E.J.: So this envelope. You haven't seen this before?
Harold: Afraid not, sir. In fact, it's the first time I've seen it.
EJ: All right.
Harold: Would you like me to contact the post office, sir?
EJ: No, it won't be necessary, thank you. [Sighs]
Anna: That's right, beautiful. Your auntie is going to be filthy rich. It's only a matter of time. [Laughs]
Nathan: Come on, Melanie, really? Oh, you don't think you're rushing things with Philip just a little?
Nathan: What--you know, what is the rush to get married? It's not like your biological clock is ticking.
Melanie: How could you even-- okay, look, how about--how about you keep your heartwarming opinions to yourself, okay?
[Knock on door]
Philip: There she is.
Philip: Hey, Nathan, you here to congratulate us?
Carly: I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
Bo: No, no, don't be.
Carly: There were just all those horrible, panicky feelings that I had right before I killed Lawrence. They're coming back. It's just the same.
Bo: No, no, listen to me. It's not the same. You had to protect your daughter on your own. You had no one there to help you. Now it's different. You have me.
Brady: So, uh, Chloe, what did you want? Why did you want to see me?
Chloe: Well, Brady, these last few months, you've done so much for me and Daniel that we though that we could at least try to help you for a change.
Brady: What are you talking about?
Chloe: Well, Victor said a crazy thing. He said that Arianna is a drug dealer. He just told Daniel point blank. Maybe it's not so crazy?
Arianna: I was just gonna call you. Is there a break in the Sydney case or what?
Rafe: Yes, possibly a huge one.
Sami: What are you reading?
Vivian: Yes, Victor, that is the million-dollar question. Who is the father of Carly's bastard love child?
Victor: And where is that child now?
Vivian: I'm going to find out the answers to those questions, but it's going to take a huge investment of time and effort. But when we find out who that child is, we're going-- I know that look. Something's bothering you. You think that Carly's illegitimate offspring is going to be another heir to the Kiriakis fortune, and maybe it's Bo's child.
Hope: I came by to pick up some Christmas gifts that Ciara left behind.
Hope: Carly. Happy holidays. Keeping busy, I see.
Nathan: Actually, I came to drop something off, and I had to get my coffee fix before work. Hmm, good talk. Hey, you guys take care now.
Philip: How long has he been here?
Melanie: Just a couple minutes. Your mom and Vivian were here too. That was weird.
Philip: Really? What did they have to say?
Melanie: Could we talk about it later? I just need to talk to Maggie. It's my one day off, and I haven't told her about the engagement yet.
Philip: No worries.
Melanie: You sure that's okay?
Philip: Yeah, it's fine. I have something to take care of too. [Kiss] I'll call you later, okay?
Melanie: Okay. Bye.
Gabi: Hold on a sec. I've got to text my sister. She's taking overprotective to a whole new level. "Gonna be at Mia's. See you at the pub."
Mia: Must be nice to have a sister who looks out for you the way yours does.
Gabi: Yeah, maybe if I didn't have a brother who used to be in the FBI. I swear, one time a couple years ago, he threatened to have a tracking device surgically implanted in me after I missed my curfew.
Mia: Hmm, that's kind of extreme.
Gabi: Just a tad.
Mia: So, uh, what do you like to do? You know, like, what kind of stuff are you into?
Gabi: School-wise, you mean?
Gabi: Um, I was in the band at my last school, and I got into this pre-med club.
Gabi: Yeah. It was pretty cool. You got to go on hospital field trips, learn CPR. We even got to dissect a cow's eye once.
Mia: So you want to be a doctor.
Gabi: Maybe a vet, a nurse. I'm not sure yet. What about you?
Mia: I don't know. I actually met this doctor recently, and she kind of turned me off to the whole medical experience.
Gabi: How'd she do that?
Mia: She, uh, she just asked me all these questions. She was all in my business, you know? She actually even wanted to move into the house that I'm living in.
Gabi: Seriously? Why?
Mia: Well, she knows the woman who owns the house, and she supposedly had all these reasons and stuff, but I got the feeling that absolutely none of it was true.
Gabi: So she's not moving into your house?
Mia: No, thank God. Actually, I hope I never see her ever again.
