Austin: Hi. What's your hurry? Come back to bed.
Madison: Brady, come on. Please pick up the phone. Call me back. I mean, how many messages do I have to leave you before you call me back? Look, I was angry, okay? I was mad. I was angry. I don't think I should have left like that. And, you know, around midnight, I started to get worried, but now the sun's up, so frantic wouldn't really begin to describe how I'm feeling, so please just--just forget about whatever we fought about and just call me, okay, please?
Brady: [Sniffs] [Breathing heavily]
Daniel: Mm. You know what?
Daniel: I have decided you are the sexiest pregnant woman I've ever seen.
Nicole: Ah, I bet you say that to all the girls.
Daniel: Are you implying that's a line? Hmm?
Nicole: Pfft, as if you need a line. I haven't exactly been playing hard to get.
Daniel: Oh, no, you don't play at all, do you? Look at that. You're just teasing me again, right there. My God. You're shameless, you know that?
Daniel: But, I'll tell you what, that's one of the things that I've come to admire about you. You don't play around.
Nicole: We don't need to play games. Right? I mean, this is--this is what it is and nothing more, right?
Daniel: Right. Yeah.
Nicole: Okay, way too much talking before my morning coffee.
Daniel: Oh, yeah? You want coffee? That's what you want right now? Okay, I'll get you--
Nicole: Well, you know, eventually, but I'm pretty sure you were in the middle of something.
Nicole: Before this conversation started.
Daniel: I was in the middle of something?
Nicole: You were.
Daniel: I wonder where I was.
Daniel: Oh, wait a minute, it's coming back to me.
[Knock at door]
Rafe: Nicole, you in there?
Nicole: Oh, um. Hang on, hang on.
Nicole: Hang on a second.
Nicole: Yeah, yeah, hang on. Just one second. One second, one second. Hang on. [Laughs] One second.
EJ: All this DiMera power's not quite as glamorous as you thought it is, right? Most of it just comes down to a big, fat pile of paperwork, William.
Will: Well, it's important, or else you wouldn't be doing it.
EJ: It's important, but it's not particularly interesting. Do you have to stay right over my shoulder this entire time?
Will: Well, I just want to know the inís and outís of the DiMera way of doing things.
EJ: "The inís and outís of the DiMera way of doing things." Well... [Clears throat] You seem to be rather a dab hand at blackmail, so I see you've mastered the fundamentals.
Will: Oh, thank you, I learned from the master. [Laughs] Knowledge is power. You knew something that allowed you to, I don't know, move me around like a chess piece, and now I know something about you that allows me to back you into a corner.
EJ: Hmm. A word to the wise, William. Your prey is at its most dangerous when it's backed into a corner.
Carrie: Sorry, I wish I could come back to bed, but I have a big day. I have a new case. Okay?
Austin: Yeah, but your alarm clock's not scheduled to go off for another half hour.
Carrie: I know, but I just-- I've been so tired lately, and I've been cutting it really close, and I could get a jump start on today.
Austin: You could get a jump start on the day, you know, or you could come back to bed. And I don't know what the big deal is. All I want to do is talk to you.
Carrie: [Laughs] I don't think talking is what you have in mind.
Austin: Can you blame me? I mean, it is almost illegal how beautiful you are.
Nicole: Okay, just a minute.
Rafe: Take your time.
Daniel: I'll make the coffee.
Nicole: No, no, no, stay right there.
Rafe: You say something?
Nicole: No, no, just to hang on a second. Hi. Sorry. Uh, it's kind of a bad time. I was just getting dressed.
Rafe: Then I guess I should have called first.
Rafe: Anyway, I was by the pharmacy. I picked these up for you. Save you a trip.
Nicole: Oh, thank you. You didn't have to do that.
Rafe: Nah, it was on the way. It's all good. You okay?
Nicole: Oh, yeah, I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm just sorry I can't invite you in.
Rafe: You sure you're okay, though? EJ's not giving you a hard time, is he?
Nicole: No. Gosh, no. It's nothing like that.
Rafe: Good. What is it then?
Will: I don't think of you as my prey. I just think our relationship has evolved a little bit. You know, I'm not under your thumb anymore totally.
EJ: But you really think you've turned the tables on me, don't you?
Will: No, I think I've leveled the playing field. And just because I could blow you out of the water doesn't mean I want to, so don't worry.
EJ: [Sighs] Bravado, William, is not a sign of confidence. In fact, it demonstrates a lack thereof.
