Daniel: And you reran the tests? Okay. Thank you.

Will: [Sighs] Please don't do this to my mom. Don't do this to Grace.

[Door opens, closes]

Caroline: Will? Are you coming in?

Will: Uh...

Caroline: Sweetheart? What is it?

Will: It's -- it's Grace.

Philip: Hey, you're gonna have a long day at the police station tomorrow, okay? We need to get some sleep.

Stephanie: You're right. [Grunts]

Philip: I love you.

Stephanie: I love you, too.

Stefano: I know that he is in police custody, hmm? That's what makes it a challenge. Listen to me. If anything goes wrong and that gardener implicates my son in any way, I will personally make sure that you will regret it. Ah.

[Clears throat]

E.J.: Hey, look who's wide awake.

Stefano: [Sighs] There is our little angel. You know, it's amazing. She looks more and more like her mother every day.

E.J.: Yeah? She just looks awake to me.

Stefano: Well, grandpa is home. She wants to celebrate.

E.J.: You know what's funny? Usually, we pray that she's gonna sleep through the night. But this evening, I almost woke you up just so that I could hold you.

Stefano: I understand.

E.J.: Poor Samantha, right? I mean, just to contemplate the possibility of losing a child...

[Sydney fusses]

E.J.: What? Oh, I'm sorry, Father. I'm sorry.

Stefano: Oh, it's all right. You know, I don't need to be reminded of Tony. I think about him all the time.

E.J.: I guess that's what children do to us.

Sami: [Sniffles]

Rafe: You know what I was thinking? That even in her short life, Grace has already affected so many people. She brought us together, and... your whole family's fallen in love with her. And, heck, Salem has pretty much fallen in love with her, haven't they?

Sami: You're right. You're right. She has made so many miracles come true.

Rafe: Yeah.

Sami: And, uh, that's just it. We just need one more miracle.

Rafe: We don't need a miracle. We just need for the drugs to work.

Nicole: Please, hold her. Talk to her. It could make all the difference in the world.

Mia: But...

Nicole: It's okay. It's okay. Go ahead.

Nurse: I'll be right outside if you need me.

Nicole: Thank you.

Mia: Why? Why did you say I was Grace's mother?

Nicole: That baby needs someone to hold her. And you love her. We both know that. Go ahead. Comfort her.

Mia: I...

Nicole: It's okay. It's okay.

Mia: She looks so alone. Hey, baby. Hey. Hey. Hey.

Sami: You know what? I'm really glad we came here... because I have this feeling that Grace is getting better. I think she's gonna be okay.

Daniel: Oh, here you are. You need to come back upstairs. You need to be with Grace.

Sami: You know, I was just telling Rafe that I just had this feeling that the antibiotics -- they're working, aren't they? She's getting better.

Mia: Do you remember me? I sure hope so. [Sniffles] Yeah, I have a little girl just like you. Maybe one day, when you guys are older, you can play together. You are such a sweet little girl. [Cries] Thank you so much for letting me hold you. So many people love you, okay? You hear me, honey? So many people are praying for you.

Chloe: Okay, I don't know who's having more fun up there -- Max or Allie. Oh, my God. You look awful. Is the baby all right?

Lucas: I don't know. I don't know. When I left the hospital, Sami was still waiting for a diagnosis. I guess the baby was in treatment.

Chloe: Well, that's good, isn't it?

Lucas: I don't think there's anything good about this. Chloe, you should have seen her. I mean, you know that saying, "she'd do anything for her baby"? It's not just cliché with Sami.

Chloe: Poor woman. First she loses her own baby and now this baby that she adopts... isn't there anything they can do?

Lucas: [Sighs] God help her, there is.

Stefano: You have a very, very beautiful daughter, Elvis, but there's something I think you should know about her.

E.J.: Okay, what's that?

Stefano: You see [Sighs] that child out there in the hospital, the beautiful, innocent child fighting for her life, is not Sami's baby at all. And you of all people should know that since you are the one who has Sami's real baby.

E.J.: Father? What is it?

Nicole: Mia, honey. It's time to put the baby down. We have to go.

Mia: I can't. I can't just leave her.

Sami: So, I was praying, and this feeling -- this feeling of relief, it just came over me, you know? I just -- I just knew it, that Grace was gonna be okay.

Rafe: Sami, maybe we should let the doctor talk.

Sami: But he just said.

Rafe: No, he hasn't said anything, okay? Just listen.

Daniel: I do need to tell you that we haven't had the reaction to the antibiotics that we were looking for.

Sami: Okay, well, then give her more antibiotics. Do something else.

Daniel: Sami, I can't do that right now. Her system wouldn't be able to take it. I'm sorry. I wish I had better news.

Rafe: But she's still hanging in there, and we're gonna hang in there with her, okay? Thank you, Dr. Jonas.

