Carly: Bo, what's wrong?
Bo: Not in the Christmas spirit, with, you know, everything that's going on.
Carly: That's why you called me down here, to talk about Christmas trees?
Bo: No, I just... I... I don't know--Christmas... comes at the wrong time of year sometimes. I-I mean, I-- I got Ciara a couple of presents, but my brothers and sisters and ma... forget about all the people here--
Carly: Okay, just, just... tell me what's going on.
Bo: Right. [Sighs] I'm leaving.
Warden Smith: Wait here. I got an interesting text from your husband.
Hope: What'd it say?
Warden Smith: He got your letter. Thanked me for alerting him to the situation. He's totally buying the idea that you're off your trolley again. Maybe his new girlfriend helped him do that.
Hope: If you're trying to get to me, it's not gonna work.
Warden Smith: You know, you've been a problem since the day you got here.
Hope: Have I? Good.
Warden Smith: Snooping around where you shouldn't snoop, finding out things that are none of your business. You know what happens to nosy girls like you? They have to be punished.
Nicole: Listen, I have to go. I just entered the house of Usher.
Brady: Ah, come on, now. EJ and Stefano can't bother you yet. It's still light out.
Nicole: I know, but, you know, they've got these really creepy watchers.
Brady: [Sighs] You know, Nicole, I-I enjoy sticking it to EJ, I really do, but I got to say... I miss you.
Nicole: I know, but faking this breakup... it's for a good cause, Brady. I mean, being with Sydney and taking care of her... it's just... it feels so right.
Brady: I want to see you.
Nicole: All right, look, I will call you as soon as Sydney is in bed. I love you.
Nicole: [Gasps] Okay, Monkey. Ready? Up, up, up, up, up. Boop. Yay. Uh-oh. Looks like the joint is empty, Pumpkin, huh? Hello? EJ? Oh, Mary, where is everybody?
Mary: Mr. DiMera Senior had to go out of town.
Nicole: Okay. Where's EJ?
Mary: He took Johnny to the doctor.
Nicole: Well, nothing would keep EJ from making sure that I get Sydney home on time and being here, so... nothing but an emergency. Something's going on, isn't it?
Sami: What kind of bad news? What's wrong with my son?
Dr. Kim: Johnny has a disease called retinoblastoma. It's a highly curable form of childhood cancer. It stems from immature retinal cells. Now, in Johnny's case, it only is in one eye.
Sami: No, I-I--you must be mistaken, because he has never complained about having trouble seeing the blackboard or--or expressed any concerns about his eye. I-it doesn't hurt him. He hasn't acted sick. I am telling you right now my son does not have cancer.
Will: Did you know that you can sing all of Emily Dickinson's poems to The Yellow Rose of Texas?
Gabi: What's The Yellow of Texas?
Will: It's an old western song from back in the day. Okay, you obviously didn't grow up with my Grandpa Shawn, or else you'd know it. [Clears throat]
Because I could not stop for death it kindly stopped for me
Gabi: Is that your idea of studying?
Will: I'm having a little trouble concentrating.
Gabi: You're worried about Johnny, right?
Will: Yeah, I am. And there's also the fact that... you're so hot... [Both laugh] and pretty... and sweet.
EJ: Uh, w-we, um... obviously, w-we'd want some kind of second opinion.
Sami: Yes. Yes, exactly. A second opinion.
Dr. Kim: Of course, but the cat scan and the ultrasound both confirm--
EJ: Dr. Kim, with all due respect... my son has... he's not been rubbing his eyes, not been complaining. He doesn't have any symptoms.
Dr. Kim: The whiteness in the pupil in the pictures you showed me--that's a classic symptom.
EJ: What do you think?
Lexie: I was afraid of it when I was examining Johnny's eye. I was praying I was wrong.
EJ: S-so how do you treat this?
Dr. Kim: Well, I'll be consulting with a pediatric oncologist, but I'll be recommending surgery.
