Nicole: Knock knock.
Daniel: Well, look who it is.
Nicole: Are you okay? You, uh...you look a little serious there.
Daniel: Nah, you know, I'm just thinking about Lexie. I mean, she--she was so loyal. She was here every day right up until... you know, it's just my first day back without her and...I don't know, something just doesn't feel right, being here. I'm gonna miss her.
Nicole: I'm sorry for your loss.
Daniel: Yeah, I don't know, maybe it's better not to care too much anyway, right? Or love at all, you know what I mean?
Nicole: Certainly saves you a lot of heartache.
Daniel: Yes, it does. Listen to me going on and on. You were her sister-in-law for a while.
Nicole: Yeah, and she was pretty much the only redeeming member of that family.
Daniel: Yeah, well, that's all about to change now that you got this little one right here, right? So, what brings you by anyway?
Nicole: I wanted to thank you again.
Daniel: No, no, no, you don't have to thank me, you don't.
Nicole: No, I do, I do, because you could have...you could have made things really difficult for me when you caught me switching the labels on the DNA samples.
Daniel: Yeah, yeah, I could have.
Nicole: But you didn't...and you didn't tell EJ that this baby was his, and I know that couldn't have been an easy decision for you to make, and there isn't anything in the world that I could give you to prove to you how grateful I am.
Daniel: Then why even try?
Daniel: Well, you got what you want, Nic. All right, no one, no one is ever going to find out that you're having EJ's baby. No one...so you can drop the act now.
Kate: Ah, there you are!
Austin: There she is.
Kate: [Delighted growl] I am so glad you could meet me for breakfast, baby.
Carrie: So are we.
Kate: Wow. I mean, are you okay though? Can you handle this? Austin told me you had a little morning sickness, but I think you look absolutely fabulous.
Carrie: Oh, you told your mom.
Austin: No, no, no, no, it's not like--you got it out of me last night on the phone, and I know you said that you didn't want us telling a lot of people right away, but it's...
Carrie: She's your mom.
Austin: Yeah. [Laughter] And I think my mom's gonna need a little extra time getting used to the idea of being a grandmother again.
Kate: Oh, my God, really? Because I have been waiting forever, for years. I didn't think it was ever gonna happen.
Austin: Oh, but that's nice, Mom, thanks.
Kate: No, I--oh, honey, I am so happy, so happy for you.
Carrie: [Laughs] Thank you.
Kate: Wow, you two have been through so much, so much. Now, with this baby coming, you can put it all behind you. [Chuckles]
Rafe: Well, look who it is.
Roman: Agent Spencer, to whatever do we owe this honor?
Spencer: New assignment. Governor's asked for an objective agency to oversee the investigation into DiMera's murder.
Rafe: Well, well, well. [Chuckles] We knew the assignment was coming, we just didn't figure it would be ISA.
Spencer: Well, Stefano's death had some real international repercussions, given his recent involvement with the CIA.
Roman: Well, to be honest, I'm not sorry to see you take it over. I've lost enough sleep over this case already.
Spencer: So, look, Officer Kent briefed me on the way over, but you boys tell me--who do you think is our prime suspect?
Roman: Our gut says...
Rafe: EJ DiMera...Stefano's son.
EJ: [Sniffles] William... didn't hear you come in.
Will: What's going on?
EJ: "What's going on"? I expected you here a half an hour ago, William. You're late.
Will: I'm sorry.
EJ: Sorry, sorry--that's what you have to say for yourself, is it, "sorry"?
Will: Well, I thought you would call me and tell me not to come in today.
EJ: Why would I do that? Hm?
Will: Well, do you have to ask? I mean, your sister died today. I...know how much she meant--
EJ: Leave that alone.
Will: Listen, I was here when you got the call, and I know you're upset and I just--I expected that--
EJ: You expected what, mm? What? You thought I was going to just bury myself in grief, did you? Sit alone in the dark? Mourn my loss? Does that sound like something I would do?
Will: Well, I don't think anyone would blame you for taking a few days for yourself. I mean, even the mayor gets a day off or two.
