Episode #11989 ~ Sami Agrees to Spend New Year's Eve With E.J.; Daniel Gives Jennifer Flowers

Provided By Suzanne

Rafe: [Sighs]

Sami: Hey, Rafe.

Rafe: Sami.

Sami: Hi.

Rafe: Hey. What are you doing here?

Sami: Um... [Laughs] I, uh, wanted to ask you something. I was hoping you could explain to me... [Sighs]

Rafe: Explain what?

Sami: Your disappearing act.

Daniel: Yeah, yeah. I should be out of here pretty soon. So are we still on for lunch?

Jennifer: Well, uh, yes, but I think that we should call it what it really is, which is a date. And, yes, we're still on.

Daniel: Great. Excellent. I will pick you up in a little bit.

Jennifer: Okay, I'll be here. And I took the whole day off.

Daniel: Great. All right, I will, um... I will see you soon. Okay, bye. The whole day. Yeah.

Jennifer: Okay, so what do you think? Here...

Abigail: I think you look great. Mom, you are hot, and Daniel is definitely going to agree with me.

Jennifer: Hot, yes. I'm hot. I'm very hot. This is the third outfit I have tried on.

Abigail: Why? You look great. Why are you so nervous? You're gonna have fun. Mom, "fun" being the operative word here, okay?

Jennifer: Yes, it's gonna be fun, yes. I just wish we--we made a breakfast date, because now I have to wait three hours for this date.

Abigail: Three hours is not a long time, mom.

Jennifer: Are you kidding me? It is an eternity. It's very long, and it's painful. In fact, it's--it's excruciating.

Nicole: Oh, wow.

Eric: I took that my first morning in Africa.

Nicole: Eric, it's beautiful.

Eric: It's yours. It's my way of saying thank you for letting me to talk out my feelings about what happened back there. I mean, thanks to you, I feel like I'm turning a new page. I owe you.

Nicole: Oh, come on. All I did was listen.

Eric: No. You did a lot more than that. And, you know, I don't even know if a photograph is enough.

Nicole: Well, if you really do mean that, uh, there is something else I'd like from you. And it would mean the world to me.

EJ: [Shivers]

Chad: Looking for someone?

EJ: Oh. [Chuckles] Samantha.

Chad: You, uh, try calling her?

EJ: No, it's fine. I'll track her down. I'll track her down.

Chad: Well...

EJ: Christmas is gonna come a little bit late for me this year. It's definitely coming, though.

Rafe: "Disappearing act"?

Sami: Yeah. I mean, I saw you for what, seven seconds during the holidays? And it just seemed like you were making yourself scarce on purpose. And I'd like to know why.

Rafe: Hmm.

Nicole: Uh... I-I shouldn't have to tell you, of all people, that sometimes the best gifts aren't from a store. And this one, um... well, this one would be from the heart. Would you... be my date for new year's eve?

Rafe: You're exaggerating. I mean, it was the holidays. Come on. I was busy.

Sami: "Busy"?

Rafe: Yeah. I was spending time with Gabi and Nick, and... I called my mother.

Sami: Yeah, and I saw you at saint Luke's at Eric's midnight mass. And I know you saw me. And then I went to say hi after. You were gone.

Yeah, it was 1:00 in the morning. I was tired.

Sami: Okay. So then Christmas day Sydney-- you should've seen the look on her face when she opened up that penguin. She was thrilled. It just seems out of character that you wouldn't want to have been there for that. Why not? I think I deserve an answer.

Rafe: Okay. Okay, fine. You want an answer. Well, careful what you wish for, 'cause you might not like it.

Hope: Hi.

Abigail: Hope, you're back.

Hope: Yes, the magic of the red-eye.

Abigail: Welcome.

Hope: Hi.

Abigail: Is Bo with you?

Hope: No, no. He, um, decided to spend a few extra days with the kids.

Abigail: Oh, okay. Well, you guys were all missed at Christmas. I have to get going, but make sure you ask mom about her lunch plans.

Hope: Oh, you can count on it.

Abigail: Very exciting.

Jennifer: Hush.