Sami: Surgery? Are you serious? There's no other way? You can't do radiation treatment or--or something else first?
Dr. Kim: I'm afraid surgery's the only way to completely remove the cancer.
EJ: Okay, look, but after you've done this surgery, after you've removed the tumor... that's it, right?
Dr. Kim: The process is called enucleation.
Sami: What does that mean?
Dr. Kim: I'm afraid we're going to have to surgically remove the eye.
Sami: No. No! No, you are not taking my son's eye, okay? No! This is not happening!
Carly: You're leaving.
Bo: Yeah, it's... it's a case I'm working on. I'M... gonna be gone for a few days.
Carly: You're leaving your daughter at Christmastime. Must be some important case.
Bo: Yeah, it is.
Carly: You would never leave Ciara at Christmas unless... this has to do with Hope, doesn't it?
Hope: What are you gonna do to me?
Warden Smith: Well, it's more of a case of what I'm not gonna do... as you were so delighted to tell me before that your husband and God knows who else would be all over me if anything happens to you. Since I can't have that, I have to handle your situation in a more discreet internal--
Hope: Just tell me! What are you gonna do?
Warden Smith: You aren't giving the orders here, Detective Brady--I am!
Lee: Ho ho ho.
Will: Life is really weird, you know?
Gabi: Why do you say that?
Will: Well, um... if I hadn't met you at the pub earlier, then you wouldn't have showed me the pictures from Mom and Rafe's wedding. And then I wouldn't have seen that Johnny's eye turned up white in every picture... and then he wouldn't be at the hospital right now.
Gabi: I'm sure it's gonna be nothing.
Will: I hope you're right.
Dr. Kim: Mrs. Hernandez, I know that this is something that no parent wants to even think about, but since early intervention is absolutely crucial to the treatment of this illness, let me suggest that we email Dr. Mills my findings. When she's had time to review them, we'll teleconference.
Lexie: In the meantime, I'll book an O.R.
Sami: What? Lexie, didn't you hear him? He has to consult with another specialist first!
EJ: Okay, actually, I think perhaps we can get our own specialist.
Lexie: Dr. Kim is the best.
Sami: He is talking about taking my son's eye!
EJ: I'm sorry, Lexie, but we're not going to allow that to happen unless we're sure it is absolutely necessary.
Dr. Kim: Please, please, I must tell you this cancer is curable if it's caught early enough, but in rare cases, retinoblastoma could metastasize, beyond the eye to the brain, the central nervous system, the bones. So I want you all to reassure yourselves, I do, but, please, I implore you to do it quickly.
Sami: So now you're not just talking about my son's sight, you're talking about his life?
Nicole: Mary, it's time for Sydney's nap. Can you hold her while I call EJ?
Mary: Yes, ma'am.
Nicole: Okay, thanks. Hey, EJ, it's me.
EJ: What do you want?
Nicole: Is Johnny okay?
EJ: I really can't talk right now, okay?
Nicole: I just wanted you to know that I'm back with Sydney, following all the rules.
EJ: Good. Do me a favor, will you? Tell Mary I'll be back late. Have her look after Sydney until I get home.
Nicole: She doesn't have to do that--I can do that.
Nicole: No? Why not?
EJ: This is not the time to push me, Nicole, all right? Just do as I say. You've had plenty of time with Sydney today, so leave her alone.
Nicole: "Leave her alone"-- oh, okay.
EJ: Leave her alone. And don't try and cajole Mary into giving you Sydney, okay? I've told her not to listen to your waterworks.
Nicole: Do you tell her to check the silver after I leave too? Um... EJ is not gonna be back until late, so, uh, he wants you to take care of Sydney. Hey, honey. You have sweet dreams, okay? Kisses. I'll see you soon... I hope. Hey. Remember when I said I couldn't see you until later? Things have changed.
Brady: What kind of change?
Nicole: Get over here now.
