Episode #11986 ~ E.J., Abe, Theo, & Chad Bond Over Missing Lexie; Eric Opens Up to Nicole

Provided By Suzanne

Sami: Whoo! Whoo! It's cold out there.

Caroline: [Laughs] Oh, well! Look at these adorable little elves! Come here. Come on, you two. Come on. Oh, gimme a big hug. Ooh.

Sami: Grandma, they were so great while we were shopping I promised them each a hot chocolate.

Caroline: Oh, wow.

Sydney: We helped to pick out your presents.

Johnny: Don't tell her what it is!

Sami: [Laughing] Okay, you both were wonderful. Why don't you have a seat? I will get your hot chocolates. There you go. Thank you! Thank you! I will take all of these. You keep Nigel.

Caroline: Oh, my gosh.

Sami: Come on, grandma. All right, thank you.

Caroline: Where's Allie?

Sami: She's with Lucas. She, um, is having a great day with her dad. How are you?

Caroline: Oh! It's a good day. I've had quite a few in a row. I consider it an early Christmas present.

Sami: Well, no one deserves it more.

Caroline: Aw, honey, darling. Oh, I'm so happy to see you!

Sami: I am thrilled to be with you for the holidays. I'm so glad you're home, grandma. You know, that's what the holidays are all about-- spending them with the people you love.

Caroline: Right.

Johnny: Rafe!

Rafe: Oh! Hey.

Abe: [Sighs] Good job, son.

Theo: I don't like this, daddy.

Abe: What, sweetheart?

Theo: Christmas... without--

Abe: I-I know, I know, I know. Without mommy. Yeah, it's hard, it's hard. But, you know, we're gonna get through it. She would've wanted us to. And we have each other, right? Huh? Hey, buddy. A little bit cold? Yeah. Come on. I think it's time for us to go, huh? Come on, let's go. Yeah.

Kristen: Okay.

Silent night but not for long

Eric: Please! God!

Nicole: Eric?

Eric: No!

Nicole: Oh, my God. What is wrong with you?

Eric: Nicole, what are you doing here?

Nicole: Well, I heard you crying out in your sleep all the way from the rectory.

Eric: I'm fine.

Nicole: No, you're not fine, and this isn't the first time it's happened either. Something is wrong, Eric. Let me help you please. Let me help. Eric. Talk to me, please. Is it a parishioner or-- or something someone said in confidence--

Eric: Nicole, you shouldn't have come in here. I just want you to go.

Nicole: Are you kicking me out?

Eric: I want you to go over to St. Mary's, pick up a few things from father Henry for the Christmas eve mass.

Nicole: Now?

Eric: They're expecting you, Nicole, just do it.

Nicole: Okay.

Abe: Well, EJ, Chad.

EJ: Abraham, Theo. Good to see you, mate.

Theo: Did you come to see mommy too?

EJ: Yes, we did.

Chad: Hey, buddy, gimme a hug. Come here, come on.

Abe: [Laughing] Well, it looks like we all had the same idea today, huh?

Chad: Uh, Abe, why don't I take Theo back to the car and warm up and let you guys catch up a little bit?

Abe: Yeah. Well, thank you, Chad.

Chad: How's that sound, Theo? Wanna come? Come on.

Theo: Bye, uncle EJ!

EJ: Bye. Take care. Love you!

Theo: Love you too!

Chad: Now we'll have a chance for you to tell me what you want for Christmas.

EJ: He's a good kid. You're a good father, Abraham.

Abe: Thank you. I mean, Theo makes it easy. He's a sweet kid. He takes after his mom. You know, I've heard through the grapevine that you're working in the family business again.

EJ: Yeah, I took over at countess Wilhelmina.

Abe: So just when you think you're out, they pull you back in. Is that it?

EJ: No, it was my decision to go back. Mine alone.

Abe: So Kristen's return to Salem had no factor in your decision?

EJ: What if it did?

Abe: Well, I'd be sorry to hear that.

EJ: Why? It has nothing to do with you.

Abe: You're Lexie's brother. Theo's uncle. I'm concerned about you. Your choosing to go back into the family business would mean you're under the influence of the wrong sister.

Eric: [Exhales] Please forgive me, lord. I beg you. I'm not sure if I can go on living with these feelings anymore.

Nicole: Maybe you're getting the silent treatment for a reason. Maybe he's not the one who's supposed to help you.

Eric: And I thought I told you to leave.

Nicole: Well, you did. And now I'm back. Look, Eric, I figured out what's wrong. I know what's going on with you.

