Kate: Stefano? You're going to ruin your eyes. Now, Cook wants to know whether we are going to eat in or out.

Stefano: Whatever you decide is fine with me.

Kate: I'm not an expert, but if you move that Knight, don't you expose your Queen?

Stefano: You're right.

Kate: Are you going to tell me what's wrong?

Stefano: [Sighs] Nothing.

Kate: Liar. The only reason I know that move is because you drummed it into my head. So, if you're making a basic mistake like that, that means you're upset.

Stefano: No, I'm just trying to figure out whether we should go out to dinner or not.

Kate: Uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh. No, no. No, you're thinking about what Alice Horton put in that envelope. You don't want to be thinking about that, but you are.

Stefano: You know, I don't like when you tell me what I'm thinking... especially when you're right.

Kate: Then let's put a positive spin on it. I know that you're upset, but it's nothing compared to the hell--the very special hell-- that you have created for Marlena and John.

Stefano: And Bo and Hope.

Kate: [Laughs] And Bo and Hope. And now John and Hope are married. And the past is coming back to haunt them.

Bo: Why hasn't Carrie gotten back to us? She knows how important this is to us.

Hope: I'm sure she's doing the best she can.

Bo: How hard can it be to find out what it takes to get a marriage annulled? It's got to be open and shut. Not like either of you are going to contest this.

John: No, not at all, but it might be a little more complicated than that. This marriage certificate was filed and registered in Alemania.

Bo: So?

John: Well, it means there's a lot more red tape Carrie's going to have to cut through.

Hope: Okay. The red tape is frustrating. But once Carrie gets some answers, I mean, it should only be a matter of filing papers, right? And this whole ridiculous situation's going to be well behind--you know, one day we're going to laugh about this... maybe.

Marlena: I'm not so sure about that.

Madison: Hey, it's me again. This is, like, the fifth message I've left for you. Um, I really need to talk to you, so call me back as soon as you can, please?

[Knock at door]

Brady: Hi.

Madison: Brady, what are you doing here?

Brady: Well, I kind of wanted to surprise you.

Madison: Oh, well you did that. Oy.

Brady: I'm--I'm sorry. Were you in the middle of something?

[Knock at door]

EJ: Yeah?

[Door opens, closes]

[Lock clicks]

Nicole: Hey. There you are.

EJ: Hey.

Nicole: Uh, your father was brooding over his chessboard, so I thought I'd come up here and we could go over this.

EJ: Yeah, sounds like a good idea.

Nicole: Your father's not the only one brooding, is he? Okay, well, I don't know if polls will exactly cheer you up, but they're not as bad as they could be. Here...

EJ: Nicole, I really don't want to talk about polls right now--thank you.

Nicole: Well, you have to, EJ.

EJ: No, I don't, because as of this moment, darling, I'm not running for mayor.

Nicole: Um--wha--what do you mean you're dropping out of the race? Okay, so--so, the polls aren't as great as we hoped, and, you know, the debate didn't go as well as we hoped it would. But--and so what? Abe gave you bad questions...

EJ: Nicole, I'm not dropping out of the race. I'm not dropping out of the race.

Nicole: But you just said you were.

EJ: No, no, I said that "as of this moment, I'm not running for mayor."

Nicole: Okay.

EJ: I just--I don't want to talk about politics anymore, okay? I don't want to talk about statistics or polls. I'd like to talk about... how beautiful my wife is.

Nicole: Really?

EJ: Really, yeah. Really. So my P.R. person... can go somewhere else.

Nicole: Oh, okay. Okay, bye, P.R. person.

[Both chuckle]

EJ: I don't want to talk about politics. I'd rather focus on more, um, domestic issues.

Nicole: Mmm. Well, domestic issues are always central to a successful campaign.

EJ: I'm glad we're on the same page.

Nicole: Mmm. In one department, I think we're always on the same page.

Madison: [Scoffs] No. I was actually at the end of something. I was leaving a message for one of my distributors.

Brady: Uh-huh. These are yours.