EJ: Right, well, if I was just the mayor, then maybe I would be afforded that sort of luxury, but I'm not just the mayor, William. I'm also a DiMera.
Rafe: Well, we did consider the possibility that our suspect was working with someone else, but that theory fell apart.
Spencer: Why is that?
Rafe: Other suspectís alibiís out.
Spencer: Your grandson, Will?
Spencer: The press have been playing up his alibi.
Roman: Tabloids, sure. Anything to sell a few extra copies.
Spencer: Well, of course, the case is gonna be covered from every angle. You said yourself, Stefano's murder affects almost everyone in this town.
Roman: Doesn't mean I have to like it, especially when they exploit my family. Will's private life is nobody's business.
EJ: Here. You're front page news.
Will: Wow, I didn't ask for this, you know.
EJ: Well, at least nobody thinks you're a murderer.
Will: You know all this means is now the police are gonna focus on somebody else, right?
EJ: Yeah. I'm counting on that.
Spencer: EJ encouraged Will to come forward with his alibi.
Roman: According to what Will told us, yeah.
Spencer: Hmm...if EJ had something to hide, you'd think he'd want a suspect in custody.
Rafe: Yeah, well, he must've known his case wouldn't hold up.
Spencer: What've you got on Junior?
Rafe: Junior--oh. Nothing, except Stefano drew up a new will recently... disinheriting Junior.
Spencer: You're serious?
Rafe: Oh, yeah.
Roman: Yeah. But he was killed before he could sign it.
Spencer: Any ideas why Stefano wanted EJ cut off from the family fortune?
EJ: See, William, if you display any sort of weakness, you become vulnerable. You need to learn to protect yourself.
Will: What's your weakness? Your family?
EJ: What's left of it. That was my father's weakness too, you know. It's always important to prepare yourself for the next attack.
Spencer: So EJ fell out of favor with his father?
Roman: Yeah, well, actually, the fallout could've happened both ways.
Spencer: I'm listening.
Rafe: Billie Reed found out that Stefano gave us the tip that helped clear John Black of the embezzlement charges.
Spencer: I remember.
Roman: Yeah, and she fed that information to EJ, hoping he would say something to implicate himself in the plot.
Rafe: But he didn't, of course.
Spencer: That was the beginning of the end for Stefano.
Rafe: Seems so.
Roman: You see, EJ's plan to bring down John had been in the works for months. I mean, it was pretty much an airtight case, and then Stefano shot the hell out of it.
Rafe: God, that had to have hurt...to be betrayed by your own father like that, to have him choose his greatest enemy over you.
EJ: My father is gone, William. I have no choice but to take his place at the head of our family, our investments. There can be no doubt as to who is in charge.
Spencer: He definitely had motive, opportunity. Question is, is EJ DiMera the kind of man to shoot his father in cold blood?
EJ: Excellent. When you're finished, do me a favor. Print those out and put them to one side for me.
Will: You want to keep them?
EJ: Of course. They're about me.
Will: Yeah, but they're-- they're a joke. It's nothing substantial. They're just speculating that you might be, I don't know, taking over your father's position, stepping into his shoes.
EJ: Were you not listening to a word that I said earlier? That's exactly what I'm doing.
Will: Well, I...know. I'm just thinking about...you know, Chad. He's a DiMera too, and if I were him...
EJ: What about Chad? He's made it very clear he wants absolutely nothing to do with the family business. Evidently, he thinks it's beneath him. Loyalty, William...is something that is very important in this world, especially to me.
Will: I know.
EJ: Do you really? Really? 'Cause it rather seems to me that you have forgotten that I was the person who encouraged you to go forward and clear your name in my father's murder, and now you sit here and you're insinuating--insinuating that somehow I seem to be taking away from Chad what's rightfully his.
Will: That's not what I've been doing at all. I'm not insinuating that.
EJ: May I ask you a question? What do you see when you look at me?
EJ: Do you see some, uh... heartless bastard, some... [Sighs] Some chip off the old block who just takes whatever he wants? That--is that what you see?
EJ: Well, you should, 'cause that's who I am. That's who I have to be.