Carly: I have to--I have to get back to work. It was good to see you again, Hope.
Hope: Hopefully she'll come back soon. Then you can finish what you started.
Bo: Finish what we started?
Hope: You seem confused. Surely you know what I'm talking about. Why else would I say something like that if I didn't see-- [Sighs] If I didn't see you kissing her?
Rafe: So between these very unusual boots--
Arianna: Leopard panels.
Rafe: Yeah, and four-inch stiletto heels, and between Nicole thinking that she somehow knows this person--
Arianna: It sounds like you've been up all night.
Rafe: Yeah. Really, I was calling in favors with my buddy at the FBI. This guy, he's a field agent, but he is--he's a wizard on the federal database, right?
Rafe: And he's compiling an extensive list of women who have purchased these boots and is seeing if there's a possible connection to Nicole.
[Cell phone ringing]
Rafe: And that may be the answer.
[Ringing] Yeah. Uh-huh.
Anna: That's right, sweet Sydney. Auntie Anna is going to get everything she deserves, as long as nobody gets stupid and messes it up.
[EJ clears his throat]
EJ: I didn't hear the doorbell.
Sami: No, obviously you were distracted. Harold let me in. What is that?
EJ: Nothing. It's just, um, it's, uh, you know, something an old--
[Clears throat] College buddy sent me. Where's Rafe?
Sami: He's on his way.
Sami: Look, at Christmas, I felt like we were really working together, you know? We were able to get in sync.
EJ: What exactly is your point, Samantha?
Sami: Well, now you're all distant... like you're keeping something from me. What is it?
Victor: Bo's child? That's impossible. Bo hasn't seen Carly since she left Salem, and that's been years ago.
Vivian: But even if there's a smidgeon of a doubt--
Victor: There isn't.
Vivian: Then you don't mind my pursuing this without reservations, ruthlessly.
Victor: Go right ahead, Vivian. As long as Bo doesn't get hurt, knock yourself out.
Bo: You were watching us?
Hope: Watching you? You make it sound like I set up a surveillance post. [Sighs] I really didn't expect you to move on so quickly.
Bo: [Exhales] If you and I had been together, that never would have happened. You know that.
Hope: Oh, so it's my fault. I'm to blame that you kissed Carly. You know, never mind. We have been through this so many times. Who's to blame, how it started. It's pointless. I should know that by now.
Bo: What you saw--we--that was the first time. You obviously don't believe me.
Hope: I'm sure, um, it was very difficult for you to restrain yourself since Carly got back into town. What a selfless man you are.
Brady: Chloe, that's--come on, that's crazy. You know how my grandfather is, right?
Chloe: Yeah, I know. Especially after everything he's accused me of. And I saw firsthand what drugs did to you, Brady. I really don't think you'd let someone into your life who made her living selling that stuff.
Brady: Of course not, no.
Chloe: Okay, good. Uh, all right, uh, you know what? I'm sorry, I should go.
Brady: No. So listen, before you go, tell Daniel, um, tell him hi, and tell him thank you for letting me know about this.
Chloe: I will. Take care of yourself.
Brady: I'll see you later.
Rafe: No, yeah, thanks, Charlie. Okay, I will. Aw, damn it.
Arianna: So what? What, no list?
Rafe: No, there's a list. It's a short list. Just, half the people who bought the boots paid cash for them.
Arianna: So there's no way to trace those women.
Rafe: Exactly. And it's highly likely that one of those women took Sydney, which means I'm gonna need to come up with a new way to find her.
EJ: What do you mean, something's off, Samantha? What exactly are you accusing me of?
Sami: I'm not accusing you of anything. I just--I just feel like you're, I don't know, distracted.
EJ: I'm distracted. I'm sorry, I have a lot on my mind right now, don't you?
Sami: You know I have--
EJ: I mean, that Christmas vigil didn't amount to anything, did it? I would have expected some kind of response, but nothing. Complete waste of time.
Sami: I'm sorry.
EJ: Well, I can assure you that you and I and Rafe are on exactly the same side for her, so for you to suggest otherwise, frankly--
Sami: Okay. Okay, I apologize.
