Madison: You're awake. It's morning? What is it?
Brady: Hi. Well, yeah, I'm awake.
Brady: Of course, I'm awake now. How are you?
Madison: I'm good. I just didn't want to leave for work before to snuggle.
Brady: Snuggle? You call that snuggling?
Madison: Oh, yeah? What's that? Mmm.
Sami: Hi, John.
John: Samantha... didn't expect to see you here.
Sami: Oh, you know, I wanted to say hi to grandma and grab a cup of coffee on my way to work.
John: Sydney like her party?
Sami: Oh, yeah. Are you kidding? She loved it--loved being the center of attention. Wonder where she gets it.
John: Your mother and I were really glad to be included.
Sami: Um, I should thank you again. That doll carriage-- Sydney loves it. It's incredibly beautiful.
John: Ah. Well, your mom had a blast picking it out. She didn't have to worry if it was too big or fragile to ship. She's really looking forward to all the tea parties and games of hide-and-seek and the things that she wished could have been there for you and Eric when you were little.
Sami: Yeah. I'll bet.
John: Uh, so I heard you're working for Kate. How's that going?
Sami: What do you mean by that?
Carrie: Oh! Ah, oh! Uh, George, can I call you back, please? Okay, bye. Oh, man. Oh! [Groans in frustration] Oh, damn it! Damn, damn, damn.
Rafe: Good morning to you too.
Carrie: Would you please, please come help me with this? Oh, my God.
Carrie: Oh. Oh.
Rafe: You're here early.
Carrie: I was trying to follow a lead that my dad gave me, and... I should have had some coffee first.
Carrie: I can't believe this mess. Oh, man.
Rafe: You, uh, want to tell me what's really going on?
Carrie: [Sighs] Austin and I had another big fight, only this time... he stormed out, and he didn't come back. And I have no idea where he is.
Abigail: Austin. Austin.
Austin: Hi... Abigail. [Sighs heavily]
Abigail: Are you okay?
Austin: [Chuckles] Other than a stiff back, yeah, I'm great... [Sarcastically] Really great.
Abigail: Have you been here all night, Austin? What's going on?
Austin: Well, I guess the secret's out.
Abigail: What are you talking about?
Austin: Just that... you know, every once in a while, I like to come here and, um, sleep on the couch in... my office. I would kill for a cup of coffee right now.
Abigail: Oh, okay, well, I'll go get you one.
Austin: No, no, no, Abby. That's--that's fine. That's not your job.
Abigail: Austin, I don't mind.
Austin: Please, just stay. Okay? [Sighs]
Abigail: Is everything okay?
Austin: Yeah. Things are so good. Everything's fine. Couldn't be-- all right... Carrie and I had an argument. I came here. I crashed out on the couch. I haven't checked in with her... so I think it's safe to say that things are definitely... not okay.
Rafe: Look, Carrie, every couple has fights.
Carrie: [Sighs] I know. But this was different. We said such rotten things to each other, and then he just left. And I lay awake in bed for hours, waiting for him. Finally, I just got up, got dressed, and came over here. I'm sorry. I shouldn't be acting this way.
Rafe: No, hey, hey, why not? Why not? It's okay. You can tell me what happened, all right?
Carrie: I knew he was mad at me.
Rafe: Because of Sydney's party? Ah.
Carrie: Yeah, but that was just the cherry on the sundae of a very messed-up week. No--month. It's been longer than that. Ever since I decided to take John's case, Austin thinks that I have time for everything but him.
Rafe: Okay. Well, I'll talk to Austin. I'll explain to him what happened, okay?
Carrie: No, don't.
Rafe: No, this is my fault. Sami was all jammed up at work. I asked you to help me, ok? Let me just--
Carrie: Please don't. You'll only make things worse.
John: If I came off sounding nosy, that wasn't my intention.
John: I want to talk about your job, it's fine. The only reason I asked is because... I actually care, honey.
Carrie: I didn't mean to jump all over you, then.
John: That's all right. I know you got a lot on your mind.
Sami: Then the answer to your question is, it's actually-- it's going really well.
John: You working for Kate?
