Brady: You're still in love with Jennifer, aren't you?
Daniel: It'd be a lot simpler if I wasn't.
Brady: Daniel, you're gonna need to take a step back from Nicole.
Daniel: Oh, no, I can't. She has got real-life stuff to deal with. And as long as she and the baby need me, I am in.
Nicole: Here go, kiddo. Showtime.
Daniel: [Clears throat]
Nicole: Good morning.
Daniel: Hey. Uh, you're--you're up early.
Nicole: Yeah, I've been up for a while. I couldn't sleep.
Daniel: Yeah? What's all this?
Nicole: I was doing some research online last night.
Daniel: Research? What, about the baby?
Nicole: Daniel, I-- I think I found a way to take control of my destiny.
Maggie: I'm sorry. I should've called first.
Jennifer: Aunt Maggie, you never have to call to come see me.
Abigail: Aunt Maggie!
Maggie: Hi, Abigail.
Abigail: I wish I wasn't leaving. I feel like I haven't see you in forever.
Maggie: I know--me too.
Abigail: Have you heard from Mel?
Maggie: She called me the moment she landed in Barcelona.
Jennifer: Oh, good. How's she doing?
Maggie: She's better. Um, I think she needed this trip.
Abigail: Well, if you hear from her, will you please tell her that I'm thinking of her and I miss her?
Maggie: I will, Abigail. Thank you for asking. Yeah.
Abigail: I have to go. Love you.
Jennifer: Love you, honey.
Maggie: Oh, she's so cute.
Jennifer: Oh, do you hear that?
Maggie: I hear what?
Jennifer: The glorious sound of silence.
Maggie: Oh, I thought it was awfully quiet around here.
Jennifer: Yes. Nicole, my houseguest from hell, is gone.
Maggie: So she just left?
Jennifer: Well, I kicked her out.
Maggie: I can't say that I'm surprised. [Chuckles] I didn't come here, though, to talk about Nicole.
Maggie: I came here to ask you one simple thing.
Jennifer: Yeah, of course. Anything for you, Aunt Maggie.
Maggie: Please stop hurting my son.
EJ: I called you here, Mr. Brown, because the depositions that my brother and Mr. Fallon gave have proven to be problematic, to say the least. You're the best criminal attorney that I know. You should make those depositions disappear. I didn't work this hard to have everything undone by a couple of bloody children.
[Rapid knocking on door]
Rafe: All right, all right! I'm coming. Man, loud. What?
Gabi: Rafe, it's over. It's all over.
Chad: Sami, what are you--
Sami: We need to talk.
Chad: Uh, about what? What are you--what did I do?
Sami: It's not about you. It's about your brother. I know something's going on.
Chad: Uh, there's nothing--
Sami: Don't lie to me. Chad, I know something's happening, and I know it involves Gabi.
Chad: Okay, we're not having this conversation.
Sami: I overheard enough of your fight with your brother to know he promised you something that he is not delivering on. Chad, he's playing you, and I'd like to offer you the opportunity to beat him at his own game.
Gabi: I tried to call you, but it was going to voice mail.
Rafe: All right, just hold on a second. Slow down, okay? What's over?
Gabi: Everything, all of it. Chad's never gonna hurt me anymore.
Rafe: Uh, no. He can still testify against you, you know. Oh, and by the way, if this thing goes to court--
Gabi: No, no, no, no. That's it. It's not going to court. Look, Chad struck a deal, okay? And he's never, ever gonna tell anybody about my connection to Melanie's kidnapping or Andrew or anything like that. You don't have to protect me anymore, big brother.
EJ: Every single word in those depositions is a lie.
Brown: How do you know that?
EJ: Because the first one clears my brother of a crime that I know he committed-- a brutal attack.
Brown: But wasn't the victim the one that gave that deposition--Nick Fallon?
EJ: Yes, but it's fraudulent. It was a quid pro quo for the one that my brother gave him.
Brown: In which he swore he had no knowledge of Gabi Hernandez being complicit in Melanie Jonas' kidnapping.
EJ: Right. When, in fact, he could've nailed--he, in fact, was the only person who could've nailed her.
Brown: But now his word isn't worth one thin dime.
EJ: That is why I need you to work your magic. Find me a loophole.
Sami: So EJ told you that he was gonna help you get Melanie back.
