Kate: Hmm. Well, I guess I could see Melanie in that.
Vivian: Although you'd probably rather see her in a coffin. Tell me, Kate, do you plan to let this daughter-in-law live?
Kate: No one asked you to sit down.
Vivian: Poor Kate, looking through magazines, imagining herself at a wedding she won't see. You know, I think of my son as almost perfect. But Philip doesn't forgive so easily, especially since you have--
Kate: Don't you ever refer to him as your son ever again.
Nurse Maxine: Oh, honey... just what do you think you're doing here?
Nathan: My shift.
Nurse Maxine: Dr. Knapp took that shift. No one expects you to come from your grandfather's funeral to work.
Nathan: Dr. Knapp? I didn't ask him to take my shift.
Stephanie: No, I did.
Philip: So I had a favor to ask you.
Bo: Fire away.
Philip: I want you to be in the wedding when I marry Melanie.
Melanie: [Humming] Where's Dr. Jonas?
Carly: Uh, he asked me to cover for him. Said it was a matter involving a student nurse. I take it you are said nurse?
Melanie: It's always funny when you think you're gonna talk to somebody you like, and then it turns out to be someone completely different.
Carly: Uh, if you want to take a leave of absence and rejoin the program, there are forms you have to fill out.
Melanie: There always are, aren't there?
Carly: My daughter hates me. Melanie hates me.
Melanie: Why are you staring at me like that?
Vivian: Lucky that little twit didn't break the skin. I'd have to get a rabies shot.
Gus: So my contact in Switzerland's been working on it, but so far he can't be more specific about the birth date.
Vivian: Damn, then all we know is that Carly had a daughter.
Gus: That's correct, Madame.
Vivian: And all the evidence points toward that little limp dishrag Myra.
Vivian: Oh, whatever. I strongly feel that since I'm going to destroy whatever she's spawned, I better be sure. After all... God is in the details.
Philip: Come on, Bo, Lucas is gonna be the best man. There won't be any pressure. You won't even have to take care of the rings or anything.
Bo: No, it's not that. For a great marriage these days.
Philip: But you are my brother.
Bo: Yeah, but--
Philip: Just let me make my pitch, okay?
Bo: All right, pitch away.
Philip: Okay, Melanie has Max, and that's it. And she didn't exactly grow up in the little house on the prairie, and she's never really been made to feel welcome many places. So I'm thinking when she walks down that aisle, I want her to see my brothers welcoming her into our family.
Bo: Nicely done. Only a jerk would turn you down after that.
Philip: Thank you. I liked it.
Bo: Yeah, so when's the wedding?
Philip: I'm not sure. Sometime in February. We want to wait till Maggie can be a part of it.
Philip: Maggie's as close to a mother as Melanie's ever had.
Melanie: It's just a little weird being stared at by a murderess.
Carly: Uh... that's a good strategy. You know you need a favor, and you want to alienate the one person who can give it to you.
Melanie: Point taken. Where do we begin? Ah, my birthday... an altogether memorable day.
Carly: [Pained groans]
Nurse: Did you decide yet?
Carly: God! Oh, God!
Nurse: We could give you the epidural right away, Carly.
Lawrence: No, no, we're going to take a pass on the painkiller.
Nurse: But shouldn't your wife have a say?
Carly: [Groaning] Thank you. I'd really rather get through this without-- Oh! Aah!
Lawrence: Oh, Carly, that's not why I did it, because you want to try to get through it-- because you want to impress us all with your bravery. I just like hearing you scream.
Carly: Aah! Oh, God! Oh! Oh! [Pained cries continue]
Melanie: Dr. Manning? Are you okay?
Maggie: [Exhales sharply]
Melissa: What can I get you?
Maggie: Oh, nothing. It's just so good to be home again.
Melissa: You know what got to me the most at the service-- I mean the lunch?
Maggie: What, honey?
Melissa: [Sighs] Just all the laughter... all the people and the different stories. The one thing that they all remembered the most... they said he always had a joke and a smile for everyone. [Sniffles] I was so lucky... to have him as a dad.