Rafe: You have any idea how proud of you guys I am, huh? Donating all those presents to charity today.

Johnny: Yeah. Daddy says it's important to give to people who don't have what we do.

Rafe: Oh, does he? That's, uh-- well, that's the spirit of Christmas, isn't it?

Caroline: How come you're not over there joining in the fun?

Sami: Well, I wanted to give them some time alone with Rafe. They miss him. He always made the holidays really special for the kids.

Caroline: Oh, I bet they're not the only ones who miss him.

Sami: Subtle, grandma. That was really subtle. So, um, why don't you come over with me? I know you'd like to say hi to Rafe too.

Caroline: Oh, well, in a minute. I have to take care of something first.

Sami: Oh--oh, yeah, something very important to take care of. You'll come over after though?

Caroline: Yes.

Rafe: Wow.

Sami: So what's going on here?

Rafe: A little strategizing. I asked them if there was anything special they wanted for Christmas.

Sydney: [Whispering]

Sami: Hmm.

Rafe: Hmm.

Sami: I think you're about to get your answer.

Rafe: Yeah, right? Okay, you two. Out with it. What's at the top of the list, hmm?

Johnny: Sydney wants a penguin. Just like mine and Allie's. I told her we got it from you, mommy.

Sydney: Please can I have a penguin, please?

Rafe: Those laughing penguins are no laughing matter. [Wincing]

Sami: What's wrong with you? What happened?

Rafe: Nothing.

Sami: Rafe, what is that? Oh, my God, you're bleeding.

Rafe: Yeah.

Sami: [Laughs] Well, baby, they were sort of really hard to come by actually.

Kayla: What do you mean you're not coming? Stephanie, it's Christmas. Well, I don't know. That sounds awfully vague. No. No, you don't need to do that. No, I'll be fine, I will. I just--I'll just miss you. Listen, maybe we can talk more about it when you have more time. Okay. I love you, baby. Bye.

Abe: She tried to encourage your...better nature.

EJ: Abraham, there's not a day that goes by when I don't think about her, and I try to honor her memory in the way in which I live my life.

Abe: Really? You know, I'd be touched by that if I didn't know you'd allied yourself with Kristen. You know that woman stands for everything Lexie despised, and you know that.

EJ: That woman, Abraham... is not just my sister, she's Lexie's sister-- and she has changed.

Abe: Yeah, I got that memo.

EJ: I believe it because I've seen the evidence for it.

Abe: Does it occur to you that Kristen is clever and cunning enough to fool everyone, including you?

EJ: Do you know something, Abraham? I didn't think that you were so cynical.

Abe: I'm being real, EJ. Your sister Kristen is the antithesis of goodness, honesty, and integrity. So if you want to honor Lexie's memory... you better find another way. Merry Christmas.

Kristen: Brady black purchased the rare photograph by Samuel Caldwell for $15,000, outbidding a lot of major collectors. Ooh! This should come in very handy.

Eric: You don't know what's going on with me.

Nicole: Yes, I do. And Eric, I'm sorry. I know this can't be easy for you. And I know you certainly didn't do yourself any favors by hiring me to work here.

Eric: Well, okay, what does having you work here have to do with anything?

Nicole: Because, hello! I mean, you weren't struggling with these feeling before I started coming around.

Eric: Feelings?

Nicole: Yeah. I mean-- [Scoffs] I don't wanna make you feel uncomfortable.

Eric: No, no, just say it. Wha-what feelings?

Nicole: Well... being tempted. Okay, I know I'm not so attractive that I'm driving you nutty every day, okay? Seriously, I'm sorry. But I don't have that big of an ego. I-I really don't. I'm just talking about what we used to have. And you know, the way I kinda joke about you being celibate.

Eric: Nicole, I--

Nicole: Eric, really. I am sure there are devoted priests out there who feel a pull towards their past. And it's nothing for you to beat yourself up about.

Eric: [Laughing]

Nicole: What is so--what's so funny?

Eric: Your concern, it's-- it's sweet. But I can guarantee you that it doesn't have anything to do with that. I mean, me being tempted by you at all in any way.

Nicole: Oh. Ow. Okay, you didn't have to oversell your guarantee. You could let a girl down easy.

Eric: No, no, I'm sorry. I mean, you are right about the dreaming and that it wasn't nothing important. I have them a lot. But I wasn't honest with you when I said that I didn't remember what they were about.