Sami: No.

Rafe: Come on, Grace is waiting.

Sami: She's fine. She's fine. She's gonna be okay.

Daniel: What are you doing? Give them a break.

Nicole: Honey, we really have to go.

Mia: She needs her mother. Where is she?

Nicole: I don't know.

Mia: This isn't like her. I can't believe she just left.

Nicole: Okay, look. Mia, we really do have to go, okay? So if you'd just put the baby down, and we'll go find Sami.

Mia: I can't do it, Nicole. [Crying] I just can't do it.

Will: So, Dr. Jonas told me that I should get everyone down to the hospital.

Caroline: Oh. I see.

Will: Grandma Caroline?

Caroline: What?

Will: I didn't want her. I didn't want my mom to adopt her.

Caroline: Grace and Allie and Johnny have the best big brother in the world. Will, it's all over you -- how much you love them. Okay? You ready?

Will: Yeah.

Caroline: Okay. Let's go see your little sister.

Stefano: Ah. Oh, boy. You know [Clears throat] Elvis, perhaps [Chuckles] you're already a better father than I ever was.

E.J.: Father, if, uh, you're not gonna go to bed, could you please not get reflective? It's a little unnerving. So, what was it you wanted to tell me? You said there was something I should know about Sydney. Like there's something I don't know about you.

Stefano: I was going to presume to tell you what no one needs to tell you. My son, treasure every moment that you have with your little girl. And don't ever, ever take it for granted.

E.J.: Damn. Damn.

Stefano: What?

E.J.: I am so sorry. I wasn't thinking. Of course you had to get out of that hospital. Tony.

Stefano: Listen. It doesn't make any difference where I am, all right, because Tony is always on my mind. I think about him all the time. But, you know, tonight, I was -- I was thinking about Samantha. Because no one should have to face what she is facing tonight.

E.J.: I know. I keep thinking to myself... what would I do if that were my baby?

Nurse: I'm very sorry. Only the baby's mother's allowed in here.

Sami: I am her mother.

Nurse: No. Her mother just was here.

Rafe: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Someone said that they were Grace's mother? Who the hell was that?

Mia: Um, I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me.

Nicole: It's okay, Mia.

Mia: It was like I literally could not let go of her. Oh, my God. I think I know why.

Chloe: I remember this time that I told Nicole that it bothered me how close you and Sami were. I didn't get it. But I get it now, what it means to share a child.

Lucas: Yeah.

Chloe: Sami and I haven't always seen eye to eye, but seeing her with that baby and seeing how much love she has for someone else's child, it's pretty amazing.

Lucas: I don't know what she'll do if anything happens to Grace. I don't think she'll be able to get through it.

Nicole: Does there have to be a why? You just feel connected to Sami's baby.

Mia: It's more than that. And I think you know it.

Nicole: Me?

Mia: You were there when I had my baby. [Voice breaking] And like I told you, giving her up without even holding her was so awful. So when I had Grace in my arms, I just never wanted to let her go. [Crying]

Nicole: Okay. Okay. That makes sense.

Mia: It was so weird, though. She was sleepy. And you could tell that she was so sick, but [Sniffles] when I talked to her, she looked at me. It's like she knew my voice.

Nicole: Oh, Mia, Mia. Easy, please.

Mia: [Crying] There's a girl out there just like me, who had a beautiful baby and gave her up, and now she doesn't even know that that baby could be dying!

Nicole: Oh, God. Okay.

Mia: [Sobbing]

Nicole: Okay. Shh.

Mia: [Sobbing]

Nicole: It's okay. It's okay.

Stefano: I do not like delays. Not only does it give the police an opportunity to wear him down more, but Kiriakis can get to him. Oh. [Clears throat] Yes. And, um, the doctor says that my diet is coming along fine. But he did propose I should have some kind of moderate exercise program. Ah. Yeah. Okay, good. Good. I look very much forward to meeting him. Yes. Ciao. [Sighs]

E.J.: [Sniffing] Mmm. This is for you.

[Tray thuds]

Stefano: You know, perhaps I should be punished for my sins, but cottage cheese and 11-year-old toast? Really?

E.J.: This trainer of yours, he must be a pretty versatile chap, I mean, if he gets your heart pumping and he takes out Owen.

Stefano: What?

E.J.: Father... you don't call exercise gurus at this time of night. You're calling one of your operatives to get an update on your target.

Stefano: Look, I told you. I'll take care of business. You take care of your family.

E.J.: Okay, you take care of Owen. How?

Nurse: I'm sorry, but I'm going to need some kind of verification.

Sami: I don't care what you need.

Rafe: Look, I swear to you she is Grace's mother, okay?

Nurse: But the other girl said that she was --

Daniel: Hey, hey. What is going on?

Nurse: That's Grace's mother?

