Arianna: Mm-mm, no, no, no.
Brady: What, what, what?
Arianna: No, we can't do this.
Brady: Why the hell not?
Nicole: Hold on a minute. Chad, please, can't we just talk?
Chad: There's nothing left to say except I'll see you in court.
Nicole: Don't you want to see Sydney?
Chad: Yeah, of course I do, but I mean--
Nicole: Okay, then, fine. Look... I have an offer you just can't turn down.
Mia: Nicole's the only mother Sydney's ever known. I've seen them together. She really loves her.
Will: I know.
Mia: W-what is Chad thinking? He knows nothing about taking care of a baby. Will... he won't listen to me. I can't get through to him. What? What are you thinking?
Will: Figured it out. I think I know who can help us.
Sami: EJ, I would not normally do this, but you are a man, so you can't possibly understand what it is like to be a mother. Being a mother's an instinct. You can't help yourself! Right or wrong doesn't even come into it. You just do what you think is best for your child, and that is what Nicole was doing.
EJ: That's a very nice theory, Samantha. But Sydney is not Nicole's child. And I really don't think you're in any position to lecture me as to what is right or wrong.
Sami: Are you serious? Do you really think it's worth it to play the injured party here when a child's life is at stake? If you would just stop being so pigheaded for a second, you would admit that you love her as if she were your own.
Don't tell me how I feel.
Sami: EJ, we both know how you feel. You're just lying to yourself about it. You threw her out of this house. You threw your own child out of this house because your feelings were hurt!
EJ: She is not my child.
Sami: She is. She is your baby in every way that counts. If you admit to yourself that it doesn't really matter to you that she's not your own flesh and blood, you would do what was right and help her stay with her mother.
EJ: Just go, Samantha. I'm not talking to you about this. Come on, go.
Sami: EJ, I am not leaving until you admit to me... that you love her as if she were your own. And if you are a man, you would stand up and do what's right for your baby and help her stay with Nicole!
Nathan: It was so weird. How did they do it?
Melanie: Beats me.
Nathan: I mean, we were standing, what, three feet away from each other, and I had on my best doctor face, and somehow, they just knew. I mean, they must have been at least what--in their 60s? They knew that we were... [Clears throat] Involved.
Melanie: Yeah, I don't-- I don't like thinking about people that old thinking about things like that. I feel like they should be worried about, like, their Medicare or something.
Nathan: Old people's intuitions are really creepy. [Both giggling] Look, we need to be very smart about this, 'cause if we get caught, I'm gonna lose my job, and you're gonna get kicked out of the nursing program.
Melanie: Yeah, like it's my fault. You're the one drooling all over this. I mean, and who could blame you when they have me wearing these?
Nathan: Maybe we should just put a paper bag over your head.
Melanie: [Laughing] Yeah, really, like it's just my face that drives you crazy.
Nathan: I feel strongly that, um--[Clears throat]-- An aggressive antibiotic protocol is sometimes counter-indicated. Oh, hey, Maxine. Uh...care to join in our shop talk?
Melanie: I learn so much just by listening.
Maxine: Well, I want you to start talking. I've been hearing some pretty interesting rumors from the other student nurses, and I just know you'll be able to clear it all up for me.
EJ: Samantha, this is none of your business.
Sami: Okay, EJ, you screwed up.
EJ: What? I screw--
Sami: Yes. And it's understandable. It's--it's sad, really... but the person who's really paying here is that innocent little child.
EJ: I had nothing to do with this--nothing, okay? I was manipulated. I was lied to--
Sami: But not by Sydney! Not by your daughter. EJ... you know she needs you. You know that Chad can't be a real father to her. You know that she needs Nicole, and you can make that happen.
EJ: What am I supposed to do? You want me to just go out there and help Nicole?
Sami: Come on, you have to know that if I'm taking Nicole's side, that should prove to you how much she has changed.
EJ: [Scoffs] You're taking her side 'cause the two of you are cut from the same cloth. And I'm not changing my mind, thank you.
Sami: Yeah, I guess I'm... beginning to believe that nothing will change your mind. And it's too bad. It's too bad because that just means that our beautiful son... Johnny has a father who doesn't know how to love.
Nicole: We both want what's best for Sydney. Look, I'm sure we can figure something out.
Chad: Why? I know what you want.