Chad: It doesn't matter.
Sami: Why not?
Chad: Because he can't, okay? It's too late now. Melanie is gone. She left, okay? Returned my ring. It's over.
Sami: Okay, what does this have to do with EJ? What's his angle, and--and where does Gabi fit in?
Chad: Look, I'm telling you, Sami, you're better off just... not getting involved, okay?
Sami: And if you're smart, you're gonna want me involved here, Chad.
Sami: Because I know how EJ helps people, all right? I know how he keeps those kinds of promises, and you want to know what my theory is?
Chad: Hmm. Uh, no, not really, because I've had enough, okay? I think it's time for you to go.
Sami: EJ says he's going to help you, but the only person he really helps is himself. And if my theory is accurate, don't you think you should know about it? Do you have a rolling pin?
Abigail: Oh, sorry.
No, my fault.
Abigail: Is that the latest Sue Grafton book?
Yes. I'm kind of addicted.
Abigail: Oh, my gosh, me too. I'm just finishing the last one. It's so good.
Keeps me occupied in between my shifts.
Abigail: Oh, do you work at the hospital?
Mm-hmm, a surgical intern.
Abigail: Wow, that's impressive. You look so young.
I don't feel like it. Wait, here comes my date now. Hey, you.
Jennifer: Uh, yeah, things have been a little bit tense between me and Daniel lately.
Maggie: Because of Nicole?
Jennifer: Uh, yeah, because she's taking advantage of him, and Daniel is letting her.
Maggie: Well, he considers her a friend.
Jennifer: Aunt Maggie, the last thing that that woman is is his friend. She is manipulative and deceptive, and she's using him.
Maggie: And that bothers you.
Jennifer: Doesn't it bother you?
Maggie: Jennifer, you have to know how much your opinion of Daniel means to him.
Jennifer: No, aunt Maggie, I don't, actually. It used to, but not since Nicole came around, no.
Maggie: That's not true. I mean, you see, I just happen to know. Call it a mother's instinct. But when you tell Daniel that-- that you're disappointed in him and that you don't respect his decisions, it rips his heart to shreds.
Nicole: I had this nightmare that EJ had proven the baby was his, and he--he came, and he took him away from me, and when I woke up, my heart was beating so hard.
Daniel: And you couldn't go back to sleep, huh?
Nicole: No. Daniel, if EJ gets the DNA test that he wants, this could all be over. And even if we--even if we could stop that, Rafe can't keep pretending that he's the father forever.
Daniel: Yeah? Well, what's the alternative?
Nicole: I, um... I could tell the truth.
Daniel: And admit EJ is the father?
Nicole: That would be one way to go, but then what would my option be?
Nicole: So, uh... I went online, and I found this. Daniel, I think it's the answer that I've been looking for. There's this law in Utah.
Nicole: Yes. There's a way to work the system where the state will deny the biological father all--almost all parental rights. What? What? Are you--what's that look?
Daniel: Okay, you want to move to Utah by yourself? No, Nicole, that is insane. No, I'm not gonna let you do that.
Nicole: I know it sounds impulsive.
Daniel: Sounds impulsive?
Nicole: But that dream I had of EJ taking my son away from me--it was so intense and so real, Daniel. I can't let that happen.
Daniel: How much of this did you actually read?
Nicole: What do you mean?
Daniel: Because if you want this to work the way you're hoping, you need to do more than just move to Utah.
Nicole: I know. I have to live there for a while.
Daniel: No, no, Nicole. According to this, if you want to minimize EJ's involvement, your child is going to need an adoptive father.
Nicole: Oh, my God, Daniel... would you be willing to adopt? Because I wouldn't know what to say, and I know it's asking a lot...
Daniel: Okay, Nicole, I--
Nicole: And I know you would have to make a lifetime commitment to me and to the baby, but it would solve everything, and you would be as much of a father as EJ would, legally.
Daniel: Nicole, I--
Nicole: No, I know it's a sacrifice. I do, I do, but, look, you know, EJ--he could still try to take your license away if he finds out that you helped fix the DNA results. So you're better off living somewhere else. And it would be a lot harder for him to do that if you were living in another state.
Daniel: Okay, Nicole, you need to stop, 'cause you're getting way ahead of yourself.
Nicole: But it could work. Daniel, it could work.
