Episode #11970 ~ Eric Offers Nicole a Job; Caroline & Bo Return; Maggie Tries to Stop Daniel's Treatment

Provided By Suzanne

Brady: Thank you. Thank you for not involving my father.

[Phone ringing]

Kristen: It's him, calling me back. Hello, John.

John: Hey. You called me?

Kristen: Yeah, I sure did.

John: Everything all right?

Kristen: [Cries out]

John: Kristen?

[Phone ringing]

Daniel: Hey, Jennifer.

Jennifer: Hey. I, uh-- I just got off the phone with dr. Lewis.

Daniel: What, the hand specialist? That Lewis?

Jennifer: Yeah. And, listen, he said he is willing to let you participate in the clinical trial for his new treatment.

Daniel: Well, that's quick. How did you manage that?

Jennifer: Well, it took a little arm twisting.

Daniel: Which I'm sure you, uh, did in the nicest possible way. Um, when, uh-- when can I see him?

Jennifer: Daniel, that's the best part. He wants to see you today.

Daniel: You're kidding.

Jennifer: Listen, by tonight, that tremor in your hands might be history.

Eric: Hey, what is all this?

Sister Margaret: Well, you asked for the parish's quarterly financial activity, father.

Eric: Yes, I did, sister Margaret, but I was kind of hoping that it would come on one piece of paper, kind of like a spreadsheet.

Sister Margaret: I'm sure I don't know anything about something like that.

Eric: Any progress in finding a new secretary?

Sister Margaret: No new applicants. Can you believe it, father? In this economy?

Eric: Yeah, who could resist a job like this?

[Footsteps approaching]

Nicole: Hi. I brought you some coffee since you've been so nice about letting me hang out here.

Eric: Thank you.

Nicole: You sure you don't mind letting me hang around?

Eric: I enjoy your company.

Nicole: Good, 'cause you're the only one. Let me give you some advice. If you want to be well-liked in this town, do not try to railroad Jennifer Horton.

Eric: You know, I think I know a way to get your mind off your problems. Why don't you come and work here?

Nicole: Me? Working in a-- in a church? [Laughing]

Kayla: Oh, hey. Reinforcements are here.

Hope: Hey, guys.

Roman: Yeah, you go pick up Ciara. We're going to take care of everything here.

Hope: Actually, you're off the hook.

Kayla: What do you mean? I thought that Gabi and Nick were still out, right?

Hope: Well, someone showed up with a lot of experience, and, uh, was looking for a job.

Kayla: What?

Roman: What, you hired somebody?

Hope: I think she's going to work out, too. Although, I have to admit, she's a little bossy. Maybe a lot.

Caroline: Why not? You want something done right, you've got to do it yourself.

Roman: Oh, come on. Ma!

Kayla: I don't believe it. What are you doing here? Oh, God.

Kristen: Thank you so much for calling me back, John. I wanted to talk to you about what happened today. There's something you need to know.

John: Yeah, what now?

Daniel: So, uh, this is, uh-- this is happening.

Jennifer: Well, dr. Lewis said you'll have to sign a release form, just so that you understand the risks that are involved. Daniel?

Daniel: Uh, yeah.

Jennifer: Listen, is this too fast? Do you not want to go through with this?

Nicole: [Laughs]

Eric: Would you like water or something?

Nicole: I'm fine. I'm sorry. It's just I haven't laughed like that in since I cannot remember. I just-- I kept seeing myself wearing that getup they have. What is that thing called again?

Eric: A habit. I'm not asking you to become a nun. It's the parish. They're looking for a secretary.

Nicole: A secretary?

Eric: Yeah, how's your typing?

Nicole: Sucks.

Eric: Your shorthand?

Nicole: Nonexistent.

Eric: Great. Well, the pay isn't really all that great, so--

Nicole: Like a living wage, you mean?

Eric: Exactly. But there are benefits.

Nicole: Oh, I can't wait.

Eric: Well, we would pay for your room and board, and you would get out of that hotel that you hate.

Nicole: Mm-hmm. And where will I go?

Eric: In the convent.

Nicole: [Laughs] That's-- are you making that up? Are you trying to make me laugh again?

Eric: No, I'm serious.

Nicole: You want me to live with a bunch of nuns?

