[Knock at door]
Melanie : Oh, what are you doing here?
Kate: Well, I had to see you. I understand that you're pregnant, and I wanted to know if there was anything I could do for you.
Melanie: Okay, if that's code for you want me to get back together with Philip, you can just forget it, because it's just not gonna happen.
[Soft pop rock music]
Philip: Hey. What are you doing, hmm... in a bar in the middle of the day? Who's taking care of our son?
Jennifer: I'm--I'm just so glad that you're my friend. I'm so happy to have you in my life.
Jason: I'm glad too. I-I feel bad that we didn't even get a chance to talk.
Jennifer: Oh, it's okay. You know, we'll get together another time.
[Cell phone rings]
Jason: Agh. Not again.
Sami: Hey. Hi. So how'd it go with Johnny?
Rafe: Good, good. He's doing great. EJ showed up, so I decided to come home.
Sami: Did EJ tell you that he's letting me see Sydney today?
Rafe: Yeah. He even let me hang out with Johnny for a while. Couldn't believe it.
Sami: Well, I was just looking over the custody agreement, and it looks pretty good to me.
Sami: Rafe, I think this really could work out. I think we're gonna get Johnny and Sydney back in our lives.
EJ: Father... listen, um, I was thinking. Since we had that conversation, I've had some modifications that I want to make in the plan, you know, for Rafe. No, I don't think now would be a good time. All right, see you later. So... have you had lunch? I thought we could pop out and get something to eat.
Nicole: How come you hung up the phone when I walked in the room?
EJ: Because I'd finished with my conversation.
Nicole: Mm-hmm. And why has Marco been hanging around so much? And what is going on in the basement?
EJ: Oh, that's Father. He's expanding the wine cellar.
Nicole: Pfft, baloney.
Nicole: Oh, yeah. I know what you're doing down there.
[Cell phone ringing]
Jason: Oops, wrong pocket.
Jason: Agh. I'm sorry.
Jennifer: No, no, I understand. You have to take that, really.
Jason: Dr. Walters.
Warden Smith: Got good news for you, doc.
Jason: You found an organ donor?
Warden Smith: Oh, yeah. You should be getting a shipment tonight.
Rafe: So, obviously, I've been skeptical about EJ's transformation.
Sami: Huh. Join the club.
Rafe: Yeah, well, maybe Johnny's being so sick really did change him. Oh, by the way, I talked to a lawyer about that.
Sami: The contract, you had him look at it?
Sami: What did he say?
Rafe: He said it looks legit. There are no loopholes, no hidden--
Sami: Anything. That's awesome.
Rafe: No, nothing.
Sami: That's what I was so concerned about, but that makes me feel so much better, knowing a lawyer looked at it.
Rafe: Oh, hey, guess what else. Looks like you were right about EJ and Nicole. I think the wedding's off.
Sami: What'd you hear?
Rafe: Well, I talked to Nicole this morning. She said it looks like her nanny duties are coming to a close.
Sami: Well, that makes me feel a lot better.
Sami: I mean, the bottom line is, Nicole would do anything to turn my children against me. I know that. So if she's out of the equation, then I don't have a problem.
Rafe: Yeah, looks like it's one less thing that we have to worry about.
Sami: Rafe... I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I think things are really gonna work out.
Sami: I think they are.
EJ: Have you, uh, gone down to the basement?
Nicole: No, I didn't have to.
EJ: Well, I don't know what you think you've seen, but--
Nicole: Dr. Kim said that Johnny has limited depth perception now, and that could throw him a little off balance. So you're building something for him to work with his physical therapist and where he and Sydney can play.
EJ: Oh, and here I thought I was so good at keeping secrets.
Nicole: Oh, from Sherlock Walker-DiMera? I don't think so.
EJ: Where are you going?
Nicole: Guessed right, didn't I? So I'm gonna go look at it.
EJ: No. No, you're not.
Chloe: You don't have to worry about the baby. I left him with Maggie.
Philip: So you could sit here and drink by yourself?
Chloe: It's just one glass of wine.