Madison: These are so beautiful. Oh, my gosh, thank you.

Brady: Glad you like them. So... can I assume, then, that you're free?

Madison: Um, I'm free.

Brady: Good, because you have a very important date planned.

Madison: Do I?

Brady: Mm-hmm.

Madison: Huh. Must've skipped my mind. I don't know.

Brady: Check.

Madison: Let me check my schedule. Says here I have a meeting with the CEO of Titan Industries, but that's not you anymore, is it?

Brady: You're going to make this difficult for me, aren't you?

Madison: Well, what did you-- you just thought you'd show up here, and I would drop everything and just be able to go now?

Brady: I kind of did. I kind of did, and if you don't hurry up, we're going to be late for our reservation.

Madison: You made a reservation? You're awfully sure of yourself, aren't you?

Brady: Yep. And that is one of the things I thought you liked about me.

Madison: One of many.

Stefano: I like the way you always put a positive spin on things. Mr. and Mrs. John Black, Bo and Hope-- they really must be going through hell now.

Kate: Thanks to you.

Stefano: [Chuckles] But you're wrong about me. I've come up with a different conclusion.

Kate: Okay. Which is?

Stefano: Okay. That there's nothing to worry about as far as what Alice has put in that envelope, okay? You know the old adage-- "what you don't know can't hurt you."

Kate: Okay, so we'll agree not to talk about the elephant in the room.

Stefano: So... how's work going?

Kate: Well, I mean, surprisingly enough, it turns out that I'm actually glad I hired Sami.

Stefano: Really?

Kate: Mm-hmm. Yes, yes, I am. I mean, along with bringing along some of Madison James' secrets, she also has some good ideas of her own.

Stefano: Yeah, well, I can believe that. I mean, she is her mother's daughter.

Marlena: I'm sorry not to be more optimistic, but we all know Stefano. The worst thing we can do is underestimate him. I'm sure he thought long and hard about what went into that envelope.

Hope: Yes, I understand that. But the marriage can be annulled. It didn't mean anything. What he was planning to do to John and me--it didn't work. This--it isn't worth the paper it's printed on. What?

Bo: Well, it's not like Stefano to count on this piece of paper to hold its value.

John: Yeah, I think we need to consider the possibility that there's more to this than we think. Doc's right. He can't be underestimated.

Bo: So we go talk to him, tell him we have this and that we think it's worthless.

John: And see how he reacts.

Bo: What have we got to lose?

Marlena: John, wait a minute.

John: Doc, he expected Hope to open that envelope. He expects us to pay him a visit. We got to do this.

Marlena: I agree. I think we should all go together.

[Doorbell rings]

Stefano: Now, you understand, when I talk about intelligence, you are way, way above her.

Kate: Oh, my darling, I am not jealous. I just don't think Sami is anything like her mother.

Bo: No need to show us in, Harold.

John: Yeah, we know the way.

Kate: Oh.

Stefano: [Sighs] And I thought tonight might be boring.

Hope: Good evening.

Kate: Oh, I just love it when friends drop by. Gee, let's pop some corn.

Hope: You think this is funny. We don't.

Stefano: You seem upset. Mrs. Brady... I did try to warn you.

Kate: Darling, a little delicacy--can you imagine how devastating the news of this marriage must be... to John.

Stefano: I tell my wife everything. It's the basis for a good marriage. Don't you and John-- I mean Bo-- discuss everything, huh? I mean, what a horrible way for him to find out what you did-- I mean, totally horrible.

EJ: You still thinking about politics, hmm?

Nicole: Uh, no, just about how some of the things we just did might shock your constituency.

EJ: Oh, I don't give a damn about my constituency at the moment. Just you. [Clicks tongue]

Nicole: Well, that's a good thing.

EJ: It is a good thing.

Nicole: Yeah.

EJ: Nicole?

Nicole: Yes?

EJ: I just want you to know that... I know how lucky I am... to be here with you... to have you in my life.

Nicole: This is true.

EJ: I'm not going to do anything to risk losing you.

Nicole: Implying that I might?

