Episode #12116 ~ An emotional run-in with Marge shakes Sami; Justin tells EJ there's a hitch in his plan.
Provided By Suzanne
JJ: Thank you, doctor. This is perfect. [Sniffles]
JJ: Mom, I'm so glad you're here. Oh. I'm sorry, uh... I thought you were alone.
[Knock on door]
EJ: Justin. Thought I was meeting you at the courthouse.
Justin: We were. Come outside.
EJ: Well, is there a problem?
Justin: Your plan to take control of your father's empire...has hit a snag.
EJ: What? Well, how bad a snag?
Justin: Could upend your entire plan.
Hope: Little early to start on the hard stuff, don't you think?
Roman: Well...sun's gotta be up over the yardarm somewhere in the world.
Hope: You okay?
Roman: Yeah, well... let's see. I've been relieved of a job I love. My daughter may spend the rest of her life in prison for killing one of my own men. Yeah, yeah, heh heh. Yeah, I'm just dandy.
Marge: I've been wanting to talk to you.
Sami: Um... the memorial. If I had any idea it was today--
Chad: Fancy meeting you here.
Chad: What? Is that Sami and the cop's wife? Whew, well, that can't be good.
Sami: Look, this is a horrible day for you. Talking to me is not gonna make it better.
Marge: Damn it, you murdered my husband--the least you can do is hear me out.
JJ: Man, I can't help screwing things up.
Jennifer: No, you didn't. Really.
JJ: I thought you wanted to talk.
Jennifer: Yes, of course I do.
JJ: So I figured you'd be alone. Sorry.
Jennifer: That went well.
Justin: I just got a call from Mr. Shin. And apparently he has some reservations about backing this takeover.
[Sniffs] His vote is critical, Justin. That little bastard can't just change his mind. Okay, I'll call him. I sold him on the idea once before, I will sell him on the idea again.
Justin: Do you know what time it is in Tokyo right now?
EJ: I don't care what time it is in Tokyo! This is my one chance to destroy my father, and I'm not gonna let it slip through my fingers.
Chad: Looks like Sami could use some backup.
Abigail: Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
Sami: Go ahead...you say what you need to say.
Marge: I keep going over it all, you know? It's like a--a tape loop I can't stop. Because of you... I don't have a husband, and my son doesn't have a father. [Scoffs] And as if that wasn't enough, you keep trying to destroy Joe's memory.
Sami: I'm sorry, but I know what I saw.
Marge: And I know... knew... my husband. The guy I fell in love with. The man I married. The man who fed me ice chips when I was in labor with our son. And you are wrong about him. Please...please, please just say you made a mistake. Say you didn't mean to kill him. Your ex-husband was in a coma, right? You must have been in a state. Maybe--maybe your mind played a trick on you. Maybe you saw something or thought you saw something that you really didn't see.
Sami: If I said that, I would be lying.
Marge: You said Joe had a weapon, and nobody can find it. Why? Why do you have to ruin Joe for Timmy when you never even knew him?
Sami: You're right. I didn't know your husband. And my heart goes out to you and Timmy. But I swear to you on the life of my children that that man had a weapon, and if I hadn't stopped him, he would have killed Rafe Fernandez.
Roman: No matter what Sami has done in the past, I know she wouldn't shoot an innocent man. No, no, what bothers me is that I didn't know Joe Bernardi was dirty.
Hope: You believe he was?
Roman: Oh, yeah. Yeah, I do. But it seems I'm in the minority. From what I hear, Abe is putting together a hero's funeral for the guy, right?
Abe: Right. Look, the department is in a rough position. I mean, there's no hard evidence Bernardi was corrupt, and Bernardi's not around to defend himself. And the mayor and the department are taking a lot of heat to give him a proper service.
Roman: I get that. You know, there's nothing else you can do. I do, I understand.
Abe: Just hang in there. It's time to go.
Hope: Hang in there.
Jennifer: I should go in and talk to JJ.
Daniel: Right, yeah. I should, uh, I should get home and see parker.
