Melanie: Well, I'd ask how you're doing, but the look on your face kinda sums it up. You waiting for someone?
Brady: Melanie, I'm not good company right now.
Melanie: Okay, let's see. Last time I left you was at the Cheatin' Heart, and you were talking about how you were gonna save Nicole's marriage. So I'm assuming that didn't work out.
Brady: It was only a matter of time. Nicole built this--house of cards, and it was... only a matter of time before somebody said the wrong thing at the wrong time with the wrong person.
Melanie: Okay. So...who said the wrong thing?
Brady: You're looking at him.
Brady: And the, uh, cards... they've come crashing down.
[Knocking on door]
Nicole: Hey! Thank God I caught you.
Mia: Uh, I was actually just on my way out.
Nicole: I don't care. Look...I'm in trouble, Mia. I need a favor--not for me, but for Sydney.
Mia: For Sydney?
Nicole: Yes. Her future depends on it.
Sami: Hey, Nicole, it's Sami. Look, I know you're going through a lot right now, but, um, you were there for me when I needed help. So I'd like to help you if you want it. So give me a call.
[Knocking on door]
Sami: Dad! Oh!
Roman: Hey, sweetheart.
Sami: Hi! What's going on? What are you--
Arianna: Hi, Sami. Commander, I got your message. I got here as soon as I could.
Sami: Oh, God. It's about Rafe, isn't it?
[Door clicks open]
Justin: Hey, Bo.
Justin: Sorry I'm late.
Bo: No, no, no problem, um... your message was a bit garbled. It kept coming in and out.
Justin: Yeah, I know. It was a poor signal.
Bo: All I got was, "Brady Pub, 9:00 a.m." So here I am. What's up?
Carly: Hi. Thanks. Yeah.
Omar: I trust you slept well.
Carly: No. No, not really. I'm a hunted woman, Omar. Lawrence's men won't rest until they find his killer. And since you tell me any communication we make will betray our location, I'm probably not gonna rest until landfall. If then.
Omar: What you need, young lady, is to keep your strength up. I will make us some breakfast.
Carly: Okay. I just hope I can get to Bo in time. And that he's willing to help me.
Justin: I was out of town last night. I actually called you when I was driving back. That's why the connection was so bad.
Bo: Uh-huh. Where'd ya go?
Justin: To see Hope.
Ciara: Mommy, why are you packing?
Hope: Because... I know how much you miss your daddy... and I think it's time I took you back to see him. You think that's a good idea?
Ciara: Oh, Mommy.
Ciara: I wanna go home!
Hope: I know you do, sweetheart. Come here. I know you do.
Bo: Did Hope invite you up to see her or...did you invite yourself?
Justin: Hey, come on. You understand that I am only here to help you two. I would never do that.
Bo: Yeah, I understand, I-- I'm just a little...put off because Hope hasn't contacted me yet and you actually... got to see her, spend some time with her.
Justin: I saw her because... she wanted my help.
Bo: What kind of help?
Justin: It's a...legal matter. She wanted me to give you this.
Melanie: So you said the wrong thing at the wrong time. All right. So was it like a...slip of the tongue kind of thing?
Brady: No. It was more like a bad connection kind of thing.
Melanie: I don't understand.
Brady: I've got some advice for you--if you're ever on the phone...
Brady: And it's real staticky on the other end of the line, and you're not exactly sure who it is on the other end of the line...
Brady: [Sighs] Hang up the phone. Just shut up and hang up the phone.
Melanie: Okay, Brady, will you just tell me what happened, please?
Brady: You know a lot of it, Melanie. You know I was lying for Nicole. I was protecting her. I was keeping a secret for her.
Melanie: Right. And it was pretty clear that if you'd do that for Nicole, you'd do anything for her.
Brady: Yes. I would. And I did. Even though it was a horrible mistake, but--but I just-- I just kept goin' with the whole thing.
Melanie: Okay, um... Brady, you're my friend... and I believe in you. I do. So I know whatever you did, you did it out of love. You're not really guilty of anything.
Brady: I don't think it works that way.
