EJ: Poor, poor Samantha. All alone to her grief.
Sami: What are you doing?
EJ: Same thing I did with the last note. Making sure you don't decide to tell Rafe in a moment of weakness. Now let's find out if you're going to keep your word.
Sami: Sydney. I can't believe you're still alive.
Rafe: What'd you say?
Nathan: Hey. The bill is paid. Check this out. Apparently they have one of those, uh, robo-cams halfway down the slopes. Check it out.
Stephanie: I look demented.
Nathan: You look like Lindsey Vonn.
Stephanie: She's blond.
Nathan: The form. Woman, you can ski. You know what really irritates me?
Stephanie: Uh, when someone sits around while someone else does all the packing?
Nathan: No, when dudes don't take their ski-lift passes off their jackets when they get back. They just walk around like, "Oh, yeah, this is my ski-lift pass. Just been, uh, hitting slopes. You know, 'cause I'm cool." I'm gonna be one of those dudes.
Stephanie: Why don't you just tell people you went skiing?
Nathan: 'Cause that's not why I'm doing it. It's a souvenir about the best trip I ever had. The best. Okay, I'll help you pack.
Stephanie: No, no, that's not it.
Nathan: Then what is it? I mean, I don't want to pack, because then it's real that we're leaving, and I don't want it to be real.
Stephanie: Nathan, listen, I...I have to talk to you about Melanie.
Carly: Um, I was just checking in to see if you talked to Melanie yet. Daniel, I know you're angry with me, but please call me. I understand that eventually you have to tell her that you're her father, but I--I think you were right before. She's--she's been through so much already, and we should be worried about how much information she can handle. Yeah. Okay. Who are you kidding, Manning? You're worried what she's gonna think about you when she finds out about this next swell piece of your history.
[Machine beeping softly]
Melanie: I was just having a dream that someone was staring at me.
Daniel: Yeah? So how do you feel?
Melanie: It always takes a couple minutes to kind of... wake up.
Daniel: Yeah, I was like that through my first E.R. rotation.
Melanie: Mm. How are you doing?
Daniel: Oh, let's see what we got here.
Melanie: That is a very antediluvian way to take a pulse.
Daniel: You and your big words, you sesquipedalian. Strong and steady.
Melanie: Good. So, this joking, are you stalling from telling me something bad?
Melanie: You sure? 'Cause when I just woke up, you looked very serious, like you were bracing yourself to give me some bad news.
Sami: Uh, Rafe, I didn't hear you come in.
EJ: Ooh, careful, Samantha. Big Brother is watching, you know.
Rafe: What's going on? Something happen?
Sami: Uh, yeah. Um, yeah, it did.
Philip: All right, take care, buddy.
Chloe: Philip Kiriakis, there was actually just a smile on your face.
Philip: Yeah, yeah. I'm just keeping him up to speed about Melanie. He's almost as happy as I am. Have a seat.
Chloe: Oh, thank you. Yeah, well, Max is the only real family that Melanie has. Unless you count Carly, the mom who shot her.
Philip: And I thought I had a complicated family.
Philip: How you doing? Any better?
Chloe: [Sighs] Yeah, I am. Thanks to you.
Philip: Not like I know anything about anything.
Chloe: Philip, you can't just drink coffee. You need to eat your sandwich, okay? It's not good for you. Keep your strength up.
Philip: You're always so maternal. I'm sorry.
Chloe: Philip, no, please. I don't want you to ever feel like you need to walk on eggshells around me, okay? Especially after you've been so good to me, talking to me about my problems, after everything you're dealing with.
Philip: How are things going with Daniel?
Chloe: Well, we never really have a chance to talk. But I was thinking about what you said, and you're right. He's going through the same thing I am. Just like me, he's facing the fact that he will never have his own child.
Daniel: I'm sorry if I keep worrying you. Like I said before... there is nothing wrong with you. You know, your recovery could actually be called a ten. Remarkable.
Melanie: Oh. It's probably all the peace and calm I've been getting.
Daniel: Yeah. You've, uh, been through a hell of a lot these last few days.