Daniel: Okay, no, no, no, no. No, we can't, you c-- listen, listen. [Stammers] It could. Perhaps it could, but I think moving, leaving town has got to be our last resort.
Daniel: Okay, okay.
Nicole: You're right. It's just that that... that dream and everything else that's going on, I guess it's just driving me crazy.
Daniel: I know it is. I know it is, and I know you're scared, but, I mean, for us to just pack up and move west... I don't know. I mean, my mother's here, and my practice...
Nicole: I know.
Daniel: Is right here.
Nicole: I know. I know how devoted you are to Maggie.
Daniel: Look, besides, you know, there are plenty of other ways this could all play out.
Nicole: [Scoffs] That was a stupid idea. I know I have a lot of those.
Daniel: No, listen. Listen to me. I made a promise to you that I will protect you and that baby, and I am going to stick by that. You have my word.
Nicole: I know I do. And I'm more grateful than you can imagine.
Daniel: Okay, I got to-- I got to, um--I got to run to work, all right? So, um, you're gonna-- you're gonna be okay?
Nicole: Yeah, sure, I'll be-- I'll be fine.
Daniel: Great. Well, I will, um--I will see you later, and then we'll, um-- we'll look for a place for you to stay, okay?
Daniel: We'll figure this out. Okay.
Nicole: Well, kiddo, it was worth a shot. Now I'm just gonna have to find some other way to keep Daniel away from Jennifer. How hard can it be?
[Cell phone beeping]
Nicole: Oh, man. Oh, that's right. We have an appointment with Dr. Knapf today. [Chuckles] I don't know about you, kiddo, but I need some retail therapy. Maybe we could, uh-- maybe we could get daddy Daniel something special.
Jennifer: Aunt Maggie, I am not important enough in Daniel's life to ruin his day, never mind rip his heart to shreds.
Maggie: I disagree.
Jennifer: No, you don't get it. He doesn't want to hear what I have to say. He doesn't want me interfering in his life. I don't know what I'm talking about. I should just stay out of it. So that's--that's exactly what I'm gonna do.
Maggie: Jennifer... I know... nothing can be more painful than what you have just gone through, what you're still going through. So...[Chuckles] I feel somewhat, um, insensitive going on about my son and his needs. So I hope you can forgive me if it seems callous.
Jennifer: You know what, aunt Maggie? Life goes on. And you're devoted to your son, as you should be, and that is not callous or insensitive.
Maggie: Thank you for understanding.
Jennifer: Yes, I do. I understand that you want to protect your son. And I was trying to protect Daniel, and that's what got him so upset with me, which is why he doesn't want me involved in his life anymore.
Maggie: I know that's not true.
Jennifer: Aunt Maggie, I know it is true. That's why your insistence that he needs me to think well of him--it doesn't make any sense.
Maggie: It does to me.
Jennifer: No, it doesn't! He's not acting that way. He's actually dismissive of my opinions.
Maggie: Well, maybe you overreacted. I can't--I can't believe that Daniel would be dismissive of you.
Jennifer: Well, he is. And I know you're trying to help, but I have not lost my mind, and I have not lost all perspective--I promise you.
Maggie: I'm sorry if you think I'm judging you.
Jennifer: I don't think that you're judging me. I just... I know you're trying to help your son, and you don't want him to be stressed and unhappy. I get that--I do.
Maggie: Honey, I don't want that for you either.
Jennifer: I know.
Maggie: So, Jennifer, look... I will tell you that given Daniel--that he can't be a surgeon any longer. I mean, you know how passionate he was about his work.
Jennifer: I do know that.
Maggie: And then there's more heartbreak for him because his daughter left.
Jennifer: I know, but she'll be back, aunt Maggie.
Maggie: Well, we hope so, but we don't know when. Anyway, the point is that with all of this upheaval in his life, more than ever, Daniel needs to know that the people he cares about are there for him.
Jennifer: No, that's where you're exaggerating my importance in his life.
Maggie: No, I'm not. I'm not. Trust me, Jennifer. You see, that's why I think this is tearing him apart--to think that you're not his friend anymore.
EJ: The depositions-- they were conducted by Justin Kiriakis.
Brown: Kiriakis? He's one of the best attorneys in the state.
EJ: Are you saying there's no way to discredit him?