Maggie: Do you know every time you called and he hung up, he'd say, "our g-- our girl... that girl of ours"? He loved you so much. Uh, you know, maybe you could, uh, get me a cup of tea. Would you mind?
Melissa: I would be happy to.
Maggie: Okay. [Sniffles] [Crying softly]
Stephanie: I just thought you'd need time today. I didn't mean to butt in.
Nathan: Oh, no, no, no. Come on, you're looking out for me. I'm just-- I don't know, I guess I'm like my granddad. You have feelings you don't want to have, work--go to work.
Stephanie: I understand.
Nathan: I don't want you to think I'm not grateful, though, 'cause I am.
Stephanie: Well, I-- I will be around today. I have paperwork to do, so if you want to get coffee, just let me know.
Nathan: Great. It's been really nice having you around.
Stephanie: Before you go back to work, I-I have a surprise for you.
Nathan: Yeah, what's that?
Stephanie: Follow me.
Philip: So you and Hope...
Philip: It's really over? That's kind of hard to believe.
Bo: Yeah, well, our marriage gives every indication of being dead in the water.
Philip: I'm sorry.
Bo: Me too.
Philip: Hope said you're with Carly now.
Bo: She put it that way?
Philip: So it's true. Look, man... you know, I want you to be happy. I do. But you have to know I cannot invite Carly to the wedding.
Melanie: You're doing it again.
Melanie: Staring at me with this weird look on your face.
Carly: I'm sorry. It's just that you reminded me of something, that's all.
Melanie: Well, that's great. I really am super excited to remind a murderer of something. Look, this is--this is not a good idea.
Carly: Just don't go, please.
Melanie: No, it's fine. I, uh--I remembered that I have to do something-- um, stay away from the crazy lady, so...
Carly: Oh, you think I could ever hurt you? [Pained gasps] I-I thought you were gonna forgive me.
Lawrence: Well, I wanted to. Didn't happen. Watching another man's baby taking over your body... you know, sometimes when you weren't watching, I'd see you touch your stomach and smile, and I vowed that I would wipe that smile off of your face forever! It's all right, darling. I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere.
Carly: No. Ow, ow, ow! Oh, stop.
Lawrence: Remember your breathing.
Carly: Ow! Ow! Stop!
Kate: Ah, Melanie, there you are.
Melanie: Kate, hi.
Kate: I was hoping you could spare me a little time.
Melanie: I'm really busy right now.
Kate: Just a cup of coffee. I've been going through some wedding magazines. I have some great ideas.
Melanie: Yeah, really, really busy.
Kate: I've been snubbed by Smurfette.
Nurse Maxine: I get that same look on my face after I've had a talk with Melanie.
Kate: Yeah, she has quite a strong personality for such a young person.
Nurse Maxine: Mm, that's a nice way to put it.
Kate: Hmm. You know, I'm just trying to find a way to get through to her.
Nurse Maxine: There's only one person I know that's been able to do that... Maggie Horton.
Philip: Look, I'm not passing judgment, okay? I just... I want this wedding to be about Melanie, not family drama.
Bo: No. Yeah, I understand that. Uh, but after what happened at Maggie's, I don't think you have to be concerned about Carly showing up at your wedding.
Philip: Yeah, man, it was pretty awful. I have never seen Hope like that.
Bo: Yeah, well... she... found out about my indiscretion at the worst possible time in the worst possible way. I feel terrible about that.
Philip: Also, bro, I... I don't mean to stir things up, but Melanie and Carly--they just don't seem to get along that well.
Bo: I noticed that. So, um... you know, I really don't think you have to worry about Carly popping up at any family functions anytime soon.
Philip: That doesn't bother you? I mean, if you guys are getting serious or become serious... sorry, none of my business.
Bo: No, no, it's okay. If you're asking if Carly and I are serious... and you're absolutely sure he never said anything to Vivian about her?
Carly: Yeah. He was mortified by what I did to him. He--he didn't want to talk to anybody about it, much less Vivian. So, you know, I think that if I can keep this locked up tight, Vivian will never know.