Will: The truth is, I just want to help you negotiate this, you know, tricky time in your life.
EJ: You--you want to help me? That's very thoughtful of you, William.
Will: You know, I was thinking about when Rafe came here yesterday and was pushing you to take the lie detector test. That is kind of an interesting turn of events, don't you think?
EJ: Not really. It had a rather strong aura of dťja vu. Another one of his idle threats.
Will: Well, idle?
EJ: Oh, he knew that wasn't gonna happen before he got here.
Will: You know what I think, though? I think it is going to happen.
Will: Oh, thank you.
EJ: Why is that?
Will: Because, I mean, as long as you refuse to take the test, you're still a suspect in your father's murder case.
EJ: Along with everybody else he ever met.
Will: Okay, listen. It seems to me that the kind of people you do business with and the kind of people you deal with think, you know, they think they're dealing with Stefano's son. And they think this is a family business. And they think that you're carrying on your father's legacy and that you share his vision and all that stuff, but--
EJ: Watch it, okay?
Will: Look, the fact is... that you being a murder suspect in your father's case makes-- makes them uncomfortable. Right? To say the least. And I think it hurts the ability of DiMera Enterprises to move into the 21st century. So take the test. Take the test, clear your name. Unless you can't.
EJ: William, there are legal complexities that you cannot begin to understand. In fact, why don't you take this and add that to the long list of things that you do not understand.
Will: [Laughs] This isn't complex, okay? If it gets out to Rafe or really to anybody that you lied about being Stefano's son, that's gonna look bad for you. I mean, I think it's gonna make you look guilty as sin.
Maggie: You look like you didn't get very much sleep.
Madison: [Laughs] None. I have been calling him all night and he doesn't pick up, and he doesn't call me back.
Maggie: Well, he called me, but he didn't leave a message, so I haven't heard from him either.
Madison: I'm really sorry. I-it's not right to dump all of this on you.
Maggie: It's okay. Madison, Madison, it's okay. You need to talk to someone, and I do know the territory.
Madison: I just--I feel lost.
Maggie: Well, at least he called. So, maybe after the fight, Brady just thought he needed some space, some time to think.
Madison: No, I know. I get that. I really understand that. I just--I don't understand why he can't call me back, you know? Why can't he just let me know that he's all right? He--it feels like he's punishing me.
Maggie: Yeah, I can see why it does.
Madison: You know, maybe it's my fault. I mean, I've just been so defensive with him.
Maggie: Let me understand this. [Clears throat] You're worried that you've been too defensive and that the fight was actually your fault? And you should have been more understanding and less confrontational?
Maggie: No! It's a checklist of feelings that people have when they're dealing with an addict. Brady is an addict.
Madison: I know.
Maggie: I know he says he's not using, but you're afraid that's not true, aren't you?
Madison: I know it's not true.
Brady: It's okay. It's all right. This is all right. It's all right. [Sniffs] [Groans] No. [Mutters] [Exhales]
Nicole: So one of the secrets of pregnancy is mornings are not my friend. [Chuckles]
Rafe: Oh. Feeling sick again?
Nicole: No. No, I'm just not feeling very sociable.
Rafe: I didn't mean to interrupt.
Nicole: Come on, it's--it's sweet really, and thank you for picking up the vitamins, and I'll call you later, okay?
Rafe: Yeah, yeah, I mean, if you feel like it.
Nicole: Yeah, of course. The truth is, this passes.
Rafe: Well, I hope you feel better. Well, you look great.
Nicole: You're sweet. Thanks.
Nicole: And thanks again for the vitaminís. I will, I'll call you, okay?
Daniel: Oh, that's very funny. You seemed pretty sociable to me... before he showed up.
Will: Mm, you think this is funny?
EJ: Oh, I think you're funny, William. I mean, I suppose I understand your adolescent desire to prove your power over me.
Will: Oh, come on. Adolescent?
EJ: But why the lie detector test? I mean, why does that matter to you?
Will: Because the bottom line is I'm the least of your problems.
EJ: [Chuckles] Yeah, not sure if I agree with that.
Will: [Laughs] Hey, look, I know you think I'm posturing, and I know you think I don't see the big picture or whatever, but here's what I do see. Thank you. Look, if you don't watch yourself, you are going to get arrested and end up in jail for Stefano's murder. It really doesn't matter if you're guilty or not.
EJ: Trust me, William, I'm not going to jail. I'm innocent. If that counts for anything in this town.
Will: Well, if you're innocent, why not just take the test?
