Daniel: Damn it. Damn it!
Daniel: Mrs. Shovic's being released tomorrow, and I don't trust her son. I was supposed to call the elderly care agency, but then, you know, I think--I'm sure it's--I don't even have a watch. Why am I looking at my hand?
Lexie: Daniel, Daniel, it's okay. Maxine caught it. I called it in this afternoon. It's all set.
Daniel: Go ahead. Say it.
Lexie: Say what?
Daniel: That Maxine shouldn't have had to have caught it, and you weren't supposed to be making my calls for me. I'm just a little, um... I don't know, what's the euphemism? Distracted. There you go.
Lexie: You didn't seem distracted when you saved my nephew's eyesight. So I don't mind making a call for you or covering for you or doing anything I can for you.
Daniel: Thank you. I-I... I need to work, that's what I need; I need to work.
Lexie: Yeah, I know. Been that way myself. [Sighs] Daniel, um...okay, look. You can tell me to butt out, but I just have to ask you. How are things between you and Chloe?
Daniel: That's an easy answer. There's nothing between me and Chloe.
Daniel: You left this at the apartment. I was gonna leave it with your doorman.
Chloe: You don't want to give it to him yourself?
Daniel: No, I don't.
Chloe: It's worth a shot.
Kayla: What can I get you?
Chad: How 'bout a job?
EJ: [Sighs] Well... that was classic Samantha Brady. Soaring rhetoric... empty threats, defined gestures, and out the door.
Nicole: You are surprised?
EJ: Uh, yes. I was, actually. I offered her joint custody of her children when I could have...thrown her in jail. I made the mistake of thinking she could be reasonable, again. Next time, I'll know how to handle her.
Rafe: Come on, DiMera, what'd you expect? You ambushed her.
Justin: I got it, Henderson.
Sami: Hey, hey. Victor's not here, right? I need your help. I'm so glad you're here.
Justin: Sami, whoa, whoa, whoa--what's wrong?
Sami: I need you to help me to find a way to legally shove this down EJ DiMera's throat.
Rafe: You're really telling me with a straight face that you did not set out to ambush Sami?
EJ: It was a clerical error, Rafe. A codicil was missing from the original document, that's all.
Rafe: Clerical error. [Chuckles] Ah, boy. You're just a new man, aren't ya? Changed man, prayin' man. You even offer Sami the joint custody agreement. You only left out one key detail, which is the fact that the porn star who had kidnapped her child was part of the agreement.
Nicole: Hey, watch it.
Rafe: What, am I supposed to be nice to you? You are part and parcel of everything that he does.
EJ: You know, I really think if you acted in your wife's best interests that you would be trying to ratchet down the tension.
Rafe: Oh, is that right? Yeah? Why? So you can sucker punch her again? I was going to put it another way. Calm her down. So I'm not tempted to renege on the entire deal. Ahem, and that includes the part...where she doesn't go to prison.
Sami: You know, this is just another one of EJ's sick, twisted manipulations. I mean, after what happened with Johnny, I thought--I actually thought he was gonna change. But he never changes. Never, ever changes. Just when I think he's actually starting to act human, [Laughs], He does something like this. Something that he knows is gonna drive a knife through my heart.
Justin: Well, one thing I've always said about EJ...
Sami: That he's a sick, twisted bastard?
Justin: Well, that. He's also one hell of an attorney.
Sami: No. No, come on! There has to be some sort of loophole in there.
Justin: Sami, this contract is tighter than a drum. But we could try taking it to a judge.
Justin: No, maybe we should. I mean, we could certainly argue that, uh, Nicole Walker is certainly not fit to be a candidate as a--as a mother, as a substitute mother.
Sami: No, okay? No courts.
Justin: It'd be a family court. So the rules of admissibility would be a little more relaxed. We could introduce all of Nicole's past history. Her long list of prior acts.
Sami: You have to hear me, okay? I'm telling you, we have to find a way to convince EJ to change his mind about this without going to court.
Justin: So what is it you're not telling me?
Sami: Nothing, I'M...just saying we can't go to court.
