Nicholas: I'm gonna hang up now, Mom. And don't call back. You're as dead to me as my father is.

Carly: Come on, Melanie, just pick up. I just want to hear your voice, baby, come on. Hey, honey, it's me. It's mom. Um, nothing important. I just--I wanted to just say hi. I'll talk to you tomorrow. Tomorrow.

[Pills clatter]

Carly: [Sighs]

Lexie: Admitted three days ago, right. Well, no, not if her B.P. is still spiking. I'd advise against it. Okay, yeah, sure, if I have to. Let me know. Okay, bye. Ooh, it looks like you're ready for a fight.

Carly: What?

Lexie: Your fist. Looks like you're ready for action, and it's a good thing. I was just about to page you.

Carly: Yeah, what's up?

Lexie: Dr. Yu went home sick. I need you to cover for him.

Carly: Uh, he's, uh...

Lexie: O.R. Yeah, you'll be working O.R. tonight, okay?

Vivian: Oh, you should have seen Carly. The level of pain in her eyes was palpable.

Gus: And you did that?

Vivian: I did that. I made sure that Dr. Manning heard me chatting away with her son amiably, intimately-- her son that hates her. [Chuckles] I tell you, there were levels of despair that were sort of--oh, I don't know--like a one-two punch. He likes me, hates you... likes me, hates you.

Gus: And still champion!

[Both chuckle]

Vivian: And you know what champions do, you know? They go on--they move on to the next fight. So let's see, where's the list? We have to make sure that the DiMera mansion is absolutely empty tonight.

Gus: Right here.

Vivian: Okay, Nicole and Taylor?

Gus: At the hospital, visiting their mother.

Vivian: I wonder what it's like to bring up a porn star and a bookkeeper at the same time. Oh, Vivian, stop it! Fo--focus! Kate--where's Kate?

Gus: She has an appointment for a facial.

Vivian: Isn't that rather like sweeping the beach? Well, anyway... and the gentlemen?

Gus: Ah, DiMera and son-- they have a business meeting... to define corporate goals.

Vivian: Translation-- who do we whack next? And then there are the children and the servant.

Gus: Children with their mother, servants have the night off.

Vivian: Oh, this is so perfect. We're going to have the whole house to ourselves. We'll know exactly what Stefano's up to.

Nicole: Oh, damn it!

Taylor: Nicole, calm down. What's wrong?

Fay: [Weakly] EJ...

Nicole: Okay, what about EJ?

Fay: Secret...

Nicole: Secret? Mom, what do--what do you mean? I don't--I don't know what you're trying to tell me. I just don't get it. If you're the kind of practical person who could keep books, you should know how to jump a car.

Taylor: Right. Accounting, Auto Mechanics-- all the same thing.

Nicole: Well, I could call a driver, but EJ gave everyone the night off. Now we're gonna have to take a cab.

Taylor: Mom's probably sleeping. I don't think you have to worry about seeing her.

Nicole: She was really upset.

Taylor: So Lexie gave her a sedative. Nicole, you know she's being well taken care of.

Rafe 2: I'm sorry you have to die, Fay. But the truth is... you're in the way.

[Rock music blaring]

EJ: You know, it's not that I mind rock music...

[Volume decreases slightly]

EJ: I just hate bad rock music.

Stefano: Listen, if he was playing anything that we would like, he would not be making the statement that he's trying to make. You see, Chad wants to make sure that I understand that his living here does not mean that he is going to be under my thumb.

EJ: Why can't he just go and get some, uh--some tattoos or some piercings, like everybody else? Something nice and quiet.

Stefano: You know, you sound like an old fogy. I could just imagine the pain that Giovanni and Sydney are gonna put you under.

EJ: Uh-uh, uh-uh, don't start.

Stefano: All right. All set? Um... I wonder if I should call the hospital and check on Fay.

EJ: Why would you do that? You got a nurse on the payroll. Nicole and Taylor are on their way over there. Besides, you and I have more important things to talk about than Fay... like what we're gonna do about that ticking bomb you put in Samantha's lap.

Fay: Please... no.

Rafe 2: Well, hello, again.

Fay: No.

Rafe 2: You know, it looks like there is something to be said for minding your own business.

[Monitor beeping]

Rafe 2: These beeps and whistles are distracting. [Beeping stops] There we go. It's a little more peaceful, isn't it? Damn it! Nurses call button-- why didn't I think of that? Oh, looks like I did. Shh.

Carly: Lexie, I d--I don't think that's a good idea.

Lexie: So there is something wrong?