Sami: I know, I know. You can see the pigs flying. It's going well. She actually works really well with me. She listens to me. She respects my opinion.
John: Well, maybe she's mellowed--who knows? Stranger things have happened.
Sami: Ain't that the truth.
Sami: I just wish I had a 48-hour day, you know, 'cause then I could get it all done. As it is, I'm used to being, um, a really hands-on mom, and I haven't been able to do that lately. I didn't even get to help plan Sydney's party, really.
John: Huh. Uh, can I just kind of throw something out there?
John: You know, when you were the same age as your twins are now... I was the one... I was the one that took you to school, bandaged your knees, made you mac and cheese, played dolls with you... 'cause your mother wasn't there. I know you resent that to this very day.
Sami: I know that's not her fault.
John: Still, you missed her. And for my part, I wasn't there as much for Brady as I should have been, and that's one of the biggest regrets of my life.
Sami: What are you saying?
John: I'm saying that you are a wonderful mom. You're the room mother. You host all the sleepovers. You cheer at the soccer games. Now, Will--he's old enough that, you know, you can step back. But Johnny, Allie, Sydney-- they need their mother. They need her now. So, if you find that this job is getting in the way of that, you might want to ask yourself... if it's worth it.
Rafe: Carrie, you know that I would never want to cause any problems for you, right?
Carrie: I know.
Rafe: Okay, but if my leaning on you for Sydney's party is causing problems with you and Austin, I just want to let him know. I'm not going to ask you to do that stuff anymore, okay?
Carrie: It isn't you. It isn't you. We started having problems when John was arrested, when I realized that he knew that it was going to happen and he didn't tell me about it. And I thought that we could handle being on opposite sides. But Austin was looking at the facts, and that meant that John was guilty. I was looking at the man John is and knew that wasn't possible.
Rafe: I know.
Carrie: [Sighs] And... then I started looking at Austin and saying to myself... "Who is he? Did I even know him?" Then we decided to stay in Salem, and I thought that we could put everything behind us and build a new life together.
Carrie: I guess, in the back of my mind, I just kept thinking, "Do I really know who he is?" And I'm sure he's wondering the same thing about me right now.
Rafe: Well, when you guys were in Switzerland, you didn't have any problems, right?
Carrie: Well, you know...
Rafe: I mean, yeah, but... okay, so why'd you decide to stay here in Salem?
Carrie: It hit both of us how much we missed this place and our families.
Rafe: Yeah, families-- right, exactly. And they're great--don't get me wrong--but they do bring a lot of baggage, you know?
Carrie: This is our home, though, you know. And we both decided to get jobs, and... [Sighs] I don't know--we're still in a hotel. We--we can't even find the time to find a place.
Rafe: Well, life probably is a bit unsettled.
Carrie: Yeah. Maybe it's just the stress. Maybe it's, uh Austin trying to figure out his teaching, and I'm trying to jump-start our business.
Rafe: Doesn't leave much time for the two of you.
Carrie: But when I was in law school and I was studying for the bar, we always found time to be together. I guess... maybe what scares me the most is the fact that, uh... maybe that's not so important to us anymore.
Abigail: I'm sorry. I don't know what to say.
Austin: [Chuckles] Yeah, yeah, me neither.
Abigail: You and Carrie have been married for, like, forever, though, right?
Austin: Yeah, yeah, we're ancient.
Abigail: I didn't mean it like that, Austin.
Austin: You want some advice, Grasshopper?
Abigail: What did you just call me?
Austin: Wow. You have no idea what I'm talking about, do you?
Abigail: Okay, just tell me the advice.
Austin: People get married for a lot of different reasons. But if you're lucky, you get married because you are so in love with somebody... because life's too short to go through alone. But what they don't tell you is you could be more alone in a marriage than you ever, ever thought possible on your own.
Abigail: Uh, yeah. My mom said something like that once.
Austin: I'll bet she did... because when you're married, there's always new things for you to deal with. The two of you have to do it, but sometimes you just... you just want to take a hall pass, and you just want to say, "I don't feel... like talking about us tonight."
Abigail: Is that why you slept on the couch?