EJ: Because there are all sorts of technical and legal complications of doing something like that.
Will: Look, I know you could clear your good name.
EJ: I could clear my name of murder, possibly, but you have to understand, I go in there, and his--you know, Rafe and his little band of merry men will try and use that test to pin something, anything, on me.
Will: Okay, how about this? Don't fall into it. Just be careful about what you say.
EJ: I'm not in the habit of giving the police ammunition.
Will: Oh, I think they have all the ammunition they need... except for the card that I hold.
EJ: William, don't mix metaphors, please.
Will: Look, I'm saying what we both know is true, right? You're a DiMer--well, everybody thinks you're a DiMera, okay? So everybody knows that you have the most to gain by Stefano's death. Plus, all the other suspects are fine, upstanding citizens.
EJ: All of the other suspects are in some way related to the bloody police commissioner.
Will: Yeah, I know. You're in a tough spot. And it's not--if Rafe is on the case, it's not gonna make anything any easier, because he's--he's highly motivated to take you down, and he's not gonna give up easy.
EJ: Please, tell me about it. He's like a little bloody hamster spinning in his wheel.
Will: Yes, he's gonna get in your way of everything you do, both as mayor and co-head of DiMera Enterprises. But if you take the test and you pass it, right, he'll have no choice but to back off. Can--can you listen to me, please? Do you think the governor is going to--is going to let him keep focusing his investigation on you if you pass the test?
EJ: I don't know. Maybe. Maybe you have a point.
EJ: Maybe. Maybe. [Chuckles]
Nicole: Look, I had no idea he was coming over.
Nicole: So where were we?
Daniel: Yeah, I'm not really sure.
Nicole: Excuse me. Is--is something wrong?
Daniel: No. No, I-I just think I better get going. That's all.
Nicole: Ah, well, you didn't have to get going a few minutes ago.
Daniel: Yeah, well, you had me under your spell. Now I'm coming to my senses.
Nicole: Okay. So do you want to get together-- do you want to get together a little later then?
Daniel: I don't know. Let's see what's--what's happening at the hospital.
Daniel: And where are my boots?
Nicole: They're over here.
Nicole: Look, Daniel, um, I've never been known for being wildly sensitive, but even I can tell that there's been a mood change. You know, naked to dressed in 30 seconds, it speaks volumes. Hey, Daniel.
Nicole: Stop. Can you just... tell me what the problem is?
Daniel: All right, I'll tell you. 'Cause there's something you need to understand about me. I've learned a few things this past year. Jennifer--two guys, one woman? No, never again. Ever. I'm no one's backup plan.
Nicole: [Sighs] I really don't know what you mean.
Nicole: Daniel, why do you think you're a backup plan?
Daniel: Just, you know, what happened.
Nicole: What-- Rafe brought me vitaminís. Is that too racy for you?
Nicole: Did I hurt your feelings? I mean, what did--what did you want me to do, invite him in and say, "look who's here"? Daniel, what we have is private.
Daniel: Okay, Nic, Nic, my feelings aren't hurt. They're not, really. And I'm not mad. I'm just...
Nicole: You're just what?
Daniel: When you order room service, do you always just check in the mirror, check your hair, check your makeup before you open the door?
Nicole: Yeah, I do. I'm incredibly vain. I thought you knew that about me. Does that bother you?
Daniel: No, that doesn't bother me. It doesn't. It's just that, you know, I thought, while I know this isn't a relationship that people write poetry about, you know, at least we had some honesty. And now I-I don't know if we do.
Nicole: Honesty? I have been nothing but 100% honest with you.
Daniel: Yeah, well, it's hard to do that when you're not honest with yourself. I'll see you around.
Madison: You know, I know that I don't--I don't really understand what Brady's going through. I mean, I get it. I get it in my head. I understand it intellectually, but I don't know what this feels like for him.
Maggie: No, because you're not an addict. That's why addicts need help from people who are going through the same thing.
Madison: Yeah, but what concerns me is that I was worried that he was using again, and maybe that somehow undermined his sobriety. I mean, it's awful to think that the person you love doesn't trust you.
Maggie: Madison, that's the elephant in the room with someone that you love who is a recovering addict. What--what is that fine line between faith and blind faith? And, see, what Brady is going through right now, you're wondering, "yeah, what is going on here?" And clearly you have a right to.
Madison: But it must be so demoralizing for him.
Maggie: Exactly. He comes with baggage, Madison.