[Both laugh]

EJ: We're cut from the same cloth, you and me. Can you imagine... you and I the first family in Salem? My goodness.

Nicole: Yeah, actually, I can. We're gonna knock 'em dead.

EJ: Yeah?

Nicole: Yeah.

EJ: Yeah?

Nicole: Mm-hmm.

Brady: Wow. Maybe we should order in tonight.

Madison: I didn't do all this for room service, buddy.

Brady: [Laughs] Come here. You, you are beautiful.

Madison: You are just saying that because you're hoping to get lucky later.

Brady: Well, yeah, I am, actually, but, um... let me help you.

Madison: Thank you.

Brady: Actually, you know what? I don't know. It's a shame to cover all that up with a coat, though.

Madison: Brady, can I ask you something?

Brady: Mm-hmm.

Madison: What would you have done if you had shown up here, completely unannounced, and I was otherwise engaged? My life is more than Titan and Mad World, you know?

Brady: Oh, I know.

Madison: You do seem to be a little all play and no work these days.

Brady: Ah, come on, you got a problem with that?

Madison: Uh, no.

Brady: Good. Hey. I know that one of the main reasons that you turned down the Titan job is so that we could spend more time with each other, and I appreciate that so much.

Madison: I thought you were encouraging me to take the job.

Brady: I was, but... [Sighs] I just want you to be happy. That's all I want. No regrets?

Madison: No regrets. No.

Nicole: Mm. You know what I am right now?

EJ: [Chuckles] Really? You're gonna have to give me a couple of minutes.

Nicole: No. [Laughs] I'm hungry.

EJ: Oh, hungry.

Nicole: Yes.

[Both laugh]

EJ: Yeah, me too--I'm pretty hungry.

Nicole: Good. Now that you've taken complete advantage of me...

EJ: Mm-hmm.

Nicole: It's time for you to buy me some dinner.

EJ: Is that right?

Nicole: Yes, it is. Save room for dessert. Okay, I'm going.

EJ: [Sighs deeply]

Madison: Wow, you really pulled out all the stops, Brady. It's beautiful.

Brady: I'm glad you like it. As you recall, this is, uh--this is where we first met. Do you remember? I thought you were the hostess, for God's sake.

Madison: How could I forget?

Brady: Mm-hmm. And do you know what I remember most about that day? Was that you played along so well and made a fool out of me. Remember that?

Madison: Well, if I had been the hostess, I would have done a better job. We don't even have menus here.

Brady: No, we don't have menus, Madison, because I went ahead and ordered all your favorite foods.

Madison: You're so sweet.

Brady: Ah.

Man: Par exemple.

Madison: That is my favorite champagne, because it's the best in the world.

Brady: Well, only the best will do tonight. That's it.

Man: There are several more bottles on ice, just as you ordered.

Madison: Several more?

Brady: Well, you know, I'm prepared for anything. I wanted this to be a night that you remember.

[Cork pops]

Brady: [Chuckles] I love that sound.

Madison: Thank you.

Man: You're welcome.

Brady: Thank you. A toast... [Sighs] To the most beautiful woman I've ever met.

Bo: Your games are not going to work, even if that marriage certificate is valid.

Stefano: Well, of course it is. But you already know that, otherwise you would not be here.

John: Regardless, you know, what I'm curious about is... what's in it for you? I mean, back when you had Hope and me under control, I mean, you could have done some real damage, but what, now-- after all these years?

Hope: Bo is my husband. Marlena is John's wife. That piece of paper is just an annoying technicality. So, as soon as we take care of it, it'll be as if it never existed.

Stefano: Yeah, but it's really what's in your heart that really counts, isn't it?

Kate: He doesn't really believe that.

Stefano: [Chuckles evilly] Well, look, as long as everything is in perfect order, you certainly don't need me, now, do you?

Marlena: I don't understand why you think this is such a great little bargaining chip? We knew about it. We've dealt with it. We've moved on. This is really ancient history.

Stefano: Is it?

Marlena: Yes, it is. And it can be dealt with quite legally.