Austin: Ma...I gotta tell you again. I am so sorry about Stefano.
Kate: Well, it is what it is, you know?
Austin: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't do that.
Austin: I know that you two were separated, and I also know that you loved him.
Kate: [Whispers] Yeah. Well...at least he didn't have to see his daughter die, right?
Austin: Carrie and I, we're so sad about Lexie.
Kate: I know, I know, the whole situation is tragic, there's no way around it. Anyway, we have good news though, don't we? Finally, because this baby is going to be a blessing to the whole family.
Austin: Absolutely, absolutely, and it's what Carrie and I have always wanted. I mean...Ma, can you believe it? I mean, I'm having a baby!
Kate: I know, honey, I know, and you're going to be a fantastic dad.
Austin: I hope so.
Kate: Oh, come on, why would you say something like that?
Austin: I just--to be honest, look, I've made a lot of mistakes in my marriage up to this point.
Kate: Yeah, but you were not making those mistakes alone, and don't you for one moment ever think that you were.
Austin: Okay. Carrie's done her part too, but...
Kate: But--but what?
Austin: But nothing, okay? It's like you said. Everything is behind us now, and this baby is everything. Things are good and they're gonna stay that way, okay?
Nicole: You think this is an act? That I'm terrified, that I'm desperate?
Daniel: That you need my help? Isn't it? I mean, just a little bit.
Nicole: Who twisted your I.V. bag this morning?
Daniel: Oh, just calling it like I see it, legs.
Nicole: Why don't you call it like it is?
Daniel: Yeah, how's that?
Nicole: If EJ finds out that this kid is his, I will never see my baby again. That's why I'm freaking out, and you know that.
Daniel: Mm, I just thought you were laying it on a little bit thick for me, that's all.
Nicole: Okay, why would I be doing that?
Daniel: Hmm...well, pull at my heartstrings, keep me in line with your agenda.
Nicole: Oh, so now I'm manipulating you? You know what, maybe I should just take this back.
Daniel: Go ahead. Take it. Or...you could just admit it.
Nicole: Admit what?
Daniel: That you played me.
Daniel: Yeah, and then we could see where things go from there.
Nicole: So if I admit that I played you just a little--and I am not saying that I did--you wouldn't--you wouldn't be mad?
Daniel: I'd be a lot of things...but no, you know what, I think I'd actually be happy to hear it.
Nicole: Happy, why?
Daniel: You know, honesty can go a long way when two people are getting to know each other.
Nicole: Oh, is that what we're doing here?
Daniel: I don't know, you tell me, what are we doing here?
Nicole: Okay, maybe I did, maybe I did lay it on a little thick.
Daniel: See, now was that so hard?
Nicole: No. In fact, it felt liberating to get that...off my chest.
Daniel: Well, there's one more thing we need to get off your chest.
Nicole: What's that?
Daniel: This little act of yours, did it officially end before or after we kissed?
Nicole: Now you've insulted me. First, you accuse me of manipulating you--
Daniel: Which you just admitted was true.
Nicole: Only slightly true, okay? And now you're implying that I used sex too.
Daniel: No, no, no, not sex. Did I say sex? A kiss.
Nicole: Same thing.
Daniel: Oh, not where I come from, sweetheart. And if that qualifies as your idea of sex--
Nicole: If you knew what qualified as my idea of sex, your head would explode.
Nicole: Yeah, really.
Nicole: I'm not liking this whole little scenario of yours. It's not sitting well with me.
Daniel: All right, why's that?
Nicole: You've painted me out to be this seductive manipulator. Where does that leave you, completely innocent? Please. Sporting the white coat and all.
Daniel: Well, you know, really, it's just a uniform. I could take it off if that helps; does that help?
Nicole: Well, that's interesting, offering to disrobe as a deflection. Thank you.
Daniel: I'm not deflecting.
Nicole: You are not innocent here either, Doctor. You have a past too. Should I name them? Chelsea, Kate, Chloe--
Daniel: All right, all right, all right, you got--oh, yeah, sure, okay, I'm sure there's a point to this--
Nicole: Yeah, there is. Maybe that kiss wasn't part of my performance, but yours.