Melanie: I got to be honest with you. When you wake up and find out that you've been shot on your wedding day, you think, "Well, it's probably the most interesting piece of information I'm gonna be getting that week," but Carly was just getting started.
Daniel: Yeah, you could say that.
Melanie: Did something happen to you too?
Daniel: No. No. No, not really.
Melanie: Okay. Then back to my original question--if I'm fine, why are you still being so serious?
Daniel: Well, 'cause I am a doctor, and we are very serious people.
Melanie: Well, thank goodness for that, because without you, I wouldn't be here. [Chuckles] What? What did I say?
EJ: You just made a very big mistake.
Sami: Yeah, um, EJ... sent me a video of Sydney that, uh, Nicole had taken... he just found it.
Rafe: Really? Let me see it.
EJ: Don't you dare.
Nathan: [Sighs] Why in God's name do we have to talk about Melanie all the time?
Stephanie: Because you wonít. The subject is completely off-limits to you, and that worries me.
Stephanie: Because if you were okay with it, if you didn't care, then talking about it or about her wouldn't bother you. I mean, the way you avoid it makes me feel like it's just not settled.
Nathan: Stephanie, it is settled as settled as can be, okay? She's married to Philip. Come on. I mean, they're somewhere between Salem and Timbuktu, or wherever the hell they're going.
Stephanie: But they're gonna come back.
Nathan: Stephanie, why are you doing this? Stop, all right? Melanie's the past. You, you're now, all right? And the future.
Stephanie: You really mean that?
Nathan: Of course I mean that. And I'll prove it to you.
Philip: No, no, I will not help you do this. I mean, does it matter that the guy also helped save my wife's life?
Chloe: What was that all about?
Philip: Uh, I guess you can hear this from me.
Philip: That was the secretary of the board for the hospital. They're, uh, considering disciplinary action against Daniel.
Philip: For letting Carly into Melanieís room.
Chloe: Oh, God. That woman, she's like a one-person demolition derby.
Philip: Well, I'm sorry, but Daniel knew there was a restraining order.
Chloe: Yeah, well, so did she, and she broke the law. And what, Danielís gonna pay for it?
Philip: Hey, we don't know that. I'll do what I can, okay?
Chloe: [Sighs] I know. Thank you.
Philip: Uh, well, I better get back to Melanie.
Philip: And don't worry about Daniel, okay? He's gonna be fine. I'll see you.
Chloe: Yeah. No thanks to Carly.
Rafe: Let me see it.
Sami: Uh, no.
Rafe: No? What do you mean no? Why not?
Sami: Well, I mean that, look, Rafe, you were really upset. I don't think you should put yourself through that.
Rafe: You just watched it.
Sami: I know, and... and it was upsetting. I mean, I had to turn it off.
Rafe: Well, yeah, but when I walked in, it was, like, your-- your eyes, they were filled with light and with hope, and...
Sami: I was just remembering her.
Rafe: Yeah. Right. Mm-hmm. That's right. She's gone.
Sami: Rafe, there's something I have to tell you.
EJ: Don't you do it. Come on, Samantha, you've gone this far. Don't you do it. Don't blow it.
Daniel: I'm sorry. I, uh, you know, I just got something in my eye.
Melanie: You're in such a weird mood today.
Daniel: No, I'm, um, tired. That's all. I better go weird-out my other patients, right?
Melanie: Yeah, right. I'm not buying that.
Daniel: Oh, yeah? Buying what?
Melanie: That you're just a serious man. You have something in your eye. Whatever it is that's bothering you, does it have something to do with Carly?
Daniel: No, why would you say that?
Melanie: 'Cause she's ruined everybody else's life. Why not have a go at yours? And because you've been her biggest defender until right now when I dissed her and you chimed right in, which is quite out of character for you.
Daniel: I told you I was tired.
Melanie: I know why she has Bo eating out of the palm of her hand. Has she got something on you too?
Daniel: No. No, not exactly.
Melanie: Well, then what is it?
Philip: Hey, you're awake.
Melanie: Hi. Oh, Philip, have you gotten any sleep?