Hope: Oh, very exciting. Seeing Daniel today? Is that why you're looking especially gorgeous?

Jennifer: It's lunch. We're just going to lunch.

Hope: Yes, I am familiar with the meal. What I'm less familiar with is how things are going between you and Daniel.

Jennifer: It's--it's good. You know, I mean, we're just-- here. We're taking it...

Hope: Thank you.

Jennifer: You know, just one step at a time. We just don't want to put any added pressure on ourselves at this stage of the game, you know.

Hope: Yeah, it makes sense.

Jennifer: Yeah. We're just keeping it low-key. And we're not even doing anything for new year's eve, 'cause Daniel's at the hospital, so it's just-- just low-key. You know, like, really low-key.

Hope: Got it. Low-key.

Jennifer: Mm-hmm.

Hope: So I've got to ask... if you're both okay with this, why does it sound like you're trying so hard to be okay with it?

Jennifer: I don't know, hope. It's just, you know, it's--it's just been a while since Daniel and I, you know-- a lot has happened in--in between that time.

Hope: I know, cuz, but... you know.

Jennifer: What if we had our chance... and that was it? What if there... is no getting back what we had?

Daniel: No. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. No, I managed to dig up that date book that you emailed me about. Yeah, from two years ago, right? Yeah, you know what? I think I got it right here. I, uh--I'll mail that to you tomorrow. Yeah. Yes, I can look it up, miss bossy. Hold on. Jeez. I'll find it. My goodness. Uh, y-yeah. No, sorry. Um, confirmation number is g-h-Jeff, uh... g-6. Mm-hmm. Listen, I just got paged. Uh, I-I got to go. Yeah. No, I love you too. All right, bye.

Maggie: Daniel? Why did you just tell someone you had been paged? Oh. Two years since parker's baptism.

Daniel: Two years to the day that I found out... I lost parker.

Nicole: Oh, no, no, no, no. No, I mean, I-it's not gonna be a date. You're not--not-- you're not gonna be my date. That's not what I meant. [Mouths words]

Eric: So what do you mean?

Nicole: Well, I-I just meant that it would be, you know, the two of us ringing in the new year. And, oh, gosh, that still sounds like a date, doesn't it?

Eric: Yeah, a little bit.

Nicole: Okay. Why don't I start from the beginning?

Eric: Please.

Nicole: Okay. Uh, yeah, you know, so I saw that--that father Tobias was handling the late... midnight mass, you know, for new year's. So I thought, "yay." You know, the two of us would be free. And--and you know how new year's can be. And I just didn't-- I don't want to be alone... dwelling on everything that I've lost and... well, since you're practically my only friend, I thought it would be nice if the two of us could just hang out together. See?

Eric: I-I do. And you're right. New year's eve is a very special night, and I can understand why you wouldn't want to be alone.

Nicole: Great. So... what time are you picking me up?

Eric: That's the thing. I'm gonna have to say no.

EJ: So I'm with Samantha in the Horton town square, and we're standing under the lights of the Christmas tree. And the kids are there, and they have their presents, and they're playing with them. I-I tell you Chad, it was just magical.

Chad: Yeah, well, it sounds like it.

EJ: It was. I told her... that I wanted us to be a family again.

Chad: [Scoffs] You did? What'd she say? I'm sorry.

EJ: She didn't say anything, really, which is fine, because I didn't want to put any pressure on her.

Chad: Ah, so this is patient EJ here.

EJ: Something like that.

Chad: You know, I wonder if you're letting the spirit of the holiday make you a little too optimistic. I mean, this is Sami we're talking about here, right? Whew.

EJ: "Whew"?

Chad: I--

EJ: Looks like I'm not the only DiMera who has a little bit of something to look forward to in the new year, eh? [Chuckles]

Rafe: So... here it is, plain and simple.

Sami: Okay, go on.

Rafe: I've decided I don't want to play games anymore.

Sami: I'm not playing games with you.

Rafe: [Scoffs] No? Okay. Well, how about the other day at the pub when Sydney decided that she wanted a stuffed penguin for Christmas? So I ran out of there, went to, like, 12 stores to try and find the exact same thing, and I found it. So I rushed back to the pub, and there you are... with your arms around EJ.