Daniel: Oh, so now I'm the one with the agenda? Is that what you're saying, I have the agenda here?
Nicole: Yeah, maybe you do. Maybe you thought that I was playing you, so you decided to play me.
Daniel: Why would I do that?
Nicole: Would you like me to spell it out for you?
Daniel: Small words, please. Spell it.
Nicole: I think you were curious. I think you wanted to see just how far I would go to get what I want from you.
Daniel: One can only imagine how far you would go.
Nicole: You're the one that said honesty goes a long way, so why don't you be honest now? Why did you really kiss me?
Austin: Well, don't hate me, Mom, but we're gonna have to eat and run.
Austin: Well, we just have a few things to do this morning.
Kate: Well, those few things are just gonna have to wait, because I want to take Carrie shopping.
Austin: Since when?
Kate: Since right now. Why, is there something wrong with that? I want to spend a little time with my beautiful daughter-in-law.
Carrie: Oh, Kate, not that I don't appreciate it, but you don't have to do that.
Kate: No, I know I don't, but you're carrying my grandbaby, you know, so just think about it as I'm spoiling the both of you from the very start. Besides, I am not going to take no for an answer.
Carrie: Well, I know better than to argue with you, so...
Kate: I hope so. Well, my handsome son, go off. Just stay out of trouble, okay, baby?
Austin: I'll try. Bye, love you.
Austin: Have fun.
Carrie: I will.
Kate: After you.
Will: Are you expecting anyone?
EJ: No. Go and see who it is.
Will: Um...Rafe, Grandpa, and some other guy.
EJ: Well, don't be rude, William. Let them in.
Roman: Will, what the hell are you doing here?
Rafe: I thought you were fired.
Will: Oh, yeah, I was, actually, but then we talked after EJ posted my bail, and I'm back. Come on in.
Roman: How you holding up? I mean, I saw the papers. Headlines had to be rough.
Will: Oh, it's okay. I don't care. They can say whatever they want. Come on in, come on in. But I guess that's--that's not why you're here.
Spencer: No. I'm Agent Spencer with the ISA. I've been assigned to oversee the investigation into Mr. DiMera's death. I was hoping to check in with the mayor personally. Is he home?
EJ: He's right here. Uh, Agent Spencer?
Spencer: Mr. Mayor.
EJ: I'm very happy that you're in charge of this investigation.
Spencer: You are?
EJ: The Salem Police Force have proven themselves to be quite impotent when it comes to finding my father's killer. I hope you can do a better job. Do you have any new leads on the suspect?
Rafe: All depends on you, EJ.
EJ: And how is it that I can help you find my father's killer?
Rafe: Well, in cases like these, we find it helps to have an open line of communication with the immediate family.
EJ: I'm the son of the victim, so I'd rather hope you would keep me in the loop.
Rafe: No, right, right, of course, which is...it's normal, that people say that, but, from my experience, once, you know, people start talking and then answering the questions, they become...uncomfortable, they get defensive, they put walls up when they feel like their privacy's been compromised.
EJ: I don't see any wagons circling, detective, and I have absolutely nothing to hide.
Roman: Wow, if Stefano could hear you now. A DiMera with nothing to hide? Hell has frozen over.
EJ: If you have a question, I suggest you ask it.
Rafe: No, great. Is it all right if maybe we, uh, sit down?
Rafe: Oh, God, that--sorry about that. Are you--you never saw him that night, did you?
Rafe: You look a little pale, EJ. [Stammering] Must be hard to see. So, uh...is it the blood and gore, or are you truly sorry that he's gone?
Daniel: You're good. You're really good at this. I see what you're doing here.
Daniel: Yeah, you're turning the tables, accusing me of using sex.
Nicole: Uh-oh, someone's getting a little worked up, hmm? It's funny that I have to actually remind you it wasn't sex. It was a kiss. You made that very, very clear.
Daniel: I made that very clear. Yes, I did.