Philip: You shouldn't be drinking at all. You're nursing him.
Chloe: Hey. "Him"? His name is Parker. By the way, I'm not nursing him anymore. He's on a bottle now.
Philip: Parker. I can't believe you named him after the mother of a guy who wants nothing to do with him or you. I mean, Parker Daniel Jonas?
Chloe: Well, that's too bad. It's his name, and you can't do anything about it.
Philip: He's my son.
Chloe: Not legally. On his birth certificate, it says I am his mother and Daniel is his father.
Philip: I can change that, and you know it.
Chloe: You are just as bad as your mother. You just want to take over. Well, you know what? Over my dead body.
Kate: Couldn't you at least let me come inside?
Kate: Melanie, I didn't come with an agenda.
Melanie: Well, that would be a first for you.
Kate: I brought you a baby gift.
Melanie: Thank you.
Kate: Okay. Let's not be ridiculous.
Melanie: Kate... [Chuckles] I'm not Chloe. So you can't just push me around like this.
Kate: Melanie, I just want to see you open up the present I brought.
Melanie: Okay. It's very pretty.
Kate: I was hoping you'd like it.
Melanie: So it's got a secret potion inside, right? If I wind this thing up, it'll start controlling my thoughts?
Kate: It was Philip's when he was a baby. I used to have to have it playing for him to--to fall asleep. "Moosic, mama." That's what he used to say to me. "Moosic."
Melanie: Why did I know this would be about him?
Kate: Actually, it's about your child... and his... and what's best for that baby.
Melanie: You are just as bad as my father.
Rafe: So EJ wants us to go by the courthouse later, get this thing signed and notarized.
Sami: Could be legal by the end of the day.
Rafe: Sounds like.
Sami: I can't believe it. Do you remember how happy we were? So hopeful. I mean... [Sighs] I really wanted to believe everything was gonna work out that night, and then... then EJ showed up.
Rafe: Yeah, well, guess what. It's over. We are finally gonna be back together, a family again. I love you.
Sami: I love you.
Rafe: And I love you.
Sami: I love you.
Rafe: So you took Allie to school, right?
Sami: Yeah, yeah, she had her skating lesson, and then I dropped her off at school.
Rafe: Mm-hmm. Well, I'll be darned. Looks like we're alone.
Nicole: There is no playroom in the basement, is there?
EJ: Depends on what you call a playroom.
Nicole: Okay, yeah, don't-- don't bother. Like I told your father when I came in here and I saw him and Marco with their heads together, "you know what? I don't want to know." So I will keep my nose out of your business, and I will focus on the kids. That we have in common, right?
EJ: Actually, um, speaking of the children, I'm meeting Samantha and Rafe this afternoon to sign the custody agreement.
Nicole: Do you think she'll go for it?
EJ: I wouldn't think she has a choice if she wants to spend any time with her children.
Nicole: I don't think she's gonna agree to some of those terms. I really don't.
EJ: Well... I've kept up my end of the bargain. If she doesn't want to agree to it, that's her problem.
Woman: Okay, Salem, here I come. Rejected? But I know I sent them a check... I think. How am I gonna get to Salem now?
Jason: Look, I can't really talk 'cause I'm out in public.
Warden Smith: Oh, no problem. I just wanted to let you know so you could start letting your patients know.
Jason: The delivery arrives tonight? You're sure?
Warden Smith: Oh, I'm sure.
Jennifer: Oh, hey. Uh, another patient?
Jason: Uh, well, in regards to another patient, yeah.
Jennifer: They're your whole life, aren't they?
Jason: Them and--and my bowling league.
Jennifer: I have a hard time imagining those surgeon hands touching a bowling ball.
Jason: Yeah, well, maybe I'd be better off if they had, if I wasn't quite so obsessed.
Jennifer: Well, we'll talk about that next time we have coffee.
Jason: I promise to be more present then.
Jennifer: Good, I'll hold you to it. Bye.
Jason: Bye. [Exhales deeply]
Jennifer: All right, doc... sorry I stole your keys. It's sad. You sure don't seem like the type to be up to no good. But you know what? Hope knows about these things better than I do. And maybe that secret... is in the infirmary.