EJ: I apologize. I'm sorry. I've got just a lot of stress at the moment.
Harold: Excuse me, sir. There's an urgent call for you on the library phone.
EJ: It could be something about Sydney. Just wait here.
[EJ clears his throat]
Sami: How could you? EJ, how could you keep this from me?
Mia: Uh, Gabi, Melanie. Melanie, Gabi.
Melanie: I know. You're Ari's little sister.
Mia: Gabi is, uh, starting next semester at Salem High.
Melanie: Well, welcome to Salem. You're gonna love it here, especially in the spring. [Clears throat]
Mia: Uh, what is that?
Melanie: Uh, it's just my ring. Nice, right?
Gabi: Nice? My gosh, that thing is huge.
Mia: You're engaged?
Melanie: Uh, yeah. To Philip Kiriakis. He proposed on Christmas Eve.
Gabi: How romantic. Congrats.
Mia: Uh, yeah, that's-- that's great, but, uh, what happened to Nathan?
Philip: Nathan. We have to stop meeting like this.
Nathan: Definitely. Let's really try and work on that.
Philip: Not until you tell me what happened on Christmas day. Were you on to that? Were you behind Melanie getting called back into work?
Nathan: What the hell are you talking about, Philip?
Philip: So you could be near her.
Philip: Because if that's true, a little piece of advice. Get over it, man. That ship has sailed.
Arianna: Hey, there you are. I was--hi.
Arianna: I was just gonna call you. What's wrong?
Brady: Come here, come here. It's about your cover. Time is running out.
Sami: You son of a bitch! When were you gonna tell me about that?
EJ: Samantha, please, just--
Sami: I'm not gonna calm down, EJ. I thought we were working together on this.
EJ: Just lower--hey!
Sami: I don't care who hears me!
EJ: Lower your voice!
Sami: When were you gonna tell me about that?
EJ: I don't know. Frankly, I wasn't sure what I was gonna do.
Sami: You? You? This is not all about you. She is my daughter too.
EJ: I am well aware of that, thank you.
Sami: So I don't have a say?
EJ: If I told you, I knew that you'd react exactly the way you're acting now, which is hysterical.
Sami: Oh, God, I hate you so much.
EJ: You listen to me. We need to be level-headed if we're gonna deal with this. We can't have a screaming head.
Sami: Hold on. I am not the bad guy here. You were the one who was keeping information from me because I'm not level-headed?
EJ: If you would be quiet for just--just a minute, okay? Samantha, look, I was going to tell you eventually.
Sami: Oh, eventually! Eventually? Next week? Next month? Next year?
EJ: No, I was waiting to see if this person would contact me again so that I would know how best to proceed.
Sami: How incredibly sensible of you.
EJ: What were you gonna do, Samantha? You gonna give this to Daddy and have it plastered all over the evening news?
Sami: When did you get this?
EJ: Christmas day, after I left you.
Sami: And it came here?
EJ: Yeah. I already ascertained that it had nothing to do with any of the servants. None of them know how it arrived or when it came here, and I have not told my father or Kate about this.
Sami: Well, I think we should talk to your father.
EJ: No, we should absolutely not tell my father about this. Listen, it says not to tell anybody, okay? Not to tell anybody. It says I'm being watched, Samantha. I shouldn't even be telling you. Do you understand that? I need this person to keep playing ball with us, okay?
Sami: We don't even know if it's really the kidnapper.
EJ: Oh, come on, who do you think this is from? Father Christmas? The Easter bunny?
Sami: No, no! It could be a hoax. Look, when Rafe sees it, he'll be able to help us figure out
EJ: Rafe? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Absol--listen. He is the last person we're gonna tell. The last person we are gonna tell.
Vivian: I was hoping to find you here. Sorry, did I startle you? I didn't mean to. I just wanted to see if everything was running smoothly here at the hospital for you. I mean, it's so strange that we never got a thank you note, I mean, for--
Carly: Stop it! Stop it. I know what you did.
Vivian: Excuse me?
Carly: The corpse.
Carly: The corpse you put in my patient's bed.
Vivian: I'm sorry, I'm very confused.