Nicole: Yeah, mm-hmm. It's funny, a man with your history getting all worked up over a little kiss.
Daniel: Yeah, I did. Okay, well, you know what? A kiss can tell you a lot about a person.
Nicole: Okay, then you tell me, in a showdown between the tramp and the manwhore, who's gonna come out on top?
Daniel: Wow, did you just call me a manwhore?
Nicole: You still haven't answered my question.
Daniel: [Grunts] You know, when I think about that kiss, whatever led up to it, whatever caused it to happen, that's not really what I remember.
Nicole: No? Well, what do you remember?
Daniel: The way it felt after, the heat from your body, and how, for a moment, I forgot to breathe, and the sensation of two people truly connected. Yeah, that's what I remember.
Nicole: Well, now that we're being honest...that's what I remember too.
Carrie: I don't know what we're gonna do with all this stuff. Our hotel room's so small. [Laughs]
Kate: Well, it's good, then, that Austin is out house-hunting, especially if you need a nursery, right?
Carrie: He told you that?
Kate: Austin tells me everything. You know, he even showed me the specs for one of the houses that you're considering. You know, that is a true talent, to be able to look at something and judge its true worth.
Carrie: [Chuckles nervously]
Kate: Well, anyway, with the way the market is right now and interest rates, I think it's a perfect time to put in an offer.
Carrie: I just--I don't want to take on more than we can handle, you know? It's so much work and responsibility.
Kate: Commitment. I know. Well, you're not going to be alone. I am going to see you through this entire pregnancy, Carrie.
Carrie: Thank you.
Kate: I only want what's best for you and Austin.
Carrie: You have been so generous already. Thank you, Kate.
Kate: Well, it doesn't really stop with the clothes, because there is something else that I want you to have.
Carrie: Kate! When--is this what you were up to when you said you had to check in with work? You didn't have to do this.
Kate: Well, I wanted to give you something with real meaning behind it. So go ahead, open it.
Carrie: Okay. [Laughs] Presents! [Laughter] What's this?
Kate: Well, I would consider it a warning of what stands to happen to you if you cheat on my son with that loser, Rafe Hernandez.
Carrie: You think Rafe and I are--
Kate: I don't think. I know, Carrie.
Carrie: No, Kate, you're wrong. There is nothing going on with Rafe and me.
Kate: Well, I should hope not. I mean, you are pregnant, after all.
Carrie: Yes, and this is Austin's baby.
Kate: Well, I have no doubt of that. Otherwise, I wouldn't be sitting here.
Carrie: [Scoffs] Then why did you even bring up Rafe? What did Austin tell you?
Kate: He didn't have to tell me anything. I know what I saw today.
Kate: When? When Rafe walked into the pub.
Carrie: Nothing happened.
Kate: Come on, please, don't even waste your breath. I saw the way you looked at him, I saw the way he looked at you, and to deny it only makes it worse, Carrie. You know, I don't know if Austin loves you so much that he's just willing to turn the other cheek, or I don't know if having this baby has lulled him into a false sense of security regarding you, but not me.
Carrie: You're turning this into something that it's not.
Kate: I wish that was true. You see, I know what it's like to have feelings for another man, and I also know the damage it can cause, and I am not going to let you do that to my son. Not again. You almost destroyed him when you had an affair with Mike Horton, do you remember that?
Carrie: I'm not having an affair with Rafe, okay? I couldn't. I'm not that girl anymore.
Kate: You see, that's where you're wrong. You are that girl, Carrie. You always will be.
EJ: You have some nerve. You come in here and you ask me if I'm sorry for my father's death.
Rafe: Sorry, I--see, what'd I tell you? I told you, some of the questions that I have to ask you, they might upset you, EJ.
EJ: You're overstepping your boundaries, and you seem to have forgotten that I can make one phone call and have you thrown off this force.
Spencer: Perhaps you're forgetting, Mr. Mayor, that you're still a prime suspect in this case.
EJ: According to who? These monkeys? The same two who thought that William here was the prime suspect 24 hours ago. If you've just come here to irritate me, I suggest you leave.