Sami: You saw that? Why didn't you say anything?

Rafe: Oh, what was I supposed to say, hmm?

Sami: I don't know. You could've asked me why, and I would've told you that EJ was upset because he had just visited his dead sister Lexie's grave. And I felt bad for him. It's Christmas.

Rafe: Okay. So that's all that was, then-- just a consoling gesture in the spirit of the holiday?

Sami: Exactly.

Rafe: Okay. Well, how about you working at countess Wilhelmina... with EJ as your boss again?

Sami: We've talked about this.

Rafe: Yeah. No, you're right. We have. We have. I just don't think that we've talked about it honestly.

Sami: What does that mean?

Rafe: It means I'm wondering if EJ is getting the same mixed signals from you that I am. And I have a feeling that the answer is yes.

Sami: [Sighs]

EJ: Well, I was--I was actually hoping that--that I might be able to have a little bit of clarity this Christmas.

Sami: About what?

EJ: Well, this--this thing between the two of us... I was just wondering where you see that going.

Sami: I don't have to sit here and take the third degree from you.

Rafe: Well, yeah, you do, actually, 'cause you started this conversation. So now we're gonna finish it.

Hope: So now you're second-guessing this? Cuz, why? Why do you this to yourself?

Jennifer: I don't know why I do this. It's not like I want to do this.

Hope: You know what? If Bo were here, he could talk some sense into you.

Jennifer: Oh, that's what I need. I need male perspective on this.

Hope: Your hesitation with moving on--

Jennifer: No. I know what you're gonna say. It's not because of Jack... because I know Jack. He--he would want me to be happy. He would want me to feel loved if that's what I really want.

Hope: Is it?

Jennifer: Yeah. Yeah, it is. And I-I was crazy about Daniel. I mean, I-I felt like a teenager.

Hope: And so is he... and still is--crazy about you.

Jennifer: But, really, so much time has passed. And I know that I keep saying that. What if--what if so much time has passed that we just can't get back to what we had and--

Hope: Cuz, listen to me. If you want this--I mean, really want it... then you have to learn to trust it.

Maggie: Who gave you this?

Daniel: Kate gave it to me. Philip sent it to her for Christmas. I don't know why I'm carrying it around with me.

Maggie: Well, it's understandable. You put your heart and soul into being a good father to parker, and then he was taken away from you so fast and so abruptly.

Daniel: Yeah, well, I'm-- I'm trying not to focus too much on it, not all that successfully. Uh... Maggie, um, I know I've avoided asking you this, but could you tell me at least just a little bit about him? What's he like? Because I know--I know you and victor have been going to visit him from time to time.

Maggie: Hmm. Yes, we have. Mm. He's a lovely little boy. He's got the best smile. [Both laughing] He loves to throw a ball, any kind of ball. Victor thinks that he's got exceptional athletic ability.

Daniel: Hmm.

Maggie: I mean, not to say he's the least bit prejudiced or anything.

Daniel: [Laughs] No.

Maggie: Anyway... he is a delight.

Daniel: Well, you know-- [Laughs] That's the-- I guess things get like this around the holidays, don't they? I mean, everything gets a little... magnified.

Maggie: Yeah. Yes. The blessings...

Daniel: Mm-hmm.

Maggie: Also the sorrows and the loss.

Daniel: Yeah. Well, you know, under the headline of blessings, I have got a lot to be hopeful for right now. I do.

Maggie: Yeah, you and Jennifer were awfully close at our house the other morning.

Daniel: Ah, yes, we were. Actually, we have a lunch date... though part of me wishes it was a breakfast date, because I don't know if I can wait for lunch right now... you know. But... I don't know--maybe... maybe a little extra time will be A... be a good thing.

Maggie: I think you're gonna need more than a little extra time.

Daniel: What?

Maggie: Daniel, it's an anniversary. And by being in denial about it, chalking your feelings up to the holidays, I think it's a mistake.