Austin: [Chuckles] Yeah, yeah, kind of. And you want to know what it got me? Absolutely nothing. Things are a lot worse this morning than they were last night. So the big lesson is... this is what happens... when married people stop talking.
Abigail: Do you think maybe that it's possible after last night that Carrie wants to work things out with you now?
Austin: No. No calls. [Sighs] I guess that's just wishful thinking.
Abigail: What is she, crazy? I mean, I just--I don't get it. She has to be nuts to not want to make this right with you.
Madison: Hey, Mr. Black.
Madison: What's going on in there?
Madison: Nothing going on in there? Hey. You can tell me anything. I know you're upset about me sending Sami in to spy at Countess Wilhelmina.
Brady: Oh, yeah, listen, I think that was crazy, but that wasn't--that was not what I was thinking about right now. I was actually thinking that the old me probably would have done the exact same thing that you did.
Madison: Oh, the old you.
Brady: Yeah, the old me that... you really never knew-- before I met you.
Madison: It's just business. Look, you know, you don't think Kate has sent someone undercover inside Mad World? Come on, really?
Brady: I just--I think I miss the old days, when I was-- I was the CEO of Titan and you had to run every freaking business decision right by me. I loved that.
Madison: Oh, yeah, those were the good old days for you, right?
Brady: I know that you like calling the shots just as much as I do. It just makes me wonder, though. I mean, what else haven't you told me, Madison James?
Madison: Titan is a major company. What I should do, then consider it done. We should get dressed.
Brady: Hey, hey, hold on. Hold on. Hold on. There is something, isn't there?
Carrie: Oh, sorry.
Rafe: Listen, Carrie, I'm gonna tell you something about guys, all right? We get mad, then we walk out the door thinking... [Chuckles] "Yeah, I showed her." Then we find ourselves standing on the sidewalk all alone. Now...
Carrie: Mm-hmm. So why didn't he come home last night, then?
Rafe: Oh, that would have been way too reasonable. But he'll be there when you get there... feeling like a jackass.
Carrie: [Laughs] Have you ever done anything like that before?
Rafe: Me? [Chuckles] No. Please, I'm way too reasonable. I just sit back and tell Sami it's all her fault.
Carrie: How was she when you came home last night?
Rafe: Oh, she was... things were a little bit frosty around the loft, yeah.
Carrie: Did you point out the fact that we were just trying to save her little girl's birthday party?
Rafe: Oh, no, no, no. It was about way more than just the party. She was furious at Will for taking Sydney over to EJ's.
Carrie: That wasn't your fault.
Rafe: Well, no. It was Will. But Will's been acting so strange lately. He can't stand EJ, and now he's working for his campaign. And I got to tell you-- I'm worried about that kid.
Carrie: Me too.
Rafe: Yeah. Anyway, Sami and I-- we got into it. I said some things too. Ever since she started this job, she's, uh... whatever.
Carrie: You--you can tell me, by the way, and it won't go any further.
Rafe: Yeah. I think her boss is using her.
Carrie: Well, she's working for Kate, which I still don't get.
Rafe: Yeah, she doesn't want to talk about it.
Carrie: I bet she doesn't.
Rafe: No. Now, Sami and I-- we used to get in these big fights...all the time. But in a way, they were great. We would work things out and see eye to eye, and now it's just-- she's doing stuff I can't even fathom, and, uh, it doesn't seem to bother her at all.
Rafe: I don't know.
Carrie: I'm afraid you're seeing a side of my sister that I, unfortunately, have a lot of experience with. I know how hard that can be.
Austin: Thanks for sticking up for me. And I know this is going to come as a shock to you, but Carrie does have plenty of reasons to be angry with me.
Abigail: Maybe she does, but still, doesn't she know how lucky she is to have you? You're a great guy. You've been unbelievably nice to me. You not only saved my life--
Austin: Don't you think you're putting it just a little too strongly, Abby?
Abigail: No, I don't. I don't. You--you always listen to what I have to say, and you take me seriously, and that means a lot to me.
Austin: And that's very nice to hear. It is.
Abigail: You're a good person, Austin.