Bo: Yeah, it's serious with us. Um... I'm basically the reason she came back to Salem.
Philip: Hmm. I thought it was because she was running away... after she killed Lawrence.
Bo: Yeah, well, I'm the reason she ran here. The relationship we had, uh, was interrupted. It--it never ended. So, uh... we've been in love for a long time. We still are.
Nurse: We're almost there, Carly.
Lawrence: You're doing great, Carly.
Carly: [Pained cries]
Lawrence: You're a natural mother.
Carly: Please, oh, God!
Lawrence: Breathe, darling, breathe!
Carly: I can't! I can't!
Lawrence: Do it for me. Do it for our little baby.
Carly: Our baby. Our baby.
Lawrence: Yes, I've been a fool. I see that now. Focus, Carly, so we can start our life together all over.
Carly: Lawrence-- [Screaming]
Lawrence: Carly, it's a girl. We have a beautiful little baby girl.
Nathan: Okay. All right, Steph, coffee at the pub doesn't really constitute as a surprise. I mean, I don't want to sound ungrateful, but... I mean, it's actually a daily occurrence for me.
Stephanie: Coffee's not the surprise.
Stephanie: This is.
Nathan: What'd you do? Oh, my God. I don't believe this.
Maggie: Now, you call me when you get there, so I don't worry, okay?
Melissa: Okay. I love you.
Maggie: I love you too.
Melissa: So much. You promise.
Maggie: Okay, I'll call you.
Melissa: Call me.
Maggie: Yes. Watch out for her, Mickey, okay?
[Knock on door]
Maggie: [Gasps] Oh, honey, did you forget something?
Philip: I don't know, Bo. I'm sorry, I don't buy it.
Bo: What's not to buy? Carly and I love each other.
Philip: What about your marriage? What about Hope? Look, you're still wearing your wedding ring.
Bo: Our marriage is over. And, um... I would appreciate it if you kept all this stuff about me and Carly to yourself.
Philip: [Scoffs] It seems like a lot of people already know.
Bo: [Chuckles] Right. I'm talking about how long it's been going on. You know, if Hope heard... she's been through enough already.
Philip: I agree with you on that.
Bo: Yeah, so... great. You'll keep it under your hat. Um, I got to get out of here. Tell Melanie congratulations for me.
Vivian: Philip. Bo. Are you here to see Hope? Is this the beginning of a detente? Will love triumph?
Bo: Do you ever exercise your right to remain silent?
Philip: Hey, take care, man.
Vivian: You know, Bo is your brother, but I think he has a very sour approach on life.
Philip: He's just got a lot on his plate right now.
Vivian: Well, having an affair with Carly would make anyone sour. Name any happy person. And also... if you're asking someone to keep quiet about an affair, wouldn't you keep your voice down?
Philip: You were listening in?
Vivian: Philip, isn't this Salem? Is this not the Kiriakis mansion? Am I not Vivian Alamain? Of course I was listening. So Carly came to Salem to see Bo.
Philip: Okay, if you were listening in, you also heard him say this will hurt Hope if she finds out.
Vivian: Poor Hope. Talk about collateral damage.
Carly: Lawrence... let me hold her.
Lawrence: Oh, don't spoil my fun. I'm just getting to know her.
Carly: It's just that I just got to hold her for a second.
Lawrence: Did I tell you about my morning? I-I didn't think too much of it at the time, but I was having my coffee. And one second the cup was in my hand, the next... on the floor, smashed to pieces.
Lawrence: Like I said, I didn't think too much about it until later. I was on the phone-- dropped it. It just fell to the floor. I-I think maybe the emotions of this day have made me clumsy.
Carly: Give her to me.
Lawrence: I have to ask myself... what do I drop next?
Kate: So it just struck me that I had to know how you were doing. And I'm glad that I did. It must have been difficult for you to say good-bye to Melissa.
Maggie: Yeah, it wasn't easy.
Kate: Well, I told myself that I was just going to drive right by if there weren't any cars here. But actually, I don't think that you should be alone tonight, Maggie.