Rafe: Hey, Hernandez.
Sami: [Laughs] Yeah?
Rafe: I really like being married to you, you know?
Rafe: Sounds like someone's up.
Sami: That is just the best sound I have ever heard in the entire world.
Rafe: I'll go.
Sami: Wait, no, I want to go. I just want to find my shirt.
Rafe: How about this?
Nicole: I will call you when I get to the hospital.
EJ: You're going back? Why?
Nicole: Your son does not like hospital food, so I called the nurse, and she said it was okay if I bring him a pizza for lunch.
EJ: Thank you. You're very kind to my children.
Nicole: Well, they will be my children, too, when we're married, right?
EJ: Father, it's me. Sorry I couldn't talk before. Nicole was here. No, of course she doesn't know anything. No, listen, everything is going according to plan, all right? Step one starts tonight.
Kate: I'm as bad as Daniel. Wow, that would be really interesting to hear about.
Melanie: Look, I--mm. I just think you should probably get the hell out of here before he comes home and kicks you out.
Kate: That's a nice try, but I know that he's going to be at the hospital for a few more hours, because I already checked.
Melanie: Of course you did, because you just have everything all figured out.
Kate: Of course I do... because there's a child now-- Philip's child.
Melanie: Oh, believe me, I know.
Kate: Melanie, not too long ago, you wanted this more than anything.
Melanie: Well, not too long ago, I didn't know your son had knocked up my father's wife.
Kate: Okay, I know that you're furious at Philip. I get that.
Melanie: Oh, so we're bonding now. This is good.
Kate: But you loved him once. He still loves you. And you created a child out of that love.
Melanie: You know what? I--can we not do this right now? I'm having a hard enough time as it is keeping my breakfast down.
Kate: You grew up not knowing your father because your mother kept him from you. Do you really want to become your mother? Do you want to do that to your own child?
Philip: Look... I'm sorry I came down on you, okay? I just want to know if you're okay.
Chloe: What, you think I'm cracking up because I'm trying to take a little time for myself?
Philip: No, no, no, no. It's just, you don't seem like you.
Chloe: No, I'm not me... not since that horrible night that we slept together. And I really don't need you telling me how to be.
Chloe: Maggie, what's wrong?
Maggie: Uh, honey, I think he's hungry. You only left me a bottle.
Chloe: Oh, God.
Maggie: You were supposed to pick him up over an hour ago. Um, what happened?
Jennifer: All right. Oh, you're kidding me. Shoot. That's what I needed. That's just what I was looking for. All right. Let's see here. Come on. Yes. Okay, come on. Where is it? Where is it? Come on. No... patient files in here. What is this? All right, yeah. This is what I'm looking for. April Nelson... that's one of the names that Hope told me. I know it is. Sheila Bernhardt. This is it. Okay. All right. This is all numbers, medical codes. Shoot, I need a doctor to read this for me. Come on. I can't read any of this.
Sami: Oh, hey.
EJ: Samantha... Rafe, please.
Sami: Thank you.
EJ: So... I'm serving as my own attorney. Do you have somebody representing you who'll be coming here today?
Sami: Uh, Rafe hired a lawyer to look over the paperwork. [Clears throat]
Rafe: Yep, he says everything seems to be in order.
Sami: So I guess we just have to sign, right, and get out of here?
Nicole: Gosh, I am so sorry I'm late. I-I just came from the hospital, and the traffic was unbelievable.
Sami: What is she doing here?
EJ: I asked her to be here. [Clears throat] She is a party to the agreement.
Rafe: She's what? What are you talking about?
EJ: Uh, Nicole is going to be the children's stepmother.
Sami: The hell she is.
Warden Smith: Lee, I need a word with you. I want you to check my computer for unauthorized activity. Then shut it down. Make sure no one reboots it. I don't want anyone hacking into it again.
Jennifer: Come on, ladies, don't whisper. That's not fair.
Lee: I'll let you know if I find anything. Has there been another problem?