Melanie: Oh, sure, it does. To me--in my book, anyways. Look, we all know... love makes us go a little insane. So...we're not really culpable if we do something kinda stupid.
Brady: The world according to Melanie Layton, it's--
Melanie: [Laughing] Look... just...just tell me what happened.
Brady: Okay. A couple of weeks ago, Arianna overheard me talking to Nicole, and she figured out that I was keeping a secret for Nicole.
Melanie: Was Arianna eavesdropping on your conversation?
Brady: She probably didn't mean to.
Melanie: It doesn't matter. That wasn't very nice.
Brady: I know, but it--it was my fault, because I shouldn't been talking where I could have been heard. Anyway, I panicked. I called Nicole in Paris. EJ picked up the phone. I didn't know it because it was staticky, it was a bad connection.
Melanie: Oh...ah... then you blabbed everything...
Brady: Yep. I--yeah.
Melanie: To EJ, which put him on high alert.
Brady: That's putting it mildly, Mel.
Melanie: Okay. Uh-oh. Okay, a-all right, okay, so... so then...what was the secret?
Chad: Mia, hey, it's, uh, it's Chad. Just checking in, seeing what you're up to. Listen, I'm on my way to my cross-country meet. Sort of hoping I could swing by later and hang out. Let me know.
Nicole: Hey, could you pay attention, please?
Mia: I was just checking to see who called me.
Nicole: That's not important. Mia, what matters right now is Sydney.
Mia: What about Sydney? Nicole, you're scaring me.
Nicole: All right, all right. Look, I know that... we want nothing more in this world but for Sydney to be happy, right?
Mia: Of course. Why wouldn't we want that?
Nicole: Oh, God.
Mia: Nicole...what? What is going on and what is this favor that you need from me? Nicole, if you don't tell me--
Nicole: It's out.
Nicole: The truth about Sydney.
Mia: No. Brady said the secret was safe.
Nicole: Well...he was wrong. EJ found out about the adoption... and that I lost my baby and that I tried to pass Sydney off as his own.
Mia: My god.
Nicole: Mia, he was... devastated and furious and... he said he wanted Sydney and me out of the house and that he never wanted to see us again.
Mia: Does that mean...
Nicole: No, it doesn't--it doesn't mean a thing, okay? Don't worry, all right? He's gonna be fine. He just needs to...get his bearings.
Nicole: Yes. I'm--I'm gonna make him see things differently.
Mia: How? I don't get it.
Nicole: I'm gonna convince him...I'm really gonna convince him... that even though Sydney is not his biological child, she is his daughter... the best thing that has ever happened to him. And when he realizes that I am right... he'll come around and he'll understand... why I did what I did. I did it for love. And then he will... he will take Sydney and me back into his home and his heart. Which is why, Mia... I just need you to stay quiet.
Mia: I'm sorry, Nicole... but I can't do that. [Sniffles]
[Papers slam on desk]
Brady: Oh, what the hell? It's out anyway. Nicole got pregnant with EJ's baby. Which was a miracle, because she was told that she could never conceive. So you can imagine how... thrilled and excited she was.
Melanie: Go on.
Brady: [Sniffs] It didn't last long, her excitement, because she had a miscarriage, Melanie.
Melanie: Oh, no.
Brady: And it was very far along as well, so it was--it was awful. And she was grief-stricken, you know, and she was terrified that EJ...would leave her if he found out about it.
Melanie: That she wasn't pregnant anymore.
Brady: Exactly. So what did she do? She decided to fake the rest of her pregnancy. And I knew all about it. I...helped her pass off another woman's baby as her own. I went along with the whole horrible lie, Melanie. So you can kind of understand how I'd feel a little responsible for a lot of people's misery right now, like Nicole's, even EJ's, even that little baby--the innocent baby who's not even their baby. I should never have agreed to any of it!
Melanie: Uh... w-- um, o-okay. Okay, uh... okay. No, I mean, Brady, first of all...[Laughs] You can't really think that this is your fault. I mean, even if Nicole hadn't gotten you to do it, she would have figured out a way to do what she did. Please, you can't blame yourself.