Justin: Well, then, think about this offer. It's not a bad deal. Well, it's not. Shared custody. Equal rights and responsibilities. I've seen...a lot worse offers, believe me.
Sami: That deal means Nicole gets to be a part of my children's lives. I will see her dead before I let that happen.
Johnny: Where's my frog?
Lexie: Hey. Hi, sweetheart. Did I wake you up? I'm sorry. I was just making sure you were okay. Guess what. You're doing great. [Sighs] Bet you're kind of tired of hanging around here, huh?
Johnny: Where's my frog?
Lexie: Oh! I, um... I put him over here. So I could check your pulse. Did Grandpa Stefano bring you this?
Johnny: No, somebody named Chad.
Kayla: You know, actually, I am looking for a bartender.
Chad: Oh, that's great. I can start working as soon as you want.
Kayla: Great. How 'bout when you're 21? And I'm guessing that's not for a while now, is it?
Chad: But I can get a fake.
Kayla: You get a fake, and I lose my liquor license. And let me tell you, I need that license. People don't come in here just to chat, you know. Sorry, kid.
Chad: Well, look, there's gotta be something else. Stock boy, something. Anything.
Kayla: No, I'm sorry. Not at the moment. I'll tell you what. You know what? You write down your name and your number, and if something comes up, I'll give you a call. How 'bout that? Okay?
Chad: Great. Thanks a lot.
Kayla: You're welcome a lot. Oh, great. Okay. Just Chad? What is it, like "Cher"?
Chad: I'm sorry, what?
Kayla: [Sighs] You're young. Okay, um, you know, this is a very relaxed establishment, but we do use last names, so... what's yours?
Chad: Yeah, I'm not sure.
Maggie: Chloe, I was thinking about making us A...salad.
Chloe: Maxine, you have to help me; the baby's sick.
Maxine: Oh, I'll page a doctor for you.
Chloe: It has to be Daniel. Only Daniel.
Rafe: Yeah, well... that's always the bottom line with you, isn't it? A threat.
Nicole: Well, if Sami doesn't like to be threatened, maybe she shouldn't have confessed to shooting EJ on tape.
Rafe: Oh, my God, you two sure are compatible, aren't you? It's all about deals and threats. It has nothing to do with the children's best interests, does it?
EJ: That's enough, Rafe! Nicole is a wonderful mother, and there is nothing in that agreement that is not in the children's best interest.
Rafe: Sami being tormented is not in their best interest!
EJ: It's just her nature to be volatile.
Rafe: Nature? Over and over and over you push her beyond what anyone could deal with, and you're gonna sit there and tell me it's her nature to be volatile? The laundry list of things that you have done. Well, I don't blame her for putting a bullet in your head. Oh, I don't. And you have the nerve, the audacity to invite her down here and kick her in the chin one more time?
Nicole: Stop it, Rafe. Stop. You pop off like this, you'll make it worse for Sami.
Rafe: Oh, yeah, you're always so worried about Sami's well being.
Nicole: You want a list? I'll give you a list of people who could tell you what Sami is really like. That she's not beyond cutting a corner or two, or lying or scheming or manipulating.
Nicole: Look, you had better take this realistically, because this agreement... this is a gift. And EJ doesn't have to give her an inch. He doesn't even have to give her shared custody! How 'bout that?
EJ: That's enough.
EJ: Rafe's right. [Nicole gasps] I've done this all along.
Justin: You want my help?
Sami: Of course I do.
Justin: Well, listen to me. Knock that off.
Justin: And I don't mean don't say things like, "I want to see her dead first." I mean, don't even think things like that.
Sami: Do you know what that woman has done to me?
Justin: Yes, and do you know what's at stake? And do you know what happens to people who are angry and self-righteous in the midst of a custody battle? They usually end up worse off then when it started.
Sami: But come on, Justin--
Justin: No! No buts about it. EJ is cool, he's rational, and in complete control. Now, you have to get yourself under control... or you are mincemeat.
Lexie: Chad, hi.
Chad: Oh! Hey.