Stefano: Well, then if that's the case, there was no reason to lock it up all those years ago.

Bo: You're right.

Stefano: If you really believed that, you wouldn't be here now, would you?

Madison: Everything was amazing, Brady. Thank you so much.

Brady: Well, I'm glad you liked it. But the truth is, I was kind of buttering you up a little bit, 'cause I do have something to ask you.

Madison: Oh, you do?

Brady: Yeah.

Madison: I figured. That's what this is all about-- the beautiful dinner and the flowers and candles? You're going to try to woo me over to Basic Black, aren't you?

Brady: If I had the money to pay you and my grandfather wouldn't kill me, yeah, I would do that in a heartbeat, but, no. It has nothing to do with Basic Black or business.

Madison: Really?

Brady: Time is funny, isn't it? I mean, it's--it's a funny thing. Most people would think we haven't known each other for a long time.

Madison: Well, we really haven't.

Brady: Yeah, but... I feel like I've known you forever. When we met, we were both pretty beaten up, huh? A little wary?

Madison: Yeah. I'd say that's true.

Brady: I mean, for me, I'd pretty much given up on the idea of finding, you know, anyone. Madison, I think about you all the time... all the time. I mean, I... think about you when I wake up, and I always wake up happy now. I was at a red light yesterday, and there was this guy honking at me behind the red light because I was sitting there thinking about you and something you had said the other night and how beautiful you looked, and I got caught up in it. I forgot I was on the road, and... I don't think about work 24-7 anymore. I think about you.

Madison: Brady.

Brady: And I just think when you know something is right... it's perfect, and you need to act on it. And I-I just feel like I need to act on it. And I know I haven't known you for that long, but... no one's ever made me feel the way you make feel. And I don't think I'm ever going to find that again. So... [Exhales sharply] Madison... will you marry me?

Madison: [Exhales deeply] Uh, this is the last thing that I expected, Brady.

Brady: I love you.

Madison: I love you too, Brady... more than you will ever know. Come here.

EJ: Does that bother you?

Nicole: No, no, why would it?

EJ: Nicole... hmm?

Nicole: Okay...

EJ: Maybe?

Nicole: Maybe a little.

EJ: A little? Okay. It's okay.

Bo: We're here to find out what you think you're going to gain from all this.

Stefano: [Sighs] Nothing. But have already forgotten how I tried to convince you and your wife not to open that box? Or I mean the woman that you thought was your wife. Well, I-I'm sure she'll be your wife again. I presume, once that you get the marriage she's in now annulled, so...

Kate: So are you two kids going to write your own vows this time around?

Marlena: Katie, Katie.

Stefano: Although...

John: Although what?

Stefano: Well, although, I mean, when you start this business about the, um, annulment, it could bring up the other question.

John: Really? Like what?

Stefano: Well, you know something? I really would love to tell you, but I don't think anybody here really cares to hear about it.

Kate: Oh, no, I do. I just can't wait to hear.

EJ: That bothers you? Hmm?

Nicole: Yes. But not because I want to be with Brady.

EJ: No, but, you know...

Nicole: I mean, they're obviously getting engaged.

EJ: So it bothers you that Brady's getting married again?

Nicole: No, no. Come on, you know how badly I react to other women being happy.

EJ: But she's not going to be happy, sweetheart. She's marrying Brady.

Nicole: Well, she seems happy.

EJ: Uh-huh, yeah. She's crying... sort of the preview for the rest of her life.

Nicole: She is crying because she's thrilled... because this is the most wonderful moment in her life, filled with love, hope, and happiness and promises and--

EJ: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. And it's all downhill from here.

Brady: Oh, it looks like we have an audience. Great.

Nicole: Oh, goodness, they see us.

EJ: Yeah. Really? That's the worst thing about being a politician--is you have to go and be nice to people.

Hope: So... just what is it you think we don't want to hear?

Stefano: Well, it's not so much hearing as, um, admitting.

John: Admitting what?

