EJ: Uh, my speech for the commerce league is finished, I think.
Nicole: Well, it's about time. I have to make copies for the press.
EJ: Hmm. It's not bad, if I say so myself.
Nicole: Great. I expect comparisons to Churchill when you deliver it. And since you took away my speed writing duties, I'll take that as my cue to resign--for real this time.
EJ: Nicole, that is not what I want, and you know it.
Nicole: Well, what about what I want, EJ? We had a deal.
EJ: We had a deal, right--one which you broke very willingly, I might add.
EJ: No. What? Are we going to talk about what happened the other night?
Nicole: We talked about it to death, EJ.
EJ: Yeah, no, we did not.
Nicole: There's nothing left to talk about.
EJ: Yes, there is.
Sami: Well, I think you all were so lucky to get a room at that hotel, huh?
Austin: Well, it's probably got a lot less to do with luck than the fact that I've been calling every hour for days.
Carrie: Yeah. Well, thank you again for letting Austin stay here while I was away, and then, again, for making more room for me, when I came back from Europe.
Sami: Any time. You're my sister--family.
Austin: Well, we really appreciate it. Although, I have to admit we are looking forward to a little bit of alone time.
Rafe: Yeah, I'll bet.
Carrie: Um, and some r&r before John's trial tomorrow.
Rafe: Well, that sounds like a great plan. I've actually got a plan of my own.
Sami: You do?
Rafe: I do, yeah. Have a little party for us and the kids, at the pub.
Sami: Oh, what's the occasion?
Rafe: You'll see.
Carrie: Well, we don't want to hold you up.
Sami: Uh, no.
Carrie: Come say good-bye.
Sami: Come say good-bye, please. Hugs, hugs, hugs.
Johnny: Carrie, wait. This is for you.
Carrie: Oh, "aunt Carrie and uncle Austin--we love you and miss you. Allie, Sydney and Johnny."
[Laughing] That is so sweet.
Austin: Oh, look, look. It's a bunch of people, uh, crammed into...a room.
Johnny: It's all of us living here together. See, uncle Austin is stepping on Rafe's foot.
Rafe: Johnny must have went to the school of realism.
Carrie: Oh, well, we--we love the card, and we'll be sure to hang it up in our hotel room. Hugs.
Carrie: Yay. Ooh.
Austin: Give me a kiss.
Carrie: Thank you, thank you.
Austin: You kids have made it so special for uncle Austin and auntie Carrie.
Carrie: [Kisses] Okay.
Sami: Okay, got to let them go.
Carrie: I love this. Thank you, thank you.
Sami: Time for them to go. Okay, finish coloring.
Rafe: Don't want to lose that hotel room, do we?
Carrie: Okay, bye. Thank you, Sami.
Austin: Thanks again.
Sami: Uh, it was our pleasure.
Carrie: Okay. Got it? Thank you.
Austin: Yeah, after you.
Carrie: Got all our stuff? Bye-bye.
Austin: Have fun at the pub.
[Laughs] Break open the champagne.
Rafe: Oh, my god. Oh, come on.
Sami: They can hear you.
Rafe: Seriously, they're as happy to get out of here as we are to see them go, if that's possible.
Sami: Well, yeah, it's definitely nice to have this place alone...
Sami: To ourselves again.
Rafe: It sure is, and we are going to enjoy it later. But right now, let's head to the pub. Hey, kids. You guys ready to have some fun?
Brady: The numbers don't add up to me--that's the problem. Because I don't want to take on that much debt. All right, listen, I'll tell you what--why don't you run the projections again and get back to me? All right. Hi. What can I do for you?
Madison: Do you have a minute?
Brady: If this is about my test modeling services again, I'm going to need a compensation package this time. I want some money.
Madison: Actually, this is... kind of serious.
Brady: Well, it can't be about business advice--you made it clear that you don't want my suggestions, even though I am the CEO of the company that owns your cosmetic empire--
Madison: Brady, seriously, it's nothing to do with Mad World.
Brady: All right. Okay. I'm a little confused, because we have ground rules, right? All business.
Madison: Would you knock it off with the wise-guy routine, please?
Madison: Why are you here, Brady? Your father's going to be on trial tomorrow.
Brady: Yeah, I know, I know. I know, it's on every, uh, cable channel, newspaper, blog-- I know. It's hard to miss.