Roman: No, no, it's not that. Nothing on Rafe yet. No reports.
Sami: Okay, well, I guess that's...at least it's not bad news, right?
Arianna: So why are we here? Did you find anything on Meredith Hudson?
Roman: Yeah. From what we can tell, it's kinda like she disappeared. Now, I checked around. I made some contacts outside the jurisdiction, inside the jurisdiction. But like I said, it's... like she disappeared into thin air.
Sami: She's not even in Salem anymore?
Roman: Apparently not.
Arianna: Why would she leave? I mean, she just came back to fix up her parents' place and rent it out.
Roman: Yeah. And she had an appointment to show that property to some potential tenants, but she never showed up.
Sami: When was that?
Roman: The day after you got that email from Rafe.
Hope: Okey-dokey. There you go, my little beauty bug. Okay, go put your shoes on, okay, sweetheart?
Ciara: First I'm gonna go draw Daddy a picture.
Hope: Oh, I think that's a fabulous idea. Your daddy would love that.
[Cell phone rings]
Hope: Hey, Julie. Yeah, we're leaving the hotel in just a little while. I just wanted you to know. Yeah, I'm sure he'll be thrilled to see his little girl. Me? Not so much. [Laughs] Julie, thank you. Please tell Daddy how much I love him. I will--I'll call you as soon as I get home. You too.
Bo: What is this?
Justin: Go ahead, open it.
Bo: [Exhales] For a second there, I thought these might be divorce papers.
Justin: No. Nothing like that.
Bo: So she wants to transfer Ciara over to a private school.
Justin: Hope thinks that, uh, the trauma that Ciara experienced has made her very, very fragile. And apparently, she's done some research and found a school that has the resources to help.
Bo: Public schools don't have resources?
Justin: Well, I think it's more than that. I think she feels that Ciara will be safer at a private school, that the school that she's enrolled in now is... too accessible.
Bo: Okay. Yeah. That makes sense. Where do I sign?
Justin: You're okay with this?
Bo: Yeah, yeah. All I care about is...my wife and daughter. I want them home. And I sure as hell don't want anything else to come between us.
Carly: What was that? What happened?
Omar: Captain spotted a body in the water.
Carly: Oh, my god! Alive?
Omar: Not sure.
Carly: Well, bring him on board.
Omar: Carly, if we do that--
Carly: I can't be concerned about my security, okay? I took an oath. Please, if we can save this poor soul's life... please. [Sighs] Would it absolve me of taking another?
Bo: Hey...tell my wife I signed on the dotted line without reservation... and that I only care about Ciara and our family.
Justin: Well, Bo, it might be better if you, uh...told her that yourself.
Bo: Ha! I would... if she'd take my phone calls or my text messages or emails or carrier pigeon--anything.
Justin: I, uh...I heard about this news last night.
Bo: Yeah. It's pretty crazy, huh?
Justin: This guy had a... fairly deep reserve of enemies, didn't he? There's no mention of Carly, though.
Bo: No. Probably in seclusion.
Justin: You think?
Bo: Yeah. She lost the love of her life.
Justin: I thought, um... that, uh--
Bo: No! No, no, that, uh... any relationship I had after I thought Hope was... you know, after she was gone, I... well, it wasn't complete. Carly and I were...close. But my heart... only belonged to one woman. My fancy face.
Hope: Oh, Ciara, don't forget your toothbrush, honey, and hurry up. We're leaving pretty soon.
Arianna: She did something to him--I know she did. I mean, the way that she was talking about him--she blames him for Emily's death!
Sami: She's right, Dad. This woman was bitter and angry.
Arianna: And not to mention a little crazy, okay? I didn't really think much of it at the time, the way she was acting last time I saw her, but now that she has disappeared too?
Sami: The timing is really suspicious. You know, she just disappears the day after he sends us those emails?
Roman: No, you're both right. It all makes sense. But I'll tell you this. Wherever Rafe is, I'm sure he's okay. He's a tough guy, ex-FBI. He can take care of himself.
