Will: You know what, I-- I don't get it. Why are you giving up?
Will: No, no, why do you want Sydney to be dead? 'Cause she's not.
Sami: I don't want her to be dead, Will.
Will: Oh, come on! Mom! Tell the truth. Do you really think there's no hope for Sydney? None at all?
EJ: This is wonderful, isn't it? Now your daddy knows exactly what to do thanks to your Auntie Anna. So change of plans...for now.
[Cell phone rings]
EJ: Um, Anna, could you take Sydney next door, please?
Anna: Yes, come see me, baby.
EJ: Thank you.
Anna: Come see me.
Rafe: EJ. Sami wants you to join us for an impromptu family gathering.
EJ: An impromptu gathering. For what purpose?
Rafe: She wants us all to be there when she tells the twins that Sydney’s not coming home.
Victor: Oh, good, I'm glad I ran into you. How's Melanie?
Philip: "How's Melanie"? How do you think she is? She's a mess. She's overwhelmed. She just got married, got shot, finds out she has a new mother, not to mention who her father turns out to be.
Victor: Well, it's not Bo if that's what you're worried about. I mean, he did not sire that girl, I can tell you that.
Daniel: I'm Melanie’s father?
Daniel: No, Carly. That's not even possible. Why--why--why would you say something like that?
Carly: Daniel, please, please, you know it's not impossible.
Bo: Okay, thanks. They picked up Vivian’s man Gus. Bringing him in now.
Hope: Hey, great. So what's the plan?
Bo: Well, since you heard him in the basement, uh, we'll have you pick him out of an audio lineup, charge him, and then leverage him into giving up Vivian.
Hope: Well, uh...
Hope: What if I can't identify his voice?
Bo: You don't think you can?
Hope: Well, it all happened so quickly. I mean, I hate to put all of this on my memory. Look, bottom line is we have to stop Vivian, right?
Bo: Right. And there are other ways.
Sami: Will, listen to me. Would you look at me? Please? I don't want Sydney to be gone forever. How can you even ask me that? But we have to do this. Okay, we have to...face facts. Johnny and Allie, they have been asking questions. They've been talking to you too. With the evidence that the FBI gave us... we can't let them be confused anymore. They know we're sad. They know we're mourning. And we have to give them an answer. We have to explain to them why.
Will: Okay, yes, but they're too young to understand even if we tell them.
Sami: Maybe. But at least they'll have the words, you know? They'll be able to talk about it with us. Listen, you and me, we can, uh, we can still have hope if we want to.
Will: Yeah, right.
Sami: But you have to understand that Rafe, and Uncle Bo, and the whole FBI-- they are telling us that this is the end of the line. So what we're waiting for is a miracle.
EJ: Look, uh, I'm very sorry, Rafe, but, uh, I think the idea of a final good-bye is, uh, a bit more than I'd bargained for today. You know, um, emotionally.
Rafe: Well, the twins have been asking questions and Sami doesn't want to leave them hanging any more.
EJ: [Sighs] I suppose you're right. Well, if you don't mind, I'd like to pick the venue. I'd like to do this at the pier.
Rafe: The pier.
EJ: It's, uh, it's where Sydney disappeared and, uh, it's where they think... well, where... they think she may be.
Rafe: Okay, well, I don't know. I'll talk to Sami. If she says no, then I'll call you back. Otherwise...
EJ: Otherwise, I will see you in an hour, yes?
EJ: Anna! Darling, a little ray of sunshine has fallen from heaven. And we have a little work to do...now.
Rafe: Hey, there.
Kate: What are you doing here?
Rafe: Well, uh, came here to see EJ, but he's not here.
Stefano: Hernandez. Why the hell are you still here?
Rafe: "Why am I here"? Well, that is a good question. I am here basically doing the same thing that you are, which is wondering why, since EJ has lost his daughter, he--he doesn't seem to be upset. Any idea why?
Philip: So Bo is not the father. That's a relief. Who is it?
Victor: You know as much as I do.
Philip: Really. Really. Well, that wasn't the case before the wedding, was it? Or the week before that or the week before that. You knew Carly was Melanie’s mother.
Victor: Don't try and lay this on me, Philip.
Philip: Why the hell not? You and that creep Vivian have been in this together since the day she got back to Salem.
Victor: That's not true. I only found out about--
Philip: Hey, just spare me the lies, okay? I'm really getting sick of them. We're done.
Victor: Now you listen to me. The only person lying here is the same person that shot Melanie and destroyed Bo's marriage. Carly Manning. You want to make sure somebody gets punished, she's your target.