Maggie: I'm fine, Kate.
Kate: Kind of surprised that--that Melanie's not here.
Maggie: Why would you say that?
Kate: Well, I was just talking to someone who--who she works with at the hospital, and they were telling me how the-- how close the two of you have gotten.
Maggie: Yes, we are, but she has her own life. Do you want some tea or something?
Kate: No. Actually, I should be asking you that. I mean, I'm here to take care of you.
Maggie: Whether I want it or not?
Kate: [Laughs] Tea! Imagine having to deal with something like this with nothing stronger than tea.
Maggie: Uh, I'm actually a little tired.
Kate: You know, Mickey was a lovely, lovely man. He was fair... tolerant. I can't imagine another man allowing you to fill up your house with all of your strays.
Maggie: He liked a full house... liked kids.
Kate: Hmm. Even kids like Melanie? I mean, I ad--I adore her now. I mean, I really do. I am so thrilled with Philip and--and all of that, but she was a real handful when she first came to town, wasn't she?
Maggie: She had a lot to deal with.
Kate: Yeah, well, thank God for you and Mickey. I mean, I don't know how you did it, but you got through her defenses, and, well, you got through to the real Melanie.
Maggie: Would you like to take notes?
Kate: Excuse me?
Maggie: That's why you're here, right? You're not really here... because you care the Mickey died. You're here because you want to know how to fool that poor girl into thinking you're human.
Kate: Oh, Maggie--
Maggie: Oh, no, no, no, no. Wait a minute. Hmm, I get it. You're in competition with Vivian, and you're trying to get Melanie out of her camp and into yours. [Sighs] But you know what? You have a few strikes against you, Kate. You tried to poison your previous daughter-in-law, and you married the man who tried to kill your beloved Philip, but mainly... Melanie. She's a very smart young woman, and she can see through you.
Vivian: So if Carly came to Salem to see Bo, maybe the daughter has nothing to do with this.
Philip: Hmm, you know what they say about people who talk to themselves.
Vivian: Philip, you and Bo are very close, aren't you?
Philip: Yeah, I guess.
Vivian: So does he usually open up to you like that about his tacky, tawdry, disgusting, nauseating--
Philip: Get to the noun, Vivian.
Vivian: He was telling you about his affair with Carly. Does he always open up like that?
Philip: Okay, let's get something straight. I want you to listen to me very carefully. I think we-- and by "we" I mean "you"-- should just forget about what Bo said.
Philip: As we've established, the walls in this house have ears. And I don't want Hope getting hurt any more than she already has been.
Vivian: You wound me, my darling. I am the soul of discretion.
Philip: Everyone says so.
Vivian: And I would never do anything to hurt Hope.
Philip: Unless it hurt Carly more.
Abe: You did what?
Bo: You heard me.
Abe: I can't have heard you correctly... because I thought you said that you purposely led Vivian to believe that Carly came back to Salem for you.
Bo: Yeah, I did.
Abe: What the hell were you thinking?
Bo: I'm trying to throw Vivian off the track.
Abe: But what do you think that Vivian, who lives out there where the buses don't run, is gonna do with this misinformation? Who do you think is gonna get slammed in the face with this?
Abe: You think about her at all... or just Carly?
Carly: Lawrence, you're scaring me.
Carly: Oh, God!
Lawrence: Oh, sorry. You were saying?
Carly: She's just a baby. You--you wouldn't hurt her.
Lawrence: Yes, but that's the problem, isn't it? She's not just a baby.
Lawrence: She's the living, breathing personification of your betrayal... the constant reminder that your mommy, my wife, is a whore.
Carly: Take it out on me, not her, okay?
Lawrence: But I love you. Oh, Carly, you and this little consequence have put me in a terrible position. All I want from life is to live happily with you. But she makes that impossible. But there is one simple, very permanent solution.
Carly: No. No. No. Listen, I'll stay with you.
Lawrence: Oh, that's a given, Carly.
Carly: And I'll give her away.
Lawrence: And never see her again?
Carly: I'll never see her again.