Eric: Well, there won't be a lack of company.

Nicole: Okay. You've had your little joke, there, father.

Eric: Seriously. The priests reside next door. We'll be able to see each other all the time. So what do you say?

John: Oh, I know what happened today.

Kristen: Nope. There's more.

John: More? Yeah, like what?

Kristen: Brady came by today and he, um, he apologized... said that he realizes he was wrong about me. He was incredibly sorry, because he'd been so mean to me, and horrible, and he was a complete and total jerk.

John: And that's the reason that you called me? To tell me that Brady apologized?

Kristen: Well, I thought maybe you had something to do with it, so I just wanted to say thank you.

John: I can't take any credit for what my son does, but I'm glad that it happened. I'd like to think that we can all coexist peacefully.

Kristen: Yeah, me too. Well, I won't keep you. I'll talk to you later, John.

John: Yeah. So long. She called to tell me that Brady apologized for treating her so badly. It seems that he has changed his mind about her.

Marlena: Uh, yes, I know. He--he told me that. So it appears that Kristen hasn't lost her touch.

John: So is that why you were so upset earlier? Joy's Christmas shopping and was looking at best buy

Nicole: You know, as hard as it is to pass up living with a bunch of nuns who have taken a vow of chastity, next to my ex-lover, who is now celibate, I am going to make the difficult choice to let that opportunity go by.

Eric: There's not going to be a lot of opportunity for you in Salem. So what are you going to do about money?

Nicole: I have savings left over from my previous jobs as an on-camera personality and campaign manager. Oh, and you would be surprised at how much money that EJ is willing to fork over just to be divorced from me.

Eric: I'm not saying you have to be a church secretary for life.

Nicole: Well, that's a relief.

Eric: But it would help fill your days.

Nicole: Okay, I'll-- I'll think about it.

Eric: Thank you.

Nicole: Mm-hmm.

Eric: There is something else that you're going to have to do to improve the quality of your life.

Nicole: I can't wait to hear.

Eric: You're going to have to make things right with Daniel Jonas.

Jennifer: Uh, Daniel, are you still there?

Daniel: Uh, yeah. Yeah, I'm still here.

Jennifer: Listen, I can cancel the appointment.

Daniel: [Exhales] Uh, no. Don't do that, don't. I'm-- I made my decision and I'm going to commit to doing it. If this works out, it'll be worth the risk.

Jennifer: Okay, then I'll see you soon.

Daniel: Thanks.

Abigail: See who soon?

Jennifer: Uh, Daniel.

Abigail: Oh. Really?

Jennifer: Yeah. I made an appointment for him.

Abigail: With the hand guy?

Jennifer: Yeah.

Abigail: Daniel means a lot to you, doesn't he, mom?

Jennifer: It was, uh, just an act of friendship.

Abigail: Right. Well, he is lucky to have your friendship. To have you in his life.

Jennifer: Yeah.

[Knock at door]

Daniel: Hey, Maggie.

Maggie: Can I come in?

Daniel: Well, I-- okay, sure.

Maggie: Uh, read this.

Daniel: No, I-- you know, I don't have time.

Maggie: Uh, maybe you should make the time. See, it's my online research about the side effects of this treatment that Jennifer suggested for you.

Daniel: Look, I know all of this. I do. I'm the one who told you about it.

Maggie: Yes, you did. And--and I realize now that, you know, I didn't read enough about it--about the risks. This treatment can turn certain kinds of tremors into a permanent condition.

Daniel: Mm-hmm, yeah. Yeah, in a-- in a small percentage of cases, yeah.

Maggie: Daniel, just read the stuff.

Daniel: I can't, really. I'm on my way to the hospital to meet with dr. Lewis right now.

Maggie: You're meeting with him?

Daniel: I am.

Maggie: Already?

Daniel: Yes, I'm getting an injection in about an hour, so--

Maggie: You are kidding. What is the rush?

Daniel: Because he's in town.

Maggie: So what?

Daniel: So I might not get another chance to do this.

Maggie: But--

Daniel: Okay, Maggie, it's all set up. Jennifer arranged it. My mind is made up.

John: Doc?

Marlena: Hmm?

John: Are you upset because Brady apologized to Kristen?