Carly: No, no, nothing wrong. I just--I-- the thing about it is the O.R. takes mental prep, you know. And I don't want to be all new-agey on you, but I like to Zen out and really, really focus. So this last-minute thing is kind of... but, you know, if it were an emergency, then the adrenaline would kick in. But the idea of just going through the whole night without knowing what's coming next can be--

Lexie: Okay, Carly, Carly, just slow down. I mean, it's no problem. I-I'll find someone else. It's no problem.

Carly: I have to do something... soon.

Fay: Aah!

Rafe 2: Shh. You keep it down.

Fay: [Gasps]

Rafe 2: Now... I'm gonna be honest with you... it's really kind of a shame that things ended up the way they did. I like Nicole. I never wanted to see anything bad happen to Misty. But, you know, you take another dude's place, it's one near miss after another, and you know I can't have you around with you knowing what you know.

Fay: I won't tell.

Rafe 2: Oh, you won't?

Fay: No, I won't.

Rafe 2: Sure you won't. Check's in the mail too, right?

Fay: I won't. Please...

Rafe 2: Hey, hey... I'll give you this, though. You're tough. You are. I thought that tumble down the stairs was gonna be the end of you.

Fay: Please.

Rafe 2: But you know what they say. If at first you don't succeed...

Lexie: Elise, I'm gonna need some help adjusting the surgical schedule.

Elise: Um, sorry, shift change. I can't leave the desk right now.

Lexie: Oh, okay, no problem. We'll do it later.

Elise: Yeah. I'm free in an hour. Shall I come to your office?

Lexie: Yeah, sounds good. Thanks.

Elise: Okay.

Lexie: Guess I'll go check on Fay Walker, see how she's doing. [Pager beeping] Oh. Oh, it'll have to wait. I'm needed in the E.R.

Rafe 2: Look at it this way. The cops are never gonna disappoint you again.

EJ: Hey, I thought you two went to the hospital.

Nicole: Car trouble.

EJ: Ah.

Nicole: You didn't have anything to do with that, did you?

EJ: What?

Nicole: [Chuckles] Bad joke.

EJ: How is that even a joke?

Nicole: It wasn't. It was...

EJ: Lame?

Nicole: Lame. Yeah.

EJ: Uh-huh. I'm not sure I appreciate that. I think I've been very supportive of your mother, considering her condition.

Nicole: I know. And I know that you want Taylor and me to be with mom, in hopes that she starts talking, and we can figure this whole mess out.

Taylor: Nicole's had a pretty bad day. She didn't need her car to break down on top of everything else. Um, I really think it's all right. Mom probably wouldn't even know we were there.

EJ: How would you know that exactly? I think one of you should be there.

Taylor: No, it's fine, really.

EJ: Wouldn't you both feel better if one of you was there?

Taylor: I really don't want you to--

EJ: Not a big deal. Let me jump in my car--

Nicole: Okay, all right, can we all stop talking about it and just go, all right? I want someone mom knows to be there when she wakes up.

Chloe: I'm still not sure this is such a good idea.

Philip: Well, it's my idea, so it's got to be great.

Chloe: I just don't like leaving Parker alone.

Philip: Alone? There are, like, six people in that house vying to be his primary care-giver. Besides, he's asleep.

Chloe: I guess.

Philip: And another thing-- and I know this better than anyone-- living in the Kiriakis house is like being in battle. You got to get some R&R, or you can't keep going.

Chloe: Philip, thank you. It means so much to me that you've been so nice, and that you trust me.

Philip: We talked about this. Stop being so grateful. [Sighs] You know, we both know that this is my fault too.

Vivian: Has anyone seen a scarf? Philip, what are you--what are you doing with her?

Philip: Let's get out of here.

Chloe: No, no, it's okay. You can say whatever vile thing comes into your head, 'cause I'm not running away from you.

Vivian: You know, Victor wasn't always wrong about everything. Dealing with her is like dealing with disaster.

Philip: Do you remember when I had that fireplace poker in my hand? You remember when I found out you were in that coffin? Do you really want to get up in my face when we're standing next to a body of water with a swift current?

Chloe: Philip, do you want me to gather some rocks for her pockets?

Vivian: The woman is a walking disaster, and she's repeating herself. She started with you. Remember how that ended up? Then she got Brady on drugs, and then she cuckolded Lucas, and then, of course, where was Daniel. What happened there? Oh, yes, she cuckolded him, and now she's come back to you. Can you spell "stupid"? Oh, stop it!

Philip: Remember when Melanie and I were getting married, and you tried to kill her?

Chloe: Do you remember why I thought Daniel was having an affair?

Philip: We do.

Vivian: Philip... Philip, don't. Don't.