Warden Smith: No. And there's not gonna be one, as long as Brady, the Feds, and the Salem Police don't get wind of what's gonna happen with Bo Brady tonight.
Jennifer: Come on. Oh, I wish I could hear you.
Melanie: Okay, Kate, uh, I'm not gonna completely shut Philip out. Not that I owe you any explanations, but we're gonna share custody or something.
Kate: Ah. Okay, so shuttling a child back and forth, that's not the same as growing up in a home with two parents.
Melanie: Lots of kids do it.
Kate: Yes, I know they do. But is that what the child wants? I'm sure if you asked a kid, they would tell you no.
Melanie: Okay, I get it. I don't need everybody hammering me.
Kate: Everybody? What--okay, so that's what you meant when you said I'm as bad as Daniel.
Melanie: Oh, are you kidding? He never liked Philip, and now he hates him almost as much as he hates you.
Kate: Mm-hmm. Daniel and I do have a very complicated relationship.
Melanie: Well, that's one word for it.
Kate: But I'll tell you something that we would both agree on. I'm sure he wants his grandchild to be happy, and so do I.
Melanie: Do you do this to Chloe too? 'Cause it just must be so exhausting trying to maintain control of the litter that Philip's now responsible for.
Kate: Okay. Right now are you really thinking about your child's best interests? Or are you thinking about getting back at Philip?
Philip: Come here, buddy. Come here.
Maggie: I, um--I tried to call, but your phone was off.
Chloe: Well, I don't--I don't know why he's so hungry. I fed him right before I left.
Philip: You don't keep your phone on when you leave him with somebody?
Chloe: I didn't know it was off.
Maggie: I-I just didn't know where you were gonna be.
Philip: Are you kidding me?
Maggie: Well, you said you were gonna have some lunch, so I just started calling places, and luckily Adrienne--she knew you were here.
Chloe: I-I just wanted a little time for myself. I thought everything was taken care of.
Maggie: Well, you seem to have the magic touch, Philip. He's all quiet now.
Philip: He sure is. You know, I could take him for a walk. Try to get him to sleep, if that's okay with you.
Chloe: I--yeah, sure, go ahead. Oh, wait. He probably wants this.
Philip: Want this?
Philip: Got it. All right, I'll see you later.
Maggie: Okay. You, um--you forgot to leave him, you know, his pacifier with me. Sweetheart, are you all right?
Woman: Okay. I have $5, $6... $7 and... 25, 26... 27 cents... [Chuckles] A bus token... and this.
Rafe: What the hell is going on, EJ?
EJ: Uh, I-I mean, it's all explained here on--on page... six, if you have a copy. Page six of the agreement.
Sami: There is no page six in the agreement.
EJ: There is, Samantha. There is. Here... it simply reflects the change in my circumstances. I-it's, uh... you know, all it says is that, um, if I die before the children reach their maturity, then Nicole, as my wife, has the same rights to Johnny and Sydney that I do.
Sami: You're still planning to marry her.
EJ: Samantha. I-I'm sorry. I told you about this before Johnny was diagnosed. I really don't see what's changed.
Sami: Nicole made it clear to me. You said to both Rafe and me that you weren't going to be marrying him, that you weren't going to be in the kids' lives anymore.
Nicole: I did? Really?
Sami: You lying bitch.
Kate: Well, I'm telling you, Melanie, I have raised children on my own. And it is not easy.
Melanie: My dad's gonna help me.
Kate: Yeah, well, I'm sure he is. But it's not all about financial support. I'm sure that when you first thought about getting pregnant, you were thinking about sharing it with your husband.
Melanie: Of course. But that was before I found out my husband was running around trying to keep from me the fact that he'd gotten another woman pregnant.
Kate: Okay. What Philip did was incredibly stupid, absolutely. But he still loves you. He wants to be the man who is there to bring you tea and crackers when you're nauseous. He wants to be rubbing your back. He wants to be wiping your brow when you're in labor. Melanie, he wants to be there for you--the man who takes over when you're exhausted by the baby. He wants to be there and love this baby and enjoy this baby and worry about this baby that the two of you created.