Lexie: I couldn't tell if you were that wrapped up into what you were doing, or if you were trying to make sure I didn't see you.
Lexie: Well, I-I won't intrude. Um, I just didn't want to just walk past you as if you weren't there.
Chad: Well, actually, I, um...I would kind of like to ask you how Johnny's doing. So why don't you--why don't you have a seat?
Lexie: Okay, thanks. [Sighs] Well, um... medically, Johnny's doing as well as can be expected.
Chad: And what does that mean, "medically"?
Lexie: [Sighs] He's going to be fine, physically. But he's, uh, he's just facing a huge adjustment once he gets home out of the hospital. You know, hospitals are-- are kind of unreal. Like, uh, like being in limbo.
Chad: Okay, so what you're saying... what happened might hit him when he gets back home.
Lexie: Yeah. Yeah. And, uh, I mean, this may come as a huge surprise to you, but, uh, his family life is a bit complicated.
Chad: Ah, you don't say.
Lexie: Yeah. In saying that, um... you are more than welcome to join our family, if you want to. But I can understand you having some reservations about it.
Chad: Mm, yeah. Phew. I really don't know what to say.
Lexie: You don't have to say anything, I... I, um... I'll--I'll leave you alone, um... look, I--I just, um... I just want you to know that... you made quite an impression on Johnny. He's--he's really bonded with that frog that you gave him. I'm sure he'd love to see you again.
Chad: Well, he seems like a great kid.
Lexie: Seems to me so is his uncle.
Justin: If EJ is playing you, then that's exactly what he wants you to do. If he's on the level... then...you could blow an offer that is in your kids' best interest.
Sami: I can't think. Uhh! I know it's a cliché, but...it's just too much. It's just...too much.
Justin: I understand. Okay, listen. Go home. Talk to Rafe. Think about it. Don't talk to EJ. I'll call you in the morning. We'll sort this out.
Sami: I guess you're right.
Justin: I'm always right.
Sami: [Weak chuckle]
Justin: It's a burden.
EJ: It would seem that I made...the classic mistake. The lawyer who represents himself, ahem... has a fool for client.
Rafe: Well, I don't think you're a fool, and I don't think anything happened that you didn't want to happen.
EJ: Well, then, I will just have to convince you...and more importantly, Samantha, otherwise. Rafe, I want this to work. This is not a ploy.
Rafe: Not a ploy. I'm sure it wasn't. Look, I think that another lawyer would have better understood the importance of making sure that all of these terms and conditions were crystal clear from the outset. But my mistake was--was not a legal one, it was a negotiating one.
Rafe: What are you doing now?
EJ: I'm calling Samantha. I'm going to apologize, and I'm going to ask her to come back to the table.
Rafe: Well, I wouldn't do that. It's just gonna lead to more of the same.
EJ: Okay. What do you propose?
Rafe: I propose you let me talk to Sami to try and undo some of the damage that you've done.
EJ: Well, I certainly appreciate that. Thank you, but, uh, listen. I don't mean to tell you how to handle Samantha, but...
Rafe: But what?
EJ: [Chuckles] I-I think it would be helpful to make two things very clear to her. First of all, Nicole is a part of this agreement, no matter what. Secondly... she's not a threat to Samantha's relationship to her children.
Rafe: Right. She's just a nanny with benefits.
Nicole: I don't think he likes me very much.
EJ: It doesn't really matter. Despite his attitude... he recognizes what Samantha does not.
Nicole: And that is...
EJ: She doesn't really have a choice.
Rafe: Okay. Hey, I'm sorry.
Rafe: I think of all the times that I have told you to stay calm and not to let EJ get the best of you. I told you that this thing was a good agreement. I almost tore EJ apart tonight.
Sami: But just almost. Right?
Rafe: Yeah. You know, he-- he wanted to apologize to you for how he handled things. And I told him not to call you because it would only make things worse, so I'm supposed to be staying calm and talking to you and being rational, which is really fricking hard when I want to get in my car and beat the crap out of the guy!
Sami: Ohh! Hey, hey...