Carly: I got the message loud and clear, but all I am is appalled, okay, by your affinity for the dead, Vivian. It's positively ghoulish.
Vivian: Uh, I would keep my voice down.
Carly: I'm going home.
Vivian: Oh, wait, wait, wait. Carly, if I'm the bad girl here, why is it that you're so emotional and agitated? Why is it that you seem to be the one with the guilty conscience?
Bo: Hope, you can't leave like this.
Hope: Can't leave like this? What--our marriage is over, Brady. [Sighs] You can do what you want, okay? You can go where you want. You can fall in love. I don't care. I can't care. I can't care anymore.
Hope: But you know what? There is one more thing you need to know about Carly.
Nathan: No, Philip, I had nothing to do with Melanie having to go into work on Christmas, okay? I don't play stupid games like that. Maybe you do, but I don't. And I'm late. [Clicks tongue]
Philip: Hey, just as long as you understand. Melanie's made her decision.
Nathan: Yeah, she has, and here's to hoping that she doesn't regret it.
Maggie: Wow, look at the size of that diamond.
Melanie: Is it too showy?
Maggie: It's beautiful, Melanie. Congratulations.
Melanie: Really? You mean that, Maggie?
Maggie: Oh, why wouldn't I? I mean, I've known since the day we met that you've had feelings for Philip.
Melanie: Was it that obvious?
Maggie: Yes, it was--it's that obvious. And now you've gotten exactly what you wanted.
Melanie: Lucky me. Skeptical you.
Maggie: I'm happy for you as long as you're happy.
Melanie: I hope so.
Melanie: Um, I gotta go find Philip, so... [Clears throat] Maggie?
Melanie: I know what I'm doing.
Maggie: I hope so.
EJ: Samantha, you listen to me, okay? You're not telling Rafe. You're not telling your father. You're not telling anybody, okay? We are gonna do exactly what these people want us to do, all right? And you are gonna act as if you never saw that bloody note.
Sami: I am not keeping this from Rafe, EJ. I don't care what you say.
EJ: Really? So it's more important for you to share this with your boyfriend than to save your daughter?
Sami: Are you kidding me? Rafe, of course, is gonna keep it a secret, and he knows how to help us.
EJ: He was in the FBI, for--
EJ: Oh, for God's sake. Don't you get it?
EJ: Look. [Sighs] Fine, you know what? If you want to tell him, you go ahead, and if we don't find our daughter, it's on your head, sweetheart.
EJ: Not mine. Great.
Sami: EJ, you're--
Rafe: Hey. What's going on?
Gabi: Oh, and don't forget, if you can get some sort of info on any kind of medical club at the school.
Gabi: Thanks. Also, I was thinking I might volunteer as a candy striper at the hospital.
Maggie: Really? Oh, well, maybe I can help you out with that, Gabi. I work there myself.
Gabi: Oh, you do?
Maggie: Mm-hmm. Maybe some hours after school a couple of days a week?
Gabi: Or every day, if they need people.
Maggie: Okay, then. I'll talk to the volunteer coordinator.
Mia: I want to be a candy striper too. Actually, I've been dying to be one, so do you think you can help us both out, Maggie?
Carly: I'm not intimidated by you. Not in the least.
Vivian: No intention of that. I just came by for a friendly visit.
Carly: Of course you did.
Vivian: Don't be so paranoid, Carly. It's bad for the skin.
Carly: We're in the states now, Vivian. Your antics could land you in jail.
Vivian: Well, excuse me, but you're making it sound like I've committed some sort of terrible crime. Murder? Now that's the sort of egregious and unimaginable crime that should be punished, don't you think? Your love child is going to help me hurt you, and I won't rest until you suffer for every day of your life.
Hope: Carly's secret. I know you thought I was being intrusive and nosy and--
Bo: I never said that.
Hope: But you thought it.
Bo: Oh, come on, Fancy Face.
Hope: Just let me finish, please? I wanted to know the secret because I was scared it might come between us. I was scared it would put your life in danger, and I wanted to be there for you. I wanted to protect you because you're my husband and I love you. Just so you know, I've lost all interest. Carly and her secret can go to hell.
Brady: Chloe came to me. Victor told Daniel that you were dealing.