Philip: Ah, Vivian, I think you've lost your sense of humor. Let's get out of here, Chloe. I should have realized when you come by the waterfront, you're gonna run into the scum of the earth.

Vivian: I gave you life. You're throwing it away on that opera-molly trollop! [Coughs] Some people just don't know when to move on.

Gus: Madam? Everyone's left.

Vivian: Gus, we're going in.

Nicole: [Clears throat]

Carly: I thought you'd gone home.

Nicole: Is my mother awake?

Carly: I doubt it. I checked on her about a half an hour ago. She was sleeping, peacefully.

Nicole: She was really upset the last time I saw her.

Carly: Uh, well, I think the sedative Lexie gave her calmed her down a little bit.

Nicole: Okay. Well, I'd still like to check on her.

Carly: Right. Let me clear it with Lexie. Excuse me. Hey, there you are.

Lexie: I was in the E.R. What'd I miss?

Carly: Taylor and Nicole are here to see their mother. Would it be okay if-- [Alarm beeping] Fay!

Nicole: What is it? What's wrong?

Rafe 2: A little late, girls.

[Elevator bell dings]

Chloe: Oh, yeah, and don't worry about calling, because I can be back in five minutes. Okay, bye. You're gonna laugh at me now, right?

Philip: A little.

Chloe: I know. You're right. Parker's perfectly safe and happy without me.

Philip: But now we need to work on the converse. We need to find out what makes you happy... aside from him.

Chloe: I don't need anything else.

Philip: Well, that's good news for Parker. Boys love to have mothers who are exclusively, slavishly devoted to them. Works out really well. Just ask me.

Chloe: He's just an infant.

Philip: Yeah, but you're still--you're a human being. You need to be doing something for yourself.

Chloe: Okay, like what? Should I take up macramé?

Philip: You should sing.

Chloe: What is it that they say about the Salem Opera House? Oh, yeah, it doesn't exist.

Philip: There are other kinds of music besides opera.

Chloe: Right, lullabies. I'm all over them. Jimmy, what are you doing here?

Jimmy: Hey, it's open-mic night. You gonna sing?

Chloe: I hate you. I really, really hate you.

Vivian: Well, Kate's made it very homey. Why don't you take the upstairs? I'll do the downstairs. And don't try anything on. We're here to spy. What-- what the hell are you doing here?

Chad: I live here. Who the hell are you?

Nicole: Let me in there, damn it--that's my mother!

Elise: Please, just let the doctors do their jobs, okay?

EJ: What's going on?

Taylor: Mom--something's really wrong.

Lexie: She's in asystole.

Nicole: What are they doing? What's happening?

Elise: I'll find out, okay? I'll find out.

EJ: She's right. Let's just let Lexie do-- okay?

Nicole: Taylor... Taylor, what is going on?

Lexie: Wait, what are you doing?

Carly: The only thing we can do.

Lexie: Carly--

Nicole: I don't understand. They said she was gonna be fine.

Taylor: She will be, Nikki. She has to be.

EJ: Sweetheart.

Carly: I am so sorry.

Nicole: No. No! No! [Sobbing] No.

EJ: Shh, shh, shh.

Vivian: You don't live here. You're not on my list.

Chad: So do you want me to call the cops or Marco? 'Cause I'm sure the cops will go a little bit easier on you.

Vivian: I know... you're Chad.

Chad: And you're breaking and entering.

Vivian: No, no, no, I'm Vivian Alamain. We're practically related. You're one of Stefano's past indiscretions, and I'm one of his past wives.

Chad: Oh, you're the crazy one who buries people alive.

Vivian: No, I'm the friendly one. I'm still a friend of your father's, but I see you have not inherited his innate civility. I'm just here for a visit.

Chad: Okay, well, I'm gonna be way civil. I'm gonna let you go. And then next time you stop by, ring the bell.

Vivian: [Chuckles] Au revoir, young man. And I hope living here gives you some manners.

Vivian: Stefano! Handsome--so handsome. It makes me sorry we didn't have a son together.

Stefano: Oh, my God. God forbid. Did you let her in?

Chad: Nope. She thought no one was home.

Stefano: You have made a very serious mistake.

Rafe 2: Hey, gang. What'd I miss?

Roman: What do you mean what'd you miss? You two weren't together? You went out without your partner? And you let her? What the hell did you have to do that was so damn important?

Rafe 2: [Clears throat]

Taylor: [Crying]

Nicole: This isn't happening. You said she was gonna be fine. Lexie said we could go home, and we weren't even here... when she died!

EJ: Sweetheart.