Nicole: Well, I don't know what you want. Tell me, talk to me. I'm sure we can come up with something.
Chad: You're trying to trick me.
Nicole: No. No, you're too smart for that. Look, just tell me where you are. I can be there in five minutes. You owe it to yourself and... to your baby.
Chad: Down at the docks, pier 5.
Nicole: Stay there. I think I know what he might want more than Sydney.
Brady: That wasn't a rhetorical question, you know. Why--why can't we do this? What's wrong?
Arianna: I-I just--
Brady: I mean, was I that far off? I mean, we were looking at each other. Your face was next to mine. You looked like you wanted to kiss me. You didn't want me to kiss you?
Arianna: Of course I wanted to kiss you! I mean, my God, what girl wouldn't want to kiss you?
Brady: This is happening over and over and over again. We're getting to the same point. The point is I don't know what the hell's going on anymore.
Arianna: You know what? I shouldn't have come over here.
Brady: No, Ari, Ari--[Laughs] Why wouldn't you want to have come over? I mean, then you wouldn't have been able to, you know, push me away again when I tried to kiss you and not told me why again. I mean, we--we would have missed all this fun.
Arianna: I'm sorry.
Brady: I don't get it. "Brady, you're a great guy, but you're kind of dull. Brady, I want to kiss you, but we just can't do this." You are fighting me tooth and nail here, and... you're refusing to tell me why.
Melanie: You know how I feel about rumors. What was it Shakespeare said?
Maxine: He said be quiet and answer the head nurse's questions. I heard you volunteered for two extra shifts. Why?
Melanie: I was trying to be helpful.
Maxine: Okay. Now try an answer I can believe.
Nathan: Why can't you believe that?
Maxine: Excuse me?
Nathan: I mean, I'm just saying, you're always so suspicious of her, and she does a good job and tries really hard.
Melanie: Dr. Horton, it's-- look, Malika's brother is home on leave, so I thought I'd take some of her shifts so she could be home with him for a little bit longer.
Melanie: Did Laurie and Beth Ann leave out that part of the story?
Nicole: Hi, Lexie.
Lexie: You were... visiting my father.
Nicole: Yeah. Weird, huh?
Nicole: We-- well, as it turns out, we have a lot in common. I miss talking to him. I miss a lot of things, actually.
Lexie: You okay?
Nicole: Look, Lexie, you don't--you don't have to be nice to me, okay? I know how much you love EJ, and I know what you must think of me.
Lexie: No, you don't. Hi, sweetheart. Hi, Sydney. It looks like she's getting another tooth. [Chuckles] Nicole... I know firsthand... the extent a woman will go to protect her child. I don't judge.
Nicole: [Chuckles] A DiMera who doesn't judge? Hmm, that doesn't happen.
Lexie: Well, you must have felt so alone. I wish I could have helped.
Nicole: Could you help now?
Lexie: Well, I-I don't think anything I say to EJ will have much impact.
Nicole: No, t-that's not what I mean. This is about Sydney, and it's very, very important.
EJ: The last few months would not have been sheer hell for me if I did not know how to love.
Sami: Okay, fine. All right, you know how to love, but it is a pretty screwed up version, don't you think? You tried to take Johnny from me. You threw Nicole and your own baby out of your house?
EJ: You did that to me, both of you!
Sami: EJ, what I did was for my children. I was trying to protect Grace. What you do is for payback... trying to get revenge! That is not what a parent does. A parent does what they can for their children, trying to put their children's needs ahead of everything else. You let your anger be in charge. You--you can't see past your own anger! You let it control everything!
EJ: Get out...now.
Sami: Don't you see what you're doing? You--you don't even see Sydney as a person anymore, do you? She's just a weapon for you to get revenge--
EJ: Get out of my house!
Sami: And you'd better think that Johnny will see that, that he will know that his happiness isn't as important to you as getting revenge.
EJ: Enough. Leave.
Sami: EJ, you keep throwing people out of this house... and one day you're gonna find yourself all alone.
Melanie: Hi. I need you to initial these.
Nathan: What are they?
Melanie: They are, uh... old bedpan inventories. We needed a cover. Look, if we don't want anybody to find out, you got to stop defending me to the wicked witch of 4 west.
Nathan: Either way, she shouldn't have talked to you that way.