Arianna: That's just great.
Brady: It's anything but great.
Arianna: I can fix this.
Brady: How are you gonna fix this?
Arianna: Um, I actually have to meet Troy right now, so I can, um, you know, try to push things again. That--that's all I can do.
Brady: I get that, but you need to be really careful, you understand?
Arianna: Yes, I will. I will, okay? I will. [Kiss] All right. Bye.
Brady: Maybe there's something I could do.
Anna: Okay, the next note is prepared, Sydney. But will it ever be sent? That is the burning question.
Rafe: Sami. Does one of you want to say something?
EJ: It's just the pressure. I think it's just getting to us a little bit. We were just, uh, frustrated, weren't we, Samantha? Just not quite sure how to proceed.
Rafe: Is that it? There's nothing else?
Sami: EJ and I were having a disagreement, but I think I'm right. I do. Which means there's something that I have to tell you, Rafe.
Melanie: Ooh, I found him.
Philip: Hey, you.
Melanie: Mr. Lost-in-thought.
Philip: Come here.
Melanie: All right, are you gonna tell me what's wrong with you, or am I gonna have to guess? And don't tell me "nothing," because I can read you like a celebrity gossip blog.
Philip: I'll have to remember that. [Laughs]
Melanie: Come clean, Philip.
Philip: It's about our New Year's Eve. I just got the best idea.
Nathan: Thank you.
Lexie: Oh, Nathan, may I have a word with you, please?
Nathan: Everything okay?
Lexie: You were supposed to check on Mr. Salinger before you left yesterday.
Nathan: Yeah, um, I, uh, I know. I-I-I called.
Lexie: You called-- you called and you had Dr. Simon do it instead.
Lexie: I'd also like to talk about your demeanor. You seem distracted.
Nathan: I do?
Lexie: Nathan, look, I know that Philip and Melanie just got engaged. I also know--well, I'm pretty sure most everyone here at the hospital knows that you and Melanie, well, you had feelings for each other. Is it safe to assume that that's what's distracting you?
Nathan: No, it's not. Look, I'm dealing with it, all right.
Lexie: How? How? By giving up? Come on, Nathan, don't be stupid.
Brady: What is the matter with you?
Victor: Good morning to you too, Brady.
Brady: You told Daniel that Arianna was a drug dealer?
Victor: That's the truth, isn't it? What, are you not proud of the fact that you're dating a successful businesswoman? I think you'd want the whole world to know.
Brady: This is real funny to you, isn't it?
Victor: On the contrary. I think it's an unmitigated disaster.
Brady: Who else did you tell? Did you tell Bo, for God's sake?
Victor: No, but I will if I have to. Whatever I have to do to end this unsavory relationship that you have with Arianna Hernandez, that is what I will do. I want that woman out of your life.
Arianna: Hey, I thought that was you. Hi.
Troy: Arianna, right?
Troy: How's it going?
Troy: See, I can play along.
Arianna: Yes, you can. So this is how we're gonna do it. Public places, no more awkward moments like the one we had last week with EJ DiMera.
Troy: Whatever you want, sweetheart. So...the floor is yours. What are we meeting about?
Arianna: I'm sure you've heard that a very impressive amount of product was moved recently on my end. All the profits have been deposited into a special account.
Troy: You had a banner week. Keep up the great work.
Arianna: Thank you.
Troy: You look like you want to say something.
Arianna: It's about what we discussed before. About my moving up the corporate ladder.
Troy: Forget it. Bit of advice passed down from generations. Know your place. Until next time.
Sami: Rafe, um...
[Cell phone ringing]
Sami: I think you should know.
Rafe: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. This--yeah, it's the bureau. This could be a lead. I gotta take this.
EJ: Well, why don't we give you a little bit of privacy? Come on, Samantha.
EJ: Here we go.
Sami: EJ, get off me. Look, I think we should tell him, okay? I think it's important. I think he'll help us. What are you doing?
EJ: I'm begging you, Samantha, okay? We don't know, if we tell him, what he's gonna do or who he might tell. He might alert whoever has Sydney, all right? We can't do that. Once you tell him, you can't just take it back. You understand? Oh, God, what am I talking to you for, you know? You don't listen to anything but yourself.