Nicole: Where is she? Where is the all-knowing Dr. Carver, huh? She's hiding, isn't she? She screwed up, and she is hiding.

Carly: No, there's something she had to do.

Taylor: Nicole, don't do this, okay? Just say good-bye.

Nicole: We wouldn't have to say good-bye if she hadn't died! Oh, my God. What happened? What happened? Was she given the wrong sedative--too much?

EJ: Nicole, don't--

Nicole: Stop! Stop, EJ. Stop. I know she's your sister. But your sister killed my mother... and I want an autopsy. I want to know why and how she died.

Taylor: Nikki, honey, look at me. Look at her. She looks so peaceful. Look at her.

Nicole: She's not peaceful. She's dead! Oh, my God! And they don't even know why!

Carly: Nicole. Nicole. I think I do know why.

Nicole: [Sobbing]

Philip: Look, I know open-mic night isn't up to your usual standards, but I also know how much singing means to you and how great a singer you are.

Chloe: Philip, I haven't sung in months.

Philip: What about those lullabies?

Chloe: Yeah, right. You know what I mean. I'm not--I'm not prepared. My voice is shot. I'm not warmed up. I can't do it.

Philip: Well, Chloe, that's a damn lie.

Stefano: Chad, why don't you go upstairs? Miss Alamain and I have to have a little talk.

Chad: I wonder if you'll think he is "innately civilized" five minutes from now.

[Door closes]

Vivian: You know, this is such a silly misunderstanding. I just stopped by to chat. The door was ajar, and I--

Stefano: The door is never ajar.

Vivian: No, when it's a door, but this one was ajar.

Stefano: Cute.

Vivian: And, actually, it was quite wide open, which is very dangerous. I think you should chastise your servants immediately. Now, if you had a watchdog, like a Rottweiler or a Doberman, or maybe even a Chihuahua would make a big fuss if he heard an intruder. And after all, all that barking would be a dis-- I mean, it would distract everybody, and, you know-- obviously you don't care!

Stefano: Enough with your crap!

Vivian: How rude.

Stefano: You broke into my house. That is stupid. And it is arrogant. Hmm? Now, you see what we have to do? We have to decide... on how you will pay for this mistake.

Roman: Now, I wonder if you grasp why we put a younger detective with an older detective. You see, it's so the younger detective will get more mature and smarter, not that the older detective gets less mature and dumber.

Rafe 2: I always wondered where Sami got her love of chewing guys out.

Roman: Excuse me?

Rafe 2: Come on, bud. No need to get your panties all in a wad, all right? Nobody died.

Roman: All right, dial it down, wise guy! You're about three seconds away from getting written up.

Woman: Uh, Commander Brady? Uh, sorry. Um, it's an urgent call from the hospital. A, uh, Dr. Carver wants to talk to you.

Roman: Okay.

Carly: When I--when I closed your mother's eyes, I noticed, uh, petechiae. And you know your mother suffered from heart-rhythm abnormalities. That can cause a patient to throw a clot and suffer an instant massive stroke. It's sudden, and there's nothing anybody can do about it. And what's more, it probably had nothing to do with her fall.

Nicole: That's your story, and you're sticking to it? I still want an autopsy.

Taylor: Nicole, that's horrible to think about. Nikki, it doesn't matter why, okay? She's gone.

Nicole: "It doesn't matter"? There are so many questions-- why she stopped taking those pills, why she was on those stairs, what she needed to tell me. I need to know.

EJ: Sweetheart... don't blame Lexie. Don't put your sister and yourself through this. Nicole.

Jimmy: [Plays ending of song]

Philip: Okay, now I'm gonna threaten you. If you don't get up there and sing, I'm going to-- Macarthur Park, uncut.

Chloe: Oof, that would be horrible.

Philip: More than you even know.

Chloe: Oh, come on, Philip, I don't know what to sing. This crowd doesn't exactly strike me as a twinkle, twinkle, little star crowd.

Philip: When you sing to Parker, you improvise. Do that.

Chloe: Yeah, that's because I can look into his pretty little eyes.

Philip: Then look into my eyes. I love to hear you sing just as much as he does. I swear. Okay, Macarthur Park it is.

Chloe: Okay, okay, fine. You win. I'll do it.

Philip: I love winning. Okay, folks... got a real treat for you tonight. We've got someone who can really, really sing. Put your hands together for Miss Chloe Lane!

[Motherless child]

Chloe: Sometimes I feel like a motherless child sometimes I feel like a motherless child sometimes I feel like a motherless child a long way from home

Vivian: Stefano... [Coughs] I really think you're over-reacting. And, frankly, I do not appreciate being threatened.