Brown: How? His reputation with the bar is impeccable.
EJ: Fine. Then we'll go after a judge.
Brown: [Laughs] No judge is gonna climb into bed with you. Those days are over.
EJ: Then we'll prove that my brother's incompetent, or we'll remind the public that Nick Fallon is a convicted murderer. I mean, it can't be that bloody difficult, can it?
Brown: I'm sorry, EJ. Those depositions are solid as a rock.
Gabi: Well, actually, Nick's the one that kind of, you know, made everything go away.
Rafe: Nick? Nick Fallon? Ah, great. How is he involved in this?
Gabi: Well, Chad and Nick got into a fight over Melanie, and Chad beat up Nick really bad. And so Nick wasn't gonna press charges, but then when he heard Chad threatening me--
Rafe: Wait, wait, wait. Threatened you how?
Gabi: Well, okay, Chad got angry with me and said that he was gonna go to the police and tell them everything. But when Nick heard that, he said that he would go--
Rafe: He would go to the police, right? And then Chad would go to jail just like you. Okay, what's the deal?
Gabi: Okay, so they went to Justin and did depositions. And... you know, Nick gave a statement exonerating Chad, and Chad gave one exonerating me.
Rafe: Justin has those statements on record now?
Gabi: Yeah, he had them sealed immediately. Chad can't change his story at all.
Rafe: Okay, he's sure about this?
Gabi: Yeah. They're legally binding. I know. This, like, changes everything. It's like I've been given a second chance.
Rafe: Yes, this does.
Gabi: Oh, my God. I should probably go. Did I wake you? I totally woke you up.
Rafe: Yeah, you did, but it was worth it. This is great news. I'm so happy for you.
Gabi: Thank you so much. You've done so much for me. I love you so much.
Rafe: I love you too. [Groans]
Gabi: Okay, I'm gonna go.
Rafe: Okay. Wow!
Gabi: I know.
Rafe: This is great.
Chad: Okay, look, what I had on Gabi was big, okay? Big enough to send her to prison. And when things blew up with Melanie, I told EJ about it. And, of course, EJ told me not to do anything. Said he'd handle it and he would help me get her back.
Chad: I don't know. I didn't ask him what his plan was. It was just--
Sami: But he said he would help you, and it had to do with what you had on Gabi.
Chad: He just said that he would fix it, okay? Then I got into this thing with Nick, and then I ended up losing whatever hold I had over Gabi.
Sami: For real?
Chad: That's what I was telling EJ yesterday, okay? And then when I did, he, uh...
Sami: He lost it.
Sami: [Scoffs] I guess I was right. I was right, okay? He needed whatever you had on Gabi, but not to help you.
Sami: He was doing it to keep Rafe away from me.
Chad: Wait. Rafe has nothing to do with this.
Sami: Are you kidding me? He's Gabi's brother. He would do anything to help her, including stay away from me.
Chad: Okay, hold on. I thought you guys split up.
Sami: EJ was using what you had on Gabi to make Rafe stay away from me. Now, you see? He said he wanted to help you, but the truth is he was keeping Rafe away from me. That's why he said that you ruined everything. That's why Rafe told me that he had to stay away from me. That's what he was doing.
Chad: That son of a bitch didn't help me. Damn him!
Sami: Go get him, Chad. Now I get to call Rafe. Oh, my God. I can't believe it. I forgot my phone.
Rafe: I have to find her. Yeah...
Maggie: Hello? What's all this?
Victor: I believe they call it brunch.
Maggie: [Laughs] What's the occasion?
Victor: Well, I thought it would be a good idea to spend the day with my beautiful wife.
Maggie: Wow, you pulled out all the stops. They're all my favorites.
Victor: I made sure of that.
Maggie: [Laughs] Oh, thank you, Victor. It's lovely. How did I get so lucky to have a man to take such good care of me? I cherish you, Victor.
Victor: You do, eh? An old fool like me?
Daniel: Hey, you know, I was just, uh--I was leaving, so--
Jennifer: W-will you stay?
Daniel: No, you know, that's not a really good idea.
Jennifer: I just would really like to talk to you.
Daniel: I know that you want to talk, but I don't want--
Jennifer: This would be a really good time to clear the air, please.
Nicole: Oh, good. You're here. Could you add this to my file?
Maxine: What is it?