Daniel: So--so--so you're saying the night we met...
Carly: In New York at the medical conference. I was in a horrible place with Lawrence and I-I went to the conference to get away. And met you. And you were wonderful. And we had too much to drink. And we went back to your room. And...
Daniel: And you never told me that you were married until the next morning.
Carly: I just felt so horrible. I felt guilty and I knew it was wrong from the beginning. And I... we--we got past it. We were gonna forget that part, right? We--we--we were just gonna be friends. Remember we said that?
Daniel: Yes, yes, yes.
Carly: And we even spent a few extra days together just talking and laughing. And--and then I ran into my old friend.
Carly: Yeah. And I introduced you. And--and I knew--I knew from--from the minute I saw you together that--that you were so right for each other.
Daniel: No, but you were pregnant.
Carly: By the time you and Rebecca were planning your marriage, yeah, I-I knew. But I...
Carly: Daniel, we were--
Daniel: But what?
Carly: Please, we were in such different places. How could I say anything if I was gonna ruin your happiness and Rebecca’s? And my--my husband was... I don't regret that night I had with you. You needed me for whatever your reason and God knows I needed you. And when I came back to Salem last fall, I swear to you, you were the last person I expected to find here. I knew my daughter was here, but not you.
Daniel: What--but d--d--does Melanie even know about me? Wh--
Carly: No, no. She asked, but I-I-I couldn't tell her.
Daniel: You couldn’t. Well, why in the hell doesn't that surprise me?
Melanie: [Gasping] Help. Help. Help. Just do it.
Vivian: I'm sorry. What?
Melanie: Do what Carly said. Just kill me. [Sigh]
Stefano: Good night, Mr. Hernandez.
Rafe: Okay, night.
Kate: Good night. Okay, Stefano, EJ just found out. He probably hasn't had the time--
Stefano: I don't give a damn about any get-together that I'm not invited because--darling, come inside.
Stefano: That is not what I am concerned about, all right? As I told you before, it is about Elvis, all right? There's something--there's something off. He's up to something.
EJ: For God's sake, Anna, can you please hurry?
Anna: This can't be rushed.
EJ: Look, can you just get a move on, all right?
Anna: Honestly, EJ, I was not sold on your old plan, but this new one is--
EJ: Anna, concentrate, please!
Anna: Listen to me. Would you listen to me?
EJ: No, I'm sorry. Would you just--
Anna: You have not thought this through. You could be caught.
EJ: Anna, be quiet. Finish it. Now.
Carly: Daniel, I wanted to tell you before I told Melanie.
Daniel: Really. And this was your first opportunity?
Carly: No, it wasn’t.
Daniel: I mean, how many medical conferences did we attend? How many--how many times did we consult on the phone?
Carly: Daniel, I-I-I wanted--
Daniel: You--you came-- you came to my wedding. Rebecca and I, we--we--we met you in Denver. We met you in London!
Carly: I know. I know. But that was the last time. Do you remember?
Daniel: Meaning what?
Carly: Meaning Lawrence had become... I cou--I--I couldn't go anywhere after that. I couldn't see anyone. I couldn't call anyone. I had stopped practicing medicine. He built walls around me. And every day, he just moved them closer.
Daniel: Okay, right, right, so you were a victim for 20 years. Oh, come on, Carly! Come on, we were friends. We had the kind of relationship where we could say anything to each other--anything. And on this, you--you--you keep quiet?
Carly: I'm sorry. No. I told you I didn't want to ruin anybody's happiness. And with Lawrence being so viciously angry all the time--
Daniel: Shh! Shh! Okay. Okay, fine. Yeah. Oh, my God. You know, I basically blocked out our making love that night. And I didn't want-- you know, I didn't want it to get in the way of our friendship. I didn't remember it too clearly anyway. But it was a friendship that I counted on. That I thought was a very good, very trusting friendship. It's just--
Carly: Daniel, it was.
Daniel: Really. 'Cause I assumed we could've said anything to each other. We had always been honest with each other. And now this time--I mean, all this time. Even when you sent the card-- when Rebecca died, you didn't say one word. Not one word.
Carly: I couldn’t. Lawrence was watching. Don't you understand?
Daniel: Well, you couldn't even hint that you'd had my baby and then you gave it away--
Daniel: You gave it away?
Carly: No! Never! Do you under--
Carly: Okay. You're right. You're right. You're right. I could've told you early on. But later, it would've been signing your death warrant because, I swear to you, Lawrence would've tracked you down and he would've had you killed. Trust me. That's something his family knows how to do all too well.