Lawrence: I think we're making some real progress here.
Nathan: Wow. The Tom Horton award for intern of the year.
Stephanie: I am so proud of you.
Nathan: You don't think that they gave this to me because of Mickey dying, do you? You don't think that they felt sorry for me?
Stephanie: No. No, definitely not, because the vote was over a week ago.
Nathan: Oh. [Both chuckle] You know who would have got a good kick out of this? Grandpa Mickey.
Stephanie: Nathan... he did. I showed it to him.
Kate: I can't believe that you think that's the only reason I came here tonight.
Maggie: Why, because you poison people and you manufacture evidence against innocent men? And yet you'd stop at pumping me for information about Melanie?
Kate: [Chuckles] I think you're overreacting. I'm curious about Melanie. Yes, I am. She's going to marry my son.
Maggie: And you're looking for any way, some way to get back to Philip. Okay, I'll tell you a little bit about Melanie. She's very young. She's alone in the world. And you'll probably think she's an easy target. But you know what? She has me in her corner. Now, I'm gonna be watching you like a hawk. So you leave her and her fiancÚ alone, or you're gonna have me to deal with. And it's gonna be the me without Mickey to calm me down... to stop me from getting down to your level, the me that's kind of itching for a fight, you know?
Kate: Gee, Maggie, I never intended to upset you.
Maggie: Oh, you didn't upset me. You ticked me off. Now get out of my house!
Kate: Ah, so I guess we'll just pretend that this never happened?
Maggie: Not a chance. That felt good.
Abe: Your life is a mess.
Bo: [Laughs] I actually knew that.
Abe: And behind it all is Carly, right?
Bo: Because Vivian is harassing her.
Abe: And letting Vivian think that Carly came here to see you, it solves...? Wait a minute, wait a minute. You said that you wanted to get Vivian off the trail. Of what? When Carly came back here, she had assassins after her. And Vivian pulled them off, because... because there's something bigger out there. Right?
Bo: Right. Carly's got a secret.
Abe: And you know what that secret is, don't you?
Carly: You--you came back.
Melanie: Don't get excited. I just forgot my jacket.
Carly: Yeah, I was just worried, um... that you were gonna drop out of this program because of me.
Melanie: That's kind of egotistical, don't you think? I mean, you don't-- you don't matter to me.
Carly: You know, I was going through your file earlier, and-- and you're a real asset to this hospital.
Melanie: My file is filled with reprimands.
Carly: Look, this is your future we're talking about.
Melanie: No, my future is being Mrs. Kiriakis. And, yeah, I'm changing my last name, because mine doesn't really mean that much to me.
Carly: Just because you get married doesn't mean you can't have a career.
Melanie: Oh, marital advice from the husband killer. That's great. Look, lady, not that this is really any of your business, but my career is going to be a full-time mom. Turns out I am an old-fashioned kind of girl.
Carly: Children? Children--children are good. But you're young. I mean, you have all this time. You could wait.
Melanie: Philip and I don't want to wait. We don't want to wait. We have daydreams of being great parents with--with happy kids. And given how Philip and I grew up, it's not really that hard to understand.
Carly: What do you mean how you grew up? You had a family, didn't you?
Melanie: I didn't say that I had a family. I had a daddy. You really would have loved him. One of the best-read, well-spoken pimps you would ever hope to meet.
Melanie: Yeah, he specialized in the clients who liked them young and inexperienced.
Melanie: No, it's fine. Daddy took care of me. I mean, he only pimped me out when his bookies were coming after him with a baseball bat to the kneecaps. But unfortunately for me, Daddy wasn't a good gambler.
Carly: I'm so sorry.
Melanie: It worked out. He was murdered. It's like getting out of prison. Both of my parents are dead... best thing that could ever happen to me.
Stephanie: You know, it was strange, because I was working on the press release, and I remembered Maggie saying they were going on a cruise, so I wanted to show your grandfather before they left.
Nathan: What did he say when he saw it?
Stephanie: The truth? He said, "Make sure that kid doesn't get a swelled head." And then he turned the other way so I couldn't see the tears in his eyes.