Nicole: Hey, um... you can talk to me. You know that, right? Come on, I-- seriously, I just totally embarrassed myself, and you're not gonna say anything? Eric, I really believe that if you talk about it, you'll feel much better.

Eric: Maybe I will.

Eric: Now what I'm about to tell you happened when I was down in the Congo.

Nicole: While you were there as a photographer?

Eric: Yeah. one in my family knows about this.

Nicole: I'm not gonna say anything to anyone. Whatever you tell me is gonna stay right here in this room.

Eric: You know, when I... first got down there, it was almost impossible to get a real feel for the lay of the land while they were under a civil war. My job was to document it. There was a priest there in the village who kinda took me under his wing. Father Ryan.

Nicole: And what did he do?

Eric: Um, he took me around, introduced me to people, and not just the ones with positions of power, but the villagers who...were bearing the brunt of the war. Father Ryan, he was helping them cope. I was inspired by his compassion.

Nicole: He sounds like a great man.

Eric: And then there was these people in this village that were near where I was working, and... there was this one teenager. Her name was Neema. Father Ryan, he introduced us because she was shy. But she was brilliant. I mean, curious. She was fascinated with my camera and all the equipment and talking about how she wanted to be a photographer. I actually still have some of the shots she took. She had real talent.

Nicole: "Had"?

Eric: It wasn't long before the rebels showed up in the village.

Sami: I don't know, sweetie. Johnny and Allie, they got those penguins a long time ago. I'm not even sure if we can find them.

Sydney: I like 'em.

Rafe: All right. But you know what, Sydney? It's not the gift that's the most important thing. It's the person that was giving it to you, and the fact that they were trying to make you happy.

Sami: Rafe. I think your fever broke. I think we won.

Rafe: Thank you. Thanks.

Sami: Do you understand?

Johnny: You should write to Santa. I bet he can find that penguin for you.

Rafe: [Laughing]

Sami: I have an idea. Here. You're the best! All right, so Johnny said he's gonna share his penguin with you.

Rafe: Your kids are really something, you know that?

Sami: Thank you. But I think you had a lot to do with it.

Eric: The rebels, they didn't waste any time. They took control of that village in a matter of hours. They weren't soldiers, they were terrorists.

Nicole: What happened?

Eric: They looted the village. Whatever they didn't take, they set fire to it. They were drinking, celebrating, like it was some great victory, and meanwhile, the people whose lives were just destroyed, were, like, huddled in the street while their homes were in flames.

Nicole: Oh, my God.

Eric: Then it got worse.

Nicole: I can't imagine how.

Eric: The leader of the group, he said, "it's time to make an example of somebody." He grabbed Neema. Some girls wish to grow up to be a princess.

Eric: This man, he was-- he was holding Neema... and he put a gun to her head. Her mother, she started crying and begging for him to let her go. So I s-- I yelled at him, and I said, "stop! These people are innocent. They haven't done anything wrong."

Nicole: Oh, Eric.

Eric: And the guy just smiled. He said, "all right." He said, "anybody in this place, they can just stand up and take Neema's place." I froze. I knew what he was daring me to do.

Nicole: But you were scared.

Eric: Everyone was. Everyone... except father Ryan. He didn't hesitate. He just stood right up, and he said, "take me." Before anyone even knew, that man, he let Neema go, and he put a bullet right through father Ryan's heart. It should've been me. It should've been me.

Johnny: [Growling noises]

Sami: Wow.

Rafe: Yeah.

Sami: So what are you doing, um, you know, for the rest of the day?

Rafe: Me? Oh--

Sami: 'Cause, uh, if you are around, I'd be happy to buy you another hot cocoa, and you could hang out with the kids. They're having a lot of fun seeing you.

Rafe: I feel the same way.

[Phone ringing]

Rafe: Mm. Of course. The station. Hernandez. That's a direct order from the commissioner? Yeah, okay. Well, tell him I'm on it. Sorry.

Sami: Yeah, I'm sure it's work, right? So you have to go. Duty calls.

Rafe: Sure does. Well, maybe another time.

Sami: Maybe.

Rafe: Hot chocolate.

Sami: Yeah.

Rafe: Okay. Hey, little guys. I gotta go. I'll see you soon though, all right?

Johnny: When?

Rafe: When? Well, before Christmas. How's that, huh? Good? Look at that thing. [Growls] Hey...I love you both.

Johnny: Love you too.

Rafe: Okay. Mwah. Caroline.

Caroline: Oh, bye. Bye, dear, bye.