Philip: Oh, me, I'm fine. You're the patient.
Daniel: Well, Philipís here. I'm, uh, I'm gonna get going.
Philip: Oh, hey, can I have a word with you?
Daniel: Sure. Yeah.
Philip: So, uh, I heard the board might discipline you for letting Carly into Melanieís room.
Daniel: All right, well, let's not, uh, let's not tell Melanie.
Philip: Wait, I just want you to know I have your back. Okay? I know everything you've done for Melanie. All right?
Daniel: Not everything.
Carly: Hey, Chloe.
Chloe: Dr. Manning. I was just thinking about you.
Carly: You were?
Chloe: You're surprised?
Carly: Uh, I--maybe it's a coincidence. I've been trying to get in touch with Daniel, but he's not answering his phone.
Chloe: Oh, really? You're still not done with him? You don't think you've done enough damage?
Carly: Excuse me?
Chloe: Don't play innocent with me, okay? I know everything.
Rafe: What is it?
EJ: Samantha, Samantha, Samantha, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Rafe: Oh, something did happen, didn't it?
Sami: Well, see, I-- let me just get rid of it, okay? It's-- hello?
EJ: Samantha, it's me.
Sami: I know.
EJ: You alone?
Sami: Not really.
EJ: Rafe's there, is he?
EJ: Listen, I, uh, want you to stay calm, but, uh... I made the ransom drop. Everything went fine as far as I can tell. Look, I know you must have a million questions, but we probably shouldn't stay on the phone too long, in case Rafe gets suspicious.
Sami: Uh, yeah, I agree.
EJ: Look, I realize this-- you know, it must be hard to keep it from him, but, uh, we cannot have a repeat of what happened last time, okay? The only thing that matters now is that we get Sydney back. You understand?
Sami: I don't need you to keep reminding me.
EJ: Good. Listen, uh... you know, I've been a little bit agitated, uh, since I made the drop. Just not really been feeling myself. Why don't you make an excuse and come meet me at the mansion? I could really use someone to talk to. Can you do that, please?
Philip: I gotta be careful.
Philip: There we go.
Philip: Yeah. You just picture that beach in Greece, okay?
Melanie: Philip, I'm good at a lot of things, but denial is not one of them. I can't stop picturing that crazy woman shooting me by picturing some beautiful beach in Greece.
Philip: I know. I actually like that about you.
Melanie: Good. This is out of my control now. Keep thinking about her, and...
Philip: And what?
Melanie: How I have a father out there somewhere. And that infuriating woman will not tell me who he is. Which, when you think about it, can only mean one thing.
Philip: What's that?
Melanie: He's worse than Trent. And I did not think that was possible.
Carly: I'm not sure I know what you're talking about.
Chloe: Well, you have a pretty good idea, don't you?
Carly: Daniel told you?
Chloe: No, he didnít. He's trying to keep it from me or protect me or whatever.
Carly: How did you find out?
Chloe: Is that what matters to you? You come back here and ruin life after life, and you care where the leak came from?
Carly: Can we sit down, please? Or better yet, let's take a walk.
Chloe: And, what, talk things over? This may come as a big surprise to you, Carly, but I don't like you, and I don't want to talk things over with you.
Carly: Chloe, I know you're upset. I understand--
Chloe: Wow, that's insight. Daniel, the man that I love, after a whole lot of pain and suffering, has finally found a life that he's happy with. And you just breeze in here and destroy it just like that?
Carly: I don't think this will destroy his life. I really donít.
Chloe: That's not your call, is it? You know what I don't get? I don't understand how you live with yourself. Did you even stop for one second to think about how this would affect Daniel?
Carly: Of course I did. I did. And I think it's horrible he has to find out after all these years, but I couldn't tell him. I couldnít.
Carly: And I know that it's painful, but I think the two of you can get through this. Look, you may not want to hear this, but I have thought and thought about this. I don't know if you believe in a higher power, but isn't it remarkable the coincidence that she already knew him? Not only knew him, but--but liked him and admired him. And vice versa. I mean, you saw how hard he fought to save her life. Chloe, I swear, I think Daniel loved Melanie long before I even told him that she was his daughter.