Daniel: Yes, it is. Why?

Rafe: Some woman showed up, claiming to be Grace's mother.

Daniel: That's great.

Rafe: Look, can we just forget about this right now, okay? There's a lot more going on to worry about.

Nurse: I'm sorry.

Daniel: No, it's okay. Just let security know. Is she okay?

Nurse: I checked her reflexes.

Sami: Hey, sweetie pie. Hey. You know, Mommy and Daddy, we, um -- we went down to say a little prayer for you. But now we're back. We're back. And Daddy's back. And we're never gonna leave you again, sweetheart.

Nicole: Here, let's sit down.

Mia: I'm sorry.

Nicole: It's okay. I feel like crying, too.

Mia: I meant... I said some really, really terrible things about you. But you really are a good person. And you love my baby, and you love Grace, too.

Nicole: I do.

Mia: And even Mrs. Brady -- you feel really bad for her, don't you?

Nicole: Mia. I, uh -- oh, God. I have to go. [Crying]

Daniel: It doesn't seem whoever was in here did her any harm.

Sami: She -- she seems so alert, like she's doing better. Don't you think you could give her more antibiotics now?

Daniel: Sami... look, you don't know how much I hate to say this, but we have done everything -- everything we can. Now you need to prepare yourself.

Sami: Okay. Okay, well, you've done what you can. And now it's Grace's turn. You said yourself she's -- she's a fighter. She's just like me. And I'm not giving up. And neither is my little girl. And -- and...if you've done everything you can, then I think you can just leave us alone now. [Sniffling]

Daniel: I'll be outside.

Rafe: I'll be right back, okay?

Sami: Rockaby Grace sent from above God's little angel mom's little love now that you're with me the skies will be blue 'cause God's little angel [Singing indistinctly]

Rafe: Hey. Um, just now, were you saying that you didn't think that Grace was gonna make it?

Daniel: Oh, no.

Rafe: Hey. It's okay.

Daniel: Look, I am so sorry. She has a particularly virulent form of meningitis. And it seems that the -- well, it seems resistant to the antibiotics. The prognosis is not good.

Rafe: But I don't understand. This just all happened so fast.

Daniel: That's meningitis.

Rafe: I was gonna adopt her.

Daniel: I saw you with her. You're her dad. I'm pretty sure she knows it.

Rafe: [Cries] I... [Sobs] Kids... [Sniffles] I never... I didn't even think that I liked them. Yeah.

Daniel: Look, Rafe, it's my, uh -- it's my experience that it can help to say goodbye. I think Sami needs to know that's a possibility.

Rafe: Yeah.

Daniel: I just backed out of there, but I think she needs to know.

Rafe: Right. And I should be the one to tell her, right? We're Grace's parents.

Daniel: Yeah.

Rafe: Yeah.

Will: Hey. I'm sorry I took off. Dr. Jonas told me that I should go get my family.

Mia: To say goodbye?

Will: Maybe. You know what? I don't think I can do it.

Nicole: So was that fun for you... hearing Mia say how nice I was and that I cared about Sami? [Sighs] Look, I never, ever thought that anything like this would ever happen to her. I just wanted E.J. to have his daughter. And I know -- I know I didn't give a damn about Sami. [Voice breaking] Oh, but she loves that baby so much. And it doesn't make a difference who the mother is or who the father is. She's just a little baby. Please. Please don't do this to her. She hasn't done anything to anyone except fill people up with love. [Crying] Oh, I'm sorry. I'm sorry! I'm sorry! Punish me, please. Don't punish her! Please, let Gracie live. Please. [Sobbing]

Chloe: Allie was all right?

Lucas: Yeah. Yeah. She's doing great. She and Max are having ice cream.

Chloe: Mmm. Uh, you know, I think that Nicole's still at the hospital, so maybe I should call her and see if she's heard anything.

Lucas: Nicole's there? What the hell is she doing there? That's the last person Sami needs to see right now.

Chloe: She's there visiting Stefano, okay? Come on, she's not gonna bother Sami. She has a child the same age as Grace, okay? I think she understands what Sami's going through.

Lucas: Yeah, I guess you're right. Sorry. It has been a while. Maybe there is good news now.

Sami: She's sitting up now. Look at her.

Rafe: Yeah.

Sami: I think she's doing better. She's -- she's doing better. I really can tell.

Rafe: Sami, I just talked to Dr. Jonas.

Sami: No.

Rafe: What?

Sami: He doesn't know what he's talking about. Look at her. He's wrong.

Rafe: [Sniffles] Listen, Sami. Dr. Jonas thinks that we just need to --

Sami: Prepare?

Rafe: Yeah.

Sami: That is like code for giving up. [Crying] I am not giving up on my little girl. I can't. And she's not giving up. Okay? She's not giving up. And if you don't have any faith in this, then just get out. Just get out. [Sobbing] It's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay. It's gonna be okay. Mama's gonna be here with you. You're gonna be okay. [Sobbing] You're gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay.