Austin: You know what, Abby? When you say it, I almost kind of believe it. You know what? You haven't been around for a long time. And you don't know about my life. So I think it's pretty nervy of you to tell me what to do with my kids.
John: Samantha, I'm not telling you what to do. I'm just saying I'm looking back on my own life and thinking about things I would have done differently. And being there for Brady and Belle on a daily basis is at the top of the list.
Sami: Well, I'm not you.
John: I know you are. Honey--
Sami: And I will continue to be there. I still bake cookies for them, and I still cheer at soccer games. And you know what? I matter too. And this job is important to me. And it isn't just to make meet for the family while Rafe isn't making much money right now.
John: How is that working out for the two of you? I mean, you being so busy and him not?
Sami: What are you asking?
John: Let's just say I noticed a certain amount of tension between the two of you at Sydney's party. And I just wondered if maybe this job was--
Sami: It's not about the job, okay? It's not about the job at all. Did you happen to notice that EJ and Nicole were at the party too?
John: Yeah, I wondered about that also.
Sami: So now I'm messing everything up!
John: Samantha, listen, honey--
Sami: No, you know what? Obviously you think I am the kind of woman who cannot balance work and family without messing all of it up. Well, you know what? You're probably right.
Brady: I wish I could read this mind sometimes.
Madison: It'd be pretty easy, actually. There's not a whole lot going on in there except for work and you.
Brady: That's good.
Brady: Just tell me there's not going to be some giant thing that comes out of the sky that screws this up. I don't want that.
Madison: Baby, that going to happen.
Austin: Ah, yes, we are saved--caffeine.
Carrie: Well, I see he made it through the night okay.
Rafe: Okay, okay. I know I don't need to tell you not to jump to any conclusions.
Carrie: Mm-hmm. Let's get out of here before he sees us.
Rafe: Too late.
Austin: Oh, wait, wait. What's wrong?
Austin: I better go talk to her.
Carrie: Good morning. You didn't tell me that you had a date for breakfast.
Abigail: It's not a date. We just ran into each other.
Rafe: Hmm. Well, maybe we should give them some privacy.
Abigail: Carrie looks so upset.
Rafe: So what happened?
Abigail: I have a job as Austin's assistant.
Abigail: So I went to his office this morning to see if he needed anything, and there he was, sleeping on his couch.
Rafe: And you two came straight here? Well, the first thing you need to understand is Carrie's not upset at you. She was already upset before she got here, and... you just happened to be here.
Abigail: Yeah, I'm just going to get to class.
Rafe: Take care.
Abigail: Yeah, thanks.
Rafe: Mm-hmm. Hey!
Sami: Whoa. Hey.
Rafe: What are you doing here?
Sami: Oh, you know, taking a shortcut. I'm late for work.
Rafe: Are you okay?
Sami: Just a bad morning. Um, I got to go.
Rafe: Whoa, whoa, whoa. What happened?
Sami: I ran into John. You know, he took the opportunity to give me some really valuable life lessons.
Rafe: Ah. How come?
Sami: I don't know why, and I really don't have time to talk about it. I got to get to work.
Rafe: Whoa. Not till we talk.
Carrie: You walk out on me, you don't call, and you spend the night God knows where. And I worry, Austin. And then I find you here having a cheery little breakfast with your new assistant. You're not even bothered or upset by this.
Austin: Really? Really? You think that I'm not upset, huh? Abby found me sleeping on the couch in my office. Just ask her how upset I was. And this--come on. It was nice of her. Trying to cheer me up. Oh, she's trying to cheer you up? Uh-huh.
Austin: Carrie, hey, I love you. I love you. I married you. Remember?
Carrie: Then why didn't you come home?
Austin: Because I just got tired of having the same old argument. I just needed time to think and cool off. I just went to the office, sat down on the couch... and I just wanted to sleep and forget that day ever happened. You know what I mean?
Carrie: I can't believe that.
Austin: I know it. I mean, we're never even upset with each other. Before we got here, I just-- we never fight. Can we just figure this out, please?
Brady: Did you move the office or something?
John: Well, good morning!
John: Ah, no, I'm just trying to get my day organized. Office phones can't ring here.