EJ: You are going to be strong, right? Samantha, for Sydneyís sake, yes?
Sami: Yeah, fine. Um, whatever. Look, I'm in the middle of something, okay? I have to go.
Rafe: Who was that?
Sami: [Sighs] It was EJ.
Rafe: Ah, EJ. What'd he want?
Sami: He was reminding me. I... I must have lost track of time watching the video. I told him that I would pick Johnny up and take him over there a little early.
Rafe: Well, I can pick him up for ya.
Rafe: Not a problem.
Sami: But, um, I kind of want to go. Spend some time with Johnny on the way, and I think it'd be good just to get out of the house, okay?
Sami: Thanks. I love you. I'll see you later.
EJ: Your mother did very well. She did. Which that means she did what she was told to, for a change. I have to go away for a little bit. But don't worry, 'cause I'm gonna be back very, very, very soon. And then you and I are gonna be together for a long time. Hmm? How does that sound? Is that good? Your mother's not gonna know what hit her. Neither will Mr. Hernandez. Anna. Anna. Look who just woke up.
Rafe: Well, sorry to doubt you, Sami, but that call didn't sound like you were talking about Johnny to me. Let's see what's going on here.
Rafe: So, EJ sent you a video, did he? Yeah, I'll bet. Why would he do that? You sure seemed nervous just now, Sami.
[Cell phone rings]
Rafe: Hernandez. Right. Good work. I'll be right there.
Sami: So I know you made the drop. Did you see anything?
EJ: No, nothing.
Sami: [Sighs] I didn't think you would have. I just couldn't help but ask. I know this is crazy, but I really think we might get Sydney back today.
EJ: Look, Samantha, we cannot be too hopeful, okay? We don't know she's alive.
Sami: But the video.
EJ: No, I know. I'm just saying we need to keep our wits about us, okay?
Sami: Yeah. Yeah, okay.
EJ: And it is extremely important that we don't involve Rafe in this, you understand?
Sami: I know, okay? You don't have to keep reminding me.
EJ: All right.
EJ: Look, I'm sorry, Samantha. I know that you didn't tell Rafe anything. I have to ask you a question, and I want you to be very honest with me. Do you think he suspects something?
Sami: Yeah. I do.
Nathan: You think Maggie would be disappointed if I gave up being a doctor to become a ski instructor?
Stephanie: Aren't ski instructors supposed to know something about skiing? [Laughs]
Nathan: Check it out. Ready? "Nathan Horton--doctor of the slopes." Huh? No? All right.
Stephanie: Do you--do you think it's weird how much we talk about wanting to stay here and not going back?
Nathan: Everybody's got to have their fantasies, right?
Stephanie: Is this yours? Being in the country, away from everything?
Nathan: Oh, well, the central element of my fantasy is being with you, so the location's not as important as the cast. And real life is starting to intrude. We are dangerously close to paying for another night here.
Stephanie: We could do that.
Stephanie: You don't work until tomorrow. We can drive back early in the morning. I'll drive you, and you can sleep in the back. Think about it.
Stephanie: We can go see that band again. What?
Nathan: I have, like, 12 messages from my grandma. Something's wrong.
Chloe: What'd you just say?
Carly: That I think things can work out for them.
Chloe: No, no, you--you said that Daniel is Melanieís father? Oh, my God.
Carly: Oh, God. You said that you knew.
Chloe: What I knew was that Daniel is facing disciplinary action because he let you into Melanieís room.
Chloe: You're a one-two punch, you know?
Carly: Oh, Chloe, I am so sorry.
Chloe: So you told Daniel that Melanie is his child?
Chloe: And he believed you?
Carly: Chloe, I am so sorry, but it's true.
Chloe: Is that how you convinced him to let you in to see her?
Chloe: 'Cause you may have conned Daniel, but not me, okay? You're never gonna make me believe that Daniel is Melanieís father. Never.
Daniel: You told her?
EJ: You did. You blew it, Samantha.
Sami: EJ, no, I didn't, all right? Stop--stop it, all right? I didn't blow it.