Jennifer: I'll call you later.
Daniel: Yeah. Great.
Jennifer: Thank you for coming.
Daniel: Jennifer... I-I--
Daniel: I should go. Good luck with, uh, JJ.
Jennifer: Thanks. Listen, JJ, what you saw out there...
JJ: You don't have to explain. I get it.
Jennifer: Get what?
JJ: Why you hate me so much.
EJ: Did you take down what I said? Good. When you find the elusive Mr. Shin, make sure you read that to him word for word. Well, that should put the fear of God in him.
Justin: That's all you can do for now. Um, EJ, we really need to get to Sami's hearing.
EJ: Everything she's going through...that's my father's doing, you know.
Justin: Sami's life would be a lot easier if we could prove that.
EJ: Yeah, well, we can't.
Justin: The defense is allowed to present an alternative version of what happened.
EJ: Justin, we don't have any evidence.
Justin: Stefano would really skip town and leave the mother of his grandchildren to bear the brunt of all this?
EJ: Without blinking an eye. Why do you think it is that I'm so desperate to destroy him?
Marge: You told me you had a son Timmy's age. Is his father his hero? [Crying] Timmy idolized Joe! You are taking away the only thing he has left. He's gonna grow up thinking his father that he lost is a crooked cop--is that what you want?
Sami: No, of course not.
Marge: Then, for God's sake, stop! Please change your story. Stop lying!
Abe: Marge, Marge, Marge, Marge, Marge...please, please. Not here, all right?
Marge: What other chance do I have?
Hope: Marge, you don't want Timmy to see this. You don't want him to hear you.
Marge: I'll go talk to him. I hear you're going before the grand jury today.
Sami: Yeah, I am.
Marge: I guess you think you'll get off because your father's the police commissioner and your fiancÚ's a DiMera. But I still believe in justice, and you will pay for murdering my husband.
Chad: I think we should get the hell out of here. Come on. Let's go.
Sami: God, poor woman.
Hope: I'm sorry. I'm sorry that happened to you. Especially today.
Sami: Listen, you know, you have to help me. We have to make sure that the family doesn't find out that I have the grand jury trial today, okay--especially grandma. I'm really worried that-- I don't--I don't want her to get upset, okay?
Hope: I just saw your dad. I didn't say anything.
Sami: Okay. Thank you. Um, where is he?
Hope: At the pub. You better get going. Good luck.
Sami: Thank you.
Hope: I love you.
Sami: Daddy. Hi.
Roman: Oh, sweetheart. Hey.
Sami: Hey. Is grandma in the kitchen?
Roman: Uh, no, no--she and Kayla went out. They're doing something. Uh, did you need to talk to her?
Sami: Oh, no. It's nothing. You know, just being with grandma always makes me feel better.
Roman: Yeah, that's true. Uh...listen, the mayor put me on ice...till your case had cleared, so I don't know much of anything.
Sami: Dad, you love your job. Now you are in this mess because of me, and--
Sami: You must be sick to death of me screwing things up.
Roman: Samantha jean... if you don't know how much happiness you bring to my life, then I am not doing a very good job as your dad.
Sami: Happiness? Really?
Roman: Really. Really. I love you so damn much. And you listen to me, okay? Don't you worry. Whatever this is, I know it's not your fault.
Sami: Oh, daddy. [Sobbing]
Chad: [Sighs] That was, uh, some scene, huh?
Abigail: Yeah, I felt so sorry for that woman and her little boy.
Chad: And you know what it's like to lose a father, so...
Abigail: And I wasn't six years old.
Abigail: [Sighs] I don't want will's mom to go to prison.
Abigail: But I think that Mrs. Bernardi deserves to know the whole truth. Chad, did you see that little boy? He looked so alone.
Chad: Abigail, we need to keep quiet.
Abigail: Are you sure?
Chad: It's none of our business.
Abigail: Why not? Why isn't it any of our business? Didn't you see Sami having a huge fight with Bernardi?
Chad: That wasn't her fault.
Abigail: How do you know?