Melanie: You have to kill me, right? 'Cause of your nephew?
Vivian: Oh, God. You understand, don't you?
Melanie: You must've loved him so much.
Vivian: He was my life. She took him from me. She has to lose the way I lost. And if there were another way... Oh, God. Oh, God. You are such a sweet... sweet... cheerful girl. Melanie... Melanie...
Melanie: I've decided... that I-I don't really know anything anymore. So if you kill me... everything will be better. And that's good, right?
EJ: Perfect. Yeah, that's perfect.
Anna: Well, you can't be sure, EJ. I think we need to take more time. Make sure there are no traces of anything.
EJ: No. No, no. That is exactly what I need to break up Samantha and Rafe. That is exactly what we need to do.
Hope: Hey, Gus. How's it going?
Gus: What? Why is she here?
Hope: She just finished giving her statement to the district attorney's office about how you tried to kill me. You see, Gus, you got a little problem here. I saw you in that basement. I know everything you did.
Gus: No. Impossible.
Bo: Impossible. Hmm. Well, you better think very carefully on what you say next. 'Cause if you don't give us Vivian, you're the one that's going to prison.
Daniel: Come on, Carly. It's like you're spinning some kind of story here. All right, first of all-- first of all, you were pregnant and--and Lawrence didn't even notice?
Carly: Course he did. Course he did. He was livid. His illness left him sterile so he knew right away. Daniel, he beat me trying to get me to tell him who the father was. And if it weren't for the fact that we were still raising our son together, I'm sure it would've turned out much worse for me. And you--oh, my God--thank God you were marrying Rebecca because when he had you investigated, you were taken off the list almost immediately.
Daniel: Okay, so--so you covered for me. But you gave our baby away.
Carly: It wasn't my choice! I had no choice! It was the most painful moment in my life giving up my little girl--our little girl!
Daniel: Okay. Okay. You--you--you've been in Salem since the fall. Rebecca was dead. Lawrence was dead. But still you didn't tell me.
Carly: Because of Vivian. Do you--I was so afraid that she would kill you, or Melanie, or both of you. Dear God, Daniel, she still could.
Vivian: So you're prepared to die.
Melanie: I wish someone loved me the way you loved your nephew.
Vivian: He was my jewel.
Melanie: Everything in my life is so wrong. It's always been so wrong. My father... the man I thought was my father... he was a big gambler. And when he'd gamble too big and couldn't pay the man back, I would have to go see the man.
Vivian: Oh, my God.
Melanie: [Crying] I used to lie and then trick and steal. He taught me how to do that. And even after he died, I still thought that that was how you were supposed to live your life.
Vivian: Oh, god.
Melanie: Then I got married. That was all wrong too because... I still... and then Carly came. And this is your fault, Carly! This is all your fault!
Vivian: Shh. Calm down.
Melanie: I was your daughter and you threw me away!
Vivian: Calm down. Calm down.
Melanie: She won't even tell me who my father is.
Vivian: She's impossible. Shh.
Melanie: So the way I see it, if I have to die... then today's a good day to do it.
Vivian: Melanie. Melanie. Melanie.
Stefano: Oh, Elvis, I need to speak with you.
EJ: Not now, father. Thank you. I'm just collecting my son and leaving.
Kate: Oh, I'll get him for you.
EJ: That's very kind of you, Kate. Thank you. He needs a warm winter coat.
EJ: Thank you.
Stefano: I understand there's some kind of gathering for Sydney.
EJ: Well, if you're wondering if you're invited or not...
Stefano: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, I know, okay. Look, I just want to warn you about Hernandez.
Sami: You okay?
Rafe: I'm fine.
Sami: Thanks for helping me set this up.
Rafe: Yeah, of course. It's my pleasure. I think you're right. It's the right thing to do.
Sami: Okay. So now you can tell me what happened with EJ.
Rafe: [Scoffs] Sami, I'm fine.
Sami: Hey, hey, tell me.
Rafe: No, it's just, you know... I don't get why that bastard gets to pick the location. And then, I mean, really? The pier?
Sami: You think he did it because that's where the... ransom drop went bad?
Rafe: Course he did. Course, he's just--he's trying to rub my nose in it.
Sami: All right, well, you can't let him bother you, okay? I don't care what he thinks. You shouldn't care what he thinks. You did everything you could.
Rafe: Yeah. Just wasn't enough.
Hope: So how long do you think you'll last in prison? A day? A minute?
Bo: Where was Vivian the last time you saw her?