Nicole: Oh. [Clears throat] Okay. So even though our non-date is just about two friends hanging out, what-- Salem is full of petty gossips who would pounce at the sight of their new priest out on the town with the world's biggest screw-up?

Eric: No, no, Nicole, I promise you, I'm not--

Nicole: Did you see the look on Sami's face when she found out we were just even friends? I mean, granted, your sister's always been an alarmist, not to mention she hates me with a vengeance.

Eric: Nicole, stop. You're not listening. I'm not saying no because I'm afraid that people will talk.

Nicole: Oh. Oh, so you're just saying no to me, period?

Eric: I kind of already have plans. I'm gonna be volunteering.

Nicole: Oh. I see.

Eric: Yeah, and if you're looking for a way to fill in your hours leading up to new year, we can always use an extra set of hands.

Nicole: You want me to ring in the new year by volunteering? Are you crazy?

Chad: What are you talking about? Looking forward to what? What are you--she's coming. She's coming.

Abigail: Hi.

EJ: Abigail. Oh, it's so lovely to see you, my dear.

Abigail: Oh. Thank you.

EJ: I hope you had a pleasant Christmas.

Abigail: I did, yeah. It was, um... it was better than I expected it to be.

EJ: Right, yes. I'm sure it was very hard for you.

Abigail: Yeah. But like I said, it was better than I hoped.

EJ: So you two spent Christmas day together, did you?

Abigail: Yeah.

Chad: Yeah, just a couple of hours.

Abigail: Chad was working at the coffeehouse on Christmas, and it was completely empty. So I convinced him to close up early and come to my mom's with me.

Chad: And thank you very much. I had a wonderful time.

Abigail: Yeah, of course. I mean, how could you not? It's the Horton house on Christmas.

Chad: Hmm.

Abigail: Well, I'm gonna get some hot chocolate and split. So, um, I'll see you later.

Chad: Okay.

Abigail: Bye.

Chad: Yeah, yeah, knock it off.

EJ: I didn't say anything.

Chad: Mm-hmm.

EJ: Am I supposed to just ignore the way you looked when she came in?

Chad: That look was to get her over here so I could thank her for yesterday.

EJ: Oh, sure it was. She's very attractive. Huh? No? You guys had something special once, didn't you?

Chad: So I should just get back together with her? Sure as hell would let you off the hook, wouldn't it?

Sami: Why are you doing this now?

Rafe: Well, because I don't know about you, but I don't want to go into the new year with the way things are now.

Sami: I didn't realize they were that horrible for you.

Rafe: You know, every time that I think that you and I are primed to move forward in our relationship, there's EJ. And there's you. But you're not trying to push him away. In fact, it seems to me almost as though you're encouraging him.

Sami: Okay, fine. All right, the truth is I am... confused. I-I am conflicted. I-I feel like I'm-- I feel like I'm caught in the middle.

Rafe: Because that's where you put yourself.

Sami: And you-- I mean, yes, I-I agree. I feel like I'm glad that... we are healing. And it does feel like sometimes there is something, and we could maybe take a step forward. But then... but then EJ--

Rafe: EJ what?

Sami: Is the father of two of my children. And, yes, I have been working with him, and, yes, I can see that he is different. He has changed.

Rafe: [Scoffs] Right. Well, if you think that, then so have you.

Sami: I realize this is not what you want to hear. But you asked me to be honest.

Rafe: Okay, fine. Then let's be honest. The truth is I don't think that you really are all that conflicted. And you're in the middle because that's exactly where you want to be.

Sami: What?

Rafe: Oh, yeah. You could have chosen one of us by now. Instead, you've got us both circling around you because that's exactly what you want.

Sami: That's not true.

Rafe: Oh, come on. Listen, if you're not gonna admit it to me, just admit it to yourself.

Hope: Jen, trying to measure what you and Daniel might have now by what you had in the past, I mean, what's the point in that? Because whatever this becomes, it's gonna be different, honey, no matter what. And that's what you need to embrace, instead of trying to recapture the past.

Jennifer: I know that. I just--you know that I don't like change.