Chad: Because my son of a bitch father is behind all of it.
Jennifer: JJ, I don't hate you. I could never hate you.
JJ: You're into Daniel now. He thinks I'm a criminal.
Jennifer: No, he doesn't.
JJ: That's what he called me, mom.
Jennifer: What? When?
JJ: When he caught me with a prescription pad.
Jennifer: I-I didn't know that, I...
JJ: Look... he thinks I'm some kind of drug dealer, and he thinks that I trashed his car, but I didn't do any of that stuff. And I never, ever would. I don't know why he hates me so much, but he does. And, from what I can see, she's trying to turn you against me too.
Jennifer: That is not true. Because, first of all, no one could ever turn me against you. And, second of all, that is not what Daniel is doing.
JJ: Oh, really? Mom, I get arrested, and like five minutes later, here he is. He's telling you what a loser I am, right?
Jennifer: No, he came over here to make sure that I was all right.
JJ: Mm...I guess he found out that you were, huh?
Jennifer: JJ, son, that's not the issue. Daniel is not the issue here.
JJ: He totally is, mom.
JJ: Do you want to know why I was shoplifting today? It was because of him.
Daniel: Mom, hey. What are you doing here?
Maggie: Is this a bad time?
Daniel: No, no, no, it's fine--no, come on, it's--
Maggie: I just stopped by to see my grandson and to return his little shovel there.
Daniel: Yeah, Joanna, she has him at the park, but I could call her and ask her to drop him off at your place...
Daniel: If you want.
Maggie: Yeah, sure. Great. Just tell her not to give him his bath first. 'Cause he likes to run and play in our sprinklers.
Daniel: [Laughs] Yeah, sure. I'll...
Maggie: You seem...
Maggie: Something wrong?
Daniel: Yeah...and I keep making it worse.
EJ: Where is Samantha? She's late.
EJ: Relax? This is a grand jury appearance, Justin.
Justin: She'll be here.
Melinda: Hello, Justin. It's been a while.
Justin: Melinda. I'd like you to meet EJ DiMera. EJ, Melinda Trask.
Melinda: Nice to meet you. Of course, I know you by reputation.
Justin: Melinda has been appointed as the special prosecutor on Sami's case.
EJ: Oh...you'll excuse me, but I don't quite understand why the case requires a special prosecutor.
Melinda: I'm sure you'd prefer a situation where your family and the Brady family could trample due process, but the judge thought otherwise.
Justin: This is a pretty high-profile case, and Melinda here, well, she just loves the spotlight.
Melinda: I took this case because I believe in justice. And with a big gun like Justin heading up the defense, the people deserve equal firepower. Someone who's already beaten him.
Justin: [Chuckles] Sweet lady.
EJ: She's beaten you before?
Justin: We're one and one.
Sami: Hi. I'm not late, am I?
EJ: No, not at all.
Sami: I, um, I thought that these hearings weren't gonna be made public knowledge.
Justin: They're not.
Sami: Well, Marge Bernardi knew all about it.
EJ: You saw her?
Sami: Yes. Yes, I did. And...she made it clear that she can't wait to see me fry.
Sami: The last thing she said to me is that she's going to make sure that I pay for murdering her husband.
Justin: Sami...this is a-- a grief-stricken woman whose husband had a dark side she didn't know anything about.
Melinda: Ms. Brady? It's time.
Maggie: JJ was arrested for shoplifting?
Maggie: What is with this boy?
Daniel: Can you please keep that quiet, mom?
Maggie: Of course.
Daniel: All right, thank you.
Maggie: [Sighs] How is Jennifer doing?
Daniel: Oh, [Scoffs] She was a wreck when I got to her today. But...I'm sure by now, she's even worse.
Daniel: Oh...JJ caught us kissing.
Maggie: [Giggles] Do I need to point out that you two are responsible adults who happen to be in love with each other? Come on up here and talk to mom.
Daniel: [Chuckles] I think it looked to JJ like she doesn't care all that much about him.
Maggie: And that is so far from the truth.