Melanie: Probably not, but she'll pay for it in the afterlife.
Melanie: You got to stop defending me. You're making it obvious.
Nathan: Yes, ma'am.
Melanie: Now... about this date. I need you to tell me where it is so I can wear something inappropriate.
Nathan: [Whispering] It's a surprise. [Clears throat]
Melanie: Uh, that scares me. You know I have to be in charge of all the decisions.
Nathan: You're gonna love it.
Melanie: Chez Rouge?
Nathan: Oh, God, no. Are you kidding? Maggie's working tonight. Given the new house rules, I don't really think she should see us together on a date.
Melanie: Okay, okay, point made. I just... I just hope that...
Nathan: [Imitating] You just hope that...
Melanie: It's, you know, at least that expensive.
Nathan: Oh, go figure.
Melanie: [Snorts] Oh, what does that mean?
Nathan: Thank you.
Melanie: Yes, Dr. Horton, I will do that right away.
Lexie: When I took Sydney to day care, oh, my goodness, Theo was thrilled.
Maxine: [Chuckles] Dr. Carver--
Lexie: And then he said to me, you know, very seriously, you know, "It's okay, Mommy. I'll watch out for her."
Maxine: Look, I'm glad you're back, but... I think maybe you should check in on your father.
Lexie: Is something wrong?
Maxine: You tell me.
Lexie: What the hell are you doing in here?
Chad: Where's my kid?
Nicole: She's with her aunt. She's fine.
Chad: Hey, I-I'm sorry. I don't have a sister. You said I could see her.
Nicole: You can, and you will, Chad, just not right now. You don't want her here. Trust me, you don't.
Mia: I know you're trying to help, but... I really don't see why Chad would listen to your mom when he won't listen to anyone else.
Will: Look, she can be really persuasive sometimes, I swear. She has this way of getting around rules and stuff. Usually, it drives me crazy, but-- hey!
Will: Mom, we were just talking about you.
Sami: What's up?
Will: We were talking about you because... uh, because Mia kind of needs some help. Maybe you should sit down. There's a lot to explain.
Sami: Oh, uh...you don't have to. I talked to EJ. He's explained everything.
Mia: Chad can't take my baby, Ms. Brady. He can't. Please don't let that happen.
Lexie: I asked what you're doing here.
Victor: I'm visiting a sick friend.
Lexie: Yeah, a friend you held hostage and threatened to kill!
Victor: I wouldn't kill Stefano... you know, unless I had to.
Lexie: Get out.
Victor: Sure. Not as entertaining as he usually is anyway.
Lexie: I don't find this funny, Victor.
Victor: Alexandra, neither do I. In fact, I find it scary. I prefer the world where I can think of my old enemy as invincible. The myth of the phoenix gives us all hope.
Lexie: Do you ever think of how much of the world's pain is caused by old men trying to pretend they're not?
Victor: You know, your father and I had a great deal in common, actually. We both had strong, beautiful, good daughters. He's so lucky to still have you.
Lexie: Get out.
Victor: At least tell me how he's doing. What's the prognosis?
Lexie: That is none of your business.
Victor: I hope he recovers, Alexandra, I really do. No way Kate should get off the hook this easily. Bitch.
[Door thuds closed]
Brady: I asked you a simple question. You can't even look me in the eye. What is it, what--you have some deep, dark secret or something? I'm a recovering addict. I know a few things about pasts. It's okay.
Arianna: No, y-you don't know.
Brady: I don't know...what, exactly?
Victor: Now, a little over ten minutes ago, Brady texted me. He should be walking through that door any second. You will greet him for the last time. Is that clear?
Arianna: I got to go.
Brady: Hold on, hold on. You were looking at that, weren't you? This is about my grandfather, isn't it? Isn't it?
Lexie: Oh, sweetheart.
EJ: What is she doing here?
Lexie: EJ, hi.
EJ: What is she doing here? What are you doing, Lexie?
Lexie: I'm loving my niece!
EJ: Don't start with me, please, Alexandra. What are you d--Alexandra.
Lexie: This is my niece, my goddaughter. And the fact that you are acting like a complete idiot does not change things.
EJ: I've had enough lectures for one day, thank you. What is she doing here? More to the point, what the hell is Nicole doing?
Chad: Are you threatening me?