Arianna: I hope you're right. I gotta get to work.
Arianna: Um, can you let me know if you hear anything, please?
Sami: Yes, of course. And you call me too, okay?
Arianna: All right. Thanks.
Sami: Bye. Look, Dad, I thinks she's right. I am really starting to get concerned. I know he sent me an email explaining everything, but for Rafe not to call his sister, it's just--I just don't think it's like him.
Roman: I get that. You're right. Look, I am so sorry that this is such a tough time for you.
Sami: Dad, the more time that goes by, the more I think something has really happened to Rafe.
Carly: Hey, can you hear me?
Chad: Whoo! You were like Steve Prefontaine out there, Horton. Really kicked it in down the home stretch. Show a lot of guts.
Will: See you later, man.
Chad: Whoa. Well, you're gonna be voted MVP... ruin my season record.
Will: Who the hell cares? It's not like you're competition anyway.
Chad: Whoa. Sensing some hostility here, will.
Will: Dude, why do you keep trying to start something?
Chad: I'm not starting anything--I don't even know what you're talking about.
Will: Look, Mia and you are boyfriend and girlfriend now, okay? I get it, and you know what? I'm really happy for you two, okay? You really deserve each other.
Nicole: Uh...I'm sorry. Say that again?
Nicole: No, what? You can't keep your mouth shut?
Mia: That's right, and you can't bully me into it.
Nicole: I'm not trying to bully you, Mia. This is about Sydney. Do you want her life to be ruined?
Mia: Now that EJ knows the truth, my baby's life is going to be no better than the one I would have given her.
Nicole: R-really? How could you even say that? You're still in high school. You don't have a penny to your name.
Mia: The only reason I gave my baby to you in the first place is because I believed my little girl would be raised in a secure, loving home. And obviously, that's not the case anymore.
Nicole: Okay, yes, it is. Yes...it is. Wait, Mia, it-- it can be and it will be with your help. I-I have it all under control. All I need is for you...not to talk.
Mia: How can that be all you need?
Nicole: EJ loves Sydney... more than his own life. And I know... I know that he will not give up on her.
Mia: Maybe not her. But what about you? Is EJ gonna give up on you?
EJ: I can't stay here.
Sami: Sami, you have to stop obsessing. It's like Dad said--he's a grown man. He can...take care of himself. Right? Ex-FBI and all that. No. There's something wrong. I know it. [Whispers] I have to figure out a way to help.
Carly: That's it.
Carly: That's it, breathe. It's okay, it's okay. I'm a doctor. You're gonna be all right. All right? Listen to me. You know how this happened to you, huh? He's hypothermic, okay? We have to get him into dry clothes, cover his head, and we need warm compresses--not hot. Okay? And some blankets, quick.
Omar: Should we move him?
Carly: No, it might cause his heart to stop. We really need the blankets now!
[Rafe coughing, wheezing]
Carly: Come on, come on, that's it. Listen, you're not gonna die, okay, I'm not gonna let that happen. That's it. That's it.
Melanie: Come on, Brady. You're being way too hard on yourself. It's not like you pushed Nicole to lie! She would have found out a way to adopt Sydney with or without you.
Brady: You don't know that.
Melanie: Yeah, I do! People like Nicole, they don't give up on things. If it hadn't of been you, it would have been somebody else.
Brady: I knew from the beginning... I knew it, that it was not gonna end up well. I told her... I knew it was gonna blow up in her face. She didn't listen. She didn't want to listen. She came to me, she cried and she begged, and I c--I couldn't take it, Mel.
Melanie: You're a sensitive person.
Brady: I'm not s--I'm a coward! I enabled her... to do it! I saw that she was being self-destructive. I didn't do anything, 'cause I didn't want to break her heart! I saw how hurt she was by losing the baby, and I-I didn't-- I didn't want to force her to do anything--I couldn't.
Melanie: Because you knew if EJ found out...
Brady: He would leave her, Mel. And she'd have nothing. She'd have no husband, no baby. I didn't--I didn't want to see that happen to her, so I just let it go on and on. Ah...