Rafe: Bye.

Sami: [Sighs]

Caroline: What-- what were you two talking about?

Sami: Oh, well, actually it's not what we were talking about, it's what we, uh... didn't talk about.

Caroline: What do you mean?

Sami: I don't know. I don't know, maybe I'm just feeling sentimental 'cause of the holidays, but... I just kept having all these memories of-- of us and all the good times we shared. And I think he was thinking about the same thing.

Kristen: Hello, Chad.

Chad: Kristen. Hi, um... I didn't expect to see you here.

Kristen: Really? Well, Lexie was my sister too.

Chad: Right. I, um-- I was, um--I was going, so--

Kristen: Hey, Chad. Have I done something to make you feel uncomfortable?

Chad: No, no. I mean, honestly, I'm still trying to get used to you being here, you know, being with the family.

Kristen: Yeah. I'm sure it hasn't been too easy for you. For a long time, it was just you and EJ, Lexie, and father, right?

Chad: Yeah, that was on a good day.

Kristen: Well, I hope that my--you know, my attempts at getting to know you haven't been too lame. But I have enjoyed talking with you. I've enjoyed our conversations, and I'd really love to build on that. Actually, um, father was really hoping to talk to you over the holidays.

Chad: Oh, yeah?

Kristen: Yeah. EJ and I are gonna do a video conference with him on Christmas day. And if you could be a part of that, it would make father so happy. If you do care to join us, I mean, maybe we could put-- maybe we could put a little family into our holiday season, for all of us.

Chad: You know, on any other day, this would've been a tougher sell... but okay. I will be there.

Kristen: Thank you.

Chad: I'll see you.

Kristen: Okay.

Chad: Bye.

Kristen: Bye. [Exhales] Hmm.

Sami: But grandma, it's frustrating, you know? I don't know what Rafe wants from me. It seems like we take one step forward and then two steps back. Now we're being thrown together with this whole Gabi's wedding thing very unexpectedly.

Caroline: Unexpectedly? Wait, didn't you volunteer to plan Gabi's wedding? Are you trying to say it had nothing to do with Rafe?

Sami: Okay, I did volunteer. And maybe it did have something to do with Rafe-- subconsciously-- but grandma, it's-- it's just that--

Caroline: What?

Sami: I don't know if I should say it.

Caroline: Try me.

Sami: The truth is...

Caroline: That you still have feelings for EJ.

Sami: I realize I should have my head examined. I mean, everyone I love hates him, including you.

Caroline: Sami, I don't hate anybody. And, uh, I must say that since I came back, EJ seems--I don't know--kind... solicitous.

Sami: I think so too. I mean, he is different, right? He has been different. It is like he's changed.

Caroline: What do you think it is that's changed?

Sami: I don't know, but he is. He's kind and he's been really compassionate. And then the whole thing with helping the kids give away all those presents to charity. It was a selfless thing to do. It's like I'm seeing a whole new side of EJ.

Caroline: Sami, dear, tell me something. Were you hesitant to tell me this because you thought I would judge you about your feelings, I mean, that you care for EJ?

Sami: Well, I didn't think you were gonna respect me for it.

Caroline: Sami, the heart wants what it wants. And sometimes the heart is torn.

Sami: Yes! Yes, that is exactly how I feel--torn. I mean, when I'm sitting with Rafe... it feels like old times, you know? And it feels right, like we were meant to be together. And then, when I'm with EJ, and I see this new side to him, I feel that pull that I've always felt towards him. I don't know what to do, grandma. I just don't.

Caroline: Well, my advice is simple. Just don't do anything stupid.

Sami: Grand--are you saying like I usually do?

Caroline: No, darling. I'm serious, dear. I'm sorry, but... you've been going between these two men for a very long time.

Sami: Feels like forever. But your point is well taken. That this might be my last chance, and I better get it right.

Eric: You know, father Ryan-- he was one of the greatest men that I have ever known. He ministered to those people, he made a difference in their lives. And he sacrificed his own for Neema.

Nicole: What happened after the rebels left? Was--was Neema okay?

Eric: She was traumatized, obviously. She didn't want anything more to do with photography... or me.

Nicole: I am so sorry, Eric.

Eric: Yeah, but she's alive, thanks to father Ryan. He acted. I was hesitant, I was afraid. I was a coward.

Nicole: What? You are not a coward. Don't do this to yourself. You're a good man.