Nicole: No, because I know that wouldn't work, would it? And I know men like you don't like to be pushed around.
Chad: You know nothing about me.
Nicole: Well, I know that you're a fighter. And I know that you don't scare easily. And I know that you don't want sole responsibility of that baby.
Chad: She's my kid. And Mia just can't give her away without telling me.
Nicole: You see, that's what I think this is about... Mia. You loved her... and I think you still do.
Chad: She's a lying bitch.
Nicole: Well, she was trying to do what was best for your baby. And you love her because she's a sweet, beautiful girl. And giving Sydney to me was hard because she was just trying to do what was right.
Chad: Look, I don't want to hear any of this. You told me that I could see my kid and lied. Just like her, you played me. Later, bitch. See you in court.
Nicole: Wait a minute, wait. Don't you want to know why I'm here? Why...I wanted to see you alone?
Sami: I'm so sorry that you had to go through this alone, Mia.
Mia: My mother, she never would have understood.
Sami: Well, I have a really understanding mom, and I still felt alone.
Mia: Well, you kept your baby. You must think I should have too.
Sami: Mia, I don't think that, all right? I'm not here to judge you. I... based on everything you have told me about Chad, I can understand why you did what you did and why you didn't tell him. And it seems like he is not putting Sydney first right now, which is exactly what you were doing since the moment you found out you were pregnant, right? What about you? You knew Sydney was Mia's?
Will: [Stammers] I mean, not for that long. Mom, I...I couldn't tell you. I mean, I couldn't tell anyone.
Mia: I made him promise.
Sami: It's okay. I understand. I also now understand why you were so close to Grace, why you loved her so much.
Mia: Yeah, it's--it's weird that they were born on the same day. It's like fate or something.
Sami: Or something. What about how you met Nicole? Was that fate?
Melanie: Ooh, is it hot in here, or is it just m-me?
Maggie: Trust me, it's just you.
Brady: You were staring at his picture just now.
Arianna: You know what? I don't know what you're talking about.
Brady: It's okay. I understand. I get it. You're worried about me "working" for my grandfather in the family business, right?
Brady: I can assure you that I am in the legitimate area of the family business, okay? That--you can trust me.
Arianna: I know I can trust you. You can't trust me.
Mia: It was, uh... my doctor who introduced me to Nicole.
Sami: Did you know right from the beginning that Nicole was interested in adopting your baby?
Mia: Why else would anyone be interested in me? I was poor, alone, and pregnant.
Will: Just what Nicole was looking for.
Mia: She was, uh... really nice sometimes.
Mia: Well, when the baby was being born and the doctor couldn't get there... it was really special. I don't even know how to explain it. And I could tell she loved my little girl right from the beginning.
Will: And then she wanted you out of the picture, huh?
Mia: I understand that. I mean, I would have felt the same way.
Sami: Mia, I have to ask you something. And I really want you to think through...it before you answer me, okay?
Sami: Are you sure you want your baby to stay with Nicole? Are you sure you don't want to raise her yourself?
Chad: Let me guess. The threats didn't work, so now you're gonna try to bribe me.
Nicole: No, I don't think that'll work either.
Chad: Because you're flat broke. You're not a DiMera anymore. You're down and out and still think you should have my kid.
Nicole: Chad, ask anyone. Even ask EJ. I'm a great mother to that little girl. She loves me, and she knows I'm her mother. If you take her away from me, you will break her heart.
Chad: She's a baby. She doesn't know anything.
Nicole: Yes, she does. You don't know. You don't even care! Okay, wait a minute, wait, wait. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You...you're just trying to do what's best for her. You do care. You really do love her, don't you?
Chad: Yeah, I guess so.
Nicole: I know you do. So if you love her, Chad, do what Mia did. Let her go.
Brady: [Sighs] I'm just not buying this. You're working way too hard at shoving me away. You're saying everything that comes to the top of your head, but you're not telling me the truth.
Arianna: Because I can't.
Brady: No. It's because you won't.
Melanie: I must have just been ironing too long. Got warm in here.
Maggie: You going out?
Maggie: With Nathan?
Melanie: Mm-hmm. I'm sorry.
Maggie: You don't want to go?
Melanie: No, of course not. I just--I know you don't want us to see each other.
Maggie: Well, that's not my call, is it?