Rafe: Sorry, it's just--
Sami: Angry, dark side of your personality is really... sexy. And I just want you to know I love you for it. [Sighs] Don't worry, okay? I went and saw Justin, and he already had to talk some sense into me about this.
Sami: Well, he told me not to talk to EJ tonight, and he said if I sleep on it, maybe I'll feel differently tomorrow. But I'm not gonna feel differently about Nicole. Ever. And now EJ wants to tie her to me forever.
[Knock on door]
Maggie: Oh, it's her.
Victor: I was on my way to Java for a coffee, and I thought... what's wrong?
Maggie: Come in. I was upstairs for just a minute, and I came back down, and Chloe and the baby were gone. Seems she wants some fresh air.
Victor: And I missed her. You know how I love a good chin wag with Chloe.
Maggie: You are talking about your grandson's mother.
Victor: I know, I know. She left a note. Why are you worried about her?
Maggie: Well, because, she can barely move, she's so distraught. And then all of a sudden she wants some fresh air? Uh-uh. Something's wrong.
Maxine: Honey, look, I know you're a new mother, but usually when the baby is sick, he cries or seems unhappy.
Chloe: There is something wrong with him. I know there is. Daniel, thank God you're here. There's something wrong with the baby. He was fussy and I think he's running a fever.
Daniel: Well, honey, did you feel him? Is he hot or is he warm?
Maxine: He seems fine.
Daniel: Well, does he have a rash? I mean, is there respiratory problems?
Daniel: Maxine, I'll take it from here.
Maxine: Yeah. Keep your voices down.
Daniel: Just what the hell do you think you're doing?
Kayla: I'm sorry, we're closed for inventory.
Justin: Now, how can you do inventory when you couldn't even balance a checkbook?
Kayla: I couldn't balance a checkbook because you refused to write the checks in the register.
Justin: That's because I'm a big picture guy.
Justin: I don't get bogged down in the details. Yeah, back in the day... you and I used to have some killer fights about that, didn't we?
Kayla: We did indeed.
Justin: I think I was so fierce about the issue because...I knew I was dead wrong.
Kayla: Now you say it. [Both laugh] All right, my friend, what brings you to a bar at this time of night?
Justin: Well, I'm dealing with this...really nasty custody fight. It's really sad.
Kayla: I'm sorry.
Justin: And it just hit me... what a really classy dame you are.
Chad: So I bought a kid a toy frog, it's, uh... it's no big deal.
Lexie: Mm, it wasn't just a toy. You made a connection with him, Chad. You made him feel better.
Chad: Yeah...you know. He--
Lexie: Okay, you're an only child, right?
Chad: Well, apparently not.
Lexie: Yeah, apparently not. Uh, but you grew up as one. Must feel nice to have a little nephew.
Chad: Like I said, seems like a great kid.
Lexie: Yeah. Okay, look. What I want to say is, um... don't feel like you have to take on the whole DiMera family en masse, all right? You can--you can spend time with Johnny and not spend time with my father. Just think of it as, like, "okay, I'll take one from column 'a,' and none, none from column 'B.'" It's your choice, Chad. Pick and choose. You pick and choose.
Chad: I didn't expect you to say that.
Lexie: [Sighs] Yeah, well I... I've had my own experiences with being a DiMera. I love my father. And I--I love my brother. But still, I-- I have to keep a little distance for myself. You know, just--just to maintain who I am.
Justin: Because they're bad people...right?
Daniel: Do you have any idea what you've done? This is a hospital. I help people who are in need, and you come in here and you play charades?
Chloe: I thought he was sick.
Daniel: No, you thought you could make me feel sorry for you by using that baby to get to me.
Chloe: That baby? That baby's name is Parker Daniel Jonas.
Daniel: Yeah, Chloe, he has my name and Philip's genes.
Chloe: I'm sorry, I'm-- I'm sorry.
Daniel: You--you, uh, you need to go home. And you are in no shape to drive, so I'll--I'll, uh... I'll get you a ride. Who do you want me to call?
Chloe: Maggie. She's always sweet to me.