Maggie: I'm not sure that this is what Brady is doing, but I don't like the silent treatment. If he guilts you into keeping secrets, into not rocking the boat, into looking the other way, if you feel like you can't be honest because he can't handle it, that's not good. 'Cause it always blows up eventually.
Madison: You know from tough, don't you?
Maggie: [Laughs] [Pats Madison's knee] Brady and I have to be tough. We have a huge fight on our hands every day. We can't fool ourselves. We can't sugarcoat things. And we can't demand that the people we love pretend that everything is wonderful when it isn't.
Madison: I really thought that you were gonna be angry with me because I was doubting him.
Maggie: No. I would be angry with you if you didn't stop and think, really think, how do you feel about all of this, because, when--when Brady is even in recovery, he's still an addict. Okay? And that's not gonna go away. There's never any guarantees.
Madison: Okay. I get that now.
Maggie: Okay. Well, then you need to ask yourself, you need to be honest and pragmatic... do you love him enough to be there for him no matter what happens?
Brady: That's a very good question.
Madison: Thank God you're okay.
Rafe: Remember the arms deal you were talking about?
Rafe: Yeah, well, EJ didn't know a damn thing about it. And Billie thinks that Stefano was setting him up.
Spencer: Yes, but we have no proof.
Rafe: Yeah, well, he was up to something. EJ was out of it. There was a new will for God's sake.
Spencer: Which he never had time to execute.
Rafe: Yeah, well, something was going on.
Spencer: What, your gut tells you that, right?
Rafe: Listen, I don't know if EJ killed his father or not, but I'm gonna get into that mansion, and I want to find out what happened that night. And I want that lie detector test.
Will: Okay, thank you, yes. I have a point, right? It's a good idea to take the lie detector test. You know, but, more than it being a good idea, I'm in charge, so I say you do it. Here you go, call Rafe.
EJ: Let me make something very clear to you, William. Whatever I decide to do, that is my decision, regardless of whatever control you may think you have over me.
Spencer: What are you working on?
Rafe: Well, even though we can't use 'em in court, we know DiMera had those bullets. Right? He wasn't gonna throw 'em at someone.
Spencer: He never registered a gun, we know that much.
Rafe: Mm-hmm. So I'm working backwards, checking these manufacturers' inventories, seeing if I can come up with something.
Spencer: Yes, and if he had a gun, we know it wasn't the murder weapon. It's probably at the bottom of a river by now.
Rafe: Anyone ever tell you you're kind of negative?
[Knock at door]
Man: I got some lawyer out here wanting information on the Hamilton case.
Rafe: I'll be right out.
Spencer: No, it's okay. You can use the room. I've got some things to do. I'll--I'll send him in.
Carrie: [Clears throat]
Daniel: Hey, it's Dr. Jonas here. Have we got the test results back on that Randolph kid? So the tests are negative then? Wow, that's--that's great. Um, thank you. Thank you. He's a lucky kid. All right.
Nicole: [Clears throat] Hey. Uh, decaf, black. Just like you like it. Can I sit down?
Madison: You don't know how glad I am to see you.
Brady: I'm sorry.
Madison: Are you all right?
Brady: Yes. Yes, I am.
Maggie: Well, she was worried to death about you, Brady, just like I was. I'm sorry I didn't answer when you called last night.
Brady: I should have left a message f--I should have.
Madison: How did you even know I was here?
Brady: I didn't. I didn't. I came to see her.
Maggie: Okay, um, I-I think you should talk to Madison first. I'm gonna leave the two of you alone for a while.
Madison: Can we sit?
Brady: I had a--I had a really bad night last night. But I would like to know your answer to Maggie's question, actually. Well, I heard she asked you something.
Madison: What, whether or not I love you enough to put up with you no matter what?
Madison: Brady, really, if you had listened to any of the zillion messages I left you last night, I would think you'd know the answer to that question.
Brady: I listened to all of 'em.
Madison: Oh, you did? You listened to all of them, and you still didn't call me? Wow.
Brady: I'm so sorry I worried you last night.
Madison: No, "worried me," Brady? Really? "Worried me"? I was frantic. I was absolutely out of my mind. So, you know what--
Brady: I'm sorry.
Madison: No, you know what, before you start demanding proclamations of my love, why don't you tell me where the hell you were?
Rafe: I didn't know you were Hamilton's lawyer.
Carrie: He just hired me, or I would have known that you were the lead detective on this case.
Rafe: All right. So what do you need?