Nicole: It's a change-of-address form.
Maxine: Leaving town?
Nicole: Oh, now, why would I do that? I'd miss you too much.
Maxine: Wait. Hold up. This is Dr. Dan's address.
Nicole: It's creepy that you know that, but, yes, it is.
Maxine: You're living with him now?
Nicole: He's helping me with the baby.
Maxine: Helping you? [Scoffs] You've got to be kidding.
Nicole: Why would I kid about that? Dr. Dan is the most loyal friend I've ever had.
Maxine: Then Lord help that man.
[Knock at door]
Sami: Rafe, it's me. Rafe, open the door. I know what EJ did. Are you there? Oh, God, where is he?
Rafe: Sami? You there? It's me. Sami? Please? Damn it.
This is Cameron. Cameron, this is...
Abigail: Abigail. Uh, and... Cameron and I have met before.
Cameron: Yeah. Abigail and I are friends.
Oh, okay. Cool.
Cameron: We should probably get going, though.
So nice to meet you, Abigail.
Abigail: Yeah, you too.
Gabi: Hey, you okay?
Abigail: Yeah. Don't I look it?
Gabi: Actually, uh, no.
Abigail: I'm really glad you're here.
Gabi: Me too.
Sami: Where are you, Rafe?
Rafe: Where is she?
[Knock at door]
EJ: Samantha? Samantha. You gave me the key for an emergency. I think this constitutes an emergency.
Chad: You lousy bastard.
EJ: Chad... what the hell is wrong with you?
Chad: I trusted you, EJ. That's what's wrong with me. I asked you for one thing, one thing-- to help me get back Mel.
EJ: Well, I-I mean, I--
Chad: You promised that you were gonna take care of things.
EJ: Chad, what exactly is it that you think I've been doing?
Chad: Nothing! Melanie is gone. She is not coming back.
EJ: Yeah. Well, I told you to be patient, didn't I? But you couldn't do that, could you? No, you had to run away to Justin and give some asinine deposition. What did you think was gonna happen?
Chad: Well, what difference does it make, since you had no intention of helping me in the first place?
EJ: You calm down.
Chad: Oh, no, you don't get to tell me what to do anymore. You don't care about me and Melanie. What you did was took what I said and twist it around to help yourself.
EJ: Okay, what exactly is it that you think I've done?
Chad: No, no, no, it's not what I think, okay? It's what I know. You used me. You used me to get Sami back, and you didn't care how or what it cost me.
EJ: Chad, I'm your brother. I'm on your--
Chad: Will you stop lying? Stop, because I know the truth now... about all of it!
EJ: Who told you this, uh... truth?
Chad: Who do you think, EJ? Sami told me.
Maggie: You're not a fool. Why would you say that, darling?
Victor: Well, I just... I thought I could distract you-- your being sad because Melanie's left town. Maybe I could cheer you up a bit.
Victor: But it's too early, isn't it?
Maggie: Oh, Victor, it's not that. You did cheer me up by being so thoughtful and so sweet. It's just...mm.
Maggie: I'm not very hungry-- that's all.
Victor: I understand.
Maggie: Darling... it's not just Melanie leaving, but it's Daniel too. He's--he's hurting so much right now, and I can't do anything to help him. There's just nothing I can do.
Victor: Oh, but he knows you're there for him, and you care tremendously. I mean, that means a lot.
Maggie: Yeah, I suppose. What is that--that expression? "You're only as happy as your least happy child"?
Victor: That's true.
Maggie: [Sighs] Hold me, Victor. That's what I need. I need you to hold me. [Sighs]
Nicole: Well, I didn't know it was considered appropriate for hospital personnel to comment on patient files.
Maxine: Just confirming the facts.
Nicole: Well, are you going to file this or not?
Maxine: When I get around to it. Maybe by then, someone will have come to their senses and, uh, changed their locks.
Nicole: Doesn't matter what you think, Maxine. Daniel's committed to me-- mm-hmm. Really?
Doctor: Nicole Walker?
Nicole: Oh, yeah, that's me.
Doctor: I'm Dr. Sedwick. Uh, Dr. Knapf was called in on an emergency across town, and asked if I would see you today instead.
Nicole: Oh, okay.
Doctor: Um, but I'm afraid I can't give you much time. I am heading out of the country and leaving for the airport as soon as we are done here.