Eric: Did you hear what I said, Nicole? Are you listening? A great man is gone, and I'm here trying to fill his shoes. I'm not a tenth of what that man was, because I'm not a man who stands up without hesitation, without fear. I'm gonna ask you one more time, Nicole. Are you hearing what I'm saying to you?

Nicole: Yes, I am hearing what you're saying. I heard every painful word. But I also know who you are and what you are, and it certainly isn't who you think you are.

Rafe: Yeah, I got the description right here. It's, uh, black and white up and down the front. Height? I'm not exactly sure, but I'm guessing around 12 inches. Yeah, that's right. It's a penguin. Okay. Well, thanks anyway.

EJ: Samantha.

Caroline: Hey.

EJ: Caroline.

Caroline: Ah, good to see you, EJ. Well, I've gotta get back to work, if you'll excuse me.

Sami: Are you okay?

EJ: I just came from visiting Lexie's grave. I mean, I miss her every day, but somehow--

Sami: It's harder at the holidays.

EJ: Yeah. I should go.

Sami: What? You just got here.

EJ: No, it's fine. I don't wanna bring down your Christmas spirit.

Sami: You're not. EJ, why don't you gimme a chance to give you some holiday spirit? Stay here? Guess who's here!

Johnny: Daddy!

EJ: Hey! Oh. Mwah! Good to see you two.

Kayla: Um, so what are you doing for Christmas eve? Eric is celebrating midnight mass.

Abe: Well, you know, we were going to drive to Chicago for the day and see Celeste.

Kayla: But you'll be back for Christmas morning, right?

Abe: Yeah, I think so. You know, I really haven't made any plans yet.

Kayla: Well, don't. I'm gonna make some for you.

Abe: Really? What are you talking about?

Kayla: You'll see.

Chad: Cameron. This is crazy, I was just thinking about you.

Cameron: Yeah?

Chad: Yeah. I was, um--I was at Lexie's grave. I was, you know--I was thinking how we share a sister but we hardly ever see each other.

Cameron: Well, maybe we can do something to change that.

Chad: That sounds good. Yeah, why don't we? Why don't we do something? Why don't we--why don't we grab a couple beers, watch a game?

Cameron: I'd be down.

Chad: Yeah?

Cameron: But are you sure this isn't just the holidays talking?

Chad: So what if it is? Look, I'm down if you're down. All right?

Cameron: I am.

Chad: Cool.

Cameron: And maybe you can tell me a little bit more about our sister.

Chad: Absolutely. I'd like that a lot, Cameron.

Nicole: I understand the reason you feel responsible for father Ryan, but you can't do this to yourself. I mean, the fact that you were willing to sacrifice your life for someone else, the fact that you're still so tortured-- because while you were making a difficult decision, father Ryan already stepped in. Don't you get it, Eric? That sets you apart from all of us. You are a good man. You know what? I'm gonna venture out to say you're a great man. And I know what you're made of, and I know what is in your heart. And you wanna know what else I know? If you really believe that you are doing God's work, then you have to know that this all happened for a reason. Maybe... just maybe you're here to do something that father Ryan couldn't, just like the way he was there for Neema when she needed him.

Eric: Thank you. Thank you for listening. But I think I just wanna be alone right now. 2@

Father Tobias: Father Eric?

Eric: Oh! Father Tobias. Sorry, I didn't see you or hear you come in.

Father Tobias: Is everything all right?

Eric: For the first time in a long time, it just might be.

Sister Annabel: Thank you. Hello, Nicole. It's nice to see you.

Nicole: You too, sister Annabel. How's it going?

Sister Annabel: Oh, very well. Even people who are struggling have been making donations, wanting to do whatever they can for people in need.

Nicole: Amen to that, huh?

Sister Annabel: Mm-hmm.

EJ: "And the Christmas bear was so happy for his new stuffing, and he couldn't believe that Santa had known all along what he wanted most of all."

Sami: Don't say it. I can tell what you're thinking.

Caroline: Good. Uh, kids, you know the cookies we decorated? I think they're ready. Oh, come on. Let's check, huh?

EJ: Thank you. That was exactly what I needed.

Sami: Well, you don't have to thank me, you should thank the kids. But you don't have to do that either, because they were just being themselves. They were really happy to spend time with you. But then, they always were. Merry Christmas, EJ.

EJ: Merry Christmas.

[Kids running]

Johnny: Daddy, can you read us another story?

EJ: Yes, I can! Come on, then, jump in. Okay. Let's see.

Rafe: You are gonna make a little girl named Sydney very happy, my friend. Very happy.