Gus: She was--she said she was going home to get her gloves so sh-- I don't have anything to say.
Bo: So she what, Gus? What was Vivian gonna do?
Gus: I want a lawyer.
Bo: Vivian goes all the way home to get a pair of gloves.
Hope: Because her hands are cold?
Bo: I don't think so. She's up to something and soon.
Hope: Yeah, like right now.
Bo: Hey, it's Brady. You still at Melanie Kiriakis' door?
Jenkins: Yes, sir.
Bo: And you've been there since I left you.
Jenkins: Yes, sir. Except one time I had to help Mrs. Horton. She got real dizzy, so I walked her down the hall to an exam room.
Bo: Let's go.
Vivian: [Exhales] Enough. Enough suffering for one short life. One little life. One little life.
Daniel: I don't--I don't even know what to say. No, I really don’t.
Carly: I'm so sorry.
Daniel: So am I. Look, you don't ever have to worry about Melanie again 'cause I am not gonna let Vivian hurt her or you. I got to go.
Carly: Please wait. Just wait just one more second, okay? I know this is overwhelming. But please--please know that I wanted to tell you the truth. Please know that I always felt you deserved to know you had a child.
Daniel: Yeah? What's the point? Hmm?
Carly: I--I want to-- you've always been so special to me. Other than Bo, you're my only friend. Our daughter hates me and probably always will. I guess what I'm asking is do you hate me too? Or do you think there's a way that you can forgive me?
EJ: So now--now you give me warnings, is that right?
Stefano: Hernandez was here earlier.
EJ: You know, I'm not interested. Have you not heard a word I've said these last few months? I don't care for any of your advice or your protestations about how much you love my family. We're having a gathering to mourn Sydney and you're not welcome. I would rather have Hernandez or Philip Kiriakis--the man who murdered your son, my brother-- standing beside me than you. Because you--you're dead to me. You hear me? You're dead to me. Hey.
Kate: There's daddy.
EJ: How you doing, big fella? Come here. Okay. Whoa. Big jump. You and I have nothing more to say.
Daniel: I can't even answer that right now 'cause I don't even know you.
Carly: You do. I'm the same friend I've always been, I swear.
Daniel: No. No, nothing is the same. Excuse me. I got to go check on my daughter.
Philip: Don't give me that crap!
Philip: You were in here for a reason. What did you do? What did you do?
Vivian: Philip, I was just wanting to see how she was doing.
Bo: Take it easy, Philip.
Hope: We've got it now, Philip.
Vivian: I didn't do anything!
Hope: Yeah, no, of course you didn’t. You never do anything.
Philip: How is she?
Doctor: Serious, but stable. Not much change, really. Vital signs identical to 30 minutes ago.
Doctor: Don't tire her out. Let her get her rest.
Philip: Melanie. Hey, baby. You okay? It's Philip.
Melanie: Hi, Philip.
Bo: Melanie, did Vivian hurt you?
Melanie: Vivian? I had a dream about Vivian. I think it was Vivian. I don't really care. I just want to go back to sleep.
Vivian: [Exhales] May I go now?
Bo: Yeah, you may. Don't ever come in this room again, you understand?
Vivian: If I were you, Commissioner, I would address that to the woman that you're in love with, Dr. Carly Manning. After all, she is the woman who tried to kill the child. Philip, I know you're upset, but I wish the best for Melanie. She's a wonderful girl. She's gonna make you a beautiful bride.
Bo: Daniel, if you had been doing your damn job, this wouldn't have happened. Stand at this door. Don't move.
Jenkins: I'm sorry.
Hope: Good thing you went with your instincts and called.
Bo: Still... too close to suit me.
Hope: Still the best I know.
[Cell phone rings]
Carly: Hi. Listen. Um, I-I really could stand to talk to you. I'm at the pub. Can you break free?
Bo: Yeah, um, just give me a few minutes.
Sami: [Sighs] I just don't know what's taking EJ so long.
Rafe: Who knows. Maybe he wants to make a grand entrance.
EJ: Sorry. I'm sorry. Sorry. Okay. There was, um, a lot of traffic on the way here.
Sami: It's okay. You're here now. We can start. Hi, Johnny. Come on. Grab a seat next to your sister--
EJ: Samantha, actually, um, look, I'm--I'm sorry, but we-- we can't start now.
Bo: You all right?
Carly: I just really need to see you.
Bo: Okay, um, see you soon.
Bo: Yeah, I, you know, I got to fill her in on what happened here. Be easier face-to-face.
Hope: Yeah. Of course.
Bo: I'll see you.