Melanie: Look... look, you helped her because you're a good person, you're a kind friend. Your heart's in the right place. It always is. Trust me, I know! Say something, please.
Brady: I'm gonna go for a jog. I'm gonna go for a run, clear my head.
Melanie: Okay. Uh...yeah. That's a good idea. I don't think you should run alone, so I'm gonna run with ya.
Melanie: I'm gonna run home really fast and I'm gonna get my--
Brady: No! I don't want you to. I'm gonna go alone. I'll be fine. I'll be fine.
Melanie: You sure?
Brady: Yeah, don't worry. I'm just gonna go score a little coke--it'll be fine.
Melanie: Don't you joke around about something like that.
Brady: I'm kidding--I'm not gonna do anything like that. Nothing stupid.
Melanie: [Whispers] I believe you. You call me whenever--when you're done with your run, five minutes from now, I don't care. I-I'm on your side. We're gonna get through this.
Brady: All right, thanks.
Justin: So... you gonna call her?
Bo: Yeah. The reason Hope and I work is because we communicate. We're always... pretty open about our feelings.
Justin: Good. You'll do fine. You guys'll get through this. Listen, I gotta go.
Bo: All right. Later.
[Cell phone rings]
Hope: Hey. I was just about to call you.
Bo: Great minds, huh? [Inhales] So how you doing?
Hope: Fine. You?
Bo: I'm okay, um... just talked to Justin. He had the papers, you know, for Ciara to be transferred to that private school.
Bo: Well, I signed them. I mean, if you think that's what's best for her, then... it's a good thing. 'Cause I want what's best for, uh...for you and our baby. When are you coming home?
Carly: His pulse is thready. We're gonna have to take him to the hospital.
Omar: How do we do that?
Carly: I don't care what the risks are. He has to go to a hospital. Did he have id on him?
Carly: Okay. Well, call the hospital, the nearest hospital. Tell them we're coming. Tell them about his condition-- hypothermia and possible concussion. Thanks. Go. It's all right. It's gonna be okay. We're gonna get you some help, all right? You've hung in there this long. You just keep fighting. I want you to be strong. Whoever you are. Come on.
Man: Is it real good? Cleaner than the last batch you gave me?
Troy: I got a new source.
Man: Oh, yeah?
Troy: Yeah. Make sure nothing gets stepped on.
Man: Ah, we'll see.
Troy: Yeah. Yeah, well, it's for real this time. Threw in an extra grip.
Chad: Wow. Didn't realize you were so angry, Will.
Will: Oh, no, what's there to be angry about, you know? Mia broke up with me and within two minutes, she's back with you. What's the big deal?
Chad: You should have expected it.
Will: No. You know what I expected was for you to at least have the decency not to gloat.
Chad: Gloat? What, are we in the 17th century here, will? Look, I'd just rather have things out in the open, you know?
Will: Okay, sure. Mia broke up with me, and now she's back with you. It's her life, her decision. End of story.
Chad: All right, look. Will...I would like things to be cool between us, okay? And maybe, just maybe, if you can understand that, Mia and I...have this special connection.
Will: Give me a break.
Chad: Look, she and I, we've been through a lot. You know we have, all right? And it just feels, for lack of a better word, natural, you know? We're into each other. So... see you later, okay? Take it easy.
Will: Here's no way Mia's still into that guy. Something else is going on. I know it.
Arianna: Yep, that's right. 6 kilos. Yeah, the other stuff went really quick. Um, as soon as possible? Just let me know, okay? Thank you.
Melanie: What's your problem?
Arianna: 'Scuse me?
Melanie: Pretty sure you just heard me.
Arianna: Uh...I don't know what you're talking about.
Melanie: Well, I just ran into Brady, and he's a complete wreck.
Arianna: What happened?
Melanie: Apparently, you did.
Arianna: Okay, I-I-I'm sorry. I still don't know what you're--
Melanie: Here's what I'm talking about. When you opened up your big mouth, when you overheard Brady and Nicole talking about the baby and the miscarriage, and now all hell has broken loose?