Madison: Then why are you here? Why aren't you with your dad?
John: Prosecution's going to come at me with everything they got tomorrow.
Marlena: And Carrie's working around the clock on your defense. You know what? You are so tense. I think you need some help. And I have just the idea.
[Drawer clicks opens, slides, and closes]
[Claps hands] Ghostbusters!
Marlena: [Laughs] I know. And a good night for it, don't you think?
John: Well, and not to mention, one of my favorite movies.
Marlena: I know that. I actually got this, uh, for Halloween. And then you decided to break out of here and join me in the square, so-- I don't know, how about if we order out and watch a movie?
John: Nice try.
Marlena: I know.
John: But I think you're forgetting that this is my last night as an almost-free man. And I'm really tired of not being able to take my beautiful wife out to dinner or for a little walk through that new Horton square.
Marlena: We will do it all when this trial is over, every--
John: When this trial is over, I could be spending the rest of my life in prison. Excuse me.
Marlena: Where do you think you're going?
John: Get your coat. We're going out. I'm not spending my last night of freedom here.
Marlena: Oh, yes, you are.
EJ: Nicole, come on, look. We made love the other night. In the morning, I poured my heart out to you.
Nicole: What heart?
EJ: What you told me, though, didn't ring true.
Nicole: Excuse me?
EJ: You said--you told me you're afraid? Come on. Nicole, you're not afraid of anything. Okay, you see a challenge, you run to it.
Nicole: Yeah. And I have the scars to prove it, EJ. I don't know, maybe when it concerns you, I've learned my lesson.
EJ: Obviously not. Look, you can act all remote and removed, but I know the real Nicole.
Nicole: "The real Nicole," really?
EJ: Yeah, the real Nicole. The one that I made love to the other night, and then again in the morning.
Nicole: EJ, look, we're stuck in the middle of a blizzard, all right? We needed something to do. The lights were out, the internet's down.
EJ: Oh, yeah, yeah, okay. You can pretend it didn't happen if you want to, sweetheart. But once the genie's out of the bottle, you can't exactly put it back in.
Nicole: It's more like the old toothpaste story, EJ. Once you squeeze it all out of the tube, it's just one big gooey mess.
EJ: Look... I've changed, you've changed. The situation has changed both of us, okay? Can't we just... try to make this work? Hmm? Please? What's this? Divorce papers.
Nicole: Freshly drawn. It's time, EJ... past time that we've made this official. Our marriage is over.
Madison: Look, call me crazy, but wouldn't your father...
Madison: Like a visit from his son, on the very last afternoon that he has before his trial starts?
Brady: You know, Madison, just because we shared some things about our families the other night, doesn't give you the right to--
Madison: Doesn't give me the right to do what? It doesn't give me the right to make a suggestion that would be as beneficial to you as it will be for your father?
Brady: Don't you have anything better to do than to dive into my dysfunctional family's issues, seriously?
Madison: Well, I have lots of other things to do. I have a deadline looming with Milan, but this is on the very top of my to-do list today. Brady, I'll even go with you for moral support if that's what it takes to get you there.
Brady: Wow. Wow, the busy, busy head of Mad World cosmetics is going to go with me to see my father.
Brady: Why is this important to you? I don't understand.
Madison: I don't know. It just was something that-- something you said, when we were talking, about how you never really knew your mother and... you have this less-than-perfect relationship with John.
Brady: Mm-hmm. What is it that I said?
Nicole: You were acting all cool, and like "I could care less." And underneath all that, I sensed that there was a son--really, really cares about his father. Maybe more than you're willing to admit?
Brady: Where you going?
Nicole: I said my piece. I said what I came here to say. So you can either man-up to your feelings and go see your dad... or you can be that guy who doesn't see his father on his very last evening before his trial starts. Just to be clear, Brady-- I don't even want to know that second guy.
[ Male announcer ]
What if you have potatoes?
Sami: This is quite a party.
Sami: And it's not even anyone's birthday.
Rafe: Ah, I just wanted to do a little something special.
Sami: Uh-huh. To celebrate Austin moving out.
Rafe: Well, yeah. If that's not cause for celebration, what is? And seriously-- and also I wanted us to have some time together before the trial starts.