Sami: Just keep going to sleep, okay? Mama's gonna talk to the doctor for a second. So, um, has anything changed? Did his father approve the surgery?
Ben: No. Nothing like that. Dr. Kim is still trying to set up a conference with his colleague. But I'm on call just in case there's a decision.
Sami: So, um, what do you think? I mean, do you think that there's... something else, an alternative besides what Dr. Kim is recommending?
Ben: If there were, that's what Dr. Kim would advise you to do. Unfortunately, Mrs. Hernandez, a tumor of the eye--it can't be treated. It has to be removed.
Sami: God, it sounds awful.
Ben: I know.
Sami: And then he'll be... blind in that--I mean, he won't even have a--
Ben: Well, he'll be given a prosthetic eye that'll look exactly like his other eye. It'll even move like his other eye. And you'll have the comfort of knowing that you've done everything possible to make Johnny cancer-free.
Ben: I'm gonna leave you alone.
Sami: Thank you.
Rafe: Hey. Hey. How's he doing?
Sami: He's, um, waking up every few minutes.
Rafe: Mm-hmm. How about you?
Sami: You know... it's all my fault.
Rafe: What? Sami... hey, Sami... this is nobody's fault. Now, if EJ somehow managed to get that into your head--
Sami: I was so busy focusing on EJ...
Rafe: You were protecting your kids.
Sami: I was focused on EJ!
Rafe: Oh, come on.
Sami: I'm his mother, and I couldn't see that-- that cancer was working on my little boy.
Rafe: Can we not go there? Let's not.
Sami: Thank God Will and Gabi saw that photo. Thank God you took them seriously, because if it were up to me, I wouldn't know. I still wouldn't know.
Rafe: Hey, hey, hey, now we know. We know, and we're doing something about it. Come on. Sami, how are you supposed to pick up on--on retinoblastoma? You didn't even know what it was until today.
Sami: I'm his mother. I'm his mother. And I should have known. I should have known.
Rafe: Shh, shh.
Warden Smith: I was just telling Hope that I heard from her husband. He got her letter. Texted me to say how sad it makes him that she's still so disturbed.
Lee: God forbid she'd gotten it in her head to try to escape again. She could have been shot dead on the spot.
Warden Smith: Oh, and if that had happened... not Bo Brady or the governor himself could say that there was anyone to blame but Hope herself.
Hope: You're both insane.
Lee: [Laughs] And, honey, if anybody's qualified to make that call, it's a wing nut like you. [Both laughing]
Carly: So what's really going on, Bo? Does Ciara know that you're leaving?
Bo: Yeah, I, um... gave her an early Christmas present, and... I told her.
Carly: Will I be taking care of her?
Bo: No. Um, she'll be staying with Doug and Julie.
Carly: Okay. And you're gonna do... whatever you have to do to save Hope.
Bo: Whatever I have to do, no matter how difficult.
Carly: You know, this hero thing, it's... [Sighs] it's very attractive... [Chuckles] at least to me, anyway.
Bo: I need you to know... how much I don't want to leave.
Carly: And I need you to know that I will always, always love you.
Rafe: Sami... hey, Sami, you got to know that feeling guilty about this--
Sami: Not helping. I know. Making it all about me, it doesn't help. I know.
Rafe: What's going on with Johnny, with his eye--it's because of cancer. It's not bad parenting.
Sami: It's just... it's--it's... his entire life has been a crap shoot. I mean, I only got pregnant with him--
Rafe: You know, every time I hear that story, I want to smash EJ's face into the sidewalk, so... listen, the point--the point is ever since Johnny was born, you treated that kid like you wished for him and planned for him. You know that.
Sami: I shot EJ. He has been through hell because of something I did. He should have been with me, Rafe.
Sami: He should have been with me when this happened.
Rafe: Sami, listen to me. That kid knows that you would go into a burning building for him. He knows that. That's what's gonna get him through this.