Nicole: EJ and I will work things out, Mia, I promise. He's... he's really smart and savvy and...he will figure out a way to forgive me because I know he won't be able to live without his daughter.
Mia: That means I have to keep lying.
Nicole: You have up till now. Your role in this is still the same.
Mia: I just... cannot believe it turned out this way.
Nicole: Well...it did. Stuff like this happens, okay? But it's not the end of the world. If...if you just keep quiet, it will resolve itself.
Mia: No. I don't think so. None of this is going to resolve itself.
Nicole: What--why are you upset?
Mia: [Laughs] Why? Because I just gave up the sweetest guy in the world to be with Chad so he wouldn't go digging around trying to find out who adopted our baby.
Nicole: That's really noble of you, Mia.
Mia: But now the truth is gonna come out anyway, so I broke up with Will for nothing!
Nicole: No. No, no, no, no. That is--that's not true. That's what I'm trying to tell you. This will not fall apart, okay? I won't let it! I'm really sorry... that you had to make a huge sacrifice by giving up Will. But we all had to give up something for Sydney. That's what parents do. And that precious little girl is worth it. So please, Mia, please... I am begging you--don't screw this up.
Melanie: You don't feel bad?
Arianna: Yeah, I feel bad, okay? I feel terrible. I didn't mean to cause Brady any pain.
Melanie: Really? I'm starting to wonder about that.
Arianna: Well, you can stop wondering. And how is this any of your business?
Melanie: Brady's my friend, okay, and now you've completely screwed up his life.
Arianna: Well, that was not my intention.
Melanie: Doesn't matter if that was your intention. That's what happened. And guess what, it becomes my problem because Brady's the best guy I know aside from my brother.
Arianna: Well, you don't think I know that?
Melanie: You weren't thinking about it when you went around betraying his confidence, screwing up his life.
Brady: Come on, come on, Brady, get a hold of yourself. You're fine. You're fine. Call your sponsor. Get it off your chest, go to a meeting or something. Accept responsibility for your part in it. Be able to...
EJ: Good idea. Why don't you accept responsibility for some of the things you've done. Your timing really couldn't be better, because as it happens, I'm looking for somebody to blame. And I'm not just talking about Nicole, I'm talking about anybody who had a hand in destroying my life.
Mia: I don't wanna screw things up for you, Nicole. And I want what's best for Sydney too, but...
Nicole: But...no buts. If you want what's best for Sydney, then you need to keep quiet. [Sighs] Mia, listen to me. Nothing has changed. Nothing has or will change as long as you don't say anything.
Mia: Oh. So now you're threatening me.
Nicole: No, no, no, I'm not threatening you. I'm just trying to get you to consider that maybe--
Mia: You're telling me to not say anything like I'm just some pathetic little girl you can push around!
Nicole: Oh, my God, why am I not getting through to you? This is about Sydney, not you!
Mia: So you've said, about a million times, but I have to think about Chad too. How do you think he would feel if he found out my rehab counselor adopted a baby?
[Door thuds closed]
Hope: I, um... am coming home.
Bo: You have no idea how happy I am to hear that.
Hope: It's the right thing for your daughter. That's why I made the decision. It's for Ciara.
Sami: Hey, Grace. It's your mommy. I know you're up in heaven... watching out for us all the time. I feel you. Every day. Today I had to come... because I need to ask you for a favor. I'm hoping you can keep a special eye out for your daddy. See, I don't know where Rafe is right now... but I've been really worried about him. And I know... that you could take good care of him. Just make sure he's okay... that he's safe and happy.
Carly: Come on.
Omar: How is he?
Carly: He's not great. His pulse is irregular. No, come on, come on. Don't do that, don't do that! Come on...come on! Come on, you gotta fight, okay? I didn't fish you out of the water so you'd die! You gotta fight! Be strong, come on! I'm not gonna lose you! Come on...come on...
Nicole: Mia, Sydney is not your baby.
Sami: I just want him to be happy.
Carly: He needs all the help he can get...and if I don't think of something soon, it might be too late.