Sami: Mmm. Man, you did it right. Dolls and baseball cards. You know how to get to those kids' hearts.
Rafe: Yeah? What about your heart?
Sami: Like you have to ask.
Rafe: You're all I've ever wanted, you know.
Sami: Me too. And more.
Carrie: Thank you for letting your mom wrangle us a hotel room finally.
Austin: Well, it wasn't easy, not even for her. Okay. I never should have let Sami talk me into giving up our hotel room... and staying with her and Rafe. I admit that I knew you wouldn't like it, and...I didn't like it that much either.
Carrie: You didn't?
Austin: No. Things got a little tense a few times, before you got back from Europe. And, um, I'm not exactly Rafe's favorite person in the world.
Carrie: Really. He seems like such an easy-going guy to me.
Austin: Why don't we just retire that subject, okay? 'Cause you've been working 24/7 on the trial, and I've found us a place that we could finally be alone together. So...what do you think it's going to take for you to relax? Maybe [Assumes accent] A little French massage, huh? Oui, oui?
Carrie: Oui, oui. Yeah, that would be a good start.
Austin: And what do you want to do the last couple of hours before the trial? You want to maybe take a drive up to the lake? Or...go hang out at Horton square?
Carrie: You're being incredibly sweet.
Austin: I just don't want there to be any doubt in your mind...about what's most important to me.
Carrie: What's that?
Austin: You. Not the trial. I just love you so much.
Carrie: Mmm. Yeah. I'm not really in the mood to go for a drive right now.
Austin: I was hoping you'd say that.
Brady: Can we see my dad. Is it a bad time?
Marlena: Couldn't be a better time.
John: Brady! Son, I am so glad that you're here. [Sighs]
Rafe: Hey, Johnny. Guess what? [Sing-songy] Got something else for ya. That's right. You didn't think the only thing I was going to give you were some unrecognizable baseball cards, did you? A hat...and jersey from your favorite team.
Johnny: [Gasps] Thanks! Way cool!
Rafe: Yeah. Way cool is right.
Sami: Whoa, whoa. Here you go, show them. Yeah. Look at him, look at how excited he is. You totally just made his day. And you made mine.
Rafe: So how about paying it forward?
Sami: What did you have in mind?
Rafe: Oh, not that. I was just thinking...
Rafe: Maybe you can go see John. You said you hadn't seen him in a while.
Sami: I thought we weren't going to talk about him, you know? Because we didn't want to get stressed out?
Rafe: N-no, I don't want to talk about him. I...just know that it would mean a lot to him and to your mom, if you went and showed a little support.
Rafe: Your grandmother is closing the pub tomorrow morning so friends and family can come here and show their support for John, before the trial. Now your dad's going to pick up John and Marlena and bring them here without the press knowing.
Sami: My dad...
Sami: Has agreed to this?
Rafe: All right, listen. I know that you have your doubts about John's innocence.
Sami: Stefano played all sorts of mind games with him, okay? So, yes, I'm sorry if I think that there's a chance that John is capable of stealing that money.
Rafe: But you don't blame him...right? Listen, I just know it would mean a lot to your mom and to John, if you showed up and... gave a little support, just like everyone else is going to do. You don't have to give me an answer right now. Just think about it... for me?
EJ: Why would you just want to slam the door on any.. possible future for us? Look, I understand that you don't trust me, okay? But why did you have to do something this drastic, hmm?
Nicole: EJ, we--we talked about this. We filed months ago. We dragged our feet--we did nothing. This isn't a real marriage, it never was.
EJ: You know, we were just separated, that's all. I don't see why we have to go through with some...big, public, high-profile divorce. And look, I'm in the middle of an election campaign. You know, I'm running against Abe--he's like father of the year, you know.
Nicole: So that's what this is about? That's--
EJ: That's not what this is about!
Nicole: EJ, I'm not stupid! As your publicist, I know that a public divorce would cost you the election. I know that.
EJ: So why are you doing it? Why are you perusing this madness? Hmm?
Nicole: All--all I want, EJ, is to just... I just want a signature on the divorce petition, okay? I won't file until the election is over. And then you can be whatever kind of husband you want to be.
EJ: If you're not going to file it, you're note going to get my bloody signature.
Nicole: This isn't a joke, EJ. I know what I want. This is what I want! It will clear the air between us, okay?