Melanie: Guess not. I just wish you were okay with it. I liked it better when you liked me.
Maggie: I still like you, Melanie. I just worry.
Melanie: That I'm gonna hurt Nathan? Or do something stupid like I did with Philip?
Maggie: Yes. That's why I worry... because Nathan is not Philip. He doesn't have a bazillion dollars to fall back on. What he has is a career. And it's at a very crucial time in his career right now. And, you know, this is really hard. I swore I would keep my mouth shut.
Nathan: But if you did, you wouldn't be my grandma Maggie, would you?
Mia: No. No, I-I want what's best for Sydney, and that's Nicole... not me.
Sami: You're sure about that.
Mia: I am. I just...wish I could make Chad see that.
Sami: [Scoffs] Cover your ears. Look, guys can be... territorial sometimes, you know? Like, "Look what I made."
Will: Right. All men are the same.
Sami: I'm serious. I think maybe sometimes their egos get involved too, you know? It can complicate things.
Mia: It is Chad's ego, and that's all it is. He doesn't want to take care of Sydney. He's just mad at me. He can't take care of Sydney. I don't know what I'm going to do, but he can't take my baby. He just can't.
Lexie: I'm not happy about this. I can't reach Nicole. Her phone goes straight to voice mail.
EJ: Everything is fine.
Lexie: I told Nicole I would watch the baby, not give her over to you.
EJ: Mary has her, okay? And I told her to call Nicole every 15 minutes. And Sydney loves Mary, so she's as happy as can be.
Lexie: Okay, EJ, look. I know you're mad at me, okay? You're mad that I had the temerity to help Nicole.
EJ: I think you should keep your nose out of other people's business, Lexie.
Lexie: You don't want anyone to see me with Sydney, because, I mean, after all, she's been banned, right? I mean, EJ has spoken. This baby is no longer a DiMera.
EJ: Why are you lashing out at me?
Lexie: Because I know what Nicole is going through. I understand her pain, EJ.
EJ: She brought all of this on herself.
Lexie: Okay, but look, there's no happy ending for Nicole or for this baby, okay? So maybe--maybe I feel like being nice to her because I know that her whole world is about to just cave in on her.
EJ: Lexie, this is killing me. Don't you see that?
Lexie: I do. But God knows there is more than enough pain for everyone involved.
Nicole: What you have to realize is... just because you're letting her go doesn't mean she'll be out of your life. I swear, Chad, I'll keep telling her about you and--and the wonderful thing that you did, the heroic thing.
Chad: Yeah, right.
Nicole: And you can still see her, okay? We'll make sure that you have visitation rights. Look, you're not... losing her. You're just making sure she's safe and taken care of.
Chad: By you? You're gonna keep her safe. A criminal who doesn't have a job, doesn't have a home?
Nicole: Yes, Chad. I'll make sure she has everything.
Chad: Oh, you've done such a great job of that so far. You know, when I take you to court, I'm gonna win--hands down.
Maggie: I don't mean to rain on your parade. I mean, you both get to make your own decisions. It's...[Sniffles] It's just that... that Mia's staying here now, and she's in a very vulnerable place. So you agree to no PDAs in the house, and I agree to butt out. [Crying] And I'm really trying, okay? Okay. [Sniffles] You all have a fun evening, okay?
Melanie: Don't be. [Crying] She's just looking out for you. She just thinks I'm gonna hurt you because... that's a distinct possibility.
Nathan: It's bull.
Melanie: Nick's in jail. [Laughs] Okay? I made a porn star out of Philip. I almost lost you your job. And now--what? What? Why are you laughing? I'm being serious.
Nathan: So am I. [Exhales deeply] Okay, we got to go right now.
Nathan: Because it's against the rules for us to kiss. And when you talk like that... I can't help myself.
Brady: You--you seem really unhappy.
Arianna: Look, I know I'm not being fair, and I know that I'm hurting you.
Brady: All right, all right. Look, if there's something that you don't want me to know... I can live with it. I respect privacy. I understand the need for it.
Arianna: But that's just part of it.
Arianna: Look, I don't want to push you away. And you might have noticed from the way I showed up at your doorstep, I'm not really good at that.
Brady: Yeah, I don't think your heart's in it.
Arianna: It's not. As a matter of fact, it's got, like, a completely different game plan, so... [Chuckles]
Brady: I'm on your heart's side.