EJ: You were, uh... quiet on the ride home.
Nicole: I was just thinking. It's been quite a day.
EJ: Yeah, it has.
Nicole: So when you were talking to Rafe, and you told him you thought it was in your children's best interests if I were around... were you just...saying that for his benefit, or did you really mean it?
EJ: Are you fishing for compliments?
EJ: Hmm? Are you?
Nicole: No, I'm-- I'm just trying to figure out where I stand.
EJ: Okay. Um... I'll tell you where you stand. You stand exactly where you want to stand. I mean, you spent...two years trying to become a part of Sidney's life.
Nicole: And now Johnny's. Yeah. But don't you think, Rafe, even though he was really mean to me, was--was kind of right? It would be better for Sidney and Johnny if Sami wasn't so angry and so upset.
EJ: Look, I completely agree. But that's Rafe's problem. You're not having second thoughts, are you?
Nicole: No, no, of course not, I'm not, I'M... what?
EJ: Look, um... Nicole, you're sitting pretty. You understand? I mean, I'm going to keep up my end of the bargain. All right? If Rafe can't convince Samantha to get on board, then you are going to be the only mother that Johnny or Sidney have.
Rafe: Well, I think Justin's right. I think that we need to think about this calmly, rationally.
Sami: I appreciate that you're both trying to help. What I don't think you get is that I really don't think I can do it.
Rafe: Even if you get shared custody of your kids?
Sami: Nicole's gonna be there...all the time. Looming over me and my children. She went to jail for what she did, and now she gets to live in the mansion with my kids?
Rafe: Okay, here's the thing. Nicole's gonna marry EJ. So whether or not you sign this agreement, she is going to be in your kids' lives.
Sami: I don't even get that. How can he marry her? What she did to him is almost as bad as what she did to me.
Rafe: I don't know, Sami. Evidently, he's forgiven her.
Sami: Maybe he has, but I haven't, and I never will.
Kayla: You know, I always knew that I was classy; I just didn't know you realized it. I'm kidding. I appreciate the compliment. I just don't know why.
Justin: The way you always put the kids ahead of whatever we were going through. And how you never took out any of your troubles on anyone else.
Kayla: Well, I was just, uh...trying to roll with the punches. Yeah, it's, uh... it was a really painful time, and I really don't like thinking about it.
Justin: I remember Joey saying that... he never saw it coming.
Kayla: You know, I think on some level...neither did we.
Daniel: Oh, hey, I didn't expect to see you here.
Victor: I was at Maggie's when you called. What the hell is going on, Daniel?
Daniel: No, no, no, I don't need you to intervene, and I certainly don't need Victor Kiriakis to go on a rant about Chloe; I don't need it.
Maggie: Daniel, just--just-- what happened?
Daniel: Okay, not a word. But Chloe brought Parker in, who was perfectly healthy, by the way, and she said that he was sick and running a fever... in order to see me or get to me or, I, you know--
Victor: She did what?
Maggie: He's right. Not a word. You do know that she's beside herself. So where is she?
Daniel: Uh, she's--she's in the exam room, crying. I was pretty tough on her.
Maggie: Well, I'll take her home.
Victor: Listen, this is not a rant, but a legitimate question. Is she capable of taking care of that baby?
Daniel: You know what? That's not my call. The hospital has a strict procedure in a case like this. Yeah. Yeah, we have to file a report with the Department of Child Family Services.
Chloe: Did Daniel tell you what I did?
Chloe: Do you hate me?
Chloe: Daniel does. More than ever.
Nicole: Uh, don't you think it's weird that you haven't heard from Sami?
EJ: Um...mm, not really, no. I think it's gonna take Rafe a while to talk her down. Here.
Nicole: Thank you.
EJ: To, uh... domestic tranquility.
Nicole: Whatever that is. Hmm.
EJ: How is it?
Nicole: You know, it's perfect. Dirty. Just the way I like it. Strangely... you're the only one who gets it right.
Sami: I don't think you know what you're asking. I can't get past what Nicole did to my kids, or me or our family, our lives.