Nicole: It'll remind us of where we stand with each other.
EJ: I want this marriage to work.
Nicole: EJ, this marriage should have never happened. [Sniffles]
EJ: So I just don't get a say in it?
Nicole: Oh, you--you've had plenty to say. You always do. Could you please... just sign on the "x"s on page one, three and five?
EJ: Before I do that, you answer me this question-- did that night mean nothing to you? Nicole! You tell me that the other night meant nothing to you. Nicole, tell me.
Nicole: It was what it was. It doesn't change our dismal history, EJ. I mean, seriously. Do you really think that I would be interested in you again, after all of the horrible things that you put me through!
EJ: Come on, we had some good times, you and I.
Nicole: You mean it wasn't all yelling and screaming and--and broken vases?
EJ: No, it wasn't, all right? And it isn't. Nicole, since we started working on this campaign together, we've had more fun. And we've laughed together. I mean, come on, you got me to dress up like Elvis. Elvis! I'm speaking from my heart, Nicole. God, you are just the most... maddening, bewitching woman that I have ever met.
[Whispers] Come on. Hmm? Hey. That's my girl.
Nicole: EJ [Scoffs]--
[Sobs] You're doing it again, EJ. You're--you almost sucked me back in!
EJ: Right, because you want this just as much as I do.
Nicole: No, because you're confusing sex with everything else that people need to share! Yes, yes, sex is amazing with you. But what about all the other parts of a relationship? All the parts that we are lousy at? That is never going to change, EJ, and we both know it!
Austin: Now that's what I call quality relaxation time.
Carrie: Mm-hmm. Hmm.
Austin: Look at me.
Austin: What's going on up there?
Carrie: Just thinking how funny it is how people end up together. Do you think it's fate or random chance?
Austin: What kind of question is that?
Carrie: I don't know, just being back here, seeing all these people from the past. Just wondering how they got together and, you know--look at Jennifer. What if she had met Daniel before Jack? Would he be the father of her children? Or Maggie and Victor--I mean, it's a miracle that they found each other at this point in their lives. Then there's...Sami and Rafe.
Austin: What about them?
Carrie: I don't know, I just don't get it.
Austin: You don't get what?
Carrie: I don't know, she's always going on about how happy they are, but...all I ever see is them fighting.
Austin: Well, Carrie, I mean, they've been under a lot of stress lately. And we've been over there driving them crazy. But they seem to me like they're on solid ground.
Carrie: You think so?
Austin: Hey. I just spent a lot of time over there, remember? And, yeah, I mean, for sure, those two are...in it for the long haul.
Carrie: With other couples, I--I can just see the connection, even if they're opposites. Like Bo and hope--they just fit. But I've been working with Rafe lately, and he's just such a straight shooter, and Sami's, you know-- I love my sister, but--
Austin: Look, some things just can't be reasoned out with that finely-tuned legal mind of yours. The only couple I care about is us. So why don't you tell me how you think we fit.
Brady: I will admit it took some butt-kicking to get me here.
Marlena: Hey, you're here. And that is all that matters.
Brady: Introductions--uh, Madison, this is my father John Black.
Madison: Very nice to meet you, sir.
Brady: And his wife Marlena, whom you've already met.
Marlena: Yes. Nice to see you again. My daughter's very fond of working for your company.
Madison: Oh, that's very nice to hear. It's nice to see you as well.
John: Yeah, it's a real pleasure to meet you. You know, I heard that your company and titan have partnered up?
Madison: Actually, titan owns my company Mad World.
Brady: Yeah, but we both know who the real boss is.
John: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've been doing a lot of reading lately, and the journals are really singing your praises. You know, doc here is one of your biggest fans.
Madison: Really? You know, I'd love to get your opinions on some of our new products.
Marlena: Oh, good. I love giving my opinions.
Marlena: In fact, if you're both free tonight, we could maybe get some supper. Or Madison and I could go down to the square and pick up some take out food.
Brady: Uh, sure. If it's okay with you.
Madison: Oh, it sounds great. And I'll quiz you on the products, on the way down.
Marlena: Great. Um, yeah. Would you mind staying with John?
John: Oh, that's not--not--
Brady: No, that's--that would be fine, actually.
Marlena: Good. Be right back.
[Keys jingle] Thank you.