Carrie: Oh, I need a lot of things, but... I'm here to go over the report of the undercover cop who busted him.
Rafe: [Mutters] All righty. [Sighs] It's a--this is a routine drug bust.
Carrie: He says it was entrapment.
Rafe: But undercover cop says he wanted to make a buy, your guy said he could hook him up.
Carrie: According to the cop. I'd like to talk to that cop.
Rafe: Okay. Okay, fine. I'll make an appointment and see that he shows up.
Rafe: All right.
Carrie: Well, that's it. I'll see you soon.
Rafe: All right. Carrie. You said we were gonna steer clear of each other, and it's been a day. What are we gonna do?
Carrie: Honestly, I-I have no idea.
Rafe: Want to have a cup of coffee so we can talk about it?
Brady: Madison, when I didn't call you last night, I wasn't playing around with you, okay? I was just--I was having a really, really rough night.
Brady: And I went to a place that I swore to God I would never go back to, and I went there again, but I came back and I'm all right. But I came back because of you. Because I thought about you and I didn't want to lose you. And I want my life back.
Madison: What place, Brady? What are you even talking about?
Brady: Last night, it was behind me, it's done.
Madison: Oh, it's behind you! Oh, well, it's not behind me. Okay? You put me through hell last night. Oh, and I'm not even supposed to ask you about it? I'm just supposed to get on with it?
Brady: I am back.
Madison: Right! And now everything's supposed to be okay. It's not, Brady. It's not. Not by a long shot.
Rafe: So how you feeling?
Carrie: Not quite as tired as I was.
Rafe: Well, that's good.
Rafe: [Laughs] Listen, you know, considering our plan to avoid one another clearly isn't happening, I think that we need to figure out a way to... to be around one another without it being difficult.
Carrie: And I keep thinking about what you said yesterday.
Rafe: Yeah, you know, about that, I think maybe I was a little bit out of line.
Carrie: No. You weren't wrong. If it's this hard for us to be apart, maybe...
Rafe: Maybe what?
EJ: You are out of your league.
Will: You know, even if they just brought me up from AAA this morning, I could still mess you up.
EJ: Do you love your mother, William?
Will: Uh, what does she have to do with this?
EJ: Regardless of what I decide to do vis-ŗ-vis that polygraph, I'll be watching you. And if you decide to use any of this information that you think you have, I will retaliate. And I can assure you, it will be deadly.
Daniel: Are you following me?
Nicole: You forgot to make the coffee and... well, this one's yours.
Daniel: Yeah, I guess-- I guess you can sit down.
Nicole: I-I was gonna call you to make an appointment.
Daniel: Why is that? You look fine to me.
Nicole: Well, I have this-- this issue, Doctor. It's just that whenever I'm--I'm around you, I-I forget to do things like breathing... swallowing...
Daniel: Okay. Oh, my God.
Nicole: It's a real problem. Think you can you help me?
Daniel: It's a problem. You-- oh, my God, you are unbelievable. You have--oh, my God. Help me here. Oh... there, I got it.
Daniel: Oh, my God.
Nicole: If you blow me off, who's gonna make you laugh?
Daniel: You are insane. Yeah.
Brady: I know you're angry, but I need you to listen.
Madison: Where were you? Where were you, Brady?
Brady: We had a fight.
Brady: Remember, we had the argument. All right, I-I got the craving again, and I just--
Madison: You just what? You what?
Brady: Maggie--Maggie wasn't there. I called her, and when she wasn't there, I did the only thing that I knew to do to get the feeling out of me, so I went and I bought--I bought some coke.
Madison: You what?
Brady: I did. Yes, I did. But, listen, what's important--
Madison: Wait, no, I'm sorry, you wanted to get high, so you went out and bought drugs?
Brady: Madison, please listen to me, okay? You're not listening to me!
Madison: No, you have been insisting to me the only reason there was coke in your system is because Ian was slipping it to you. You said to me that's the only possible way it could have happened, but that's just not true, is it?
Rafe: I'm sorry this is so hard. I do not want to make things harder for you. I know you have so much at stake right now... Austin and the baby. I know. I need to keep my distance, let you guys work things out.
Carrie: [Exhales] I just never thought it would be this hard, Rafe.
Rafe: I know.
Carrie: Um, I know what I said, that I need to keep strong, but I'm not sure that I can do this.
Austin: Do what, Carrie?
[Knock at door]
EJ: Morning, Special Investigator Spencer. I changed my mind. I've decided to take your little lie detector test.