Rafe: Sami, I do know what I'm asking. I understand, but... that was the past. I am talking about the future. Now, listen. If EJ does marry Nicole, at least you can keep an eye on her. You know what she's doing.
Sami: You're not listening to me, Rafe. Listen to me.
Sami: I can't do it! I mean, literally, I don't think I can do it.
Rafe: Yeah, but from where I'm standing, you don't have a choice. Either you accept what EJ's offering, or...it goes away.
[Cell phone ringing]
Rafe: Gotta take this. [Ringing] Yeah. Um...
Sami: Oh, God. Air. I just--I just need some air.
Rafe: Uh, I'm gonna have to go down to the station early and... Sami? Oh, boy, what are you up to now? things that seemed so important,
Kayla: You know, it's weird. Things that seemed so important, like jobs...
Kayla: They don't seem so important now.
Justin: And the irony of ironies: Our precious jobs that pushed us apart have now brought us back here... across town from each other. Instead of across the globe.
Kayla: That long distance thing was a bitch. The time that you do have together, you spend on... stupid details and checkbooks and...and you forget to say...
Justin: I love you.
Kayla: No matter how mad I got at you...I never stopped loving you.
Justin: I was about to tell you the same thing.
Lexie: Uh... when it comes to my... our father... I find bad to be a relative term.
Chad: Sounds like an evasion.
Lexie: Well, maybe I need to be a little evasive to balance who I know he is... and the fact that I truly love him.
Chad: He, uh...he-- he scares me. Not like he's gonna hurt me or anything like that, but, uh... he's gonna take over my life, if I let him.
Lexie: And you're absolutely right; you should be scared about that. But, um... if you want to give it a go... if you want to test out what it means to be...a DiMera... I'm here for you. And I will back you up any way I can, Chad. 'Cause I think you'd be a really nice addition to our family. So...think about it.
Nicole: You know, it's-- it's kind of odd. Being here with you, without the kids, you know. It makes me want to run upstairs and check on them. You know, maybe I should call Roman and see how Sidney's--
EJ: No, no. No, no. Don't. They're going to be back here soon enough, and I don't really think we should be doing anything that Samantha could construe as being aggressive.
Nicole: So you really do want this agreement to work out? I wasn't just an ace up your sleeve to get Sami to turn it down?
EJ: Nicole, I think there's a possibility of a happy ending for all of us.
Nicole: I hope you're right.
EJ: No, you hope that Rafe can convince Samantha to sign that agreement.
Rafe: Come on, Sami, slow down. Watch out!
Sami: Oh, my God. Aah!
Justin: You're locking the door right before happy hour?
Kayla: Because... I think it's gonna be a very happy hour. Mmm. [Gasps] Ohh. Mmm. Mmm. [Giggles]
Victor: Kate...we need to talk...about our grandson.
Maggie: Chloe, I'll take the 2:00 feeding.
Maxine: This is the form for Children and Family Services.
Maxine: It needs your signature. Uh... don't you think we can let this go, just this once? Chloe's...the poor child, she needs help.
Daniel: Well, maybe this'll help. Hey, sweetie, it's dad. I need to talk to you.
EJ: Okay, so we'll wait for you here. No, father, you heard right. Hernandez is onboard. He's going to try and convince Samantha to sign the agreement. Listen, you're gonna be here in a couple of minutes. Let me just explain it to you when you get here. All right, bye. We are gonna have to get some new photographs taken with you in the picture.
Nicole: Yeah, send them to my mom; she won't know what the hell is going on.
EJ: Yes, she will. She'll know that we're becoming the big...happy family that we talked about.
Sami: Watch where you're driving, you idiot!
Rafe: Sami, slow down, for God's sake.
Sami: [Whispers] I'll kill him.
Rafe: Damn it!
On the next "Days of Our Lives" --
[Tires screeching, crash]
Sami: Oh, my God. That's Rafe! Oh, my God.
Chloe: Why is it so damn hard for you to forgive me?
Carly: My God, I know what was going on here.
Stefano: Rafael Hernandez was just in a very serious car accident.