[Door clacks shut]
John: So I assume that...Madison administered the butt-kicking it took to get here?
Brady: You assume correctly. Yeah, dad, look. Um... I would've--I would've come earlier, I would've come sooner--
John: No explanations necessary. All that matters to me right now is that you are here.
[ Flamenco guitar music plays ]
Brady: You know, dad, I want you to know that even though I haven't...come to see you before now, it doesn't mean I think you're guilty. And it certainly doesn't mean that I haven't been thinking about you.
John: I know that. Being cooped up here, I've watched a lot of TV news. Couldn't help but notice that titan has gone a little easier on me than the rest of your competitors.
Brady: Well, you're my dad.
John: Not always the one you wanted or deserved. But that's on me, that's not on you.
Brady: No, you don't--you don't have to be hard on yourself that way.
John: Why not? I was hard enough on you. Wasn't very supportive during our phone calls, when I was in Switzerland. I know that got under your skin. Should have listened to you more, son. Shouldn't have been so damn judgmental.
Brady: I know I wasn't always--I wasn't always the son you wanted either. I know that.
John: Ah, you've been a wonderful son... a son any father would be proud to have. And I am proud of you, kid.
Brady: You--you are?
John: That is a fact. That's something you need to know. That is something that you always need to believe.
Brady: Well, we both made our mistakes, so... maybe it's time you and I start over, huh?
Rafe: Yes. So you're going to wear the hat and jersey when we go to the cubs opening game next season!
Sami: This is by far the best tea that I have ever had, Allie.
Allie: It's magical princess tea.
Sami: Oh, is that what I taste?
Carrie: Hi, everybody.
Austin: Hey. Um, I hope you don't mind us coming. We realized that the place we most wanted to be today, was with family.
Rafe: Well, great. Yes, absolutely. 'Cause family's the most important thing, so-- we're glad you came.
EJ: I'm not going to be the person to deny...we have a pretty poor track record. All right, we've made just about every mistake you can possibly make.
Nicole: No, I think we missed a few. That's part of the problem. Look EJ, I'm not...trying to hurt you. But if there ever is a next time for me, I am looking for something that I have never had.
EJ: What is that?
Nicole: The whole package-- love, trust, support. And, yes, if there's great sex thrown in there, then that's a bonus. But I wasn't kidding at the town square opening when I said, "I want to experience the kind of love that tom and Alice Horton shared." I finished talking--you can laugh now.
EJ: I'm not laughing. You know, we're really not so different, you and I. We both want the same thing. You know how much Johnny and Sydney mean to me. That's why I'm doing this... thing, running for election. 'Cause I want them to have a father that they can be proud of. And I want them to be proud of who they are. Nicole, I know you love them too.
Nicole: I do.
EJ: Then why can't we just try and pull this together, okay? And just--just be a family?
Nicole: Yeah, I wondered why this...marriage didn't work before. It's because it was built on lies, blackmail.
EJ: Can--can we just stop rehashing history, Nicole? Would you just please, just give me one more chance, hmm?
Nicole: This moth has been burned enough to know when to step away from the flame.
EJ: I'm sorry.
Nicole: I'm sorry too.
EJ: There. I hope you're happy. It feels totally different from regular toothpaste.
Carrie: Thank you.
Carrie: Whoop, whoop.
Carrie: Hi. I'm, uh, meeting with our witness tonight to go over his testimony one more time.
Rafe: Yeah, I met with him earlier. Seems fine. Ready?
Carrie: I just hope he can hold up on the stand. This witness is all John has.
Rafe: For now. I'm not going to stop looking. I still think there's something else out there that's going to help our defense.
Madison: I, uh, know that you wanted me to come with you, so we could leave Brady and John alone for a little while.
Marlena: Oh. Hope you don't mind that.
Madison: Oh, not at all, no. Thank you so much for going over all the cosmetics with me. I really appreciate it.
Madison: You've earned yourself a ton of free stuff.
Marlena: Hey, I'll take it. Actually, it's the least I could do, after you helped persuade Brady to come see his dad. That meant so much to John.
Madison: Oh, it was mostly his decision. I really just gave him, you know, that little extra push.
Marlena: Hmm. I think you two must be pretty close, if he's discussing his... well, feelings about his dad with you.