Daniel: Oh, but she just-- she feels so guilty for not being there after Jack died.
Maggie: I know.
Daniel: But she's worried. She's just worried about him. And when JJ walked in on us kissing, it... [Groans] I could just feel that to him it looked like a neon sign that she's just not concerned about him.
Maggie: JJ is old enough to understand that Jennifer has enough room in her heart for you and her children.
Daniel: Well, maybe he's old enough, but I'm not so sure he gets that.
JJ: Daniel made up his mind that I stole the pad because I was going to write fake prescriptions and buy drugs.
Jennifer: Right. Poor you. Everyone just misjudges you, right, JJ?
JJ: I knew he would try to sell you on that. You decide he was right? Anyway, I figured I might as well hang out with that moron Cole.
Jennifer: Mm-hmm, and make it worse by shoplifting? How did you think that would work out?
JJ: I guess I figured, since you already think I'm a total loser, what difference does it make what I do?
Melinda: Ladies and gentlemen, let me remind you that your job today is not to decide whether Samantha Brady is guilty or innocent. You are here to review the facts of the case and then determine whether it's strong enough to indict ms. Brady on the charge of second degree murder. I'd like to start by showing you a photograph of the victim. His name is Joseph Bernardi. He was a detective with the Salem police department.
Abe: We are here to honor the life and service of detective Joseph Bernardi. Detective Bernardi received the citation of bravery in may, 2008, for risking his own life to rescue a child from a burning automobile. He also received the distinguished service citation for service beyond the call of ordinary duty.
Melinda: Ms. Brady, please take us through the events of the night officer Bernardi was killed.
Sami: I was visiting my ex-husband at university hospital.
Melinda: State his name, please.
Sami: Rafe--Rafael Hernandez.
Melinda: Detective Rafael Hernandez. Isn't that right?
Sami: Yes. Yes, it is, and, uh, he seemed warm. He was perspiring, in fact, and so I went into the bathroom to get a cool washcloth for him. I wanted to make him more comfortable. And I heard a noise coming from the room, so I peeked in, and that's when I saw a man standing over his bed.
Cop: My wife and I are expecting our first baby. Joe was gonna be his Godfather. You could always count on Joe. He was the best partner. He was my best friend. He was one of the best men I've ever known.
Melinda: You just happened to be carrying a gun?
Sami: No, I already had the gun in my hand because I was digging through my purse. I was looking for some aspirin. I had a really bad headache. So, um, I already had it in my hand, so when I saw that he had that straight razor in his--
Melinda: In your original statement to the police, you said it was a knife.
Sami: Right, well, it all happened very quickly. I saw the blade, I saw the handle. I just figured it was a knife.
Melinda: What made you change your mind?
Sami: I was hypnotized... to help me recall all the specific events from the night, and I was asked to remember everything, and that's when I realized it was a straight razor.
Melinda: And this...razor, has it ever been found?
Sami: No. But I know it was there. I saw him with it.
Melinda: As you were being hypnotized.
Sami: No...that night. I knew that he was threatening Rafe's life with something sharp. But when I was hypnotized, I realized that it was a straight razor.
Melinda: Was it a police psychiatrist who hypnotized you?
Sami: No...it was my mother. She's a psychiatrist.
Melinda: Your mother brought you to this realization?
Sami: He had that razor open. I couldn't just stand there and watch him slit Rafe's throat with it--I had to do something. I had the gun in my hand, and I fired. I didn't have anything else that I could do. You have to believe me. I'm sorry for getting emotional, it's just really difficult for me to talk about what happened that night.
Melinda: Do any of you have questions?
Juror: When you saw officer Bernardi in the room, why didn't you scream for help before you fired the gun?
Sami: Well, sir, I didn't have time to weigh out my options. I just had a couple seconds, and all I could think about was protecting my ex-husband.
Melinda: So shooting detective Bernardi, it wasn't personal?
Sami: No. All I was thinking about was Rafe.
Melinda: And you didn't know detective Bernardi from the police department? You had no prior relationship or animosity toward him before that night?