Sami: Oh, God. Oh, God, I just hope you're right.
Rafe: Oh, honey.
Sami: I just want you to be right, Rafe.
Nicole: Hey. You got here fast.
Brady: Whoa. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where's the mistletoe?
Nicole: Are you kidding? It's all me.
Brady: Mmm. Um, you sure about this?
Nicole: Mm-hmm. Yes, I am. Would you like me to draw you a map?
Brady: No, I don't need you to draw me a map. Just--you know where we are?
Brady: We're here.
Nicole: Hey, hey, hey, hey. Don't worry about it, okay? Stefano is out of town. EJ is tied up and is gone the rest of the day. Mary is upstairs making sure that now that I've had my allotted time with Sydney, I can't go anywhere near her.
Brady: So what is this--what is it, payback or something?
Nicole: Come on. You and me... all those little tricks up your sleeve, hmm? Right here in EJ's living room.
Brady: Are you sure?
Nicole: Mm-hmm. Think of all the creative things we can do with that chess set that Stefano adores so much.
Dr. Kim: I have Dr. Mills on teleconference in my office.
EJ: Well--I mean, w-what-- you must know what she said. Does she agree with you?
Dr. Kim: I want the both of you to talk to her. But, yes, she does agree that surgery is the best way to proceed.
Sami: I can't believe this is happening.
Nicole: Here's looking at you.
Brady: Here's to EJ. May he fry in hell. Mm. Not good. [Glass shatters] Go ahead. Yes.
Nicole: [Giggling] Hey, old man... want to watch? [Giggling]
EJ: Well, uh... Dr. Mills certainly didn't seem to have any doubts about surgery being the way to go.
Sami: No. Hey, uh, Rafe... I was wondering if you could do me a favor. Will you call Will for me?
Rafe: Yeah, sure. What do you want me to say to him?
Sami: I just think he should be here. I think Johnny would like to spend some time with his big brother.
Rafe: Yeah? Okay, do you want will to know everything before he gets here?
Sami: I think it would probably be for the best.
Rafe: All right. Don't worry about it. I'll take care of it, okay? You gonna be all right with, uh...
Sami: Yeah. I'm just gonna ignore him.
Sami: [Clears throat] Yeah? [Sniffles]
EJ: Can I have a word?
Sami: Sure. You know... it's a free country.
EJ: Look, Samantha, I just wanted to say... no matter how I may feel about you... no matter what... things you may have done to me...
Sami: [Clears throat]
EJ: I just want you to know that I... I'm really sorry for accusing you of deliberately hurting Johnny.
Sami: Yeah, well, uh, we already cleared that up. You already said you were sorry. Actually, I'm still on the part where, five minutes later, you told me that I wouldn't be able to see him anymore. You remember that, right, how you said that? I'm pretty sure that that's what you should be apologizing for at this point.
EJ: Look, Samantha, I'm just trying to...
Sami: What? What? Trying to pretend like it didn't happen? Because it did. And I remember it. I remember Dr. Kim coming in right afterwards, having to stop us from fighting.
EJ: You know, I remember. I remember you telling Johnny that you were giving him secret, little hand signals, all right? I got over it, so get over it. All right? The more important thing now is him.
Sami: The most important thing is him. This is our son we are talking about, and he is... gonna be going through a lot right now, and we have to set aside what we're doing and-- and focus on him.
Rafe: Will, are you there? Are you okay?
Will: I can't, uh--I can't believe this.
Rafe: Yeah, none of us can. But listen, your mom really wants to see you. Can you get down to the hospital?
Will: Sure. What about, um... what about Allie?
Rafe: Uh, did you give her dinner?
Will: Yeah. She's--she's playing with her dollhouse right now.
Rafe: All right, I'll call Mrs. Henderson, see if she can come over and watch Allie until one of us gets back there, okay?
Will: Okay. Yeah, uh, as soon as she gets here, then I'll come over. Um... can you tell my Mom that, uh... that I'm really sorry?