Melanie: That's a beautiful fairy tale that you've created. There's just one problem, Kate. It's not Melanie and Philip and a baby make three. See, there's another baby, one that's already here. So if you're trying to reunite Philip with the mother of his child, go bug Chloe.
Lee: Keep me posted on Bo Brady.
Warden Smith: Oh, you'll be the first to know anything. I talked to Dr. Walters a while ago, told him we'd have the organs he requested. He was a very happy man.
Lee: That's good.
Warden Smith: Oh, wait. Before you check the computer, I need you to help me with something else. Come on, let's go.
Jennifer: I need to work fast and get the heck out of here.
Nicole: Hey, I'm just as surprised as you are that he still wants to marry me. Relax.
Sami: I don't believe a word out of your mouth. So why don't you explain to me what this is all about? Obviously, you just want to marry her because you know it will drive me crazy.
Nicole: Oh, my God. You think this is all about you? You are so self-involved.
Sami: So if you're not trying to drive me nuts, what's the deal? I thought we had a truce.
Rafe: Well, maybe EJ had his fingers crossed when he made that truce.
EJ: You know, Rafe, we made an agreement in good faith, and I have been living up to it.
Sami: Oh, really? So what's with your plan to marry the Salem slut?
Nicole: Okay, don't call me names, really.
EJ: I really don't see what my personal life has to do with this agreement.
Rafe: Well, it's the fact that you are marrying a woman who ran with Sydney twice. And now you are giving her legal rights to Sami's children, EJ.
EJ: Only in the event that something happens to me.
Sami: I don't care how you phrase it. I don't want her anywhere near my children, ever.
Jennifer: Okay. Let's hope these are clear enough to give us some answers.
Jason: What are you looking at?
Kate: I want you to think about something, all right? Parker... Parker is the brother to your baby.
Melanie: See, I'm having a hard enough time as it is wrapping my head around that, since for months and months and months, I thought that Parker was my little brother.
Kate: Okay, I understand that. I understand how difficult it was for you to find out--
Melanie: You don't give a crap about me.
Kate: I understand how much pain you felt when you found out the truth about Parker.
Melanie: Right. And for one stupid second, I actually tried to convince my dad to take Parker away from Chloe so we could raise him.
Kate: Well, you could still do that, you know.
Melanie: Yeah, right.
Kate: Melanie, Chloe isn't exactly mother material. I think Parker would be so much better off with you and Philip and the baby. I mean, think about it. You could put all of the pain behind you. You could be a family.
Melanie: You make it sound so simple, like I can just go back to Philip... like Chloe will just give up her baby.
Kate: Melanie, you will be surprised at what people will do.
Chloe: Maggie... I don't know how I am or who I am anymore.
Maggie: [Sighs] You have been through so much. And you're not getting enough sleep.
Chloe: Even when Parker's asleep, I can't help but just think about what happened. And I do really stupid things, like--like telling off Caroline Brady, as if it was all her fault.
Maggie: Well, she meddled in something that was none of her business.
Chloe: Yeah, but she just postponed what was gonna happen anyway.
Maggie: Chloe, you would have told Daniel yourself if you had known the truth earlier.
Chloe: Yeah, and he would've left me then. He's not coming back to me. I never imagined that I'd be raising this baby all alone.
Maggie: Honey... you need some help. Okay, um, I tell you what. When Philip gets back, I'll take you and Parker to your apartment.
Chloe: No, no, no. I can't go back there-- my new place. Daniel's paying the rent because he can't stand the sight of me, and that place just reminds me of everything that I've lost.
Maggie: Well, Chloe, if you don't want to go back there, where do you want-- I don't know. Where are you gonna go?
Chloe: [Crying] I don't know. That's why I came here, just to try to think.
Maggie: Okay, now, listen, sweetheart... [Clears throat] You have an infant that you have to take care of. And his needs come first.
Chloe: Yeah, but what about me? I feel like I don't exist anymore. Oh, God, I shouldn't have said that. I love my baby. I really do. And if I don't pull it together soon, I know I'm gonna lose him too.