Hope: I know. I know. Listen, the truth is... a lot of things are gonna be different this time around. Or you know what? Maybe not. There's no way of telling. But honestly, at the end of the day, the only thing that really matters is what the relationship is that you have with Daniel now.

Jennifer: Yes, I know that you're right.

Jennifer: Honey... I've been where you are. And I know it can work. You can find yourself with someone again, and you know what? It can be better than you ever imagined.

Jennifer: Yeah. Thank you. I know.

Hope: Love you.

Jennifer: I just-- oh, gosh.

Hope: What?

Jennifer: I forgot my files...

Hope: Oh.

Jennifer: In my desk at the hospital.

Hope: Okay.

Jennifer: I got to go.

Hope: Well, you know-- you know what? I'm gonna tag along, because I actually have to check up on a witness who's in I.C.U.

Jennifer: Wait, but you know what? I-I have to rush, though, because I have to get back here, because Daniel is picking me up for our date, and I don't want him to think that I'm standing him up, because that wouldn't work.

Hope: Well, he would never think that.

Jennifer: I know, but I got to go fast. Oh, and this is good, because then this'll take up time, and then it'll make it feel like time's going more quickly.

Hope: Yes.

Jennifer: That's great. Let's go. Come on.

Hope: I'm gonna take my own car, though.

Jennifer: Oh, let's hurry.

Hope: I have other things-- should we shut these lights off, save some money?

Eric: Nicole, I know this might not be your ideal way of spending the night, but just hear me out.

Nicole: [Clears throat] Go ahead.

Eric: I'm gonna be volunteering at the men's homeless shelter. We're gonna ring in the new year, and I'm--I'm gonna talk to them about their feelings and... about how they handle it over the holidays.

Nicole: Mm-hmm. By getting drunk and blowing on a few horns.

Eric: Well, sister Margaret-- she's gonna be running a similar event with the women's shelter.

Nicole: Mm. Okay, and you--you want me to spend the night there.

Eric: Yeah, why not? I mean, it's a way to give back. You know, I think it would be really good--

Nicole: Oh, don't say that! Why do you say it'll be good for me? Why do you do this to me? Really? First you go on and on about how important it is for me to attend Christmas mass.

Eric: I thought you liked being there.

Nicole: I did. But I am not your pet project. All... all I want is to not be alone on new year's. Is that too much to freakin' ask?

Eric: I'm trying to give you something to do.

Nicole: No, you're trying to get me to do something you want me to do. God, you and your freakin' faith. You know what? I am not you, Eric. And just because I work here, it doesn't mean that I want to be molded into your image. You know what? I hope that you have a rockin' new year's. I do. And while you're there helping the homeless guys talk about their feelings, I-- maybe, just maybe, they can teach you to how to have a little fun.

Eric: Nicole, wait.

Sami: Okay, I get it. It's easy just to blame this on me, that I'm being selfish and indecisive. The bottom line is I had no idea where you even stood. I didn't know that I had to sort out my feelings according to your deadline.

Fair enough. But I have feelings too. And I have sorted mine out. And I am not gonna get stuck playing this game anymore, okay? I'm done. And that's it.

Sami: Rafe.

Rafe: Okay, no, no, no, no. You asked for my answer. And there it is, all right?

Sami: Okay.

Rafe: All right.

Sami: So what about Gabi's wedding?

Rafe: You and I are both adults. I'm sure we can pull it together and make sure it's a success for Nick and Gabi and... that's just where we are right now, okay? If you change your mind, you want to shut things down with EJ--

Sami: Why are you doing that?

Rafe: Because I feel like I have earned the right not to be in a competition for you... especially not with him.

EJ: Look, Chad... I'm sorry that things did not work out with Melanie. Oh, no, no, hey, just sit down for a second. You have to come to terms with the fact that she's not coming back. It's time for you to move on with your life. Look, I didn't suggest that you went out with Abigail to alleviate any sense of guilt.

Chad: Then why?