Brady: Mm-hmm. Got a busy schedule or...?
John: Yeah, just trying to reconnect with some old clients.
Madison: Brady told me that Basic Black is relaunching its fashion line.
Madison: Just don't laugh, you hear me?
John: Yes, ma'am.
[Cell phone rings]
John: That was the first discussion that we had. [Chuckles]
John: And L.A. is alive and well. Excuse me. I got to take this. Yeah, Black here.
Madison: He's proud of you, you know? That must feel good.
Brady: It actually does.
Madison: I have to go.
Brady: You have to go? Breakfast?
Madison: No, I can't. I wasted too much time this morning.
Brady: Oh, I wouldn't call this morning a waste of time.
Madison: Oh, no, I agree. I just... just so you know... I heard everything you said about Sami... really. And I'm going to think about it.
Brady: Thank you.
Brady: Come on.
John: So what is Madison up to with Samantha?
Sami: It's a super-long story, okay? So I'll tell you later. I'll tell you tonight after work, okay?
Rafe: Just tell me what John said.
Sami: That I'm screwing up, you know--same old, same old.
Rafe: No. Why would he say that? Why?
Sami: I don't know. I just know that I am over ten minutes late for a meeting, okay?
Sami: I would love to blow it off so that I could spend the afternoon with you. But we need the paycheck.
Rafe: Yeah, right again.
Sami: It's just until you and Carrie make a huge success out of your business, right? I can sit at home all day and eat bonbons and read the tabloids.
Rafe: I can't wait for that day.
Sami: I knew it.
Sami: So we're good, right?
Rafe: Yeah, we're good.
Sami: I love you.
Rafe: I love you.
Sami: I got to go.
Rafe: I love you. Go to work.
Rafe: Don't be late.
Carrie: The thing I always felt about us is that we always wanted what the other one wanted. And when we both went back to school, we made sacrifices without a second thought. We cheered each other on.
Carrie: What you wanted, it's just what I always wanted.
Austin: But listen to you. Listen how you're talking. You're talking in the past tense.
Carrie: It's felt different since we've been back, hasn't it?
Austin: Yeah, but I always want what's best for you
Carrie: I feel the same way. But maybe what's best, maybe that's changed.
Austin: No. You want to know what it is? I was a jerk last night. You want to know why I was a jerk? Because I'm selfish, because I want you to myself. I just do. And, Carrie, you've got to admit... come on, you've been spending a lot of time with Rafe... during work... at work, after hours.
Carrie: I haven't been very considerate of you and I'm sorry for that.
Austin: Thank you.
[Cell phone rings]
Austin: Wait. You got to be kidding me. This is the department secretary. She scheduled a meeting at noon.
Carrie: It's kind of last-minute, isn't it?
Austin: I know it is, but I also have a-- I have a class. I've got to get my stuff together, but...
Carrie: Sure. Go.
Austin: No. I-- we're good, right? We're good.
Carrie: We're better than we were.
Carrie: Are you coming home tonight?
Austin: Yeah, yeah. You bet that I'm coming home I love you. And no matter what... we're going to get through this, okay? I'll see you tonight.
Brady: You see, Sami started out working for Madison. And now Sami is working for Madison's chief rival. It's not an easy situation.
John: Why? Because of the business, or is there more to it?
Brady: Well, Sami and Madison actually knew each other in grade school. They went to school together in Colorado, apparently.
John: No kidding. I didn't know that.
Brady: Yeah. Well, after Madison hired Sami, she started--well, she did a couple things that Sami didn't approve of.
John: Yeah, like what?
Brady: Like getting involved with me, for one thing.
John: What the hell? It's none of her business.
Brady: Well, she thought I'd be making decisions that wouldn't benefit her professionally. So she took off. She wanted to make it on her own.
John: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Sounds like Sami.
Brady: Kate got wind of it, made Sami an offer, and she accepted. So I was telling Madison that I'm worried 'cause of Kate's and Sami's history.
John: Good for you, son.
Brady: Madison promised me that she wasn't going to make the situation any worse.
John: I'm just worried that this job is gonna make Sami revert back to her old self and if that's the case... she could stand a chance to lose everything that's important to her.