EJ: No, no, you must have said something. You must have said something, Samantha, otherwise--
Sami: I am doing the best I can. He is already suspicious of you. He's an FBI agent. Rafe was born suspicious.
EJ: Okay, well, you remember what happened last time, Samantha, okay? We have one last chance. One last chance. You understand what that means?
Sami: Of course I do.
EJ: Okay, well, if this doesn't work out, if we don't see our daughter again, it will be because of that man. That man.
Nathan: Hey, it's me again. Um, we're leaving now. We're heading back. So just please call me, all right? Why can't I get through to her?
Stephanie: Maggie is fine.
Nathan: We don't know that, Steph. I mean, you know, I should have never left her alone.
Stephanie: You didnít. You knew how many people were looking out for her.
Nathan: Yeah, but not really. With Grandpa Mickey gone, and--and Melanieís moved out now.
Stephanie: Okay, we are gonna leave right now, and we're gonna find out exactly what's wrong.
Nathan: Okay. Thank you. Been such a great time here. But it's over.
Nathan: All right. Let's go.
Philip: You know, maybe your, uh--maybe your father's a really great guy.
Melanie: Philip, he hooked up with a trigger-happy, husband-stabbing, lying piece of trash. I don't think the odds are very good.
Philip: I think the odds are he's pretty remarkable.
Melanie: Philip, let's look at his track record. He has awful taste in women, and he doesn't use protection.
Philip: Melanie, you are so-- you're so tough and so smart, like Carly.
Melanie: Like Carly? Don't say that.
Philip: Hey, hey, but you're also honest. And you're--you're kind, you know, and you don't want other people to know it or see it. Where'd you get that from?
Carly: So by the way she was talking, I thought she knew.
Daniel: Who else did you tell?
Daniel: Oh. Little bit of pillow talk? Tell your new boyfriend the intimate details of my life?
Carly: He's known about Melanie since I got here.
Daniel: I think you need to get the hell out of here, and keep your damn mouth shut. Now, do you think you can manage that?
Carly: I'm sorry.
Daniel: Now, Carly, if Melanie finds out from anyone other than me, your life won't be worth living. Chloe...
Chloe: Well, your dream came true. You're a father now.
Philip: What are you laughing at?
Melanie: Oh, I was just picturing Mother's Day. You know what? Maybe you and me and Vivian and Kate and Carly can go out to a lovely Mother's Day brunch.
Philip: Oh, that's a great idea.
Melanie: 'Course we'd probably have to have 'em go through a metal detector first.
Philip: Yeah, we'll get--food taster too.
Melanie: Yes, good. And also plastic knives and forks.
Melanie: Maybe I'll just take Maggie out. You know, I have you and I have Maggie, and that's a lot.
Philip: You have more people that love you than that.
Melanie: If you say Carly, I will smack you.
Philip: No, no, no, I was thinking about Daniel. I really think he thinks of you as more than a patient. He really cares about you.
Melanie: Well, that's probably because when Chloe was in the hospital, I saved her life.
Philip: You're a hero. You're a hero.
Melanie: I am a hero.
Nurse: Mrs. Kiriakis?
Melanie: Hi. You look new.
Nurse: That's right. Transferred in from Springfield General. Sir, would you mind stepping outside for a minute? I need to check her vitals.
Philip: Uh, sure.
Melanie: He's not "sir." He's Philip.
Philip: Thank you.
Melanie: You're welcome.
Philip: I'll go. I'll go to Java, get you a mocha.
Philip: You take good care of her, okay? See you soon. Love you.
Melanie: Love you too.
Nurse: Is this "Kiriakis" as in the Kiriakis Research Center?
Nurse: Well, no wonder you get a private room. Other than getting shot, you seem to be a pretty lucky girl-- rich, rich husband, who's also drop-dead gorgeous.
Melanie: Yeah. You know, I used to work here too.
Nurse: Is that right?
Melanie: Mm-hmm. I worked at the nursing school program. Actually, I was wondering about one of the doctors I used to work with. Um, Nathan Horton, has he asked about me, or...?