EJ: Because I want you to be happy. I want you to thrive. Look, you can be angry with me. You can be angry with Gabi. But you need to think about the fact that the real person that you're angry with is you. Nobody is more responsible for what happened with Melanie than you are. Look, you don't have to forgive me or forgive Gabi. But find it inside yourself to forgive yourself. It's just a thought. Chad, don't waste... what new year's has to offer, okay? It's not about, you know, resolution to lose weight or--or stop smoking or whatever else. Okay? Resolve to make a move. Go out that night. It doesn't have to be with Abigail, but with someone. Seize the night. Seize the year. Hmm? Go on. I know you can do it, brother.

Maggie: I know you think I worry too much. After all these years of being a sponsor, I know it's not healthy to suppress your feelings. And regardless of how much you are looking forward to seeing Jennifer, maybe today is not the right day for it.

Daniel: You think I should cancel our date?

Maggie: Yeah, you've got so much going on. You're dealing with so much emotionally. Yes. I think you are not up for this date right now.

Daniel: No. No, I'm not canceling our date.

Maggie: Oh, Daniel.

Daniel: Mom, I love you. I value your opinions, but in this case, you are wrong. Jennifer and I--we shared a lot of special memories, a lot of them. We had a lot of special moments over the holidays, and I don't want them to be just moments. I want more than that. And now we finally, today, have an opportunity to share some quality time together. And, no, I am not backing out.

Nicole: Oh.

Rafe: That's mine.

Nicole: Uh, ever hear of "finders keepers"?

Rafe: I literally just dropped it.

Nicole: And I literally just picked it up.

Rafe: Nicole, give me the damn money.

Nicole: Why? Because you say it's yours?

Rafe: Are you calling me a liar?

Nicole: Are you calling me a thief?

Rafe: Okay, give me the money now.

Nicole: No, you know what? You know what? I would pay double just to have one conversation today that didn't result with some moron telling me what to do. You keep it.

Rafe: Oh, yeah? Well, guess what. I would pay triple just to have someone listen to me for the first time. You keep it.

Nicole: [Laughs]

Rafe: That was--

Nicole: Well...

Sami: So then he had the nerve to say that he thinks I enjoy the two of them fighting over me and that I don't want to have to choose. And you know what he said? Get this. He said, "I'm not competing for you anymore."

Eric: And what did you say?

Sami: I was pretty furious. So I didn't say anything. But looking back at it, I wished I had smacked him.

Eric: [Laughs]

Sami: I know that that is not what you would counsel me to do.

Eric: No, it isn't. Clearly, the Christmas spirit is wearing thin around here.

Sami: It has nothing to do with Christmas.

Eric: Listen, why don't you just take a deep breath? Just try not to worry about it.

Sami: A deep breath, really? Why didn't I think of that?

Eric: You know, maybe... you just need to give it time. And I think Rafe loves you. I believe he really does, and maybe he'll come around.

Sami: I didn't say I wanted him to come around. You should've heard him. I think it sounded pretty damn--darn final.

Eric: You know what? Maybe he's just trying to put the pressure on you to make that choice... one way or the other.

Sami: He doesn't think I can. And he's wrong. Believe me. I know exactly how to choose.

[Door opens]

[Phone rings]

Daniel: Hey.

Maggie: Wow. You look nice. You clean up good.

Daniel: Oh, what?

[Cell phone rings]

Daniel: This old sweater, huh?

Maggie: Mm-hmm.

Daniel: Hold on a second.

Maggie: What's wrong?

Daniel: I-I don't know. Jen wants to cancel our lunch today.

[Cell phone rings]

Daniel: She's not answering. I don't know what--

[Cell phone rings]

Daniel: She's sick. That doesn't make any sense. She sounded fine when I spoke to her earlier.

Maggie: Oh.

Daniel: I'm sorry. Excuse me. I'm gonna--I'm gonna answer this.

Maggie: Okay.

Hope: Hey, Maggie.

Maggie: Hi.

Hope: Who's sick?

Maggie: Jennifer. I mean, she and Daniel had a date, and apparently she just canceled.

Hope: No, no, no. She's not sick. I just saw her 20 minutes ago.

Maggie: You were with her? Where?

Hope: Here. She came to the hospital to pick up some files, and then she went home to wait for Daniel.

Maggie: Oh, no. Um, well, if she was here, she might have heard something.