Marlena: Well, sure. Sure. You know, Brady has been my ally in all of this.

John: I keep trying to tell you, honey, this isn't a war.

Marlena: And I see I can't convince you that you're wrong about that. So all I can hope is...

John: [Sighs]

Marlena: That Kristen has finally realized that she needs to keep her distance from me, and from everybody that I love.

Kristen: Thank you.

John: Yep, me too.

Kristen: I told you that I just wanted to make peace.

Brady: So you're going to let this go.

Kristen: Well, you heard me on the phone just now with John. After what Marlena did, breaking in here, looking at my personal files, I had every right to expose her, but I'm trying so hard, you know? I'm trying to be the bigger person, take the high road.

Brady: I owe you one.

Kristen: Well, not really, 'cause you risked your life to protect me from those muggers. So I guess, um, we're kind of even, right? Sort of?

Roman: Ma, I cannot believe you're home.

Caroline: Well, believe it.

Kayla: Yeah, you know what? I just talked to your doctor. He said he was going to think about letting you come home and do your treatment here.

Caroline: Well, it turns out that I was an "a" student at the Alzheimer's clinic.

Kayla: Of course you were.

Caroline: So Bo and I convinced the doctor that sooner was better than later.

Kayla: Well, what about your memory lapses and all that? How's that going?

Caroline: Well, I still have them once in a while, but not so often. Sweetheart, I-- I want to thank you for that clinic and that doctor.

Kayla: Stop.

Caroline: Thank you.

Roman: Okay, well, where's my brother?

Hope: Picking up his daughter.

Kayla: Oh, I bet that's one happy girl.

Hope: Oh, she's not the only one. Everyone is finally back home, where they belong.

Jennifer: Hey, aunt Maggie.

Maggie: Hi. We need to talk.

Jennifer: Okay, yeah. Come on in. I'm guessing this is about Daniel, and, uh, he told you about the injections.

Maggie: Yes. And in spite of the fact that, if it fails, this treatment stops any other treatment from working. See, when you and I talked about this, you left that little part out.

Jennifer: I know. But I-I made it clear to him, and he still wants to go ahead with this.

Maggie: This afternoon. Because you pulled some strings to make it happen.

Jennifer: But I didn't insist on it, and if he wanted to back off, I would be fine with that.

Maggie: Since when has my son denied you anything?

Jennifer: Aunt Maggie, this is not for me.

Maggie: You know, after this mess with Nicole, Daniel admitted to me that he still loves you, and that he told you that, and I think you're guilty because you can't say you love him, too.

Jennifer: That's not true. That's not why I'm doing this.

Maggie: Isn't it? Haven't you decided to make it up to him by giving him back the other love of his life, the ability to do surgery?

Jennifer: Is that so bad?

Maggie: It is if you can't guarantee that this experiment will work. Jennifer, you are risking my son's entire future to quiet your guilty conscience. Now I demand that you talk him out of this insanity before it's too late.

Nicole: I told you, I-I already tried talking to Daniel, and I couldn't go through with it.

Eric: You faced Jennifer Horton. How could this be worse?

Nicole: I don't love Jennifer Horton. I don't even like Jennifer Horton.

Eric: And you still love Daniel.

Nicole: He-- he made me feel like I had value. And if-- what if I go to him and-- and he says he can't forgive me?

Eric: You may not have a future with Daniel. But you still have a future. Until you've told him that you're sincerely sorry, I don't think you'll be able to move forward in a meaningful way.

Nicole: You know what? You're right. I need to try talking to Daniel again.

Eric: There's no time like the present.

Nicole: Wow, you're so pushy. Okay, um, wish me luck?

Eric: Absolutely.

John: I ran into Eric earlier, and he said you canceled a lunch. What happened?

Marlena: Uh, well, you know, I just, I, uh-- I just got all jammed up and... I should go to the rectory and apologize to him.

John: Okay.

Marlena: Yeah. John. You know how much I love you, don't you? This--this-- the thing with Kristen, it, um-- we just can't let it come between us. Not again. Not ever. Please.

John: It won't. I won't let it.

Kristen: So, you did your damage control for Marlena. And, uh, why are you still here?

Brady: I don't know.