Madison: Hi. Sorry I'm late.
Sami: I was late too.
Madison: How's it going?
Sami: Oh, good. You know, great. Taught me a lot, having seen Kate for so many years deal with her former employees. I know the drill.
Madison: Let me guess-- totally efficient and totally deferential.
Sami: Well, I'm not exactly perching on her desk, asking her who she's betting on for the Super Bowl, if you know what I mean.
Madison: So she trusts you?
Sami: Yeah, no, she trusts me as much as she trusts anyone. Right now she's entirely focused on you. And she knows that I know all your secrets. It's time to bring her down.
Madison: Good. Okay. Great. Um...
Sami: Madison... that's not quite the reaction I was expecting from you.
Madison: Listen, I, uh... I talked to Brady. He hates this whole thing. And he thinks I'm using you.
Sami: Okay, well, you're not. I mean, what does Brady know? I want to do this.
Madison: I know, but Brady filled me in on your very complicated history with Kate and the DiMera family.
Sami: Brady's got a big mouth.
Madison: Brady doesn't want to see anything happen to you. He's very worried about what Kate might do to you, and now I am too.
Sami: Listen, Madison, I can handle myself. Kate's never going to know that I was a part of this.
Madison: Look... Sami, as much as I want to topple Kate, I don't want her to hurt you. And I don't want to lose Brady. And you and I both know that if we go forward with this plan, things could happen.
Rafe: Huh. Hey.
Rafe: How'd it go?
Carrie: Well, we talked, but we were both being so careful with each other, I don't think we accomplished much. Then he got a call for a meeting, and he had to go.
Rafe: Huh. Oh, you know, I ran into Sami on the way over here. Oh, did you have any better luck than I did?
Rafe: [Sarcastically] Oh, she always has somewhere to go, people to see, and-- maybe I should go a little easier on her, right? I remember when I used to have a job like that. [Chuckles]
Carrie: I'm sorry.
Rafe: Yeah. Same here. [Sighs]
Rafe: [Clears throat] Yeah.
Carrie: I don't think we're gonna accomplish very much today.
Rafe: That's a damn shame, 'cause there's so much left to accomplish.
Carrie: [Chuckles] [Gasps] Oh.
Rafe: That's okay.
Carrie: [Laughs] Oh, no. There... you can't say today was a total waste, right?
Rafe: No, no.
Rafe: Not a total waste.
Carrie: See, I mean, at least--at least we can always make each other laugh.
Rafe: Exactly, right? There are worse things in the world. [Sighs]
Abigail: You have a departmental meeting at noon.
Austin: Yes, yes. I-I already know about it. It's the latest wisdom from Madam Chairman. I'm really glad to see you.
Abigail: You are?
Austin: Yeah. I have to apologize to you. I am really sorry that you had to witness that scene between Carrie and me.
Abigail: Oh, it's--
Austin: No, listen, it had nothing to do with you. And I want you to know that Carrie knows it.
Abigail: Well, I could call her if you want me to talk to her about it.
Austin: [Chuckles] No, I don't--I don't think-- that's not necessary.
Abigail: I'm sorry you're going through this, Austin.
Austin: Yeah, well, me too. So, listen, I just--I don't want you to think about it. I don't want you to even worry about it, okay? What a morning.
Sami: Madison James, since when have you let your boyfriend tell you how to run your business?
Madison: Brady is not trying to run things.
Sami: I don't understand why it matters what he thinks. He doesn't even work at Titan anymore.
Madison: Sami, Brady is very concerned about what Kate might do to you.
Madison: Look, he told me she's not just a competitor, shho get in her way. He's very concerned about what she might do to you. And I care about what he thinks, and I care about you. I think we should just abort this whole plan.
Sami: And then what? You just leave me there with her?
Madison: No, listen to me. I would never do that to you.
Sami: What are my options? I could quit my job and end up with no job, or I could quit my job and go back to work for you, and then she will poison me.
Madison: You're acting like you don't have a choice.
Sami: Because we don't. We are in too deep. We've gone this far. We have to see it through. I risked everything for this, Madison. You cannot leave me hanging.