Madison: Not really. You know, I mean, we've been spending a lot of time together lately, because of titan's business relationship with my company, and also my--my offices aren't ready yet. You know, they're going to be here in the square. But, for now, I've been using titan's, um, conference room.
Marlena: Guess I must have been wrong. I thought I saw something a little special between the two of you.
Madison: I don't kn--yeah. I mean, don't get me wrong, he's a great guy. I-- Brady is a great guy. He is very attractive. And he is incredibly intelligent, and he has a killer business sense.
Marlena: Yeah, he gets all that from his dad.
Madison: But I think the best thing about him is his sense of humor, you know? He doesn't take himself too seriously, and I love that he can laugh at himself. I'm going to go, um, just check on our order. It's been a while, huh?
Madison: Be right back.
John: So tell me a little bit about you and Madison.
John: I have to assume that you're more than just business colleagues if she got you to come here.
Brady: You're not the first person to say that, actually.
John: I'm not, huh?
Brady: No, I've already endured the wrath of Sami. She accused me of--how did she put it?--Being "all hot and bothered for Madison," and she warned me about getting involved with her boss.
John: Hmm. [Explosive scoff] Sounds like our Sami, but do me a favor-- don't listen to her. No. If you find Madison intriguing, and she makes you happy, just go with it.
Brady: Well, she wants it to be strictly business right now. That's her choice.
John: Hmm. I don't know. I'm not so sure about that. You see, I remember seeing in a--in a tabloid somewhere, a picture of the two of you, and you looked awfully cozy.
Brady: [Stammering] Wait. Back up. You're reading tabloids now?
John: Oh, man, you wouldn't believe the depths one sinks when they're under house arrest, but I haven't lost my last vestige of dignity. I have not yet succumbed to the allure of reality television.
Brady: Thank god, thank god. I need to watch reality TV, because I need to understand these mixed signals that this Madison woman is giving me. I'm--one minute we're really close.
Brady: We're getting there, and she puts up a wall. I don't get it.
John: Ah, well, you know... no big deal, take up pole vaulting. Or better yet, why don't you examine what Madison getting you here today really means?
John: Well, obviously, she cares enough about you to be involved in your life. So maybe the signals that she's sending you really aren't that mixed. You just...maybe you're having a tough time reading them. I'm a stay-at-home dad. And let me tell ya,
Marlena: I'm glad you liked the food from the cafe. We eat from there quite a bit. And we were about to--uh, to watch a movie. Would you join us?
Madison: What are you guys watching?
John: My favorite.
John: Good memory, kid.
Brady: I remember that, of course. I actually have a--I have a meeting tomorrow. I have to prepare some reports for it. Stay otherwise.
Madison: Oh, I have a conference call first thing in the morning.
Marlena: Oh, all righty. Well, maybe you could join us, uh, at the pub tomorrow for a family day.
John: Before the trial. Somebody had to say it.
Brady: Why don't I see if I can reschedule my meeting.
John: No. Don't do that. You've done enough just by being here tonight, kid.
Brady: You know what? I'm glad that I came here, dad.
Rafe: I'll get one right now.
Sami: Hang on.
Rafe: Okay, ready? One, two, three. Cute, all right.
Sami: Can you smile?
Rafe: Hey, can I get everyone, huh? All you guys. Let's go.
Carrie: Picture time.
Sami: Oh, Allie, come here, let's do it.
Sami: Come here, sweetie.
Austin: Yeah, are we in? Here we go.
Rafe: One more, one more.
Brady: Don't worry about tomorrow. Everything's going to be all right.
John: I'm going to hang on that.
Brady: Do that.
John: Thanks for coming, kid.
Brady: No problem.
Madison: I'm wishing you all good thoughts for tomorrow.
John: Appreciate that. It was so nice to meet you.
Brady: Thank you, for being here for him.
Marlena: I would not be anywhere else.
[Door clacks open] Good night, Madison.
John: Good night, kid.
Marlena: Hey. Movie time.
With the John Black trial set to begin here in Salem...
John: No, no.
We took a poll of local residents about this explosive case. An overwhelming majority of those polled here today believe that John Black is guilty. In fact, this large majority favors not only a conviction, but the maximum sentence--life in prison.
John: You're not going anywhere. There's too much hate out there. I'm going alone, and that's it. It's meant everything to me to have you here with the kids this morning.