Kristen: Oh. Well, I doubt if this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, but it is kind of nice to be in the same room with you without having you attack my character. You know, you can be a little scary.

Brady: I work on that for hours every day in front of the mirror. Listen, uh, Kristen, since we're going to be on this church board together, it might be a good idea if we learned how to get along. You know, for everyone's benefit.

Kristen: Yeah. I agree.

Brady: Good.

Kristen: So you have to leave now.

Brady: Yeah.

Kristen: I have things to do.

Brady: Of course you do.

Kristen: And I spent all day in a hospital room.

Brady: You should go.

Kristen: [Gasps] Ow.

Brady: What is it? What? What's wrong?

Kristen: I just got a sharp pain when I turned the doorknob. It still kind of hurts.

Brady: Yeah, you got a souvenir from your mud wrestling match with Marlena, right? That's very nice.

Kristen: Thank you.

Brady: It looks bruised. Let me see it.

Kristen: No, that's okay.

Brady: Let me see.

Kristen: No, no, no, no, ah.

Brady: It looks swollen.

Daniel: Nicole. What, uh-- what are you doing here?

Nicole: Selling vacuums door to door? I-- I actually came to talk to you. Do you have a minute?

Jennifer: I want to help him do this. And the risk that you are talking about is in such a small percentage of the cases. And do you know this is the only treatment that can allow him to be a surgeon again? So I can't even believe that-- that you would want him to just accept the status quo.

Maggie: All I want is for Daniel to wait until the odds are better. And if you were thinking clearly, you would agree with me.

Jennifer: Believe it or not, I am thinking clearly. And how Daniel feels about me, that is irrelevant. He is doing the right thing.

Maggie: I'm sorry. I'm sorry, I can't accept that. And if you can't see that you pushed Daniel into this, then you are being dangerously naive. But if you won't stop him, I guess it's up to me.

Jennifer: Aunt Maggie. Are--are we okay?

Maggie: I love you, honey. I always will. I just wish that you'd butt out of my son's life.

Nicole: Thank you for not turning me away.

Daniel: I don't have a lot of time.

Nicole: I-it won't take long. I just-- I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. [Sighs] Boy, that was inadequate. I am so sorry for accusing Jennifer of killing my baby. I was a desperate, grieving woman, and that doesn't begin to excuse it--

Daniel: Okay, Nicole, you don't have to do this.

Nicole: Yes, I do, I do. I do. I had to say it to Jennifer, and I need to say it to you. [Sighs] You were so good to me, and I did nothing but pay you back with lies and deceit, because I thought it was the only way I could hang on to you. And you have every right to hate me for the rest of your life. I just hope someday that you... can find it in your heart to forgive me for what I did.

[Knock at door]

Eric: Hey.

Marlena: Hi, honey.

Eric: What's this?

Marlena: Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. [Laughs] Still your favorite, I see.

Eric: Yes.

Marlena: Good.

Eric: [Sniffs] Mm. You want one?

Marlena: Yes, I'm starved.

Eric: Well, that's what you get for ditching me for lunch.

Marlena: Oh, honey, I'm-- I'm sorry about that.

Eric: Is everything okay?

Marlena: Oh, sure. Yeah, everything's fine. No. No, my life seems to be spinning out of control, and every time I try to fix it, I just make it worse. Sorry you asked?

Kristen: I'm sure this is going to be a lot better by tomorrow, so--

Brady: Yeah.

Kristen: You gotta go.

Brady: I gotta go.

Kristen: I got somebody I have to see, yeah.

Brady: What? Your, uh--

Kristen: Purse.

Brady: Purse.

John: Hey, kid. How you feeling?

Brady: Hey. Hey, dad. I'm good.

John: Good. No headaches, double vision, anything like that?

Brady: Healthy.

John: You looked like you were thinking about something pretty serious there. Look, I, uh, I know what happened between you and Kristen.

Brady: How could-- oh, oh, you-- that I've let her off the hook.

John: Yeah, is there something else?

Brady: No. No, no, no. I just-- I just figured it was the right thing to do. I mean, how many times have I gotten a second chance at life? I hope I'm not making a mistake about her. I mean, she is not the easiest woman to read, dad.