Hope: What are you talking about?

Maggie: Oh. Come with me.

Chad: Hey.

Abigail: Hi. Wow. Twice in one day.

Chad: Yeah.

Abigail: You following me?

Chad: No, I'm just on my way to the coffeehouse.

Abigail: Mm-hmm.

Chad: Sorry to disappoint.

Abigail: I'm crushed. Crushed, in fact, that I may have to continue consoling myself with these after-Christmas sales.

Chad: Oh, yeah. I mean, it's kind of crazy how the holidays are coming to an end, huh?

Abigail: Yeah.

Chad: It's gonna be new year's eve before you know it. Do you, uh, have any plans?

Abigail: Me? No. Not really, no. I mean, not unless you consider playing board games with my mom at home "plans."

Chad: Hmm.

Abigail: What about you?

Chad: Me? I haven't really given it much thought.

Abigail: Oh. Anyway, I should probably get going. The boss can't be late for his own shift. Um, and, hey, if I don't see you, Happy New Year.

Abigail: You too. Happy New Year.

Nicole: It must have been some showdown between you and Sami. I've never seen you in such a sour mood before.

Rafe: Well, I told her I am tired of being toyed with. I'm not gonna do it anymore. I'm not.

Nicole: Hmm. Was she surprised when she heard you say that?

Rafe: I think so.

Nicole: Mm-hmm. And did you actually mean it? Not that I'm saying Sami's some great catch or anything, and you definitely deserve better.

Rafe: All right, let's not rag on Sami, okay? It's not gonna help.

Nicole: I'm not ragging on her.

Rafe: Well--

Nicole: You love her. And like it or not, she's the one you want to be with.

Rafe: Yes. But I am not gonna compete for her and certainly not with EJ. And if that's the case, then there is something fundamentally wrong.

Nicole: Yeah, you got that. So that's it? It's over? Well... I guess I understand. That's the way I feel about Daniel now. Not so long ago, he was my whole world. Don't look at me like that. I am over Daniel now. Okay, fine. I am working on getting over Daniel--whatever. I mean, it's why I've been so anxious to be alone on... [Growls]

Rafe: On...?

Nicole: Oh, my God. I just figured out a way for us to help each other out.

Eric: Well, listen, I need to take off. Are you gonna be okay?

Sami: Yes. Thank you.

Eric: EJ, Happy New Year.

EJ: Happy New Year. [Exhales deeply] Oh, my goodness, I thought he'd never leave.

Sami: [Chuckles] What do you want?

EJ: I think you know the answer to that question, Samantha. I made it perfectly clear to you yesterday what I'm hoping for for the new year. Still haven't heard from you, though.

Sami: Don't, okay? Don't even say it. Don't say that you think I'm not sure about how I feel, okay? I am perfectly capable of deciding what I want and what I don't want, even if they're very important decisions.

EJ: Good. I'm glad to hear it, because I have another one for you.

[Knock at door]

Rafe: New year's eve?

Nicole: Well, I'm not busy, and I'm pretty sure your dance card's wide open.

Rafe: Oh, thanks.

Nicole: Oh, come on, haven't you seen the flyers around town? The Horton town square's having a huge party. There's gonna be fireworks and dancing. Doesn't that sound perfect?

EJ: I need you to make a decision. Yes or no... will you be my date for new year's eve?

Sami: What?

EJ: They're having a big party down at the Horton town square. I was very much hoping that you might be by my side. What do you say?

Rafe: So this would be like A...

Nicole: No, no, no. This is absolutely not a date. We are just two friends that are stuck with nothing to do on the one night of the year you absolutely do not want to be stuck with nothing to do.

Rafe: Right.

Nicole: [Laughs]

Rafe: You know what? You are right. As much as I do hate to admit it, you are right.

Nicole: Thank you.

Rafe: So let's make it official. Nicole, you, uh--you want to go out on new year's eve?

Nicole: Yes. [Laughs] I'd love to.

Sami: Yes. EJ, I would be honored to go with you on new year's eve.

Nicole: Something tells me it'll be...

Sami: A night to remember.