Stefano: Well, the discovery that you and Hope were-- are married will rekindle Bo's anxiety about you having made love to his wife once... and also rekindle his anger, knowing that it didn't come out too good, you know?

Bo: You're right. He is a son of a bitch.

Stefano: Bo, if you remember, I tried to keep this a secret so that you would not have to worry that Hope was thinking about John when she was making love to you and that it wasn't too good on your part.

Bo: You are a bastard.

Marlena: Stefano, we know what you're trying to do. It's not going to work... not this time. Eighty five, now at a bid of eighty five, seventy five!

Stefano: What exactly is it that I am doing? You are here in my living room. I did not come seeking you out.

Kate: Oh, but you're always more than welcome.

Stefano: Now, look, Marlena, I really don't want to hurt you. And I know how hard that word is that's going to--

Marlena: Oh, please, don't even reach for it.

Stefano: No, but I know that your brainpower is--you can't find it in the world that is strong enough to be able to change two people, you know? Force them to do something fundamentally that they would never do.

John: Oh, shut up.

Marlena: It's not going to work, don't you get it? It's not going to work.

Stefano: I think it already is working. Eh? And I think that you, as a professional, know better. Eh? Because I can't make them get married... unless it's something that they really want to do.

Marlena: [Scoffs]

EJ: Ah, you'll have to excuse us--I'm sorry to interrupt. But we couldn't help but notice from the other side of the square, you're down on one knee, you had a ring in your hands. I hope, uh, congratulations are in order? Congratulations.

Brady: Thank you very much, EJ.

Nicole: We hope you both will be very happy.

EJ: Ms. James, Congratulations.

Madison: Thank You.

Nicole: Okay, well, I'm sure you two want to be alone. Brady, don't forget to change your status.

Madison: [Sighs] That was fun.

Brady: Yeah, that was--that was ridiculous. I'm sorry about that.

Madison: That's okay. Come on, it wasn't your fault. Do you want to have some more champagne?

Brady: Yeah, I love the champagne, but I-I actually... haven't gotten an answer from you yet.

John: You know, Stefano, we're all aware that you will do or say anything you can to destroy what Doc and I have, what Bo and Hope have.

Hope: Because you know you'll never have anything like it. We're not falling for your mind games.

Stefano: Really? [Chuckles] Well, that's what you say. I mean, I say that we're all thinking about the same thing.

Marlena: And I call it something else altogether.

Stefano: Well, whatever works for you.

Marlena: Thank you.

Kate: Really? Really? Because it all seems that you're protesting just a little too much.

Stefano: Maybe... but not the good Doctor Evans. You have decided that you do not want to be bothered that your beloved John took, uh... well, sacred vows with Hope. And then went through an entire marriage ceremony with you shortly after.

Bo: John and Hope had no idea that they were married.

Stefano: Would they tell you if they did?

John: All right, that's enough. Let's go.

Marlena: Yeah.

Hope: Holy moly. What a waste of time coming here.

Stefano: Oh, au contraire. I'm enjoying this so much, you know? And it really is very moving that you're taking this information so well. I mean, that you're all thinking like, uh, "what the hell? I mean, there's nothing to worry about."

EJ: You know, if it's bothering you, we can go somewhere else.

Nicole: No, no, I'm-- I'm fine. Brady's a part of my past. I've moved on. And I do not want to look back.

Madison: I'm sorry, Brady. Um... this is just so sudden. And I'm--I'm really overwhelmed.

Brady: No, no, that's okay. It's okay. I'm not--I'm not pressing. I, uh-- you should take all the time you need.

Madison: I'm sorry. I know you're disappointed.

Brady: Madison, you could-- you could never disappoint me.

Madison: I'm not sure that's true.

Brady: Did you think I was upset because you're not answering my question?

Madison: Brady...

Brady: You're not. You're not disappointing me. I mean, how--come on, how can a guy be disappointed when I've just asked you to take one of the biggest steps you'd ever take in your life-- a step that you thought you'd never take?

Madison: You're right.