EJ: Look, I have a meeting, all right? And I have to get going, so I'm gonna be back shortly. I suppose I will have to live with the consequences of your decision. Just make sure we both don't have to regret it, please.
Sami: EJ. [Sighs] [Exhales]
Nathan: You think I'm being stupid?
Lexie: Okay, maybe I'm a bit biased, all right? I mean, Philip Kiriakis isn't my favorite person. But aside from that, Nathan, if you love Melanie, if you think she loves you, say something. Do something. I mean, you may not have much time.
Melanie: You had an idea?
Philip: Shocking, huh?
Melanie: Okay. Okay, let me guess. We're going to fly to New York City and watch the ball drop in Times Square.
Melanie: Okay, we're going to throw a lavish party where everyone gets blotto and stupid.
Philip: Been there, done that, and no.
Melanie: Shoot. Okay, I'm done guessing.
Philip: Well, I know Vivian and my mother gave you a hard time about our wedding plans, so...
Melanie: Oh, yeah. I hope you're okay with this. We're going to have a huge wedding with thousands of guests on a private cruise to Stefano's island, complete with white doves and Beyoncé.
Philip: I don't agree with that, actually. I don't think we should go through with that at all.
Melanie: I am so bummed. What's your plan?
Philip: Well, it all ties in to our New Year's Eve plan, because that's when we're going to elope.
Maggie: Sure. Sure, if you want to be candy stripers, I'll see what I can do for both of you.
Gabi: Thanks so much. Well, I-I really better get going. Uh, see you later, Mia.
Mia: For sure.
Maggie: What was that?
Mia: What was what?
Maggie: Ooh, let me see. You never expressed any interest in being a volunteer at the hospital before.
Mia: Well, I am now.
Maggie: Because Gabi is?
Mia: What? No. That has nothing to do with it.
Maggie: Are you sure? Because it seems to me like you're feeling a little competitive with her, that you somehow feel threatened by her interest--
Mia: What are you saying? What are you accusing me of?
Maggie: I'm not accusing you, no.
Mia: Uh, yeah. You're making it seem like I'm-- I'm--I don't have a mind of my own and I'm selfish and I make everything about me.
Maggie: Mia, honey, I never said that.
Mia: That's the kind of stuff my mother used to say to me. "You think the whole world revolves around you, don't you, Mia? You think you always have to come first. That's why people are so put off by you. Because you're a selfish little bitch."
Maggie: Well, Mia, I'm sorry your mother speaks to you that way.
Mia: Even during Christmas, it's all she used to say to me.
Maggie: Well, that must have been very difficult for you.
Mia: You know what my mother has done my whole life? She's made me feel like a loser. Like I was in her way. So you know what? I'm gonna do her a favor. I'm gonna stay away from her. From now on, I'm gonna pretend she's dead, that I don't have a mother.
Carly: I shouldn't be here. I just--something happened, and you're the only person that I can talk to.
Bo: That's okay. It's all right. Come on in.
Bo: What happened?
Carly: Vivian. She showed up at the hospital, and she was there, you know, to rattle me, and I pretended that she didn't, but, oh, I shouldn't be here.
Bo: Hey, hey, hey. It's okay.
Carly: She saw us kissing, didn't she? I could tell by the way she looked at us, and I-- [Sighs] I'm sorry.
Vivian: Victor, I'm home. Guess who I saw at the hospital today.
Victor: I give up.
Vivian: Well, the pressure has finally gotten to her. Carly is an absolute mess. Oh, she's pretending to be tough, but she's actually frightened out of her mind, which is gonna make it all the easier to destroy her.
Troy: Mr. DiMera.
EJ: I don't have a huge amount of time, so...
Troy: Got it. I just want to let you know that I met with our girl.
Troy: My phone.
Rafe: Sami. Hey. What, what is it?
Sami: Rafe, I have to do the right thing. I have to. I mean, it is so important, especially now.
Rafe: Okay. The right thing? What are you talking about? Does this have something to do with Sydney?
Vivian: I have the terrible secret that can blow her out of the water.
Bo: Everything's closing in on you.
Sami: I just don't know what to do.