[Cellphone ringing]

Nicole: Hello.

Chloe: Hey, it's me. I'm here with Lucas.

Nicole: Hey.

Chloe: Uh, we were just wondering if you'd heard anything about how Grace is doing.

Nicole: Uh, it's meningitis.

Chloe: No.

Lucas: What?

Nicole: Chloe, I'm sorry. I have to go. It's so sad. It's way too sad.

Chloe: She said it was meningitis. Lucas, she sounded really horrible.

Lucas: All right, we got to get down there. Come on.

Rafe: Hey. Hey.

Roman: Grace?

Rafe: It's not good.

Caroline: Oh. I see.

Lexie: Daniel.

Daniel: Hey.

Lexie: Hi, um, my shift is over, but I can stay, if you'd like.

Daniel: No, I'm okay.

Lexie: A baby with meningitis -- no one's ever okay.

Daniel: I just keep going over and over these charts. I can't do anything. Nothing. Her system can't take it. I just...

Lexie: You're like the rest of us now. All you can do is pray.

[Door opens]

Sami: [Sobbing] Daddy. Daddy.

Roman: Baby.

Sami: [Sobbing]

Roman: It's okay. It's okay.

Stefano: Good night, sweetheart. A Domani. [Sighs]

E.J.: I see. So, now that you don't want to answer my question, you're just going to go to bed, are you?

Stefano: Elvis, be with your daughter, huh? Enjoy the peace and quiet. Stop worrying. Eh? [Chuckles] I'm back!

E.J.: That's what I'm worried about. Let's see where your mother is, shall we?

[Cellphone ringing]

Chloe: Hey. Hi. Oh, you don't look so good.

Nicole: I'm -- I'm sorry.

Chloe: Why? Of course this is getting to you. I mean, Sydney's the same age as Grace.

Nicole: She's so helpless. And no one's talking to me, but...

Chloe: Yeah?

Nicole: I think they're out of options.

Daniel: Anything, doctor. Something experimental. I am running out of time here. No, no. I know. I know. I ju-- right. I know.

Sami: Dad, listen. I'm so sorry I didn't tell you that Rafe was gonna adopt Grace.

Roman: Hey, I think it's a great idea. I mean, all you have to do is look at him, and you know how much he loves that baby. And I seem to remember that he was pretty good at keeping people safe.

Sami: [Laughs]

Roman: So, uh... do you want me to call your mom for you?

Sami: Actually, I already talked to her. And I told her to stay with John because she doesn't have to come back 'cause Grace is getting better. You can see her. She's sitting up, and she's moving around. She's gonna be okay, Dad. You know how babies are. [Crying] They... they... Daddy, I'm so scared. I'm so scared, Daddy.

Roman: I know it, sweetheart. I know. Is there anything I can do?

Sami: You -- you have to talk to Rafe for me 'cause I need him.

Rafe: I'm right here.

Roman: Uh... I think I'm gonna go out and, uh, be with your grandma, okay? And that little baby is very lucky to have both of you. Okay, I love you so much. Okay.

Sami: Hey.

[Door closes]

Sami: I'm so sorry for what I said.

Rafe: No, it's okay. It's okay.

Sami: You were just trying to tell me the truth, weren't you? You were just... you were just trying to help me see that... that she's not gonna... she's...

Rafe: Shh.

Sami: She's not gonna make it, is she? [Sobbing]

Mia: I hate people who give advice, you know, tell you what to do.

Will: Okay, but you're not people, okay? You're my friend.

Mia: All right. You asked for it. Look, I know how scary it is to go in there, but... [Sighs] My new philosophy -- if you get the chance to hold a baby, take it. Trust me. I know what I'm talking about.

Chloe: Maybe you should go home.

Nicole: I can't.

Chloe: Nicole, there's nothing you can do.

Nicole: Yeah, you're right. I've done so much already, haven't I?

Chloe: What?

Nicole: Everyone's in so much pain, and I have everything I want -- everything.

Will: Sorry, I should have --

Sami: No. Will, it's okay.

Rafe: Hey.

Will: Hey. Hey.

Rafe: Do you want to hold her?

Sami: Here you go. Here she is. There... yeah.

Will: Hey, Grace. It's me. It's your big brother. [Chuckles]

Sami: She needs you, will. She needs to know people love her. [Sobbing]

Nicole: Stefano, you scared me.

Stefano: I think we should finish our little conversation.

Victor: I was hoping you could just forgive me.

Brady: Hell no.

On the next "Days of Our Lives..."

Chloe: Daniel.

Daniel: Go be with your husband.

Fr. Matt: May the Lord Jesus bless you and lead you to eternal life.