Sami: [Shrieking] You think I'm crazy?
Melinda: Ms. Brady, please answer the question.
Justin: You're gonna wear a groove in the rug.
EJ: I hate standing out here. I should be in there with Samantha.
Justin: Try not to worry. All Sami has to do is tell the truth. She'll be fine.
Melinda: Do you need me to rephrase the question?
Sami: Well, I may have seen detective Bernardi around the police station.
Melinda: Where your father and your aunt are both police officers.
Sami: Correct. But I've never had personal interaction with him.
Juror: Before you shot him, did you recognize him?
Sami: Absolutely not. I couldn't even see his face. It wasn't until later that I found out who he was and that he was a police officer.
[Trumpet playing taps]
Juror: So in terms of motive--
Sami: I didn't want to kill detective Bernardi. I didn't even want to hurt him. Only thing I was thinking about was stopping him. My only motive that night was to protect my ex-husband.
Maggie: Someday, JJ will get through this phase. Now, you have to believe that.
Daniel: Well, I hope that day comes soon.
Maggie: [Clears throat] Am I keeping you from something?
Daniel: Uh, no. No, no, no. I just, um, I gotta hop in the shower. I got a delivery guy coming and--'cause I ordered parker a new train set, and I'm gonna...
Daniel: Have it all set up before he comes home.
Maggie: Oh, he's gonna love that.
Maggie: Um, well, I'm just looking forward to seeing him later.
Maggie: Listen, um...do you want me to call first before I come bring him back?
Daniel: Yeah. Yeah, do. That would be great. Yes, thank you.
Daniel: Thank you for listening. Thank you. I know it's not easy.
Maggie: It's no problem.
Daniel: Uh-huh. And, please, um--
Maggie: I know...
Maggie: Don't repeat any of this.
Maggie: I know.
Daniel: Okay. Thank you. Thank you again. All right.
Maggie: Oh, sweetheart. I hope you won't be too angry with me.
JJ: You're not saying anything.
Jennifer: I'm just trying to figure out how to say it. Okay, here's the deal. You aren't stupid. And you aren't a baby. And you knew exactly what you were doing, and you decided to do it anyway. You're responsible for your actions. And it doesn't matter how you feel about Daniel. Because you're still gonna have to pay for what you've done. So now you're gonna go to class, and you're not gonna miss class. And right after class, you're gonna go to that store, and you're gonna apologize to the owner of that store and tell her that you stole from her. And you're gonna ask her what you can do to make things right. Is that clear? And if you think that I'm not gonna check up on you to make sure you're doing these things, you are sadly mistaken, mister. And right after you leave that store, you're gonna come right back to this house, and we are going to sit down and talk about your punishment. We're gonna talk about how you can regain my trust in you again, because you have blown it. You have blown it so sky high.
JJ: Mom, I'm sorry.
Jennifer: No, don't "mom" me. Don't. Go to class.
JJ: Yeah, I'll go to class after I make one quick stop.
EJ: Hey...how did it go?
Justin: Was Melinda tough on you?
EJ: Could you read the jury?
Sami: Um, I don't know, but I think that it went well.
EJ: Thank God.
Justin: Were you questioned by the jurors?
Sami: Yes, one guy asked me what I was thinking when I pulled the trigger, and I just said the only thing I was thinking about was protecting Rafe. And he seemed convinced.
Justin: Excellent. Great.
Sami: So how long do you think it'll take before they make their decision?
Marge: I doubt it'll take long. I'm sure that they looked at you and they listened to you... and they came to the same conclusion I did: That you deserve to rot in prison for the rest of your miserable life.
Chad: Sorry about that. The, uh, salesperson just talks forever.
Abigail: I can't stop thinking about what you said about your father.
Chad: He sent Bernardi to kill Rafe. EJ says the same thing.
Abigail: Can you prove it?
Chad: Of course not. The great Stefano DiMera knows how to cover his tracks. He left the country the day after Bernardi was shot. You think that was a coincidence?
Abigail: Does Sami know about this? Is that why she was going off on Bernardi in the video?