Nathan: I don't think I'm ever gonna stop missing him.
Vivian: I think you could be on the wrong track.
Gus: But we have proof, Madame, that Dr. Manning did have a child.
Vivian: I-I'm not saying Carly doesn't have a child somewhere out there. She might not even be in Salem. But Carly may have come here just to be with her soul mate. She may have killed Lawrence just to be with Bo.
Abe: You know, I can see that you not only know what the secret is, but you're not gonna tell me.
Abe: And you couldn't tell Hope either, could you?
Bo: No, I couldn't.
Abe: Oh, well, that's great. You two need further complications.
Bo: Hey, hope and I were having problems before Carly showed up. Remember, Hope had moved out of the house.
Abe: You know, all I'm saying is that you'd have a lot better chance of working things out if Carly hadn't come running to you.
Bo: She had her reasons.
Abe: And she wants to make you part and parcel of the whole thing. Bo, be honest. Your life would be a hell of a lot simpler if Dr. Manning had never come back.
Carly: You're glad your mother's dead? Did you even know her?
Melanie: No. I know what she was like, though.
Melanie: It's not hard to figure out. If she was hanging around with men like my father, she must have been a real piece of work.
Carly: Maybe--maybe she didn't know what kind of man he really was.
Melanie: Are you defending her?
Carly: I'm just saying that I'm certain that your mother loved you very much.
Melanie: That's a little arrogant, don't you think? Telling me about my life when you don't know anything at all? This conversation is over. I don't need your sentimental crap. I was raised knowing you can't trust anyone or anything, and it has only made me stronger. So please, please just stay out of my life.
Carly: Oh, God, what have I done to you? What have I done?
Nathan: Hey, Steph... um, everything you've done for me--I really appreciate it.
Stephanie: I just gave your grandfather some good news. It was fun.
Nathan: No, you did a lot more than that. You really got me through this. And I... I don't know how to express to you how thankful I am for that. Thank you.
Bo: As I said, Hope had moved out of the house with our daughter, not telling me where they were for how long? So, yeah, I had a bit of spare time and decided to help Carly.
Abe: Because everyone, including Carly, knows how often you turn your back on a woman in trouble.
Bo: Yeah, well... Hope's in trouble.
Bo: It's... the way she found out about me and Carly. And if Vivian tells her what I said, it's...
Abe: Look, what if you went and told her the truth, that you were playing Vivian?
Bo: I can't do that.
Abe: You don't trust her to keep it quiet?
Bo: You know what? I have trusted her, and Victor ended up-- look, they all live in the same house. If Vivian finds out I was lying, she'll know I was trying to throw her off the scent.
Bo: It will infuriate her. You know her. She's a dangerous, unstable person. It'll make things that much more dangerous for Carly.
Abe: So what are you gonna do?
Bo: The only thing I can do. Wait till this whole thing is over and then tell Hope the truth.
Abe: [Chuckles] You think this is all going to have a happy ending?
Bo: I'm trying to make that happen, yeah, but... no, I wouldn't bet on it.
Melanie: Is she gone?
Philip: Yeah. Yeah. Hey, what's wrong?
Melanie: I just wanted to be alone with you.
Philip: Did something happen?
Melanie: I was just talking to Carly Manning. She gets on my nerves.
Philip: Well, I mean, after what happened at Maggie's, I get that.
Melanie: Yeah, but I get on her nerves too. She tries to cover it up, but I can see it's there.
Philip: Who cares what she thinks?
Melanie: Right. I don't care what she thinks. Why'd I tell her that stuff, then?
Philip: W-what stuff?
Melanie: Family stuff. The stuff I can't-- the stuff I can't talk about. Why did I tell it to her?
Philip: [Sighs] Come here.
Lawrence: Look what I made you do to her. I won, Carly. [Laughing] I won! [Laughing] [Laughter echoing]
Vivian: Carly's secret won't be a secret for long.
Carly: Are you out of your mind?
Rafe: They might have found Sydney's kidnapper.
