Jordan: I need to speak with Mr. Hernandez about his physical therapy.
Kate: Well, I'm quite sure that can wait until his physical therapist is here.
Jordan: She is. I'm your physical therapist.
Sami: Your father is one sick, twisted son of a bitch.
EJ: Yeah, well, tell me something I don't know.
Sami: Kate was here. She wanted to talk about what happened, and she was telling me that she thinks that Stefano didn't send Bernardi to kill Rafe.
Sami: It turns out, she's right. Stefano's instructions were not for Bernardi to slit Rafe's throat. He wanted him to slit something else... something to make sure that Rafe didn't have sex with Kate, or anyone else, ever again.
EJ: Frankly, right now, I wish he'd finished the job before you shot him.
Brady: You know, I made this decision to be open about getting back together with Kristen, but Daniel, I don't know. I don't know if it was such a good idea.
Brady: I almost wish we were sneaking around again. 'Cause then people wouldn't be able to, you know, give their opinions, be judgmental about it. It may not be secret, but at least it'd be safe.
Daniel: You really think so?
Brady: I'm beginning to realize there's a big difference between secrecy and privacy.
Maggie: Oh, yeah. "Maternal." That is exactly the word that pops into my mind when I hear Kristen's name.
Eric: You know, we're in a church and we're supposed to be kind and forgiving.
Maggie: Mm-hmm. And I will be kind and forgiving to Kristen the minute I am convinced that she's changed. And it's gonna take more than her word for me to buy that.
Eric: Yeah, I see your point.
Eric: But you know, I just... today, I just saw this flash of human frailty. There's just something about her I just can't quite put my finger on. It makes me very, very uneasy.
Jennifer: Um, do you want me to wait around until you get the results?
Kristen: Oh. Yeah, please.
Jennifer: Okay, I will. I'm going to. I'm gonna call the hospital and tell them that I'm gonna be late, okay?
Kristen: Thank you.
Jennifer: I'll be right back.