Stefano: If you don't want to be threatened, then you do not break into my house. See, I don't want you to even drive by my house. I don't want you to even think about my house. Do you understand what I'm saying?

Vivian: My God, I thought we were friends.

Stefano: Well, you thought wrong.

[Cell phone ringing]

Stefano: Ugh! What?

Vivian: You have just confirmed that you are hiding something.

Stefano: All right, I'll be right there.

Vivian: And you know something about me. I am nothing if not intrepid.

Stefano: Get the hell out of here, now. I don't want you in this house ever again. And you stay away from me, my business, and my family. Go!

Lexie: I'm so sorry. Oh, Carly, um... I want to talk to you about what happened in there.

Carly: I thought-- I thought I should try. I didn't have time to ask you. I'm sorry.

Lexie: No, no, the injection was the right thing to do. What I want to know is... did I miss something? I mean, did I--did I read the case wrong?

Carly: No. I don't think you did. I told Nicole and Taylor that when I closed Fay's eyes, I saw petechiae. She has heart-rhythm abnormalities.

Lexie: Oh, so she blew a clot. She had a-a stroke.

Carly: I don't think you did anything wrong.

Lexie: [Sighs] Yeah, well, I hope you're right. Okay, you, uh... go home. Get some sleep, okay?

Carly: Sleep... as if.

Nicole: I'm sorry, Mom. I'm so sorry for everything.

Taylor: EJ... help her.

EJ: Hey. Come on, sweetheart. Come on.

Nicole: I put her through hell, EJ... over and over and over again.

EJ: Shh. Listen to me, Nicole. You did not put your mother through hell. You did what you had to do to survive. Just don't do this to yourself. You heard Carly. There was nothing that could have been done. This was going to happen eventually. But Fay died knowing that you loved her and that you were happy that she was your mother. You did that. I watched you do that. So don't ever say you were a bad daughter, 'cause she was very lucky to have you.

Nicole: Taylor?

Taylor: Yeah?

Nicole: Brandon.

Taylor: I know. I'll call him.

Nicole: We'll do it together.

Taylor: No. No, it's okay. Nikki, just stay. Stay with EJ.

Nicole: Okay. Actually, EJ, can I... have a moment alone?

EJ: Of course you can.

Nicole: Thank you. Really, thank you. EJ... be nice to Taylor, okay? I have you. She's going through this alone.

Taylor: Oh, God. Machine--great. Hey, Brandon... it's me, Taylor. I need to talk to you, okay? So, um, call me back as soon as you get this. I love you.

EJ: Hey.

Taylor: Don't-- don't touch me.

Vivian: Oh, thank heavens you're all right. Oh, the mood Stefano was in, I was afraid of what he might do to you when he found out you were in Kate's closet. Find anything you liked?

Gus: You think you're so funny, don't you?

Vivian: You know, you told me the house was empty. Turns out one of Stefano's progeny had moved in, and you missed it entirely.

Gus: Well, it's a big house.

Vivian: That is a wretched excuse, and I have now incurred Stefano's wrath... and I don't know anything. We have learned nothing.

Gus: That's not true. The DiMeras have a jail cell in their basement.

Vivian: Well, who doesn't?

Gus: Okay. But this one's been used... very recently.

Vivian: Really?

Gus: Really.

Vivian: Hmm. Stefano, Stefano, Stefano, what are you up to?

Roman: Well, I appreciate it.

Woman: Bad news, sir?

Roman: Somebody I knew died.

Rafe 2: Who was it?

Roman: Actually, you knew her too. You interviewed her when Sydney was missing--Fay Walker.

Rafe 2: Nicole's mother?

Roman: Mm-hmm.

Rafe 2: Well, they contacted you. Does that mean they suspect something?

Roman: No. Lexie was aware that I knew her and, uh, thought I'd like to know. Died of natural causes, apparently.

Rafe 2: Well... may she rest in peace.

Chloe: A long way a long way a long way from home

Taylor: EJ, I didn't want to come here tonight. I was glad when the car wouldn't start... because I was afraid. I was afraid that my mother was gonna tell my sister about us. And so I wasn't here when she died. My mother was dying, and all I could think about was myself!

EJ: No, Taylor... don't.

Taylor: She's gone, EJ. She--she's just gone. Oh, my God.

Nicole: I hope EJ's right. I hope you know I'm glad you were my mom. You were gonna tell me something... about EJ... a secret. I'll find out, Mom. I swear I will.

On the next “Days of our Lives..."

Stefano: What's going on?

EJ: Something's not right.

Nicole: Mom knew a DiMera secret, and look what happened to her.

Melanie: [Gasps]