John: That's a fact. But, you know, forgiving her for what she did in the past doesn't mean you have to deal with her in the present.

[Cell phone chimes]

Brady: [Sighs] Oh, that's a missed call from Eric. He's probably wondering why I left like a bat out of hell out of the pub earlier today.

John: It hasn't exactly been an ordinary day, has it?

Brady: No, it hasn't. Listen, I better, uh-- I better explain this to him. I'll see you later, okay?

John: All right, kid. Take care.

Marlena: I just never thought that John and I would be in this position ever again.

Eric: I understand why you would be completely wary of Kristen.

Marlena: You do? Then you're the only person in this town who does.

[Knock at door]

Marlena: [Gasps] Oh--

Kristen: Hi, I'm sorry. I should have waited outside. I do have church business to discuss with you, father, but I'm sure your mother needs you more than I do.

Marlena: I have to go, anyway. Please, come to supper with John and me very soon.

Eric: Sounds great.

Marlena: Good. Bye.

Kristen: Bye, now, Marlena. It's kind of embarrassing. No matter how hard I try, she just refuses to trust me.

Eric: As I remember it, she has every reason not to.

Nicole: You're not saying anything. Should I leave?

Daniel: I, um-- I accept your apology.

Nicole: Oh. Oh, thank goodness. Don't blow it, Nicole. Knowing when to leave is half the battle. What's this?

Daniel: It's, uh, it's information on a new treatment.

Nicole: For tremors of the hand.

Daniel: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I'm meeting today with the doctor who developed that.

Nicole: How did you arrange it?

Daniel: It's, uh, Jennifer. She arranged it.

Nicole: Oh. I see.

Daniel: Yeah, and there-- there are some risks involved, but if this works, Nicole, I could be a surgeon again.

Nicole: Oh, you-- you've wanted that more than anything. That's--that's great. And Jennifer made that happen for you. God, why don't I ever think of doing stuff like that? She's still looking out for you. I'm--I'm glad.

Daniel: She's a-- she's a good friend. Okay, I, uh, I need to-- to get going.

Nicole: Okay. Um, when do you do your treatment?

Daniel: Oh, I, in, uh-- you know, like-- it's just an injection, but, uh, about an hour.

Nicole: And--and when do you know if it works?

Daniel: Well, if it works, it's going to work quickly, and I'll know, um, today. Later today.

Nicole: Wow. Well, I-I wish you-- I wish you the best of luck.

Daniel: Thank you.

Nicole: I'll see you around.

Daniel: You will.

Nicole: God, he said they're just friends. Is Jennifer keeping him at arm's length? What? What is she, stupid? I'm going to find out for sure. Ashley's got her Christmas list --

Kristen: You never were one to beat around the bush. I guess the priesthood hasn't changed you.

Eric: Have you changed?

Kristen: [Gasps] Oh, yes. I hope so. You do believe in redemption, don't you?

Eric: If you're sincerely sorry for the things you've done, and you have a firm resolve to live a different sort of life, I truly believe you deserve to be forgiven.

Kristen: Thank you. I believe God has forgiven me. But Marlena? I don't think she ever will.

Eric: I'm sure you're going to understand, it's going to take a lot of time, a lot of hard work for you to prove yourself to her.

Kristen: Of course. I understand completely what I need to do now.

Nicole: I told your mother how sorry I am, and I realized today it's not enough, that I need to say something to you--

Abigail: I don't want to hear it, Nicole.

Nicole: Okay, look. I know what I did to your mother was horrible.

Abigail: Yeah, it was.

Nicole: Especially while you were grieving for your dad.

Abigail: We still are, Nicole, so--

Nicole: Okay, wait-- when I was living here, I-I would hear your mom cry herself to sleep.

Abigail: That didn't seem to stop you from trying to ruin her life, did it?

Nicole: I know. But I really am concerned for her. And I just-- I want to know if she's still doing it. Is she still so lonely?

Abigail: [Scoffs] The only thing that I'm going to tell you about my mother, Nicole, is that she's a very strong woman, and she is trying to recover from losing my father, and also what you have done to her. And someday, if she decides that she wants to make a life with another man--maybe dr. Jonas?-- Then she has my complete support. Does that answer your question? [Slam] [Sighs]

Nicole: As a matter of fact, it does. Jennifer and Daniel are not together. Well, what do you know?