Doctor: No, volunteer work, actually. A group of us offer women's health care in impoverished regions of south America.
Nicole: Wow. That's... [Chuckles] Great and very noble. I really--I hope my son grows up to be a doctor and wants to do great things like that. I have a feeling he will.
Doctor: Aw, come on. Let's get started.
Doctor: So anything I should know before we get started?
Nicole: Well, uh, the baby is due in less than three weeks, but you could probably read that right there on the chart.
Nicole: And in case you were wondering, the father couldn't be here because he's working.
Doctor: I see.
Nicole: And, of course, I said that was okay... because he would be here in spirit.
Jennifer: I have a confession to make.
Daniel: Okay, Jennifer--
Jennifer: No, please, can-- can you please just let me do this? Can we just sit down? I just want to talk to you for a minute. Thank you.
Jennifer: Um... I mean, maybe it's losing Jack. Maybe it's a lot of things... but I feel like I have been... very judgmental where you're concerned. And I want you to know that... no matter what is going on with you and Nicole, it is none of my business.
Daniel: Okay, listen, you don't have to do--
Jennifer: Yes, I have to do this, Daniel... because before all of this tension, we were friends. We were really good friends. And I guess I'm just wondering if... you know, can we just pick up where we left off? Is that possible?
EJ: Samantha told you what exactly?
Chad: Why don't you ask her yourself? Although, come to think of it, she probably won't talk to you again.
EJ: Where is she?
Chad: My guess is she's probably looking for Rafe.
EJ: You idiot! Do you have any idea what you have done?
Chad: What--what I've done?
EJ: You could've had everything... everything. All you had to do was follow a simple instruction, but you couldn't trust me, could you? Hmm?
Chad: You are such a coward, EJ. You lie. You manipulate. You stab people in the back. And when it's all shot to hell, it's never, ever on you. You're just like him--Stefano. You are his son. You two are exactly alike.
[Door opens, closes]
Chad: [Clears throat]
Gabi: You scared me, Chad.
Chad: You should be scared. You cost me everything, Gabi. You cost me Melanie, and now, somehow, some way, I'm gonna make you pay for it. Bank on it.
Nicole: [Chuckles] It's funny to actually see you writing stuff down.
Doctor: I know. It's like the olden days, right?
Doctor: There's some problem with the computer system this morning.
Nicole: Oh, that's too bad.
Doctor: Okay. Let us listen to this baby's heartbeat.
Nicole: Yes! [Laughter] Oh, yeah, doctor knapf's used that on me several times.
Doctor: Oh, so you're an old pro at this, huh?
Doctor: Excellent. How are you sleeping?
Nicole: Um, fine.
Doctor: You taking your prenatal vitamins?
Doctor: Excellent. And, uh, tell me about the baby.
Nicole: You mean the future kicker of the Chicago bears?
Doctor: Oh, he's a lively one, huh?
Nicole: Oh, yes, he is. In fact, I joke all the time about how he's probably gonna be a-a football player or a soccer player, but, uh, I really hope he--he grows up to be a doctor, just like his father.
Jennifer: You're not saying anything.
Daniel: I'm just a little thrown.
Jennifer: You don't miss our friendship?
Daniel: I... think you are an amazing, amazing person. You've always been, but our lives are just--we're just going in opposite directions.
Jennifer: Okay, I-I'm not-- I'm not really sure I know what that means.
Daniel: You're coping. You're coping with your grief over Jack. You're trying to rebuild your life, and I made this commitment to be there for Nicole and her baby, and we... we are just consumed right now...
Daniel: With what we feel we have to do--
Jennifer: So that precludes our being friends?
Daniel: [Smacks lips] Jen, it changes everything for us. Friends? Friends, Jen? I-I don't see it.
Sami: I know. [Gasps and cries]
Nicole: So he was kicking up a storm last night. He woke me up several times.
Doctor: And how long did that last?
Nicole: Oh, till just after midnight? That's probably why he's quiet now. He's resting up for round two.
Doctor: So there's been no movement this morning? None at all?
Nicole: Why would you ask me that? Is there a problem?
Doctor: Nicole, I don't want to alarm you.
Nicole: Oh, God, what is it?
Doctor: We're not getting a heartbeat on the fetal monitor.