EJ: Are you saying that you don't want shared custody of the children?
Rafe: L-listen, he's playing you, okay? He dumped this addendum on you because he wants you to back out of the deal. That's it.
EJ: Samantha, the agreement remains exactly the same... unless something happens to me.
Sami: This is obviously some sort of trick, okay? I mean, he's a DiMera. He can make things happen.
EJ: [Clears throat]
Sami: If I sign that, he's gonna use it to take my children away from me and give them to her.
Nicole: Hey, I've been good to Sydney and Johnny. I would never do anything to hurt them.
Sami: Your existence hurts them.
Nicole: You know what?
EJ: Okay, okay. Let's just calm down, ladies, all right? Look, Samantha, why don't we just think of this clause as, um... life insurance? Okay, now, we all know the greatest threat to my life is you. But if, in the event of my death, Nicole has the rights to Johnny and Sydney, I've got a funny feeling I'm going to live to a ripe old age.
Sami: You, maybe... but not her.
Nicole: You threaten me, you'll never see your kids again.
Sami: Oh, really? Want to have that conversation, Nicole?
[All shouting at once]
Rafe: Stop it, stop. Just stop, relax. Chill, chill. Would you just listen to me? This is still a good deal. You get the kids back. That's the most important thing, isn't it?
Woman: Schedule information? Yeah, I need the time of the next bus to Salem. Sure, I'll hold.
Maggie: Chloe, you are not gonna lose Parker.
Chloe: I just--I just get so scared. I can't even make enough milk.
Maggie: So you'll get formula for times like that.
Chloe: Everybody says that breast milk is better.
Maggie: Oh, you know what? I don't care what everybody says. You are a new mom, and you're in a terrible situation. And you need some help. Now, can your mom come?
Chloe: She's got my father and sister to think of. I really don't feel like telling her what a mess I've made of my life... again. I just--I don't need to hear it from her.
Maggie: Okay, well, that's too bad. Okay, then. You're gonna come home with me. I'm gonna take care of both you and Parker.
Chloe: Maggie, thank you.
Chloe: Thank you.
Philip: Your mom's not in good shape... but you got me. I'm your dad. And I just realized I'd walk into a burning building for you. I'm gonna take very good care of you. I'll take care of both of my kids. And no one... no one... is going to stop me.
Kate: I mean, if you think about it, Chloe's life is a complete train wreck. She has no job. She has no prospects. Her husband wants nothing to do with her. Her best friend in the world is Nicole Walker. You know, I think a case could be made that she's unfit to raise a child. And this isn't just any child. This is my grandchild. This is your baby's big brother.
Melanie: You know what? I don't think I can talk about this anymore, okay?
Kate: Okay. Of course. I'm sorry. It's just that it's really killing me, you know, that my two grandchildren are going to be forced to be raised without their father... especially because it doesn't have to be. But then again, that's your decision.
Jennifer: Uh, I was just checking mail. Nothing important.
Jason: Ah, well, I'm glad I ran into you again.
Jennifer: You are?
Jason: Sure. Well, mainly because it's always nice to see you, but less importantly, I realized after I left here that I lost my keys. You didn't see if I put 'em down somewhere or anything, did you?
Jennifer: No, no, I didn't. Uh, why don't you check with the bartender? Maybe someone found them and left them.
Jason: Great idea.
Jennifer: All right. Just please don't notice that this one is missing. Please don't need this again. What I need right now is a doctor to decipher these medical codes... quickly.
Sami: You really think I should sign that?
Rafe: I think it is better than having no rights to your kids at all.
EJ: Thank you. He's right, Samantha. Here.
Sami: This is going in the trash, where it belongs.
Nicole: How do you stand her, Rafe?
Sami: This is an excuse to get Nicole near my kids so she can poison them against me. I know that that is what you both have in mind.
On the next "Days of our Lives" --
Chloe: There's something wrong with him. I know there is.
Nicole: He doesn't even have to give her shared custody! How about that?
Sami: I will see her dead before I let that happen.