Brady: Well, I understand. Madison, I get it, because I never thought I would take that step again either. But finding you... falling in love with you-- it's changed everything for me.

Madison: For me--for me too. Everything has changed since I met you.

Brady: It's okay. I, uh... I meant what I said. And I--yeah, I hoped you'd say "yes," you know, tonight, but I honestly did not expect you to say... "yes" tonight.

Madison: Yeah.

Brady: We have all--I want you to take your time.

Madison: It was--it was a bit of a surprise. [Laughing] It was a huge, huge surprise.

Brady: Yeah, I know.

Madison: But I want you to know something. I'm really, really happy that you asked me. And I'm so touched. Really, I've never met a man as wonderful as you, Brady.

Brady: I find that very hard to believe, actually.

Madison: No, believe it. I promise you, I'll give you my answer soon, okay?

Brady: Take all the time you need... 'cause we have all the time in the world, right?

Marlena: Let's go. We found out what we came to learn.

Stefano: You have? What's that?

Marlena: The situation is exactly what we thought it was. It's a sad old man who wants to feel powerful again, so he is revisiting what he thinks are some of his past triumphs. Oh, Kate... this is just so sad.

Stefano: That's not bad, Marlena. You know, it's almost believable.

Marlena: Hey, Stefano, did you open the envelope? Did you find out what Alice has on you?

John: Come on, Doc, you don't really expect him to tell you, do you?

Hope: Oh, I don't think he's going to tell anyone. It's going to haunt you forever.

EJ: Well, clearly something is bothering you. If it's not Brady, is it me?

Nicole: Yeah, in a way, it is.

Kate: You were magnificent.

Stefano: [Chuckles] Well, I'm glad that you think so.

Kate: I do. I'm always so impressed with the way you stay one step ahead of your enemies, especially someone like John, who was at one time a formidable opponent.

Stefano: Yeah, I know, but at the end, they tried to put up a good front, you know. But I really think by the time they left, they were really shaken, okay? Yes, indeed. And, you know, this is just the beginning, because there's more, much more, to come that they don't know anything about.

Kate: Really?

Stefano: Mm, yes. See, the road to that annulment is fraught with peril. And, uh... well, who knows, you know? By the time they get it, maybe they won't even want it.

Kate: That's all you're going to tell me, isn't it?

Stefano: Stay tuned.

Kate: [Gasps] I will.

Stefano: Mwah.

Kate: I will.

Stefano: Thank you, sweetheart.

Kate: Okay, I am going to tell Cook that we are eating in tonight, because I am not going to share you with anyone else tonight.

Stefano: Okey-dokey.

Madison: [Chuckling softly] Mmm. That was certainly a night that I will never forget. You can surprise me like that anytime you want.

Brady: Oh, thank you.

[Both laugh]

Madison: Aren't you going to come in?

Brady: No, not tonight.

EJ: It is me. Okay... have I--have I done something to disappoint you?

Nicole: EJ, it's not something you can help. Ever since I was a little girl, I always wanted that storybook romance. You know, the thing that only happens in fairy tales, where the Prince rides up on his white horse and he sweeps me off my feet. But that's--it's... God, that only happens in childhood fantasies, EJ.

Bo: You know what? Next time I propose to go over there and confront the old bastard, someone talk me out of it.

Marlena: Remember, the worst thing we can do at this point is let him know that he's got us worried.

[Cell phone ringing]

John: Excuse me. John Black. Mm-hmm. Yeah, I see. Thank you.

Hope: What is it?

John: This isn't going to be as easy as I thought.

Stefano: [Sighs] [Sighs]

Hope: Oh, I don't think he's going to tell anyone. It will haunt you forever, Stefano.

Brady: Look, I want you to know it's not that I don't want to come in. I just think you need some time alone, without any... distractions, to think about what I said... and to decide what your answer is going to be.

Madison: Maybe you're right.

Brady: And one more thing... I love you. And no matter what you decide, that is not going to change... ever. Good night, beautiful.

Madison: Good night. [Sighs]

Ian: Hello, my darling. I've been waiting for you.