Spencer: Actually, we came to discuss one particular matter with you.
EJ: Really, what's that?
Roman: Well, as we previously discussed, Stefano recently revised his will, cut you out, disinherited you from the family fortune, and you know what? He was just about to sign it.
Rafe: And then someone stopped him.
EJ: Yeah, well, it wasn't me. Now get those bloody things out of my sight. As I explained to the commissioner already, my father was cutting people in and out of his will all the time. It means nothing.
Roman: Unless this time's different.
Spencer: And we were hoping to hear that from you.
EJ: Your involvement in this investigation evidently brings very little to the table. There are real suspects out there, Agent Spencer. Real people with real axes to grind, and yet your investigation seems to focus on me.
Spencer: We're considering every angle.
EJ: No, you're not. You come here into my house and you accuse me of my father's murder while I not only mourn my father, but I mourn my sister. Let me ask you a question. Could you shoot your father in the heart? Hmm? Could you? Right. And yet you stand here and you accuse me of this heinous crime. Get out of my house, the lot of you. Get out! What are you looking at?
Nicole: Looks like our cards are on the table.
Daniel: It appears so.
Nicole: Mm-hmm. Well, I'm no saint, but it turns out, in spite of the white coat, neither are you.
Daniel: Never said I was.
Nicole: [Laughs] No. No, but people still see you that way, and I bet that they line up outside your door just to gaze into those eyes while you do everything you can to make them feel better.
Daniel: I do what I can.
Nicole: I bet you do. So tell me, Doctor, the other day, did we break any doctor-patient rules?
Daniel: Huh. Well, now, here's the problem. Technically, you're really not my patient anymore.
Nicole: Then what am I to you?
Daniel: Well, I think of you more as a, um... co-conspirator.
Nicole: A co-conspirator?
Nicole: I like it.
Spencer: Well, you really threw EJ for a loop accidentally letting him see those photos.
Roman: You certainly put him on the defensive. He lost control for a minute.
Rafe: Yeah, I'm just sorry Will was there to see it.
Roman: Yeah, I know. I hate that he's working for that son of a bitch.
Rafe: Aw, Sami can't be okay with that, can she?
Roman: No, uh-uh, uh-uh. I mean, damn, the kid's got enough on his plate. He doesn't need to be in the middle of this.
Spencer: Whatever this is, we still have no proof whatsoever that EJ is the one that murdered Stefano.
Rafe: Yeah, well, guilty or not, I just hope that Will sees EJ for who and what he really is...before it's too late.
EJ: My father died in this house--in this house! Coming here...accusing me of this, accusing me of that.
Will: I'm sorry about that.
[Glass slamming on table]
EJ: So am I, William. So am I.
Will: Where are you going?
EJ: I have to get ready for a meeting.
Will: You want me to wait here?
EJ: No. When you've finished organizing those files, show yourself out.
Carrie: Kate, I am committed to my marriage to Austin. Wh--what do you want from me?
Kate: I just want you to stay in the right bed. Then we won't have a problem.
Carrie: You can keep this, 'cause you won't need it.
Kate: I'm not so sure.
Carrie: This really is none of your business. You do know that, right?
Kate: I know that I've heard excuses, and I've heard denials, and I've heard you say how committed you are to my son, but I have never once heard you say that you're in love with him. I've had my sons torn apart by the Brady girls before, and I am not going to sit by idly and let it happen again.
Daniel: Mm. Damn, look at that. I've got to go.
Nicole: I get it. Live to save lives.
Daniel: Yeah, you're never more alive than when you're close to death. I'll see you again.
Nicole: If you're lucky.
Daniel: [Laughs] If you're lucky.
Daniel: All right. [Sighs] [Exhales heavily]
Roman: Well, you accomplished what you set out to do. You rattled EJ's cage.
Spencer: What's next?
Rafe: Now...we wait.
Spencer: For what?
Rafe: For EJ to make a mistake.
Spencer: [Chuckles] Think he will?
Roman: Yeah, if we're lucky.
Rafe: Yeah, and hopefully that mistake's gonna tell us exactly why he murdered his father.