Rafe: We all are.
Gabi: It's bad, isn't it?
Will: Johnny, um... has cancer in his eye.
Gabi: Oh, my God.
Will: He's just a little kid... you know. He's just a little boy.
EJ: Look, okay, I-I meant what I said before we had all this stupid sign stuff... okay? I would like for us to have some kind of... ceasefire, temporary ceasefire, okay? So we can be civilized to one another. Look, Samantha, I understand that's not a term that you're very familiar with...
Sami: I know how to be civilized. And I'm not gonna rise to the bait, all right? Johnny is sick, and he needs us to be there for him. So in his presence, we are going to tolerate each other. I am not going to let you antagonize me. I'm gonna do what's best for my son, and if you love him, you're gonna do the same thing.
EJ: Love him? I love and adore and worship my son.
Sami: Well, EJ, he doesn't need to be worshiped. He's a little boy. He needs to be taken care of, and he needs love. And telling him that his mother doesn't love him is not taking care of him.
EJ: You know what? If we're gonna start tolerating each other, Samantha, why don't we start it right now, okay? Hey. Thank goodness Dr. Mills thinks we caught the cancer before it spread.
Sami: Thank God for Gabi and Will and Rafe. Will and Gabi saw that photo. They are the ones who identified it. You know that, don't you?
EJ: I know. I know. If it wasn't for them... this could have slipped by.
Sami: Johnny's family saved his life... the family that you don't think he should be around. That's something to think about. And, EJ, I'm telling you right now... I am back in my son's life, and I'm going to see him through this. And I can promise you, I will never, ever let him go after this... not ever.
Hope: You really are the monsters I thought you were.
Warden Smith: See what I mean? Delusional. Have a fun Christmas party, girls.
Lee: Thanks. Time to start stuffing the stockings. You're the expert. I'll let you do the honors.
Hope: I have no idea what you're talking about.
Lee: Really? When cops want to get a suspect's attention, they load up a towel with oranges, and they go to town. Hurts like hell, and you end up covered in big, nasty bruises, but, hey, never shows up on an x-ray, not if you do it right.
Bo: I'm sorry.
Carly: No. Don't be. When I came back to Salem, I thought my life was over. You protected me. And you helped me find my little girl. You made me happier than I ever thought possible. So when you walk out that door, you don't have to look back, okay? And you don't have to have any regrets.
Gabi: Why is he asleep?
Rafe: Oh, they sedated him while they were doing some tests.
Will: So, um, when's the operation gonna be?
Rafe: Maybe tonight. How you doing?
Will: [Sniffles] I don't know.
Will: Hey, dude. What's up?
Johnny: Where's Mommy?
Sami: Okay, um... will Johnny be in a lot of pain?
Ben: No. No, not at all. The operation will be done under a general anesthetic.
Sami: Can I be with him?
Ben: Yes, you can... all the way up until he's taken to the O.R.
EJ: What about afterwards?
Lexie: I'll let you know the minute he's in the recovery room.
Sami: What do I tell him? I mean, um... what's he gonna look like?
Ben: Well, he'll... he'll look like a pirate... with a patch over one eye.
Sami: He'll actually like that. That's cute.
EJ: All right, s-so then after the surgery... you're gonna fit him with a prosthetic eye, right?
Ben: That's correct.
EJ: Okay, and then that's it?
Ben: Well, that'll be it for the surgical part, but we will still have to run several tests.
EJ: What kind of tests?
Ben: We need to make sure that the cancer hasn't spread.
EJ: If it has spread, what then?
Hope: No cops I know have ever beat anyone with a towel full of oranges.
Lee: Right. You do it with a flashlight and a tire iron. [Chuckles] Start stuffing the stocking, or I will. Trouble is, when the person wielding the oranges doesn't know what they're doing, that can cause some serious internal bleeding. But don't worry. I hear they have a lovely little Christmas dinner in the infirmary.