Arianna: Okay, so, um... if we, uh... if we proceed--
Brady: If we--if we proceed...
Arianna: [Laughs] If we proceed...
Brady: What does that mean? Sweep me off my feet, why don't you? Proceed?
Arianna: I just--I mean, I-- it's kind of hard for me to say, okay, all right?
Brady: Okay, go ahead.
Arianna: If we...if we just do this--whatever we want to call it... it has got to be in private. I mean, I am talking nobody can know about this, no one.
Brady: Wow, that sounds really interesting, actually.
Brady: Hey, I-I-I would do anything in the world if it meant that we could... proceed.
Mia: I'm sorry. I'm not your problem.
Sami: You're not a problem at all, Mia. Look, Sydney is Johnny's sister. He's already lost Grace. I am not gonna let him lose another sister.
Mia: You're gonna help me?
Sami: I promise I'm gonna help you. I'm gonna do everything I can to make sure that beautiful little baby stays with her mother.
EJ: How's he doing?
Lexie: No change. Every hour of no change means less chances of a recovery.
EJ: He's not going to die. He's Stefano DiMera.
Lexie: It's out of your hands, EJ. There's nothing you can do to help him. But... you could help Nicole... your daughter. EJ, if you have a chance at happiness, take it.
Nicole: You know... we have more in common than you realize. We both want Sydney, and we both want to win.
Chad: But only one of us will.
Nicole: So let it be Sydney. Let's do what's best for her.
Chad: No, what's best for her is to be with her father--her real father. And there's nothing you can say or do that'll make me change my mind.
[Door thuds closed]
Melanie: Um, you know what? We--we should go.
Nathan: Uh, right.
Melanie: We should get going soon.
Nathan: I'm gonna call and move up the reservations for us.
Melanie: Yeah, you could. You could do that. We could go--we could go sit in a stuffy restaurant, talk about things that people in stuffy restaurants talk about.
Nathan: So you have a better idea?
Melanie: I always do.
Nathan: Of course.
Melanie: Is that too weird?
Nathan: Totally. Let's do it.
Melanie: Okay! Ha ha! Okay, um...
Brady: You know what? I'm thinking strongly that we should just stick to nonverbal communication.
Arianna: Yeah. I agree... definitely. But, um... if we're gonna keep this, you know, private, don't you think I should get going?
Brady: No. Not at all.
Arianna: Yes. I got to go. I do, I do, I have to go. Um... I need to get to work. Yeah. Okay? Yes, but I will call you, promise. And... I'm really glad I stopped by.
Brady: Yeah. I'll see you later, pal, buddy.
Arianna: Okay, pal. [Giggles]
Brady: Before you go, I want to tell you something. I know that you and Sami are concerned about Rafe. I wanted to let you know I'm gonna do everything I can to track him down, okay?
Arianna: You know what? That makes me feel better. Not a lot does these days.
Brady: Grandfather, I... didn't know you were here.
Victor: Just got in. Saw Stefano in that damn hospital bed.
[Ice cubes clinking]
Victor: Decided to walk home. May do it again next month.
Brady: You came through the back door, then?
Victor: I would think that would be obvious.
Brady: [Clears throat] All right, well, I was just about to take off, so...
Victor: Wait a second. Before you go... how's everything with you?
Brady: Oh, it's, uh--it's fine. Actually, to be honest with you, it's... never better.
Victor: So you think.
Nicole: You know, maybe we're going about this the wrong way. Instead of this being a either-or situation... maybe we can make it a win-win.
Chad: What are you talking about?
Nicole: Well, you're a strong... handsome young man with needs. And... I'm not without certain talents. Maybe we could put those two together and come up with something that would be... beneficial for both of us.
Chad: Beneficial how?
Nicole: [Chuckles] Do I have to draw you a picture?
Chad: Mrs. DiMera... are you trying to seduce me?
EJ: I just--I wish I could just talk to you! [Sighs] You would understand. I try--you know, I try talking to Lexie, and I tell her that this is just--it's killing me. I-I can't be a father to Sydney. I have to let her go. I don't have a choice. I don't have a choice.
Arianna: Go find yourself a new stooge. I quit.
Brady: You can't tell anyone, no one.
Chad: My daughter's being raised by a porn star.