Maggie: Still filling out the consent forms. That means that you haven't, uh, had the injection yet.

Daniel: Okay, Maggie, I have the education and the experience to make an informed decision. I'm also man enough to handle this not working out.

Maggie: That's all absolutely true. But I'm old enough to know that it never hurts to sleep on something for a night. Why can't you wait until the drug has gone through more trials? I mean, why do you have to be a guinea pig?

Daniel: Maggie, I am a surgeon, and I will do whatever it takes to be one again. Whatever it takes. I'm sorry, but I have made up my mind on this.

Kristen: I was so certain that I put the check in here. It was from DiMera enterprises for the school building fund.

Eric: Father, I'm sorry, but I have a family obligation to attend.

Father Tobias: Oh, go ahead. I can wait till ms. DiMera locates the check.

Eric: I'm sure I'll speak to you again, Kristen.

Kristen: Okay, Eric. I'll see you. Oh, I mean father. Sorry. I was so certain it was in here. You know, I must have left it at my hotel. Can I get it to you tomorrow?

Father Tobias: [Laughs] Today, tomorrow. What's the difference?

Kristen: I'm not usually so spaced out. I've had a very unsettling day. I'm so sorry.

Father Tobias: Is there anything I can do?

Kristen: Um, actually, maybe. Yeah, do you have a little time now?

Father Tobias: Of course.

Kristen: Okay. It's been an awfully long time since I've made a confession. Would you be willing to hear mine now? My doctor told me calcium

Caroline: Looks like Salem wasn't exactly boring while I was away.

Roman: No, but it wasn't the same without you, I guarantee you that.

Caroline: Nicole walker, up to her old tricks.

Roman: Yeah. She put Jennifer through hell.

Caroline: Right after Jack. Oh, God. Poor Jennifer.

Roman: Yeah. It was rough on her. Well, ma, you know what? I gotta get going. But, uh, I will see you later.

Caroline: Yes, you will. Now, take care, roman. God. Poor Daniel.

[Door closes]

Eric: Hi, grandma. Grandma? Is something wrong? Do you not know me? Were the doctors wrong?

Nicole: Eric, it's Nicole. I've decided to take your lousy job. And it gives me a reason to stay in Salem. And, look, thank you for nudging me to talk to Daniel. It was the right thing to do, and it put my life back into perspective. Thanks.

Jennifer: I'm going to go check on Daniel. Excuse me.

Abigail: Okay. I don't like you being mad at mom.

Maggie: I don't either, Abigail. But there's a lot at stake here. If your mother's wrong, Daniel's life will be ruined.

Jennifer: Hey.

Daniel: Hey, hey.

Jennifer: How's it going?

Daniel: It, uh, it's going. Yeah, you know, I can't thank you enough for arranging all of this.

Jennifer: Yeah, I just-- I just pray that it works.

Daniel: Me too.

Dr. Lewis: Dr. Jonas? I'm Edward Lewis.

Daniel: Hi. Well, I-I can't tell you how happy I am to meet you, doctor. Uh, this is Jennifer Horton.

Dr. Lewis: Oh. Nice to meet you in person.

Jennifer: Oh, same here.

Dr. Lewis: I've just been going over your test results to pinpoint where to place the injection. Hold out both hands, please.

Daniel: Yep.

Dr. Lewis: Okay. And you've signed the release forms?

Daniel: I have. I understand the risks involved.

Dr. Lewis: Then you're ready to proceed?

Marlena: Oh. Brady must have persuaded Kristen not to say anything, or else he wouldn't be in such a good mood. Wonder why she went along with it. She must have been dying to expose me. So what is she up to now?

Father Tobias: Of course I'll hear your confession. Would you like to "hit the box," as some of my parishioners say?

Kristen: No, that's okay. A face to face confession would be fine. Oh, thank you. Yeah, there's just something that's been weighing on me quite heavily.

Father Tobias: Go ahead.

Kristen: Oh, boy. I'm not sure if you know about me, but I've done some pretty terrible things in my life. And, uh, there's one thing that stands out, that I regret the most. You know what troubles me? I'm afraid that I'm about to make the same mistake again.