Hope: Yeah? Well, then you eat it!
Lee: Guard! This lady here seems to be having another one of her little episodes. She'll need to be restrained. Cuff her to the bed.
Hope: No! Leave me alone!
Guard: Shut up.
Hope: Leave me alone! Stop it!
Nicole: And to all a good night.
Brady: You know, not that this couch isn't lovely...
Brady: But I wish we were in my own bed.
Nicole: Okay, but you're the one who pointed out all the fun aspects of putting one over on EJ.
Brady: I know. I know I did. I just, uh... I miss you. I miss us.
Nicole: Keeping us a secret is what keeps me able to see Sydney. I mean, she's upstairs right now, and I can't even see her.
Brady: Don't be sad.
Nicole: Take my mind off my problems?
Rafe: Hey, your mom's gonna be here in a little bit, buddy. You had a rough day in the field, didn't you, special agent, hmm? How you feeling?
Johnny: Tired. Is my penguin here?
Rafe: Actually, your penguin's at your dad's. But we're gonna get him for ya.
Johnny: When can I go home?
Will: [Sighs] Um... I'm gonna go find Mom for you, okay?
Rafe: He's gonna go find Mom, and I don't know when you're gonna get to go home, but... we're gonna stay here with you until you do, okay?
Johnny: I want to go to Mommy's house.
Sami: Hey. Hey, sweetheart. I'm so glad you're here.
Will: Uh, Johnny's awake. And now he's asking for you.
EJ: Well, we should go and see him, then.
Sami: Okay. We have our game faces on in front of him. And we explain everything to him, and we make it clear... we make it clear that he is gonna be okay.
EJ: Let's go.
Lee: Thanks. You can go. Throwing something at me? Really? When you're in a locked room with a guard outside? How did you think that was gonna work out? Oh, I'm gonna enjoy this. You've been a pain since you got here. Merry Christmas, bitch!
Bo: I got to get going.
Carly: I know. One thing, though... um, while I had to stay in bed, I-I went online and did your Christmas shopping.
Bo: [Laughs] You did not.
Carly: Of course I did. There was a little list on the bulletin board in the kitchen, you know, all the gifts you wanted to give to people at the station, so I used that.
Bo: How clever.
Carly: They do all the work. You know, they wrap the presents. They're in the hall closet. I can make sure that people get them for you, if you want, if that's okay.
Bo: Nothing about this is okay. And I'm really sorry things... couldn't be different.
Carly: [Whispers] Go. Go. [Sniffles, crying]
[Door opens, closes]
Lexie: Okay, I've got the O.R. standing by.
Dr. Kim: I'll head there now.
Lexie: Yeah, okay, Ron, Ron, um... that's my nephew in there. Take good care of him, okay? Thanks. Oh, God, if you're listening... please make this surgery go smoothly. Please let there be no surprises.
Rafe: I'm gonna give you some alone time with your mom and dad, all right, buddy?
EJ: So... how are you feeling?
Sami: Are you sleepy?
Johnny: No. I want to go home.
Will: What can I do?
Rafe: Well, why don't you go home and see how Allie's' doing?
Will: Sure. Poor Johnny. Some Christmas present, huh?
Rafe: Yeah. Well, hopefully some good can come out of all this.
Will: How do you figure that?
Rafe: Maybe people will realize that Johnny's a little boy that needs his whole family around him. People will stop treating him like a rope in a tug-of-war.
Will: I really hope that happens. But don't forget--this is Mom and EJ that we're talking about.
Rafe: [Chuckles wryly]
EJ: The doctors aren't ready for you to go home.
Johnny: They're not?
Sami: No, sweetie.
Johnny: Why not? What's wrong with me?
On the next "Days of Our Lives" --
Vivian: Victor, this is gonna be a Christmas you'll never forget.
Maggie: Victor, how do I put this? Stuff it!
EJ: We're not going to lose Johnny.