Lawrence: Aunt Vivian. How could you do this to me?
Vivian: Lawrence, I--
Lawrence: I was the light of your life. You promised to kill Carly’s daughter so she would know the pain you went through when she killed me!
Carly: I know. And I wanted to do it in the worst way, but I just couldn’t.
Lawrence: Then why didn't you? My God, you had the chance!
Vivian: I know I did. But I-I had this realization. It was like the first time I-- the sins of the mother-- you know the rest. I--she's an innocent girl. I had to accept that and so do you.
Vivian: Lawrence, please.
Lawrence: No. You have to go back to the hospital and finish the job!
Vivian: Lawrence... good-bye. Good-bye.
[Tapping chess piece on table]
Kate: You were going to warn EJ about Rafe’s questions, weren't you?
Stefano: I was.
Kate: But you didn’t.
Stefano: And I won’t.
Stefano: Never. My son has spit in my face for the last time. So if Senor Hernandez thinks that he has found something, well, then fine, let Mr. FBI take Elvis down. It'll serve him right.
EJ: Rafe, would you, uh, would you take the kids back to the car, please?
EJ: It's, uh, cold. I don't want them waiting out here and I need to talk to Samantha alone.
Rafe: EJ, you do realize whatever you tell me, Sami’s just gonna tell me anyway.
Sami: What do you want to talk to me about?
EJ: It's private.
Sami: All right, fine. Let's just--let's just do it so we can get it over with.
Rafe: Okay. Come on, guys.
Sami: Kids, I'll see you in a second, okay? Will and Rafe are going to take you out to the car.
Rafe: Come on, my man. Okay. And we'll be right back.
Sami: Okay, what?
EJ: Look, um, sorry if I snapped at you.
Sami: Yeah. What is going on with you?
EJ: [Exhales] Samantha, I'm just--I don't know if I'm ready for this family gathering. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have agreed to it.
Sami: Well, you know what, EJ, it's not about us. It's about the children and doing what's best for them. They're confused and they need answers. And we have to do it.
EJ: No, I understand that. I just, uh, I-I think it can wait.
Sami: It can't-- when Rafe called you, you said you were agreeing to it. You--you talked about it a couple days--I mean, come on. EJ, we have to do this.
EJ: Sorry, Samantha. I'm gonna go and get Johnny from the car.
Sami: What? The hell you are! You're gonna tell me the truth. You're gonna tell me what's going on right now.
Vivian: What was I doing?
Victor: What were you doing tonight, Vivian?
Victor: Trying to set a record for the longest walk ever taken by a senior citizen?
Victor: Just kidding.
Vivian: Yeah, I know.
Victor: You were gone an awful long time.
Vivian: Was I? Well, yeah, I was, I guess.
Victor: How was it?
Vivian: Oh, it was refreshing, enlightening.
Vivian: Yes, well, you see, Victor, I had a subtle realization tonight. And, uh, I hate to change plans midstream, but I absolutely have to.
Victor: We are talking about Melanie.
Vivian: Yes, we are. And you're right. She is an innocent child. And though it would've been nice payback for Carly to have lost her daughter, Philip would've suffered too much.
Victor: Say nothing of Melanie.
Vivian: Mm. I agree. And that's why, luckily, I didn't succeed.
Victor: Very lucky.
Vivian: But, uh, I mean, there's still good news about Carly.
Victor: Yes, she'll be going to prison for a long, long time.
Vivian: And, uh, she'll be haunted by the fact that her daughter hates her.
Bo: Hey, hey.
Carly: Hey, thank God.
Bo: Oh, oh, take it easy. It's okay. It's all right. You talked to Daniel.
Carly: He's so angry. I can't blame him. But he doesn't--he doesn't understand why I kept it a secret. Neither does Melanie. They think I'm just this awful, devious person who screwed with their lives like I set out to do it on purpose.
Bo: No, no, no, hey, they just found out. Give them some time.
Carly: Bo, it's not gonna change the way they see it. All I wanted to do was to protect them, and I swear to you I think I've lost them forever.
Bo: No. No, no. Come on. No.
Sami: Tell me the truth, EJ. Tell me now.
EJ: It's nothing, all right? Look, I just don't want to do this right now.
Sami: Why? Why not? What is wrong--?
EJ: [Whispers] Keep your voice down, please.
Sami: [Whispers] EJ, what is it?
EJ: I-I got another letter. A ransom note, Samantha. I think Sydney’s alive.
Daniel: Can I say something to you?
Rafe: The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that EJ is up to something.
Sami: He deserves to know the truth.