Chad: I don't know. What I do know is that I am disgusted to be Stefano DiMera's son, and I pray to God that I don't turn out like him. [Sighs]
Abigail: You're nothing like him. You never will be.
Chad: You sure? Maybe, no matter how hard I fight it, I'll always end up doing what Stefano would.
[Knock at door]
Daniel: Agh! Coming! Coming, coming, coming, coming. Ohh. Whew. Hey, I thought you said between 2:00 and...
JJ: Expecting my mom, Daniel?
Maggie: Uh, honey, is JJ here?
Jennifer: Uh, no, he's not. He's in class. I hope. Why did you want to see him?
Maggie: Oh, um, well, actually, I was hoping he wouldn't be here. Jen, honey, uh... Daniel told me what happened today.
Jennifer: Well, I am sorry. I really wish he hadn't done that.
Sami: That prosecutor, though, you could tell she was a real barracuda. She had it in for me.
Justin: Just try and take it easy.
Sami: It's easier said than done, with, um...
Justin: [Clears throat]
Marge: What do you want?
Justin: Well, I was--I don't know how long this is gonna take, and I was just thinking that maybe you should, you know, head on home and spend some time with your son.
Marge: My parents are with my son. I'm not going anywhere. We mourned my husband today, and I want to be here when justice is done.
Sami: I think I should go get some water. I'll be right back, okay?
EJ: Any luck?
Justin: Uh, no. She's determined to stay, but... good news is, I just got a text from our friends in Hong Kong. And it appears Mr. Shin is back on board.
EJ: Well, let's hope he stays on board, shall we?
Justin: Maybe this is a sign that everything's gonna work out for you and Sami.
EJ: Wouldn't that be pretty?
Abigail: I think you'll agree with me that no one has been as hard on you about your father as I have.
Chad: Hmm, well, I don't know about that.
Abigail: Yeah, you do.
Chad: Okay, I do.
Abigail: I was... self-righteous and judgmental. But the reason for that was because I didn't want them to change you. But I should have known that they could never do that.
Chad: [Chuckles] Well, I'm not as sure as you are.
Abigail: I understand how you feel.
Abigail: I do. My dad's biological father was physically and emotionally abusive.
Chad: You never told me about that.
Abigail: Yeah, well, it's not really something that I like to talk about. I mean...grandfathers are supposed to be these... twinkly-eyed guys that take you fishing and pull quarters out from behind your ear and stuff. Duke was the opposite of that.
Chad: [Chuckles] Wait a minute, his name was "duke"? Yikes. Yikes. Uh...
Chad: I'm sorry. Continue, please.
Abigail: When I got older, my dad used to always tell JJ and me when he got angry that he was afraid he was turning into his father. But my dad was a good man with a good heart. And we were never scared of him. So...you... aren't any more your father than my dad was his. And you never will be.
Chad: Okay. You really believe that?
Abigail: I wouldn't be saying it if I didn't.
Jennifer: Maggie, I'm sorry. I'm sorry to talk to you like that. I know that you just want to help.
Maggie: Daniel, he only confided in me because he feels so bad for you, as I do.
Jennifer: Yeah, I just need to...figure out how to handle JJ on my own.
Maggie: Well, I've done a certain amount of child rearing. I do understand what you're going through.
Jennifer: Okay. Just, I can't--I just can't talk about it right now, okay? [Crying] Please?
Daniel: I'm expecting a delivery person. I don't know why you're here. But I need to get dressed, so--
JJ: Listen, I know you think you can turn my mom against me, but you can't. So stop trying.
Daniel: Mom--hey, hey! Hey--
[Cell phone ringing]
Daniel: Ooh! [Muttering] Jennifer. "I need a little time to figure things out. In the meantime, please stop discussing JJ's problems with other people." [Sighs] That's beautiful. Just beautiful. Ugh!
Sami: No, I don't know how much more of this I can take.
The verdict is in.
Sami: Oh, my God, that means...
Justin: The grand jury has made its decision.