Nurse: I'm not sure I know who that is.
Melanie: He's young, um, dark hair, kind of good looking.
Nurse: Well, I look forward to meeting him. Mrs. Kiriakis, is something bothering you?
Melanie: No. Hm-mm, no. I just... just wondering why he hasn't come by to see me.
Nathan: So I'm gonna stop by the hospital. Meanwhile, I'm gonna keep trying to get a hold of Maggie.
Stephanie: Yeah, maybe she's there.
Nathan: Yeah, maybe she is. I got to check my schedule, and start going over my case loads. [Sighs]
Stephanie: Vacation is officially over.
Nathan: Mm-hmm. Hey, but look at the bright side. With Melanie and Philip on their honeymoon, we don't have to leave Salem just to be together. We can even indulge in some public displays of affection.
Stephanie: I don't want you to leave. You gonna be gone long?
Nathan: No. I'm just gonna catch up on what I missed while we were gone, all right? See you later.
Daniel: I just found out last night, and I have been waiting... for the right time to tell you.
Chloe: You must be very happy.
Daniel: I'm, uh, I'm overwhelmed. Furious with Carly.
Chloe: So she was telling the truth. She really did think I knew. Is it true?
Daniel: I--I think so.
Chloe: Did you love her?
Daniel: No. It wasn't like that. Wasn't really serious.
Chloe: Well, it is now.
Daniel: It is now.
Chloe: [Sniffs] You know, when I was at the hospital, Melanie, she was just so nice to me, and... so good at her job. Of course she would be, with two doctors for parents.
Daniel: Chloe, please just tell me this doesn't change things between us.
Chloe: That's a little naive, don't you think? You're never gonna be the same. You're a father now.
Carly: Not thinking about taking a dive, are you? Because I don't want to have to fish you out again.
Rafe: Well, look who it is. Looks like you're in as good a mood as I am.
Carly: You know when they talk about having one of those days?
Carly: I'm having one of those lives.
Rafe: Yeah. Tell me about it.
Carly: Listen to me complaining. Bo told me about the baby. I'm so sorry. How's Sami holding up?
Rafe: Oh, I don't know.
Carly: Well, she must be reeling.
Rafe: Yeah. Well, now one minute she's a mess, and the next... she's a mess. Something's going on.
Sami: How long do you think it'll be?
EJ: Don't know. Could be a while.
Sami: God, I'm so scared.
EJ: I know.
Sami: I wish Rafe were here. I mean, you know, he's just my rock, and it's, um... sorry. It's just hard to do this alone.
EJ: Come on. You're not alone. You got me.
Stephanie: Philip. Aren't you supposed to be on... what are you doing here?
Nurse: Hi. Can I help you?
Nathan: Oh, hey. You're new here. I'm Nathan Horton. I work here.
Nurse: Oh, that's right. As a matter of fact, a patient in room 306 was just asking about you.
Nathan: Really? Who's that?
Nurse: Three west. May I help you? Kiriakis gunshot.
Nurse: No, his wife.
Carly: Do you think she needs to see someone? A--A professional?
Rafe: I don't know. Listen, after everything you've been through, the last thing you need to be thinking about or talking about is my problems.
Carly: I see how you worry about her. She's lucky to have you.
Rafe: Right. I don't seem to be able to take care of her anymore.
Carly: I wouldn't say that.
Rafe: Yeah, I don't know. Not sure of much of anything anymore.
Sami: Um, sorry. Sorry, I, um, I should be strong.
EJ: It's okay. Think if anyone understands the stress, it's me.
Sami: Yeah, that's true. But I have to be strong for Sydney.
EJ: Yeah, well, if there's anything I can do to help.
Sami: You know, EJ, I want to thank you.
EJ: You don't have to.
Sami: I know I donít. I want to. I want to thank you for everything you have done to try to get Sydney back. It means everything to me. But, um, it's nice to see that guy I've always known is inside of you. It's nice to see him again.
Carly: There's only one person who can take care of Vivian, and that's me.
Daniel: Cut the crap. And you listen to me.
Nathan: I think you still care about me.
